Reviews (page 3 of 7)
sounds good.
Really good!
Interesting album. Gets a bit repetitive later on, and the last song is questionable as fuck, but overall very interesting. Closer to a 3.7 maybe.
Alright I guess
Pas exceptionnel
Under rated hushed indie tunes
Decent enough, a little bit slow and unexceptional, but nothing offensive a solid 3
Sounds like what started the high treble whiney indy rock trend. Not really my cup of tea. Some elements sound vaguely like Floyd. It's not all bad, I guess. Probably won't go back to this though. 3/5
Good sounds but some of the tracks felt very slow
Écouter l’album à minuit sous big canicule à fixer le plafond c’est un mood
The instrumentation sounds a bit like Tortoise, not bad at all. Not a fan of the singing style.
Anger ... anger is the right word. I don't understand these albums at all. Who is the author of this book; who chooses these submissions. Like the album isn't bad (obviously, it got a three). But one of the best albums of all time ?! Is there an album shortage ?! This is a truly flawed human being. Ver hypocritically however, I do like the inclusion of small artists and I did download one song (Grumpus). I'm so close to downloading The Distance From Me to Her but it's just a touch too annoying. Maybe it'll eventually wear at me enough. Anyways damn this project.
This was lovely, but I like Is a Woman better.
Nice but not memorable
Overall I wasn't a fan of this. The soul-singing is pretty rough. The string accompaniment is nice. I think if I listened to it a few times I'd find things I like but first impression was underwhelming.
Surprisingly good.
Better than average by a bit
A beautiful album that passes by like the whispering of sweet nothings.
This was alright, but eventually got boring
7 / 10
its fine. Low 3
Enjoyable enough album, nothing that really gripped me, but I liked it. Three stars.
Hmm... Something new to me. At times I really enjoyed it, other times it was just playing in the background. I think this would improve with future listens. Very melow, hard to place a genre. Wish it didn't end in a murder ballad. I'm still scarred from Nick Cave's murder ballad catastrophe.
Rather boring, nothing special.
Apparently i'm not a soft rock guy.
Rauhallista, chilliä, hieman melankolista musiikkia. Sopii sadekeleille ja väsyneeseen tunnelmaan.
I didn't really like the lead singer's voice and delivery. The instrumentals were interesting at times, but nothing stood out to me in particular. I would give this a 2.5, but I'm okay with a 3.
Fine
One good song 'Up with people' the rest is nice but not great.
Quite cool. Lacks what makes it interesting.
Bra sound stundtals. Intressant men inget wow. 3:a mest pga av produktionen och gitarr/trumljud. Provar gärna någon annan av deras skivor.
Great - don't know much about him
it was fine, gotta relisten. was a bit bored.
Pretty good, I feel like I would appreciate it not if I gave it more time
I'm hitting my limit with the number of unimpressive demure white boy light rock bands playing drony tracks that all blend together. I'm only 50ish albums in. This was fine. There's nothing that particularly stands out for me as bad but the good moments are so fleeting that they barely register.
Moody and a bit of a slog!
I had a hard time giving this one its due. What I heard was pleasant enough.
It amazes me that in the vast ocean of music we have available to us, this album in particular has stood out enough to people to be included on this list. I listened to this while out with the dog and I think it was alright, but can't completely remember. It just kind of passed me by in a weirdly enjoyable and totally forgettable way.
Insipid and bland
I do like this album, but it’s gentle thoughtful nature probably prohibits it from the highest rating.
Kind of good but kind of boring? This is an album I will find back to only because I think it will get better with more listens.
Good stuff
drags a bit
I listened but have completely forgotten everything about this album since yesterday. I don’t think that means it was very good.
Its done well but just isn't my favorite music.
This was fine. I'll probably never put it on again but I have nothing specific to say about it apart from it was boring.
It started out as something very unusual and it is an easy listen but it loses itself and feels a bit dull in parts
Musically very easy to listen to but a bit low energy for the moment I listened. May need to revisit.
Not a band I thought I'd see on this list. This is an oblique album - it kind of defies classification, although it all sounds so familiar because all its references, though disparate, are things we've heard before (save the daniel-johnston-adjacent vocals). There's talent and intent, but it's creating something that I'm not sure I can really get into because, again, though it's disparate and familiar, it's a combination that centers around a core that you either are into or you're not. It's just too somnolent to really grab me by the collar and make me care. I dunno, right music for the right time, but for me, not right now.
This very much reminded me of an album by **The Slow Show** from a few years ago that I really liked and was surely influenced by this in the lush atmospheric arrangements, the melancholic mood, the baritone vocals, the storytelling and the slow but deliberate pacing.
Very smooth and has very pretty instrumentation. I enjoy the unusual lounge-y vocals most of the time but occasionally the falsetto gets a bit Gollum-y. Maybe a 3.5 for me, but quite interesting!
Makes nice background music
I like the restraint.
can't put my finger on who this reminds me of... bill callahan? it's a nice enough record but it didn't make a huge impression on me. maybe it takes a while to grow on you. cool album cover either way.
Bizarre modern 60s throwback record. I like the clean audio perspective of this record. Bass sounds are great.
You know what? I had a good time listening to it. Not much to say but it accomplished its goal. Happy Immortality Day to any 17776 fans out there. My re-reading of it probably influenced this somehow. 6/10
It was a much more enjoyable listen than I expected it to be. It is still weird that it got added to the list but I would get rid of many other albums first. 8/10 [KEEP]
Liked it alright, music was whatever but that guy's range is nuts. I liked the song Grumpus
kind of like arctic monkeys more modern stuff but not bad
Unremarkable and at some point I dissociate for so long I thought it ended, only to find out I'm on track 3
Nice easy listening album. Nothing too too special, but I liked it. Not great. Not a masterpiece. Just good. 2.9/5
This one was quite interesting, although a lot of the songs sounded like they could have been used during the meth cooking montages in Breaking Bad.
Nixon is a beautifully produced alternative take on classic genres but it drags a little too much for an album its length unfortunately. That being said the vocal delivery was not memorable, and after spending 49 minutes of my life listening to this I couldn’t recall a single thing after finishing.
That was unexpectedly pleasant. Ended up listening to it twice. Will keep it in the shuffle for a while.
meh
Something about this album makes me want to like it, and then he starts singing. I wasn't a big fan of when he did that. I can't be too harsh on the album though. There are a lot of interesting songs here, so that's a positive.
Unique country tinged soft rock that didn’t grip me at album length. A few nice tracks.
Another nice listen. Me parecio muy curioso la letra de esta banda, like weird and unconventional pero effective. Mi favorita fue Nashville Parent, such a nice groove! 3/5
Nice warm voice, lush musical production. The compositions themselves are the problem. Unfortunate that talented musicians and producers are bogged down with sub-par material.
Not sure I needed to hear this before I die, but with that said, I actually kind of enjoyed it. Nothing stuck with me afterwards, but I enjoyed how moody it was when I listened to it. I might revisit this another time and see if I feel the same, but first impression is a solid 3 stars.
Hmmmm…
chill
ein elegantes, gut produziertes Werk, das jedoch oft zu gemächlich bleibt. Handwerklich stark, emotional eher zurückhaltend.
I liked it at the beginning, but it’s charms stated to wear by the end. Has some interesting ideas, both musically and lyrically, but doesn’t really expand on them to the fullest.
This was fine, but it all blended together after a while. 3.2
It's a bit country but not twangy. Sounds like Bill Callahan could join in and no-one would notice. Improved after a few listens, quite pleasant.
So then, this gets labelled as alternative country! It's far removed from Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings and quite unlike anything I've heard for a long, long time. I'm not a fan of the falsetto (What Else Could It Be sounds like a scene from The Muppet Show!) and it's a bit beige around the middle, but The Old Gold Shoe is a beautiful opener and Up With People has the most upbeat way of telling us that we're 'screwing our lives up.' The complex nature of Petrified Florist calls for repeated listening and a demand to know the possibly heartbreaking story behind it. Just about more hits than misses - an interesting introduction for me to Lambchop. 3 intrigued stars.
I’ve never heard of the band, but that was some decent early 2000s indie rock!
This did a lot. I like the weirdness and how many directions it went in. I’m not sure how much I’ll return to, and I definitely think the second half was stronger than the first. I think it needs a second listen before my final verdict though.
Loads of variation on this country-indie album.
I didn't expect this to sound like Mac DeMarco
vibe, niks speciaal fso
Pretty ok soft-rock from an artist new to me. Not something I would choose to have on while picking music but not bad in any way. Just not my thing.
This is a nice mélange of country and soul, but bro leave that falsetto alone 😭. When it's arranged with just those two sounds in mind, it's a nice album, but they decided to add some downs. For example, I don't personally vibe with the lyrics and the lack of melodies in the more ambient, chamber-pop tracks like "Petrified Florist".
Not sure how I felt about this one. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't good either. Just seemed to be there inoffensively in the background. 3/5 nothing really stood out, but it wasn't a difficult listen.
Streaming services have recommended Lambchop to me before. I’ve listened to a couple songs and they’re alright. I never really listened to a full album and really didn’t need to. I have no idea why this is included on the list over other indie stuff
***a good, easy listening album.
Un poco sin más, pero no me desagrada
I'm starting to lose track of how many albums on this list feature a white guy who can't/won't/doesn't bother to sing. Lambchop may be a masterful songwriter and composer(?), but this vocal style immediately lulls me into a sense of indifference. I guess I'm just trying to match the artist's energy. This record feels like Bill Callahan or Giant Sand and the guys who made the Virgin Suicides soundtrack got together to make an album. It's lovely, but it's the lowest energy background music I can imagine; it's like a soundtrack for being snowed in a remote mountain cabin for a week. Sure, it's beautiful but, my god, please make something exciting or different happen! To that end, I guess "What Else Could It Be" offers an upbeat mid-record reprieve from the monotony, and on "You Masculine You" he uses a forced falsetto to underline the mockery of his message. So I guess I'll give him credit for being clever. Still, it's not an extremely exciting record.
Pleasant background.
This had a very soothing sound, i should give it a relisten.
That's not my taste in music - But ok
Probably my favorite album titled Nixon.
Ehh it was ok. Pretty standard middle-of-the-road kind of album I'm used to stumbling upon here.
it was better and different that what i expected
Up With People // Nashville Parent // The Book I Haven’t Read Yet //
i generally really enjoy chamber pop and many of the instrumentals in this, but it was too all over the place. going falsetto doesn't compensate for the shortages in the vocals either
I will admit, I was excited to see Lambchop appear on this list and give me an opportunity to listen to it. It's popped up in a couple places as recommendations from people I trust or references made in some of the culture that I consume. But having listened to it, I'm not sure I get it. It's not bad and I don't think less of the people recommending it or listening to it, but I'm not sure I'd go back to it.
Ok
got a solid harry nilson and, even more indie of a references, timber timbre / Father john misty vibes. Pretty sounding.
Liked the instrumentals, did not like the weird Elmo voice.
Good enough to make me explore more Lambchop. Not so good that I’ll hunt the album out again. 3.5 stars
This was better than I expected, but also a bit forgettable
I dunno, a 3? More of a 2.5 bumped up to a 3, I guess, but… I wasn’t really feeling this at all. I have genuinely no idea how to approach writing about this album, mainly because I never found a good way to approach listening to it. I’m a person who really likes dissecting lyrics, or at the very least, I like lyricism as a route to help paint an overall picture; the lines should generally be the colors that allow the brain’s paintbrush to get to the author’s intended destination, or at the very least, a satisfying interpretation. This is an album where the soundscape acts as the colors; I’m not opposed to that sort of thing, as long as the lyricism helps in some way. It didn’t help me a damn bit here. I don’t understand what any of these tracks are about, save for incredibly loose imagery that didn’t grab me as potently as it tried to. That’s sometimes fine though; there have been really good albums where the lyricism gets confusing or hard to parse at points, but where the vocals can pick that up and provide the emotional lean the tracks need to help the paintbrush find its way there. The issue here is that I cannot fucking understand his vocals, both from a literal standpoint (too quiet at times, too pitchy at points, too mumbled under the instrumentals) & from an emotional standpoint, as he sometimes feels like Bob Ross trying to sing, Elmo trying to sing under his breath, or Miss Piggy in a starring off-off-off-off-off-off Broadway role. I couldn’t grasp the emotions out of his lyrics or his vocals, meaning that this is mostly an instrumental album to me. It succeeds as an instrumental album to a point, but these tracks are all far too long, in a way that noticeably overstays its welcome, no matter how lovely & nice they all seem to sound. Without that sense of emotional connection to anchor me along the way, I’m left with an album that tries to say a lot, yet leaves no memorable sticking point to grasp onto. I hear parts of the acclaim here, and to a degree, I get how this might’ve felt fresh & innovative given the state of music in 2000 & the band’s apparent work up to this point, but for 2026 standards… I just don’t really get it. I think it sounds good instrumentally, but his vocals don’t add anything, often dragging some tracks down by being too noticeable whilst having nothing to actually say, given the loose stream-of-consciousness lyrics, which I couldn’t grasp to save my life. I’m stuck at a 2.5 that I’ll bump up to a 3 on account of each track never having an actively bad moment, but this was really close to being bumped down to a 2 on the sole account of “I just don’t fucking understand what the intent of the album was at all” & being utterly frustrated by that. It probably didn’t need to be on the list.
Easy listening of the 2000’s: pleasant if you are paying too much mind, meandering to nowhere. The falsetto, and there is a lot of it, is annoying.
It's OK? Not my thing, but he seems talented.
Having never heard of this band or album, and after reading the description, I hoped I would enjoy this more.
Okay - 1st album to change my mind. I was never really moved by music like this when it came out. It was like the sounds of IKEA, as far as I was concerned. But I wasn't listening to the music. I was subconsciously having a go at the smug, slack trousered, hipsterish, moustachioed middle-classers I knew that liked it. Listening on my own terms, some 20 something years later. Acoustic guitar-led songs with sardonic or ironic lyrics sung in baritone is soooo 1990s/early 2000s but it's pretty well done here. It's definitely dinner party friendly. Could also warrant a close listening session, too.
ok. bit different
I'll agree with the guy who said it sounds like 10 different Netflix openers. It's not by any chance, the music's pretty, it's just even at the end of the album I wasn't able to say "okay, this one's definitely a finisher to the whole saga".
Fine enough. I already forgot it though...
5/10
Nothing notable.
This was very confusing. At first I didn’t get the voice, the orchestration was so grandiose it felt forced with all the strings and I didn’t know where it fit in the year 2000. As a Radiohead fan, I stuck it out and the back half really drew me in. I think this will grow on me, and I will surely give this more listens.
First time listening to this band. One of the top reviews here mentions Dean Wareham and that's the first thing I thought of when playing the first track. The next thing was Lawrence Welk, which is clearly intentional, tongue-in-cheek-like. The next track has a deliberate groove, but it still inspires comparisons of elevator music or 70's AM Gold. The rest is more of that hazy 70's style with ironic vocals and lyrics. Musically, they're solid. I dig it for sure, but I wonder if this hipster niche is appealing to most, which likely explains why they are on this list. Browsing the wiki articles for their other albums it looks like they migrate to other styles later in their catalog. I am admittedly curious to check out more. Overall a very chill vibe here, and mellow is a mood you wanna hit from time to time, so I'm down with it. And there are many crappier bands to sound like than Luna. File under "mildly-quirky retro indie-chamber-pop".
Not my favourite lambchop record but lovely and soothing
Not mad at it. Good use of horns in their songs. Lead vocals remind me almost of the singer from Dire Straits, whomst I love. I also like the album art a lot. I'm a sucker for some good album art. "Up With People" was real good. Did lose some steam in the last three-ish songs for me. Overall I liked it more than I thought. 3.5/5
Pioneers of my beloved DBCAIW genre, Lambchop have been tilling their sumptuous yet unassuming indie-country furrow for a long time now. Not sure why "Nixon" is so feted relative their many others ("How I Quit Smoking" has this beat, years before), but it's representative and fine enough here for a 3.
Inoffensive, mildly interesting musak
Ruhig und schön.
i think i really like some of these songs but for some reason my brain was not processing anything so i need to give it a relisten
feels a bit too much of a try hard. It's fine.
Relaxed, laconic, sharp with its own country sensibility that is compelling
3 out of 5. Sounds a little like Bowie singing motown and a few other genres thrown in.
Okay
I had never heard of this artist or album and was pleasantly interested with the first half of the album, but I kinda got a little tired of it by the end. I'll definitely look more into it though, very unique. Kinda wilco meets tom waits. 2.5 rounded up because it's new to me.
I liked the sound of this band; I think one of our other reviews said it was Wilco-ish, which I agree with and enjoy. However, the singer was meh and the songs didnt really stay with me. I liked it while i was listening and then promptly forgot.
The weird lyrics really elevated the slightly ignorable baroque folk arrangements
Grew on me as I progressed through the album, calming at times.
Good background music
Interesting…gonna give this artist a few more listens
Pleasantly inoffensive, enjoyable to relax and drive to in a morning
Sounds like that space cloud from Rick and Morty, only slightly less obviously ripping off Bowie. Ultimately, there is too little going on to hate or love it.
Not sure what this was doing here but it was alright
Definitely one of the albums ever made
Nothing really new or outstanding, but great mellow and enjoyable music!
I definitely did not expect this. A nice, inoffensive album -- but perhaps without too much to offer.
This floated by in the background making no impression positive or negative. It just is. The falsetto really sounds like Ms Piggy which is not ideal
I have never heard of this band, but it was quite pleasant. I enjoyed it!
nice genre
A sonoridade é bem bacaninha, sofisticada e despojada, meio old fashioned... guitarras divertidas, melódicas, limpinhas...Boas canções...Uma certa experimentação...Pergunta: compraria esse disco? Acho que não...3-4 estrelas
i like how weird it is sometimes on the vocals. it feels like it should never really work, and yet every track did.
Even speed, listening was a waste of time
meh its decent
Lambchop is such an interesting band to me. I had heard them described as alt-country but they constantly experiment and hop genres. My favourite record of theirs is Flotus where Kurt Wagner runs all his vocals through Auto-Tune giving the whole album a completely unique sound. Nixon isn’t one I listen to a ton but it was their breakout album where the experimenting really starts. Definitely enjoy it for the most part.
Cover 4 Over the right circumstances, this would be nice to listen to. Any other time, it's very slow and mellow.
I wanted to like this album more but why was he just whispering for for 75% of it? Made it hard to enjoy the writing though I thought the music was, for the most part, good. highlights include "you masculine you", "distance for her to there", "butchers boy"
pretty album art. was vibing slightly throughout, though i took a little break in the middle of a song because i got a call at work and coming back to this dipshit crooning was not pleasant. instrumentals are nice and his voice is fine enough in low dosages. the lyrics i actually ingested seem well considered, impactful when i catch an "asinine" or "disgusting" every now and then.
I quite liked it when listening but it's really forgettable. Great album cover though
Quite chill at times; strong 3
Pretty sure I've seen this album cover around before. It's pretty neat - I like the autumnal colour palette and vintage painting style. I'm getting an alternative rock vibe from this cover and album name. Hopefully I'm correct. Wow, I wasn't expecting this. Quite the blend of genres. I'm a pretty big fan of the instrumentals. There are some pretty great string sections that are paired nicely with some intricate guitarwork. Some of the background embellishments are nice too, especially the warm saxes and cosmic synths. If there's one con, it's that I'm not yet decided on the vocal style. It's a little too breathy and squeaky for me, but it's decent for what these songs aim to be. "The Old Gold Shoe" is a nice opener. Earnest and mellow are among the better qualities a song can capture. "Grumpus" is a superior follow-up. That instrumental is pretty golden. The strings and guitar intersect with one another pretty perfectly, and the percussion/sax breathe further life into the piece. A pretty good track overall. "What Else Could It Be?" is more of the same, but I ain't complaining. Book time. Nothing much of note in there. Wikipedia reveals that this album was very well received by critics in the UK and was a moderate chart success. I can bat for this one. It's been way, waaaaaay too long since I last heard an album that I genuinely liked, so I kind of feel that this album earns it's place on those grounds. I cosign this inclusion.
I liked what i heard but I also felt what I heard went nowhere. Album art is cool. Favorite Songs: Grumpus amd What Else Could It Be?
Some of this is really nice. I recognise a single song from it and I assume that is the famous one because it’s actually quite good. But I found the rest of it quite forgettable
Pretty and mellow. Not sure on the falsettos, but I liked the album quite a bit better on the second listen.
Not my favorite, but not bad.
ok
A bit sleepy and forgettable, but undoubtedly well made. Not too keen on the high-pitched, squeaky singing style, which thankfully isn't prevalent across the entire thing. Probably needs more listens to fully appreciate.
A turn-of-the-millennium album, Nixon puts you in a good mood, even an inspired one if you allow it to flow w/o much investigatory intent. In other words, this is nothing more than a pop record, tho it has the quirky lyricism of an indie-rock release and Kurt Wagner sings w/ a been-there-done-that hipsterism. Its optimism is a welcome elevation, especially when it nears a gospel-affect, but it eventually cloys too much and bottoms out in the end. I'm left w/ bits and pieces of what isn't genius but merciful decency: 'Each and every stinking day / I'm getting much better / This evening's little up-setter'; 'Part of the process / Is sifting thru the piles of shit.' If Chance the Rapper were in a soul-rock outfit, this is the sort of sappy thing I'd expect.
Alright, had a nice vibe but fully my style. 3 stars
Elmo sings off-kilter soul/country which could be easily paired with a found-footage compilation of a psycho-murderer doing their passion crime. I was unnerved the entire album, which I think is the point. It's incredibly haunting with its cheery up-beat melodies paired with the disturbingly suggestive lyrics peppered with violence and fist-clenched insinuations. Like watching something drown in the most picturesque lake you've ever seen. Probably going to give me nightmares - 6/10
Pre-Listen Thoughts: Why is this here?? What business does this legitimately have being here?? “Nixon became a breakthrough release for Lambchop in the United Kingdom.” Oh. That’s why. Guys, we’ve made better music than this in the States you could have picked from. I promise there are better albums than this. Post-Listen Thoughts: Ok, so admittedly I was WAY too harsh on this album. It’s actually pretty good. I still stand by the fact that we have much better albums to pick from, but I enjoyed my time with this album substantially more than I had anticipated after reading the genre was “Pop Country”. So, first of all, I don’t hear Country in this album at all. This is borderline just Indie Rock. It’s the good kind of chill where you’re not really engaged in the music the entire time, but you’re still happy that it’s on in the background regardless. I’m not the fondest of the lead singers voice, but it’s at least passable. Then you get to the last 2 songs on the album, and they’re actually kind of just great. “The Petrified Florist” and “The Butcher Boy” are by far my favorite songs on this album. So, you know what. I’m sorry for pre-judging you, Lambchop. This was a nice, chill, pleasant listen-through on an otherwise busy, stressful day. I think I was also thrown off by the first song, which is actually my least favorite on the album. If you can get past that, you’re home free. And if you like it, hey, you’re probably going to enjoy the rest of the album a lot. Bonus.
A nice blend of country and soul, with lush instrumentation. It ultimately falls flat because the singer is whimpering strangely and there are absolutely no hooks to speak of.
Soft rock - lounge music
Alt-rock. Okay
Chill rock, a bit too chill to my tastes at times but maybe there's a place for it somewhere in the albums I listen to anyways. Really vibe with Nashville parent.
Slow mellow.
A very fun and relaxing album. It is quite fitting for a autumn day Fav song - Grumpus 3/5
This was a fairly chill album from an artist I wasn't familiar with. Some 70's soul mixed in. Not sure I'd revisit it, but it made pretty decent background music.
I was confused by this album. Its sound was just off of everything. Like kinda rock, kinda easy listening, kinda r&b ish and no twang but the guitar kinda sounded country for a second. Idk
Not my style but it was a pretty solid listen
Stupid band name and a stupid album name so I had my doubts going into this. Musically they are super solid and the vocals have a nice delivery an rasp. So a great album, right? Should be but I just didn't connect with this really at any point. It seems like they couldn't find a hook in the entire album.
Kinda dreamy, quite sleep music. Okay in moderation, not sure I wanted a full album
This was interesting, and cool, but not my favorite. Three stars.
Didn’t expect to like it as much as I did.
Hmm I don’t really like albums recorded at someone’s toilet. music wise it’s a bit boring. It’s not terrible on a lazy Friday but doesn’t do much either.
Easy listening but a bit boring. I hate the songs in falsetto, but I really liked "Up With People". That song saved it from being a 2.
I enjoyed this to begin with but it all kind of felt the same as it went on. Fav track: Grumpus
Track 1 had me thinking this album would be terrible, but the rest of the songs proved it was only mediocre
Pleasant surprise
Guys. I think we found where AI got its piss filter from. I thought it was boring initially, but I kind of got into it later. I mean, this is just peaceful background music that doesn’t do anything to stand out, and that’s not for me. I pretty much never in the mood to listen to anything like this. But I guess his voice is pleasant, so I enjoyed it a little bit.
Moody retro rock vibes
This turned out to be a pleasant surprise; I had never heard of Lambchop and didn’t know what to expect. I liked the chamber pop style of instrumentation though the vocals were hit or miss for me. Reminded me of Destroyer or later Arctic Monkeys albums.
Very cool to start the journey with an album that dropped on Jan 1, 2000. Beautiful instrumentals from start to finish. Never heard of this album or band but we’re off to a solid start. Wouldn’t listen for the singing performance however. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Not bad...but too mellow, sleepy for me.
I think this album suffered from our group due to the obvious similarities with Bill Callaghan - baritone and sing/talk vocals plus generally slow tempo music. I listened to this maybe 10 years ago when it was on some other beat of list and my opinion hasn’t changed. I liked it pretty well, but there is not enough to get me to go deeper. Let’s hope the National isn’t the next album.
Haven't heard of them before. I was a bit skeptical when I read what genre the album is. But honestly it was quite good. I think I'm not immute to chill sounding music lately 3/5
It’s okay
Доволі нудний інді\чамбер-поп. Так, аранжування й оркестровки красиві, але для мене це не рятує Nixon на жаль. Інколи правда нагадало дестройер, це, мабуть, найкращі моменти альбому.
Pretty chill, sleepy indie, nice background music.
Lambchop simply doesn't do it for me.
I thought this one was pretty interesting at first, but something about it just didn't work well in the long run. I think the vocals are just a bit too relaxed or detached, I enjoyed the orchestral score on "Nashville Parent" a lot but the lyrics didn't impress me. This does seem to be prescient of a bunch of post-2000 indie music, so it is an interesting album on that front. Favorite track: maybe "Up With People"
Oh, very doom and jazz and light and same tempo
There are some lovely wee touches to this and I like some of the arrangements but that falsetto voice is something else… 2.5
Do połowy przesłuchany aktualnie, ale spoko dziwny, dosć przyjemny; bardziej jako odskocznia od typowej muzyki
I don’t love Kurt Wagner’s voice and there are times when this album can get a little boring, but it’s not bad. Probably not something I would revisit a lot, but I can see why people like it. Wouldn’t be in my own 1001 list though.
I wasn't sure about this one at first, but I really enjoyed my time with it.
I love Up With People already (mostly the remix tbh), but the rest of this felt a bit too bland? Like. The Moderately Warm Lips or sth
Quite liked this, particularly liked Up With People.
What a strange series of sounds.
Some really spoke to me while most did not. Reminded me of Mac DeMarco.
Cool little unique blend of genres. I enjoyed the first half a decent bit but not really the back half. Album art is great too. Rating: 3.2
Ok to listen to once but not my kind of indie music. I’m missing a a bit of power here.
Tranqui
Nice stuff, could see it growing on me more. Charmed by the idea that this caught on in the UK but not so much in the states. Americana innit
This was decent! I liked it more than i would expect to like something describerd as "a merging of chamber pop, countrypolitan, and R&B sounds alongside "sweet" soul music."
Gute Hintergrundmusik, bisschen zu cheesy.
Very good production, but the singer's forays into breathy falsetto vocals really don't do it for me.
Its very good. Very pleasant Easy listen
I feel like this is what Neutral Milk Hotel sounds like to people who don't like them.
Their 1996 album How I Quit Smoking was a bit of an indie touchstone— it's an album I attempted to get into several times. Eventually I decided it was just cluttering up my library and my mental capacity and I rid myself of it. This album is not much more enticing, I'm afraid.
Some of the songs were sooo good. Some were a little different. Overall, the album was so calming and I enjoyed it. More like 3.75
I had never heard of Lampchop before. I don't even really know what genre to put it in but I enjoy the music. Gentle voice and interesting lyrics, can't say I'm wanting to listen to more.
Didn't get all that much out of this.
Good
Sneaky fire
Dad- 7 Mom- 5 Mike- NA Lori- 6.5 Michael- 6 Miles- 6 Cole- NA Avg- 6.1
Interesting album whic was very enjoyable but without any top songs I felt I had to listen to again.
Pretty good
Who put this here. Fave Tracks: Nashville Parent, Butcher Boy 3.1/5
прикольная хуйня, но вокал такой блюзово-уставший не клеется вообще
I was in the right mood tonight for this album. It is a very nicely arranged and neatly produced chamber pop album with a touch of country. I enjoyed it, though it felt a bit directionless and inconsistent at times. 3+ stars at my first listen.
This is an interesting record and one you wouldn't expect to like because it's so different. There are so many different genres sprinkled here surprisingly they all work. It's not something you need to be in the mood for and even then you're not fully prepared for what you're hearing.
This album doesn't make much sense to me. Everything about it should, in theory, be great. It's relaxing, the band knows what they're doing, and the vocalist does really well on his part. It's an incredibly well-done album that just doesn't have much in the way of real interest. The parts where the vocalist goes super high and strained with his voice sometimes work and sometimes don't, the suddenly more electronic instrumentation on The Petrified Florist was interesting for the fact that it's finally something different, but even then it feels like too little too late. Maybe it's the lack of risk-taking on this album, maybe it's how clean everything sounds, or maybe some third thing that I can't make out, but this album as a whole was just okay, but that seems to be exactly what it's going for.
A nice album. I could quite happily have this on in the background for its chilled out, melodic vibes. However, there's not enough to grab onto to give it more than a 3*.
This is much more mellow than I had anticipated the album being. Not sure what I expected. It was pleasant music, though the songs were a bit long for my tastes. I am not sure I have ever heard a mixture of alt-country, chamber-pop and soul mixed in to one band. So, I give credit for that mixture of sounds. It was very sleepy and the length of the songs caused my attention to divert at times. It was never bad and I would possibly suggest this one to an individual who may be prone to enjoying this kind of music. For me, it just didn't grab me, even when the lead singer went totally falsetto (on What Else Could It Be). The songs I enjoyed the most were: The Old Gold Shoe Grumpus Up with People What Else Could It Be The Book I Haven't Read
Just a little too weird for me. Like the whining and the whale- Just a little too weird for me. Like the whining and the whale-like noise, just can’t do it, man. Cool instrumentals though.
There were moments I didn't like--especially those when the lead singer switched into ~The Voice~ (if you've listened to this, you know what I mean)--but I found the middle section of the album really compelling. Not sure I'd reach for it again, but it was an interesting listen. Rounded up from 2.5 *. Standout tracks: Up with People, Nashville Parent, The Petrified Florist
American 2000s country pop. Breakthrough in UK. Very laid-back pop, pleasant. Vocals a bit irritating.
Meilleurs tounes : Up With People, Nashville Parent, What Else Could It Be?, The Book I Haven’t Read, The Petrified Florist.
I liked this! Hints of Smog, which is great. Maybe a little splash of David Berman minus the depression (RIP to a maestro). Stylistically varied while maintaining it's chill regardless of the direction the tracks take. It definitely hits like a 2000 indie album, and that is not a bad thing. 3.5 stars.
I liked it
Pretty good
To quote the young lady. "It's mid."
Pretty good.
Особо не зацепил стиль
this album reveals itself little by little and i've come to regret that it's coming to an end. it really deserves its 3 stars.
at first I was really enjoying this and found it beautiful and I really liked the lead singer's voice. but then it just took a turn and got really grating to me for some reason. i'm really not sure what it was, maybe my mood just changed or something. but the smoothness of it suddenly became very irritating, but up until that point I was enjoying it very much and can see myself adding some of these songs individually to a playlist of other songs. Fav tracks: The Old Gold Shoe, Grumpus
Thoughts before listening: I'm pretty sure I once owned this album. I'm also pretty sure I thought it was slow and boring. Perhaps age will have changed my mind. Review: This is fine. There are certainly some moments that grab my attention, but for the most part this is a little dull. Definitely a slow burn for most of these songs and some get more interesting the longer they go on. My favorite parts are when the horns kick in on some of these songs. Ultimately, this is a perfectly fine alt-country album that has a few highlights but never really rises to the heights of their contemporaries i.e. Wilco or Son Volt. 3-stars
Nice calm Sunday morning drive
Completely new band and album for me. Bit of a duff name Lambchop especially for an American band from Tennessee. Thought a lambchop was very much an English delicacy. That aside the album had a bit of everything in it so chapeau to that. Was wondering what Wiki described as countrypolitan was. So now I know but i do sometimes have to laugh what lengths some people go to when trying to describe a genre of music. An enjoyable hour spent listening but probably something I will not readily return to. 3/5 15/6/25
Little short but not bad.
Sorry, I just don't have time for this.
I have never really listened to Lambchop. I was aware they existed and was under the impression they were something to do with Wilco but apparently not. This is primarily indie-country in feel although there is a mix of styles which works sometimes, others is a bit of a mess: country-ish, Philly soul, new wave (Joe Jackson), and strings. Singer, Kurt Wagner's voice is fragile and almost disappears when he tries falsetto. His falsetto is terrible. Some of the otherwise musically fine songs sound like the vocals have been demoed for other singers. Unlikely to listen to this again although it wasn't unpleasant. At least it reminded me that it has been a while since I listened to (the completely unrelated) Wilco and Uncle Tupelo...
Probably would have benefitted from a second listen
Pretty mellow, chill rock
"The Old Gold Shoe" -- sounds like low-volume YLT ("Our Way to Fall" maybe?). Syrupy in a not-too-bad way Production, engineering sounds great. This dude's voice is not my bag (which is why I avoided listening to it when it came out). Strangely felt a little like David Bowie's Blackstar at points -- maybe it's the clean production. But without jazz influence.
Had not heard of Lambchop before, so I’m not sure what I expected but this wasn’t it. Kind of reminded me of Father John Misty or some of the more ballad like Arctic Monkeys songs. I’m not sure the songwriting gets to the level of Alex Turner or FJM but it feels like something one has to listen to a few times to really get.
2.5 Up and down on this one, started strong and ended strong, middle was a bit of a slog
I think I grew to kinda like this record. Or more so grew to not hate it haha, I don’t really love it all too much but off my first listen I was not into this much at all. Giving it a lot more chances though I found some parts of this album that were great and I quite enjoyed.
Lushly orchestrated and mellow (small r) rock. This album doesn't really jump out at you with hooks or catchy melodies - it's more like a warm breeze or a cool stream that's continuously flowing. Ease yourself into it and relax. Best Tracks: Grumpus; Up With People; What Else Could It Be
Pretty smooth - good to listen to while finishing off an assignment
This was my first encounter with Lambchop. It was... pleasant but fairly forgettable. I found the singer's voice comforting, though.
5/14/25. Country isn’t my favorite genre, but I always like diving into alternative country! Really enjoyed the vocal performance and string arrangements.
Music was kinda ok, kept waiting for a more upbeat song and it just never came. After reading the band's bio I was definitely not expecting strings and vibraphone. Giving a second listen (with headphones) because technically I should like this and I feel like I'm missing something.
its like if brit rock met country western folk music. its not bad, nice string section, its like looking over a vista in the old west as the sun rises and touches everything, ready for a long day on horseback. its just gentle all around, maybe a little too much.
Not the biggest fan of the singer’s singing style
Recognise the cover not the music. Lent this from a friend when came out, seems never gave it back but until today never listened to it either. Well on hearing, it’s strengths are its weaknesses, it’s chill and relaxing, the essence of smooth pop, country soul Easy-listening, but does little to and can see why people have said bland. Personal found it a Pleasant listen to be doing nothing, if not particularly anything memorable other than the chill feeling. 3 Star
Well, I wasn't expecting this kind of music by a band called Lambchop. A lot of the album was dreamy, some was smooth seventies soul, there was some Leonard Cohen inspiration, some of it sounded like a movie score, the falsetto reminded me of Prince, and the album title is after Richard Nixon. All of this makes for a weird album that was somehow cohesive? I didn't hate it and was intrigued.
The country pop side of the record was pretty good, but the falsetto parts grated a bit too much. For anyone interested in massively different takes on the same song, try comparing "Butcher Boy" off this record to "Lankum - Go Dig my Grave". When I realised it was the same song I had a little chuckle to myself.
Didn't speak to me
I kinda liked it. Never heard of 'em. Weird at first, not crazy about the guys voice, but it grew on me. Even went to listen to other albums of theirs. Will be back!
Chillovo
This album is yet more evidence that I shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, or music based on the band name. I don’t know why but this isn’t at all what I was expecting from a band called Lambchop. I was fairly indifferent for most of this album, but I enjoyed Up with People, the Petrified Florist, and Butcher Boy. Probably not enough to ever revisit this album though. Favourite tracks: Up with People, the Petrified Florist, the Butcher Boy
There are parts of this I like a lot, but the. The falsetto comes in
Definitely an innovative and dynamic album. I appreciated the variance between serenity and chaos. While I appreciate many aspects of it, it's not really my thing.
It's not bad but it's not buttering my parsnips
6/10 - It was pretty relaxing but was also quite repetitive. I think it did a nice job making the atmosphere. I could feel myself sitting around a campfire or on a porch swing listening to someone play this song
Pretty chill. Music was fine
This was really interesting - I'm not really sure it knows what it wants to be. Some tracks I was really into the instrumentation but not really the melodies. At times it felt like a light folk record. Then at times it felt like it wanted to be this soul r&b groove. I like all of that - but I don't really think this record had a 'consistent voice'. Not great - but not awful. A fine album to listen to on my commute in!
Soft och skönt.
Plätschert so dahin, viel Streicherbegleitung.
Disco buena ondita.
Ummm not sure what all the fuss was about with this, it's alright but kinda just background noise. Mid 3.
It was interesting album, I enjoyed it. However it's not a style of music I am use too.
I usually hate talk-singing, but it definitely depends on the music that type of "vocals" are paired with. This guy gets away with it. The music is chill and the talk-singing couples decently. But would I revisit any of this? Nah. "Butcher Boy" definitely should not have been the ending track. "Yeah let's put the most anxiety inducing track that seemingly finishes very abruptly at the end of a mostly chill, relaxing album." That made me almost bump the rating down to two.
So much potential ruined by god-awful singing. The jazzy style with strings and horns on top got me going. Then the dude opens his mouth. Who Could It Be could be an incredible track. I was literally laughing at his singing. What a shame.
Subtle
Completely unexceptional.
Generally a pleasant album. I liked the staccato cadence of the first song. In fact, the first song was my favorite song. Everything after felt a bit samey, and I didn’t love the falsetto.
I've been meaning to get round to listening to this for years, now I finally have but was a bit underwhelmed. Probably takes a few listens to really get why it's so acclaimed but on first listen not much stood out for me.
Stopped after 3 songs, because I know where it is going... Nowhere. Meandering around and simply boring... Definition of background music. Extremely meh, middle of the road. Well produced, but not a single edge... Already forgotten after T-5 minutes...
Good production, good arrangements, not so good songs, and a little boring, but enough variety to deserve 3 stars
Easy enough listen but nothing stood out. Did not care for the vocal style either.
Cool, lofi, and unique.
Didn’t like it’s one at all on the first listen but it grew on me with a second listen. Start and end were quite good though it did still dip in the middle.
Not really sure what it is about this album that I like but I do. Maybe it’s another one of those underdogs that I latch onto? The production is tight and the vocals generally fit the music, but it fails to kick on.
A solid, interesting, varied, rock album.
A turn of the century chamber pop album that seems to have slipped out of the mainstream consciousness - and for good reason it seems. It's good, yes, but I don't see how this was so praised upon its' release.
Enjoyable, would return to learn more about lambchop and their other albums
Enjoyable 3/5
Entspannter wholesome Country-Rock
Not a terrible listen...just pretty boring.
Some nice songs like Nashville Parents but for the rest I'd say its just background music. Nothing really to remember here
All over the place genre wise def interesting with some decent tunes. 3.5
Smooth, gentle (chamber?) pop, with a little southern lean (slide steel)
Not sure but I listened to it all
romcom zene, a háttérben elmegy de nem hiszem hogy gyakran beraknám magamtól, vannak azért jobb trackek
Kedvenc/Favourite: Up with People Volt egy fura, jólesően szomorkás hangulata, ami eléggé tetszett. It had a strange, comfortingly sad vibe, which I quite liked. Most of the songs are unfortunately quite similar, but there are some outstandingly good ones in there. I kind of get the feeling that this soundscape isn't quite good enough to justify so many long songs, but I can imagine that some people really enjoy it.
I want to like it. I'm not sure about the falsetto and the general tweeness of the music. Not terrible.
