I hate comparing but does anyone else feel like this is Samuel T. Herring from Future Islands trying to sing like Blixa Bargeld?
I think i need to listen to this agsin to sort out what's really going on here.
I actually got less interested in this as it went along. Yet another huge album in England from a band I’ve never heard of. Liked it at the start but then it never improved, like a student with a lot of promise but poor discipline. Okay soft rock but otherwise boring.
Bland.
A better singer away from being a memorable band
I like the album cover might not have been in the right mood but this was whatever for me. mid. maybe doesn't deserve to be on this list at all
Good vibes, but it didn’t really stand out in any way.
I liked all the strings and horns. It was a good listen at the end of the day.
How on earth someone thought this should be here, I don't know how someone thought this should be one of the chosen. Maybe as an example of what AI music would become - throw in a bunch of themes from famous, ground-breaking artists, mix it up and spew out this.
Smooth and nice - not very memorable
Remember this being on a lot of "best of" 2000 lists from back in the day but never listened to it at the time. It's fine, some really nice orchestration and horn sections over pleasant tunes. First two tracks are good. However...it's a bit of a shocker for this list, there's nothing I'd hang on this as completely exceptional, ground breaking, mad different or seminal that warrants inclusion ahead of records that aren't here. You could comfortably die without ever having heard this album. 5/10
Lovely but at times a bit pretentious
Like if Nick Cave was boring. Dull, uninspiring, but not abjectly bad.
Turgid, depressing and unadventurours. Perhaps there is a market for this kind of 'slow emo self deprecating bore-fest', but can you keep it at arm's length from me in the future. Thank you
Interesting to read the reviews from when this came out. I really don’t understand the comparison’s to Pet Sounds. Nor did the notion that it was one of the first great albums of the new millennium bear out with time. I kind of liked it at times, but it felt derivative and the vocals vacillated between goofy and annoying. The poor Smokey Robinson impressions were particularly egregious.
So dull. Dull as dishwater. Not my bag at all. Falsetto was a challenge to listen to. Has really made me question what the music press is on sometimes.
jaaa 2000er indie endlich wiedermol (irgendwie die ganz ziit die letste wuche). erste song sehr ruhig aber coole turnaround mitem übermässige chords. lied isch ewig. grumpus irgendwie chli smooth jazz george benson time. es het gad alles sehr fest en sound, ich finds no noice eig. up with people findi recht en guete aafang, seeehr de 2000er indie trompete und klatsche stuff. aber moll guete song. uuuuh und bgvs. jaa. es begeisteret mich nüt bis etz aber s isch alles guet gmacht und mit sehr viel detail.
ohh recht en coole ahfang, iwie sehr es beruhigends lied hahahah you masculine you und megaa schöni blöser leiddder findis jz scho langsam chli "joa schono schön aber scho au seehr fad" ich chegg d chopfatimm nöd ganz hahaha also bi you masculine you hets sinn gmacht aber suscht? jaaa no schön aber für mich langwilig. wills aber so friedlich sind und ich suscht wenig draa uszsetze han, gibi es knapps 3
This shit was smooth af at times but it wasn’t memorable in the slightest.
If Richard Hawley was a neurodivergent, non-binary lumberjack, like my mum.
Enjoyed, particularly the last track
Sophisticated, slow, smooth. I really like the lush arrangements here. This is kinda like The Divine Comedy if they were depressed in the South of the United States, but with less memorable hooks. I guess that's just the depressed part, ain't it? Key tracks: The Old Gold Shoe
There is no reason this album should be on this list; it's not good, not influential, just the most bland, generic album imaginable.
This started strong and then kinda fell off which was disappointing così got excited but ah well. Guys voice does not help the case either
Grumpus ,you masculine you and up with the people have good instrumentals. And this is a rule for the whole album which I enjoy. However weird vocals are a trend in this album and somewhat subtract from the vibe. Later songs are also fairly boring unfortunately.
OK, we can keep this short: Lambchop's “Nixon” is so boring it hurts. I have no idea who would want something like that - I certainly don't.
I can never quite connect with Kurt’s stuff. There’s an air of the imposter to some degree, like why not let someone else sing this material better, but then that would take away from his expression. Ultimately, The Hustle aside, while the production creates a very inviting atmosphere, I never quite find the songs themselves that compelling and Kurt’s delivery is always its own thing...and not mine.

Very cool album, sounds high quality
Not sure why this would have made the list. Nothing particularly fantastic or special about it. It wasn’t terrible, and after a few songs it kind of came into its own, but certainly nothing essential about it.
Pleasantly surprised. A little slow but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Had never heard of the artist. The first half of the album was my preferred, with 'Nashville Parent' my favourite on the album. A calm, melodic, country style of album that hit a sweet spot.
Pleasant, but not enough of anything to help it out of Bland territory.
I need a "I refuse to put a number" score, because this is not necessarily a bad album, but it's not a great one either. I'll probably never again listen to Lambchop, but I'm not mad I got to know the band. Still not sure why this is in the list, even though it was a pleasant listen.
Super mellow chamber pop with soothey talky vocals. Excellent background but nothing to hum along to
2000 chamber pop Up with people
So so
I had no expectations, never heard of lamb chop before. Initial reactions are negative. What is it? Least folky of folk? Least rocky of soft rock? Tiniest hint of psychelia/beatles pop (You Masculine You with brass, bass, and a hint of fuzz) I can't imagine why this is noteworthy? It's so incredibly middle-of-the-road With Up With People it's starting to click into place And then Nashville Parent comes along. I think I just don't like those overly serious vocals. Sounds straight from the 70s or something. Then a psychedelic country in The Distance from Her to There Best track - You Masculine You, Up With People 2 stars - it nearly pulled itself into enjoyable territory, but didn't. The vocals are just annoying
Seems fine, but I'm not wowed. I will likely have forgotten that this exists soon and never think of it again Standouts - 3/5
Ok
Woah. Another band I'd never heard of before. Not bad, but kind of middle of the road okay. Not good enough to really want to listen to again or more of their other stuff though.
I don’t know why I hated this so much, but I found it very grating. Like an alternate reality Smog or Flaming Lips where a lounge music dial was cranked to 10 giving me a pounding headache.
#266/1001 🇺🇸 I love this album so much. After hearing them for the first time 3 or 4 years before this record came out i was hooked on them. This, and the album that followed (Is A Woman) are probably my 2 favourites. Its a beautiful blend of country and soul with strings, steel guitar and Kurt Wagners falsetto vocals. I find the first half more upbeat and as smooth as a glacier, whilst the second half gets darker both lyrically and musically. Best Tracks: Up With People, Grumpus, You Masculine You, The Difference from Her to Here.
really tidy tracks on this
it had some beautiful songs I enjoyed it very much but I got to say it sometimes bored me
Estaban buenas algunas
Seems older than 2000. Not too memorable for me
God damn does chamber pop suck. Did not enjoy this at all.
I honestly did not finish listening after 4 songs. Another boring album selection.
I can’t
Not familiar with this group. Strangely entertaining album. Soothing? Confusing? Makes me feel sleep deprived.
A fine but completely hollow listen. The instrumentals are offensively inoffensive, the singing oscillates between passable and bad. It all comes together as something I’ll likely forget in a week. Not mellow enough to have me relaxed, not lively enough to make a splash. My pick from this album is “The Distance From Her to There”, mostly because it reminded me of one of the many tropes that Mr Bungle album, California, pulls from. You should listen to that record instead of this Nixon one. It’s infinitely more fascinating and challenging. 2/5
It was fine.
Dunno
everything goods about these songs end the moment the lead singer opens his mouth
These calmer albums with strong instruments are always so nice to listen to
I dont find really funny or satirical to put the name of a horrible president on the cover of an album of chilling music because it makes it really creepy and makes you feel like a weirdo. But this is some of the most chilling modern music ever
It's okay I guess. Not sure why the uk seems to love it so much.
Man that was slow. A generous three stars bolstered by the soul and lyrics. "This learning not demonstrate your asinine and callous traits It could take some practice, I know"
Some people can sing falsetto well (the brothers Gibb). Some can't, Lambchop.
Not really sure what I was listening to...why is this considered alternative?
As soon as I saw the critic comparison to Pet Sounds in the Wikipedia article, I knew this was gonna be mediocre. I don't know, nothing really stood out to me. I can see how some would find this blend of genres soothing, but the album never really took that to any interesting places.
This was not good
Didn't hate, wouldn't listen again
Oh hell no
I find the compositions and the playing to be good, but to me I'm just not a fan of Kurt Wagner's voice and especially his vocal fry. It detracts too much of the album for me. Otherwise it's just fine and Mostly Harmless.
I listened... Odd shifts between chest voice and falsetto.
A little slow
normal, no me género nada
This is incredibly boring I'm afraid. There is one hit single, and that's not even that memorable. Why is this here?
Meh.
I found this really quite boring to listen to.
3.5. Not bad.
Dull. As. Ditchwater. One star, because no stars is not an option.
01) The Old Gold Shoe - 6,5 02) Grumpus - 6,5 03) You Masculine You - 6,0 04) Up with People - 7,0 05) Nashville Parent - 6,5 06) What Else Could It Be? - 6,0 07) The Distance from Her to There - 6,5 08) The Book I Haven't Read - 6,0 09) The Petrified Florist - 5,5 10) The Butcher Boy - 6,0 TOTAL: 6,25 (63/100) Current ranking: 755/1030
The old Gold Shoe - starts as very sweet sound of a time gone by Grumpus - such a good vibe song - the guitar and sweeping drums lovely altogether
like the softer more layered stuff Wilco was doing around the time, just with a heaping scoop of soul influence. excellent addition, i must say. adds a lot of flavor. sometimes the vocals get grating but that's indie for ya! i liked it more than i was expecting but it's just not in my style. deserves to be one of the 1001? nah
Why is this here?
Why?
Occasionally lyrically interesting but just too sleepy, dull and twee for my taste.
ehm, after 3 songs i had to turn it off, all so similar
Stopped listening halfway through and really really didn’t feel the need to find my way back. RYM: N Saved a song: N
592/1089 - Some decent horn lines here and there but lethargic song writing and terrible Silver Jews/Wilco style vocals.
Nixon is an interesting album because it's an exercise by British musicians of adopting the aesthetics of an imagined Americana that doesn't really exist. Despite the album's title, there's really no political content here. The lyrics are mostly illustrative embellishments of the Nashville folk-inspired music. That's not meant to be a criticism, by the way; there's room in music for fantasy.
Kukaan ei kuuntele tätä ja sille on syy
boring
Painfully inoffensive and bland
I don’t know anything about this artist, and I went into this album completely blind. But there was something there that was intriguing. I’m not even sure what it was but I WANTED to really love this album. Maybe it’s from the really perplexing and beautiful album cover, but I gave this album more chances than I give most albums on this list. Now I’m not saying I hated it and wanted to keep listening until that changed, but I was just so checked out. It had its moments where it would bring me in but than it wouldn’t/couldn’t hold my attention long enough to get more invested. That being said there were highlights I liked. The two songs that I really fell in love with were/are “up with people” and “Nashville parent”. I love those songs they are both so instrumentally beautiful and the song writing and vocals are on point. Those are both great songs, but I have to say outside of those two songs I found it to be very forgettable unfortunately.
So much beauty here. And I have nothing against falsetto, but this guy ain’t no Curtis Mayfield, and it kind of ruins the mood as it’s hard to take fully serious at times. Could have been a huge hit for me as i love the sound. But I am not really done with this yet.
This was fantastic! Absolutely will be revisiting. Nashville Parent, in particular, really hit.
Wasn't really engaging with this and don't know if I'll ever return to this. Vocally, it's purposefully dry with some moments of this weird falsetto voice that I kinda got into. Sonically, I appreciated the addition of some classical instrumentation, livelier grooves, and even some ambient cricket noises. Still, I really don't get what this is going for. It's too slow and quiet and when it does get sort of interesting, it just ends.
Boring
1 trash
Somehow never heard of this. I could see myself listening to this some more. (ntm.)
Wow! How can you write such a boring set of songs and then get a pub singer to sing them, well, when I say sing I mean talk. I had a lot more to write but the boredom is eating my will up.
Some kind of half spoken word, just jarring vocals, and not something I'll come back to or really needed to hear
This album kept losing stars as time went on, and I'm sure part of that is because I was stuck in some of the worst traffic in recent memory on my commute as it droned on, creating a feedback loop of making me more and more pissed off. The Distance from Her to There may legitimately be the worst song I've heard since Bowie's 'Tis a Pity She Was a Whore, and that's saying something.
I'm still mad I listened to this whole thing. Every time there was a good beat, it was ruined by his singing. What a waste of an awesome band name
meh
pleasant enough but nothing to write home about
