The Stone Roses
The Stone RosesI was in Australia, so missed experiencing "Manchester", but caught up with this a couple of years later. One of the best debut albums ever.

Excellent album to start the 1001 off. From the bluesy beginning of Wheels of Confusion, through the ballad of Changes, the famous Snowblind to Under the Sun, this is a fantastic album of classic 70s heavy metal, driving riffs, punchy bass and Ozzy in fine form.
A surprising debut at the time, coming out of Wham!. It stands the test of time. A great opener, followed by 9 more mature tracks, strings and horns backed-up by the 80s drum sound.
I knew the singles, but had never heard an album. Enjoyed this, electronic melodies over a simple drum pattern, interesting lyrics.
Wow. Fabulous guitar on the opening track. Followed by 25 minutes of solid funk.
NWOBHM band with a new singer, a more polished album than the predecessors. Twin guitars blasting away.
Genius.
Not my style of music. I can see how some people might like it, but it leaves me cold.
Never heard an album by this group. Very 60s. A couple of good songs, rest pretty decent.
new artist for me, liked it, funky, cool guitar and nice vocals.
Blues magic. Great playing. It does include that famous (overplayed !) song, but the rest are stone-cold classics.
A bunch of songs by a famous bloke. Didn't grab me.
not a fan of this type of music.
beautiful Americana, soaring harmonies, gentle playing, so relaxing
pretty decent grungy-pop
absolutely fabulous progressive 60s rock
a soul/jazz/pop classic break-up album, tremendous voice, not a difficult 2nd album at all ... so familiar with the singles, they seem to be on the radio a lot, after 20+ years
just too weird
has some moments, but not the kind of music I like
cool early 60s jazz/blues, can't fault it
this is variable, which is what happens when 4 writers/singers are in a band - some excellent songs, some quirky, some mediocre
Wonderful 50s jazz-blues singer
excellent mid 80s Glaswegian sounds, takes me back to those post-pub nights in Muswell Hill
nice 90s grunge
interesting Icelandic alternate music
No, didn't get on with this at all.
How have I not heard her before ? This is right up my street. Folk/Americana magic.
Oh yes, classic Aussie rock, can't beat it
back to Uni days with this one, still sounds great
surprisingly, never heard this, or any other Small Faces album before. Great example of late 60s London music.
The first Beatles album I bought with my own money. Full of great songs.
live jazz from 1957, nice
Odd, but strangely likeable
the best sound of any gig I saw at Newcastle City Hall in the olden days this is a great album
Classic album from the Metal Gods !
not my style of music, but it's a decent album
great early album from the legendary piano player
Sneeringly dismissed by me when it came out, this has 5 well-known singles and the rest are decent pop songs
disco bangers ! Nile Rodgers produced. Makes you want to get up and dance.
Sublime English folk-rock, from the 2nd of 3 albums they release in '69. Features the beautiful "Who Knows Where the Time Goes?".
tremendous record
Perfect power-pop
First time listen. Not bad, interesting.
First time listen again. Strange, but interesting.
An album with a few songs that have stood the test of time, but are far better live.
If you like this kind of thing, it;s probably good. Not my style at all.
shoegaze extravaganza, another band I'd not heard before, enjoyed it
90s rave, quite pleasant
Fabulous turn of the decade folk-rock
fabulous funk
interesting indie/country/jazz/americana
goth, shows promise, not as good as their next album
grunge/punk/rock spectacular that influenced so many
knew the name, but not the music - very cool jazz, trumpet/flugelhorn, sax, piano & drums, nice
decent debut, songs still get tons of airplay
interesting 50s drum & jazz
nice West Coast folk-rock, no outstanding tracks
re-recorded bunch of a cappella african songs, good, but not very exciting
first album from Dylan's backing band, folk/country/americana, some great tracks
okay mid-70s funky stuff, nothing wild & groovy though
I heard this a LOT in the late 70s, fab live album, Lazy really stands out for me
post-Free Boro singer Paul Rodgers in a pretty good blues/rock effort
a gentle album, with the fabulous Superstition the stand-out song
not my style, didn't like it at all
interesting piano-based jazz/blues, with a political cracker in H2Oblues
ordinary Neil Young 70s record
heard this a lot in Rozelle in 1989, nice soul/pop record
subdued indie beats, incredibly 15 years old now, but still a relaxing album
genius electro-pop saw them at Hammersmith Palais in 86, and the 40th anniversary of this LP at the Palladium - great shows
early 70s pop/rock, decent effort
So many great songs on this album, produced by Bowie, a glam-rock classic
do not like this kind of music
coming out of the punk scene, with a garage-band feel, great singles band, and really good live over the years
fantastic cool jazz featuring the well known Take Five.
average Brit Pop, the hit single Alright really stands out
synth-disco-pop fabulousness
a great pop album from the heady days at North Staff Poly
A difficult album, sadly, with a great band. The Weather Report version of In A Silent Way on 8:30, however, is much better.
a great return after 10 years
electric Dylan, with a complete banger to open
never heard of hime before this, enjoyed it, quite relaxing
60s garage-rock that sounds like it was recorded in a garage entertaining, but too many covers
another college throwback, classic 80s New Romantic synth/guitar album, great singles
it's okay, nothing really stands out, quite low-key
Not the Beck I'm used to (that being Jeff). Decent record, but not fantastic. Solid.
great Aussie indie music
I was in Australia, so missed experiencing "Manchester", but caught up with this a couple of years later. One of the best debut albums ever.
I liked this when it came out, and it still sounds good. Excellent return after the loss of Richie. 3 well-known songs, and the rest do not disappoint.
I played this album a lot when it came out. Good songs, and in interesting cover to finish,
full of great blues/rock/country songs, John Fogerty has such a distinctive voice
nice, jangly 60s music
classic LP, played this record a lot in the old days
cracking jazz, my piano version of A Train is nothing like this !
really nice gentle soul music, very relaxing - such a great voice
Riffs.
first time listen, really good mid-60s psychedelia
didn't grab me, not a fan of the vocals
