I stopped caring about this even as it was playing. I just cannot bring myself to respect lowest common denominator pop rock that also has literally nothing of interest to say. I don't like Alice Cooper either, but at least the writers could write a hook.

Utter pish

Such an influential band 👨🏼‍🎤

They are some funny little clowns

456/1089 listening to Detroit Rock City thinking “this was in a great movie scene” and googling it to discover that the movie in question was Paul Blart: Mall Cop lmao this was a fun glam rock project, pretty exemplary of its genre which i enjoyed. faves: detroit rock city, beth, do you love me 61/100

While I enjoy KISS and there are some classics on this album, overall its just ok for me.

Flashbacks to junior high. I remember the TV show with them awkwardly singing “Beth.”

Ehhh too glammy, lyrics are not relatable, would not choose to listen to again

ew. just no

KISS are such a funny concept. An album called Destroyer, guys dressed up with full devil face paint and live shows with flames and fireworks, but their music is just about as pop as you can get to still be considered rock. I actually thought this was batter then I expected it to be. I wouldn't say it was particularly good but it was at least listenable in a lighthearted fun sort of way.

I’ve been kind of dreading this one as I’ve always seen Kiss as the ultimate gimmick band and thus have always avoided them. Why sell your soul to the devil when you can sell your soul to capitalism instead? In the end, this album wasn't terrible. The lyrics are almost entirely corny classic rock cliches and their musicianship is generic at best, but they’re competent musicians and the album is fun in a stupid kind of way. Honestly, it really felt like a satire of hard rock and metal, which has really made me want to watch This is Spinal Tap.

I would have been completely fine not hearing this album. Very forgettable

Another one that feels like classic 80s rock. I think the guys in the 80s did it better, but this was likely inspiration for them. But this isn't 1001 albums to make me inspired to write the next music! So the album is just fine to listen to.

The Kardasian's of rock and roll.

One time I ate a deep fried Twinkie. I sort of feel like my ears just did that.

Definitely more flash than substance/talent/etc here. That should come as no surprise to anyone. For best results, turn up the volume.

Never listened to KISS before. Quite liked the first track and thought maybe this could be a 4. After 3-4 tracks, it actually became a bit cringe (lyrics) and the arrangements sounded very formulaic and predictable. 2 is a fair rating for this. This album was totally phoned in but not completely trash. Thankfully a short album.

We got off to an alright start, but oh boy did we find the proper gear to make terrible fucking music. Dreadful.

Kiss is a miss, & will always be one for one simple reason: they don't rock, no matter how much they tell us they do. '12 o'clock, I gotta rock.' They create a rank atmosphere of nostalgia for something they ne'er possessed to begin w/, i.e., rock 'n' roll, which in their grasp is in its most abstract & fleeting form. 'God of thunder / & rock 'n' roll / The spell you're under / Will slowly rob you of your virgin soul.' It's a general rule of thumb that rockers shouldn't sing 'bout rock music: The VU & Oasis are notable exceptions. I can appreciate the production on Destroyer, & a lesser-known track like the Brit-inspired 'Great Expectations' is interesting, but as a record it fails b/c Kiss fails at what they're supposed to be good at: making poppy hard rock.

These dudes live the rock & roll lifestyle, and it comes out in their music. And while they have bona fide musicianship chops, it's the spectacle that gets people into them. This album has a bunch of fun songs even if admittedly they're not terribly deep. This is an album to rock out to; it's not trying to make a grander statement. Sometimes that's all you're in the mood for.

Not really my kind of rock. Quite twee.

2.3/5 unpleasant

campy goofballs (complimentary)

Probably the best front to back effort from KISS I’d have to imagine. Cool to hear the transition from Detroit Rock Cott into King of the Night Time World. It certainly has its moments of self-indulgence and no one would claim that any member of the band was a revolutionary of their instrument of choice, but hey it’s fun.

Kiss are pretty bad, the songs are bad, the playing lame, the act is cringe. They’re counting on you having low standards. At this point you’re all adults, your parents don’t care, drop it. A lot of the dumb hard rock you defend as ‘OK to be dumb’ is just dumb. E.g. I also heard that crap Bad Company record this week. Very different from Kiss! Comparably dumb.

Listened previously. Expectations: Mid - Verdict: Dislike - Detroit Rock City is just a good, fun rock song. The radio intro is cool and then it's an over the top, silly hard rock tune that sums up exactly what KISS are about. King Of The Night Time World is pretty weak and God Of Thunder is also not great. I think they just push too hard into the silliness while sounding like they are sincere which then comes across as juvenile. I think Great Expectations could be better but the vocals are really weak and the refrain just goes on for far too long. Flaming Youth is the best track since the opener. Sweet Pain and Shout It Out Loud are boring and Beth is also uninspired and dull.

Boring mid hard rock from Gene Simmons and Co. 2 stars

Loved it

I can't really explain why I like this so much

I preferred the movie Detroit Rock City. But it was worse than I remembered.

Meh. If I was a teenager in the ‘70s I would probably rock out to this. Some songs are catchy I guess. But I’m not. I’m a middle-aged man that remembers Gene Simmons was pretty obnoxious to Terry Gross (in addition to a whole bunch of other dumb stuff he’s done over the years). If any Kiss songs pop up on my music app’s random-shuffle-whatnot then I will be skipping them.

The members of KISS are not good people, and many times the lyrics of their songs reflect this. But I’d be lying if I said the songs weren’t catchy as hell. Probably more 3 1/2 than 3, but since I can’t do that I’ll go 3.

Nah. This band suck.

Detroit Rock City bopped and then it was downhill from there.

I'm really not a fan of KISS; even for my relatively straightforward musical palate, I find them generic and dull, with horribly on-the-nose lyrics and zero subtlety. I get that some people love it, and it's not the worst noise I've ever heard, but I'm really pleased I finished this record and won't have to go back to it.

Meh. It wasn't great, it wasn't terrible. Some songs that became classics here. I just want to take a moment though to call Gene a piece of shit.

I always thought KISS was a “terrible on record but great live performance” type of band. At least that’s what I was told when I was younger. I can see that but there’s some decent songs on here. Detroit Rock City, Shout it out Loud are pretty iconic songs. The rest of the album was just okay. But, better that I thought it would be. P.s. Beth sucks. This is probably what people referred to as KISS being terrible on record.

I have never understood why Kiss were a big thing. I have t heard many of their songs, but the ones I have heard have been fairly mediocre. Like this album.

On the surface, these guys suck. No special talent, representing damn near everything wrong with 70’s glam. Only good thing these fuckers did was encourage the punk and grunge movement. Oddly enough, I was a stagehand for their arena show in Denver back in the early 80’s. Pretty cool stage props, with a catwalk and giant moving tank turrets. Little did I know Chaim was such a creepy prick, but it makes sense now. 2 stars, because… you know… Shannon.

I know people like Kiss, but I can't stand them. Personally or musically.

The singles from this album are okay, but the rest is really weak in my opinion. 3 stars or C-.

Better than I was expecting, but the bar was pretty low to begin with. Merit for being short and to the point. Kiss was always one of those bands I never really understood how they blew up as big as they did. Is it the spectacle? Is it the generic rock made for the lowest common denominator of a music fan? Or was it just something you had to be there for in the moment? I'm not concerned enough to find out...

I never knew much about or felt too much for KISS. They have some fun rock songs, and that's about it. One of them kicks off the album, Detroit Rock City, and yeah it's a hell of an opener. Honestly, most of the songs here, even if they weren't as good as Detroit, were fun to listen to. I kinda respect that KISS doesn't sound like they half-ass anything, at least on this album. That's something I like about Meat Loaf, and I enjoy it about this too. Every song, even if I don't love them, sounds like the band put their all into it. Pretty cool

I’m not sure I’ve ever actually listened to a KISS album straight through. Dumb, but a fun enough listen.

Few hits, but mostly this is middle of the road 70s glam rock style Kiss.

Pretty solid for guys trying to make Rock Pop.

Boring. Not good, kiss annoys me

It’s fine, generic rock. Honestly, it sounds really tame compared to what I expected them to sound like. Probably wouldn’t revisit.

I think KISS's greatest contribution to society is probably the T-shirt I own with cats wearing their makeup under the word "HISS" stylized to look like their logo, its really charming and I'm sad that its starting to fade after owning it for many years. Anyway, this largely sucked 1.5/5

I liked this a lot better than I thought I would. I didn’t expect any slowed down melodic tunes, or really any variation at all. Not too bad.

Did the boys dress up to record this in the studio? There’s a lot to be said about KISS but 99% of the allure is the pageantry and groupthink—the music always took a backseat unless we’re talking about “Deuce” but that’s not on this album. 3 keepers in 10 (30%). 1 klunker (10%). 2 stars.

Some really truly awful stuff here. Like they are trying to be Alice Cooper but they’re bad at it. Starts off alright with Detroit Rock City which has a solid riff and is fun enough and just goes off the rails from there. Great Expectations is the biggest stinker here. So many other bands doing what is done here so much better.

i don't know what i expected with this band but this wasn't what i expected. it's okay, or whatever. Would I listen again: No Deserves to be on this list: they have to be there somewhere right? 2.5

KISS is just Lynyrd Skynyrd for people in the rust belt. Overall the album was fun, basically a party. But the music lacked the depth that would make it truly one of the greats

Its cheesy, it's metal, it's glam, and it's kinda fun. It's never gonna be on rotation in my personal collection, but when it comes on, Ill rock

I do not agree with their politics(or at least some) by by goodness did they write a good rock/pop song. I think as they progressed they became more reliant on the image but early on the music was fun and enjoyable.

HEY! HEY! KIDS it's the rock equivalent of Krusty the Klown! Gene Simmons even looks like him, complete with all the clown make-up. They all do! Merchandising is the key, here. Entertaining you is their goal, also. The music seems secondary. All your favorite rock bands LOVE Kiss. Do you know why that is? Reputation. Parents HATED them! All because of stupid ass rumors that made them seem more Dangerous than they actually were. Rumors, facts & opinions such as: -KISS stands for Knights In Satan's Service. - Satanic messages in their music. -The car accident story in Detroit Rock City. -The double S in KISS looks strikingly similar to the SS symbol. (I believe some of members are Jewish) -Gene's tongue is actually a cow's tongue sewn to his tongue to make it bigger. -Had a Marvel comic printed in their own blood. -One of them looks like a Kitty! -Another called Starchild. -Gene is The Demon, because, of course, he is. -The make-up is there for a reason. Yikes -You, too, can be buried in a KISS coffin! It's ok. All favorite sports teams do it, too! All these parents had to do was listen to the music & realize the ridiculousness of the music. Which is all style and little to no substance. Just songs about getting girls & being or seeming cool. Are the songs catchy? They can be. There's no denying it It's just so schlocky! (Like Do You Love Me) And only after getting a buck & a fuck. AC/DC Lite. I hate Beth. I look forward to meeting hologram Gene Simmons in the future. At least he won't grab my wife's ass. If you take away all their bells & whistles, you get their Unplugged album, which sucks more than a Kiss groupie.

No band measures the evolution of perspective from childhood to adulthood for me like KISS. As a kid in the 70s, I was raised on my parents’music. 50s, 60s and the contemporary rock music of the time. When I started looking outside of my parents’ influence and one of those bands was KISS. They were never my favorite band, but I was young enough to think their shtick and iconography was cool, but always a little disappointed that the music didn’t really correlate. I liked Ace though. I still think he was an underrated guitar player. Destroyer (although not my personal favorite) seems to be the consensus pick for their best album. Detroit Rock City is a banger, but listening to this album as an adult whose scope of music has evolved and expanded to incorporate a wide variety of music genres and styles, most of this album leaves me flat. KISS was a fun band for my youth and even my inner child gets a little pumped if I hear Strutter or Love Gun out in the wild, but my fascination with KISS waned pretty quickly as a kid (I always liked Cheap Trick better anyway) and by the time they took the makeup off (Yikes!), I had moved on to punk, new wave and slightly less silly bands. 3.4

is this...camp?

I wasn't a big KISS fan, but hey, it's rock and roll, baby!

Apart from jamming on rock band with my Uni housemates - I am only tangentially aware of Kiss. Although I understand they were massive at the time. _______________ A lot of the tracks have a cinematic and dramatic quality emphasized by the colourful production. Obviously this shock rock has lost it's lustre many years later. The instrumentation is basic, particularly the drums and the vocals are inconsistent as hell. Several tracks wear their influence openly to the point it feels like parody. Still it has a few stomping tracks that drag it out of 1*. First impressions 1) Stomping glam rock 4* 2) Forgettable 1* 3) Black Sabbath tribute, kinda rocks 4* 4) Queen? Terrible. 0* (Good choir though) 5) Country Rock pretending to be punk. 1* 6) Rolling stones? Ok solo. 2* 7) Jangly rock - Elton is that you? 3* 8) Piano driven soppy song with horns and flute/strings. Session musicians outshine the band, let's go. 3* 9) Back to stompy glam bragging. Terrible chorus. 1* 10) Spacey outro N/A

I don’t think I have ever really listened to KISS in any focused way. I’m familiar with the opening bars of Detroit Rock City from listening to Tigers radio over the years, but other than that, nothing. This wasn’t terrible by any means, but there’s little calling me back to want to listen again to. I imagine it was quite I influential back in the day- maybe I can hear some influence on bands like Saxon. Maybe.

sie sind so goofy omg. ich bin hüt morge nume bitz zum lose cho und jo i guess es tönt afoch wie kiss. also kitschige rock. aber scho au no guet gspielt de bass isch emal no geil. aber bin etz bis do ane nöd esoooo fan. aber ich check jetz glaub wiso die so gross sind. shout it out loud isch huere gross und en brüller irgendwie. ah fuck beth isch kinda e gueti ballade. ich will die dudes irgendwie nöd würklich möge de gene simmons isch glaub en uuuuuhuere wichser. aber fuck ok guete track. mann ich finds kinda guet. mues fast es vieri sii. gopf.

Well, this will polarize the council. I love it. It's loud, dumb, and derivative. But it also was the coolest damn thing I had ever heard as an 8 year old. Shout It is the best KISS song overall (kinda of like the best burger McDonald's makes...?), Detroit and King are great, Thunder, Flaming, and Love Me are fun, too. Beth is, well, Beth. And the rest can be skipped. This deserves to be on the list because Destroyer was such a game changer for hard rock in the mid-70s and sparked the weird rise of KISS as a cultural marker of the 70s. And the album cover! Finally, it's the only KISS album on this list, so we don't have to return to them, so haters just move on, okay?

I don’t consider KISS as a true rock band. They exude the vibe of theater kids, hence the make up. It just felt like I was looking at and listening to characters more than traditional musicians. That being said, I’m not a fan of anything except the song “Rock n’ Roll All Nite.” So this gets a 2 for me

I like KISS alright, but they’re a band where I feel like all one really needs from them is a greatest hits compilation. I appreciate that they’ve always just embraced the ridiculous. And they’ve written some fun songs spread out over about 5 records (I’m aware there are more). But there’s really only like two or three songs on this record that are really worth my time. 6.5/10

++: Sweet Pain, Shout It Out Loud +: King of the Night Time World, Great Expectations, Flaming Youth, Do You Love Me +-: Detroit Rock City, God of Thunder, Beth -: Rock and Roll Party 4,9/10

I loved this album as a kid. Some bands you grow into. This one I grew out of.

At least it was a short album. Unbelievably corny.

KISS is one of those bands that write killer singles and fill the rest of the album with middling to good tracks. In context this was fairly standard practice for many bands of the era, especially due to the speed at which they were producing new records. I'm not very forgiving of it, regardless of era, because I am of.the opinion that every song should reflect the quality of the band and I score accordingly. All that said, KISS is an iconic glam metal band that certainly made their mark on rock history, and Destroyer was a multi-platinum success. They got by on their look and some of the best singles to come out of the genre and this record has some of their more iconic hits. It's certainly worth your time, but they have better records. Source: Tidal Format: Dolby Atmos (2021 Remaster)

KISS isn’t exactly the a great band, but they’re of their time and they deserve their spot in the list because they made the sales. You don’t have to like them, but you can’t ignore their success. People who bad mouth bands like KISS probably wax poetic about the mumblers from the Grunge Rock era. Plus 1 to offset the navel gazing whiners. Rock on.🤘🏻

Rock bunda. Porcaria total. 1/5

A band with this image should not sound like this. It’s bad. Bad production, some truly awful vocals on some songs. No consistency.

One of the greatest album covers of all time. The songs, the legacy, the longevity, the bravado and the hits are all woven into this one. You still hear "Detroit Rock City", "God Of Thunder", "Shout It Out Loud", "Do You Love Me" & "Beth" on the radio today. I loved them as a kid and never really gave up on them, so good live, you got what you paid for. Other than "Flaming Youth" & "Sweet Pain" there are no skippable tracks if you like a good rock album. Production, energy, hit songs, cover art, longevity, etc, this one deserves a spot on the Top 1001. 4 stars PS - Listen to the 45th Anniversary Edition, there's some great B-Sides that are better than 3 of the core tracks. Try "Mad Dog", "Burnin' Up With Fever" and Rock N' Rolls Royce" which are all a bitter darker and funkier.

культовые образы, всякие хитяры по типу i was made for lovin' you и прочее.

As much as this album is full of Cooper isms stylistically. I just don't think they write good song, and quite frankly for the most part their vocal style is just trash. I can say between Ace's guitar and Gene's tumping bass, if they had good songs to begin with. Only one I liked across the whole album, "Shout It Out Loud", which almost had a less polished 80s glam sound to it. The rest is just lackluster at best, which for KISS, that's pretty good (5.5) ★★½

Okay for a Kiss album. Too many hard, rock tropes. 3 stars

"Detroit Rock City" and "Beth" are good tunes, but the rest kinda stinks. Some of the lyrics are so laughably cartoonish they make Spinal Tap seem Dylanesque. Light 3 stars on the strength of the singles.

A few half-decent dumb sing-along rock tunes but overall nothing too special even for Kiss plus some pointless album-scarring musique concrete filler at the very end. Main only cool thing is the cover art. Could have had an oodle bunch more of Thin Lizzy on here or even Kiss Alive which has actual cool GH3-approved bangers like Rock And Roll All Nite.

The first commercialy succesful studio album. OK.

Extra point because of Role Models.

I'm flabbergasted by just how had this is. This is the most despicable album I've ever heard, without a shadow of a doubt. This can't be real.

Lite spretigt men bra refränger. Albumet peakar när Paul Stanley sjunger ”First I drink, then I smoke” i Detroit Rock City, det är så jävla fett.

Tamt, fruktansvärt svaga texter, förvånande dåligt imo

really cheesy, how is this a classic?

Classic!
