Album Summary

Garbage is the debut studio album by American rock band Garbage. It was released on August 15, 1995, by Almo Sounds. The album was met with critical acclaim upon its release, being viewed by some as an innovative recording for its time. It reached number 20 on the US Billboard 200 and number six on the UK Albums Chart, while charting inside the top 20 and receiving multi-platinum certifications in several territories. The album's success was helped by the band promoting it on a year-long tour, including playing on the European festival circuit and supporting the Smashing Pumpkins throughout 1996, as well as by a run of increasingly successful singles culminating with "Stupid Girl", which received Grammy Award nominations for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group in 1997. In October 2015, the album was reissued to mark its 20th anniversary, featuring remastered tracks from the original analog tapes, as well as remixes and previously unreleased alternate versions of songs from the album.

Rainwater filters through trash and creates leachate, a toxic liquid filled with heavy metals, chemicals, and microplastics that can seep into soil and groundwater. Leachate is essentially garbage juice.

Garbage in name, Garbage in nature. DO NOT LISTEN

Listened to half of this yesterday and at the time I was dismissive. Listened to the second half today and really enjoyed so 🤷‍♀️ initially I was thinking this was closer to the Sheryl crows and Shania Twains than the grunge era, but then the music today I thought was quite good, some sounds you'd hear in modern fontaines so I dunno

I am in LOVE with Shirley's voice, this fact rises one point. Not a bad debut.

Thankyou, random internet algorithm. This was the best garbage ever

I only know of Garbage from their radio hit singles "Only happy when it rains" and "Stupid girl", and while I always enjoyed hearing those songs I never really thought much about them even back then. I think I sensed that they were only a pop-oriented band playing at being hard-edged, not knowing anything about the pedigree of the band's members, especially Butch Vig's involvement. I'm so glad this collection let me correct the error of my ways: this album is the product of a collection of talented and creative artists who found a way to blend heavy (enough) rock with samples and electronic music really well, especially for the mid-90s. There are, in fact, very few if any real duds on this album (maybe "Fix me now"), and lots of well-produced dark highs. What an impressive debut--I look forward to hearing their subsequent albums when this project is finally over for me. (And why in the world did this album only make it into one edition of the "1001 Albums" book (2010)?)

I really enjoyed the lead singer's voice and the music; occasionally they seemed to settle for some weak lyrics. Favorite tracks: Only Happens When It Rains, My Lover's Box, Milk.

it was GARBAGE (it was ok)

something about the mixing made it a bit difficult to listen to with my earphones but otherwise i was very much enjoying myself!

i wouldn't consider calling myself a garbage fan but i don't think that this is garbage.

at least its not Hot Garbage

Gorgeous record with a distinct, sample-based and backwards production style that puts it in its own category. The lyrical performances had high energy and spirit, while the catchy melodies spun in the background. Hypnotizing and mesmerizing record.

The poor man’s Curve, but I like Vow

I was aware of but never paid attention to this band. Individual songs are well-produced (wall of sound, guitars and what I gather are sample) but make very little impression on me as songs - I am not attracted to listen again - lyrics don't stand out, I don't hear enough to make me want to look up a transcription. I listened through the album, but didn't find it interesting. It's Not Good, 4/10.

Began growing on me in the second half, and I enjoyed the vocal performance overall.

𝘎𝘢𝘳𝘣𝘢𝘨𝘦 is a decent alternative rock album that I neither particularly loved nor disliked. It’s enjoyable enough, and there’s certainly nothing wrong with the overall sound, but it never really managed to grab my attention in a meaningful way. Most of the time, I found myself thinking, “Yeah, this is alright,” which pretty much sums up my experience with the entire record. It’s not that the music is bad or unpleasant to listen to. It just doesn’t leave much of an impression on me. There’s enough here to make it a perfectly fine listen, but not quite enough to make me want to come back to it anytime soon. Sometimes an album is simply okay, and that’s exactly where this one lands for me. Nothing more, nothing less.

Garbage is one of those bands that I felt like I slept on a little in the 90s. I knew their hits and liked them, but didn't pursue anything outside of the hits. A few years ago, I saw them open for Tears for Fears and was amazed at how many songs I knew and how good they were. This is a really solid album. Lots of hits that I like and a few songs that weren't hits that I like as well. There's a spot towards the beginning where the album really dropped off for me before it got back to some of the singles, but overall I enjoyed it and would listen to it again. I do have to look at this album in the context of the list though. Is it an album that is of enough significance that everyone should listen to it once? Probably not. But a solid listen for me personally.

Apposite

Good singles, weak album

Pretty good alternative rock album, packed with that self righteous attitude that was prominent in the 90s. Hugely successful of course but has largely passed me by and will continue to do so.

Definitivamente voy a revisitar algunos temas. Top 3: 1. Vow 2. Not My Idea 3. Queer

It's good to hear Garbage again. I love Shirley's voice. This was part of the 90's grunge soundtrack. love it.

Its ok but the songs are sounds the same

Takes me back to being a teenager in the best way

I really like their hypnotic sound and strong, female lead vocals. I previously only knew the song 'Stupid Girl' but now will add this album to my rotation. I think a lot of other bands have tried to copy their sound.

Album as a whole is too dark and dreary for me to want to listen again, but they do sound polished and capable.

Surpising good album overall. Like a poppy My Bloody Valentine at times. Much better on a second/third listen too. Would listen to more stuff from this band. Favourite tracks: Supervixen, Only Happy When It Rains, Vow

Not the hugest fan of the sound, but I knew that would probably be the case going in. I'm just not angsty enough to like this genre.

Pretty cool! I can see why they were chosen to be the Bond theme. They feel of the time, but also feel like they are sound forward thinking for the time. Like, what the 90s thought the future would be like. I dont know if that makes sense, but I get it.

that was brilliant, i really liked it, it’s nice to listen to a rock band that’s different from the typical american rocky bands. refreshing and so good i love her voice

Incredibly biased rating because I used to LOVE this album. Not as good as I remember it from my teen years. Still some brilliant songs. Love manson’s voice.

This wasn't garbage, however this album by my standards felt like a Portishead tribute act at times especially on the back half and a mid 90s sound besides some high points during the singles I've heard before

I’m Only Happy When It Rains has got to be one of the most Gen X coded songs. I love it. Overall decent album. It’s so clean and yet so dirty. Probably a bit ahead of its time in some ways, extremely of its time in others. 4.0/5.0 Best song: only happy when it rains

Very 90s. Shirley Manson is an excellent front woman and elevates the tunes with her presence and delivery.

Gosh I had a crush on her when I was a teenager. And my teenage memories are where this music will stay; the lyrics aren’t hitting like they used to.

Ok. I may have owned this, I know I heard it. Sounds like the time it came from.

this is a fun nostalgic romp. definitely feels very of its moment

Well produced of course but not too polished sounding. The reviews saying this is like other music they’ve heard are correct, it is like other music, made by people who heard this and tried to emulate it.

On a late 90s kick. Make Yourself, Ray of Light, and now this. I enjoy this record a lot. I got to see Garbage live during the Alanis Jagged Little Pill anniversary tour. 3.5

Garbage - Garbage Eg hugsar godt då eg første gong høyrte og såg “Only Happy When It Rains” på MTV. 8/10

For an album called garbage, by garbage this album was suprisingly good. It reminded me of elastica: moody electronic rock

Now I did NOT expect this to go that hard! Definitely hit a two step in the bathroom this morning. Now I know what it feels like to be a teenage girl getting ready in the 90s, life is complete now.

Meh. It’s ok. I wouldn’t say it’s Garbage exactly. More like the recycling.

Really great record. There's at least four proper hits on this record and I loved them back in the 90's when it came out

For a band named Garbage this is, not good. I like a few songs but this band has no place on this list imo

Fantastic album, no bad songs

I think they’re a little hard on themselves. This was pretty good.

Apt name. Didn't enjoy this outside of one song. Some cool guitar tones and that's about it.

Pretty enjoyable.

Butch Vig + Shirley Manson = 90s alt rock goodness

Super cool #lovewomen

Meh not a big fan. It's not bad by any means. Just didn't care for it too much.

Surprised me how much I enjoyed this, so many great hooks and not a lot of duds

I enjoyed the album. But it's not the album i'll be listening to again.

Goddamn this group arrived with a bang in 1995. Vow was all over the radio, with that addictive stereo effect at the start before it bursts into the first proper verse. Just awesome. There are some other wonderful singles here, like Queer, Supervixen, Only Happy When It Rains, and Stupid Girl. Album closer Milk is also worthy of a mention. The remainder is a bit less stellar, and I'm not sure if that is a function of the songwriting, or if they just ran out of ideas after the initial burst. Anyway, a strong debut, Shirley Manson debuts as a star, with her band of merry men making electronic rock noises for the masses. Highly recommended

This angsty female alt-rock that includes these guys and a few others I will never fucking understand. I’ll stick with Cub and Bjork for my female 90’s alternative.

Really good album, but the handful songs that got radio play are far better than the rest of the album. Which asks the question, am I familiar with them because they’re better, or do I think they’re better because I’m familiar with them?

This was an interesting pop/punk album. Dark sad lyrics of romantic wants losses and fetishist. Ms. Manson is a very good song stress and she is backed by a good band.

Garbage by Garbage

Heard the singles, but never listened more. Very 90s, not terrible but not something I enjoyed much. Has its moments, but reminds me of better bands. 3 Heard before? Some Owned: No, 111/444 (25%) Will I get: No

It's giving edgy E4 young adult show from the 2010s

rock solid

OK, but nothing special.

A pretty good pop-rock album from the middle of the 90s. It's definitely a sound from it's time with the grungy vibes and pop tunes. Great lyricism and some very catchy tunes to be heard. I'm not enthralled but I've added some songs to my playlist for repeat listens. Overall it's a pretty average 6/10.

Muy power

Such an awesome debut. It sounds so put together and slick, not surprising given the band’s producing credentials. But it takes so many interesting things from grunge and pop and hip Hop and you can hear its influence still. Aspects of Olivia Rodrigo’s new album reminded me of this. And Shirley Manson is just so cool, her voice draws you in. Great album.

I hear them being compared to smashing pumpkins, which I find odd.  Garbage has none of the authenticity, and they are overly hooky.  They can conjure up a decent track, but I can't find much genuine angst in this.  The pop and filler have gutted most of its soul. Not a fan of the package, but there are times I enjoy the vocals, which is a shame as I think it has great potential.  "Fix me now" is a hint at the possibility of some Björk style madness and it desperately needs it. Just a fake parlor otherwise which I don't like much.   I don't get the reviews.  It's not a pissed off theme or a super vixen and certainly doesn't avoid Britpop grunge bland either.  This is an average band that managed to push themselves to the max into commercial success.  They had a great package of vocals, synth, massive attack esk atmosphere and possibilities in every direction to make this a fight then lobbed the whole bloody thing in the bin!

Something about this album is so nineties. The soft girl-power punk-rock, the overuse of digital production techniques to "enhance" what should be a garage band sound. You can imagine almost any riff being used in some edgy teenage TV drama. At a few points it moves into some interesting areas. It is packaged up like mainstream crap but has enough genuine experimentalism to pique my interest here and there. Its an "almost" album that nearly manages to break out of its contextual limitations but doesn't quite make it. Cool listen that I can imagine will have an audience that it means a lot more to than it ever will to me.

This album sounds as it is, a "grunge album" created by producers. All the rulebook pieces are there and they are in correct places, and that's exactly why this fails to create any emotional response.

90's can be heard in this one, strongly.

#49 / 1089 Heard before? ✅ Revisit? ✅ I've a torn relationship with Garbage. On one hand, it's basically a super band and the songs are really well put together. On the other, there's a lot of calculated things in the music to make is as likely as possible to track the mid-90's hit market. While I understand that's not the full nor only truth, it is how I feel about this. There's also some relationship related baggage with this album. Anyway, Erikson/Marker/Vig know what they're doing, so putting all but the actualy music aside, I have to admit I kind of like the record. It's a weak 4, so I'll settle for 3/5

Says what it does on the lid

90s American alt-rock with UK trip-hop undertones is a total gimme.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would!

Canções rock/pop sem muita relevância.

Wow. I’m completely blown away with this one. You always hear how people say they wish they could wipe their brain of a certain album and listen to it again? This feels like one of those albums. From the intro in “Supervixen” it immediately grabs your attention. Each song is easily stuck in my head if not just for the melodies and rhythm. The vocals are truly mesmerizing almost putting you in a trance. This album actually felt like it was meant for me on this particular day. Each song was like a build up to a situation I’m going through. Full of anger, anxiety and fear.

Loved this album since day 1. About the only negatives I can really find is that it maybe loses a little bit of steam near the end, and I've never really liked the song "Milk". Still extremely strong album by one of my favorite bands of the 90s and early 00s. "Only Happy When It Rains" has always been my favorite song, but I'm starting to think that "Vow" might be better.

This was pretty solid; I liked the guitar tone here.

Never really listened to them before but this is solid

When this album came out I was really into it and felt like I was part of some kind of inside world. That feeling faded fairly quickly, and now this feels like a fairly lightweight and overly glossy milquetoast take on industrial music. Not bad, but not terribly interesting.

Not really my type of songs but I like a couple good ones very 2000s and I didn’t know any of these songs before.

I like it. Well produced, and good poppy hooks. The guitar work and vocals are polished and cohesive. It gets a bit noisy, but is overall appealing.

This kind of music compressed youth culture just like Vic’s production compressed the sound. At least where I lived, records like “Garbage” and “Mellon Collie” and “Smash” carved out a place for kids to come together - neither too rough nor too smooth, too radio-friendly or too arty, too rich or too poor. Probably too white - I grew up in a very white town. But this was fun and felt accessible to teens who just wanted to drive around and have beach bonfires and such in a way that the grunge stuff wasn’t, and it felt good to put down our mutual wariness, dye our hair, and partake in what felt like a shared generational experience, and Shirley Manson was a consummate host.

This brings pretty much everything great from the 90s together and does a very good job. Love the elements of trip-hop and pop in this overall very grungy sound, great performances and fantastic production, though the writing isn’t always top notch. 7.5/10

hard between a 2 and 3. Totally listenable but really not memorable. Soft 3

I definitely owned this on CD when it came out and enjoyed it. Sounds pretty dated now. Very much a grunge/electronica mash up. Production is amazing.

Good solid 90s album

This is very late 90s alt rock

An attempt has been made to write some colourful music. Not absolute garbage but garbage nonetheless.

Fourteen-year-old me would be giving this five out of five in between drafting marriage proposals to Shirley, but then 14-year-old me has not aged much better than a record that today sounds like it was put together as per an instruction manual. It'll always have a place in my heart, but no longer owns it as it once, if only briefly, did.
