If you’ve ever wondered what it would sound like if David Bowie were half as talented and twice as pretentious, well, wonder no more.

It wasn’t bad… but it WAS boring, which in many ways is even worse.

Great album. Second only to Odelay in Beck’s catalog.

Side 1 was repetitive and boring. Side 2 was pretty good.

I’ll bet he thought “Andalucia, when can I see ya?” was a really clever line. He was wrong. 3 because it’s not actively bad, just boring.

Can’t sing. Can’t play. Can’t write. Can’t produce. They weren’t signed to a major label for a reason (or several).

My god what utter rubbish. If you’d like to hear some actually successful chamber pop, do yourself a favor and go listen to Rufus Wainwright’s “Want One”. This album, on the other hand, should be consigned to the dustbin of history.

I can’t decide it this is a mediocre example of music of its era and it aged badly or if it was bad 20 years ago. Given that there’s still music from this era that I listen to, I suspect it was always bad.

Had some good moments, more interesting than I expected from the other user reviews.

Interesting but too long

Sooooooo long

Finally, a 90s EDM album that doesn’t undermine itself by going on for 2 hours.

Held back a bit by the 80s production

At first I expected this to be boring garage rock but as the album progressed, I couldn’t have been more wrong. These guys pulled in unusual instrumentation (banjo!), unusual influences (German folk music - yodeling!), irreverent and sometimes humorous lyrics. They were off on their own and way ahead of their time.

Why is Steely Dan

I don’t usually like live rock albums, but the original LP of this one is tight. (The expanded editions you can find on streaming are overlong with too much banter.)

Has a good funky groove but it’s all very samey

I have to be in the right mood, but when I am, this one is absolutely killer. One of the greatest songwriters of the 20th century.

Was he whitewashing black artists? Yes. Were they often better? Yes. But this is still historically important and very listenable.

My Generation is a banger but there’s a lot of filler here.

Bowie’s production is good, but the lyrics are just so vapid I can’t do any better than a 3 here.

It starts strong but kind of trails off at the end.

I like Arcade Fire but this one doesn’t quite get there for me. Would do 3 1/2 if we had half stars.

Lyrically, it’s a 5. Musically, it’s a 3. We’ll split the difference at 4.

Honestly kinda boring? A couple bangers but lots of filler.

I’ve never been a big Elvis Costello fan and this didn’t change my mind.
