Album Summary
The Coral is the debut studio album by British rock band the Coral. It was released on 29 July 2002, through the Deltasonic record label. After finalising their line-up, the band had a residency at The Cavern Club, and were spotted and signed by Alan Willis of Deltasonic soon afterwards. Following the release of a single and an EP, and two UK tours, the band began recording their debut album. Sessions were held at Linford Manor Studios, Milton Keynes in early 2002, and were produced by the Lightning Seeds frontman Ian Broudie and the Coral. Described as a neo-psychedelia and folk rock album, frontman James Skelly's voice was compared to Eric Burdon of the Animals and Jim Morrison of the Doors.

Music made in the 2002 to sound like in the 60s, groundbreaking stuff it really is.
great band, I like them.
Its a nice little album with some interesting sounds, but it really doesn't move the needle much. It's much more mid than what it's trying to be.
¿Qué tocan?
perfect 3/5 album highlights: dreaming of you goodbye
This is not easy to comment on. They use so many references and citations, and sometimes nearly copy other musicians that it is difficult to to see their own contribution. At least, they did that brilliantly, and to their credit, they openly admit their "lending" and that they did it on purpose.
fine
The hit was a hit with very good reason. The rest of the album doesn’t quite scale the same heights. It’s not bad, but it’s all stuff I’ve heard before put together in newish ways.
fine
Almost awesome. A little disappointing. There are a lot of very cool elements going in this record - some vague psych influence, some solid songwriting, some 60sish kind of sounds and styling, Little bit of experimental song structure, some hooks. There's also a club banger! Altogether though, it feels a tiny bit too much like ordinary jangly indie of the time. Maybe it's my own prejudice mixed with the specific time when it was released.
ME GUSTO. como que varios me re gustaron.

3 - decent
Interesting elements that kept me engaged. Thought it had some good licks and catchy songs, might need to give it a other listen at some point. Rating: 7/10 (Good) Favorite Song: Dreaming of You
Spanish Man - 3/5 I Remember When - 3.5/5 Shadows Fall - 3/5 Dreaming of You - 3.5/5 Simon Diamond - 3/5 Goodbye - 3/5 Waiting for the Heartaches - 3/5 Skeleton Key - 3/5 Wildfire - 3/5 Bad Man - 3/5 Calendars and Clocks - 3/5 Regardless if this album came out in 2002 or 40 years earlier, I'd still have the same few thoughts. 1) This was not an album that I needed to hear before I died and 2) this is milquetoast indie/psychedelia. You would think that an improvement in music quality since when psychedelia took off that there would be some difference, but no, this sounds like it could have come out 40 years earlier and I would not be able to tell the difference. It's inoffensive at best and forgettable at worst. Overall: 3/5 Favorites: Dreaming of You
Certainly an interesting album. Did I need to listen to it before I die? IDK. The sound is derivative of a lot of music that I love. 60s and 70s psych, with a healthy mix of the blues and even of a bit of punk. Its fun, good indie. It kind of feels like a nod towards The Beatles or the Stones. Either way, I enjoyed this!
Needs pirates.
boring
solid start collapses into weirdness
Like it 3/5
The scouse contingent in the new emerging indie scene of the 2000s, I recall this group but was conscious that were unlikely to replicate the figures of the Britpop bunch. The sixties pastiche is almost instantaneously identifiable and their vocal harmonies are distinctive. Production by Ian Broudie gives them an early credibility and the singer deserves his comparisons with Eric Burdon and Jim Morrison. Thirteen albums later they still are in the game………. Probably due to being able to follow this decent debut.
Between the Wiki and the album art, I was expecting something with a strong hippie-rock vibe, and it started off somewhat in that direction until the lyrics came on. I guess it makes sense, they're influenced by a lot of cool retro stuff and they show it well, they do it justice, and these are artists... But it bores me? I don't feel it building anywhere other than pop production, and in that sense it's aged in an odd way. I've probably heard this album 4 more times than I really needed to, trying to make myself understand additional merit it might have. There's nothing there, it's just okay. 2.2/5

Vaca come back
Never heard of these guys kinda classic British rock from early 2000s....decent?
This is a thoroughly OK album. I did enjoy Dreaming of You and Wildfire. Also Bad Man. But overall they're just a regular 2000's indie rock band. ⭐⭐⭐
Nicest bunch of douchebags you could ever hope to meet.
Has all the bits to make a cool album but kinda fell flat.
Not bad not bad
This is ok. I like the retro sound of some of the songs but nothing stands out to me.
This is interesting in that it's an album that feels like it is from the late 60s, made in the early 2000s. Other than that, there's not much here that's exciting. It's music made well after it's prime, and not done in a super interesting way here. The playing is ok, and there's an element of "what would have happened if the Beach Boys went full psychedelic rock." Turns out, that answer isn't that great.
Not an awful album, just not a very exciting one. As a pastiche it should've been way hookier to work (think The Dukes of the Stratosphear). Then again, it doesn't bring in enough new or fresh to work as a good revival album either (think Tame Impala and such.) There are some nice moments on the album, but mostly I was bored.
OK, not great but listenable. They very clearly knew their audience and stayed true to their craft. I confess that a few of the loops were catchy.
Decent 60s retro british rock band without sounding like a copy of the bands of the era. A panacea of folk, psychedelia, merseybeat revival and some sea shanties thrown in for good measure. Cool band.
It gets a second star just for dreaming of you
I really enjoyed this at first, and I think the first two songs (Spanish Main and I Remember When) are the best on the album. After that, though, this devolves into a weird mix of rock-based polka and sea shanties? It's weird, and it's often not good. Not sure why it's on this list at all.
Ooh. This is a blast from the past. Natives of a uni housemates homeland (the Wirral) which is an interesting geographical feature. I didn't listen to the album at the time but I know the singles. ------------------------------ Jingly indie ska meets 60s psych. This feels like an album born from the Wirral. I've only been once but it felt kinda strange. Costal, isolated but with Liverpool a stones throw away. That geography seeps into their music with the Beatles and folk/shanty tunes crashing into early 00s indie. There's some serious jams on here and often the songs have a breakdown into a ska infused bop that makes me want to move. The second half kinda tapers out after skeleton key, but it's nice to have some dynamism in the music after Oasis yesterday. 4.5* (May round up?)
Was OK but not ground breaking
Pleasant enough indy pop with a couple of good tunes.
I feel like it could have been quite good, but most of it just annoyed me
It’s an interesting sound but it does feel like something that was made in the 70s, not the 2000s
The best psychedelic, klesmer spaghetti western indie rock album on the list. I’ve always had a soft spot for this. Songs that go everywhere the long way round. Often with multiple songs in about 30 seconds. Real pop hooks with a twist

You time travel to the 17th century to give electric guitars and hard drugs to pirates.
Incredible
Great
Much better than I expected. ★★★
Lads
Kinda raw rock
Pretty ok album early 2000s album nothing crazy but decent
I liked The Coral when they first came out - one of the more fun 'The' bands. Certainly more interesting than Killers, Hives, Franz Ferdinand, Kaiser, Arctic, Libertines etc etc, but several tiers lesser than The Music and The Delays. But which came first - Dreaming Of You or the Bully Videogame soundtrack? It's a question which has plagued mankind since the dawn of time. While we may never find an answer, what remains true is that both are certified bangers.
Yeahhhh I don’t know I couldn’t get behind this one. I can’t tell exactly what the goal of this album is or the point of it for that matter
Super fun mix of sounds and genres.
Enjoyability: 4/5 - would listen often Production: 5/5 - love the psychadelic aspect of it and can tell they really experimented and enjoyed the process - also really like the spanish taste in wildfire Songs liked: (6/11) x 5 Cohesion: 4/5 - everything does flow into eachother really well Songwriting: 4.5/5 - very story-telling and quite poetic
I was not familiar with this band or any of the songs on the album. It's very eclectic and a little all over the place. A few songs had a 60s or 70s psychedelic sound to them. While I found the album interesting because of it's different sounds, I can't say that I really loved any of the songs. Definitely not enough to save to my favorites playlist and not really enough to seek out anything else by this band. Another one that is a little puzzling as to how it made the list. Not bad to listen to, but nothing special.
Really doesn't sound like an album made in the 2000's, which can be either good or bad, depending on what your criteria are.
Another surprise that I enjoyed! interesting blend if genres- alt rock meets some older psychedelic/progressive sound. Overall- 3.5/5
There's a lot of different stuff going on, not sure if that's a sign of invention or of a mess.
Its alright, i found the first half of the album more fun than the second. Nothing i found particularly interesting on this one but some pretty nice background music.
Catchy hooks abound and every instrumental is very unique! Not a whole ton of songwriting depth. Highlights: "Spanish Main"
A couple of good bangers in there. Dreaming of you will always be a classic
Oh, yay, another random 2000s British indie rock album. For some reason, this is a weird mix of 1960s psychedelic rock and sea shanties-two things that did not need to be mixed. The album is easily one of the worst things I've heard in recent memory, with incredibly annoying songs full of terrible lyrics and grating dynamics. There are very few redeemable songs on this album, and most of it is just straight up awful. Why is this on the list? This album is ranked #11 of 16 albums for 2002 globally. Other 2002 albums rated by me: Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots(2/16)-5 Sea Change(6/16)-2 Highly Evolved(11/16)-2 A Little Deeper(15/16)-2 Justified(16/16)-2
This is what Captain Jack Sparrow listens to while he wobbles around on the deck of the Black Pearl (I mean that as a compliment)
Dreaming Of You is an outright classic and one of those songs I always forget about that blows me away when it comes on. Unfortunately I think it sets a bar too high for the rest of the album to live up to. It’s a shame as the rest of the album would be interesting enough with a distinctive throwback feel but I found myself wanting to go back and listen to that one single. Most of this album is 3/5 for me, but that track alone lets me round this up.
This album just kinda comes and goes. I listened to it three times because it’s short enough. Nothing here really sticks with me which is strange because I like this kind of music. I like the doo-woo inspired melodies on Dreaming Of You. Some of this just felt repetitive.
Över lag helt ok, men vissa låtar spårar ur något. Dreaming of you är riktigt bra.
This is one of those "holy shit I never expected that" albums. Yes, this is a fun, fun album. Not for everyone, but what a great ride!!
terrible
Cartoonishly bad. An interesting sub type of album on this list is “albums that came out under ten years before the first edition of the book”. An impossible task, predicting which relatively new albums will have any sort of staying power, but I think Robert Dimery might be especially bad at it. Like who the frick is The Coral, this is so bad lol
I did not have high hopes, knowing as I did the era and genre. I was sadly right: The Coral have 'Dreaming of You', which is catchy and fun, then they have everything else. Musically uninteresting and uninspiring, I wonder sometimes whether some time has to pass before evaluating music so as to avoid being caught up in the hype when the band is topping the charts and all over the radio stations. All but one track on here is unmemorable.
The Doors and the Strokes had a baby that was childhood best friends with Nick Cave. A pretty surprising mixture that leaves me feeling a little less than satisfied with the final result. It's cool, just nothing very special to me.
simultaneously the most interesting/generic indie rock i've heard? Shades of current arctic monkeys weird era, some man man/king khan, even those old 2000's indie rock bands.
Hadn’t remembered this band, barring a track off a Lego Rock Band game. It was a treat and reminded me not to judge an album by its cover.
Uninspired 2000s indie drivel
7/10
This did nothing for me. If I want carnival vibes I go for Tom Waits, this is nowhere near.
Quirky but enjoyable, in a slightly sea shanty type way.
This was cool. Some real different stuff from dreaming of you, which was the only track I already knew, but a lot of it slapped. And in various different ways!
It was good.
I forgot I even listened. Totally forgettable
A funk rock album
Like a more tame version of Mr. Bungle, and I'm not sure what the point of that is.
Better than Oasis
Decent poprock. Favourites: Dreaming Of You, I Remember When
This was interesting. The musical styles were eclectic and jumped around. It warrants another listen!
I can’t hate it, because that would mean it had some sort of impact on me. The beigest of beige music.
what the fuck was that
Was going to give it a 3 but I can't say I got average enjoyment out of it.
Pretty good indie, I'm surprised I hadn't heard it before.
This is not that bad but it genuinely has no place on a list like this.
I guess this album sold like crazy in the UK, but I'm not sure how this constitutes being one of the 1001 albums one MUST listen to before they die. I feel like there are plenty of rock albums that came out in bloody 2002 that would be more worth my time. Largely forgettable, very disappointed with this one.
Boringggg. I really thought this was dull. I wouldn’t listen to this again, it didn’t do anything for me, and felt unfresh
Just like a bit meh, feels reheated. Maybe it was exciting in 2002 for someone to bring psych rock back but it doesn't do anything interesting for me just sounds like a random assortment of songs thrown together.
Revisiting this weird little album made me really happy this morning. As is often the case I struggle to understand the aggressively negative reviews. To me this is a fun album that sounded very different to everything else at the time (I don't think any of us asked for sea shanties), but has enough pop hooks and heartfelt lyrics to prevent it from being weird for the sake of differentness. I didn't keep up with the band after their first 3 albums, but this has got me tempted to look into what subsequent albums are well liked by their fans.
The Coral are here to remind you that psychedelia is as much a British preoccupation as anyone's. Unfortunately in their desire to bring something back from the past their retro folk-and-psych-tinged garage rock 'n' roll inclinations do too much drawing from old forms and too little inventing of new ones. The songs are well-performed. Very competent! Nicely produced. Very tailored! And yet, it's all a little too bland, complacent, and tired. This album is easily one star less in a constellation of bands from the era that were all a bit too preoccupied with the past.
Unpretentious rock album with different flavours. But nothing really lives up to ”dreaming of you” which is the only track I’d heard before.
Another pleasant surprise. 3.5 rounded up.
Oh no. This looks so irrelevant. Is it British? Is it British?✔️ Does it belong on the list?〰️❌ How do I feel?🤷♀️ The musicianship is good! But… idk. I think I’m glad I heard it. Like Klaxons. Without this project no way I ever would. But this album would not be on MY list of 1001 albums to hear before you die. 3 Boolean: 🤔
I still regularly listen to Dreaming of You, but I’d never listened to this album. At least now I know I wasn’t missing anything.
