Appreciate the significance, but sounds a bit basic to 2025 ears. 2.49 stars rounded back down to a flat deuce
Love. Is the family name Touré as common in West Africa as Johnson in Rock Ridge? Watch the 2015 doc They Will Have To Kill Us First
Duke's a legend--greatest American composer. The album is a classic. But this is Intro to Introductory Jazz Pre-101. I've moved on, gimme that hard stuff. Is Money Jungle in this 1,001? That's the Duke for me
I have no conscious memory of hearing this album or band before. I did however come in with strong preconceived notions based entirely on my interpretation of their fans & associated acts. The first 1/3 of the album had me thinking "oh shit I've misjudged, there's def sthg here I'm digging." The next third brought me to "ok already, jesus christ get on with it." As the final third drew to a close I had arrived at "thank fuck that's over. At least it's off the To Do list."
+2 stars because a lot of the music is quite intriguing and even homeboy's vocals at points work really well.
-3 stars because holy shit bro, I understand the knob goes to 11 but what if we try a 5 or 6
What I knew coming in: 1)This guy is supposedly great & I’m vaguely familiar with a song or three. 2) I sometimes confuse him with a similarly named but distinctly sounding artist that’s also been on my deep dive list for years.
Review: Absolutely brilliant. I fkng love this album and as a matter of fact Im bout to celebrate the *whole catalog*. The proverbial tragic artist with a legacy of masterpieces. Just an incredible talent.
4 & 3/4 stars because it’s fkn great & nobody’s perfect. But that rounds right up to 5
Is that it? Isn't this a classic album from a hugely influential group that's on countless recommended lists? Maybe I missed it.
No, I don't think so... Is there sthg special here? Sounds like a whole bunch of ordinary. Perhaps this is not the album I am looking for...
+2.5 stars for a roundly average album. +.5 stars because I know they have other good stuff.
-2 stars because Zzzzz...
Nine trizzay’s the yizzear for me to fuck up shiiit.
An absolute classic. If it’s not the #1 most listened hip hop album in my history then it’s #2. Timeless? No, not really. But it was massive at exactly the right time.
Shoutout to Mr. Buttworth the substitute teacher encouraging children’s dreams
Oh hey, famous dad. I mean, it's alright. Seems fine enough. Nothing remarkable. A solid 2.5 stars. And we're gonna round DOWN for nepotism
I knew coming in that the god awful 80s synth sounds would be coming fast & furious with this one. And I was not disappointed (in that prediction. I very much WAS disappointed to have to listen to all that horrible garbage.) Apart from that synth pop silliness there's some really good shit in here. Honestly, there's some bangers that could earn their way into my regular rotation. If I had the time and patience to acclimate to the neon plastic sheen of 80's production sounds that is. Buuuuuuut I don't. Maybe it'll happen organically.
So many covers for a non-covers album! How bout that Springsteen, huh? That was fun.
+3 stars for a solidly better-than-average effort.
I'm to understand this is proto-glam rock?
First thought: *sigh* If only you had been strangled in the crib... Thing is tho, it's proto-. Early stages, still developing, & the bones are not terrible. That's the problem with strangling babies. They're babies! So cute & sweet. And they grab your pinky with their entire little hand and the little fingernails are so impossibly adorable. Even when you know they will grow up and unleash a plague on society, it's difficult to follow thru. I mean, it's not *difficult.* Probably one of the easiest strangulations most people will encounter in a lifetime. But *emotionally* I mean. *Morally* difficult.
ANYway... Obviously it's nowhere near the worst excesses of the glam era. And there are certainly bits and pieces that are, at the very least, enjoyable. But it's iust so goddamned much. *A* song or three is great in a dirty strip club mixed in with some other god-awful lowest common denominator top 40 slop. But an *entire album* STRAIGHT THRU?!?!! Couldn't do it.
It's a 1-star from me, but tack on an honorary star for trailblazing in the intentional misspellings space. (Oh gtfo myface with the beatles--that was one thing & a clever pun. These cats are capitalizing on each &every opportunity to trick things up for apparently no reason other than they love chaos. Shoutout the OG *Cum on Feel tha Noize* AND a double high five for being significant/influential in their scene. But still. Point-83 stars, rounded up to 1.
This is just the kick in the pants that I needed to FINALLY check out this artist. Here's the thing: the *most* contemporary hip hop I listen to is roundabout 20 years old by now. And so that's a lot of years of evolution of sound & production & style & what-have-yous. So I was a tad bit trepidatious about not being able to get past that surface level. Also, popular appeal is generally an indicator that I'm not gonna like it. But the reputation cannot be ignored. And the accolades, in numbers & prestige, demand attention.
Review: This is fukkn brilliant. MAXIMUM STARS!! And this *ain't* the Pulitzer album?? My concern re: the new-fangled sound & style of the kids today was not completely unfounded. But that's my issue to overcome & it is quickly dissipating with every spin. Plus *everything else* is so fukkn incredible that it's easily overcome. I've had this muhffker on repeat thru the weekend & i plan to take a break only so I can rate the next album in my journey. But you can bet I'm coming straight back to this one & it's going straight into the regular rotation. Cannot WAIT to continue this man's discography.
FIVE STARS PLUS!! And gonna add an asterisk to differentiate it from other "regular" 5-star albums because this is a level above
Few albums bigger than this one in middle/high school. Was not into it then, but I'm onboard now. Legend for a reason; here's reason #1.
Brilliant. Love. This is his first. Don’t know if it’s better/worse than the next one, which was first to reach my ear holes. It will take another 2 dozen spins of each before I can begin to get so granular. But here’s the thing: every single one of those listens will be an absolute pleasure.
4 Stars. Thank you for your attention to this matter
YESSIR!! I guess I was unfamiliar with this portion of the right honorable gentleman’s game. I AM aware, & indeed quite fond, of what this man will be throwing down a few years in the future. But this was a lovely surprise & no longer will I overlook the straight ahead jazz propers of his arsenal.
Fuck Phil Spector’s abusive murdering ass. And I ain’t interested in Xmas music either. Love & respect to the lovely Ronnie Spector & the other artists that had to work with that sack of shit. A sympathy star for the artists involved, negative 10 for Phil.
It was around the time of this release, give or take, that I fell out with this artist when I heard he was a Scientologist. I was soo disheartened & couldn't even listen to any of his work without the sad, icky feeling of disappointment overshadowing my whole listening experience. This cat is uniquely talented & borders upon greatness. And it's MY irrational hang-up that robbed me of a decade plus of fandom. I DID eventually outgrow my foolishness (on this particular issue anyway) and came back to unashamedly appreciating this man's distinctive output over the last handful of years or so. THIS album, while not my favorite, is not bad & I imagine I would come to enjoy it even more with repeated listens.
3 stars seems about right. Honorable mention to the Futurama cameo back in the Midnite Vultures days
I wanna say this is overrated. That could just be bc it was so insanely huge & played a zillion times tho. There’s no denying the popularity, significance, or impact in its time. Listening now brings a similar sense of mild cringing embarrassment as thinking about my own early adulthood. And I don’t think that’s *only* bc they overlap. It was cool AF at the time, but now probably best left to memories—be they fond or cringe.
I cannot stress enough just how 5stars this album was in the early aughts. In damn-near-2026 I’mma dial that back to about 3. Plus a 1/2 star bc 3 seems low for an album of such significance. But then we’re gonna round back down bc I think I may prefer the SSLP
I don’t get why this cat became the standard bearer for electric blues guitarists. He doesn’t strike me as particularly unique or interesting. I mean, he’s fine. He sounds like generic default blues for background music or production value. Or maybe he sounds generic bc he IS the standard bearer & his sound set the bar. Either way I think there’s plenty that do it better & this album is… fine. We’ll call it exactly average.
2 & 1/2 stars. Because the tyrannical powers that be don’t allow half stars we shall round down bc nothing stands out to me as noteworthy or memorable. It’s fine tho.
I don't particularly enjoy it, at least not a full album's worth all at once. But there's no denying this is a fukkn classic. Honestly I wanted to speed thru and give it a bad review, but there's so goddamned much here that I can't. Not in good faith anyway. Was this their peak? I don't know, I'm honestly asking. If it wasn't it has to be damn close. It is what it is. And for what it is, there ain't much better. I hope the listen won't fuck my algorithm, but I gotta admit it was fun.
Hell yes!! This is a fantabulous funky Brazilian dance party is what this is. And you can bet your ass that I’m boogie-ing mine to exhaustion. New favorite Hermes Trismegistus song, that’s for sure. (Don’t ask which it replaced.) That fkn cuica too. I love that thing. This is exactly what I hoped for in beginning this project: discover great new-to-me artists that I might otherwise have never encountered. Cannot wait to continue this man’s discography
I def had 5stars of fun with this one, but I’m hesitant to pull the trigger on the full 5 overall. I love it, but is it truly great among its peers? I’m afraid I won’t know that without a lot more listening. I’mma have fkn fun doing it tho. Official rating is 4.5 stars. You know what? Let’s nudge that over to 4.51, which rounds nicely up to 5
I was on this one from the beginning—Love it. Don’t know if it’s my fave of theirs, but there’s plenty here. Plus turned me onto Holly Golightly. Good for JDub & his kids & grandkids & probably generations after that on the success of that one song. But as a fan it’s a bummer when a cool tune blows up so huge that it’s played ad infinitum & “ruined” for we hep cats that were onboard from the beginning. Much love & well wishes to the great MDub as well. Hope she’s living her best
Of course I already knew the one song. That one that’s universally mandated to be the first song every guitar student learns. Based almost entirely on that song alone I decided long ago that a deeper dive into this group’s catalog was not necessary. Having now listened to *this* album (which does not include *that* song) I stand by my decision.
It’s fine. In fact if I had taken that deeper dive way back when, I likely would have quite enjoyed it. They absolutely fit the mold of what I was into back then & in no way are they any worse than any of the others I was into. There were absolutely parts where I thought “ok, this is not bad.” Those vocals tho—I’m out.
2stars plus a tip of the cap for being significant & influential in their scene.
I trust that this is great because so many people that I think are great say this is great. There’s a handful of tracks I dig. But “modern” R&B is just not my bag. It all sounds like it’s slumped into an overstuffed couch on muscle relaxers and Valium. Lyrically excellent. Thematically excellent. Musically… it can’t be anything but excellent! Pino P, Questlove, Roy Hargrove, Roy Ayers, Jack DeJohnette. I cannot & do not deny its greatness. It just doesn’t move me. Keep your Neo-Soul, I’ll take the original.
**EDIT: After a couple days reflection, I want to note: MARK THOSE WORDS. It occurs to me that I have had near identical reviews of artists that are now on my Rushmore &or dearly beloved. That is, smart, sophisticated, deep, made by brilliant musicians & uniquely talented writers/producers. “It just doesn’t click with me…” *insert Homer Simpson meme* “…doesn’t click with you SO FAR.”
Punk rock saxophone? FUHHK YES. This is fun as hell. Interesting group/story too. Burn bright for a short time & then off to other projects. Each of the principals went their own way & I def plan to give each a spin or three.
We’re gonna say 3 & 1/4 stars, round that thing back down to 3, & pour one out for Poly
I came upon this album organically maybe a couple years ago. Love. Not sthg I listen to often, but it’s absolutely sthg to throw into the random mix. To my limited understanding this came up towards the tail end (& relative fringe) of the krautrock scene/era that I studied over the last couple-three years.
Rating this one’s a curious predicament. I don’t think it’s “fair” to try & position it on the same overall rating scale that I use to judge sthg vastly sonically different (re: traditional, melodic, “pretty.”) So I want to consider it more in its own context. I think, that in their corner of the music universe, this album must be about a 7 or 8 out of 5. But also my experience with this particular corner is so limited that I want to allow space for those unknown unknowns. Then again, what in holy hell could possibly surpass it?
Final judgement: 4&1/2 stars plus an asterisk noting it’s qualified transcendence
I have been out on this album from the very beginning. This had to be the beginning of pop-punk, right? Father to all the "Word-dash-Number" bands of the early aughts. This album came out when I was 14 & it was very popular among my peers (& non-peers). I was chasing a much heavier dragon in those days & this faux punk rock was for dweebs, or so I believed at the time. I wouldn't familiarize myself with proper punk rock until several years later at which time I confirmed my hypothesis that pop-punk was garbage & I need not waste my time.
Thing is, these boys have undeniable staying power & critical accolades to suggest I am missing sthg. And so I do solemnly swear & publicly pronounce that I will give an honest & sincere effort to provide a fair & unbiased review of whatever else comes up on the list. Whatever it is that I'm missing tho, it ain't on this album
One of the best, from one of the greatest.
One of the greats from one of the greatest.
Nope. Sounds to me like utterly ordinary & forgettable punk rock. Lyrics are smart & entertaining. Song/album titles great. Band name cool too. Musically tho… let’s try a different direction
KK is a beast. This is not his best imho, but even so it’s better than most. Curious to see what else has made the list
These are the roots that made these guys great. They did catch a bit of the 80s synth flu for a little while which hurts their reputation in my mind. But this is the good stuff. 3.5 stars, round up for badassery
fkn Creedence. Hell yeah. Ask The Dude. 3.5 stars, round up for the absurdity of JF being sued for plagiarizing himself
PIPES!! Man’s got pipes. Bit of same-song too tho. I did not find this album matched its reputation. Dos estrellas
Love the group, love Stax, this album is far from their best. This reads to me like a generic audition tape to demonstrate competency or a general sampler platter for the uninitiated. Great introduction, now let’s take the training wheels off…
Imma say 2-point-5. Rounded up bc I know what they’re capable of
This is a group with several great tunes that you really love for a month or three and then never need to hear again. And also you feel shame for liking them in the first place. And also you realize that all of their songs are the same song.
R u fkn kidding me? The integrity of this entire project has now been called into question. In no way, shape, or form should *ANY* “nu-metal” be considered must-listen under any circumstances. Maybe in the International Criminal Court in The Hague. Possibly another special circumstance like that. Otherwise, just no. And I say this as someone who was onboard for the birth & infancy of this virus. I do not hide my guilt, I stand up as a cautionary tale. Adolescent hormones can lead to irrational decisions and some of those decisions come with lifetime consequences.
This group to me is like training wheels on your rock&roll bicycle. They were integral in the early stages & I really dug them for a long while. But eventually I took them off & threw them in a corner of the garage & rarely thought about them since. Aside from a small handful of exceptions I’ve really had no use nor patience for them.
And so I approached this album with a little annoyance & impatience and a sprinkling of pleasant nostalgia. What fun it was tho!! Surpassed my expectations. I had a great time with this relisten. And gee-damn this album is packed! 4stars
This has got to be the ultimate success story of tragedy claims kick-ass frontman who is then replaced by badass frontman & the group carries on to great success. This group does one thing & they do it well. I’m going with 3&1/2, but the tricky part is which way to go from there. Def seems like a flat 3 is too low, but I don’t think this is their best album so a 4 seems a little high. Fuhgit. High energy hard rockin gets the push. Four it is
Well well well. I know *about* this crew. I know the origin story. And I found that famous album from their previous iteration to be an absolute chore to even finish. I was not enthusiastic about this record & was not expecting much. And I found those expectations to be completely unfounded. This was not bad at all & in fact was pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty good. That geedee 80s synth sheen is such a turn off & drags the whole thing down. But not so much as to ruin the experience. Low-Life, good times. Tres estrellas
My interest was piqued. I knew by name & several of the players in & around & adjacent to the scene & indeed am a big fan of some of it. I found this album to be utterly unremarkable & completely forgettable. It missed my expectations to such a degree that I think maybe the experiment was tainted somehow & I’m gonna have to put this in the “Try again later“ pile. As is, we’re going deuce
Man’s a legend. This album… bit of a snoozer. 2 & 1/2. We’ll round it up to 3 out of respect for overall output
Dig the dirty distorted garage sound. Some tunes are cool. Fairly or (more likely) unfairly, my feelings for this group were influenced by a supposed feud with another chap whose side I took. And so my take is likely biased. Still pretty cool tho. We'll go with 3
Dig. Enjoyed reading about this cat's impact & influence as well. Think I'll need to dive a bit deeper to appreciate much of that, but this is a strong to quite strong debut effort & I do not doubt he's got the chops to take it much further. I'mma say three & a quarter.
Few albums meant more to me thru my teens. I know they had the one before this one. But *this* album was a whole new level (with the song to prove it.) And the NEXT one took things even further & cemented these boys as the greatest ever in my mind. Which was a position I held for many years. Roughly until my hormones leveled out & I didn't need so much loud angry shit to rage to. It was a fun listen and sure as shit I still knew every word. Four stars!
This is gd brilliant, 5stars! 5stars plus a hearty round of applause.
W/o looking it up, my understanding is these are CA hippies with poor judgement regarding drugs and they briefly recorded at a very high level. *And* there's a true crime element! I look fwd to reading more. & of course listening much, much more
Absofknlutely not. Coldplay is U2 with half the artistic merit. Mass appeal, lowest common denominator drivel
What can I say that hasn't been said? I'm putting it in the high 4's, but we're gonna round that down for all the... you know.
There’s sthg here & I’m certain a deeper dive would be worthwhile & increase my appreciation for the band & their work. That said I felt like I was watching every Irish gangster movie montage on a loop for an hour. I don’t doubt these cats were original in their day, but all these years later they’ve been appropriated & turned into a cliche. Or that’s my initial impression anyway. 3 stars
Much love & respect to the incredible Ms.Day; a bad bee if ever there was one. I salute her stature, her contributions, and her output. Such a distinctive voice. This is an incredible record & a great listen in the right circumstance. I don't find myself in that circumstance often tho. I'm generally looking to crank this party up, not slow things down. And so we're gonna put this’un at a 3
Ok. Interesting. It's not terrible. And I'm intrigued by the reputation & supposed influence. Dig. 3 stars
Good stuff. This was a good deal prior to my jumping onboard with these cats & back then I did not go thru the back catalog as a matter of course. Apart from the hits I had not heard much of this, but I liked a bit of it even more than said hits. Likely some hit-fatigue involved tho. I'm going with 3 point 3 repeating.
I guess it was better than I expected.
I like it *at least* 4 stars worth. But considering the depth of this man's overall output, I'm not sure I can go all the way to 4 with this one. On the other hand, 3 definitely sounds low. Matter of fact, I'd say 3&1/2 is a smidge low. I'm really talking myself into it here. Final judgement is gonna be 3-point-77. And by the power of mathematics that'll round up to 4
I knew absolutely nothing about this group except that the older cool kids were into them. Consequently I wished I was into them and may have represented myself as such. Having now *actually* listened to them I am prepared to make a judgement. In the age-old dichotomy of taking or leaving, I'm gonna go ahead & leave it
Love. This man's an incredible talent. Love his voice, love his range, love his songwriting. And he does a lot of things. I'm not into all of it, but the bits I do like are fantastic.
I believe this may have been the first straight ahead jazz record I ever owned. I knew absolutely nothing at the time except that this was an important artist. *Cool* was definitely not what I was looking for at the time, but as I gained my footing and got a sense of the different styles & subgenres I came back around to appreciate (& relish!) this album & many of its direct offspring. Miles is on my Rushmore. I’ve got to go *at least* a 4.5, but even with all my appreciation this is not my favorite Miles so we’re gonna round that back down to a flat 4
This one’s better than his next one. There’s a lot that I liked. And it’s reminiscent of some stuff I *really like.* But it’s also “plain.” It doesn’t go anywhere. Or at least not where I’d like it to go. It’s like a race car with a governor. It revs up & takes off great, but then it hits the cruise control at 80% top speed. I’mma say 3 & 1/2. I’m gonna allow the round up to 4 but with a bold asterisk to note this is a qualified genre-specific scale
In. Like it. They're very good & have a large catalog to explore. As with most a cappella tho, it's a lot. This is tasteful & soulful & interesting. But okay already. How about a tight EP rather than a whole entire LP? Still tho it is quite good. Definitely worthy to throw into the random mix.
Incredible group. My man's got one of the greatest voices in all of music history. And I am counting all the way back thru the stone age. Punk ass caveman Zog's got nothing on my boy Freddie Pipes. It's hard to say about the album tho. While the band is great they've always been a compilation group to me. I never went methodically thru the albums on their own. So, I don't know... it's good. Call it 3 & 3/4? Rounded up to 4.
This was a sleeper for me. It came out only a few months after its predecessor. And *that* one cast a huuuge shadow. And then came the next, and the one after that, and so it was years before I came back around to appreciate the brilliance of this one. I love every bit of this album. I love every bit of the ones before it and every bit of the ones after it. It's hard for me to think of what I can say about this one that doesn't also describe my feelings for nearly every other one. It's got the most lovely and welcome earworms. I can set it on repeat for days on end. Each track has been my favorite at one time or another. I can put it down for months or years and come back to fall in love all over again.
We're gonna have to break out the specialty qualified scale again because this is a tier above. I think I'm gonna give it a 4.9, but that's only in relation to its direct siblings. In the context of the 1001 I'm scoring a bold 5 with multiple exclamation points
"I hate the fkn Eagles man." I feel it's become somewhat of a meme to hate on the Eagles. I like to think I was hatin' on 'em long before it became fashionable. Not really tho. Not *hating*. More like "annoyed by." I mean, they're fine. That greatest hits album is surely one of the better greatest hits albums in the history of greatest hits albums, supposedly. Truth be told, I checked it out from the public library in 1994 and quite enjoyed it for an entire week. I've had little use for them since. & this ain't even the greatest hits. Banjo was way too low in the mix. Except on Earlybird, which I dug. 2stars
ABso-LUTELY!! This is what I'm fkn talkn bout. Love Jimmy, love the Chicken Shack. Kenny B is fantastic as always. Mister Stanley T showing who's boss. I discovered Jimmy Smith back when I was first getting into jazz & didn't yet know the lay of the land. I was just blindly scooping up handfuls with little understanding of the breadth of the spectrum. This record was directly in line with exactly what brung me & it was love at first listen.
Here's another artist that is held in very high regard by many whose opinions I trust. I've understood that I should check him out & has been on my deep dive list for years. I've heard a half-a-handful of songs no more than thrice each, some only once. And yet I just never got around to it. So here we go, finally.
They were right. I love it! This is great. I'm not normally a poetry of lyrics appreciator, but this was a delight. The range of musical styles is fantastic. I suspect there's at least one more album on this list & I hope it's more than that. I'm not waiting around for it tho, I'm starting my deep dive asap. Four & a quarter
The music of the opening track was quite good & had me optimistic for the journey ahead. The vocals on the other hand were annoying as fuk & unfortunately the remainder of the album followed that track. There were one or two more cuts that I enjoyed musically, but I just couldn't with the vocal. And there were some radio hits on here from my adolescence. I hated them then & I'm not too keen now.
It's Creedence. It's awesome. This is another group that had a couple big greatest hits albums so I don't know that I ever listened to any of the normal releases. And so I loved hearing the deep cuts on this one. That Grapevine never gets old. Hearkens back to a time when I thought 11 minutes was impossibly long. Giving it a solid 4. 4 & a half even! Rounding back down to 4, but I reserve the right to come back & bump it up to a 5
I love this album. I love its older siblings & I love its younger siblings. They are not *my* children of course, but I love them in much the same way--differently, but equally. Equally *and* differently. I can (and do) listen to the entire thing--no skips--for days at a time. When my brain begins to anticipate the transition from one track to the next, I'll switch to shuffle and keep the party going. Reading others' reviews it seems there is a significant amount of backlash against RH at least in part due to the stans who insist they can do no wrong. I understand that sentiment and indeed probably fall into that crowd for some other acts. For this group tho I suppose I'm standing with the stans. I hope (& try) to not be a d-bag about it.
On the special S-tier scale that sits elevated above the masses I'm putting this at a 4.95. On the normal scale that equates to a sparkly 5 with a glowing halo and servants gently fanning it with palm leaves
Here's another artist that I'm told is great & I should like, but I just never got around to. This album is exactly what I expected (70s blues-inspired rock&roll) and in that context it's really good. He's got a reputation for a reason & that reason checks out in my book. On the other hand... Ol' Man River? Fkn Greensleeves?! What the hell are you doing?? I did like the Morning Dew. I do love the GD & will always associate that tune with them first, but they always do it so slow I generally check out until the jam. Back to JB. The blues rock seems great & good for him. However I understand he branches out a little later and can be more experimental and adventurous. I'm more interested in that at this point. But this was good. The good bits are worthy of a 4. But there has to be a penalty for Greensleeves. Just... *sigh*... what the fuk were you thinking? Old fkn Man River. Cheezus Crust. I'mma allow a 4 on account of Nicky Hopkins on the pie-anner. But I'm watching you Mr Beck. Best keep straight.
I feel like a broken record with all the “a highly recommended group that I’d supposedly like but just never got around to.” It certainly does have many ingredients that suit my palate; virtuosity, breadth of style, complex composition, looong-ass songs. And yet… it sounds so dated. Which seems like an idiotic critique. But I can’t figure out how to explain it any better. It’s like all the prog attributes are cranked to max. Maybe I prefer a little more variety there? I don’t love the vocal either. But that’s another criticism I usually hate. There’s def sthg here & I’m sure there’s some Yes for me. But this doesn’t seem to be it. I’ll say 3 &a quarter
I was not around for their heyday. So I'm missing quite a bit of the zeitgeist. I understand what it was, but I don't get what it was like. It seems to me that must have been an important part of this scene. Hell, it must have been integral because the music on its own is not remotely interesting. Could they be a victim of their own success? I know who they are & I know what they sound like because they are icons. But that's all there is. There's no depth. But then I understand that's kind of the point. So whatever. That's cool I guess. They do have a catchy tune or two. Which is odd because they actually only have one song. 2.5 stars.
