Reviews (page 3 of 7)
Very interesting to know some musics I listenned belonged to him.
((I didn't expect to like this as much as I did))
Love Rod Stewarts hits, but none on this album. Still good, some really catchy songs even on a first listen. Would listen again. 4
Great album. Loved it and needed it today 4.4
Fun album.
I love his music. This is a really easy listen and gives a glimpse of how good is songwriting was, and would become. Good stuff.
This is a very good album, the song selection is near perfact for Rod's gravely voice. I vacilate between this album and his debut as to which is my favorite. 4.5 stars
When Rod was nearing his peak. His love of folk shines through here and his obviously good taste. Backing band is Faces. Just a great 70's folk/rock album. Best Tracks: Gasoline Alley; Country Comfort; Cut Across Shorty
Lekker album
Fedt album med mange gode numre. Skal lige have en genlyt mere. Tror det kan et eller andet
This is a very good album, the song selection is near perfact for Rod's gravely voice. I vacilate between this album and his debut as to which is my favorite. 4.5 stars
Short album of pretty decent covers. I wasn't expecting to like this going into it, but Rod won me over with his smooth vocals like every woman over 70.
Really good album. Only a hit or two, but even the non-hits are catchy and well written. Good road trip tunes.
A pretty decent rock album with some nice ballads. 8.0/10
Good album, never listened to it. More rock than I thought was going to be on there
Tough one to rate - really enjoyed it but upon discovering after listening that it's mostly a covers album then it almost feels like a bit of a cheat? Rated solely for that initial listening but I'm still none the wiser to any talent Stewart may or may not have. Best track: Gasoline Alley
Rod Stewart's always catchy!
Mood: can't stop, won't stop
I enjoy Rodney
This is the kind of stuff I wanted to find doing this. I'm a slut for slide guitar. Album cover sucks. Songs are great.
Muy Rod Stewart.
Good album, love the songwriting. I'm just personally not a big fan of Rod Stewart's vocals.
Early Rod Stewart and the Faces were amazing. Beautiful songs, well produced. 4 stars.
Man, early Rod Stewart was so good! Not quite as good as his next album, but this is a really easy, fun listen
Smooth
Pegada blues abrindo o caminho sinais do que seria o hard rock. Destaque para Only a Hobo e Cut Across Shortly (as duas são cover)
3/17 3.5/5. Great Country-Blues-Rock album. Standout Tracks: It’s All Over Now, My Way Of Giving, Jo’s Lament,
It’s an ok album - a bit samey, nothing that’s particularly poor, but little that stands out either opening track the best
This album is ok but, for whatever reason, I was expecting more from it.
Pretty mid and mercifully short. Stewart's voice is very cool and unique though perhaps they were leaning on it a bit too much. Light 6 out of 10
... Just yesterday this site gave me another Rod Stewart album and I called it, "Old people music," and now I get this the very next day. Did I upset someone? Anyway, again this music is good but it feels still just as old.
He's got one of the all time great voices hasn't he? And yet none of the songs really stand out to me.
Rod Stewart is actually getting a 3 on this one, I don’t want anymore Rod on the list but I can’t be angry at this, good old folksy rock with nice arrangements and a voice that I dare say is growing on me
There are better Rod Stewart albums out there but Gasoline Alley still scratches the itch
Pretty standard stuff from RStew but his voice is really good here and while it's not the most interesting thing in the world, it's enjoyable in its simplicity.
Lowkey tuff❤️🩹❤️🩹❤️🩹
Its a solid collection of songs and a good point of reference for Rod Stewart. There are some real highlights, like "Cut Across Shorty", but outside of edification it didn't do much for me as an album.
It’s alright
This was incredibly average to me.
6.5/10
🌕🌕🌗🌑🌑 (rounded up because I enjoyed some parts, but I truly wish I did not have to round at all) Was mighty pleased with myself when I walked into the kitchen and said "this sounds like Faces" while Emily was playing this. Much like Faces, this album has some really rockin' songs if I do say so myself but also has its fair share of uneventful, even somewhat nose-wrinkling, songs. They all have a distinct character, and I can't fault them for that, but this goes a little too twang for me without the seedy counterbalance of a song like "Stay With Me." 1: Bad | 2: Okay, No Desire to Revisit | 3: Good, Conditionally (OR Inconsistent Mix of Qualities) | 4: Great (OR Technically amazing but missing the sauce emotionally) | 5: Amazing
Its OK, standard rock really. I always associated Rod Stewart with the blue rinse parade and that sailing song. It's ok album nonetheless and gives me a better impression of Rod Stewart's popularity.
It's fine 👍
Decent.
Such a great voice, and there’s some decent songs on here as well. But I like the Rod Stewart stuff that is more rock and roll - less folky.
ну звучит вроде и неплохо, но никогда не нравился особо голос рода стюарта. музыка обычная, достойно 3
Допустим..
I mean it’s alright
A pleasant enough album that didn't really strike me as anything all that amazing.
Ein frühes Rod Steward Werk. Keine bekannten Hits, aber solide Rock-Musik. 3/5
Middle-of-the-alley, more like!
Endnu en overraskende ok plade fra gamle Rod. Lille 3
A big meh tbh, the first couple of songs were really solid but the rest of the album was kind of disappointing
Solides Album der frühen 70er. Eine gelungene Mischung aus Folk und Rock.
bland and inoffensive
Nice
Back when Rod was good (although this is an odd choice, far from his finest) and before it all went rapidly downhill in the late 70s when he began to wonder if he was sexy.
Better than I was expecting, but the bar was low.
Redundant. This era of Stewart's career has already been well-covered by this project. The lack of timeless hits makes this album less than essential.
Hit and miss. But some cool songs are on here.
First track is a damn banger. It's a very nice song collection. Driven by country blues sound to most of them. I lean more to the country ones. Not anything Revolutionary, but beautiful and touching at many moments. Still some songs are just fine. A solid 3.
Exactly what I expected about 3/4 of the time, and a little better than I expected the other 1/4. Decent songwriting, the band often jams out a little too long. I like jamming but I think the nature of these songs would be better served if they were short and scrappy.
Solid in all aspects. Don't think I'll really remember much from it- he sounded really good doing this folk style, though.
One of my moms best friends is probably one of Rod Stewart's biggest fans, so it was nice to get one of his albums. It was good!
6.5/10. It’s a good album, but it didn’t fully grab me. I like the raw, bluesy, folk-rock feel it has, and Rod Stewart’s voice definitely gives it character. Still, not every track sticks with me, and I don’t see myself coming back to it that often.
This was fine, his voice sometimes drives my crazy and other times I like it.
Decent album, I enjoyed it enough.
Just kind of alright-ish. I definitely dislike his voice; Stewart was born in '45 and this album came out in '70, so he's in his mid-twenties here but he sounds like a retirement-age guy.
While I'm mostly unfamiliar with Rod Stewart's extensive body of work I feel like I enjoy the few singles from him that I have been exposed to. I can't say I've ever heard a full album so I was glad to finally do so with Gasoline Alley. I feel like Rod Stewart has been relevant forever, so I wasn't sure what to expect from an early release from his career. I was pretty excited to hear that he sounded as good as ever in 1970 and already had the grit and gravel in his voice when he was so young. While overall Gasoline Alley didn't wow me, it did just enough in all facets to make me understand the allure of Rod Stewart. In hindsight I can't tell you anything specific about it, but the album was just a nice drift into an alt rock realm for forty minutes. Despite a lack of knockout singles I found the whole thing pretty listenable with Rod piping in the vocals. Support from the backing band is solid, but it's clear that Rod is the star of the show. In the long run I don't think I'll come back to Gasoline Alley, but it was a nice glimpse into his career that helped prove to me that the praise Rod Stewart gets is pretty well earned. He's obviously an artist that I should get to know better. I'd be interested in hearing more from the various phases of his career. 2.85 stars
Overall, this lands a little flat for me. It’s far from his best work, and honestly I’d rather listen to his stuff with Faces. Nothing here is particularly bad, it just ends up feeling like a pretty middling ’70s rock album.
A distinctive voice, which works. Opening song is an odd first song on the album. Nothing really stands out, but a solid album though. Song choices lean to a little deeper than rock albums at the time. Has a bit of countryish sound and sometimes folk.
Day 270 Good but there’d definitely be better to come from him. Highlights It’s all over now You’re my girl
i was finding myself digging this album! its not flashy, but it definitely rocks. with this, i wouldn't mind a bit more Rod Stewart in the future
Way more blues and country sounds than I was expecting. There weren’t really any big hits on this one but I did enjoy it.
I really like Rod Stewart, but I've always thought that this album is overrated. His voice is so unique that I will always enjoy what he's in. This just has nothing standing out. No hits. No great covers. It's just generic Stewart.
Rods not my thing
Rod Stewart seems to exist solely to be filler on classic rock radio. But even then I can’t remember hearing any song of his. Not the worst thing ever but kind of pointless
Crawling to 'neath a tree. But it is all over now. I'm not someone who means much to them, all they see is confusion in my eyes. What more could you do?
Never really been a Rod Stewart fan but interested to hear his early stuff. I mean whatever, this album is inoffensive but nothing I particularly care for. I would give it a 2.5 for being a decent album.
There was a moment where Rod Stewart was one of the coolest motherfuckers on earth, and this was juuuuuust before that really happened. He's debut album has some all time bangers, and the Faces really launched just a year after while this...well it's got some great renditions but he's still really finding his voice. It's a perfectly good record but mostly unremarkable, and it's good that there's other better works on the list.
Fairly generic-sounding soft rock in an era when lots of bands were being very inventive and stretching the genre. A few decent tunes but nothing to write home about.
I like Rod Stewart but I didn’t love this album
How did Rod Stewart go from a cool megastar to the image he has nowadays? When did that transition happen? I guess I liked it? Didn’t love it.
3.5
Highlights: It's All Over Now, My Way of Giving, Country Comfort, Cut Across Shorty Wasn't all that crazy about it on first listen. Ngl, I was kinda amazed at how Rod Stewart is on this list in the first place. No shade, but I just don't see him as a great artist, just a great performer. Heck, only later I found out the record really is mostly covers. On top of that, I never heard a word about this record. Is this some UK bias from the editors of the list? But overall, the performance really is great, I do have to hand him that. And even thought the material is borrowed, it blends nicely together.
His voice and style of incorporating Irish trad rock with country western is so unique that it makes it hard to rate him against his contemporaries. Very easy album, nothing grating or annoying and while some of the songs were questionable (just a hobo?), the title track, all over now, and cut across shorty were the highlights for me.
I think I audibly groaned when I saw Rod Stewart. I mean I like Maggie Mae, maybe a couple others. When I got around to listening to this it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. Propped up by recognizable covers.
Decent background but probably not something I'd seek out again.
It's all fine. This is early solo Rod Stewart, so you're gonna hear a sound more akin to his work with Faces. It's funny that he's basically had this raspy voice pretty much his whole career. Is he 25 or 70 here? A large majority of this album consists of covers too, so it's hard to really assess this.
Obviously some great stuff in here. Some of it drags out (It's All Over Now). Gasoline Alley itself is probably the weakest track on here. Overall though a really fun, pleasant listen.
FAVO: Gasoline Alley, Country Comfort, Cut across Shorty
No Rod Stewart bangers on here, but still good!
Sweet Jeebus that utterly unique voice!!!. Despite not completely connecting with the ballads, the songs where he gets a bit of momentum and lets those raspy tonsils shine bright are a pure joy. 3.5 star
Now why would you butcher Country Comfort like that? A perfect song by Elton John. No cover needed. Otherwise pretty good album
Album #75, Rod Stewart, Gasoline Alley, ⭐⭐⭐ Good little album, this one. Big fan of Rod Stewart, especially in Faces. I think he’s just got one of the best voices ever. And this album kind of proves it. He can do that bombastic, swaggery rock style, but this really shows he can handle the sensitive, soulful, folky stuff as well, arguably even better. He’s a good songwriter too, though there are a lot of covers on here. His own songs are strong, but the album leans heavily on other material as well. It’s all suitably raggedy and rootsy, and I really enjoyed the overall feel of it. I’m only giving it three stars because, to be honest, no song really grabbed me. There’s no “Maggie May” or anything of that level here for me. But I would still recommend it. It feels like the kind of album some of my friends would really like, especially people who haven’t come across it before, because I hadn’t even heard of it myself. Big fan of Faces, so I’m hoping some of their albums show up later on the list.
When I saw Rod Stewart pop up on this list, I did an audible sigh. But I needn't have worried, as this was actually a bit of alright. Favourite tracks: Gasoline Alley, It's All Over Now, Cut Across Shorty, You're My Girl (I Don't Want To Discuss It)
Third (and last?) Rod Stewart appearance in the list for me, and this one...eh. Music is good but I feel like Rod sounds really rough on this one.
Such an old fart rock critic move to have both 'actually Rod Stewart's early albums are really good' on here. Bit redundant. It's OK. John Peel wasn't right about everything.
it was ok, Rod Atewart has done better stuff. The guitar was awful
Rod is alright. Some songs felt a bit long but it was a decent enough listen for a slow Friday morning.
The whole album has a pretty good tempo and closes strong. Rod Stewart’s raspy tone is nice, but my brain continued to expect him to say “Maggie” even though it’s nowhere on this record. He does say a lot of other names though with the same delivery, which I thought was kinda humorous. 3.1/5.0
The choice of songs combined with arrangements identifies this as a RS record even though many of the faces are the same. Not sure any of his albums warrant a place on the list. This one like many of his others in the early seventies has some great songs but the collection is uneven.
Good early Rod Stewart with a great band
I like the smoky voice and general vibe. Benji enjoyed “Only a Hobo.”
Classic Rod.
This is to funk/Rock as La Croix is to soda. Sure it’s enjoyable and doesn’t make you feel guilty, but sometimes you taste the real thing and realize what you’ve been missing.
This was cool. First song is a banger - didn’t recognize anything else I don’t think. I guess Jeff beck left at this point and in came Ronnie wood - who went on to the Rolling Stones later. Fun fact Ronnie woods son married Steve Harris’ daughter. Interesting. Or maybe Jeff beck came after Ronnie wood. Anyway for 1970 nice to not hear hippy folksy stuff.
Enjoyed this. Decent work. Liked the "Only a Hobo" cover.
When I first saw that this was my next record, I was a bit uncertain given what I know about Rod Stewart. It's not that he's bad, it's just not a voice I seek to listen to. This record was really good though, and kept my attention. The upbeat rhythms, Rod's voice complementing the music nicely, it was all very well composed. I would listen to this one again.
The title track is a great opener. The tune and mandoline backing add an air of folk to it, which I like. The same folkiness shows up in Only a Hobo, especially with the subtle fiddle in the background, and a few other songs, but the album gets rockier as it goes on. I quite enjoyed this, but not enough to listen again.
5/10
An okay album, I liked Country Comfort the most.
I'm.mot really a fan of Rod but I got Every Picture Tells a Story last year and it was better than I expected. My expectations were therefore higher from this and while I quite liked some of the loose , rocking stuff, the acoustic tracks relied on enjoying the vocals, which I didn't teally.
Rod Stewart has always sort of just been there. I remember my mum thought his hair was funny. Sailing seemed to be number 1 for ever. My brother preferred The Faces. Then he went very glam, with his leopard print tight trousers and soft rock 80s hits Baby Jane (annoying) and Young Hearts Run Free Tonight (which I secretly like), but I suspect he's always been an old soul at heart. When I was older, I grew to like Maggie May and The Killing of Georgie, both old hits by then. It hadn't occurred to me he might appear on this list, but I guess he might as well be here. He's not very original, perhaps, but he's musical and knows how to pick a tune. I thought this was a decent album.
3- Stars (7/15)
meh
This is somehow neither good nor bad
Rod Stewart, Michael Bolton and Jon Bon Jovi are the three stages of a raspy-voiced, big-blonde-hair-having pop-rock frontman pokemon evolution, but I could not tell you in what order. Gasoline Alley was fine.
skipped one day cause of fathers day i hope i didnt f up anything, listening to this now and then the album for today was expecting something different from what ive heard from rod stewart but so far loving the energy, the band is killing it and rod performs so freaking good front to back high energy tracks very well performed, those drums slap, loved the bluesy vibe
The early 70s phase of Rod Stewart is actually good if you like his period with The Faces. Pure 70s rock with his signature raspy voice. This is a mix of covers and his own songs. Decent but nothing groundbreaking or remarkable. Just decent songs.
Enjoyed this a lot, think some of the deeper songs weren't great but the rockier ones were a lot of fun
Well the guys voice definitely grew on me a little It usually really annoys me when singers sound like they smoke a pack a day, so unsurprisingly I really didn’t like the title track. I do think the more energetic rock heavy songs use his voice a lot better to the point where they’re pretty listenable. Cut Across Shorty was definitely the best of the bunch, liked the sound of that one a decent amount and there were some cool moving pieces. Again I just don’t think the mellow country sound works at all here, so most of the tracks on this one just kinda fall flat. A lot of the instrumentation doesn’t really leave a strong impression on me, so it really does feel like he needs the vocals to carry (and even though I said I didn’t absolutely hate his voice, it’s not good enough) We’ve definitely gotten worse in the past, pretty easy 6.5/10 or so. Also unrelated to this album but this guy blatantly ripped off Taj Mahal from Jorge Ben Jor’s album for his biggest hit so he can’t be that good of a songwriter
His voice is rough; I think I'd like the instrumentation but it's not clicking for me
This isn’t a bad album at all, but it says something that of the 9 tracks here, the ones I enjoyed the most were 5 of the covers. It’s only his second studio album, so I’ll cut him a bit of slack. However, I can’t really cut him much slack for his compositional skills. For some reason when he’s doing covers of other people’s songs, he sounds confident and the band behind him is rocking. On his own original material, the structure of each track just feels off, and falls deeply into the “first minute is the whole song” trap. I enjoyed the covers on here a lot, but they’re a great showcase of other people’s songwriting abilities, which just makes the gap between those covers and the original material here stand out a lot. His original material on this album isn’t bad, but it’s just painfully boring, like he’s trying to mimic what makes the people he’s covering so effective, but without really nailing the secret sauce that makes it work. Did I need to hear this before I die? I guess… maybe?
Fine
medium enthousiast
I forget that old Rod Stewart was good
Massante. Chato, perdi tempo
Rod Stewart has a rough, distinctive voice, but this, his first solo effort after The Faces, makes it clear that he is a solid musician.
I guess I only like a few of Rod’s songs. I mean his other ones not on this album
It’s not my cup of tea. But I see it for what it is.
A mix of quieter folky tune, and loose but more energetic folk/country rock that strikes a pretty nice balance of both sides. Stewart’s got an identifiable voice with a notable rasp - it doesn’t stand out to me as having amazing talent, but his sound works and is memorable. Just an all around decent album, some enjoyable numbers, nothing I have a real issue with, but not something I’m likely to seek out much.
So Rod Stewart was in Faces. Huh! I like the song It's All Over Now here
I couldn’t have told you what Rod Stewart’s voice sounded like before today. It’s distinct. It’s distinctively annoying. His band is pretty lame too.
Good ol Roddy 3.5/5
Rod Stewart's 2nd album. It's a mix of covers and originals. The album is good, but there's only one notable song, and none of his top hits. Pitchfork: n/a Rolling Stone: n/a Best Songs Gasoline Alley Only a Hobo
I much preferred this version of Rod Stewart to what he became. If only he had stayed in the guise presented in this album instead of tiger skin leggings I would have put him further up my list of likes. Although he has become a national treasure and renowned pop hole filler so cannot be too harsh. Of his early albums this is perhaps the weakest but still a lot to enjoy. The title track being cream of the crop. 3/5 23/2/26
i'm trying to think of a joke about them pumping his stomach cuz there was so much cum in it and say that they also pumped gasoline out... any input would be helpful.
Gasoline Alley - 4/5 It's All Over Now - 3/5 Only a Hobo - 3/5 My Way of Giving - 3/5 Country Comforts - 3/5 Cut Across Shorty - 4/5 Lady Day - 3/5 Jo's Lament - 3/5 I Don't Want to Discuss It - 3/5 Average score: 3.2/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Not his best effort.
I wrote you off before, Rod Stewart, I didn't know your game. Some of your songs suck balls but you have a sex to your voice. I get it.
I do think this album is good but every picture tells a story is just so much better that i can't give this album more than a 3
I did not think I would like Rod as much as I did although his voice and inflections tend to be the same on each track which can grate the ears after a while.
Listening to this album going round and round while working this morning. The fact that I *can* listen while working means one of two things, I'm so in flow with what I'm doing that the music doesn't cut through, or much more likely, the music is 'inoffensive'. I.e. isn't demanding my attention. The track that cuts through most is 'It's all All Over Now', it being familiarly made famous by the Rolling Stones. I enjoyed this rendition and was distracted momentarially to check who recorded it first. Interesting that Rod Stewart's raspy voice can be so nuanced - capable of producing strained screams and tender storytelling. He does convey lyrics and not just sing along. The album is a comforting 3, might listen again, but not lighting any fires for me. Total number of tracks: 9 (surprised it's that long - I must be immersed in my work after all). Fave track: err...It's All Over Now, or Only A Hobo 17/02/26
This was pretty solid. A few catchy songs, a few boring songs. Nothing outstanding, but very competent.
Album 51 Top 3 favorites off the album: Jo's Lament, Only A Hobo, Lady Day He cooked with the variety of string instruments on this one. Big fan. Also a big fan of folk and bluesy sounding things, so this hits pretty well. I also enjoyed the storytelling in some songs. Not much else to say, though. It's good, not great. It was fine to listen to. I could revisit it, but I probably won't.
Well-written album with good execution and form. Maybe a little bland, but it’s a solid, cohesive project.
Fun, for sure.
Better than I was expecting it to be.
This was not bad! Unfamiliar with this list of songs. I think his songwriting changed quite a bit nine years after this was released. Apparently this guy performed oral sex on sailors or something had to get his stomach pumped? I could see how that would change a guy. Also, the ending track has some cool rock n roll attitude; “you’re my girl!”
Not too bad.
I mean, it’s an album. Kind of fake country.
This is the type of things that would attract angry reviewers shouting “LESS BRITISH ALBUMS PLEASE WE NEED MORE DIVERSITY” , well as I’ve said before, if you need a “must-listen” list with diversity go do a fucking census and create it yourself. But yeah it’s quite mid. And I’ll go back and continue thinking that rod stuwart is the “do ya think I’m sexy” guy. 3/5
I found this one to be pretty forgettable. It took me 2 days to get through because I kept forgetting I was doing it. Nothing wrong per se, but nothing super great either.
Not sure how to feel about this album. Honestly probably the first time I’ve felt stumped in this challenge. At times it felt like a 2, 3, and 4 star album. I did go in to this album expecting boomer mom rock, and it happened occasionally, but there were other redeeming qualities to the album, among the sleepers. Safe to say there’s more to Rod Stewart than what he’s famous for, but I don’t know how much…
This was a good bluesy rock listen. I like the gravely voice, it has a lot of whisky in it. Not sure why this got so much hate. 5 stars, it is not, but surely not a bad album
After 5 minutes his voice is so grating
Bog standard pub rock
Voz rouca foda. Gostei da Only a Hobo, me traz espírito de aventuras com os parceiros. Letra filosófica. Dava pra comer uma tangerina enquanto ouve. Álbum bom, adicionei uma música na playlist. Média de sempre, 3*
This is another 3.5 stars for me. Rod Stewart's voice sound very good, and the songs are done well, but most are covers, and I just don't think this is more than another good classic rock album.
Rod Stewart knows how to make rock n roll. There are some nice folk-rock songs on this album too, but his craggy wail is built for rock. Even on the mellower songs, he can’t help but go for it on the mic and add some drama. The mixing on this album is a little funny. Sometimes, Stewart’s vocals sound a little muddled in the mix, as if they’re too far back. His energy shines through no matter what, but I thought it was a surprising choice.
I grew up thinking Rod Stewart was a bit of a meme of a performer and that he is really only known because older women thought he was hot, but he is a really great singer with such a unique and awesome voice. This was a nice listen. It's not really jam packed with show stoppers, and I would hope that the record that has "Maggie May" on it would be on this list (I haven't checked), but it's a nice record either way. Interesting production choices. I can't get over how loud the spanky bass on "Country Comfort" is. If you turn down your speaker volume as low as it can go, you'll hear it just as loud as Rod's voice.
All I knew about Rod Stewart was that he had signature haircut, a plethora of flamboyant, bordering on tasteless, suits, and a couple of disco hits. It turned out Stewart wasn't so simple. Firstly, he launched his solo career while still being in the Faces, under two contracts. Secondly, on this album, almost entire band plays with him, yet it was released as a solo album. And thirdly, in keeping with the fine tradition of the 60s and 70s, two-thirds of the album consists of covers of songs by other, already established artists. There's the secret to his success! As for the sound, there's no hint of the disco that would follow a decade later — it's upbeat rock 'n' roll with an acoustic guitar and a bluesy edge. "Dylan-esque," I would have said, if the lyrics weren't mostly about past and current women. I don't really like Dylan, but this would offend him.
I know that he writes better songs and has better albums. This is not bad but it doesn’t showcase his abilities.
I'll take 70s Rod over 80s Rod any day of the week. Okay listen; good bluesy voice, some good drumming on there and the guitar, obvs. Nothing offensive. Noice.
It’s okay. Somewhere between folk, country, and rock
Banal comme anal: sans grand intérêt.
Yeah I guess
I’m on a roll with these mediocre albums lately. Damn early Rod Stewart is so uninteresting. At least his later stuff is more palatable, but this was just bland. Another one of those albums on this list that halfway through I ended up just tuning it out. 2.5 / 5
Didn't love it. Didn't hate it.
This sounds like a Faces record, which I'm all about. This does feel like it drags on a bit. Not sure if we'll have later era Rod Stewart on this journey, but I'll cross that bridge when I get there. Until then, this is a decent starting point
The most 3 star album of all time
Oh joy another white guys transformative rock album. What could he possibly do that's so groundbreaking. I do like this it's just not that different from every other 70s rock album on this list. I'm just being a hater. He really is just hootin and hollerin all over the place huh. Just screaming into that microphone. Wait why is this kinda cute it's not just rock. Favourite: Only A Hobo Least favourite: I liked them all there was no standout bad track
Not bad, kinda rock/folk.
6.2/10 - I like the rock elements, and it’s not country enough to make me dislike it. Cool album.
For me, a pretty forgettable album. Not bad, but not memorable enough for me to seek it out again. 3/5 stars, also not a very good album cover.
5/10 Best songs: Gasoline Alley, Cut Across Shorty Some songs are catchy, but I don't think I really like his voice, and I feel like he never pushes the boundaries very much. Like, if he really rocked tf out at the climax of some of the songs, I could see this album being outstanding. As is stands, it's just okay.
I am excited to listen to this. Immediately, I am loving the sound of track 1. Track 2 has a very groovy, upbeat vibe and I am enjoying it. The vocals remind me of Mr. Big. I like the storytelling, especially in track 3. I caught the reference to America's "Horse with No Name." The guitar in this track is actually heavenly to listen to, this song was amazing. There are no lyrics posted for track 4 so we shall see. I really like the guitar riffs in this song. I just fact-checked, and Rod Stewart became the lead singer of Faces in 1969 after the first guy left, which means he did in fact sing on "Ooh La La," the album I am most familiar with. Track 5 is good but it is nothing super impressive or notable to me, it's quite repetitive actually. I feel like this album falls off as it progresses. It started out really strongly and the more I listen, the less I enjoy it as a whole. Overall, the album was pretty okay. I think maybe if I was in the mood for music that really sounded like that, I would put it on.
I liked it but no song dared to compare to Stewart’s untouchable classic do ya think i’m sexy?
Rod Stewart was a great straight ahead rock singer with Faces and the Jeff Beck Group. As a solo act he started with this softer rock/blues/country style. Not sure why this album would make this list, it's okay, but his next Album, Every Picture Tells a Story is his masterpiece, so much better, and after that he started making huge money with worse and worse music. I guess maybe I'd take the money too.
Nothing to write home about here. The album isn't bad, but none of the songs really grabbed me.
The songs are too repetitive and tretchez out too long. 3 stars
Can't go wrong with a raspy voice, I guess? But I just listened to it and I've pretty much forgotten it.
It's Rod Stewart, it isn't bad, just classic rock
I’m not sure how I made it this far knowing who Rod Stewart is but never hearing a single second of his music until now. It’s pretty good. Much better than what I would have thought
This was good. Fav song was Country Comfort. It made me feel some type of way
Great voice, but all the songs are very samey.
Decent. Lady Day and Jo's Lament are pretty good.
Inoffensive background dad rock is the perfect description for this album. It's not awful, it certainly isn't great either, but it sure is forgettable.
I know hes an icon but was never really into Rod Stewart. I felt like I needed to go put on some mom jeans (no offense to mom jean wearers) while listening to it
Like it
A tad better than his following album "Every Picture..." but still mostly middle-of-the-road rock 3.3
I like some of his tunes. Overall a good album.

this album is if you took the median average music of 1970 and put it in an industrial blender to create the audio equivalent of chicken nuggets
Ok
It's alright I guess
A bit to country for my taste, but I can appreciate the artistry and guitar work.
Only a Hobo is excellent
Raspy
I like Rod Stewart's voice, his music is just average though.
This has some of Rod Stewart's worst vocal efforts in my opinion, and I'm generally a big fan. It's a good album, but not one I would come back to.
Not his best work, kind of forgettable.
3 1/2 Stars: Ol' Rod always seems to be the forgotten voice of 70s and 80s rock music. I mean, does anybody ever ask the person in charge of the music while driving in the car to throw on some Rod Stewart?! But, don't tell me when one of his songs comes on that you can't jam to it. That voice and some catchy hits over the years, it all works especially on a great mixtape. 'Gasoline Alley' is perfectly fine. A little bloated by the end of its runtime, but overall catchy and pretty unoffensive.
A solid, but unspectacular folky rock album of it's time. I don't think there was any problem with any of the performances, and I can stomach Rod Stewart's voice, but I wasn't blown away. Only a Hobo was the song I liked the most. 3 Stars.
Eh, it was fine.
Cool
Rod Stewart's vocals are... interesting, to say the least. Very throaty and scratchy, which worked fine for his guest appearance on Jeff Beck's Truth, but doesn't really serve this rootsier music as well. The instrumentation is pretty good though, so I'm giving this one a 7/10.
I hated Rod Stewart on Jeff Beck's Truth, so he really surprised me on this one. I expected the raspy voice to get old quick, but he manages to not be overly present, and to balance it out with excellent instrumentation for the most part. Pretty good record overall, despite a few misses here and there (You're My Girl's bassline is so freaking good and would belong on a much better song than this 🥀) Standouts: My Way Of Giving • Country Comfort • You're My Girl (I Don't Want To Discuss It)
My first Rod Stuart. Not to bad but no real standouts. He definitely has a distinct style and sound- the song subject matter was a little sappy for my taste. Overall- decent album
After possibly the worst produced album openers I've ever heard, with a guitar line that Rod Stewart had to shout to be heard over, this album really redeemed itself. Some real jams in here. Does high energy very well (It's All Over Now, Cut Across Shorty), with the scrappy drums and crazy instrument solos, but the low energy tracks are very nice too. Definitely an album that feels immersed in the culture of its time, showing the back alleys of 1960s Britain in a light that only those who were there could fully appreciate. On the other hand - the production isn't great, the band is sloppy at times and Rod Stewart voice is an... acquired taste. And the first and last song are absolute trash. So 6 / 10 feels fair to me. Best track/s: It’s All Over Now, Country Comfort
It’s like someone learned their chain smoking aunt could hang with The Rolling Stones. The songs are descent, the band is great, and rod is raspy.
I always like Rod Stewart’s strange, endlessly raspy voice, and as a solo artist, he had such a particular sound. This album doesn’t capture me the same way “Every Picture Tells A Story” does, but it’s still a good listen.
It’s okay, probably never gonna listen to it again, but hey.
I'm generally a fan of Rod Stewart, and this one has some of my favorites. Gasoline Alley, It's All Over Now, Only A Hobo, Cut Across Shorty, all gems. A few others are kinda mid but overall it's a fun listen.
Lotta Rod this but found it generally enjoyable. Hobo song a highlight
Rod Stewart has such a distinctive voice. I don’t know that I was familiar with any of the songs but I still liked the album overall.
Ja ganz okay, sehr Stimmungsvoll. I.wie zieht Rod als Interpretenstinme bei mir nicht so, obwohl das Gesamtbild stimmig ist.
This was fine--I wouldn't turn it off. I also wouldn't turn it on. Not sure why it's on this list.
A nice collection of songs, but nothing exceptional though
Banger intro track the electric guitar and the vocals make it a perfect track Really fond of the multiple layers of instrumentals It's kind of what you expect from a country album a certain tone and pattern Overall a really energetic and passionate album would recommend
Great middle of the road album. Nothing really too special here.
Always had an aversion to Rod Stewart, but I listened to Every Picture Tells a Story for the first time last year and didn't think it was too bad. This isn't as good as that though. Has it's moments, but kinda dull overall.
It's a shame this album is mostly covers because I wanted to make a comment about him writing a bunch songs about relationships struggling, him and his woman failing to stick to eachother, only to then make a song fictionalizing an alternative protagonist called "Shorty" and having that be the one song where the singer and the love interest have actual undivided passion for one another But instead I guess all I've got to say is, uhh, he's sure got a voice on him and these songs are rockin' and rollin' and whatnot Dunno if they're so amazing they warrant a mostly-cover album being on this list along with another Rod Stewart album and a Faces album, but it sounded fine enough at least, and there's worse things to be had than this
A bit trite, didn't find it that special. Maybe I didn't listen too carefully to it
Was fine. Didn’t hit me as hard as others for this era.
I can only handle his voice for a few songs.
Rod Stewart songs are fun even if most of them sound the same.
A bunch of songs I don't know that sound weirdly recognizable. Good on ya Rod, I'll prob still only ever remember Maggie May as this all kinda sounds the same even though it's pretty good. The final track is the only one that feels and sounds different.
Starts badly (REALLY badly) with the title track. It’s fucking woeful. Picks up with some honky tonk bluesy rock with “It’s All Over Now” which is rather enjoyable. Then it all sort of fades off into unremarkable guitar rock. It’s perfectly enjoyable as an album, but doesn’t light any fires in me.
Some songs really long and repetitious. But good sound.
Ytterligare en påminnelse om vilken bra artist Roddan kunde vara. Underbar urkrämning av It’s all over now med stökig replokalskänsla. My way of giving och Cut across Shorty i samma stil är också bra. De akustiska folkviseaktiga spåren drar ner betyget ett snäpp.
Många riktigt bra låtar och Stewart tolkar dem väl. Bobby Womacks It’s all over now gör han bättre än Bobby. Däremot håller jag Eltons version av Country Comfort högre. Roddens egna låtar gör inte heller bort sig i sammanhanget. Inte revolutionerande på något vis men en mycket fin skiva.
Fine- nothing really caught my ear but nothing was bad
Fun sound but I didn’t fully connect with the album
It's a pretty decent listen if you're a fan of the Faces. Rod's in great voice -- and his particular brand is strong. But it can be a little wandery.
Favourite Track: Cut Across Shorty
Good fun!
Nice groovy riffs albeit slightly repetitive at times. Definitely underestimated Rod, but tails off towards the end. Favourites: Gasoline Alley It's All Over Now My Way of Giving
solid
Solid Rod, not his greatest but I can always listen to that voice.
Cool album by Rod
It’s All Over Now // Country Comfort // 2.5/5
gasoline alley- 5 its all over now- 5 only a hobo- 5 my way of giving- 5 country comfort- 5 cut across shorty- 4 make it stop lady day- 5 jos lament- 5 youre my girl- 5 this shit is so boring bro
Ok-ish, good vibes.
The songs are solid, and I dig Rod Stewart. But nothing really jumped out at me until the the last song... the bass tone and funky line was cool. But overall, I don't really see choosing to revisit the entire album. But, if somebody else put it on, I wouldn't have a problem with it. 3.5... rounded down.
Just another mediocre 70s rock album with a guy with a gravelly voice that went irrelevant over time. I’ll listen to it but I won’t love it.
Honestly I think Rod's singing performance on this made the album easier to listen to. Musically, there were times when I didn't like the instrumentals as much, but he carried the song enough to make it bearable. I'd rate 3.5 if possible.
i like rod stewart's music but this one has never really been it for me. it gets a lot better with his subsequent albums. this is headed in the right direction, but it mostly feels like a beta version of what makes early rod great. really the most interesting pieces here are covers and are mostly good but uninteresting. boy howdy, the cover of elton john's 'country comfort' is bland as hell.
It's fine. He's okay. Inoffensive.
Liked a few songs, but didn't love it by any means. Country Comfort and Cut Across Shorty stood out. 3/5
Enjoyed this despite myself. Top song was Country Comfort. 3/4 depending on whether I choose to replay it later
Nothing crazy but an enjoyable listen.
It's a fun album, I didn't listen to everything on this, but seems a very 70's, really down to earth and straight forward. I'm more familiar with Every Picture Tells a Story and I like it more than this, but still is a really good album of Rod. I like his approach here.
What I've learned from this list is that artists should really stop trying to cover Bob Dylan songs, unless you're Warren Zevon. Anyways, I feel like I can tolerate the singer's voice a lot more than most people on this list, but I'm also used to really out there voices. As for the music, it's an album of okay country covers. I loved the opener, but I feel like nothing quite reaches its level.
Oye, no está nada mal, pero no es nada del otro mundo.
He has better
Not much to say. Just extremely generic rock. It is somewhat energetic and has some variety but nothing all that exciting. This album is not bad by any means, but it’s also not good.
middnv
Quite liked it but it didn’t stand out to me very much. Nice to have on in the background but didn’t feel particularly memorable. Fav song: Gasoline Alley Least fav: You’re My Girl (I Don’t Want To Discuss It)
Bluesy rock, with some country elements. Very multi-layered, with clean and mildly overdriven guitars in there. Harmonies and lines interweaving nicely. Not bad. Some gospel influences here and there, seems more 90s in places. Lady Day makes me actually enjoy country/slide guitar. Lots of nice little embellishments. Best track - Gasoline Alley 3 stars

Mooie, rauwe stem. Mix tussen country, blues en rock :)
Best Rod Stewart album so far
I LOVE the Faces. But I don't think this album belongs on this list. I would/will give five stars to these guys' next three releases: A Nod is as Good as a Wink / Every Picture Tells a Story / Ooh La La. On this album, the sound - that wonderfully shambolic coordinated chaos - is coming together, but the songwriting hasn't yet developed to match it. What's to come, though, is amazing.
Saw the track listing and thought well there is nothing here I've heard before. Turns out I knew the first 2 tracks. On the whole, not a bad album. Not much more to say than that, worth a 3
Rod had something back then. The songs were not as good as his time fronting the Faces, but you could hear their influence throughout this record. In other words there were a few songs which reminded me of 'Stay With Me'. But I still enjoyed it more than I should have.
Decent Rod but nowhere near his creative peak, imo. Doesn't really hit for me except for "It's All Over Now," which is fantastic.
Pretty good vibes on a hot sunny day, but also fairly basic classic/southern rock. 3/5
I don't think I've ever listened to Rod Stewart before, despite knowing the name and being able to recognize him. I certainly haven't listened to an entire album before. This wasn't bad. Enjoyable Rock with clear lyrics.
Not bad really, lil folkier than I was expecting. Standouts: Only A Hobo, Country Comfort
Surprisingly not a bad album, on in the background and didn't irritate me, possibly because of the era it was from, and possibly due to the plethora of songwriters on the album
This felt really average. Nothing seems to memorable. It's not bad by any stretch, but also not great by any stretch either.
Rod Stewart's early 70s sound is great: mandolin, pedal steel, 12-string guitars, his fired up, ragged and ramshackle energy and voice. Not all of these songs win me over, but the good ones are good. I hate to admit how much I like some of this, because 80s me would take that time traveling Delorean to here and now and try and run me over for it.
Rod Stewart covering classics. Wait, this is his second album? Very middle of the road album. Not a huge Rod fan, but got to give him credit for his game.
Never much of a Rod Stewart fan, but I can see why this album made the list. There are some real charmers here, especially “Country Comfort.”
Pretty good stuff, been meaning tobliaten to Rod Stewart and like half of these songs are good
I like Rod’s voice. Works better for some songs better than others. Does he support Celtic , difficult to tell 🤔🙄
It’s just not as rocking as the album which followed, which we’ve already had on the list. Which makes me wonder why this one is included as well. All a bit too slow for me, Rod is best when letting it rip. Tbh this album is saved to a 3* by ‘Cut across shorty’ and ‘You’re my girl’. The bass line on the latter particularly good, and unsurprisingly played by one of the Small Faces mates whose musicianship often save a Rod song.
I had an ex boyfriend who loved rod stewart, and he was a total moron so it’s hard for me to take this seriously. Sorry to Rod.
...is this what Rod Stewart sounds like? Huh.
I like me some Rod Stewart but this album was kinda meh
Helt ok, lät ganska generiskt "papparock" i mina öron. Ingen lowpoint. Kanske skulle ha igång i köket någon gång
This was a decent album to listen to, with the clear standout personally being 'Country Comforts'. I had of course heard of Rod Stewart, but never actually listened to a song of his consciously so this was a pleasant experience and a good testament to the benefit of this whole project. Overall, I think this will get a slightly above average rating so a 3/5.
Should you hear Rod Stewart before you die? Yes. Should you hear Gasoline Alley? I don't think so. I don't know enough about the Rod Stewart and Faces back catalogue but I'd like to believe there is an album from each that is better than this. It's not a bad album I just don't think it's a mandatory one. 2.5/5. Raising to 3.
I guess I have a bit of a soft spot for Rod Stewart. Musically I think this is pretty standard boomer rock, but the guy’s voice is just so weird and good.
I was unfamiliar with your game
He gets 3 stars for being my mom’s favorite. Not much else going on here though
It's All Over Now...to close to trying to replicate the Stones cover. I would still rank Grateful Dead's cover ahead of both. You're My Girl closes the album with a decent banger. Solid album.
Not a fan of Rod’s voice.
First time I've ever listened to a Rod Stewart album, and likely the last. I think I see the appeal to others, and it's certainly better than some other bands of the day, but in the end Rod is just not my jam.
Fun. Lighthearted. I listened to 2/3 of it and enjoyed it more than I anticipated
I missed the years he was decent, so I just associate with his mostly terrible 80s stuff. And Maggie May. This is probably not going into regular rotation but was a lot better than I expected.
I just don't understand the appeal of Rod Stewart. I've never really cared for his raspy vocals, even though they sort of work here. The further in I listened, the more I enjoyed it, and his vocals seem to serve the bluesy rock he's putting on display here. This was serviceable, but nothing so good that I would ever considering playing this again on purpose.
A classic, wouldn't listen again but not bad
