Album Summary

Sound Affects is the fifth studio album by English rock band the Jam. The album was released on 28 November 1980 by Polydor Records. It is the only Jam album to be co-produced by the band themselves, and contains the only album track co-written by the entire band, "Music for the Last Couple".The cover art is a pastiche of the artwork used on various Sound Effects records produced by the BBC during the 1970s. This was not bad. Pretty repetitive songs tho. He also sounded a fair bit like Bowie, but they aren't as good haha

Some of this was pretty entertaining. 3.5

10/21/26. Unfortunately a forgettable album, didn't stand out in any way.

Postpunk ja, aber mir zu wenig

Pleasantly surprised. I remember being pretty underwhelmed by the last The Jam album I got in this list, but this was fresh. Some great baselines and it remains interesting throughout. Can see myself popping this on for a fun listen in future. Fav tracks: Set The House Ablaze, Boy About Town

Enjoyed this one, would recommend.

Damn good record from the Jam. This one doesn't feel quite as distinctly British as All Mod Cons, which might be why I like this one a little more. But if Paul Weller says this is the best Jam record, who am I to differ? Actually, the more I listen to this, the more I'm swaying my own vote from a high 4 to a low 5. Every track is great.

As you can see, I own this on CD but I'm not entirely sure if I've ever listened to it as, aside from "That's Entertainment", nothing felt overly familiar on this listen. Anyway, I much prefer this to All Mod Cons. The songwriting here is sharp and ambitious, leaning into post punk textures, angular guitars and even Beatles-esque harmonies at times. I think this does a great job of illustrating how punk transitioned and evolved into the early 80s. It's undoubtedly still indebted to the "punk attitude" but it takes on a more expressive form, with some brilliantly tight drumming and melodic basslines propelling the songs. "Start" is a real standout through its driving energy and impressionable bass playing, whilst "That's Entertainment" paints a striking picture of the humdrum of working class British life, with Paul Weller doing a sterling job of finding beauty in the mundane. Some of the deeper cuts aren't quite on the same level of memorability but they're plenty enjoyable enough. Strong 4/5 and another I'd upgrade to vinyl.

This was not for me, and that's okay. Favourite Track(s): But I'm Different Now Least Favourite Track(s): Music For The Last Couple, Boy About Town, Scrape Away

Good in parts, very good in others.

about as generic as an album on this list can get. Boring and uninventive.

Vital 4.5

I quite like the vibe. Its kinda like a mixture of The Doors' and The Smiths' style. I liked the bass lines so much and the vocalist kinda sounded like Morrissey in some songs. Overall its a good album.

This was pretty good. Not sure I'd rush back but I certainly wouldn't grab the remote to turn it off. Nice.

A pretty average album overall. 3 stars or C.

tão anos 80!!!! uma vibe. gostei muito. consigo ouvir isso sendo tocado na trilha sonora da série morta stranger things.

Compared to other Brit pop / new wave bands on this list, I quite liked the energy this one brought to the table. Definitely got a more punk edge to it than the rest and I prefer it's use of grittier guitars and darker melodies. However, that wasn't really enough to push the score any higher than its peers. I will say though, "Set The House Ablaze" is a fantastic song and I would've loved it if more of the album leaned into that vibe!

this is a great album, I was familiar with just a couple of the songs and really enjoyed hearing the whole album.

Feeling very indifferent towards this album, its fine, nothing less than a 5/10, maybe a 6/10 on a very good day, really dont know why its on this countdown. The standouts keep it from dropping to a 2. Standouts are Pretty Green, Set The House Ablaze and Music for the Last couple.

Day 60 The funny thing about the reviews page is that the stuff that clicks for me is generic for someone else and vice versa. I had no knowledge of The Jam prior to this roll other than That's Entertainment, a phenomenal song might I add. This had the right amount of wit, social commentary and just general groove to uplift my evening. Now, I need to say something funny before I get ahead of myself. TOOL. Fav track: That's Entertainment

Very coherent sound

As some of the fire of the earlier records fades, Weller’s songwriting chops come to the fore.

Well produced. Good basslines. Tracks were quite repetitive

Setting Sons is one of my favorite albums by them, but this one is richer, less bare bones.

This is the beginning of Brit pop, forged from the British invasion bands (Beatles, Who, Kinks) and given a late 70's/early 80's veneer. So many great songs on here: "Pretty Green," "Start!," and their best song ever, "That's Entertainment." The band is tight and I especially love the bass playing of Bruce Foxton (who uses the same riff from "Taxman" on "Start!"). Paul Weller is one of the all time great songwriters and he has some great portraits of working class life like "Man in the Corner Shop." There's also a song about the ever-present dangers of fascism ("Set the House Ablaze"). Even better, the bonus tracks version has covers of the Beatles' "Rain" and "And Your Bird Can Sing" and the Kinks' "Dead End Street" and "Waterloo Sunset" that show how these guys picked up the mantle and carried it into the 80's.

Really from what ive heard of The Jam, these guys were the true link between 60s British invasion stuff and Britpop. Like they have songs here that would fit nicely on a Kinks album (Monday) and songs that would slot perfectly into a Supergrass record (Set the House Ablaze). That's Entertainment is a brilliant song, dealing with the same working class blues that Cocker would deal with on Common People. A super melodic and enjoyable pop record, Paul Weller rules

Good 80s record

I get why people into music like this would really enjoy this. For me and my personal taste its OK. Not really much more to say other than that. 3 stars

Skipped most of it, not very exiting

While it feels like there are a dime a dozen of these type of bands on this list and this one doesn't seem to be that much different, I do generally like this style of music. It just feel like its getting repetitive. Bass was good though.

This was a pretty good album, albeit a bit unremarkable. I think I've heard about a hundred similar albums to this one. It gets an indifferent 3 from me.

Fav: Monday, Set The House Ablaze L: That's Entertainment, Dream Time 3 "Start!" really sounds like "Taxman". There were splashes of talent and inspiration, but there weren't many. That being said it was easy to listen to. Cover: 2.5 Decent idea for a cover but I don't think it turned out that great. Name: 1 Album does not fit the name at all. Minecraft Parody: I Just Saw A Blaze (Set The House Ablaze)

idk, a jam W: that's entertainment L: 2.5/5

Listened to the whole thing like every album so far. But mentally I gave this a 3 and moved on after one song.

Ihan okei, hauskoja kikkailuja välillä. Mutta ei oikein omaan makuun osuva kokonaisuus.

Suhteellisen perus rokkilevy.

As mod music goes, Thw Jam are pretty much the peak. Angry, musical, and extremely British.

This might be a 4 on another day. But today I am not feeling the generic British Band vibe. 3 Boolean: null

solid album

This feels like the exact median of every album on this list. Some very British rock, not bad but not very memorable

This was a decent listen but didn’t get too excited.

Not sure on the Weller hype tbh. The single on this is good, but the rest fades into the background.

Incredible

I really enjoyed this and it will probably grow in my estimation--I had only heard That's Entertainment before and recently. When I heard it I wondered if the group would pop up on this list, haha.

I enjoy punk and new wave, and didn’t hate this combination here.. but I’m getting a bit sick of the UK oversaturation

I flipped back and forth on my feelings for this one throughout. I really appreciated what they were doing on Set This House Ablaze and the energy brought forth there. Some tracks were a little too fluffy for me like on Monday and Man In the Corner Shop. Other times there seemed to be a Brian Eno light worked into their style like on the final track which closed this album out strong. Overall more good than bad for me, decent listen. 3 stars

Not my kind of music. Instrumentals are pretty chill tho.

The beat got me going. The drumming was what stood out for me. I more listened to the sound/music in the past, so I took a look at the lyrics and I was impressed. “Set the House Ablaze” is fave.

Very 80s

This one takes me back to Brook Court in Stafford, student flats, and listening to records in a mate's place. Late 70s Mod style, with one of the greatest songs in "That's Entertainment".

This was pretty good if a bit forgettable. 6/10.

Great album, with several really well written songs apart from the 2 I already knew. Great bass playing, even if he did rob that one from the Beatles. Last track sounds like inspiration for U2 and The Police.

Extremely generic british rock. Listenable but nothing I'd recognize in the wild and nothing that stands out.

I find it amusing that a lot of the non-Brits seem quite dismissive of the band as yet another British band undeservingly taking a spot on the list. These guys are absolutely adored over here and for good reason. "That's Entertainment" is a song that would get any British dad turnt the fuck up. This is punk music that decided it is actually cool to like the Beatles. "Start!" sounds like if "Taxman" had a baby with "Paperback Writer" and I'm very much here for that. Super melodic and catchy, you are going to know if this is for you or not after hearing a song or two.

This is just like every other boring thing on this boring list. 347 albums in and I'm still being smothered in this mediocre garbage.

Ok, nach mehrmaligem hören immer besser! Handgemachte, schnörkellose Songs! Eine der wenigen Entdeckungen in der Liste für mich!

Takes The Beatles, The Kinks, The Who and The Hollies (and even a touch of Pink Floyd, when the fly from UmmaGumma makes a cameo) and filters them all through the anger of Thatcherite Britain. Very much a product of its time and place, but still, extremely good for what it is.

Everything about this record is incredibly entertaining. EXCELLENT bass lines. Drums are killer. Songs are catchy. Vocals and guitar on point. Easy to love.

Some funky parts but ultimately nothing I'm really invested in

I'm familiar with The Jam's hits, but have never listened to a full album. Interestingly for me, it was the deep cut "Set the House Ablaze" that was my favorite. Solid overall, but the hits were some of the weakest of the album

Acceptable.

Ese bajo que marca el compás del disco, WOW. Rock clásico, me ha encantado. Me han recordado, lejanamente, a algunas canciones de The Clash. Canciones favoritas: Start!, Man In The Corner Shop

Never liked the Jam. Still don't. They get an occasional good song ("Absolute Beginners") but none of those are on this album. This is definitely in the "Paul Weller disappearing up his own ass" phase of the man's songwriting. Not sure if he ever recovered from that...

Good stuff. I love it when Brits sound like Brits.

I'm not a fan of this genre, and have now heard enough of it to be certain. It's going to take a pretty special band to convince me otherwise. This was not that band.

The kind of a band name and album cover I would’ve never given even a thought had it not been due to this list forcing me. And am I glad it did, because this is wonderful. Great songs and most of all, absolutely amazing production. Love the guitar tone on this album so much. Was thinking of four stars ar first, but I had to give it another listen and fucking hell, let’s make it five, why not. Been getting a lot of shite on this list lately so this was quite a pleasant surprise.

Pretty forgetable

I rated *All Mod Cons* just a little higher than this one. I've come to. The conclusion that even though I like their music, "The Jam" ain't my jam. I can see why of the punk turned post-punk band, The Clash reign. Great one-two-three punch highlights on side one "But I'm Different Now", "Set The House Ablaze", and "Start!". But the rest of the album was fine, but nothing near the level of that trio of songs. (7.6) ★★★½

Probably my favourite Jam album. 4 stars

Probably my favorite album by the Jam. Retains a lot of their pub rock sound while bringing in some post-punk/new wave elements. "That's Entertainment" is one of their best songs, but also deeper cuts like "Set the House Ablaze" and "Man in the Corner Shop", and "Monday" are pretty great. 4 stars.

All Mod Cons is ever so slightly better, this is more post-punk inspired with a few dry, harsh, unmusical choices between some of the songs but it’s still mostly great songs and with ultra-classic humdingers bang in the centre of the record - That’s Entertainment and Taxman by The Beatles. “A rusty tractor and a screaming farmer A woodland fire and burnt up tree stumps Badger traps and a bloodhound howling Fly tipping and some wriggling poisoned worms That’s badgertainment That’s badgertainment That’s badgertainment That’s badgertainment La la la la la la la la la”

There are no bad tracks on this album but it also never really takes off. "Music For the Last Couple" and "Boy About Town" are the stand-outs.

(Decent to strong 8/10) Oh The Jam, I love their bass tone. Every song I hear from them is fantastic. This album is great, everything I love about this era of post-punk. Sounds just like a direct descendant of GoF's Entertainment album. Speaking of, funny enough "That's Entertainment" is probably one of the weaker tracks on this album for me, even thought it's still really good. Anyways, hell yeah The Jam forever!

That's Entertainment and Start! do the heavy lifting here. The rest is pleasant. The repetition gets annoying.

Second album proposé après ‘All Mod Cons’ que je n’avais pas trop apprécié (2/5 - manque d’originalité). Pareil ici. Beau son de basse mais pas très original. =>2/5

I found that quite boring and generic. I didn’t really like or really dislike anything just kind of meh

vintage rock!

I didn’t like this very much. Glad it was pretty short. 4/10

a bit dad music and a bit samey after a while. Liked the bass sounds

Bass was thick in this.

🎧This is fine, it’s pretty unremarkable throughout but not bad by any means

Nothing wrong with this: a couple of big radio hits and works brilliantly as a coherent, sharp and complete album.

super fun listen

2.5 rounded up

This was fine. I generally prefer Paul Weller’s other band, The Style Council.

Very good

Not super memorable, but good listen in general

It was fine

This album did not do anything for me. I found it pretty forgettable.

I have strong opinions on jam, but no opinions on The Jam.

Fun and funky. I’ve said it before, and I’ll probably say it again; I’m a sucker for a good walking bass line. The Jam has that in spades, so I was immediately endeared. With elements of pre-punk, British Invasion, and surfer rock, The Jam speaks to a youthful optimism and rambunctiousness. I certainly enjoyed this album, and hope you did too. 4/5.

The Jam is one of the most British bands there is. Listening to "That's Entertainment" transports me straight back to that era—and mind you, I didn't even live through the 80s and have never even been to England, but I imagine that’s exactly what it feels like. 5 stars.

I've been on a streak of bang average bands this week and it is really starting to annoy me. This for me is just another very generic band that I will not listen to again after this. It's not even that it's particularly bad. It's just I really don't have anything of note to say about this, and it's pretty much background music for me. I start to like it more halfway through. But it's just really not my thing. Fav Track: Start!
