Less successful for me than Every Picture Tells a Story. Again, a lot of (pretty good) covers. Listenable enough, though, and the band of course is great, and there are a couple tracks I like.
I never liked Rod Stewart when I was younger because I was opposed to his voice. But now, I've begun to see his charm and fall in love with his style. This album honestly had me smiling the whole time. It's homey, comforting, and really enjoyable. "Country Comfort" is probably my favorite song on the album.
I think this record was fine. Favourite Track(s): Only a Hobo Least Favourite Track(s): Cut Across Shorty
For some reason I could not really delve into the music of Rod Stewart. Is it the forced way of singing? Or the fact that the songs are not very special. This record is a collection of songs I couldn't get really into it. Hard to pick a favourite track, because all the songs are mediocre at best.
Really enjoyed this one
There's no big hits on here, but early Rod Stewart is just good chill music and the instrumentals just go well with his voice. Much more rock than pop like his later stuff.
I listened to this entire album and couldn’t name one thing that stood out. I do not remember any of the songs already
Honestly, this rocked a little harder than I was expecting.
2 - Somehow both better and worse than I expected in different ways.
Generic Rod Stewart. He has better music.
This was fun! Nice covers of Womack and John/Taupin songs, great combination of country, blues, and British rock. That distinctive voice, and early days before he got too creepy. :0
Not quite as good as it's follow up "Every Picture Tells a Story", but very few albums in the history of music are. It foreshadows that work in every way. 4 stars
10/20/26. Really enjoy Rod Stewart's voice. Not my genre typically, but a pleasant listen even if I think a lot of the songs sound the same.

not the best album ive ever heard, not the worst.
2/5. A case where I left the album not feeling much of anything. Stewart’s Smokey/raspy voice is kinda interesting but not interesting enough to carry what is just an okay folk-rock record. It’s not unlistenable or anything but just completely uninteresting on both a musical and lyrical front to me.
Despite being a Celtic Fan, my opinion of Rod is that, like Clapton, his racism towards Asians in the 1970s made it impossible to have anything but a loathsome view of him. At least he gave us Rock Against Racism.
This was a fun album. I'd put it on again in the background in the future.
Always had a soft spot for Rod Stewart. Very good album
Something about his voice annoys the fuck out of me, and the songwriting is not even close to strong enough to make up for that. Some of his hits are pretty fun songs, but this just ain't it
Some moments I really like but a lot of duds to go with it
Not Rod the Mod’s best album, and it falters a little on the back end, but certainly contains some must-hear material.
Every Rod Stewart album makes me want to hop on my motorcycle and ride about 100 miles, so for me, it’s automatically 5 stars.
3.0
The cover is horrendous, looks like something youd make in computer science class in 2003. The music is fine. One year before Every Picture, which feels better by every measure. Chad - thank you for the long Zappa reviews and podcast rec! Gotta way too much content in the tank now.
Too much fun with Rod. This album is an absolute classic. Rods been one of my best discoveries on this journey. He’s exceptional and started so hot early in his career and carried it astoundingly far Favorites here are Gasoline Alley, Its All Over Now and you’re my girl. No skips here. In my opinion, like the other Rod albums weve had, its more of a complete work that Ill put on front to back
Every song is like just okay but nothing rocks as hard as it is trying to. Sounds like AI music.
3.5. Until this album ive always maintained i don't like rod stewart. However, here, his voice works rather than grates me and the bamd and tunes are top notch. I was surprised; i had put this off for awhile and was pleasantly surprised. If only i could say the same thing for kid rock and limp bizkit. Those sure were wasted minutes.....but i digress. This was surprisingly good
Meh, very mid album. Not a fan of Rod Stewart, but this album was very inoffensive. 2*
2.5
Enjoyable enough. Some beautiful stuff ('Only a Hobo'; 'Lady Day') and an inoffensive folk-blues sound throughout. He does sound like he needs a cough sweet, though. Keep thinking he'll take a break to hack up some phlegm then come back a choirboy.
A fine folky album. I’m alright with Rod’s husky vocals and it’s all pretty well performed, but nothing that will leave a lasting impression on me.
It’s possibly my most uncool opinion (among many contenders), but I do have a soft spot for some early Rod Stewart, particularly his work with Faces (who back him on this album), and even some of his solo stuff. I generally enjoy the folksy country/roots rock sound, but the quality is certainly rather inconsistent. There’s a mix of some really nice songs (such as the title track, and his version of ‘It’s All Over Now’), but others are merely decent, and it runs out of steam the longer it goes on. Good enough for a decent 3 stars overall.
Pretty much what I expected but rock solid
Not for me
Honestly thought I'd hate it after the first track but there are a few solid tracks here and it turns into a fairly decent record although I probably wouldn't listen more than once or twice
Not digging' it, man.
Bang average
Colour me surprised at how good this is. The songwriting was the standout over Rod's raspy voice
A voice only a mother could love, and yet Rod has grown on me over my life. Perhaps it's the wistfulness in the voice that reminds me of my own passing age, perhaps it's modern music's auto tuned lack of imperfections. Whatever it is, though not great, this one is good e-damn-nough for this listener. Pretty damn musical, too.
Not really fit for my european brain maybe? The guitars are gorgeous but half the songs lack energy
I always wondered how Rod Stewart got so popular. I remember “Forever Young” and his cover of Tom Waits’ “Downtown Train” from when I was a kid wandering around the grocery store with my mom. I remember wondering how such a scratchy throated (a trait that I do actually respect), lesbian-tennis-player-haired, British dude became so popular on the soft rock airwaves. 40 years later, and I still don’t really understand how this guy got so popular. He’s not terrible, and this record isn’t really terrible either, but nothing about either of them really stands out for me. The raspy voice is pretty recognizable, but the music all feels uninspired. Ultimately, I found myself waiting for this record to finally end. 6/10
2,4/5
Glad when it finished. No substance
strange for me but ok
Who was the first guy who heard rod stewart sing and thought "man, we gotta record this guy!"

05/10/2026 Found a previous comment that sums this up: I don't know, man. Rod Stewart. He's just... Rod Stewart. He's nothing special and he's never been something special. He's just a dude with a scratchy voice who can play piano but is only so-so when it comes to songwriting. This debut album... it's 110% a product of the time and hasn't aged well. I find it inoffensive with nothing realy exciting to recommend it. A little on the boring side, honestly. Just really middle-of-the-road background rock. Spotify listeners: 16.7 million

This was quite lovely. A bit too folky.
You can hear premonitions of “stay with me” and germinations of future ballads in this.
I liked the softer ones, I'm not sure his voice holds up to some of the blues rockers.
this was just a whole lot of nothing for me
It’s Rod but it’s not the best Rod. Not really sure why it’s here.
Going into this one, I was a little skeptical, but I actually ended up enjoying it more than I thought I would. It’s a nice blend of rootsy folk rock and blues, and the album has a relaxed, soulful vibe throughout. The production is very earthy and organic, with a rustic and unpolished feel that gives it a raw edge. It almost sounds more like a casual jam session than a traditional studio album, which really adds to its charm.
Vocals were kinda rough in the first song; pretty sure this is his debut album & his vocals sound shot & like he’s tryna sing out of his range but it’s getting better
I can't believe this guy is brittish
Man probably sounded 65 years old the day his voice dropped.
Not my type of music, but it was enjoyable.
Kyllä Stewarttia ihan mielellään kuuntelee. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Good Stuff. From before his mid-70's superstar phase, it's the sound of Rod trying a few different styles to see what suited him. And...it's good, but still short of his prime swaggering phase. Well worth a listen.
Not my fav, but hard not to at least enjoy Rod Stewart
Not my thing but he was talented
Meh. Maybe some of Rod's later stuff I can listen to. This ain't it.
rod steward has a nice voice, but the songs are bland. and most of them in this album aren't even his.
Hhmmm, where to start. Never really been a Rod Stewart fan, even though he's a National Treasure (I think?). I kinda enjoyed the songs, without ever "believing" them, if that makes sense. Rod singing these bluesy, country laments in his Scottish raspy voice. I couldn't get into it. I found a couple of the tracks dragged as well, and skipped to the next. So, I think I'm talking myself into a 2.
I haven’t heard too much from Rod Stewart outside of Forever Young and this album was a very different sound. I think it’s an awesome blend of country and rock, akin to Lynyrd Skynyrd which I love. Big fan of most of the album, a bit indifferent on one or two songs keeping it a 4 for me. But love the cohesion of the sound from each song. Tops are Gasoline Alley, Jo’s Lament, You’re my girl
Some good arrangements, I just wish they were sung by someone else. Not a fan of his voice singing in this genre and the whole album just felt quite medium, it put me in mind of a bunch of demo tapes in different country rock styles to see what fitted best. That said some lovely backing musicians on it. A very mediocre 2.
Dislike his singing voice.
Awesome, who new the IF YOU THINK IM SEXY guy could pump out some country JAMS
Rod Stewart is already known for simple minded, horny lyrics, and his music is generic. His voice has a charm to it, but he's never going to blow you away with anything revolutionary. On top of this, he had the audacity to make his second studio album a cover album? Nah, we don't need to listen to this before we pass on to the otherside. Favorite Track: "My Way Of Giving".

Country music sung badly by Rod Stewart! Gross! I hate Rod Stewart. This only fuels that fire.
It’s good! I like it. Rod Stewart in general is good. I wasn’t familiar with this album or any of the songs on it, but it was an easy listen front to back. Rock with a bit of 70’s flair to it. Also curious is that this album made the list with no recognizable songs on it. (4)
It's fine.
As much as I love Rod's voice, there's too much fodder in the albums
Great raspy albums
Undeniably and without a doubt one of the albums of all time.
This wasn't terrible it just wasn't quite what I was hoping it would be. It was in the vein of the Faces, but just a little watered down. I wouldn't mind a song or two being played here and there but I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to it again.
Average at best. Fell below expectations. I was expecting better.
Very average album in my opinion. Only two songs worth listening to over again. And one of those is country comfort written by Elton John and Bernie Taupin, which means he redid it and it wasn’t even his.
I don't much care for this, it isn't daring or compelling or particularly well-recorded.
An enjoyable Rod Stewart album
It felt kind of bland, even his raspy vocals could not really save it from being uninteresting.
Pretty solid rockish album
Really great if songs were shorter
Der er nogle rigtig fine sange, men også noget jeg får totalt spat af (I used to love her).... 2.5
"Only A Hobo" synes jeg var meget nice. Resten rimeligt meh
*47 Alt i alt var det lidt for intetsigende.
Meh
Super forglemmeligt. Det gør ingenting 2.0
måske ikke lige mig, men det er da fint nok. Kan dog ikke se, hvad det skal på den her liste.
Iv never been a massive Rod Stewart fan as I find a lot of his stuff just okay, it doesn’t massively interest me. I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Some catchy tunes. Not amazing, not terrible.
I'm still not sure why these two Rod Stewart albums are on here, especially given this is a collection of covers. "Only a Hobo" has not held up well.
many of the songs felt like they would never end due to ridiculous 1-2 minute outros
Easy listening, but to be honest, when it comes to Rod Stewart I only want to be listening to Maggie May
I feel like this just isn't particularly my kind of music, sorry rod
I feel there are better Rod Stewart songs and albums. This one was just a bit meh for me.
I feel this really suffered for being given to me the day after BB King Live at the Regal. This is vaguely bluesy soft rock that doesn't compare well to proper blues, rock or pop. I found it quite hard to care about.
