Reviews (page 3 of 8)

These four demons of the day probably felt like Satan reborn to the general pearl clutching public but their music is relatively tame not just compared to today, but to some of their peers. Their bark was worse than their bite. But that doesn't mean the music is bad, this is classic American rock. Detroit Rock City and God of Thunder were my favs, Shout it Out Loud was good too. They were established by this point so I bet people went crazy over this album. Look at Gene's insane shoes!

Goofy and high energy but with levels of self-awareness

Ca commence fort avec Detroit Rock city. Un bon album de kiss, ca rock a fond et c'est tout a fait leur style. DRC et God of Thunder sont mes highligths vraiment mais j'ai toujours aimé Kiss. 4.25

I rarely describe anything as a guilty pleasure. If you enjoy it, you enjoy it. But given that Gene Simmons is a terrible human being, and a lot of what is on this album is so cheesy it comes in a wooden box and is actually pronounced 'destroyeur' this is truly a guilty pleasure. Detroit Rock City is just perfect, God of Thunder rocks even of it has a very poor grasp of Norse mythology, and even the slowie, Beth, is that rarest of beasts, a perfectly good Kiss ballad. It adds nothing to culture, but sometimes you just want to whip your nips out and paint your face.

Muy buen disco de rock de una gran banda. Canciones muy memorables y con estilo característico. Le ha faltado algo de fuerza, pero es todo un discazo

KISS rules

Never really got into KISS. Maybe I should have. This album was a fun listen!

[Enter town here] ROCK CITY!

Gets a bit repetitive but hard to beat that opening track

Quit listening half way through but listened to it on the way home and didn't regret it. What a fun album, and of course i enjoyed the bass work

It's Destroyer by Kiss. Opening with one of the best number one tracks. This album just rocks plain and simple. Best they ever did!

This is the classic lineup and their best album by far.

Some say they are corny, but I will always be a fan of Kiss. Fun album.

«Shout It Out Loud» Publicado: 1 de marzo de 1976 «Flaming Youth» Publicado: 30 de abril de 1976 «Detroit Rock City / Beth» Publicado: 28 de julio de 1976 «Beth» Publicado: agosto de 1976

Entertaining and catchy rock album that is very easy to listen to and hard to find flaws

Godt og kort klassisk rock. Masser af guitar, og et par enkelte kedelige numre

Ik ken geen nummers van dit album, en vond het ook niet zo spectaculair. Blijft wel een goede groep

Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Detroit rock city, King of the night time world, Shout it out loud, Beth, Do you love me

Better than I expected...

I was impressed, album is pretty solid

Awesome rock album, some parts I didn't care for but some 5 star songs

Again this is pretty good for what it is. I haven't minded having it on while I'm working. Four stars.

Finding it difficult to dislike this, as stupid as it can be at times. Meets the definition of irrisistable rock n roll.

Is KISS good? Maybe not. But are they fun? Hell yes.

I used to work with a couple of guys that were in a KISS tribute band (DO NOT EVER CALL THEM A COVER BAND) and they would play KISS all. the. time. This is a good album that is just fun rock-n-roll. RIP Dave my God of Thunder - I miss you brother.

I liked it, a bit better recording quality would not hurt

Absolutely great. Loved this album. They have such a powerful good time sound.

First off, I love the segue between some of the songs, it just flows so smoothly. I was pleasantly surprised with how good most of the songs sounded. Highlights were King of The Night Time World, Shout It Out Loud and Beth. The only thing was I felt I was getting bored through listening to some of the songs, and there was one that I just disliked, so I rate it 3.5-4/5 stars.

Für mich war des a klassiker Nichts weltbewegendes aber wenn kiss dann dieses album

It's quite good, you can listen to it anytime, it's pretty balanced, it's got songs to be happy, in love, sad. I liked it

Nunca me ha gustado Kiss, pero sí disfruté el álbum.

Great album!! 😃

Great fun. God of Thunder and Great Expectations are just too much though and take away from the rest which stay just the right side of ridiculous.

Nothing special, I was deciding between 3 and 4.

I knew many more songs than I thought, and I'd say they have aged well for me!

Enjoyed the album very much

Fantástico

Kiss is good fun, good rockin. Detroit Rock City is a classic. Wouldn't say the whole album is classic, but there are a few absolute corker songs here.

Very safe rock music. I don't hate listening to it by any means, but I'd never come back to it. Nothing all that interesting here Favorite Songs: Detroit Rock City, God of Thunder

I all of a sudden have rather ambivalent feelings toward Satan...

Some fun to be found, but does it really belong here?

I'LL GET TO IT I PROMISE 1.Detroit Rock City: MKAYYYY IT WAS A PLEASANT INTRODUCTION TO THE ALBUM. Liked what I've heard so far 2. King of the night time world: so-so 3. God of Thunder: WHO'S THAT KID SPEAKING 4. Great expectations: I also know a guitarist (more like a bassist) whose fingers I saw what they could do and I DEFINITELY wanted to turn into a bass 5. Flaming Youth: fun experience to listen while I burned something into flames 6. Sweet Pain: hEY HeY hey 7. Shout it out loud: CLASSICCC (i know it because of glee) 8. Beth: didn't I also listen to this one in Glee? (CUTE) 9. Do you love me: fair concern If I were they 10. Rock 'N' Roll party: gave me after-concert vibes MMMMMMM solid 3

Good cheesy fun, courtesy of the 70s.

Bäst är Detroit rock city, Shout it out loud, Beth, Do you love me.¹

Good Shit

락과 입맞춤

veddy interesting, sounds super classic rock, really enjoyed it. Was just had to lock in on.

I’m assuming the draw was always the live shows and the experience of the performative side of the act. There isn’t much to get too excited about on the album. It’s alright but doesn’t set the pulse racing too much. I assume the concert experience was when this music became more alive.

Well if we didn’t have KISS and their ridiculous look we wouldn’t have This Is Spinal Tap. Ignoring the visuals and you are left with some pretty basic rock songs which I have to admit is enjoyable in places with Do You Love Me being the high point.

A tremendously shit album. I cannot stress how bad it is. At the same time it’s awesome. I thoroughly eat up this ridiculous, stupid music. Detroit Rock City is my fav song of the album. Beth and Flaming Youth were my other highlights

I saw Kiss on the Destroyer tour. Not a big fan. Cool cover. Lots of guitar hooks on the album. Good songs: Detroit Rock City, Shout it out Loud. Beth: overrated song. A lot of the songs sound the same. Average album: three stars.

1976. The lyrics of the opening song "Detroit Rock City" tells the story of a fan who died in a car crash on the way to a Kiss show. First album with producer Bob Ezrin, who pushed them to elevate their music to the next level.

Way to go, "Beth". You ruined the whole vibe. I hope you're happy.

Detroit Rock City is one of the best live songs ever. Other than that, KISS is not on my list.

Det lød sgu da meget godt.

Cheesy but kinda fun.

I mean I get the appeal of KISS. Are they kitschy as fuck? Sure. But sometimes kids need some accessible rock n roll.

This is Drag.

I liked it... Honestly not much else to say about it. It kinda sounded like Queen though so that's pretty cool

It appears they are actually more than a bunch of chancers with paint on their face in spandex! The album very much reminded me of Queens more fun tracks and I reckon Kiss would have been really fun to see live! ‘God of thunder’ really showcasing the best of the band I reckon but my favourite track was actually ‘flaming youth’ I wasn’t keen on the repetition in ‘shout it out loud! And then the ballad of the album I guess in ‘Beth’ just didn’t seem to go with the album. ‘Rock and roll party’ was not needed either- if they wanted it on the album it should have been the Enterlude so to speak. The album ending with an alternate ‘Sweet pain’ was a better version than the one in middle of the album too! Favourite track- ‘flaming youth’ Worst track- ‘rock and roll party’ I guess as it just wasn’t actually anything 🤷‍♂️ Decent but not amazing. 7/10

An absolute selection box of an album. Far more musical than I had anticipated...a bit like an American version of Queen. Will listen to more, although I suppose this is supposedly the best 🤔 Best Track - Great Expectations. Apparently the one that is least liked by fans, but I thought this almost Roger Waters like in its theatre if not the subject matter of eyeing up groupies 😁 Worst Track - Beth. Yeah it's the breakthrough single but nah....didnt need it. 7/10

This truly sounds your average “rebellious” 13 year old’s favourite album because no one understands him quite like Alice Cooper

Kiss is just a worse Chicago. They'll dress like that and proceed to make desperately milquetoast rock music. Granted, sometimes it really lands in the groove, but that is only occasional across this album. Closer to a 2 than a 4.

For all the satanic panic around their music and stage presence, I was not expecting such a bland album. Like, it was fine, nothing really great or really terrible. I know their studio performances weren’t really the focus of KISS, but still.

something that's worth discussing is KISS, not just the band, but also the brand. when i was... like... 5 years old i assumed that kiss were more famous than the beatles. with their crazy face-painted looks and big fat rock anthems, it wouldn't surprise me if many people from the 70s and 80s thought they were devil worshippers or just plain gimps. it's pretty good for what it is. it's classified as hard rock but i can see why even the youngest kids like the band... it's hard rock that's pretty easy to listen to. besides the standard and pretty melody-focused rock lines, there's a bit of an orchestral influence as well. rock music made for singing in cars a-la again it's just... these guy were the big "shock rock" guys but their music is absurdly tame. even back then, compare it with the pool other stuff and it's tame. even with this in mind, it's still a generally good classic rock album. turn it on if you wanna make your papa or grandpappy proud.

It's simple, hooky, party rock. If you're a teenager growing up while this was new and popular, it would be a lot of fun to sing along to in your car, especially with friends. Perfect fodder for a foundational experience. I bet it makes for a fun concert, too. If you didn't grow up with it like that... it's very meh.

Good mindless fun. Shout out to my KISS-loving gf

This album is nice, very easy-listening (maybe too much for my liking). The songs are not outstanding, although, just some tracks that have interesting ideas, maybe not that much developed, but that make them something else than an average glam metal song, which, to be fair, is not a genre that attracts me much – but let's be openminded. So, well, it's been an enjoyable record, a funny one, not much interesting for me to really like it, but I have to admit that it's nice.

Honestly expected more chaos from a KISS album. Detroit Rock City is good but everything after that just kind of misses the mark for me. Still liked the general sound though so I’ll give it a 3

I never listened to KISS back in the day. Maybe it was on the radio but I don’t remember it. This was better than I expected. Just basic music to rock out to, with a little bit of out-of-place pretension.

Meh, it's allright 3/5

WEIRDLY GOOD I WANNA ROCK AND ROLL ALL DAY

Decent rock album

my ass

Rock light para monjas y nenes suaves. No me gustó para nada.

Wasn't massively enamoured.

Possibly the great masters of the theatrics of rock & roll. They're a pretty stock 70's arena rock band, by a lot of measures. Highly competent, certainly, but you might expect something extreme from the costumes. Kiss are kind of the rock equivalent of professional wrestling: very competent at the thing they're advertising (music/athletics) but secretly even better at the other thing they're doing (theatre, in both cases). Especially if you missed out on their branding blitz over the first twenty or thirty years of career (they had everything from action figures to comic books to capitalize on their image), it's easy to just take them as a 70s rock band in costume. Back in the 90s, I would've told you they were the most committed sellouts in the history of music (citation needed, probably). In the end, Kiss is pretty good. 'Detroit Rock City' and 'Shout It Out Loud' are great tunes, though little more than surface deep. This is a record that seems like it needs added context to explain its necessity. Kiss didn't stand only on the strength of their musicianship and songwriting and I think that also shows up as a listener, fifty years after Destroyer's release. I know why Kiss is here but I don't know if a twenty-something will get it without watching a documentary. They sound a bit like a mashup of Queen, The Who and Alice Cooper. They can fight with Cooper but I don't think they can remotely challenge either of the others. On the other hand, the music comes across as more sincere than a lot of what's been in Dimery's great List. The schlock they employed to sell it kind of undermines that but there are songs here. Anyway, if you don't already know who Kiss were, give this a listen. And then watch a live performance from as far back as you can find. Skip their interviews, though -- Gene Simmons is a self-absorbed dingdong. 3.4/5. I refuse to round up to 4. Fifth Dimension by The Byrds was almost this good.

Wahhh really so stupid, but I don’t hate them.

I have a few bands that I’d put on my personal Mount Rushmore of the greatest bands of all time. Now, this is my Mount Rushmore, not THE Mount Rushmore, meaning nostalgia plays a huge part in the construction. One of those bands would have to be KISS. Today’s album is Destroyer by KISS, and it’s an album I am very familiar with. It’s looked at by some as the greatest KISS album they ever recorded. I imagine most hardcore KISS fans might disagree with that. I would, I’d say Love Gun is my personal favorite. But I digress. Looking at this album's tracks right now, I am kind of “meh” on six of the tracks. As a kid, I’d essentially skip these songs. However, I do think that of the classic lineup, this is probably their most accessible, or pop-sounding, of all the KISS records. At least without being too pop like Unmasked. Track 1 is Detroit Rock City, and while I’m not a huge fan of the album as a whole, this is a top 10, if not top 5, all-time KISS song. It’s got great riffs and tells a tragic story. Drinking and driving isn’t cool, people. The song opens with the sound of a rock star getting into his car. He’s drunk. As he’s getting into his car, there is a prophetic news report talking about a rock star who was killed in a car crash. This is a great live song, but I miss the little details you get on the album. That riff kicks in, and it’s party time. Everyone is hitting at their top lick. Peter Criss is keeping a tight groove, and Gene Simmons is showing off his prowess on the bass. And lead guitarist Ace Frehley (I love you, Ace!) is just rocking out. I love this song so much that it alone almost makes up for the other lamer songs on the album. “12 o'clock, I gotta, gotta rock There's a truck ahead, lights starin' at my eyes Oh, my God, no time to turn I got to laugh, I know I'm gonna die Why?” Just one of the best-written KISS songs ever. Track 2 is King of the Night Time World, and I never really got into this song. I have no idea why. I have heard it enough that I could hum it or sing it with no lyrics, but something is missing for me. “I’m the king of the night time world And you're my headlight queen.” I just don’t get it, I guess. Ace is playing great as always. The song is barely three minutes long. It isn’t horrible, but it never connected with me. Track 3 is God of Thunder, and it’s another song that didn’t connect with me. Now, live in concert, it’s a highlight of every show. Simmons spits blood and turns into the real God of Thunder. In person, this is one of my favorite songs. It could be as simple as for a young country boy raised up in the church, this song always felt evil to me. There’s talk of gods, demons, robbing someone of their virgin soul. In the 80s, that was enough to get some “weird” boys locked up for satanic murders that never occurred. Plus, as my brother pointed out, when they play this live, the tempo is sped up. On the album, it's played really slowly. There is also what sounds like little kids yelling throughout the song, which always creeped me out. Holy crap. I think this might be the first time I’ve listened to this song with earbuds, and I’m hearing either a piano or some sort of chimes playing in the background on the last verse. Whoa. That was unexpected. According to our good friends, Wikipedia, it seems producer Bob Exrin played keyboards and sound effects on this song. I don’t think I ever heard the keyboards until just now. Ezrin was a genius. Not only did he produce this album, but he also produced a ton of great, all-time albums, from KISS and Alice Cooper up to the Deftones and Thirty Seconds To Mars. Track 4 is Great Expectations, another song that just didn’t connect with me. It’s more of a ballad, I'd say? I don’t know how to explain it. It sounds like it could have been a Meatloaf or a Moot the Hoople song. But the lyrics are about a girl in the crowd watching Simmons play bass and her wanting him to play her like a bass, essentially. It’s dumb, really. I think maybe that’s why it never connected. “You watch me singing this song You see what my mouth can do And you wish you were the one I was doing it to And you watch me playin' guitar And you feel what my fingers can do And you wish you were the one I was doing it to Well, listen You've got great expectations You've got great expectations” It’s lyrics like those that make it hard to be a KISS fan sometimes. KISS was about as subtle as a sledgehammer lyrically, but they had Ace (I love you, Ace!) to bail them out quite a bit. The song has an orchestra, piano, and a choir singing. It's a little classier than the usual KISS song. I will say, this song has to be heard to be believed. Even as a kid, I thought it was dumb. Maybe it was supposed to be a joke, and I took it seriously. The problem is that Simon had written so many bad or lame lyrics that these lyrics were in keeping with his more serious stuff. He was the God of Thunder, you know. Track 5 is Flaming Youth, another song that I just didn’t connect with. It isn’t a KISS song, really. It’s also sung from the point of view of a high school kid. It’s hard to be a 30-year-old man singing about high school stuff. Alice Cooper can barely get away with it. This was the second single off the album. The song is very anthemic about the youth using their energy and rebelliousness to set the world on fire. Kids are our future! And look what those teenagers in 1976 have done for our future, which is today. Um, uh, yeah....Moving on… Track 6 is Sweet Pain and to be honest, I have no memory of this song. It starts out as lame, as the last two songs. It’s another with Simmons on lead vocals, meaning he more than likely wrote the lyrics. Maybe one reason I didn’t like it as a kid was that I had no comprehension of S & M, as this is the song’s subject. “My leathers fit tight around me My whip is always beside me You want the same thing every day I'll teach you love a different way You'll learn to love me and my sweet pain” I don’t exactly see Simmons being someone who is into this stuff either. It’s not good, and it seems like Simmons may be trying to use this song to recruit a different kind of groupie. Track 7 is Shout It Out Loud and thank the good Lord above, we have a great song. This song is uptempo and has a good message, everybody’s got to rock and roll. This was the first single off the album, and it charted at 31 on the Billboard 100. It also became a live show feature for the rest of KISS’s touring career. The song is also just under three minutes, which is perfect for a concert opener. This is one of the songs that saves this album. Track 8 is Beth, and this is probably one of the most controversial KISS songs ever. It’s just drummer Peter Criss singing with a piano and orchestra. It’s a pure pop ballad that I’m not sure everyone in the band wanted to record or play live every night, but it became their biggest hit. The song hit number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song is about a rocker having to play with the band rather than be home with his woman, making sweet, sweet love down by the fire. The song is undeniable. It’s beautiful, and Criss’s voice was perfect for it. I can imagine how people were blown away when this came out and found out it was KISS. Track 9 is Do You Love Me, another song that I really don’t connect with, but I do like it, kind of. It’s just a fun, throwaway kind of pop-rock song. I think what really kills the song is the rather basic lyrics. “You really like my limousine You like the way the wheels roll You like my seven inch leather heels And goin' to all of the shows, but Do you love me, do you love me really love me” “You like the way the wheels roll?” Is he talking to a toddler? Ugh. KISS was never a band that wrote great lyrics, though Ace has some all-time riffs (I love you, Ace!), as does Paul Stanley. They were a band that had a great look, an incredible live show, and they were good enough at writing and playing music. Obviously, they did something right. They just print money. Track 10 is Rock ‘N’ Roll Party and I have no memory of this song. Apparently, it’s a hidden track on the vinyl release after Do You Love Me and it’s just kind of an amalgamation of the songs on the album in a live performance or something. It doesn’t count as a song. And that’s Destroyer. It’s amazing how there are some terrible songs on this album, but based on the strength of like three or four songs, this album is looked at as a classic. non-KISS I can see how a casual fan or a non KISS fan can maybe see this album as their best, but it isn’t. Again, I would argue Love Gun is their best album. My brother Dustin may argue that Rock and Roll Over is their best album. Oooh, yeah, Rock and Roll Over has Mr. Speed on it, and I think that’s a criminally underrated song with one of the best riffs Stanley ever came up with. This album is fine if you want to dip your toe into the fire. But, Rock and Roll Over and Love Gun are KISS at their peak. Their first three albums are also great, but the production is horrible and killed the vibe. Is Destroyer a must-listen album? For me, no, but if you’re a casual KISS fan or non-fan, you can definitely start here. But, don’t end here, as they were really good before and after this album.

I really enjoy glam rock albums that are less cheesy than I expected. This was as cheesy as I expected. Credit to them for keeping it stompy and under 35 mins though.

Feels a little dated at times, but I still enjoyed for the most part. Rating: 6/10 Favorite Song: Detroit Rock City

It was fine, not amazing but at least a little interesting.

This album is much better than it has any right to be. It's fun, it has a couple of real rockers (Detroit Rock City is such a good time), and it doesn't overstay its welcome. Just a really solid album from a band that you can't take seriously. I gave Aerosmith's Pump a very generous 3 and I'm giving this a very stingy 3.

Clásico de rock inigualable

Fav song: Beth

Some good songs but I find them relatively cheesy.

The review before I listened to the album: "Finally, a spectacle band that actually rocked." (5) After listening: "I remember this being great. What happened?" (1) Maybe it's me, not them... I'll stick with a 3.

Kind of a banger. Although I'm taking away a half a point because the band members are insufferable picks. 3.5/5

ハードロック

I've never been a fan of Knights In Satan's Service ;) but I knew most of these songs. It doesn't make them any better. This is probably their best album - But it's still KISS.

Man, just don’t think I’m much of a KISS fan outside of the hits. Don’t know why it doesn’t hit for me. A couple good songs but a lot felt meh. 2.75

Overall good album

Medio repetitivo todo, rompió con Beth. Las canciones que ya tenía solo son las que me gustaron, el resto meh.

I always thought KISS was some big bad heavy rock band, turns out they are Van Halen with Makeup

I always suspected that their cultural impact had more to do with the outfits and characters than the music, this proved I was right. There's a couple of fun songs but nothing I can see myself wanting to listen to again

For an album named "Destroyer" it sure didn't rock as much as I wanted it to. It was fine. 3.3

I mean we all already know what this is

Fine dad rock. couple good trackz

Has anybody ever done hair ballads worse than Kiss? The third star is for the bassline on Detroit Rock City, which is an absolute all-timer.

I was always pretty meh on Kiss, this didn’t change that.

This album is cited by so many great rock musicians as their gateway album to rock and metal. However it might be a case of time and place as I didn’t grow up with this and listening to it now I don’t fully understand the appeal. There’s a sort of showtune bombast to this album that kind of reminds me of what a lot of rock bands were kind of going for in the mid-‘70s but I don’t think that this album has stood the test of time very well though. I do like some KISS songs here and there but I’m not sure that they’ve ever recorded a full studio album that is some sort of masterpiece. So to me what we have here is just a plain old good rock album and perhaps a few more listens in the right mood and atmosphere might make me rate this as better than average.

I have heard of KISS I had not listened to Destroyer I have heard some of the songs Mixed emotions on this. It has moments where it clicks and it's great Rock. But it's off set with some pretty average schlop. Maybe more about the look and perception than the quality of musicianship. Probably got many kids into rock though, and like it or not KISS are iconic. It belongs on the list.

I like it more than I thought and care to admit

I had high hopes for kiss, as they were in scooby doo, but unfortunately it was just alright

Not bad, but not really my genre

It was probably a fun time, but it did not live up to its legendary status. 3.4.

Good but not especially memorable.

This is the album that made me realise that apparently I like metal/hard rock better than punk/post-punk. A couple of ok tracks on the second side but this isn’t quite a full 3.

Some tunes some absolute dross

Alright. Better than I expected

This has some of Kiss's best songs while being an extremely mid album. Detroit Rock City, King of the Nighttime World, God of Thunder, and Shout it Out Loud all RULE and every other song is total cheeks.

One of the 3 star reviews already said it best, but I didn’t dislike this album as much as I thought I would. Closet to a 3.25 for me. I can totally see why it was a hit at the time it was released. But something about it is very eh.

I had higher hopes for this but ended up thinking it was just so so. Beth was my fave track and got added to my 1001 albums playlist.

Definitely the first Kiss album I’ve listened to front to back. Besides “rock and roll all nite,” and “Beth,” I’m not sure I’d heard a Kiss song before this. But it was generally what I expected. Beth is a great song, the rest was reasonably fun. I don’t think they have a new convert to Kiss Army, but I didn’t hate it.

Pretty alright.

Detroit Rock City and God of Thunder are good.

Hard rock, heavy metal.

Didn't have high expectations, but this was more enjoyable than I thought.

Hair rock

Glam rock

что с тяжёлой гитарной музыкой) некоторая нелепая, некоторая приятная

KISS was a band I was aways aware of due to their inclusion is so much pop culture, such as Family Guy to name but one, but I never actually stopped to listen until today. I've heard so much of this type of music on this journey already (this is only my 66th album) that it's somewhat difficult to separate it all. I understand that KISS wasn't always hair metal, but some it is here for sure. "God of Thunder" is more of a hard rock track and I enjoyed this one a lot; epic vocals and, although repetitive, had a really catchy riff. Even after a couple of listens, "Great Expectations" and "Flaming Youth" I found hugely forgettable. "Sweet Pain" although fun, has that anthem feel to it which is growing slightly tiresome now. Despite this, some of the guitar work was great. Same could be said about "Shout it out loud" too. "Beth" was a wonderful change up; I am always a sucker for these emotional variations in albums and I've come to expect them as part of my criteria for what makes a truly great album. Overall, it was, unfortunately for it, more of the same of what I've heard from this genre; it definitely is a one trick pony in a lot of respects.

3.5 Big, dumb, stupid, fun. The hits are hits for a reason.

Listening to this I could hear the influence on late rock and metal bands. Not my particular taste but I can recognise their contribution

Not a half bad album. Love the start with Detroit Rock City. Enjoy the versatility of the album and how they can do more than the hard rock they look the part of.

I’ve always thought Kiss were a bit of a satirical band (but in a very self aware way?) and after listening to Destroyer I’m still not completely sure, the ambiguity of it all makes it more fun to be honest. I found that this album felt a bit rock opera-y, it has very dramatic arrangements with layered guitars, backing choirs and sound effects which made it feel a bit theatrical at times. Vocals were fine, lyrics were a bit young wild and free, over the top, kiss always give this vibe of being larger than life while simultaneously singing about that most conventional things ever lol. I didn’t mind this album, it didn’t take itself too seriously, or at least it didn’t feel like it does. I can imagine the exaggerative/theatrical performance had mothers going cuckoo bananas at the time so there’s that.

It's just not that good

I'm not that familiar with Kiss but this album didn't seem to be as heavy as I was expecting for them. Doesn't seem particularly dated despite being 50 years old.

3.1 I guess KISS have to be on here. 70s rock, helped spur the glam metal movement imo, super famous. But my god they are so mediocre. None of it is that bad, but it's really not much than that. There are so many better options out there. I'm very unsurprised that they didn't stand the test of time unlike a lot of other popular classic rock acts, and have gone in the way of the same glam metal bands they inspired.

Interesting listen as I’m not that familiar with KISS outside of their biggest hits. It’s a mix of heavy rock and softer piano driven arrangements. Overall I think the songs are mostly throw away, trite material. Not ale tracks include Detroit Rock City, Shout It Out Loud, Beth.

Corny as hell, I can't take them seriously. How is this music associated with macho-70's culture? Best Song: Detroit Rock City Rating: 5.5/10 Stars: 3/5

Feels like a week album on their part. Songs felt disorganised

It surprises me that I haven't listened to more KISS -- hard rock and glam rock are a lot of fun and can make important statements in my opinion. So, I thought there would be more of that in this album? It was more vanilla than expected for a band who dresses the way they do and maintains a reputation of being hardcore. But I didn't hate it. 3 stars.

Fun but also extremely hokey

This album makes me when to drink a case of beer and drive my dad's 69 Mustang at top speed. The good songs were awesome and the other songs were generic.

Never really been a KISS fan but I like some of their hits - a greatest hits sort of band. This album only had one song I know, all the others evidently exist elsewhere, so that was slightly disappointing, nonetheless, this was a fun half hour or so. I’m not sure I’d choose to return but their appeal is ever apparent.

I knew Detroit Rock City, Shout It Out Loud, and Beth. It was nice and short. Wasn’t terrible.

Detroit rock city is an awesome song. But I hate Beth. I like some other stuff on here too. Was never a huge kiss fan. But enjoyed listening to this.

After listening to Detroit Rock City, I think that I may have had an incorrect view of what KISS actually sounded like. We'll see how the rest of the album goes, but I really enjoyed the guitar sound and the overall vibe of the music. Sonically, I enjoyed this album a lot more then I thought I would, I think prior to this I was under the impression that KISS was mostly screaming. I enjoyed the guitars and drums a lot. The music was varied and interesting. Thematically the album felt dark at times, I couldn't understand all the lyrics, but there were also some much lighter parts and I liked the introduction to the album.

seems like pretty generic metal/rock, kinda liked it still.

Better than I'd expected it to be, that's not to say it was incredible and the genre still isn't really my thing but it was alright to listen to. I honestly though Kiss were more 80s than 70s, at least that's how they fitted in my head, I was going to say more around the time of Iron Maiden but Google tells me they were a 70s band too. If I remember correctly 'Detroit Rock City' and 'Flaming Youth' were some of the better ones, alongside 'Great Expectations' which felt like more of a ballad and was a nice change of pace. 68/100

It was okay. Generic 80s, felt kind of harmless. I'm sure it had some cultural impact at the time but looking back now there's not much to be said.

never heard much from KISS, except a couple of their hits. definitely never listened to anything from this album rating excludes the outro Detroit Rock City - 4/5 King of the Night Time World - 4/5 God of Thunder - 4/5 Great Expectations - 3/5 Flaming Youth - 3/5 Sweet Pain - 3/5 Shout It Out Loud - 4/5 Beth - 2/5 Do You Love Me - 3/5 Average score: 3.3/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ pretty middle of the road in terms of enjoyment. a few fun tracks but i don't think they'll be very memorable for me personally

Surprisingly decent. First time listening to Kiss, not really understanding the hate.

"You watch me singing this song You see what my mouth can do And you wish you were the one I was doing it to." Pure. Fuckin. Poetry. Ok, so, it's Kiss, and despite the Beethoven, not really expected to stretch your musical tastes beyond "this is rock-'n'-roll, baby." In that regard, it certainly delivers.

Favorite Track: Detroit Rock City

Kiss, et mytisk band for alle barn. Ganske ordinær hard rock. Mange fengende rockelåter her, i tillegg til noen eksperimentelle eskapader. Great Expectations er skikkelig rar, og det funker faktisk for meg. Første halvdel er bunnsolid, mens siste halvdel er forglemmelig. Treer. Top 3: God Of Thunder, Detroit Rock City, King Of The Night Time Worldu

Veldig usikker her. Detroit Rock city e jo ei av tidenes åpningslåta! Men andre halvdel av albumet var veldig slitsomt å høre gjennom. Massete å repetativt. Kiss på topp: Detroit Rock city, god of thunder, Great expectations Kiss på bunn: do you love me, sweet pain

Det e no helt greit. Detroit Rock City e 👌

Eh.. hørt imens jeg bakte kake. Helt whatever.

you cant dis the kiss

What a weird band to get popular and be a cultural phenomenon.

Kind of bored with this one, KISS is a hit or miss with me. Some of their songs really rock but this album was just meh.

?? The band with the cat guy?

I think I agree with Vaasavi on this one. KISS' contribution is primarily an aesthetic one to define glam rock/metal (and perhaps make it more acceptable manly men to be into). There are one or two good songs on this thing (Beth is my standout, which feels like an odd choice), but the rest are pretty fine.

My dislike of Kiss comes almost entirely from them doing the "bleeehhh" tongue thing. I've found it hard to cast them into the church of metal given the fact that there was even a nun in the twenties that was absolutely shredding on the guitar, and I credit much of their contribution to the genre an aesthetic one. That being said, as a rock album, I had fun with this. It's obvious why they were such a hit. The songs were fun and bright. Not all of them were that interesting to me, only a few real standouts.

Detroit rock city is a banger, the rest of the album, not so much

Brisk, economical, working man’s rock. In some respects, doesn’t really match their provocative (for the time), clownish image.

Less metal than I expected

Impossible to argue with how iconic KISS are as an act. I'm sure their relevance is waning by this point, but even as a kid of the 90s Gene Simmons and the Kiss costume were instantly recognizable. So much so that some friends and I donned the face paint for Halloween early high school. As for the music they created, I think the general consensus is it is just fine. I mean glam metal isn't really my thing to begin with, but its hard to deny Detroit Rock City of its flowers as something of a 70s rock anthem. Otherwise, the songs here are fine, but ultimately forgettable. With that said, I do think that the vocals are top notch for the genre, though I could have done without the Meatloaf esq balladry of Beth. Pretty okay, but never will I ever be back. Probably should be a 2 in the context of this list, but it feels wrong... So the lowest of 3s

Detroit Rock City *might* be a top 100 song. Thought this would be straight shooting hair metal, but then we had some Randy Newman type shit in Beth. Couple songs also sounded like Bruce. Nothing wrong with some glam rock, but this album has some odd turns in it that threw me off a couple times. Shout-out the secret KISS level in Tony Hawks Pro Skater

KISS is so damn cheesy but you gotta love it some times. Detroit Rock City is an all time rock song. The rest of the album is so bland. Beth has no place at all being on this album.

One of the first genderbent drag acts to make its way into the Boomer collective consciousness. The act is either radical rockstars or musical clowns depending on your tastes. I can't say I love it but they have some good tracks that I appreciated while speeding through the one way roads of downtown raleigh.

Fun glam hard rock

First full listen to a KISS album. Very distinct sound. Not the biggest fan of the band but okay album.

This doesn't sound very good. I like Beth though. It's got very pretty production, even if the singing is still ass

This is a fun one. Some of it is a bit silly, but that's KISS. The big hitters are among my favourites (God of Thunder, Shout It Out Loud, Detroit Rock City), and Beth is Bob Ezrin production at it's finest (actually sounds very similar to his arrangements on The Wall). I'm not a member of the KISS army by any stretch, but this is a solid glam rock album.

It was fine.

Fun to listen to.

Still gonna lose my mind in Detroit rock city!

1/7/26. KISS was my dad's favorite band as a kid. But this album was meh. 6/10

I don't understand KISS. Supposedly the hard men of US rock but they dress up, wear make-up and quite a lot of their songs are twee. Also, on the strength of this album, none of them can carry a tune in a bucket vocally.

Tbh not a huge kiss guy but would like them live more I bet

Beth is sooo goated. Also great expectations was real funny and enjoyable. I think you really need the visual element of Kiss to really enjoy them though. Detroit Rock Citay!!!

Hm, wenn nur ein Song hervorsticht hat das Album keine 4 Sterne verdient, oder? oooooder?

Hab mir mehr erhofft von so einer legendären Band. Schade

Nothing too crazy, but some solid 70s pop rock. Fun jams, catchy tunes, pizzazz

its kiss yuck

They are more a product than a band. Definitely made some iconic tunes though.

Yes, I know it’s a bit stupid, and KISS are very unpopular with music nerds, but I though that this was alright.

classic

A great man once said "Whatever you think of KISS, musically or otherwise, no band was more determined to put on a good show". Not an exact quote but very close, and that great man was Geddy Lee of Rush. I've never particularly looked for any music by Kiss minus "I was made for loving you" and the very occasional Love Gun, so I knew what I was expecting and this was more or less as expected. But I ultimately agree with the sentiment, I think all of this album has a very upbeat enjoyable energy, it may not be the creme de la creme of rock music but it doesn't have to be to be enjoyable. I was surprised how much of this album is bass forward, and I very much appreciate it. It stops the album being majorly one note with the guitars and I think if the album of the same year, Boston, had done this here and there it would resonate a touch more with me. That being said, and I imagine this is lost on a lot of people listening to only this and the occasional other hit, but the production of this album is a lot cleaner and more ambitious than the previous raw rock albums that came before it in the discography. As a result, and with another direct comparison to Boston, this album is just a touch too clean for the sound I'd want from KISS I think. The songs are catchy, the riffs are solid but it's just not interesting. Totally serviceable. But where Boston had downs, it had those because it had major ups and interesting ideas. No song on this album is as musically interesting as Foreplay. I also think, as mentioned right at the start, the clean feel means that even more than before you can't quite get the same feel as you would seeing KISS live when I imagine they were at their best. That being said this album was massive, probably because it was clean enough to finally be so but it does feel almost mechanically made to be popular, like there's a metaphorical lack of light in their eyes. A perfect commercial rock album, 30 minutes of slightly sexy but ultimately not too sexy to be marketable music. It sort of gives me very similar feelings to "This Year's Model", just in a different flavour but with all the same criticisms. Especially in the view of, if I were alive in 1976 would I actively listen to this? No, I'd be listening to Rising by Rainbow, 2112 by Rush and Boston by Boston. 1976 is actually a REALLY good year for rock so this album is definitely too safe to leave an impression. Best songs: Beth (Lovely change of pace) Worst songs: N/A Rank compared to everything else so far: 23/29 (below Coat of Many Colours, above Come Away With Me)

I have incredibly negative things to say about the Kiss Army, Gene Simmons, and the discography at large. I'll spare you the details. This album itself is mostly chud. Maybe 2 great songs + 1 good song + 1 okay ballad. But like the riffs are tight, the drums groove and the rock harmonies aren't too gone for my ears. Love the band's performance on Detroit Rock City. Will always be in the pantheon of rock greatness. Average out all my negative sentiments and the tolerable music you'll get 3 stars. Fuck you Gene Simmons. RIP Ace Frehley

An early work by an influencial rock band.

Nothing special here, it sounds samey, but the sound kicks ass nevertheless.

- Shameless cock rock - On the one hand, fairly predictable and shallow, on the other hand, pretty good fun - Nothing that's going to leave a lasting impression on me to be honest.

1* so many clichés 5* they were first to quite a few of those cliches 3* overall

Detroit Rock City is an absolute banger. I like everything about that song; the sloppy drums, the harmonizing solo, the average lyrics... It all just works. Beth is pleasant too. I know Peter Kriss sucks. I know he can't sing. And I know he probably didn't write it. But it has a clumsy pleasantness to it all. The rest of the album though... You've got a bunch of Gene Simmons songs that are a bit perverse and awful (at best). Paul Stanley songs all seem to follow the same format. I knew Shout it Loud was on the album, but second guessed myself it was it on two or three songs first. 3 stars. 12 o clock, I gotta rock! (What a line!).

Oh hell yeah, it’s Friday afternoon and school is out. You and your friends have big plans to party hard. You’ll start at your mate Diesel’s house cos his parents are away you can smash some beers without being bothered, and then you’ll head out. Where you’ll go? That’s the best part. You don’t even know. You crack into some beers and order some pizzas. You realise you don’t actually have much to catch up on with your friends, cos you’ve just spent the whole day together at school. Time to head out then? Actually, you haven’t heard of any parties going on tonight, and not everyone has fake IDs. Might as well just finish all your beers and regroup later. Actually, that pizza was quite filling and now your drunkenness has plateaued thanks to those 4% beers. You don’t even want to go out. Might just crash on Diesel’s couch.

Not bad

You know what, it's exactly what it says it is. And Beth is a great song.

Fun, good times. Weird band members that only got weirder

Percent

Someone once said to me "There's no such thing as a GOOD kiss song" and I decided to investigate, and you know what I found out? Their songs are FUN and they ROCK, but none of them are actually GOOD... 3.5 Stars.

3.49/5 I don't really get why so many people rated this album so bad. Guys, you need to chill ^^. Although I'm not the very biggest fan of Glam Rock/Glam Metal either, you can't deny that KISS pioneered the genre before most people knew about its' existence. For an album from '76, this is actually not bad at all. Sure it's in good company with so many other good Rock albums from that period, but that comparison doesn't make "Destroyer" bad. It actually says a lot if you still know about this album today despite of the competition surrounding it. Musically, it's straight-forward, slightly theatrical Glam Rock. It sticks out due to their approach and showmanship, and regarding how successful KISS were back in the day, there can't be that many bad things to say. Sure, it's dated, but it's from fucking 1976. I can't of an album from the same time period that doesn't feel dated 😅 Yeah all in all, not the best, but better than many other things we've had to listen to so far. I think close 3.7 is deserved.

An album with rocks in its head that also rocks. I actually liked the quieter songs on this the most (Great Expectations & Beth). Better than I expected, while not being something I plan to revisit all that much!

This album is no good, but its influence is inarguable.

Good listen!

Some iconic songs but mostly bland, ridiculous and highly egotistical

I was wanting it to be heavier throughout the album

Now I've finally listened to a whole Kiss album. They're just like not that good of a band, but kudos on them for going so far with the image to distract people from that fact.

This was better than I thought it would be, different from what I expected. Not a 4, but a solid 3 and easy listening. Maybe it's a 4 if I was at a BBQ and it was 80 degrees and sunny out... I miss the summer

I would've thought I'd enjoy it more given that I've heard Detroit Rock City and Shout It Out Loud previously. But truthfully, if it wasn't for those two tracks, this album would probably be no more than a 2.

My hot take: these guys would not be widely famous without the makeup. They seem like a very average rock band. Not bad, but definitely not too special 🤷‍♀️

Didn’t age well since I thought much more of this when it came out when I was in Jr high. But couldn’t actually give it a 2 star either - so 2 1/2 rounded to 3.

Good album.

This is the first time I've actually listened to this album and I was surprised to see it was only 34 minutes long. There are some of their big hits as well as some other great songs that I have never heard before. It's not bad but I suspect their secret was in the live performance. Never saw them live but know several people that are obsessed. Too bad Ace Frehley just passed away, he seemed to really rock. I'm not exactly a fan but the album was not bad and probably rocked. I suspect the things I don't really like are Paul and Gene's personalities. They both seem a bit much.

The best track on the record is “Beth”, while “Shout it Out Loud” and “Detroit Rock City” were minor hits on AOR. I haven’t heard those two for quite awhile. The remaining tracks are forgettable. Overall this is pretty standard 70’s rock.

Cool album cover. Reminds me of BB Comics. That's probably the best part of this album, though. I was torn between a 2 and 3, but it has good energy and didn't drag, so I'll go 3.

Listening to Detroit Rock City: oh hey, maybe this will be a pretty rockin album Listening to everything else: okay, I can see why people only ever mention DRC...

ionno isrk

I really want to like KISS more than I do. It always just seems so resoundingly mediocre to me. Destroyer is no different.. 3/5

Kiss checks a lot of boxes for me (loud guitars, gimmicky, don't take themselves too seriously) - but I just can't get there. I like a few songs here and there but overall, they just don't do it for me. And this is coming from someone who's favorite band is The Darkness, so feels like it should be up my alley. But it's not. 2 stars but rounding up to 3 for Detroit Rock City because that song rules.

A classic that I have some nostalgia for - Kiss Dynasty was the first album I bought with my own money. It’s a bit dated and cheesy, and there are some clunkers but I think it’s still enjoyable and Kiss belongs on the list for their "rock and roll superheroes" shtick. 3.5⭐️

This album had their best cover art but a better choice for a "must hear" Kiss album would have been "Alive!". When Kiss broke I was at the right age to be their target audience. I loved the whole gimmick of the band and a lot of their songs rocked. I liked this a lot more as a teen than I do now but it was kind of a fun re-visit.

Standard over-the-top commercialized rock that KISS is known for. Enjoyable enough- I could see being a teenager in the 70s and being really moved by it. Overall- decent album

Catchy songs, good riffs. The production and mix is kind of weird (guitars sound soft) and the lyrics are vain.

Fun fact: it took me nearly 50 years to listen to a Kiss album.

Actually kinda really fun

not in a rocking chair

Enjoyed it more than i thought i would, still not a fan of bland glam rock

Weird urge to worship Satan all of a sudden. Probably unrelated.

With all due respect to the recently deceased Mr. Frehley, without the face paint they’re fairly indistinguishable from other bands of that era like Thin Lizzy and Deep Purple. I would like to say the music was more interesting, but it just didn’t hook me. Rounding up from 2.5 out of respect for their “legend status.“

Couple good ones. Pretty simplistic songs, though, as a whole. Can definitely see their influence on the 80's, for better or worse.

It’s hard to get past the gimmick. I know there’s more beneath the backup and glam, but I’m not interested enough to find out.

KISS’s Destroyer. Ace Frehley’s guitar never sounded bigger or meaner. “Detroit Rock City,” “Shout It Out Loud,” “Beth.” Ace is gone, but this one’s forever.

This album itself is pretty inoffensive and middle of the road. However, KISS does need to be on this list. Is there actually an album out there that captures their stage presence and cultural impact? Would Alive! be a better choice? Who knows, I'm not going to listen to find out.

I like how the mix of God of Thunder tries to suggest something more interesting than the song is going on, which is kind of Kiss in a nutshell. I quite like them for that. When I was a kid I was aware of them and like a lot of kids thought their costumes were really exciting. But I never actually heard them. Over time while listening to my brother's much heavier record collection I built up Kiss in my mind. Man I was so disappointed when I finally heard them as an adult. But now as I advance to old age I'm more forgiving and can indulge in a false nostalgia for how much I would have liked them as a kid. Kind of mind boggling that guy's so fixated on selling that they didn't put out Do You Love Me? as a single.

3/5 ok

actually really cool!

Definitely Enjoyed this over other KISS albums despite this only manages to be mediocre the vast majority of the time. I enjoy the front a lot more than the back, the way the album opens feels like showing off and I enjoy that. God of Thunder is a phenomenal track too. 6/10

Yup, this is KISS. It’s not bad, and has fun moments. Not for me overall, but they’re an iconic piece of music history, whichever side of fandom one is on.

Standard Kiss

KISS always felt like a brand first and band second, the music just feels like empty calories to me. the scooby doo crossover is goated though

It’s fun. Nothing more, nothing less.

Not sure why this one his here. It's fine but doesn't seem like anything special enough to make the list. KISS always struck me as being more about flash over substance, and I didn't get a lot of substance from this album. It's as about as deep as a puddle, as they say. Still, it's not that bad. I enjoyed a number of the songs. It seems more like something to just turn your brain off and enjoy than anything meant to be analyzed. Overall: 2.6/5

This is an album that’s energetic, theatrical, and occasionally overblown. Favourite Songs: Detroit Rock City, Shout It Out Loud, Beth. Least Favourite Songs: Great Expectations, Sweet Pain, Rock and Roll Party.

cool rock

Kiss’ famous face paint was actually a total rip off of one of Len’s famous Halloween costumes! Len was so upset they didn’t credit him he refused to go to Gene Simmons wedding to Shannon Tweed! 3.0 7/10 Shout It Out Loud

Standard rock that might be very new before?

This is a tough one. The album was okay with technically well played songs. Detroit rock city is great. I did like the innuendoes and entendre's. I can’t tell if they are serious or parodying a rock band but it was a fun listen. I’d call this a heavy 3.

Man rock. Fun. Shallow. Beth is such a bad song.

Questionable sonic choices here. Church bells really don't fit here lol. Kiss is a strange band, pop rock and disco but with Heavy Metal appearance. Some songs here do go quite hard, Detroit Rock City is genuinely good and God Of Thunder is one of their harder songs as well. The rest of the songs are all forgettable generic pop tunes though. Kiss is hugely influential for their appearances, stage theatrics and extreme level of selling out, but their music is never what was important about them. Perhaps their disco album or Kiss Alive would've been more fitting as a pick for this list.

I desperately want to live in a world in which this was considered cool; but I live in my world and these guys are just a bunch of cosplayers singing about weird ass mythology. Pretty good for hard rock but it’s just the corniest shit I can imagine.

Ridiculous, childish, and entertaining.

Hair metal doesn’t get much better than this. Unfortunately I don’t see myself listening to this other than for the nostalgia.

The music was decent, but subtracting a star for making me listen to nothing for a minute and half at the top of the record.

I’m certain this was creating a lot of genre tropes and not copying them. But even still this feels like a deeply commercial venture that lacks artistic substance. It’s not bad to listen to, but it’s also not good.

never really got into kiss but i do like detroit rock city

Kiss is always fun. I think I've never listened to a full album. 3.5

This was my first enlistment in the possible Knight in Satan's Service army. It was ok. Not my cuppa but two really good tracks in there. Top tracks: "Beth," "Detroit Rock City"

Final thoughts: I don't like Kiss, but I think I get it. If you want the full Kiss entree, you have to buy a ticket to the show. Can't make it to the show? Here's an album with slick production that will give you a general idea of what they're all about; a decent tuna melt made by the nearby greasy spoon. Also, there's no Gwar without Kiss. That's worth something. ******************************************************************************* --Detroit Rock City...after a minute of nonsense the song starts. it's fine. the guitar solo at the end is lame --King of the Night Time World...good lord these lyrics --God of Thunder...Sounds like Gene is singing this one. I do not like Gene's voice --Great Expectations...not a fan at all. what is this? terrible lyrics. is that a children's choir?! Turned into a so-bad-it's-good situation for me by the end --Flaming Youth...simple and stupid but in a good way --Sweet Pain...The Gene songs just don't do it for me. --Shout It Out Loud...this is fun. feels like the entire band is on their game here --Beth...did Kiss fans ask for this? is this a beloved Kiss track? Does every album need a ballad? When they play this song in concert is Gene still sticking his tongue out the entire time? --Do You Love Me...no --Rock 'N' Roll Party...uh

Big dumb rock!

Not bad. Simpsons: Yes

Was expecting more from this. Best track on here was Beth.

Was alright. I love detroit rock city

I've never been much of a KISS fan, but it's hard to deny that they were very good at doing just what they aimed to do.

6/10 Fun enough. 9-9-2025

Detroit Rock City on varmaan Kissin paras kappale, muut tällä levyllä ihan ok tasoa. Shout It Out Loud toki myös tuttu ja ihan hyvä. Aika mahtipontisia ja tosi positiivisen kuuloisia biisejä. Parhaat: Detroit Rock City, Shout It Out Loud

Not half-bad.

Cock rock for your parents. They wasted Satanic Panic on “Knights in Satan’s Service” with some of the most mild “rock” - honestly, I think the songs I know? Are mostly from covers that sound better than KISS’s own work. And Gene Simmons is a wanker. They get a 3 for being “iconic” in their era, but meh.

Detroit Rock City is an all-time banger. The rest is enjoyable inoffensive glam rock.

very cheesy pop rock, saved by Shout It Out Loud

Good rock I guess

2.5 stars. Cock rock that is probably more fun live in a big arena. Not into power ballads ("Beth"), but first couple tracks ("Detroit Rock City" and "King Of The Night Time World") are OK.

Musically it wasn’t bad but lyrically it was a bit juvenile for my tastes. The certainly had some bangers like Detroit rock city but there were a few misses on this album.

50 years ago I wasn’t a Kiss fan. One year later I was member of the KISS Army because of this album. Then a few years later went AWOL.

I’m not saying it was the best thing I’ve ever listened to, but it definitely doesn’t deserve so many one star ratings (in my opinion). Just another boy band. Type of songs I wouldn’t skip if they were on the radio.

It was alright, had a few decent tracks

Another one about Dennis. I don't understand why. He and Beth had split up which seems like an impossibility and I was riding with her to a famous resteraunt in Louisville. I don't remember much of what he said but I could tell he was holding in that I was there with her. He was the master at keeping all feelings low key. You could tell if he wanted something or someone (well I could) but you'd really have to know his behavior. So he was doing his thing, making jokes, seemed drunk but kept talking about coke. He kept saying it was there but I never saw it. Son was there and as usual she seemed like she was trying to manipulate late the situation. Everyone except me was waiting to dance and eventually they opened the dance floor to a sea of faces that I can still see faintly and though I recognized none it is strange how your brain may remember a stranger. Dennis disappeared briefly. I found him eating off other people's plates. Then Everyone started leaving and I couldn't find anyone and when I did I said to Dennis 'I thought you were going to leave without me' he replied 'you used that same line to make people feel bad' then started laughing and looked at this guy Terry and said remember..' he mumbled something I can't remember then started talking to me and said 'Daredevil'.

Classic stuff. Never was a Kiss fan, but a few good songs on this album.

Disco muy entretenido, se te hace corto. 7/10

Detroit Rock City // Beth // 3.5/5

pretty good and some meh

Fun but fairly generic 70s rock.

I enjoyed this more than I thought although after the first few tracks things fizzled out. We want that drama coming from KISS.

This album is a high-3 for me. I like the first two tracks: "Detroit Rock City" (what an anthem) and "King of the Nighttime World". I also kind of like the ballad "Beth".

The cultural legacy of Kiss fascinates me. They're one of the best-selling bands of all time, influential to an unquantifiable number of other musicians, and revolutionized practices like concert tours and merchandise sales to become a commercial behemoth of a recognizable brand with die-hard fans and collectors around the world, and yet their actual music doesn't seem to be that iconic. Like, I'd probably only heard two Kiss songs I could name before this album. That's not usually the case with bands like this. I feel that, in recent years, people have started to think more critically about... well, music in general, but bands like Kiss especially and have started being more negative with them. I kind of get it, but I can also see the other side of the coin. On one hand, Kiss was doing things that no other band dared to do at the time. While I never went to one of their shows, I've heard that they were apparently a great live band, especially for the time. I have to give some respect to this band and their influence. But on the other hand, Gene Simmons is an asshat, consumerism is bad, and the music of Kiss is just kind of okay. Destroyer is not a bad album, but it's not exactly great either. The songs are somewhat catchy and have solid riffs. "Detroit Rock City" is probably the highlight. The actual music talent is certainly there, but not mind-blowing. The writing doesn't do it for me. I'm sure it's fun to hear songs that are basically just "let's party, guys!" at a live show, but it doesn't do much for me right now. Feels kind of shallow, you know? But who am I to judge? Not every album needs to be Pet Sounds. Sometimes albums can just be a fun collection of songs that you can enjoy. That's what Destroyer is. While I'm not huge on it myself, I feel it would be wrong for me to say that Kiss sucked and always did suck and never deserved any success. Gene Simmons can suck a dick though. The album's a 3/5.

It’s ok. Encouraging in a strange way… the songs are about dying in a car crash? But it just sounds so exciting and motivational. If I don’t pay attention to the lyrics, it will have given me a “oh yehhh letsss gooooooooo” vibe..

More variety than I would have expected from a Kiss album. I think it’s fair to know them just by their more electric songs a la AC/DC where every 3rd song has “Rock” or Lightning/Thunder” in the title. Wasn’t blown away but still cool to hear what they’re like before they do their morning cocaine or whatever.

Good overall , but now thinking back I can’t remember anything that particularly stuck out.
