Album Summary

I See You is the third studio album by English indie pop band the xx. It was released on 13 January 2017 by the Young Turks record label. It was the band's first album in more than four years, following 2012's Coexist. The xx began recording I See You in 2014 at Marfa Recording Co. in Marfa, Texas, and were assisted by producer Rodaidh McDonald. According to the band, they had a more progressive, wide-ranging musical concept in mind, compared to their previous two albums. Jamie xx, the band's multi-instrumentalist and producer, said the album's sound and aesthetic were influenced by his 2015 club-influenced solo recording, In Colour. I See You was released to widespread critical acclaim, with many reviewers finding its music less insular than the xx's previous recordings. It became the band's second number-one album in the United Kingdom and an international top-ten chart success. Four singles were released to promote the album, beginning with "On Hold", while the xx embarked on the European I See You Tour and subsequent concerts in the Americas.

Man, I didn't like their other album very much so I was very disappointed to see this one pop up today. Am I insane for thinking this shouldn't be anywhere near this book? If the debut lined up the entire 2010s alt-pop slop run, this was just another nail in the coffin. Like milk and white bread. Frustratingly neutral.

If the Room was music but I actually didn’t like it. Yeah, I don’t really get this. The vocalists are ass, instrumentals boring, and nothing really interesting or new happening that I couldn’t get from anywhere else better. Why is it on this list?

Oh, this is nice. I've never heard this band before. And the internet tells me their first two albums are even better? I'm looking forward to hearing them. Too soon to tell whether this one rates a high 3 or tips over into a 4, but I'll be listening to it more in the future either way.

Nothing to write or anywhere else about.

Good stuff! The wiki said that this was meant to be a bigger or less insular project in comparison with their other albums. Tbh it sounds very similar to their first two albums. I love those albums so it's fine with me

Well that was boring.

I was a big fan of the first two albums, and for whatever reason hadn’t listened to the third. What I know about their music is that they don’t click on a first listen. This could potentially grow to a 4 or 5 star album if I spend enough time with it. As of right now it is doesn’t measure up to the earlier stuff, and surprisingly it’s more sleepy and dreary. I had a tough time staying awake on this listen.

Pretty mellow indie pop stuff. Doesn't excite me, but doesn't put me off either. 3.0

Pretty bland and monotonous.

i don't know how i felt. probably their weakest album but still very good in places

i love the xx, but during a festival set i saw them perform this summer, one of my friends was BEGGING for us to leave the stage and find something more exciting. i feel more empathy for the haters now. regardless, i think it’s a little redundant to have both of their albums on this list.

Not as good as their debut album but still a great album. Atmosphere and melodies.

It all sounded a bit the same...

MKAYYYY this is the most recent album I've gotten, omg i'm excited on hold? good soup WAIT MILLIE BOBBY BROWN? (lmao this was I dare you and it's not even from the album) Okay so the only ones I liked were not even from this album but I think I'll give them a 2

I was hoping this would be at least slightly more palatable than their debut, but it manages to sound even worse. Their first album at least had some sort of personality, all that's left here are a bunch of flavourless, flaccid tunes that I forgot I listened to the moment they ended.

I had to look back in my reviews to see if I had gotten an album from this group before and the answer was yes although I don't remember anything about it so I was able to come into this album fresh. The album starts out strong and at one point I thought I was going to rate it higher than the first one I got. However, it gets VERY one note towards the back end and one track seemed to blend into another. Just like the first xx album I got, this one is not bad but its not memorable and I probably won't listen to it again after today. 3/5

Indie rock, dream pop, alternative dance.

Best Track - "On Hold"

On Hold stands out of course, but the rest of the album is pretty forgettable, if well composed and produced

Im always excited whenever I get to hear something I am not familiar with but lets be honest, most of the time on this project it turns out to be terrible. THIS is the exception. I like everything about this. Instrumentation/programming are not only interesting but catchy as hell. And the vocals.... If it were just the guy singing it might get old after a while but when you throw in the female vocals it really lights up both of them. I ended up adding a bunch of this to my liked songs playlist. Im not going to go out seeking to purchase this but if I see it when Im out at the record store its going home with me without hesitation. Easy 4 stars.

2.5. I don't hate it but this isn't really my thing

When you want your background music to come with indie cred.

Well, I suppose this was inevitable. Giving my first 1 star was something I was wasn't looking forward to, and with several songs I fully expected it to go to dodging it and landing at 2 I was hoping it would take some more time still. On the plus side I've given four 5 stars to album by the time my first 1 star appeared, which feels like a victory. What I have learned from this album is that I prefer an album that I think "I don't enjoy this" to an album I think "I am incapable of possessing an opinion on this". You may as well have a view on rainwater, or sunlight, immutable facts of the world. Albums I have previously ranked low are albums I don't get, I never see myself plucking a song from their track listing and going back to, but that I know is for an audience, that there are people out there who would look at the album and have an opinion entirely different to my own. I know there are people out there who have opinions on this album, I've seen their reviews and seen that 3 stars is the most common rating this album has, so people surely have opinions on it, but for the life of me I can't understand how. I listened to this album on my commute less than 24 hours ago, it is the same commute I take every working day, with minimal distractions. On paper then, this album should have had my undivided attention. Yet looking at the track listing again I can point out only one or two songs where I can remember a lyric or motif. How do occupy my mind for nearly an hour and leave the best part of a minute in there? To me this album is like Lo-Fi; it washes over you without leaving anything behind, something not there to be focused on but to fill the space, a pleasant occupant to prevent something more engaging from sitting there. There's nothing wrong with that, but people use Lo-Fi as a tool. Have you ever heard anyone say their favourite song is a Lo-Fi track? This album feels like Lo-Fi with a budget and chart placements. These 1001 (and a bit) slots are contested, this is the first album I cannot fathom how it was deemed worthy of one.

I remember The xx having some songs getting radio play when my kids were really young, but this is definitely my first listen to an album's worth of material. I was listening to this while driving at night with my wife. And this felt like the perfect soundtrack for that drive -- soft, understated and intimate. At times the minimalism is too understated and left me wanting for more, most especially in the closing track. The highpoints of this album had the more lush and immersive production like On Hold and I Dare You. I think had this album balanced more in that direction with its production, it would have been an easy five for me.

I was surprised to recognize the opener from FIFA 18, that made me feel like time is really flying by. This is a pretty cool indie record that is understated and well-produced. I have never had much interest in this style but this made me appreciate it more, certainly. The middle is a bit of a drag, with a stretch of tracks I struggled to get into. 1 listen Favorite Tracks: Say Something Loving, Dangerous, I Dare You

I remember finding their song Intro years ago and still love it. This album didn't really hit for me despite multiple playthroughs.

A few nice songs in here but overall not outstanding

Very enjoyable. Great atmospheric music. So far so good with their albums

Nice sound. Easy to listen to.

I was excited when I saw this album, as I hadent really listened to the XX in years. Found myself enjoying it, but it really didnt hit quite as hard as their debut album. Still decent though

Bland, formulaic, boring.

On Hold is decent. I still like their sound. Not sure a place on this list is justified.

Pretty good indie band album

My god I hated this. Corny boring nothing music

Outside of on hold, I didn’t really like it. Just kind of boring to be honest.

Utter dog pizz. Doesn’t belong on list.

Tv show music

I would have expected The xx’s debut to be on this list (yes, I can see from other reviews that the debut is on the list). I love The xx, but there’s a reason I never gave this album much of a go in 2017. It’s competently average. Yes, listen to their debut. I See You isn’t vital.

Not too bad.

Could never get into their earlier stuff but this is decent actually

A few decent tunes, not near as good as xx

Overrated and non offensive

Ehhhhhhhhhh, it's just bland. I enjoyed some songs, Dangerous is fine, so is Hold On (or whatever it's called I literally can't remember, but the one where Jamie is carrying the song with some heavy sampling), and it's like...it's atmospheric but it's not memorable like an Aphex Twin type of record. And the vocals are just not doing it for me, they're very minimal and drab and I don't think the 2 vocalists have all that much chemistry. It's just fine, but why is this on here? Was it the hype at the time? Cause I'd rather recommend the fuckin' 1975 album that came out this same year and it's just as mid but at least it's more memorable. Idk where this came from, but whatever. It's one huge whatever/5. They're lucky I didn't absolutely hate it because I would've given it a 1, but I really think you do NOT have to hear this before you die. This is a beautiful cover for your vinyl collection and not much else.

You know, I really like the album that "Intro" is on, but this one veered a bit too pop for my liking.

the xx are very 6 music. They're fine, it's like the hipsters are listening to something else when they lose their minds. I like Romy's voice, his less so. more background music. short.

Surprisingly better than I thought it would be. I had only knew the singles from the album. A full album listen through is warranted to fully appreciate the xx.

Teški užas, baš teški. Neslušljivo. 1/5, 1/10

Interesting and passionate

This was so boring!

So fucking boring. Just crap

And now you don't

Boring album!

I liked this, particularly the music and production Vocals were hit and miss for me, but on the whole it was good

Definitely a chill album. I think the vocals are meant to be the strength of this album but in reality they are pretty bland. The spacey beats were nice though. I appreciated the tempo change in "On Hold" which just left me wishing the whole album sounded like that. Overall, this album was okay. Forgettable at worst and mildy interesting at best.

Nice textures and imaginative sound. There's a lot going on and i think it needs to really be appreicated with no distractions. Prefer the female vocalist at lot more to the guy. Was hoping it would go up a gear; quite slow and sad at times. Good one to add to the collection though. Favourite tracks: Say Something Loving, Performance, Replica, On Hold, Test Me

Perfectly serviceable 2010s indie/pop, but somewhat uninspired and forgettable.

I listened to this twice because I thought maybe I wasn't paying attention the first time. nope- I just don't like this! I don't understand how a modern album gets added to this list with such an underwhelming soundscape. Generic pop- not even fun electronica.

Not bad, kind of The National. I like how there’s a guy and a girl and sometimes they sing together and sometimes they sing solo

more bland indie pop, dull as a teaspoon. I listened to three tracks and gave up.

Man, I had no expectations and this still fell short. How did this make the list?

I like Jamie xx’s solo albums and, when he is more prominent in this, I like it. However, I have never particularly liked the vocalists and this lets it down for me (the fact that arguably their most popular song, Intro, doesn’t have vocals suggests I may not be the only one).

I do like the xx’s output, including their solo material but this album isn’t them at their best. I’ve always liked when they play with space whereas this something of a more traditional album that leans less on creating the breathing room that gives the vocals to really cut through. I suspect they had reached a creative dead end at this point at unfortunately I think it shows. Both ‘dangerous’, and ‘say something loving’ have good use of samples, and I’m fond of ‘a violent noise’ but the second half of the album is very forgettable.

Kind of a mixed bag for me, but there were several tracks that were okay enough to keep me from outright hating it.

Spreading positivity.

A pretty superfluous inclusion, not as iconic and just not as good as their debut. Though On Hold is probably the xx song I get the most repeat listening value from. On full listen I really find most of the rest of the tracks to be very tame. Its boring. 2.3/5

Das isch so langwiilig gsi

I had my first album by the xx (their debut album) very early on when I started this. I had to go back and look at my review, because I remember thinking that this was a band I'd heard of, but didn't know much about. I actually gave that first album a 5 out of 5 rating and talked about how much it reminded me of The Cure, which is why I think I liked it so much. So after listening to this album, I'm almost tempted to go back and listen to that first album again, because the band must have totally changed their sound. This album did not remind me of The Cure at all. In fact, it's very dance-y and almost electronic club music in part, and then slow and sort of boring songs in part. I didn't mind listening to it, but nothing on the album stood out for me and it's another album that I'm wondering how it made it on this list.

Good vibes but doesn’t excite me enough to be listened to repeatedly by me.

When this came out i had a 1 year old, so a lot passed me by including this. I'm a Jamie Xx fan and this was right up my street. A real mixture of styles and genre that reflect the lare night london scene, but as this is their third album it seems cohesive and mature. They know what they are by now and do it well.

There's some really good stuff on this one, but the whole album doesn't grab me like their earlier self titled album.

Na gut, ich hatte was anderes erwartet.

Wow, how far they've come from the first album, really amazing. You can really see the influence of Jamie xx's incredible DJing on this one, expanding the sound from the solitary notes employed so much on the first album.

Background music.

I See You feels almost colorless to me. There’s a certain elegance in its restraint, but after a while that restraint starts to feel more like emotional distance. The sparse arrangements, hushed vocals, and understated rhythms create the familiar xx atmosphere, yet the album rarely surprises or pulls me in deeply enough. It’s not a bad record by any means—it’s carefully made, atmospheric, and occasionally beautiful—but I found myself admiring it more than actually feeling it. The mood stays so consistent that, for me, it becomes a little monotonous and even slightly boring. Almost everything is in its right place, but there’s not enough contrast, tension, or messiness to give the songs much color. Maybe that cool, minimalist quality is exactly what makes I See You appealing to some listeners. For me, though, it left very little behind once the music stopped.

Just kinda boring. Like I'm sitting in my bedroom, staring at the ceiling while LED lights slowly change colors Favorite Songs: Replica, Test Me

Why this album? I see that xx is in here - correct answer. If there's going to be a second xx album (which, I mean, sure), why not Coexist? So, anyway, a mildly unique indie electronica album. This one is the album that came after the wave of popularity, and I don't hear anything new or anything that must be heard before you die.

This is one I enjoyed, but understand it wouldnt hit the same depending on the space and location for sure.

Some of the singing really irks me.

Not bad just very bland.

Mehh I mean for pop it’s alright I just don’t really get how it’s in this list

Liked this, not heard it before

One of the few new albums I have purchased in the past 10 years. Have listened to multiple times and really like it - so was surprised by all the negativity in the reviews. I know all the songs sort of sound the same and like their previous albums - but i like the vibe so if it aint broke .....

Their most commercial of their 3 albums. Why not pick XX as their album for this list? That was at least new and different (and better). This album has a couple of nice tunes but also says; lets sell more records than we previously did by going more commercial and overly produced. Their minimalism was the appeal and novelty.

Most of the songs were the same drum beat and vocal style

As bland as a three day old microwaved bolognese that’s been in the fridge a little too long

love the xx

1. dangerouz - 2 2. loving - 2 3. lipz - 1 4. noize - 2 5. performance - 2 6. replica - 1 7. brave - 1 8. hold - 1 9. dare - 1 10. tezt - 0

Better than I thought, I'll have to listen again

Refreshing and cool down tempo electronic indie rock with alternating male and female vocals. Very listenable and relaxing, perfect for a rainy day.

Sounded like cold porridge

Solid electro-indie album from the 2010's. Weird it's on this list.

No Just no. The female vocals are trash like what is going on? This Album is trash
