Album Summary
Very is the fifth studio album by English synth-pop duo Pet Shop Boys, released on 27 September 1993 by Parlophone, nearly three years after the duo's previous studio album, Behaviour, and following the compilation album Discography: The Complete Singles Collection. Very exhibits one of many turning points the Pet Shop Boys would make to their music, shifting from the subdued electronic pop of Behaviour to richly instrumented dance arrangements. The content and lyrics led to Very being called their "coming-out" album, since it was during this time that Neil Tennant had publicly discussed his long-rumoured homosexuality.

2/5 - I don't mind their hits much, but I just can't do a whole album of PSB. Monotonous beats, same vocal tone, same synth, song after song.
The best way I can explain this album is that it’s the Pet Shop Boys trying to sound like the Pet Shop Boys. Sure it was them. But everything felt a bit generic.
With so much at their disposal, why did they choose a garbage horn voice so often??
There's a very distinctive sound to PSB, and while ElectroDiscoPop is not really my thing, the whole album passed the time pleasantly, but left me with no real desire to press Repeat.
Very boring. Monotone cheesy "ironic' twaddle. Can you forgive her is a good song but thats it
I don’t like synth pop. I think I could possibly enjoy this album if it was played with real strings, real drums, bass, guitars, etc. Unfortunately, most of the pop electronic music produced in the 80’s/90’s sounds soulless to me. “Go West” is laughable.
A bit cringeworthy production, the embracing of more dance and club culture hasn’t aged this well compared to their poppier stylings on other albums. No really great songs to showcase what they can do and it all felt a little too europop to me which put me off considerably.
okay
i remember the cd case for this being cool but i'm not a pet shop boys fan
Couldn’t make myself finish it
I did not enjoy this. Not an offensive listen, but not my bag. None of it hit for me and it felt like it was an 8 hour album. 1 star.
hate the pet shop boys
Mediocre eletronic pop
I feel like PSB is the definitive example of 80’s Synth-pop
It’s ok, doesn’t do much for me.
I might have given this more of a shot if it wasn't on the heels of Frankie Goes to Hollywood.
I'm not sure I realized how many singles came off this album. There were a lot. I had friends that loved this record so I've listened to it a few times before, but probably not for 25 years or so. It's not really my thing but I appreciate that they have a distinct sound and know their way around pop hooks.
Not my style. But I can see the hype around it.
Gay disco
It was okay! Good for waking up to. Top bops: Yesterday when I was mad
Repetitive and boring Standout song The Theater
Pet shop boys album that sounds like pet shop boys music. No bangers other than Go West song but overall good songs.
abuelaaa lalalalala
overflow from the 80's? oh goodness
Melancholic dance/pop - standout track is "I Wouldn't Normally Do This Kind Of Thing"
Another band that’s been in my periphery for a long time and I’m ecstatic to finally have been forced by algorithm to take a look. It’s beautiful ear candy. It’s so boldly queer with all the joy-in-spite-of-it-all that brings. I love everything about this.
Europop Klarer ikke helt å like vokalisten assa. Ja dette var båring.
boring.
pet shop boys!
Brains are weird. On another day I feel like I would hate this; it's not my typical jam at all. At least for today, though, I kinda liked it. 3.5
I really like the Pet Shop Boys, but haven't dived deeply into their catalog. Excited! This is already great!
Never really liked Pet Shop Boys. Meh.
Hated this at the time. But now beginning to appreciate its finer qualities.
7/10
Quite fun. 3.5/5
esta bien pero medio monotono. 2,5
Awesome synthpop, a high point of the soundtrack to the 80's. Great programming when most others were just playing funny melody lines on Casios for the novelty.
My sister loves Pet Shop Boys, and I never have. Compared to what I've had to listen to lately though this is way better. I recognized some songs, but didn't really know any of them.
This is the upbeat shit I begged for over the past week. Well done generator!
6/10 No es malo, pero meh. Medio fofo.
Suunnilleen samaa tasoa kuin aiempi kuuntelemani Pet Shop Boys-levy Actually. Tästä vain puuttui It's A Sinin ja What Have I Done to Deserve Thisin? kaltaiset huippubiisit. Ihan kiva levy.
There are some good melodies here and there, but alas, it is too British sounding for my taste
Very bad
I absolutely love the opening track of this album. Anyone who can craft the words ‘cricket pavilion’ into a song, and still sound awesome, has some song writing chops. How nice are those 80s synths?!!
Pet Shop Boys are so hit and miss for me! This was mostly a miss sadly, but Go West and Absolutely Fabulous (on the extended version I was listening to) have a special place still :)
I struggle to get into the head of the people (as there are clearly many) who listen to this clean, camp, crispy synth pop and get excited about it. I'm going to stretch to a two star review here as the 80s production from the previous PSB albums has been replaced by beefier, more tolerable 90s basslines. But I'll still actively avoid ever listening to it again.
I was really expecting something awful. But the album was okay. It was actually kind of nice to hear a few of those old sappy songs again. But I've had enough of it for the next few days, weeks, years. 3/5
If I was a gay man in the 90s then this would be right up my alley, but alas I am not. 4/10 Top song... Go west
Repeat Listen.
Super fun synth-pop album. Have always enjoyed the Pet Shop Boys so this was easy listening. Liberation was my fav song and first listen. I Wouldn't Normally Do This Kind of Thing and The Theatre were my other highlights
I didn’t mind it. There are some decent enough pop songs on here but I do find that their production is quite dated. Compared to some of their other works, the songs on this album are quite simplistic.
uma vibe muito boa, vou ouvir mais
It’s alright
3.2
The lyrics are great. The sound is a little samey. Bookended by great tracks - 'Go West' adds a bit of disappointment, as it shows something a little unhinged thst would have been great across the album as a whole.
Always preferred the music to the vocal. Catchy enough and there are certainly some tunes that troubled the charts in here (5 top 15 singles) and rightly so.
pffffff it has its moments but I wanted itto be over
Obviously Go West is a masterpiece and I also enjoyed Yesterday When I Was Mad and The Theatre. Overall though it just didn’t grab me.
This was great. I really enjoyed the production, and the lyrics. All in all, just a really good album.
I liked this, but not my favourite pet shop boys album. I was surprised at how new it sounded. It sounded more 2000s than early 90s. I just wish it was a bit more ballsy like their other albums, I just felt it lacked umpf. Still an enjoyable album
This was good, not many songs I was aware of which was a surprise. Probably not my favourite cut of their output but enjoyable listening nonetheless.
The Pet Shop Boys have some great tunes, some good tunes and quite a lot of average ones. Their greatest hits would get a 5 from me. This album is a high 3.
Nice enough but lightweight and unmemorable pop
Enjoyed this a lot, super catchy and really nice vocals and melodies
1.25
Every song sounds the same, with a different melody. Which wouldn't be all that bad if I liked it. 2/5
When I die and am in purgatory, I hope I am forced to listen to this instead of Kanye West.
Very bright synth pop. Catchy but a bit too shiny in places for me.
The Credits as written on the packaging * Mark Farrow – graphic design * Pet Shop Boys – graphic design * Chris Nash – photographs * David Fielding – costume and set design * Pentagram – Lego case CD packaging, concept, design - Daniel Weil Mark Farrow won a D&AD award for one of his Pet Shop Boys sleeves. Not this one. I remember when this came out, and we all gasped at how outrageous it was as a sleeve. Didn't buy one as the music is hideous.

I can appreciate that these guys were pioneers in edm, but that doesn’t mean I have to like them.
Decent. Thought it would be disco hell. It had dancey stuff but other stuff too.
This is like a 2.94 as the community rates it -- almost a 3 for me but it does feel repetitive towards the end
o law!
Absolute slop. Anyone who enjoys this please go fuck yourself. This is what ai would create if I told it to make synth music
I was initially like oh Jesus more British pop BS. And then I was bopping my head along and enjoying myself. Don’t get me wrong it’s nothing particularly revolutionary or inspirational, but it’s fun. I’d give it a 2.5 but I’m rounding up to a 3 here because it seems gay. Update just read more about it- definitely gay. Love it.
pusa dečkima iz dućana za kućne ljubimce. poznati su mi otprije po numerama »it's a sin« i (obradi) »always on my mind«, s ovog albuma znao sam pjesmu »go west«, koja mi i nije nešto. rekao sam ovo valjda po hiljade puta u ovim osvrtima, ali fali mi ovdje ono nešto za više od trojke, premda mi se načelno dopalo. možda mi je najbolja pjesma prva (»can you forgive her?«), a nije prosječna ni »yesterday, when i was mad«
Some bad, some good songs.
It’s a bit shite.
Liked.
First time listening to an album by the Pet Shop Boys - always thought of them as a singles band. The good news is that the songs you don’t know sound like the ones you do.
This was never my jam, but I always thought Pet Shop Boys made sturdy, pretty club tunes that weren't pure formula, with lyrical wit and great melodies. This album starts out pretty great, actually. The second half gets a little Night at the Roxbury. Still, that's anachronistic, a function of the derivative and dull acts that stole a formula and flogged it in the second half of the 90s. Can almost give this 4 stars... but, 3/5. It might belong on the list because its definitely representative of music at the time (one genre of it, anyway), and probably a top-notch version of the genre. But that's a judgment that I'll reserve until reviewing their two other albums on the list.
My first Metalica album. I love this record so much. Never was really into this type of music, but this record changed my opinion.
Tennants vocals carry this Album at times although I do have a soft spot for the PSB this isn't the best. Some nice tracks but feels like a phone it in job.
Okay, now this algorithm is just reading my mind. Before listening yesterday, I saw it was Tom Tom Club, but didn't listen right away. So, before I listened, I was thinking "wait, is it Pet Shop Boys today? No, no, it's Tom Tom Club. Or--" and repeat until I listened to the damn thing. So this is freaking me out a bit. This was my first time listening to them on my own, and it clicked immediately. I had to put on Please right afterwards. They will be in rotation for a bit, most likely.
Coming in as a surprise to no-one... I hate this.
To be honest I really see the vision and the album is enjoyable to listen to.
This album was pretty chill. reminds me of a weird late night tv infomercial or some bikini show i was trying to hide back then. Wouldn't listen to it again tho.
Synth pop rarely does it for me… and this is not the exception. Sorry pet shop boys… 2.2.
Nothing like I expected. I think my brain was conflating Pet Shop Boys with the Beastie Boys. 🤣 I found this quite pleasant to listen to, but it didn’t stay with me much. 7/10 Quite Likeable
I'm not terribly familiar with this band, but I found this album to be elegant, polished, and often quite catchy; some tracks sound like Belle & Sebastian remixed for a 90s club. Not especially fond of "Go West"; my patience for Pachelbel's Canon and works riffing on it was exhausted 10-15 years ago. Perhaps I would feel differently if I was more familiar with the original.
