Popular Reviews

Doggystyle by Snoop Dogg

This has the makings of a 5 star hip hop album; great flow, fantastic production, very funky and great personality. However, similar to my feelings with The Chronic, the lyrics are just unapologetically disgusting, and can you really listen to rap without listening to the lyrics? They are, without a doubt, misogynistic and glorify the "gangsta" lifestyle. However, Dre and Snoop tried to spin it as a cautionary tale or whatever, which just laughable. There's no critique of that lifestyle or any sort of self consciousness whatsoever. I understand that gangsta rap was a necessary reaction to police brutality in LA, and that it was an important stepping stone for hip hop, etc. But that doesn't necessarily mean we have to endure it forever as a classic album.

Dig Your Own Hole by The Chemical Brothers

Where to begin with this one? Another formative album for me, so hard to judge objectively. Probably one of the first electronic records I got into as a teenager. This album, Daft Punk and Justice opened up a whole new world of music for me, even though I missed out on it the first time around (I think I was 6 when this album was released). The way the songs flow into each other is beautiful, even when they get abrasive. I especially love the last two songs, in spite of the weird lawnmower like grinding towards the end of Where Do I Begin and the possibly-too-obvious Beatles influences on The Private Psychedelic Reel.

For Your Pleasure by Roxy Music

This is a fantastic album. I can't believe I wrote it off when I first listened to it 10-15 years ago. I think I was put off by the first 2 songs. I still find those two a little dull, but from "Strictly Confidential" on, this album is almost perfect. Some really interesting sounds and melodies on here, inventive use of the synth and horns as well. I can see now why they were so influential; several of these songs sound almost 10 years before their time. From what I know of Roxy Music's singles, they did get a bit less interesting after Brian Eno left, but I'll definitely be giving their earlier stuff a second chance now.

Larks' Tongues In Aspic by King Crimson

Hadn't listened to the one at all, I only know the screaming man album. Really enjoyed it, it sounds like the birth of math rock!

Goodbye And Hello by Tim Buckley

Ah yes, Jeff Buckley's dad! I listened to this album years ago and didn't really get it. It'll be interesting to re-listen to it now considering my tastes have changed a good bit since then. Wow what a voice! Very impressive songwriting too. I love how different each of the songs are, enjoyed every minute of this.
