Jeff Buckley
3/5
Not bad, inoffensive. Had maybe one or two songs I'd keep, and maybe five that I didn't skip while listening and working. Grace, Mojo Pin, and Dream Brother I kept. I'll need to listen again to see if I'll really keep those. Maybe it'll reduce down to only Grace or maybe everything will be relegated to the b-list. 2.5/5 I think.
Iron Maiden
4/5
Very good background music. Iron Maiden is one of those bands where they have a very uniform sound, and this album is especially so. This makes for a consistent and smooth listening experience while trying to work and concentrate on something else. When listening to the songs with focus, they are catchy and I do like the sound of them, though they are all quite similar, which makes it harder to choose the x songs of their discography which are worth keeping. 4/5 stars.
Deep Purple
2/5
Generic and bland. Not offensive but not wonderful either, just middle of the road. highway star is pretty good for the occasional listen. Smoke on the water's riff is pretty legendary but the song itself is kinda eh. 2/5 stars.
Bob Dylan
2/5
alright I guess. I think it's just not my type of music, but it wasn't bad. I have no idea what was up with the clown sounds in highway 61 revisited. just why?? i grabbed three songs from the album which are pretty decent, but they'll probably go straight to the b-list. like a rolling stone, from a buick 6, ballad of a thin man). 2/5 stars.
Led Zeppelin
2/5
Eh, alright. I liked the strings in friends, but it didn't quite gel with the rest of the song. immigrant song is obviously the most famous of the songs on the album, and it's fine. I swear it stole all of the energy in the album, so you have one super high energy song and a bunch of sad deflated hacky sacks for the rest. I liked the vocals of that's the way, it's nice to see something different from led zeppelin. 2/5 stars.
Carole King
2/5
bland and generic for the most part. a natural woman was pretty good, I wouldn't want it in my playlist I don't think, but if someone was playing it out loud I don't think I'd want them to skip it. the rest was just kind of whatever though. 2/5 stars.
Stevie Wonder
2/5
Not my jam, but not bad. There are parts of too high and golden lady which I quite liked, it's just not an album I would listen to intentionally. It had a nice energy to it, and his voice in jesus children of america was quite nice. but yeah, it's nice music just not for me. 2/5 stars.
The Velvet Underground
2/5
Kind of slow and meandering in a way that didn't work for me. I liked the sound of the driving instruments in Venus in Furs, but not enough to add it I don't think. Femme Fatale isn't bad either, but more vocally than from the instruments. 2/5 stars.
Radiohead
3/5
An interesting sound, I vibed with it. It had a good driving beat and timing which I liked. Bodysnatchers captured the energy of this album well I think. I don't think I would need any of these songs, but they make good background music. I'll need to come back to this album though. 3/5 stars.
The Fall
2/5
I liked the main beat of Frightened, Rebellious Jukebox is also fun. Not a bad album tbh. Not my favourite but had a bit of energy which was cool. Good background music. 2.5/5 stars.
Kate Bush
3/5
Kate Bush has a good voice and she has some good songs. This is a solid album, nothing particularly stands out as a song I need to have from her but I did enjoy listening to it. 3/5 stars.
Stereo MC's
4/5
I really liked the sound and energy of this album. A lot of the songs had an interesting sound and were catchy, I'll grab the full album and see how I sort the songs between my a-list and b-list, but I definitely think this album fills in a niche that is currently lacking. I liked Fade Away and Connected, but honestly I like them all. Also vibed with the accents in this. 4.5 stars.
Eminem
4/5
Iconic. I loved the classics: Drips, The Way I Am, The Real Slim Shady, and Under the Influence. I didn't vibe with a lot of the other songs, but some of them had some good beats. I also appreciated the flow from listening to this album consecutively and how the skits flowed into the following songs thematically. A positive 3.5/5 stars.
Tracy Chapman
2/5
Sadly I did not vibe with this album. Fast Cars I loved, as legally obliged. Give Me One Reason wasn't bad either. But the rest of the album was dull, the lyrics were shallow and direct, and the songs sounded eh. Very underwhelming and boring. 2/5 stars.
Janelle Monáe
3/5
This is not my genre of music but I can really appreciate the breadth in what Janelle has done an amazing job at creating many unique and distinct sounding songs in this album. Do I like the songs? Eh, not so much, but I do appreciate them. I did like Come Alive (War of the Roses) a decent amount. 3/5 stars.
Bland and generic, this was a really dull album. stay with me was alright, definitely the best song on the album, but still a dime a dozen. 1/5 stars.
The Dave Brubeck Quartet
2/5
It was good background music, some of the tracks were quite nice. Kathy's Waltz had nice flow and embodied the sound of the album well. It made great concentration music and I would definitely return to it (though maybe skip the first track since it's much higher energy than the rest). But would I listen to it on its own? Eh, probably not.
Fred Neil
1/5
Fine but not my cup of tea. It had some cool sounds in it, but eh, nothing I would keep. 1/5 stars.
Suicide
2/5
It's okay, a little quiet for my liking. needs to add some wind to its sails I think, but it's fine. 2/5 stars.
Korn
2/5
Not my cup of tea, but fine. I wasn't expecting Ice Cube and I wasn't expecting them to rap. 2/5 stars.
Bill Evans Trio
1/5
actual genuine elevator music ):
1/5 stars.
LCD Soundsystem
4/5
This is a really unique album. It brings in a lot of instruments from beyond the genre to provide an interesting and dynamic sound. something something cowbells though. each song felt different and fresh. 4/5 stars.
CHIC
3/5
A fun like upper-vlass club sort of disco sound. Not my jam, but a fun deviation for 40 mins. Le freaks is fun obviously, but i loved the beat of chic freak and the rest of the album was pretty fun. 3/5 stars.
Duran Duran
2/5
not bad, just kind of generic pop. rio wasn't bad and lonely in your nightmare is pretty catchy. for what it is, it's pretty good. it's just not somethig i need. 2.5/5 stars.
Kelela
2/5
Eh, whatever. Not the fusion of genres and elevation I was hoping for; fairly straight-forward. A couple of te songs were catchy enough (blue light and onanon) but nothing show-stopping. 1.5/5 stars.
Joy Division
3/5
The music doesn't click for me which is a shame, but I really appreciate the technical side of things: the instruments sound good and the songs are interesting. the crispness of the drums, the sound of the guitar tracks, very nice indeed. 3/5 stars.
Wu-Tang Clan
3/5
I like the early 90s feeling of this album. it has a lot of the emotion from early rap with the beats of 90s rap which is really fun. i enjoyed this album quite a lot even if i wouldnt to download all of it. Bring da ruckus is good, so is da mystery of chessboxin and c.r.e.a.m. 3.5/5 stars.
John Martyn
1/5
this was a spectacularly boring album except for the last song: I'd Rather Be the Devil (Devil Got My Woman) which was pretty fun. but the rest... yikes. 1.5/5 stars.
The Doors
1/5
Pretty boring and slow imo. just not my thing unfortunately. 1.5/5 stars.
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
4/5
Big fan. Engaging and interesting songs. the lyrics are, as always with Nick Cave, great, and the songs themselves are really enjoyable to listen to (especially the first half of the album). Starting off with Papa Won't Leae You Henry is a killer start to the album. Really enjoyable. 4.5/5 stars.
Peter Gabriel
2/5
Eh, fine. Not my thing, so kid of boring, but not the worst. 2/5 stars.
Johnny Cash
1/5
Boring as shit, to put it simply. It's just an old man talk-crooning slowly and blandly. Every song sounds the same and I couldn't wait for this album to be over. 1/5 stars.
Joni Mitchell
1/5
Eh, boring. Not my jam. 1/5 stars.
John Cale
1/5
Kind of boring, not my thing. There was some varity between the songs but not enough for me to really enjoy this album. 1.5/5 stars.
Rod Stewart
2/5
There's some measure of variety within this album, but not a massive amount. Gasoline Alley was decent but not really my jam. An okay album. 2/5 stars.
Radiohead
2/5
Hm, this is the epitome of the Radiohead sound. No particular song stood out to me in this wall of lilting fuzzy Radiohead. Not bad, just not something I need. None of the songs had any interest factors which stood out to me, so like 2/5 stars.
U2
3/5
Not bad, an interesting album. Seems to have a lot of big hits on it. The Fly was cool as were a few other songs. A fine album just not overly for me I think. 2.5/5 stars.
Pixies
4/5
There's a few really great songs on here. The album started off really strong with Cecilia Ann, and there were a couple of other songs that were really fun. I liked the energy of the album and the sound. 4/5 stars.
Isaac Hayes
3/5
I love Walk on By and I didn't even realise that's what it was. Big win there, but felt very caught out by the 18 minute song I thought would be over and done with soon enough. It was not. 2.5/5 stars.
ABBA
2/5
inoffensive and bland. 2/5 stars.
Barry Adamson
3/5
An interesting album for sure. It seemed to have a cool mix of talent on it - Atticus Ross and Nick Cave. And going from It's Business as Usual to Miles is a hilarious contrast. I did like the former song, and a few of the others too. The variety and range on this album was really cool even if I didn't love every song on it. 3.5/5 stars.
Elbow
4/5
Not bad, I thought it was kind of generic and had a very consistent sound throughout the album the first listen, but I gave it a few more listens and there's some good songs in there for sure. I liked a bunch of songs on here - probably at a b-list level but there's gonna be a few a-lists in there. 4/5 stars.
Led Zeppelin
4/5
Actually really fantastic. I loved the sound and feel of this album so much. The guitar and drum work was amazing and each song was dynamic and interesting. Particularly loved Babe I'm Gonna Leave You, You Shook Me, and Dazed and Confused. 4.5/5 stars.
R.E.M.
4/5
Nightswimming is always a favourite of mine. This album has a good mix of songs with enough difference between them for a unique listening experience. Sweetness Follows is quite good, so is Drive and Try Not to Breathe. 3.5/5 stars.
Giant Sand
1/5
Really boring and obscenely long. 1/5 stars.
The Black Crowes
1/5
generic rock. it's whatever. 1/5 stars.
Simon & Garfunkel
2/5
I like El Condor Pasa (If I Could), but the rest isn't really my jam. Not bad, just not my thing. 2/5 stars.
Beck
2/5
Yeah, fine. Devils haircut was good enough to want to get permanently, but nothing else jumped out. I see what Beck is and I understand the niche he's filling, I just don't need much of it I think. 2.5/5 stars.
Jethro Tull
1/5
kind of just boring middle of the road. there is some interest factor in the variety of sound and instruments used but at the end of the day it's just not my thing. 1/5 stars
Jeru The Damaja
3/5
Some good ol' 90s rap. Can't go too wrong with this, always love the piano and more classical instruments contrasting with the rapping. Nothing in here I want but I respect it. 2.5/5 stars.
The Smashing Pumpkins
4/5
Loved the sound, not all were hits but there was enough in there that I really enjoyed. The kind of nasally singing voice was a vibe and the songs were varied enough to provide good variety. Though with an album this long, you'd hope so lol. 3.5/5 stars.
2/5
Kind of boring actually. I feel like there's better work from David Bowie that isn't this middle-of-the-road boring generic music. The best song on here was Five Years - it built up nicely, but still a B-list song. Having listened to this did help me find some other stuff which was better - Tin Machine amongst them. 2/5 stars.
Metallica
3/5
I liked the guitar at the end of To Live is To Die and I quite liked the sound of Eye of the Beholder. Not a bad album, just don't really need the rest I think. Some of the songs had some good driving sounds, but how much will that hold up on a casual listen? 2.5/5 stars.
SAULT
2/5
It was oddly preachy about being black in a really surface-level and cringy way? Very much felt like a thirteen year old's school project of uplifting cultures rather than anything meaningful or touching. Which is a shame because some of the songs were quite cool in their sound. I loved the drums in Bow and Wildfires was pretty good too. Don't Shoot Guns Down and a few other songs brought some interesting sounds together, I just hated the cringy reinforcements. Like genuinely painful to listen to and I definitely skipped a few songs which I try hard not to do during these reviews. 2/5 stars.
The War On Drugs
2/5
Inoffensive and catchy enough. Nothing bad, nothing great. Happy to listen to this as background music but probably wouldn't want to intentionally listen to this. 2.5/5 stars.
Deerhunter
2/5
Originally I thought this would be more diverse and interest than it turned out to be. Shame. Memory Boy is pretty catchy, but the album is pretty same-samey and generic. I swear there's actual duplicate songs in this. 2/5 stars.
David Bowie
4/5
I quite liked this album. I absolutely love Girl Loves Me, and Black Star was also really good, and so is Dollar Days. This is a dynamic and varied album that is an absolute delight to listen to and I enjoyed myself a lot with this one.
Pere Ubu
1/5
Bland and boring, a struggle to listen to. 1/5 stars,
Randy Newman
1/5
One cannot underestimate just how awful and terrible this album was. This was my first do not finish and I think I skipped half of the songs I did listen to. american (insult) 0/5 stars. gross.
The Police
4/5
This was a fantastic album. Each song was vibrant and unique and really enjoyable. The diversity in sound within the album (going from Mother to Miss Gradenko - hell yeah), but also the quality of what has been put together was fantastic. IMO the weakest song was Every Breath You Take - I grabbed all songs except that one. I really like Synchroncity I and Mother, and Murder By Numbers is really catchy. 4.5/5 stars.
Pulp
2/5
Eh it's fine. It feels like a lot of the albums I've listened to so far as part of this whole thing. Solidly fine and generic. 2.5/5 stars.
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
2/5
I like the guy's voice a lot it has a nice nasally and kinda weak sound, like a thread pulled tight. Big fan. Otherwise a generic and boring album, not my thing. 2/5 stars.
Isaac Hayes
2/5
This isn't my jam, but I appreciate it. It's dynamic, well-made and interesting. 2/5 stars.
4/5
Very, very good. Dynamic album with lots of different sounds and distinct songs. The techno sounds work well with the guitar work (which was fantastic this album), and the Muse singing style. Obsessed obsessed obsessed with the end of Map of the Problematique, definitely my favourite 45 seconds of the whole album. Did I love every song on the album? No, but there was enough in there for me to really enjoy myself. 4/5 stars.
The Stooges
2/5
Solidly whatever. just not my jam. 2/5 stars.
N.W.A.
3/5
I vibe with this. An OG for sure. Definitely worth listening to. The songs have nice variety in the instruments and the rapping. Do I love all of it? Nah, but I'd recommend people to listen to it. Straight Outta Compton and Fuck Tha Police are tried and true for sure. 3/5 stars.
Patti Smith
4/5
Big fan of this album, Patti's voice was really good, and the songs were catchy and enjoyable to listen to. The music was varied and well-crafted, and each song stood alone. The songs also didn't feel particularly dated for a 70s album. Land: Horses etc was a really good song. 4/5 stars.
Motörhead
2/5
Eh, kind of same-ish. Legally obliged to like Ace of Spades and Love Me Like a Reptile, but every song felt the same. So you really just need the one or two of them. Certainly not 27 of them. 2.5/5 stars.
Joe Ely
1/5
Box Cars was a really good song but I hated every other song so much. Genuinely suffered through this album. Not a fan at all. 1/5 stars.
Michael Kiwanuka
5/5
The flow of this album was absolutely fantastic. The 'refrains' between songs and the flow from each song to the next made this an amazing listening experience. Each song was interesting and unique, and an absolute delight to listen to. I love every song in this album and would insist on people listening to it in order - will def be checking out more of Michael's stuff. 5/5 stars.
Arctic Monkeys
4/5
I haven't really listened to Arctic Monkeys before, but this was not what I expected. I liked the accents so much, down with American accents lol. The guitar work was nice, as was the drums. There was a good use of like idk swells and lulls. I really like The View From the Afternoon. 3.5/5 stars.
Wilco
2/5
The first minute of the first song - Misunderstood - was absolutely amazing. It was dynamic and interesting, and then it kinda deflated. The rest of the song was alright, and then the rest of the album was another whatever album for me sadly. 2/5 stars.
Grateful Dead
1/5
Bleh, boring and not something I enjoyed listening to at all. 1/5 stars.
Machito
2/5
Cool music, I enjoyed listening to this. Not something I would want to download and listen to again, but I enjoyed it. Interesting sound. 2.5/5 stars.
Arcade Fire
2/5
Decent, not my thing. A little spineless to be honest, like it lacked some semblance of any grit or strength. The best we got was the final song (In the Backseat). There's been better by Arcade Fire that's for sure, but it might just be hard to measure up to the Elbow album which is also in the generated lists and the Arcade Fire song Afterlife. 2.5/5 stars
The Kinks
1/5
Not my jam, pretty boring. It feels dated, as one would expect. 1/5 stars.
Sam Cooke
2/5
Eh, not my jam. Enjoyable but just not for me. 2/5 stars.
JAY Z
2/5
I thought Jay Z did pop.... I guess he just does middle of the road rap. It's not offensive or particularly crappy, it's just whatever. No special interest factor to his songs sadly. 2/5 stars.
Sheryl Crow
2/5
It's fun and catchy and fluffy country music. It's not my thing, but it's enjoyable enough. I did quite enjoy We Do What We Can. 2/5 stars.
Billy Joel
2/5
Quite the lively sound for a set of songs so bland. 2/5 stars.
Stevie Wonder
2/5
Not bad - it felt almost muddy though? Every sound seemed to exist on the same layer or within the same similar range so there wasn't the clarity of sound that I would have liked to hear. I liked Another Star though. 2/5 stars.
Beastie Boys
3/5
An enjoyable album, don't need most of the songs in this album, but it's a fun one to just listen to. No need to skip any songs and don't mind listening a couple of times. Some good variety between the songs while still sounding distinctly Beastie Boys. 3/5 stars.
Roxy Music
2/5
A shame. I've always loved In Every Dream Home a Heartache and I thought they might have some similarly interesting music. Do the Strand is fun, but not at the same level of woah. 2/5 stars.
John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers
1/5
Not a fan. It's fine but really just not my style. 1/5 stars.
Willie Nelson
1/5
Massive snooze fest. 1/5 stars.
T. Rex
3/5
Not my jam, but an interesting album. Some good variety in the songs - Monolith in particular had some nice contrast in the singing. Decent. 2.5/5 stars.
Pet Shop Boys
4/5
I really enjoyed this - it was fine and dynamic with some really interesting sounds - the first song in particular One More Chance had some really interesting sounds in it. Rent was a pretty funny song too. An enjoyable album when you're in the mood for some 80s synth pop. 4/5 stars.
The Louvin Brothers
1/5
Kinda cool but not my thing at all. 1/5 stars.
Brian Wilson
1/5
Unbelievably bland, I hated this. 1/5 stars.
Lou Reed
3/5
A cool album, I quite liked Perfect Day, and Take a Walk on the Wild Side has a really nice vibe. This album has a lot of variety and I enjoyed listening to it. I'd definitely revisit this later. 2.5/5 stars.
The Who
3/5
I do quite like Christmas and there were quite a few other enjoyable songs in this album. Good background music for sure, and nowhere near as dated as I thought it would be. 3/5 stars.
Tina Turner
2/5
Not my jam but I do like What's Love Got to do with It, as everyone does. 2.5/5 stars.
Pere Ubu
1/5
Not my thing. 1/5 stars.
CHVRCHES
1/5
Ew, bland and generic. Did not finish this because it was so awful. 0/5 stars.
Michael Jackson
3/5
An interesting listen - I had always assumed his biggest songs were the ones parodied by Weird Al, so it was definitely weird seeing that Billie Jean is his most played song on spotify. A good song though. 2.5/5 stars.
Judas Priest
3/5
Driving sound and some interesting musical elements, but very much a sound of its time - do I need that much more of it? Metal Gods was cool. 2.5/5 stars.
OutKast
2/5
Having only heard Hey Ya this is definitely not what I was expecting. It's fine but nothing special. I kinda like the "break!" throughout the album. 2/5 stars.
Röyksopp
3/5
I really liked So Easy, and this album has encouraged me to go off and listen to the rest of this artist's work, so a big win in my books. The rest of the album was okay, not worth downloading but a fan change of pace and nice sound. 3/5 stars.
Nas
2/5
Eh, nothing special. Pretty same-same, nothing to set it apart from the rest of the rappers of this time in sound or lyrics. 2/5 stars.
Muddy Waters
2/5
Not my thing, but I appreciate it. 2/5 stars.
Blur
2/5
Not bad, I don't need it all. Unfortunately I think I background musiced this album and didn't pay proper attention, but yeah. 2.5/5 stars.
Jah Wobble's Invaders Of The Heart
4/5
Woah this was a cool album. There were some really interesting sounds on here! Relight the Flame felt kind of ska, and Erzulie was a lot more traditional. Really varied and cool. 4.5/5 stars.
The Charlatans
2/5
Eh just kind of boring to be honest. Alright background music, but nothing special. 2/5 stars.
The Sabres Of Paradise
2/5
It was fine but nothing special. It did nothing particularly of note. Inoffensive but I didn't need to listen to this. 2/5 stars.
Sufjan Stevens
2/5
If I was from a small town in America, gay, and currently a teenager I would love this. I'm none of these things. The best songs were the ones which had a stronger choir presence. Not the worst, just kind of same-ish. There's two whole songs on this album. Where's the variety in a 22 song album? Also so American... boring. 2/5 stars.
Bob Marley & The Wailers
2/5
Not bad. It's fun for sure and it's something different, but how much of this do I need? No Woman No Cry obviously. I really liked the ending of Them Belly Full (But We Hungry), but yeah. 2.5/5 stars.
Ramones
2/5
Big fan of the one singular song they have on this album. Everything else is just that song again. Okay, maybe a bit harsh - there's two songs on here. Not bad, but not the most amazing either. 2/5 stars.
Marilyn Manson
3/5
Big fan of The Beautiful People - an OG for me. But the rest of the album is okay. Marilyn Manson has a sound... and there's some variety but only enough for having maybe five or so of his songs. I don't know if the other four were in this album. Still enjoyed listening to it though. 3/5 stars.
Van Morrison
2/5
Some nice variety but not my jam. 2/5 stars.
Fats Domino
2/5
Cool, I liked one of the middle tracks and the one near the end with the whistling, but not enough to want. Decent though. 2.5/5 stars.
The Clash
3/5
Fun. Started off strong with London Calling. Don't think I need more of The Clash from this album at this point. Might give them a proper listen to later though. 2.5/5 stars.
T. Rex
3/5
A fun album. Not something I need but I enjoyed it. 3/5 stars.
3/5
This is a fun album. Really catchy. I don't know how much of these guys I need but it would be worth a check later I think. I like We're Desperate and Adult Books. 3/5 stars.
Goldfrapp
3/5
This is a fun album, that nice blend of pop and a more techno jazz sound. Not a-list material but there's plenty in there to like - certainly a few songs at least for the b-list. 3/5 stars.
Ray Charles
2/5
A nice smooth and slow album, but the bad audio recording really got to me. The random wind-like noises and distortion were really distracting and annoying. 2/5 stars.
Janis Joplin
4/5
Love me some Jackie Jormp-Jomp. In all seriousness I actually quite enjoyed this album, it was some nice country-pop fun. Give that woman another cigarette y'know? Move Over, Cry Baby, and My Baby were probably my favourites. 4/5 stars.
Flamin' Groovies
2/5
Not my thing, it's fine but just kind of generic. 2/5 stars.
Black Sabbath
2/5
Interesting sound, not what I expected but it also makes sense. Nothing stand out. 2/5 stars.
Sleater-Kinney
5/5
The songs are kind of same-ish in terms of their sound but I really enjoyed this album. The songs had a lot of energy and were fun, the women's vocals flowed well together and it filled a niche. Different to their one song I had prior to this (the future is here?) and still strange to think of the woman from portlandia. anyway... 4.5/5 stars.
Booker T. & The MG's
1/5
Dull. 1/5 stars.
Beastie Boys
2/5
It's Beastie Boys so every song sounds the same. This album actually had a softer sound to the usual Beastie Boys, but at the end of the day all 53 mins of this album felt like one single sound. Boring. 2/5 stars.
The Undertones
2/5
Solidly fine. Fun but nothing special. 2/5 stars.
1/5
Exceedingly boring. Nasally voice and very dull.
The Byrds
2/5
Have You Seen Her Face and CTA -102 are fun, but nothing I really need. 2/5 stars.
Marvin Gaye
2/5
Not my thing. 2/5 stars.
Bob Dylan
1/5
I fought for my life during this. This is my second Bob Dylan this week and I think this guy just doesn't work for me. 1/5 stars.
The Stone Roses
4/5
I quite like Made of Stone and Elizabeth My Dear. There's a decently large amount of variety in this album, but some of the songs can be a bit slow and dull. Still enjoyable on the whole, with some interesting sounds - especially in the guitar sphere. 3.5/5 stars.
Fela Kuti
5/5
I wasn't expecting to enjoy this as much as I did, but it was lively and interesting and new. Big fan! 4.5/5 stars.
Keith Jarrett
2/5
The context behind this album is interesting, but the album itself is solidly fine. I listened to it in its entirety and I don't ever need to do it again. 2/5 stars.
Fleet Foxes
5/5
I actually really love this - on the first listen I was like sure whatever, but now I've been looping it for days now. Big fan. Your Protector and Blue Ridge Mountains are probably my favourites, but I'm grabbing the whole lot. They're kind Mumford & Sons but more Christian. I vibe. Will check them out. 5/5 stars.
Boston
2/5
It's solidly fine, it's like every other 70s rock band. More Than A Feeling is catchy enough. 2/5 stars.
Saint Etienne
3/5
An interesting album - there was some nice like muggy spring day pop and some cool stuff that reminded me a bit of fatboy slim. I liked Only Love Can Break Your Heart and Like The Swallow. 3/5 stars.
A Tribe Called Quest
2/5
Solidly fine. Generic 90s rap, nothing to set it apart from everything else in that time. 2/5 stars.
Todd Rundgren
1/5
Boring and generic, not my speed. 1/5 stars
Nirvana
3/5
Heart-shaped box reigns supreme. TBH I don't really need the rest of this album, like it's fine but nothing super wowing. Dumb is kind of cool but nothing I'm super obsessed with. 2.5/5 stars.
Thelonious Monk
1/5
Not my thing. Just a bit boring unfortunately. 1/5 stars.
Tito Puente
2/5
Like it's fun, but I'm not exactly itching to listen to it. Nor am I going to go back. Hong Kong Mambo is pretty good, a little heavy on the marimbas but interesting. 2/5 stars.
The Yardbirds
3/5
Some okay stuff on here and some really cool stuff too. Lost Woman was high energy and catchy, Hot House of Omagarashid had some really interesting sides and a nice driving beat, and the guitar (?) in Over, Under, Sideways, Down (mono version) was really awesome. 2.5/5 stars.
Little Richard
2/5
Long Tall Sally is pretty catchy, but this album just ain't my jam unfortunately. It's cool but yeah. 2/5 stars.
The Mamas & The Papas
1/5
Kind of generic and boring. The guitar in Straight Shooter is good, but it's just kind of mid-level pop. 1/5 stars.
Miles Davis
1/5
Eh, fine. Just not my jam. 1/5 stars.
Ella Fitzgerald
2/5
She's got a very beautiful voice, it's very smooth and clear. Not my genre but really cool. Didn't realise she was the potato potato chick. 2/5 stars.
Richard Thompson
1/5
Yeah it's okay. Where's the wife's credit on the artist name here? Just largely forgettable 1/5 stars.
Guns N' Roses
2/5
Like it's cool but just not my thing. IDK. Always big respect for Sweet Child o' Mine - that's always a really great song. 1.5/5 stars.
The Clash
3/5
A fun album, nothing I really need in my playlists, but one I enjoyed listening to nonetheless. 2.5/5 stars.
Taylor Swift
1/5
I didn't like this at all. Welcome to New York was an actively bad song. How You Get the Girl is the only song I think I could have listened to all the way through. The issue isn't that they're bad songs, they're just not good songs. They have nice build ups that crescendo into nothingness. Nothing burger maxing. They're boring, middle-of-the-road pop. 1/5 stars.
Aphex Twin
4/5
It's an interesting album which I quite enjoyed. It's not something I'd often reach to due to the ambient nature of it, but I did enjoy listening to it a lot as background noise and occasionally as focused listening. I quite liked Xtal, Pulsewidth, I, Heliosphan, Schottkey 7th Para, and Hedphelym. Schottkey 7th Para and Hedphelym were probably my favourites. For somewhat lowkey ambient noise there's a lot going on in the songs which I liked. 3.5/5 stars.
Prince
4/5
This wasn't what I expected at all, but it was fantastic! The songs were interesting, varied, and engaging. A very good listen. DMSR, Automatic, and All the Critics Love U in New York were my personal favourites. This is an album of incredibly long songs which don't feel long. Excellent. 4/5 stars.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
2/5
Not bad actually. I didn't go in with super high expectations, but I had a fun time. Nothing that wowed me but I did quite enjoy Rockin' Around (with you). 2.5/5 stars.
Funkadelic
2/5
It's fun if not necessarily something I need to listen to again. Someone please explain why Wars of Armageddon needed the fart sounds? Unpleasant end to the album. Maggot Brain is super sick and I like the vibes but I don't know that I'd need to listen to it again. 2/5 stars.
Madonna
3/5
Not bad. Amazing was pretty decent and I quite enjoyed Paradise (Not for Me). The rest varied from okay but not my thing to eh, I don't particularly like this song. 2.5/5 stars.
Curtis Mayfield
2/5
Yeah it's fine. Nothing special. 2/5 stars.
Portishead
5/5
One of my favourite albums of all time. It's nice and chill and interesting, always a nice listen. I don't have all of the songs already but I'm still happy listening to even the ones I don't have liked on Spotify. It's a very nice trip-hop album. It's also one of my go-to jogging albums so I might be a little biased. I especially like Roads - it's definitely one of my favourite songs of all time. 5/5 stars.
Sade
2/5
Smooth Operator is OG, and this is a nice, chill, easy-listening album. She has an amazing voice, but this just isn't my type of music unfortunately. 2/5 stars.
James Brown
2/5
It's alright, he has a really good energy and I enjoyed his voice but it's not my type of music. 2/5 stars.
Frank Sinatra
2/5
Worth a listen and it has a certain feel to it which is quite nice. Not something I need, but I enjoyed listening to it. 2/5 stars.
Aerosmith
3/5
Not bad, some of the songs were quite good and had a good vibe to them. I liked Janie's Got a Gun. The rest were okay. 3/5 stars.
Nina Simone
1/5
Just kind of slow and boring. 1/5 stars.
R.E.M.
2/5
Fine, nothing special. I was quite bored listening to this, which is a shame because they have some really good songs. 2/5 stars.
Stevie Wonder
2/5
Kind of boring TBH. Solidly fine. 2/5 stars.
Kate Bush
4/5
This is a really interesting album. The lyric writing is okay for the most part and the lyrics are fine, but the music itself is really interesting. Like super cool. I've always loved Sat In Your Lap - it's one of my favourite songs by Kate. There's a few other songs which are quite good: Pull Out the Pin and All the Love are quite nice. I don't need all of the songs from this album, but it was really cool to listen to yo. 4/5 stars.
Fleetwood Mac
1/5
I found this album really boring to be honest, I'd get halfway through a song and be like "yeah, I've given it a crack I can move on now" over and over for the whole album. Dull. Generic. 1/5 stars.
Holger Czukay
4/5
This was quite a cool album actually, very interesting. I enjoyed listening to this. Oh Lord, Give us Money, Persian Love and Hollywood symphony stood out to me most on my first listen, but the first song actually has a lot to it. I don't know whether I'd want any of these songs in my database, but I did enjoy the experience of this album. I could be pushed on the latter three songs though. 4/5 stars.
Nanci Griffith
2/5
Just kind of boring, middle of the road stuff. 2/5 stars.
Buddy Holly & The Crickets
2/5
Middle of the road, it's fine but nothing special. 2/5 stars
Count Basie & His Orchestra
2/5
Sure, fine. Boring. 2/5 stars.
King Crimson
4/5
I thought this album would be really boring based off the first two songs of it. The next thre were icnredibly cool in that boring prog rock way but they were super interesting too. I vibed supremely with epitaph, moonchild, the court of the crimson king, and the melody in 21st century schizoid man was very good. 4/5 stars.
Van Halen
2/5
I didn't realise Van Halen was so poppy LOL. I'd only ever really listened to Hot for Teacher and assumed they were glam rock. I've heard Jump before and it's fine, and so are the rest of the songs. 2/5 stars.
Brian Eno
3/5
Very serene and calming. I enjoyed listening to it as background noise, I don't think I'd ever sit down and just listen to it but I would revisit if I need to do something else and have a bit more noise involved. 3/5 stars.
Ravi Shankar
1/5
Kinda boring to be honest. Like it's fine, but I think it would have been nice with a bit more depth. 1/5 stars.
Creedence Clearwater Revival
1/5
Generic middle of the road rock. Dull. Nothing special. 1/5 stars.
Pink Floyd
3/5
Welcome to the Machine is a very interesting song with some interesting instrument choices. Very cool. On the whole, it's not the most thrilling album, but it's certainly an interesting one. 3/5 stars.
Silver Jews
1/5
Dull and generic. Not a very enjoyable album, kind of slow and dragging. 1/5 stars.
Steely Dan
1/5
So boring. Just generic and bleh. 1/5 stars.
Belle & Sebastian
1/5
Whatever. It's okay but kind of generic and boring. A few of the executions missed for me too - there was one song where there was talking in the background but it had me wondering if something was playing in a different tab, not that there was talking in the song. 1/5 stars.
Stan Getz
1/5
Just not my thing - shit's got me sleepy at my desk ):
1/5 stars.
The Who
2/5
Behind Blue Eyes is pretty iconic and the I appreciate Won't Get Fooled Again, but this is not an album for me.Just kind of boring generic rock. 2/5 stars.
Queen
2/5
Hm, it's fine. There's nothing that massively jumps out to me. It's got Bohemian Rhapsody which is a cool song and all but nothing that I'm overly obsessed with. 2/5 stars.
Van Morrison
1/5
This is so boring. Just an absolute slog to get through. 1/5 stars.
FKA twigs
3/5
This was quite cool, nothing astonishingly unique, but I did enjoy it. I might check out the rest of her stuff. I quite liked Lights On. 3/5 stars.
The Killers
3/5
Not a bad album, less Christian than the rest of their stuff. I was previously an enjoyer of Somebody Told me and All These Things That I've Done, but Jenny was a Friend Of Mine was a new one which I enjoyed. I think the progression of this album was really good and I enjoyed that flow. 2.5/5 stars.
