An incredibly unique sound and historically wild live act. They are one of those bands that everyone should listen to at least once and this is certainly as good an album for that purpose as any of theirs. While the truly lived the lives of ironic rock stars it is difficult to give total love to all their content.

This album is fucking bugshit and I think more bands should be this unhinged

now girl. what is this?

Love the noise, but it's likes more experimental this time

This is more noise rock than what I am familiar with

A wise man once said, "Never go full retard," but in this case I must make an exception.

Noisy, like 2 songs and then just weird stuff in between. 2/10

Not what I was expecting? Experimental and noisy, but not bad

muy malo

32 minutos de random bullshit. 1/10——>1/5

Human Cannonball was OK, I hated the rest, particularly USSA. Heard it before? ❌ Listen again? ❌ Rating out of ten? 1️⃣

Great album. 1 star, the default lowest is appropriate.

Nope. Edgy cringe, aged atrociously.

might need to give this a few more listens

No matter how much I like experimental stuff, the humour in it and that my brother liked this band, I could only enjoy some of it. Although I suppose sometimes it isn't about enjoyment, it's about pushing the envelope.

Glad I relistened to it, I almost forgot it. A perfect example of this kind of punk albums at the end of the 80s which are just a mashup of different styles, experimenting and parody. I think Ween will gor farer and make better albums, but this one is still a fun relisten.

These guys are always able to pull together a groove out of unsuspecting noise

Always a great listen. And when my kid doesn’t turn it off you have to take that into consideration too. This band should have been bigger.

A solid and fittingly strange album from the band with the sphincteriest name in the game.

First part is nice, second is kinda experimental :D

Not as bad as I thought it was going to be

“Keep Austin weird” “No, not like that” Psyched out acid flashback noise punk. Human Cannonball is an all timer.

Butthole Surfers make music that should only be judged based on how violent it makes you in the moment.

These guys actually kicked ass live when I saw them at Lollapalooza in 1991 but this album is extremely song-deficient. There's a few snippets here that could be something but actually aren't.

It was fine at first and then got worse and worse.

This…kind of rules? I never got into them bc of the absurd name but I really liked this album. The samples are interesting, the music is great, it’s funny. This is a genuine discovery for me.

Never listed to Butthole Surfers other than "Pepper" before. Wacky, erratic, but cool riffs and I can definitely hear how they preceded the grunge era. Probably need a few more listens to totally fall in love with the album.

Does a lot in 30 mins and doesn’t get tiresome. Also, a nightmare.

Feral and unpredictable. This stuff inspires a whole new strain of existence

Awful and I stopped listening midway. Crude and rude and have no idea why this is considered music.

Quite a big fan of the opening track, and then the rest of the album very quickly devolves into noise. Don't think I'll be checking this one out again

Locust Abortion Technician Pretty much exactly what I expected, it’s noisy and discordant, and wilfully erratic, with snatches of melody or harmony amongst the deliberate eccentricity. Generally I like music that comes from an art-conceptual origin, even when it's not that listenable, but I wasn't really that into this, its studied bizarreness feels a bit too contrived. Its origins in the infertile grounds of US punk and hardcore also don’t endear me to it greatly either. It's not totally without merit though, there were a few things I liked, the doomy bass driven grooves of Graveyard and 22 going on 23, and the mucky blues of Pittsburgh to Lebanon and the post punk Joy Division vibes of Human Cannonball. Outside that I could take it or leave it ultimately. It’s not a bottom dweller, but it’s not something I’d come back to, ergo its a 2. 💥🏄 Playlist submission: Human Cannonball

another heavy metal noise band, probably appealed to the 15-17 yo white male "rebel"

During the first song, I thought it wasn't so bad. Then the rest of the album happened. I can get behind noisy garbage. I can't get behind this particular brand of noisy garbage. Meh. Ok songs: Sweat Loaf, Human Cannonball I like the idea of an album that makes you go what the actual fuck. But also it's not nice to listen to.

6/10 - Too weird to ever play out loud. Can’t play it in front of friends, families, or neighbors but that’s punk music sometimes.

An amalgamation of genres and sounds that work surprisingly well together. The whole thing feels a bit silly in a good way, but I guess that's what you get from a band named Butthole Surfers. 8/10

nicht wirklich in meinen 1001 top-alben.

Unhörbar

I liked 2 songs. 2 stars.

I thought everything was pretty offensive, the group's name, the title of the album, and a lot of the music was either offensive or annoying. The only good thing I could find to write was that most of the selections were short and the dog on the cover of the album was cute.

4 out of 5. This album gets chaotic, weird, and even made me uncomfortable, and I have to give it props for that.

Everybody likes that one Butthole Surfers song that no one knows the name of. It isn't on this album. This one starts off with a skit with a pretend kid asking his dad what regret means. The dad answers, "A funny thing about regret is, it's better to regret something you have done than something you haven't done." Not only does this not answer the question, it's immediately proven wrong by listening to this whole album.

Crunchy like two week old dingleberries.

Loud Distorted noise rock , proof that Americans can do punk before they forgot how in the 90s

In my personal top 10...yeah, so 5 "Kun Kun Kun Kunkun Kun Kun Kun" stars. (We still miss you, Teresa and fuck that RIP shit! We're kickin' ass instead....)

Obviously a divisive album, and I can see why people don’t like it, but this is a whole lot better than anything jazz.

Shithouse

I’d like to abort this from the list.

This is the endgame of "my friend's band is playing, they're really good, you should come check them out, tickets are only $10 or $8 with a canned food item". They are technical and know what they're doing, but man so much of this feels like people trying to get a rise out of someone for nothing besides that bit. It's dry and boring while acting like it's full of attitude. The cover makes sense. This feels like a real tough guy punching you in the face, but then you realize it's a clown with a big boxing glove punching and it makes a beep noise when it connects and you go, I guess that's something.

Felt like an experiment in seeing how much you can get away with and still sell it. So much about this album is something to be less and less proud of as the years go on. They gave the consumers a song like Human Cannonball and the sample of a cool song by someone else in Kuntz. It's an album, you can have some fun with the format. It is interesting how many artists do the frustrated artist thing and produce the equivalent of vomit in their medium to get the frustration out. Then people pay for it. I'm almost talking myself into a higher rating. Ratings mean nothing. I'm happy that I will be done this in a matter of days.

pretty good, if a little strange.

honestly, i don't think i get this one.

Metelimusiikkia.

Really surprised. Never heard of them before but really enjoyed the album especially the song Sweat Loaf

Horrible music AND clowns on the cover? The easiest 1 yet.

LocusAbortionTechnician sounds like a recommended password.

I actually enjoyed this quite a lot

About what you'd expect from what is presumably a comedy/novelty rock act. Could have been worse, I guess.

This was some weird ass shit that I hope I never have the pleasure of hearing again. Still, I was somewhat fascinated and ended up listening to the whole thing. I actually feel like they did a good job at what they were going for. But just… never again please.

Not as oppressive as I initially thought, in fact I actually found their darker experimentation to be quite compelling. The presentation is ridiculously over-the-top and the music truly sounds like they're throwing random shit at the wall, yet it all feels inexplicably intentional at the same time. Shocking to have fever dream music, thai samples, and heartbreaking testimonies of sexual assault come together somewhat cohesively. As much as I respect the execution though, I'm not sure it's something I'd really come back to. Standouts: Graveyard • Kuntz • 22 Going On 23

I really grew to like this. On my first listen, all I could think was "great, an edge lord album." However, once I got to The O-Men, a track mainly composed of loud banging, screeching and squishing noises, i realized something incredible was happening- I was tapping my foot. On second listen I was able to appreciate all the diverse components they brought together to make a truly confounding and weird experience.

Little too out there for me

This is what I envision it sounds like when you get a concussion, an absolute auditory assault from the world go that made my head spin a little

I try not to be musically closed and call it just noise, but I hate it.

What a weird album. There were some interesting ideas distributed around, and I didn't hate it - but I didn't like it much, either. I guess we should expect a band with this name to come up with a song like Kuntz, and I found the (presumably real) samples used in 22 Going On 23 pretty distasteful too. Won't be listening again.

This album was fun as fuck. Weird. The play on the Sweet Leaf riff? Awesome. I would definitely listen to this album again, and would add it to my collection.

I thought the butthole surfers were more punk and less psychedelic. I get the appeal, but it’s not for me. Definitely a “state of mind” kind of music.

This isn’t one of the bottom 20 albums rated in this countdown, but it’s just outside of that, and for good reason. There’s really not much here at all. Just a bunch of noise and lack of talent.

Some good stuff but too much nonsense

this album was remastered lol

A truly miserable listening experience.

It should have stayed inside the butt

2/10… experimental rock / *1987

I listen to the albums early morning with a cup of coffee. This album must be listened to late at night with some recreational drugs. It's not to be understood, just felt, and it felt bad, really bad.

Somehow both wildly self indulgent and wildly uninteresting and unenjoyable to listen to. Grating, noize garbage that I couldn’t wait to be done with. 1/5

Whoa! Sweet Loaf summa it all up. Nasty garage rock and I liked it! Light 8

what on earth is this. Rating: 1/5 GEMV - (07.09.2026)

So glad I listened to this as part of this project. Will probably never listen again. Rock on VHS!

Despite the fun name this sounded like static

Feverdream and Nightmare

1,5 Highlights: Pittsburgh to Lebanon, Human Cannonball

Very very pleasantly surprised by this - sludgy, noisy, avant-garde punk fest. Very unique stuff indeed, maybe not for everyone, but I could not care less. At least 3 stars with real possibility of revisiting these butthole guys haha. Good find

I tried. This was never and will never be my thing. Human Cannonball almost started to work on me.

WHAT, THE, FUCK. That was the worst thing I've ever heard.

Amazing album art. Given the band name and album title- irreverence is expected and delivered. Short and sweet and fucking crazy. Highly experimental and intentionally challenging to "enjoy" but the weirdness makes for a really engaging listen. I am retroactively coming back and giving this album 5 stars. I keep thinking about it and wanting to listen to it again and that is what makes a 5 star experience to me.

Not my fav album, it's not even my fav Butthole Surfers album. It's OK.

It is an album, certainly. It's very experimental, with rock elements throughout the length of it. It's a departure from what most would consider a great album, but it's one to listen to, at least one time, it is not all bad, it has its moments, but it's not on my radar.

Some nice ideas here

This is one of those albums where I’m not sure it’s supposed to be enjoyed in the traditional sense. It’s punk rock, noise rock, psychedelic at times, and then somehow you get "Kuntz" thrown in there. "Human Cannonball" is the clear highlight on here, but if you could listen to a bad trip, it would probably sound like this album.

As is often the case with art that sets out to challenge the conventions of its medium (in this case, rock music), this album has moments of provocative music, and other moments that get a little lost in the sauce. The seesawing of the opening “Sweet Loaf” flipping between two motifs is fantastic. The relative silence of “Hay” is a great touch too. Other songs like “USSA” or the wordplay on “Kuntz” have a bit too much fun just being snooty or nonsensical. But I can allow it for how they're balanced out by songs like “Human Cannonball”, which I feel beholden to pay even more attention too for how conventionally normal it is. Could’ve gone without the last song, but maybe it’s cathartic for some to hear. 4/5. It’s not necessarily enjoyable but it’s an excellent use of free will to deconstruct rock music like this

I thought this was better than the average score suggests.. it's experimental and I thought the noise they create were quite cool. Pushing guitars to where they can go a bit like Sonic Youth or MBV I feel like this band could market themselves better - if you call yourselves Butthole Surfers and have stupid album covers with clowns, and a track repeatedly saying kuntz, it just creates an impression before listening. I assumed it was going to be a joke. Based on the music it's pretty clever in places, avant garde stuff Ok The O Man is annoying. Downgraded from 4 to 3

I've known of the Butthole Surfers for a long time now, but I've always avoided listening to them because their name led me to believe that they would be way too immature for me. I'll give them one thing, though, they sound *exactly* the way you'd expect a band called "Butthole Surfers" to sound.
