Reviews (page 3 of 8)
Seems like a spiritual predecessor to grunge in some ways. Slower, heavier music. Human Cannonball is one of my faves so far because it veers more into the punk sound. Clearly most people including me only know Butthole Surfers via songs like Pepper and Who Was In My Room Last Night? (which rule btw) but this is interesting to hear more of their music before those songs popped.
Really fantastic, like Mr. Bungle with less porn and more LSD.
I don’t hate it and I don’t do enough drugs to love it. One of the most surprising albums to grow on me. Second listen and something clicked, it feels like the fringe of society vocalized. Upsetting, psychotic, anxiety inducing and angry. It’s a parody of music and society. Fuck it.
I'd pick up a $8 used. Funny, twisted, interesting album. Lots of not fully baked ideas here. This is closer to what I'd consider exciting or interesting when a album comes up on this service. I've heard it before, but almost as background music. Like sweet loaf, pittsburgh to lebanon, just really cool guitar tones, sludge, solos, etc.
I had not listened to the Butthole Surfers until now and I'm pleasently surprised with this pick. It's incredibly noisy, chunky, and melodic. If I had known this is what they made I would have listened to them a long time ago.
Haha, daar was ik wel even aan toe.
I started listening to them with independent worm saloon and never explored the back catalogue. This was a great surprise.
goofy corny nonsense i love it
I thought I was going to hate this more than I did. I wasn't starting with much preconception, other than knowing their name, but I did end up liking the sharp edge on the music which sounds like a precursor to a lot of stuff I like now (like Ty Segall, for example and any number of contemporary west coast "grunge" bands). There were moments that I hated, but the vast majority I was impressed with, especially for it being as early as 1987.
A band I knew the name of but not any music. Clearly shock-artists, they were ahead of the times of the early 90s, but I can see how they were influential to MTV-vibes and Grunge feels. Musically I am into noise/experimental/punk energy so overall I enjoyed it a bunch. Sounds like live would be an absolute spectacle... but not sure I would want to be there. Not sure what 22 going on 23 is supposed to say, but feels kinda gross. Musically I like it, but the shock humor is kind of stupid to me, it would be more hilarious if the music was high-brow taking itself seriously and then just keep the name... Butthole Surfers.
One of the best albums from one of the bands most influential on 90s alternative rock. Although not currently in the lowest rated albums in this project, I've seen it down there before, and it's probably in the top 10% of albums on here.
Listened to this while extremely sleep deprived, this was a perfect fit. fuck knows if I'd like it when my brain's working tho.
Sweet, sweet, butthole music.
weirder than I thought - liked bits of it, but some was a bit too experimental to be enjoyable. Like what they're aiming for here though so I'll round this 3.5 up to a 4. Tbh feels like a mid-late 90's album more than late 80's
I love the first song, like the rest a lot.
Loved it. I had never listened to their music before. I kind of feel bad that I missed it when I was younger.
You know what? it's a vibe.
It’s an EP, really, but still completely fucking awesome.
peak BH, very evocative. and if you see your mom this week...
The first metal album I have ever listened to, can't say I absolutely loved it, but it was pretty damn cool.
Sounds exactly like something you'd expect from a band called Butthole Surfers
Funny name
Classic album that got me into these guys.
I think I love it. Tough call between this and electriclarryland, at least 7/10.
Hah hah, gloriously weird, very noisy, exactly my type of thing. Fave track - "Graveyard" maybe, although I did enjoy the faux metal glossolalia of "The O-Men" a lot
Wow I enjoyed this way more than I thought. I’m not sure why. It just hit right.
this is some real ass music. so many great features of this album including the cover and name. somehow nostalgic and just really great 😏
Fast ein Meisterwerk. Neben der Napalm Death-Scheibe ist diese Platte bislang die ungewöhnlichste in dieser Liste. Und damit eine wohltuende Abwechslung.
Good old punk. Some heavy lyrics...breaking some taboos. Their messages still apply to our society today.
Fun, experimental punk album with a few great songs
Glad to have heard this, but it's just not ween enough for me.. maybe not in the right mood, perhaps will improve my opinion later on
Penis Music (Affectionate). A lot of this kind of just kinda flies by for me, but "Human Cannonball" and "O-Men" in particular are fun tunes. 6.5, maybe a 7/10.
No soy tan del metal, pero si algo tiene el metal que me guste es la habilidad instrumental y este album es casi que solo instrumental. Lo disfruté, ¿lo volería a poner? Maybe never. La portada divina, eso sí.
Nowhere near as bad as other reviewers make it out to be. Sure, it’s noisy and a bit messy but I found this more engaging than some of the other straight up punk on this list so far. A bit Zappa, other parts Beefheart in places, it’s was a bit of an amalgam of things thrown into the pot. A fair bit of it didn’t land but at least the closing track rounded this off well.
The first half of the album was inane drivel. Kuntz and 22 Going On 23 in the second half were standouts. 22 Going On 23 got me choked up a bit. The heaviness of the first radio clip, the bass, and the second clip giving a hint of something like 'the problem with no name' described by Betty Friedan. Makes one consider the weight and impact of one great trauma against a lifetime of little traumas that you are shamed for discussing and chided for not being more greatful. Makes me sad for my grandmothers. They didn't suffer any great traumas like the first caller, but both are 22 going on 80 and have missed out on things they shouldn't have due to the expectations placed on them and the needs of those they care for. They would probably consider the scale balanced, but my heart still hurts for them. Probably not a chord that will be struck in many, but it was in me. For moving me so, I grant Locust Abortion Technician by Butthole Surfers a solid 3. I hate you, I love you.
Playing catch-up from a rather exhausting weekend, this was a nice album to start my week with. Weird but not intolerable.
This album has a clear direction, a cohesive atmosphere, and, at that, it is really great, with some interesting influences. But it is a bit chaotic when it comes to sounds. It feels like a mixture of different sounds that, at some point, feel even conflicting. And there are also some tracks that are a bit too pretentious to be good. So, I feel this album has a nice direction, mainly between being horrific and comical at the same time, and the atmosphere catches that so well, but there is not much there, and the continuous addition of sounds lacks of cohesiveness and some kind of justification. I can see what people see in this album, but I feel it needs some intention, a better development.
Weird and beyond rough around the edges, but not lacking charm.
Ahh Butthole Surfers. Early albums are.... Interesting. If you want to hear more traditional music from them go listen to Independent Wormhole Saloon or Electric Larryland. Pepper even charted! Early Surfers albums were more about seeing how far you could go. Their live shows were something, I never to to see them but I once met a guy that did. They liked to set a cymbal on fire and use it. I've read they had a list of things that would get you kicked out of most venues nowadays. They were weird and wild and didn't care what most thought of their music. They have better albums than this but this one is a memorable experiment.
Enjoyed it
337/1089 very noisy but it was pretty good icl. i might not return to it really but i liked hearing some of the songs that were probably influences for songs i like now 66/100
I love experimental but this got really experimental and not in the best of ways. I am definitely more of a Pepper BS fan than whatever this album was doing.
interesting
Well, this album was a real challenge. Good thing I won.
A lot more interesting than I thought it would be though I'm okay with never hearing it again.
Gnarly grungy punk garage rock that pulls it together pretty well.
beetje TE creatief... 2.5
Not half bad
Best Song: Sweat Loaf. After a questionable opener, it ended up landing on an actually pretty compelling groove, which unfortunately gave some expectations that a lot of the rest of the album didn't fulfil. Worst Song: U.S.S.A. I think this is intended to be actively unappealing. Overall: There are some potential diamonds hidden under a lot of rough here. I really find myself wishing that they would stay on a particular sound or groove long enough to develop it into something, because they seemed otherwise really keen to jump around, even within a song.
Pretty great. Can't believe it was an 86 release. Pretty ahead of its time in a lot of respects
3.0
Listened to it as background music and not really sure what to make of it. I'll give it a 3
Very interesting album, not sure what to think of it either, don't hate it but....
The first half is an all timer but this feels a little too short to have as many troll songs as it does, would be curious to listen to a longer record from them or one where they don't have like 4 sound collage tracks
I usually hate this type of music and it would’ve got a one straight off. But the names and the cover just had me giggling and I persevered. Sometimes it did just sound like offensive noise. But other times I could hear tunefulness and humour. I may never revisit this but I was surprised by how much I warned to it.
Not a fan.
It's the Butthole Surfers. You get what you get.
es muy curioso, no se si me gustó pero es interesante
my butthole got surfed!
Funky weird and quite enjoyable I liked. Human Cannonball was large vibe and reminded me of Declan. Only reason for the three stars not four is The O-Men reminded me of KenTON and I didn’t like that.
W butthole surfers, good rock.
Cooler than I expected. Maybe too cool. Like if the Pixies had all their energy sucked out.
Lost my long review
Getting a lot of points for being funny
Kinda crazy lol. Album was pretty enjoyable, the last three songs were my favorites, with Graveyard (Pt. 2) being the best imo. Crazy name also. 5.7/10.
This was the first truly weird album I ever heard or owned. It holds a soft spot for me. That's said it's annoying crap that I have a soft spot for. I'll listen to it again.
для панков.
I don't like Sweat Loaf, but the rest of this album is utterly brilliant at being complete dog water. On multiple listens, it becomes so bad that it's good. Then you realize what this inspired and it all starts to make sense. An album from the darkest depths of hell. Respect (as of now) - (6/10, 3/5 on this scale)
I thought I might enjoy it but it wasn’t very engaging . Not awful though. 2.8
I totally understand why people hate this album, but there’s a certain charm to it. A mix of actual good music and actual nonsense. Also not trying to take itself too seriously. “Sweet Loaf” is a great song, and I kind of hate that “Human Cannonball” is about to become one of my most played songs this year. I’d rate this 3.5 if I could. It’s just a bit too irreverent for my taste to make it 4 stars, but it’s a high 3. Hate the cover, though, but not taking points off for it.
W sumie to całkiem niezłe. Takie 3,5
Listens: 3 Standout Tracks: Sweat Loaf, Human Cannonball, 22 Going On 23 I thought I saw this album on the bottom 20 list of worst albums, but I checked last night, and it might be competing with one of the upper, bottom 20 albums. It's not on there presently. I thought this album was kind of cool. Its definitely psychedelic and completely out there, but I think that's kind of the point, especially after reading more about the Butthole Surfers and the kind of music they make, the kind of shows they do and clearly also the names of their other albums (and this one). I like weird, and this album has it in spades. I like most grunge music, and this album is definitely showing some pre-grunge guitar distortions. The homage to John Wayne Gacy as the album cover is pretty twisted, as is the subject matter of several of the songs. I think my point is that most people simply misunderstand this album and what it's trying to say. Do I know what it's trying to say? Absolutely not, but that's part of the fun.
Kind of cool, but noisy.
Ничего не понял.
Understandably a tough album to love. Released in March 1987 between the polished slickness of albums like Peter Gabriel's "So" and the packaged rebellion of GnR's "Appetite for Destruction." It's very easy to see how the Butthole Surfers were trying to be anti-commercial to the point of being unlistenable. Anything to avoid making the music industry happy. When listening to "U.S.S.A." can you hear a demented Beatles "Back in the USSR"? Or the early influence on the White Stripes? Now go listen to their one MTV hit, "Pepper" from 1996's Electriclarryland. The early ingredients from "Locust..." are all there. Did they make a listenable track on purpose or by accident?
Interesting album for sure. Very experimental. But not something I'd really want to listen to again as listening to it a second time became less interesting and more tiresome. I can see why people like it, but it's a bit too unstructured for my tastes.
450/1089 - Sounds like they had a lot of fun making this.
I like the grunge sound. Annoying at times but enough redeeming qualities I gave it a 3.
Madness
More listenable than expected
Surprise. I liked this somehow
Sounds like a more chaotic mudhoney or a noisier pixies. If people describe this as trash... Guess I kinda like trash then.
🤡 I liked this a lot more than I thought I would. Human Cannonball rules. The opening track while being a Black Sabbath rip still owns by itself. Some in between stuff like U.S.S.A. and Pittsburg to Lebanon is cool and atmospheric but I wouldn’t want to listen to them outside the context of the album. Some skips if I ever came back to listen. Particularly The O-men, which was kinda funny listening to when I realized what the joke was but I already know would get old quick
Por momentos me pareció una genialidad, otros, lo peor que escuché en mi vida. Asi va 2.7
Weird but Ok.
I thought this would be harder going than it is. It's loud, it's weird, but it kinda holds together fairly well. Some of it is just noise for noise's sake, but there are some actual tunes in amongst all the weirdity.
Well it’s certainly not easy listening. It is however, surprisingly enjoyable. The first track “Swear Loaf” switches between a lovely melodic guitar section which accelerates into a big noisy riff with some dissonant vocals wailing over it. It kinda works! The next few tracks the guitars grind and screech over throbbing bass lines, sometimes it works, sometimes it goes too far. Then we get whatever is going on in “Hay” lots of weird effects but I enjoyed it. “Human Cannonball” has a more standard song structure, it’s alright but not as interesting as the rest of the album. Back to some more noisy mania for a couple of tracks and then a nice folksy world music one that’s inexplicably sung in Thai (I think). The album closes with my favourite track “22 going on 23” which has a harrowing interview between a rape victim and a talk show host with crushing, oppressive guitar and bass over the top of it. It’s very atmospheric and moody.
This was good album definitely have never heard it and have mostly just heard the hits of the butthole surfers
👍
Weird but cool. I need to be in a very particular mood to listen to it.
It is loud and abrasive and very tough to listen to at points But compared to some of the other "experimental" music I've heard through this project I do enjoy at least part of this album.
Album 13 3/17/26 What a ride. Only knew two Butthole Surfers songs going in. As a guy who's tried brain melting experimental music before, this wasn't as fun a trip as what I normally listen to. My first impression was that a different group of Texas punks living in a home studio and having a bad trip could have made something quite similar. However, the positives were that most of the songs landed as individual statements and the album did not overstay it's welcome by stretching past 31 minutes. Assigning a number rating or choosing key tracks is the hardest it's ever been, as it's difficult for me to choose what parts of the whole experience I liked the most. I liked the spun-out vibe of Sweat Loaf, Hay, and Graveyard 2 the most. Human Cannonball stands out as an attempt at a stand alone rock song and was just alright. I almost turned around and gave this a positive score, because at least it made me think deeply, but there are some tracks I wholly disliked. Namely, USSA and 22 Going On 23. Every other track I haven't named sort of blended together in my subconscious the same way most of Trout Mask Replica does. I've settled on a 3 because I had fun, and I do think I will be listening to more BHS in the future because of their listing, but I prefer happy trippy stuff to GG Allin type filth.
An unfortunate album cover that I’ll try to ignore. I came into this with no real expectations; I only know them from “Pepper” and the one song they had on the Beavis and Butt-Head Do America soundtrack. I was ready for some level of weird rock & roll… but not quite ready for this level of weird rock & roll. I enjoyed my listen, but stopped at only one for fear of ruining it. Is it parody? Is it drugs? Are they Zappa fans who just don’t have the talent to make Zappa-level music? I can't answer these questions, but I’ll keep trying.
Whenever I think about the Butthole Surfers (which isn't often), I can't help but hear the Dead Milkmen say "there's a time for taking and a time for giving, but ripping off the Butthole Surfers is how we make our living." I'm not so sure about that, but I do prefer the Milkmen to the Surfers. This is what it is: loud, experimental, a little out there. If you like it, you like it. If you're not in the mood for it, it will be annoying. It's not my jam, but I'm glad it exists. We need more weird things in this world.
I like wildness but I don't like self-important nihilism. this has a reek of self-important nihilism. music: hated. (⌐■_■)
What a strange album. Quite enjoyed it though.
When I was 15/16 I thought this record was great, I even bought it on vinyl. Whilst there are some songs I still enjoy (Sweet Loaf, Human Cannonball and 22 Going On 23) the rest of the album is a band intentionally making music as annoying and bad as possible, which is hilarious but not worth listening to more than once.
Fuzz pedal and attitude go a long way
Kind of think if you're gonna have a Surfers record, Electriclarryland was the place to go? I think you have to be pretty into this stuff, or at least really in the mood for it, and today I wasn't. Three stars.
Madcap Musical Madness
A reluctant 3 based on its inventiveness. A difficult listen unless you are in the right mood for something super sub-culture wierd
Seems like a lot of fun, will revisit.
What the hell did I just listen to? Crazy carnivalesque music that is like the sound of someone succumbing to madness. It is enjoyable in its own way just for the audacity of it all. And "Human Cannonball" is actually pretty straightforward and a really good song. Other experiments don't work but it's never dull and I give them a lot of credit for creating something this bonkers.
Look, when you go surfing in buttholes, youre gonna turn up some crap. A postmodern deconstruction of rock and punk and metal that often doesnt work, but it has its moments and isn't as bad as the rating here would suggest. I respect the audacity, and the fun house madness can be really interesting. I'll always take bold stuff that falls on its face sometimes over consistently playing it safe
Really stretchy and experimental. Not held down by any boundaries. The results are patchy but that doesn't matter - they went there and explored what was in that corner.
I enjoyed some of this but some of this was just too much.
Good. But I wish it had a faster tempo. In other words, I wish it was more "punk."
Actually an experimental album but very well executed. They used every sound and instrument in the vault but it was still a good listen. There were some goofy moments but overall not nearly as bad as some other albums on this list.
Sillaihan tää pändi on tuttu jo takavuosilta ja yleinen kataloogi sisältää aika polveilevia settejä. Äänitysolosuhteisiin ja aikaan nähden saatu myhkee saundimaailma rakennettua. Jos ois eheempi kokonaisuus niin varmaan vois nelkun heittää ja oikein huonona musalistalusimispäivänä tää menis kägöseen mut kolkki lienee ihan mahottoman mukava vaihtoehto.
Paikkapaikoin ihan hirveää paskaa, mutta kai sekin vaan on taidetta (Kuntz; pun intended) jota tämmöinen jöröjullikka ei vaan ymmärrä. Seassa kyllä muutama ihan julmetun kova riffi, jota kuunteli enemmän kuin mielellään. Paikkapaikoin tunnelma oli vähän samanhenkistä kun Twin Peaksin kolmoskaudella Nine inch nailsin esiintyessä Roadhousessa. Tosi kaksijakoinen levy, niin mennään keskitien kolmosella.
Almost there. I like it in general, but I'm not sure if I need to listen to it again.
This seems to get a bit more hate than necessary, but wasn’t that entertaining a listen. Still, had some redeeming sections that boosts the rating a bit for me. Not as hateful as the global reviews, 2.75/5
I could almost be convinced to give this 4, were it not for the one song that sounds like mumbling on speed. I kinda surprised I didn't like this less. But 3 listens in and some of it is actually interesting--and it's increasingly obvious how influential they were.
You know that opening scene from David Lynch's "Blue Velvet" where the camera pans down from white picket fences and immaculate lawns to reveal a writhing layer of beetles underneath? Well that scene comes to mind when I think about the Butthole Surfers. I'd never listened to them before, but from what I'd heard, they struck me as the ultimate embodiment of irreverence. Spokespeople of a weird and unpredictable subculture, that had been festering underneath the surface of the manicured gardens of 80s and early 90s mainstream music. The album immediately confirms all of my preconceived notions, starting with light orchestral music fading in slowly underneath a calm conversation between a father and young child about the nature of regret, before declaring "SATAN SATAN SATAN!". I love it. Sonically, it pulls influence from all over the map. You can hear shades of Sabbath, Frank Zappa, Jefferson Airplane, and the early building blocks of Nirvana's vibe. There's a nuttiness to everything, with layers of pitch-shifting, echo, and delay creating textures and psychedelic atmosphere. Sometimes these effects supplement a song, or sometimes they are the song, forming surreal noise collages that feel closer to experimentation than music. A good deal of the record is actually quite melodic at its core though, and somehow quite easy to listen to. "Sweat Loaf" is the standout track by a distance, but songs like "Pittsburgh to Lebanon" and "Human Cannonball" are also catchy tunes, rather than just crazy concepts or subversive satire. But there are still lots of songs on the album that are more interested in an idea than in music, whether that's making fun of speed metal, playing reversed recordings of cows, or just throwing an insane collection of noise together. The vibe here is irreverence, the theme is noise. It's not something you'd play in public without having to explain yourself, and if you did have to explain yourself, be sure to tell them... SATAN SATAN SATAN!!!!
Ok, definitely pushes on being edgy just to be edgy a bit, but there's some real talent in there too.
Well, talk about smack in the face when this came up! The cover, the name, as I tried to twist my mind to make it make sense, god knows what the music has in store!! I’ll start by saying I much prefer this to some of the predictable 4/4, monotonous albums that have been on this list. I mean it is pretty crazy and dissonant, but there is something in me that gives a nod to it all the same! And just when you think you’ve heard it all, they come in with Kuntz 😂 don’t really know how to sum this up, probably won’t listen again, but love the originality
This was OK. Not spectactular.
On the one hand, this wasn't terrible. On the other hand, only one or two tracks stood out as being particularly interesting, which isn't a high rate.
Album 27 Top 3 favorites off the album: The O-Men, Human Cannonball, Kuntz On today's episode of, "WHAT IN THE ALBUM TITLE?!" : this. For years, I have failed to actually listen to the Butthole Surfers. Every time I hit my favorite record store at home, I see the section for their music and I have a good snicker. Today is my day. Let me say this: I cannot wait to make my exclusively country-loving brother listen to this by adding it to the playlist I am constructing for him. I swear to God, I don't know if he will ever let me recommend music again. It will be so, so worth it. I've gotta be honest: I'm not sure I'll ever let me recommend music again, either. I'm torn between giving this a low rating because my ears kind of hurt, and giving it a middle rating because it's something different that I wouldn't call enjoyable but I appreciated it for what it was. And then Human Cannonball came on. That was basically the whole listening experience: tracks that made me question it all, punctuated by one banger that renewed my will to carry on listening. It's the music equivalent of watching Bottoms, except Bottoms sucked. What the hell was going on with The O-Men? I couldn't stop listening. I actually had fun! This was a noisy album, and I'm not mad about it. I'm surprised to be giving this the rating I am. Weirdly enough, I actually will listen to this again, and am adding songs to my playlist to ward off The Horrors as we speak... write.
3.3/5
51/1089 3.322* I wish I had 10% of the creativity these guys do. When listenig to a butthole surfers album you know you're going to get something weird and creative, you just never know how weird or creative, simply due to the band name. I enjoyed it, not enough for 4 stars but definitely something I'd introduce to someone who is specifically looking for a wild discovery. Kuntz is often misunderstood. It's about a bunch of women's genitalia and not the obvious thing you'd think it would be. Hits....kuntz, 22 going on 23
Ok
64/100 - i liked the chaos and not knowing what would come next but its definitely not my favorite album.
Now THIS is a way to start an album, certainly got my attention.
wish i liked it more. seems cool and innovative
Very experimental but I like it
If you're even remotely familiar with the BSs, you kind of know what to expect. That being said, this is one of their weaker works, but at least they're willing to take chances. 2.5/5
3.1 2x cool early album for me, nothing too memorable SATAN SATAN SATAN haha
I get it. Sweet Loaf is a parody of Sweet Leaf! This is certainly a lo-fi sonic exploration. I get why some listeners wouldn't like this, but I feel my life is richer having listened to these Butthole Surfers! I like the raw, experimental and unpolished sounds.
Cool.
How does one review a BS album? It defies description. Truly one of the most oddball records I've ever heard, and I say that with great respect. This one is one wild bad trip of an album. 32 minutes of the weirdest shit they could come up with. Some of it it crazy making and some is funny and some is actually pretty damned catchy. Glad I heard it before I died
Eccentric. Noisy. Weird. I kind of get why people don't like this. I wouldn't listen to it all the time but it's better than most of the pap that commercial radio force feeds us.
i thought butthole surfers was goofy dad rock bro
I like the idea of the Butthole Surfers (Texas transgressive smartass dada racket) more than I actually like listening to the Butthole Surfers (Texas transgressive smartass dada racket). There was a point in my 20s where their noisier side meant a lot to me, but now Sweat Loaf and Human Cannonball are more my speed.
I was expecting to hate this but I didn’t. Sure it’s weird, overly experimental and somehow still relies on other people’s work / spoofing but idk it worked for me. Fave bits: Human cannonball, 22 going on 23
I saw the global average rating and prepared myself for the worst and this just… isn’t. Like I’m confused what the issue is that people have with it. I think this is interesting. The use of noise and unconventional structure and dynamics works as a whole package here. Plus it samples Sweet Leaf one of my favorite Sabbath songs straight off rip. Favorite songs were Sweet Load, Human Cannonball, and Kuntz.
Я очень давно слушал альбом, не помню, о чем он. Но там были какие-то издёвки, ухмылки, нестандартные моменты. На один раз интересный опыт.
It's bad. But also good.
Definitely interesting, almost a 4
uncontrived weird brilliance
Hot sludge. Fun at first but got pretty old by the end. Are the Butthole Surfers so prolific they needed multiple inclusions on this list?!?
Like a classic fuzzy bluesy garage psych record played on a dying record player through a crapped out broken speaker and hit by a bolt of lightning. Dumb as bricks and sounds like shit, a dirt bag acid trip masterpiece of manic sludge.
Drug cocktail. If Hunter S. Thompson was a music. How does a person even score this LOL?!
Álbum cru e interessante. Boa experiência. Celest x Versekeys Ultra-Sense Planet.
One of the most unique albums I've ever heard. Surely also very influential, but doesn't do much for me. Human Cannonball rocks though. 5/10
Growing up in Dallas in the 80s it was near impossible to not have these guys come up in routine conversation about the music scene in Texas. Knowing how nuts they were, at times it was hard to wrap my head around what they were doing. And even more hard to wrap my head around lead singer Gibby Hanes being the son of famed children’s show character Mr. Peppermint. I seem to recall seeing them in ‘87 at the long defunct Theatre Gallery in Dallas, only to walk away more stunned. It’s hard to describe a Surfers show, but I recall bombastic drumming, fire, naked girls and films showing circumcisions. I think. That alone merits a slight uptick in rating here.
Incredibly weird. How on God’s green earth did this record get put out? “…And the opener will be a bunged up cover of Sweet Leaf, but call it Sweet Loaf”. Hahahah what in the heck?! Despite its astounding weirdness and general existence, it’s definitely memorable. Quick aside - what an awful album title. And still, would I rather listen to this than anything I gave a 2*? Kinda… yeah. At least they tried something. Kudos to weird art.
My favorite Surfers album. It started when I heard Sweat Loaf for the first time. How could I not love this album?! “ the funny thing about regret is that it's better to regret something you have done than to regret something that you haven't done” Words of wisdom to live by! Having said that, listening to this album 40 years later wasn’t the same experience ;)
Transgressive avant-punk that, if you allow their trolling nature as a core philosophy, contains some innovative depth. A sonic hodge-podge comparable to something like Can, this is on the continuum of anti-establishment music from The V.U., the 13th Floor Elevators and all of that 60's garage psychedelia through Pere Ubu, Circle Jerks, Black Flag, and so on. More intelligent than you might think (or want) a band called Butthole Surfers to be.
This album seems to have all the ingredients for one I would hate- weird tonal shifts, bizarrely aggressive lyrics, spurts of incoherent noise... and yet, for reasons I can't really explain, it just all sort of *works* for me somehow. I'm not saying it's great, I don't think it is, but it was fascinating enough to cancel out some of the more off-putting elements.
I sometimes really like the butthole surfers in small doses, and sometimes I can't really take them. Today I'm about in the middle.
Good album. Kinda noisy but fun.
They had fun with this. Not my cup of tea, but energetic, well produced, and a good sense of fun in the record.
This was fun
Despite the juvenalia that is integral to this album and which really put me off, it was more interesting musically than I thought it would be.
Fun, crazy, and interesting, but not something I'd listen to again
These guys were obliviously try to be different and boy oh boy did they succeed. "It's better to regret doing something then regretting not doing anything at all"
Insanely creative. For me, this has re-listen value ONLY for the case when I need a music reset, and need to be reminded how strange music can be.
This is a band I know of but have never really heard if that makes sense. I definitely enjoyed this album and will likely listen to more of their catalog. I’m going to say 3+ stars for now.
I have a soft spot for the surfers..... I just can't help it. Discordant / fuzztastic guitars: Check! Obtuse or outlandish lyrics: check! ethereal overlays: check! mixing in loops or samples: check! sometime sounds like they just got tired of playing and stop mid-song and just said fuck it its done: check! For some reason things that might annoy me from other bands -- I just like with the Surfers...... I don't know why. All that being said. This album isn't my favorite from them....... but still better than many.
Noisey!
Interesting. 3 stat
This album is scary! I think listening to it in a Nyquil-induced stupor was the correct choice lol. I’m able to appreciate what this album is trying to do without it ramping up my anxiety. Plus it’s Halloween week — fun!
Bonkers
I…I didn’t hate this. What’s happening to me??? *melts*
2.8 Feels like an album I'd have pretended to love when I was 16 but in truth not really getting it. Felt like a cross between Mr Bungles first two albums, which have their good and and bad moments. First track is actually pretty decent, but then it quickly goes off the rails with Avant Garde nonsense. The blurb made me think I was getting something more polished, especially given which bands took inspiration from this. Not enough to keep me interested and coming back, so I'll let this one rest in piece. Can see why it's on the list, but not for me.
I think it would need further listens. Which it isn't getting.
Actually kind of enjoyable? Hard rock punk, provocative, anarchical, but with an undercurrent of joy. Imagine it playing in a hipster thrift shop or of course a record store.
Kinda odd music eh
First time listening to these folks.
Þetta var skrítið, en ágætt.
Áhugavert og alls konar.
Very shrill. Quite funny in places. Overall, however, the album is too exhausting for me to want to listen to it again. 3/5
It’s gross and purile and groovy and weirdly psychedelic and i’m kind of into it tbh
If you know about this band, then I don’t think you’d be surprised by it. From an acid trip state of mind I truly get it. Interesting listen
It's good. I like the raw power. But it doesn't belong with albums that I consider 4 stars. I can see why this might be part of this project, but it's still just 3 stars.
Just a little annoying, mostly good.
Not sure why this is anywhere near the 20 worst rated albums. It's more interesting than lots of the middle of the road albums. It's weird and chaotic and a bit uncomfortable in places but doesn't merit the low global rating. Favourite track was Human Cannonball.
Better than I expected! Weird but fun and surprisingly precise. 3.3
Aimless and rudderless with loads of imagination. Absence of melody makes it difficult to approach, but there are glimmers of great. Wish the production / mix was more coherent.
Decent
Weird, but I didn't hate it. I like their sound.
2,75
Not what I expected. Standout track: Human Cannonball
Differnet, but good.
Actually kind of enjoy the experimental noise. But when they integrate it with conventional songs they don’t quite hit the same as other bands that make atonal noise work like Nirvana
I…kinda liked this?! I enjoyed the bass, the thrash, the proto death metal growl on one song, and the various stupid hijinks that ensue.
how the hell do you rate an album like this?? it was certainly different and it did make me think. i see the vision, parts of it were actually good-as-in-well-made. i'm never listening to this again.
I want what they were smoking when they made this. Wait actually no I don't
Some interesting and challenging ideas on show here Familiarity: 2 – Unknown album Songs I would actively choose to listen to: 2 - Little What can I remember the next day?: 2 - Little Best song: Sweat Loaf
I feel like this would have really hit as a teen but Human Cannonball is still a banger.
Weird as fuck.
I know the BS are super influential in indie rock, but this is the first time that I have listened that I really enjoyed. Not the best album, but has its moments. Love that the Orbital sample comes from the first song. 3.5/5
As nightmarish and gross as this is in places, you do have to give them props for doing something so completely different from the vast majority of music. Band name is a 10/10 as well.
Messy
I thought I would dislike this more than I did, but it was not bad. Caveat is that I was not paying a lick of attention to the lyrics.
Perfectly ok experimental rock. I thought it was gonna be worse becouse of the low ratings here. But it was actually ok if you are in the mood for weird stuff. But there's plenty of more unsufferable music on this list. This is not one of those for me.
hoo-wee, this album sure is something. distorted, tape-bending techniques, slimy and disturbing mixing and all sorts of sounds tickling your eardrums makes for an album that doesn't sound like any other rock album you've heard before. it sounds like audio coming from deep within satan's bowels. it's groundbreaking and it's such a departure from other rock bands, but there's only so much i can realistically enjoy when a big majority of the album is pure, demonic-sounding noise. as much as i'd want to rank this album higher, i just don't think i'm the right demographic for this kind of music.
Very experimental hard rock punk. Inflenced by balck sabbath, and other important bands from other genres including cumbia,,jazz, punk, etc... Well though of algum that is surpisingly great with great musicians and music producers
This was fine, but I imagine they've had better output. Kind of a 2.5 for me, but bumping because I liked what I heard. Probably wouldn't return to it though.
Looking good, Rod. Looking good.
There is something cool about how anti everything this album is and how loud they’re trying to be and how punk it is but the songs are usually suffering from it. The best modern comparison I can make is 100 Gecs where they’re doing similar things attitude wise but their songs slap and are really well written instead. Feelin a 3.
If you dont take it seriously, its pretty fun Musically its a good album. The vocals/lyrics are kinda bad
Interesting, yet disturbing. 😳
I enjoyed this album, I think The O-men is pretty good and overall I just like tbe crazy vibes of this record, I also liked kuntz a lot, I want to listen to more records of this band
Think I had a copy of this back when, and today I have no idea why. Thought the cover was cool? To piss off my elders? Or prove to my then girlfriend I really was a mean and moody guy, like honest? Today I have no idea why. It’s noisy, it does have a vibe but I don’t really need to hear it again but I have and it was only just over half an hour. 3 Star, it’s not the worst, in fact not the worst this week.
Loud. Bombastic. Offensive. Brilliant. Love this album.
This album is the musical equivalent of touching an electric fence to see how much it hurts. It serves as a learning experience, all future endeavours feel less concerning after hearing this. The band and the album title also made me laugh out loud.
Memorable band name I heard years ago, first time listening to them. Ambient keyboards, melodic guitar, noise, a huge riff, numerous tempo changes, and shouty maniacal chaos. And that's all in track 1, an amazing start! There are tracks in here that are almost unlistenable, challenging themselves and the listener. It would be easy to right it off as crap but there's way too much going on for that to be true. 'Kuntz' is, well, err, amazing. And unexpected! '22 Going On 23' reminds me of 'Little Fluffy Clouds' with the taped voices as a hook into the track and then to close, but instead of being light it's dark and sad, nightmarish instead of dreamlike, and it works, especially with the amazing guitar work and heavy bass. 'Human Canonball' is straight up post punk and really good. Nirvana, Sonic Youth and The Pixies must surely have been listening to them in the 80s. I doubt I'll listen to the whole album again but I'll check out more of their stuff.
This was fine, a little odd. Experimental alt rock and the most offensive thing was the album art. Human Cannonball was the best track
Intriguing and confusing! Liked this creative expression of what sound is and the pushing of the boundaries of that sound to the extreme
I was only familiar with the first song but the rest of the album was very similar to that song. It’s wild, purposely rough around the edges and crass. The guitar work is amazing, but some of the lyrics are unlistenable.
I wish this had a little more structure. I love the weirdness. But just a little more song structure would make this really great.
First "noise" album which I actually didn't mind listening to. Was nothing more than fine but it was at least tolerable
Interesting album that covers many different genres in a Butthole surfersian way. Might have to listen this one again to figure out what the heck just happened. Sounds like a really good live band too.
Naming and cover art are so awful it must act as a sort of protective spell, to ward off the casuals but also to provide insurance for when the band's more questionable experiments fall flat. I actually rather enjoyed (most of) my listen through this. Quite experimental; a couple of dreadful duffers but some interesting and quite funny moments. Didn't know this was the origin of the sample for Orbital's Satan.
I remember liking a song by these guys - it's not on here and everything that is, is total junk. Fail. Truly a one-hit-wonder in the real sense.
i dig the energy, but i dont feel like coming back to it any time soon
This album is evidence that the majority going through this challenge like dad rock only. These drums are thumping and the guitars are blaring. It’s fucking weird, but it’s a solid rock and roll album.
This album is so much. I kind of love it and kind of hate it.
It's like Frank Zappa reincarnated for the 80's and 90's (I realize Zappa was still around then but...). It's weird but it's not awful. At least not all the time. Sweet Loaf is great, as is Human Cannonball. I really enjoyed Kuntz for some reason but then I guess that's not them playing, just messing with the recording of the original. Pittsburgh to Lebanon and The O-Men are solid - real grungy. Hay is really interesting once you know it is 22 Going on 23 backwards and sped up. I always thought they were a alt rock band with a provocative name that couldn't quite break through (with Pepper their only big single). But now I can see they weren't trying to break through. Or be alt rock. It's not quite a 3 for me but not a 2 either. I'll round up for the ingenuity of it all.
Another on my list of albums that I don't enjoy, but am glad exist. You can tell how much fun they had making this. I'll always have a soft spot for oddball noise music. Never going to listen to it again!
6/10 An absolute masterclass of a shitpost. While not all the songs are tolerable, this album was not as bad as I thought it was going to be going into it. I enjoyed some of the tracks, while not being able to stand others. One thing is to say that this album is an experience may even needing a revisit in the future.
I'm not a fan of this album. I have one Surfer album that has a few songs I dig. But not this one. It will get a 3, but out of respect for their experimentation, not out of my digging the album.
zwei bis drei
Whatever was first thought up when one looks at the cover of Locust Abortion Technician may very well have been an apt one. A sheer sense of dread looms, then the music starts playing and the mind plays ping-pong with itself over whether or not it's worth of its merit and reputation. One thing is this: listen to this at least once and you'll begin to understand it all. Favorites: Sweat Loaf, Graveyard, Pittsburgh to Lebanon, Human Cannonball, U.S.S.A., The O-Men, Kuntz, Graveyard.
I went in expecting garbage and came out spiritually concussed.
Good album always enjoy listening to butthole surfers
Not for me.
Weird and wonderful is all you can say about this
This being one of the lowest rated albums overall on this site, I braced myself for the worst. But you know what? This isn’t even that bad. And at times, I even enjoyed it. Especially Sweat Loaf, Graveyard (the second one) and 22 Going On 23. I found myself laughing at The O-Men and Kuntz: those songs are just ridiculous. This was certainly and experience, but probably not something I’ll return to.
many of these tracks wete quite fun, especially sweat loaf and the o-men. sweat loaf, however, would benefit from the intro skit being its own track. i dont want to have to listen to it every time i hear the song. 3.5
I had to listen a second time to better understand what the heck I was listening to. With the repeated listen, I approached it, not necessarily listening to "songs", but creative, artsy, abstracty noise. It made more sense, the instrumentation are weird, industrial and abrasive, but at the same time interesting, varied and strangely satisfying. The structured songs were generally boring, but Human Cannonball is strong. At times it felt more like parody and several songs reminded me of the Dead Milkmen song, "The Fez" (which isn't too far off): There's a time for taking And a time for giving But ripping off the Butthole Surfers Is how we make our living (ha ha ha ha)
Noisy and pretty fun
3.3
Very very uhhhh interesting. At its best there’s some sick ass noise rock that reminds me of swans or even some shoegaze. Love it for its variety and risks, but there are definitely some weird parts that I cringe at. Could definitely see myself liking it (or disliking it) more on more listens
Know very little outside of Pepper but genuinely enjoyed this and will go back and explore the back catalogue.
Not bad
As a bit of a Noise Rock aficianado, I was a little let down by this one. It's still good and deserves to be on this list, but it's not nearly as noisy or chaotic as I typically like my releases in the genre, except in the sonic experiments and tape elements which while cool didn't cohere all the time. It undoubtedly has its moments though, like the incredible closer. Overall, solid.
Didn't really do much for me, but I didn't hate it.
Bits were ok, bit too abstract for me in places
Fun and weird proto-grunge.
Gibby Haynes is awesome and a lot of the Surfers output is great. I get this, but it’s just too much noise to be really enjoyed.
They've made better albums
Always liked these guys
C'était n'importe quoi mais c'était rigolo. Parfois un poil trop n'importe quoi quand même.
First of all, I gotta say that the album name and the band name is fucked up in the most amazing way. Love it. Second of all, this is so noisy that it becomes interesting. I really have no idea why, but it intrigued me. It's not that good though.
Band name matches exactly how I thought they'd sound. I can make an equivalent modern day comparison, this is almost like Clown Core but in the 80s. Clown Core, but make it rock instead of jazz.
I don’t hate this. I don’t love it either. It’s another of those weird ones that is all about the performance I would imagine. Plus my son used to love the band name and run about shouting it when he was a toddler, so there’s that
I’ve never listened to much by this band. It’s pretty fun and playful which I appreciate. The O-Men is enjoyable. I like the fever-dream aspect of it. 22 Going On 23 is pretty haunting.
I like it. What's not to like? Custard - good. Jam - good. Meat - GOOD!
I'm not sure it's their best but it's pretty good.
Am I the dog, and am I laughing with them, or are they laughing at me? Because I'm dangerously close to unironically liking this. The actual songs here are great, with Human Cannonball being the standout. Because it's a normal song. I doubt anyone is listening to this because Hay or U.S.S.A is their favourite ever song. Quite a big fan of the nonsense gibberish vocals on the O-men, the, what feels to me, tom waits impression on Pittsburgh to Lebanon, and the heavily processed Thai track Kuntz. I never thought I would be giving this a good review, but if I was able to, I would give this a 7. It will be getting a 3, because I thought not every track was worthwhile, but overall I'm glad I listened to this at least once in my life. Even though it makes me uncomfortable as well, I like the album cover.
A ride through a metal-themed funhouse while being chased by clowns wielding electric guitars. Pretty good stuff. Ironically though, I do wish this album had been even weirder and more experimental, and less leaning on the metal spoofing.
This is some Killer Klowns from outer space ass music, not bad honestly, compared to other abrasive albums on this list idk why this is one of the lower rated ones. It’s fun, a solid thumbs up from me
Less transgressive than I expected given the title. That makes it more appealing but less interesting.
I wish they’d focus on more actual songs like Human Cannonball but I enjoyed more than I didn’t.
I’ve tried but I don’t think I can listen to all of this. Too experimental even for me. Not that it’s bad, just can’t cope with it!
An alright album, not really my style.
remember that scene in high fidelity where two green-haired teens start a shitty band called the kinky wizards and their music blows john cusack's mind to the point that he reconsiders his entire life? this album sounds like the kinky wizards.
It was good, but not in an enjoyable way
I know this band never really heard much of their stuff other than what is on the radio. very intersting songs so far. was not really aware they were all over the place. Not for me. Kind of an odd one. I get why though it is on this list.
Heard of these guys but don't think I've ever listened to them. I didn't mind it, probably would've been more my thing as a teenager. Felt like they were trying a bit hard to be edgy and weird at times. Kinda hoped I might enjoy it more than I did given it's listed as rock, grunge, punk. Human cannonball was the standout track... Sounds like pennywise. Lose the weird stuff and the score would be higher 3
This one's pretty wild. I like these guys, but I wasn't really feeling this one. 2.5 stars.
Good album!
I just don't know, man. I just don't know.
A bit hectic for me - I want to like it more than I do.
Luke was excited when I got this one and I have to say I enjoyed it a lot more than expected to for a band who chose the put the word abortion in the title. The first song in particular was fun. By the end I was a bit tired of it. But it was creative and a bop
I can safely say I was not expecting the butthole surfers to make this list. Knew them from guitar hero. Not bad! Weird, but not bad!
Some easy listening for a Saturday night. Also truly horrifying
Better than I expected.
Chaotic and kinda fun. Best head headphones.
Needed some time to decide the rating here. On the one side I really like the album. Partly really good music although one feels, that they are really playing around and having fun. So my first intention was a "4". But when I compared it to other 4 I had given finally decided on a 3.
Great name and way better than I expected.
Weird shit but ok.
Definitely one of the strangest albums I've listened to. But it's almost good? It threads a very weird needle of incomprehensible, uncomfortable, and also engaging to listen to that I wouldn't have thought possible. Not sure if it's something I'd come back to, but definitely worth a listen. Top tracks: Human Cannonball, Graveyard (Pt. 2), 22 Going On 23
This album was an...experience. Was it pleasant? Unsure. It's a low 3/5 at best, because it's largely so odd and lacking in melody or structure, but it's still interesting.
great lot of noise with a sense of humour
I like weird shit. Can you blame me?
Okay, some of these I didn't actually mind. Will I ever seek this out again? I honestly do not know. But.... I have had worse listening experiences.
Odd
Weird and wild ride of an album. Not something to put on everyday but a nice little treat.
This sounds exactly like how it is supposed to. Personal enjoyment: 3/5 Relevance to this list: 4/5
A laugh, a lark, a lot of nonsense. Butthole Surfers have never taken their music seriously once, so why start now? Locust Abortion Technician is extremely good at just barely qualifying as music and stifling laughter while doing so. I think something like 22 Going On 23 shows the band's potential if they were to invest in making slightly atonal sludge metal, really compelling stuff.
They certainly surfed my butthole and I can't say I hated it, didn't love it, but didn't hate it.
Heavier than I expected but pretty good for a one-time listen (ignoring the band's name). And it's got a nice cover.
Made sense as background to Retro Bowl
Ret skørt og mere end lidt dumt, men også catchy og der er nogen kæmpe bangers på (Human Cannonball!!!!!)
Интересно :))
This band has been around for a while but I never really got into them. The first impression is kind of like jokey / experimental which hasn't always been my thing. While listening I'm really looking for the stuff that I should like, like I'm looking for cool bass tones, I'm looking for a nice drumbeat, because I'm starting from a place of "I don't really love this, let me sit through it until I hear some elements that I enjoy". I do however really love "Kuntz". That's what I'm hoping for when I come across an experimental music act. Make a somewhat normal sounding song (yet different than the rest of the album?) then throw in a sample of a Thai singer in there and then explode the production by glitching layered delays that pan to each ear asynchronously. Wow! That's cool! Give me more of that for something truly experimental and fresh. The last song really stopped me in my tracks. Part of me is like "this is some brutal art and it feels heavy in many good ways", another is like "this poor woman talking about being abused and taken advantage of- did she agree to this recording being on a song, or is she being taken advantage of again somehow?". I'm kind of perplexed and while I don't think music should shy away from heavy topics, I find it interesting that this is the last song on this album, and this is what we are left with. It's even more perplexing when we look back to the start of the album, only 28 minutes prior, and remember that it started with a jokey Black Sabbath cover. It's quite the contrast between first impression and last impression. 3/5. I didn't dislike it, but I wanted it to be different at several times. Great album cover- very eerie feeling.
Not good, but not bad. On the list of chaotic mess and occasional cacophony it ranks pretty high, with few enjoyable track, slightly reminding me early Primus. But whole album like that is just too painful to listen to. Good effort though.
Influential to music I don’t really like. Highlights here and there for sure, and I can appreciate the artistry, but it’s not for me.
Jag uppskattade att få höra skivan för den var väldigt udda men jag kommer nog inte att lyssna på den igen
Hey, it’s the Butthole Surfers. Always knew this group's name, but probably only heard their music a couple times growing up, and I don’t even remember those songs. Diving into this album was a mixed bag. The first half of the album was kind of meh, but the later half had some good tracks that at least ended things on more of a high note. Probably won’t seek out more of their stuff, but finally can say I at least know more than their name now.
3.75
Kinda fucks
some really cool riffs and hooky songs punctuated with extremely grating moments. bonus points for a band name I've always found to be eye rollingly annoying!
Weird, fun, not something I’ll return to often, but it’s not a chore relistening to it. Best tracks: Kuntz, The O-men and Human Cannonball
