Dit is SUPER!!!! Ik ben echt aan het genieten van elk lied
One of the Best albums of 1995
Really good album with no skips. I’ve been missing out for a long time on this one. Maybe not a perfect album but this is worthy of a 5.

Oh this one brings back so many memories .. blaring on my tape deck while Killer opening track sets the scene with hard driving electric guitars and electro synth sounds with a relentless electronic drum track creating an absolute assault on your listening senses. More than equal led by the electric storytelling and ferocity of delivery that is Shirley. She tapped some really subversive subject matter right from the get go diving into bdsm culture from the pov of the dominatrix , continuing the story with The second track Queer (before that was even a LGBTIQ I’d). ‘Come round to my house stick a stone in your mouth. You can always pull out if you like it too much. But you could get the sentiment with or without the leathers! The other standout is the final track Milk which is provides some contrast as a delicate and vulnerable yet strong with possibly a melotron backing track giving it a smooth dreamy texture. ‘I am lost and I am cruel .. but I’d be love and sweetness if I had you. I’m waiting I’m waiting for you’. In the middle there are songs for the lost: only happy when it rains, fix me now; songs for the spurned: dog new tricks, not my idea of a good time and songs for the vengeful: Vow. ‘I came to cut you up, I came to knock down I came around to tear your little world apart!’ Bottled up 20- something angst … covered in some pink feathers. Perfect five!
I really like. Love the harmonica

I feel as this album has a unique soft scent to it and im in love with the vibe of it. To top it off, the lyrics are really meaningful.
lll
chadore cet album..
Good songs, would revisit top song: As wide as heaven
Great album.
A new facet of rock for me, something like Radiohead but more feminine, and it's good. "Only Happy When It Rains" is a good song, in my opinion. "A Stroke of Luck" is good too. I didn't know this band, but I really sympathized with her an i like it The last song, Milk, it was pretty nice and cool
already knew i liked this a lot honestly. better than i remember it.
First song is really good Very good listen best album I have listened to on here so far!!
Garbage is allways bien
Mindblown this is a sonic youth and portishead its a perfect album not one single bad song.
Album #66: Garbage Genre (W): Alternative rock, dance-rock, power pop Singles: Vow, Only Happy When It Rains, Queer, Stupid Girl, Milk I have not listened to this album before. Thoughts?: I really loved the blending of electronic music with rock music, it makes for such an interesting sound that I’m all in for. I also love the vocal performances of the songs, and the dark lyricism. Favorite songs: All of it!!
Holy moly this is their debut album?? It's incredible! Amazing, couldn't fault it. So many bangers and such an amazing sound for the 90s era. I could never. I've definitely saved this album for future listens. No notes.
The queerest of the queer
SO GOOD
totally my kind of album, took a couple listens but loved it
Loved it! Great vibe
The definitive sound of the 90s a groundebreaking album fell in love with it when i heard it
Oh man, this takes me back. I played this over and over when I was younger. Maybe nostalgia is at play here but this album still really rocks. Shirley Manson has it going on, for sure. Still think my favorite song from this album is “Only Happy When It Rains.” Album 15, 13 March 2026
This is a great album. I only knew the singles, but the entire album is strong. I'm partial to Queer, Supervixen and As Heaven Is Wide.
amazing album i loved it
Dude. This album rips. Now I'm questioning why I slept on this band for so long... one of the most refreshing 90s albums I've come across in a long time. Shirley Manson is a vocal powerhouse, and this flavor of rock/pop has a timeless quality to it. What a wild blending of genres.
Fuckin fire, 5ish possible here. Ngl when I saw the band I was no thrilled but loved this top to bottom. Such emo, metric, dirty vibes, sinister almost. Very cool Also it's like all bangers and hits, I know like half the songs
Oh, so good.
Garbage, that is one killer debut. Familiar with several of the hits, but the “B” cuts are incredible - not a bad track on the album. Great musicianship, thought provoking lyrics, dark female vocals over well crafted guitar riffs and driving drum beats. Queer and As Heaven Is Wide musta pissed off the conservatives. (4.9*s) That’s an impressive alt rock, techno pop effort, will check out more Garbage.
I’d give a 6 rating if it was possible. Favourites: Milk, Not My Idea, Vow
Halfway through the opening song I thought I was going to hate it, instead I'm obsessed. Totally agreed Classically Trained, love the clean production, the menacing guitars & drum, the whispering snarling don't-give-a-fuck vocals. The movie in my head is jaded trenchcoat spies lurking in permanent grey cold war Berlin.
❤️
Album- Garbage (1995) Favorite song from album- Supervixen and Milk Album Rating- 9/10 5 Songs added to playlist
I would say this is pretty classic and Shirley is a bad a$$ is the best possible way. Their sound is hard and rough but in ways that make it great. Do I want to listen to this everyday, no. But when a day is tough or I am angry at the world I can turn this on love every minute of it.
This album is super rockin' from start to finish. Shirley has a cool factor that feels very unique to her. I love the dark edges she brings to her music, while still making it totally accessible and catchy. Not a bad song in the bunch, it's hard to believe this is a debut. I'm a big fan!
I love this!! Great chill 90s grunge, and great cadence for running or spin bike. Repeat listen!!
AYYYY I KNOW THIS ONE!!!
Ive already listened to this album. I love Garbage. Fantastic album, no skips on this one. 10/10
Garbage is the debut studio album by American rock band Garbage. It was released on August 15, 1995, by Almo Sounds. The album was met with critical acclaim upon its release, being viewed by some as an innovative recording for its time. It reached number 20 on the US Billboard 200 and number six on the UK Albums Chart, while charting inside the top 20 and receiving multi-platinum certifications in several territories.
Garbage, this was not. Thoroughly enjoyed this album - this is what happens when your musicians are also producers, and there's a clear vision for your sound. The whole thing is slick despite its grungy feel. If this is what electronic grunge is, sign me up. Also, Manson's vocals are just so, so good. Unrelated to my rating, but someone else in these reviews said that Butch Vig "went onto produce Nirvana's Nevermind album", which I cannot stress enough was four years before this.
banger after banger.. i especially love "queer" and "only happy when it rains"
Schön ein wenig Backlog zu haben auf dieser Liste wegen späteren Einsteigens, so kann ich bei Nachholen einfach auch mal gute Sachen anmachen. Das ist insgesamt einfach cool. Musik, Stimme, Vibe.
Haven't listened to this album in years. Brilliant, punchy, confident in their own sound. Stupid Girl is still my favourite track on this record.
Turns out Garbage is not, in fact, Garbage. Man this was great. Alt, moody, but still musical and totally catchy. Loved every single song on this album.
!!!!!
I nearly wore this album out when I got it. That Butch Vig sound -- realized, expanded and encapsulated -- shimmers darkly with this album. It's one that swerves dangerously without wrecking: The slight edge of electronics without veering too far into industrial; the smoky, strong presence of Shirley Manson -- vocals, inviting but controlled and always commanding -- run sultry without slipping into sleaze; and tracks that are pop-aware but slap your hand away at any notion of cheap accessibility. 4.5 -- we'll round it up.
I LOVED this album! The production is so gritty and the way that the bass pushes the songs forward was really enjoyable. This feels like cool girl music. Is that a thing?
Fantastic album!!!! 4.5 easy. So much good stuff ln it
Now THIS is how you do 90s angst. Love this genre with women’s vocals at the helm in particular and glad to now know Shirley Manson. This made me want to sneak out of my American suburban home via my upstairs bedroom window to go cruising for jocks to scare and some late night diner food with a badass girl gang. One of my favourite album artworks of the list so far too, very 90s but also feels very Brat-era current
I enjoyed this so much that I started exploring more of their material.
I squealed when I saw this was todays album
Really enjoyed this
day 4
amazing. loved it so much! classic 90's rock. 10/10
Meine favorite neue entdeckung durch diese app
The 90s had the best music LOVEE
Great album! I am a fan of Garbage and like their more recent work as well. But this album was a phenomenal debut. Shirley Manson is one of my favorite female vocalists. Favorites: Queer, A Stroke of Luck, Milk 5
Great album
Brilliant. ★★★★★
I knew and liked "Supervixen" "Only Happy When It Rains" and "Stupid Girl" off this, and those remain my faves on here. I had never listened to the whole thing, and I enjoyed it! Found I also especially enjoyed "Queer" "Not My Idea" and "Vow"
Lovely! Really great album. Favorites: Queer and As Heaven Is Wide.
Is Garbage the perfect evolution of pop rock? Was Jack the Ripper a sixty foot sea serpent from Scotland? Did I take this job for a quick buck? We may never know the answers to these questions...5
Love how Manson's vocals intertwine with the guitar work here. It's a lengthy album, but there are a good number of change ups and enough versatility to keep me on my toes. I love Milk.
No preamble this time Listening notes: -Wow, what an opening track. Huge bang -Lol 1995 is pretty late to be using "queer" seemingly exclusively to mean strange, and it such a sexually charged context. Banger nonetheless, no choice but to stan. -Poppy sounds, but not overdoing it. Combines poppy sounds with just enough edginess to be interesting Review: This is awesome. Gives a pop vibe to edgy punchy sounds. Has a nice creeping vibe. Crushed it. We love a new 5-star discovery. Review
After listening to this, I can see why some critics would call Manson the "Godmother of Rock". This thing rocks. Many albums in this list are ones that I would not want to immediately listen to again - this was not one of them.
Not just "pop grunge" or whatever they were called back in the day. This is a band with a style that is instantly recognized, that always evokes a feeling, and that you can both hum while skipping or sing low while brooding. Iconic.
Love this album! Takes me back to high school.
Awesome 10/10
debut album of garbage, a band i haven't heard of, but definitely well known in alternative music circles for pretty good reasons... their first album is a crazy cool collage of sound. a complete curveball. this album actually surprised me with how much i liked it. i love rock music that's stylish, spacey and a little filthy... i'm downright obsessed with how it sounds. maybe a bit of pop, maybe some rock... i'm also getting some mad trip-hop vibes as well when i listen to this. it pulls from all sorts of influences and creates this mad and hypnotizing collection of tracks, and after finishing it, i want to listen to it again.
Had a terrific time with this album, feels quite modern still with its pop-punk blend of styles. Never heard of garbage before but almost every song here really hit for me. Nothing absolutely blew me away but almost every song is just very good
This hit hard for me, its like strange but I like it a lot would listen to it again
As a Madtown local, this was a genuine surprise(wanted to hear them ever since my Librarian Tom recommended it). Loved the vocals! "Queer" gave a eerie-flamboyant vibe, which I never thought I'd dig. "Only Happy When It Rains" lives up to its popularity. "A stroke of luck" and "Milk" were some of my other favorites. Certified banger!
Time machine album for sure
This rocks. Grungy yet poppy enough to be catchy. Just fun all around. Lots of slappers throughout.
<3
Virkelig fedt album, rock/punk, minder om portishead!! God stemme
SÅ fedt!! 9,5/10 for mig, kæmpe fan, og det var lige mig
Great alt rock/triphop album, 4.5
Unbelievable how awesome this album is. It's got a punk rock vibe but there's such a deep musical element that makes it almost sound like a dance album. Each song is extremely catchy and has great hooks. You can't help but bob your head or sway to each track. Shirley Manson is awesome and I love her attitude even though she seems like almost unapproachably cool. It makes sense seeing that Butch Vig was in this band. Prior to this album, he also produced Sonic Youth, Smashing Pumpkins.....and of course the Nivana Nevermind album. So the talent was there to be successful, but then they found Shirley, who brought it all together. Fact is, it's not punk, it's not your traditional rock, it's not pop, it's kind of a mix of everything......which we all know "Purists" hate anything that isn't "pure". Wikipedia (I know, I know) has it listed as Power Pop, which I think is accurate. It's heavier music that appeals to a wider audience since it checks a bunch of boxes.
This came out when I was an angsty teenager, and there's probably not another album I've listened to more in my life than this one. It would be impossible to provide an impartial review here.
Garbage is... not garbage? 90s child me is very surprised, but this fuckin' slaps. Oh my God, it's cool.
This was the first time I actually listened to this group. When the song, "Stupid Girl" played, I realized that I had heard this group before and just kind of written them off. Once I listened to this album, there were two songs that I really liked enough to listen to them more than once and I just couldn't decide whether I liked "Only Happy When It Rains" as the tune was so upbeat and cherry compared with the song lyrics or the very evocative, "Milk". I will listen to this group again.
Great album - love only happy and stupid girl
Pretty biased with this one. I've listened to this on repeat for weeks at a time, and can blindly sing along to the whole thing. I think it's fantastic album that sounded unique. Only two songs I think slow momentum down; one of which being the final song and doesn't require to maintain momentum, but the lyrics of both are still great.
2025-10-24: I listened to it in company and I was a little too preoccupied with the other person's reactions to get into the album (and talking quite a bit and attending a couple of matters in between didn't help). Also, the pauses in the music in the first song (“Supervixen”) really jarred me, and for some reason I felt as if the volume in one of the tracks dropped compared to the previous one (perhaps in “As Heaven is Wide”), and I felt it might be a strange mastering choice at the same time I wondered if I had previously adjusted the volume without noticing or if my would system was going bonkers. 2025-10-26: I listened to the album again in better circumstances, through there were a couple of interruptions and I was quite tired. I didn't get as upset about the silences in the first song but I'm still not too sure about them. This time I felt a discrepancy of volume in another song but the sound levels reported by my watch remained very similar, so I think it is just a bit of sinus congestion and me overthinking it. I think this is an album I would like to come back to often; maybe I should give it a top score, but I'll leave that for the next time; or maybe not and I'll be having to take it down a notch.
I had only heard "Only happy when it rains" and "Stupid Girl" but couldn't have told you who the artist was, until now! What an incredible album. I can’t believe I haven’t heard of this band. I was pleasantly surprised with all the songs. Only two of them being possible skips “Milk” and “Dog New Tricks.” Even those are still super listenable and in a certain mood I’d probably listen to the full album. Trying to decide what is a 5/5 for me and I think if I would happily get the album on vinyl then it deserves it and I would definitely get this album on vinyl. Their openings are so good. I wanted to hear more from the jump, from the opening notes I was pulled in and wanted to see where it went. Overall “Stroke of Luck” was my favorite, felt it belonged in a secret agent spy movie like Atomic Blonde. I rank the songs as I listen and it was really hard to kick “Queer” down to the number two slot, just a really fun and interesting beat in that one. This one sounded way more contemporary then 1995 to me and it has a sort of timeless feel in my eyes. Some moments it reminds me of Eurythmics and others something from a modern rock alternative album. Very Pleasantly surprised by this album.
I've never even heard of the band Garbage before, and now I desperately want this on vinyl for background music. I'm not sure how I missed them, but I can immediately hear their influence throughout so many alternative rock and grunge bands I'm into. They had a sound similar to Smashing Pumpkins but shifted more towards Nirvana's grunge, but with a female vocalist who fucking crushed it. The songs didn't seem like lyrical genius to me at all (except for Stupid Girl, which was ironically one of my least favorite songs). Queer was my overall favorite despite my love of Vow. I highly recommend listening to the opening of Vow with headphones, the sound balancing is awesome, but then they add a tinnitus sounding effect that hurts the headphone experience.
I left this album in the 90’s but it was time for a revisit. Chics in grunge weren’t great but Garbage was the exception. The perfect mix of sultry aggression. One of the genres best albums.
This album was something I didn't know I needed
Love, love, love this album. It starts out with Supervixen, a great way to set the tone for the themes and the album itself, you can notice the chemistry in the group and the courageous lyrics, then comes Queer, with an empowering voice and aggressive sounds throughout, Only Happy When It Rains is the song most people associate the album with, it flows so well, you'll be enchanted all the way through, As Heaven Is Wide is a song that serves as a critic to the church, but the song itself feels mysterious and makes itself known through the sounds of the band, Not My Idea returns to the aggressive sound but punchier, A Stroke Of Luck slows down the tempo to soothe you with its lyrics and overall sound, Vow was the first song they released, it's dancier and makes you want to jump and sing with all your might, then Stupid Girl is the next most recognizable song and levels through the lyrics with a pleasant sound, Dog New Tricks feels like a scream to the masses, My Lover's Box is a more personal song that makes you feel everything, Fix Me Now flows almost the same with a different rock sounding band, and it finally ends with Milk, that closes out with a slow plea for love. Overall, it's a n experience with deep lyrics and songs for all kinds of people that will make you feel alive.
Stupid Girl is one of the coolest songs of the 90s. Have been obsessed with it for 30 years! Shirley Manson was the blueprint for do many cool rock front women - Karen O, Hayley Williams, Avril Lavigne... I love this band. Version 2.0 is probably my favorite of theirs but as a band they mean so much to me.
Really enjoyed, right up my vibe found a new artist I enjoy
There's that alt rock of the 90's that permeated my formative years. Love this album. Hearing it back after all these years. It still holds up. Saw them over the summer at a festival event. She may be even better live. Go see her, you won't be disappointed. As for the playlist? I think I might add two from this one to make up for the earlier garbage (no pun intended) that I had listened to earlier where nothing was good enough to put into a playlist. Stupid Girl and Only Happy When it Rains... Queer unfortunately barely misses out.
This is peak 90s pop rock. Such a sexy cool album. Top to bottom great. Shirley's voice is amazing. Love this album.
énorme coup de coeur
most inaccurate name for an album ever
Least representative album title of all time. Favourite Song: Only happy when it rains Honourable Mention: Supervixen, Fix Me Now, Stupid Girl
Incredible
Excellent
This was one of my favorite albums, and favorite bands for a while in the '90s. I collected their import singles and even bought Shirley's pre-Garbage stuff with Angelfish.
Wonderful album full of energy and grit. I wasn’t its biggest fan on my very first listen but every consecutive listen gave it another level of “this is fucking amazing”. The energy and tension of “Dog New Tricks” and “My Lover’s box” are unmatched, and not to speak ill of “Supervixen” but apart from a beat whose apparent stopping and starting just gives it more momentum , but the vocals on these ones are just so much harder. Even the quieter songs “Fix me now” and “Milk” carry the same sense of power as the rest. Honestly as close to perfect as an album can get , so , not garbage at all haha
One of the easiest 5 stars I’ve ever given. This was one of my earliest “adult” music loves, and an album I still turn back to time and time again. It still sounds super fresh over 30 years later, with great songwriting and production. One of the all time greats in my books and a band and album that has stayed with me for decades.
Milk is a great song despite what Andy says
peak
I challenged myself to listen to the 20th anniversary super deluxe 2015 remaster of this album on Apple Music, and I'm so glad I did. What a fantastic find. My favorites from the original project were: "Queer," "Only Happy When It Rains," "Stupid Girl," "Dog New Tricks," and "Milk." Out of those, "Queer" stood out as my favorite, and "...When It Rains" was, of course, a classic I knew but never had explored the artist deeper before than now. In terms of the remixes, I enjoyed, "Stupid Girl (Danny Saber Remix)," "Vow (Tuesday Night Club Mix)," and "Fix Me Now (Alternate Subbass Mix." Although, I truly enjoyed everything off of this project, including all of the remixes and remasters. I can't believe I got through a 5+ hour album and genuinely enjoyed all of it. I loved the original grunge era that the original tracks speak to, especially from the female lead's POV, but what I admired even more was how the remixes and remasters incorporated club elements, house beats, and four-on-the-floor energy without sacrificing the grit and angst that the original tracks had. What a gem. Truly worth the time commitment.
Almost epitomically 90s.
Great sounding album and two hit songs. Emo at its best.
I listened to this album a few years ago and really liked it, but for some reason never listened to it again, so I'm glad to finally relisten to it. This album has so many great choruses and hooks, a lot of really memorable parts. There are a few stinkers on here, but the good songs make up for it. Low 5.
lots of good songs on this one. I thrashed it to death when it first came out, delighted to be prompted to listen again. Took grunge and combined it with most punk synth. Reminded me of Curve....
The centre of my teenage universe and the making of my listening tastes for many years to come. Fundamental 90's girl album - forgot how much this was a part of me - love love love
Soundtrack to my reading angsty young adult vampire novels when I was a teen. 5/5 would listen to again
Pretty dang good really
I forgot how much i enjoyed this album when it came out!
Loved this! Grunge sound, but very layered and dramatic. Electronic layers, weird sounds and chaotic noise, but it all comes together in a stunning (and somewhat horrific) wave. Vocals are gorgeous. I can hear its influence in some of the songs I love by bands like Paramore ... but these feel darker, more tense, varied, and yet more cohesive? Listening to it as an album, it holds together. I didn't skip any, and was surprised that each of these very weird songs got its hooks into me. Song structures? -
An awesome album, this band should have gone much further. Still gives me tingles
very nice, not sure yet if there are any songs there that i like more than the others, but makes a lot of sense as an album
This was pretty fun, I had only heard the hits before, but this was refreshing for the 90s. 5* Highlights: only happy when it rains, queer, stupid girl
I like it
Favorites: Supervixen, Queer, Only Happy When It Rains, As Heaven Is Wide, A Stroke of Luck, My Lover's Box, Milk
Blending 90s pop with 90s alternative in such a accessible way is what made this album a breakthrough in the 90s and it's still what keeps it fresh to this day. -Germ Never listened to the album in full, but it's just banger after banger. Singer is amazing, and the band manages to blend so many genres and makes each one their own. - mitona
Great!
Dando volteretas. Uno de los albumes más sólidos que he escuchado en mi vida. Flechazo instantáneo desde la primera canción. Es un espectáculo hacer 12 temas y que ninguno baje del 8. Estaba aplaudiendo y me levanté a cagar literalmente. Estaré los próximos días obsesionado con esto, muchas gracias. 9.3/10->5/5
I freakin’ love this record. Possibly the most 90s thing that was ever made. Were they commercially fabricated? Sure. But Shirley Manson at least had genuine talent and heart behind her performances and she was a big part of my adolescent sexual awakening so I guess that biases me.
Oh I love this album
How did I only know one song from this album? I love it. Garbage provides charismatic vocal delivery layered over dark, hazy atmosphere. And the blending of genres stops it from being repetetive. The first half flies by effortlessly, and though the second does drag a bit, I'm willing to ignore it. Also, having Only Happy When It Rains in such a gloomy album is an ironic statement of respectable proportions.
Solid record! Hadn’t listened to it in ages, lots of bangers
This album had me completely hooked the moment Shirley Manson opened her mouth on the first track. It was sexy, blended genres seamlessly, and had so much diversity that, frankly, it didn't even need to be good. The talent speaks for itself on this one. I would add every song to my playlist (and did actually do so) in a heartbeat, and I want nothing more than to continue listening to this band. This was so phenomenal, and I truly can't believe I've never heard of this band before now. I know this band is not "traditionally rock", but this album made me feel the same way I feel when I listen to my favorite female rock vocalists in modern day music. It's timeless, truly.
grandios
This is a classic album from my teenage youth. "Only Happy When It Rains", "Queer" and "Stupid Girl" are phenomenal singles, the opening track "Supervixen" is the perfect start and final song "Milk" is a magnificent come-down. The album is meaty and powerful. Love it as much as I did in my teens.
Only happy when it rains: definitive.
I have always been a fan of Garbage but this entire album was such a treat. 21 tracks too!
love this album so much. They were the opener at my 2nd concert. Opened for The Smashing Pumpkins in 1996. The crowd went wild when her mic stand with the pink thing on it came out. It’s just as good now as it was then.
Amor por los 90
funkily rollicking melancholic psychedelic grunge pop
This is an album that I will keep on repeat! Pop rock from 90s with interesting lyrics an intense rhythmic
Fantastic album. There was something different about them when they showed up. Great sound, groovy basslines.
This kicked off a whole afternoon of ‘95/‘96 albums that were great. I forgot that the non-hits on this are sometimes better than the hits.
Great
I love the slight noise/industrial sound of this album.
Love this album. Five count en five stars
Absolute banger. What they mean when they say all killer no filler. Their most famous hits are on here but don't sleep on the other songs on this album. It's all greatness.
This was fantastic. Such a different sound.
Hard rocking.
Queer
I really enjoyed this.
Fav: Queer; Only Happy When it Rains; Not My Idea; Vow; Dog New Tricks; Fix Me Now
Garbage (1995) is an easy 5/5 for me. I was 15 when it came out, and it instantly became one of those albums that helped shape my taste and outlook. It was sleek, dark, sarcastic, and seductive, capturing the exact mix of rebellion, emotional intensity, and self-awareness I was beginning to explore. My best friends were obsessed with it too, and we kept it in rotation well into our university years. The production is pristine but gritty, full of layered loops, grunge guitars, and trip-hop textures that made the entire sound feel addictive and slightly dangerous. A huge part of that is Butch Vig. As both producer and drummer, he built the album with obsessive attention to detail, blending grit with polish in a way that gave it lasting edge. Shirley Manson’s presence is magnetic. She moves effortlessly between icy detachment and raw confession. At the time, she was everything: smart, tough, sexy, and completely uninterested in being likable. The lyrics struck a nerve, walking a line between nihilism and vulnerability. Lines like “Do you have an opinion? A mind of your own?” felt like a direct challenge. The sound doesn't stay in one lane either. It pulls from alt-rock, industrial, shoegaze, electronica, and pop, blending them seamlessly. This was moody music you could dance to, scream to, or just get lost in, and that emotional versatility is exactly why it still resonates.
Legit one of my favorite albums of all time. When I first saw them in concert I thought I was just taking Jenny to go see a concert that she liked but when I saw them I was blown away. I honestly wasn't sure how they were making all the sounds that they were making on stage. It was amazing. I really enjoy the soft music and then they hit that wall of guitars. You can tell the drummer is an amazing producer as well as a musician. He produced many amazing albums from the 90s including Nevermind.
Still really good all these years later.
Excellent album. Easily one of the best rock albums of the 90's.
Call me a racoon because I love Garbage. Where has Garbage been all my life? Give me more Garbage.
Una cazzo di hit
Absolute classic. Loved it throughout my youth already.
Maybe the best 90’s alt/grunge album I’ve listened to.
A true gem of the 90s!
Debut Album? Did not know that, but no matter ... it's good! This could be/should be somewhere in my regular rotation. I did have the pleasure of seeing them in concert, with my daughter!!!
Day 4. I feel weird giving 2 albums a 5 star in a row. I was listening to this album trying to find a single reason why it shouldn't be 5 stars, but I couldn't. First of all, I am completely unfamiliar with "Garbage" save for an old Guitar Hero cover, so I had no idea what I was getting into with this. What I got was an album without a single bad song. It's a freaking Grunge band with a Scottish Female singer, what a crazy combination!! My personal favorite song on this album is "Queer". When an album is so good that it makes you do a deep dive on the entire band, you know you've done well. Way to go Garbage!!
'If flesh could crawl My skin would fall From off my bones and run away from here' Best lyrics of this whole album.
I love female vocalists for rock bands it’s like peace on earth
Really fucking good. I didnt get the first half or so, but the back half opened my mind up. Thumb emoji.
Great Friday listen. I don’t have to think much about the rating, for this is one of my favorite albums from the mid-90s. Top Tracks: Supervixen Queer Only Happy When It Rains Not My Idea Stupid Girl 9/10
I was intimidated by the length of this album before I listened but now I just want more and more.
One of the first albums I bought for myself, have always always loved it
5. Top!
i think if you replaced shirley Manson with a dude i would hate this so maybe I'm just a misandrist
Stupid Girl 😍😍
I swear that music peaked twice in recent history. First, in the 60’s-70’s folk singer songwriters (which tends to be generally loved) and then again with 90’s alt rock (which doesn’t get as much love at it deserves!). I love the whole sound that comes from this album. The music can get crunchy at times but holds back when it benefits the song. The vocals are wonderfully apathetic in sound. It only took a couple of songs for me to know this was going to score very highly, and the rest of the album held true.
Hell yeah, I do listen to garbage. Garbage to idealne połączenie brudu i przebojowości, alternatywy i popu, melancholii i zadziorności. Shirley Manson hipnotyzuje swoim głosem – czasem chłodnym, czasem pełnym ukrytej wrażliwości – podczas gdy warstwa muzyczna pulsuje industrialnym rytmem, grunge’owym brudem i elektroniką. Słabe 5
Fantastic from beginning to end. I've heard most of the songs before but as heaven is wide was new to me and might be my favorite garbage song now.
Yay I get to write the cliche album project comment!!! This is the reason I’m doing this, to discover these absolutely banging albums that I would never have heard otherwise. 5* babyyyyyy
very emotional, very magical. the last track got me in tears 100/10
Garbage? Exactly the opposite.
Okay, look. I'm being aggressively subjective in my ratings. I'm not a professional music critic, I'm not preparing a chronicle of important developments in music history. I am but one middle-aged bisexual woman documenting her own personal taste. That said... You know how I figured out the bisexuality thing? The music videos for Only Happy When It Rains and Stupid Girl made me feel funny. The album with Queer on it helped me realize that I'm queer. This album is so significant to my personal history, I was honestly a bit surprised to see it come up in the generator! I love this album to bits, obviously. 30 years later my youthful crush on Shirley Manson has faded into a warm fuzzy memory, but the music will never get old. This is absolutely my idea of a good time.
Sounds like the perfect CD to throw on at a party in the 90's. Fucking banger rock/dance tracks. God damn so many bangers
huh jako zanimljiv album, prva je malo preintenzivna al dalje je worth another listen
What a vibe this album is! Not my go-to genre, but absolutely loved this. I'm not usually for high pitched female voices, which is why I contemplating giving it 4* but the fact I left them on for a solid hour longer than the album makes me bump it to a 5.
This was one of those albums that I was always interested in as a teenager, but never bought it, because, well… broke teenager. And it’s probably better I didn’t, because I don’t know that I would have liked this when it came out in 1995. 30 years later, I love this. There is a lot of anger here, but a lot of other emotions as well that 12 year old me wouldn’t have been nearly in tune with or known how to process. Musically, it’s like the perfect blend of rock/grunge and electronic. It’s done really well with tons of catchy riffs but also driving beats and bass. Big fan of this.
Well, it was one of my fave albums back in the day, so...
This was one of my favorite albums as a teenager and I was hoping it would hold up. Thankfully it absolutely has. I think Garbage went a bit downhill after this album but I could hardly fault them for getting worse over time as this is one of the best examples of the 90's rock transition from everything being analogue on "must be played on real live instruments all the time" to becoming more accepting of programmed drums, synths used beyond playing piano parts, vocal manipulations, etc. Aside from the genre evolution, the songs are just great, and Shirley's voice is that perfect mix of feminine and aggressive. She's just at home in the slow melodic "Stroke of Luck" and "Milk" as she is in the much more powerful "Supervixen", "Vow" and "Stupid Girl". All of Butch Vig's production is stellar here. It's such a clean album from every perspective - not a note wrong or mistimed in the whole thing. "Only Happy When it Rains" is one of my favorite songs from anyone. What an expression of the universal feeling of being miserable and accepting, even thriving, in it. Still a lot of love for this one, I'm so glad it's just as good as I remembered.
10/10 no notes. And all-time classic and favorite!!
Awesome!
What a great album! Iconic album of the 90s, a band that has not changed members ever. Songs not just the singles that are great, whole album felt cohesive.
really good alt rock
That’s a great 5. I’ve heard of Garbage, but outside of the name, I barely knew anything about them. Perhaps most embarrassingly of all, I didn’t even realize the band had a female lead singer. My immediate apologies to Shirley Manson – her stage presence comes to life on this album, and she’s got it in spades here in an undeniably cool way. Hell, my apologies to the entire band; this feels like quintessential 90s stuff that should’ve been on my radar a long time ago, but better late than never. It’s very weird to say “ahead of its time” for 1995, but in a weird way, this does feel a bit ahead of its time, in terms of the wide variety of soundscapes and genres tackled through this album – a lot of this is based in 90s UK & US rock, and it never strays too far from that core, but it touches on nearly every base within that core. There’s trip-hop influence, Britpop influence, the occasional 80s structure with a 90s edge, a bit of UK house & electronica, forays into grunge & industrial… if you can think of it, it’s on this album, and it usually succeeds really well at integrating those styles into their own sensibilities. I would argue this level of variety didn’t really come into vogue for another… 6 or 7 years, maybe? I could be entirely ignorant about the mid to late-90s, but people were really chasing the ghost of Kurt Cobain for a while. Ultimately, this blew away any expectations I had for it. Supervixen is an interesting tone setter with great production. Queer is just a Billie Eilish song (in the best way possible). Only Happy When It Rains is a great meta track. As Heaven Is Wide is just a kickass song that could totally work as a video game track (and it literally was in Gran Turismo 1). Not My Idea feels like a blend of industrial rock with Alanis Morrissette’s sensibilities. A Stroke of Luck is a great trip-hop influenced track with some fun juxtaposition in the soundscape. Vow is the most catchy way to describe visceral revenge that I can remember. Stupid Girl has the structure of an 80s track with a 90s edge, and I really dug it. Dog New Tricks & My Lover’s Box are the only two tracks where I went “meh” on, but they’re still fine. Fix Me Now is admittedly generic as hell, but it just clicked for me. Milk feels like a James Bond title theme, in a really smooth way. I loved it, what more can I say? Very easy 5, and I’m mad at myself for not listening to anything by Garbage earlier. I refuse to make the obvious joke.
Una locura, me encantó. Grounge de mina, no había escuchado antes. Queer tiene alta letra, me encanta la melodía.
Oh I really liked this. I only knew a song or two, but enjoyed this one more the others recently.
Now -this- is what I'm talking about! Rocking guitars, a powerful voice, and just straight up attitude dripping off the tracks. Honestly a perfect album, no further notes needed.
Excellent vibe and sound. Cuts like a knife but also accessible through a layer of smooth synths and vocals. Have revisited again already. The trashest of the trash.
This has all that was good about ‘90s rock: talent, originality, and strong vocals.
Great album overall with several breakout hits
Loved the whole thing. My tween self wanted to be Shirley Manson but I was too shy. 5/5
I love this girly grunge-pop sound and the bubblegum-goth vibe.
One of my favorite albums. Not a single song on the entire album that I don't like. 5/5
So gay.
Her angst, blended with sexuality and brutal lyrics, is great. It’s smart, edgy, raw, and powerful. There are so many solid songs back-to-back that it just keeps getting better.
Love the pacing and roughness / rockish. Slaps. And they even still make music and tour!
This album is Garbage. 4.5 stars
Milk is one of the sexiest songs ever!
I can't objectively rate this album -- came along at a transitional point in my life when I was just getting out of graduate school and starting to "adult." I wore this album out. My fondest wish was to be broken by Shirley Manson. Something about this album just hit the sweet spot between U2 and Nine Inch Nails that I needed at the time. Listening to it always makes me happy, whether or not it's raining.
Adore this album. Seen them thrice. At one point had every song memorized.
Not hot garbage
Honestly, I don't think that Garbage is the right title for this album, I think that a much better name for this album would be Pure Gold because that's exactly what this album is. I don't think i was expecting a whole lot from this album, just maybe a 3 star worthy rock album but this album blew all my expectations away from it's first song. The guitars are the right balance of heavy and melodic and Manson's vocals seriously added a lot to this album too as well as all the cool production quirks. Also, every song on this album is a banger and there is not even a bit of garbage which is ironic since it's the band's name. I've got nothing left to say, this album is just amazing. Best Song: As Heaven Is Wide Worst Song: Queer
Well, I've already heard this self-titled debut from Garbage before this journey. They're a 90s alternative group where three of the members - Butch Vig, Duke Erikson, and Steve Marker - have had prior experience producing for various artists. The three recruited Shirley Manson for vocal duties, and together they sought to blend pop music with different genres. The result heard on this album is that each track feels unique in its mix. From the laid-back trip-hop of "Queer", to the straightforward electric grunge of "Only Happy When it Rains", to the groovy drum-and-bass of "Stupid Girl", the band built a rich soundscape of tunes off of samples and loops brought to their jam sessions. All the while, every member plays effectively; Butch with his driving beats, Steve and Duke with their good guitar hooks, and Shirley singing the lyrics the band collectively penned from shared dark experiences. I understand that not everyone may be into the genre-hopping style Garbage employs, as the quality can vary track by track. I also realized by "Not My Idea" that Shirley Manson's contralto vocals are an acquired taste as she can teeter between sultry and discomforting. But make no mistake, Garbage is not "garbage", as easy a joke as it would be. They're a fun group with a bit of edge to their pop to make them stand out. This debut album of theirs is worth a listen if you're curious. Update 4/7/2025: I ended up relistening to Garbage's debut over a hundred albums later in my journey. Upon reflection, I realized that I didn't have much of an issue with this album per my original review. Sure, it might sound a little dated, but the variance in song structure paired with the synth textures, distorted guitars, layered production, and Manson's vocals balanced between vulnerable and fierce culminate in an atmosphere that was enjoyable all the way through. There's an argument to be made that Garbage peaked with their first album, but even then, what a high peak to come off of.
just garbage, man. From the silent gaps on Supervixen to the distortions on Stupid Girl, and much in between, a very rewarding listen. Milk is my favourite song. For some reason, I don't really like "only happy when it rains", despite it's popularity. I remember seeing this album as a kid as my parents owned a CD, had never listened to it before though. 4.5 star and not pure perfection as the 5 star suggests, but nonetheless, a fantastic listen.
One of my favorite bands in the 90s, I still go back to this album today.
Never listened to this one before. Was peripherally aware of Garbage because they are right in my radio phase but couldn't name any of their songs. Really loved this album! A lot of the singles were great but just your kinda classic grungy 90s rock.
I wish I could say ‘this title is accurate lol’ and get on with my day but this is actually really good
Love this album.
Almost no skips! (Sorry, “My Lover’s Box”. You’re half good at least.) The big singles are the weakest songs imo. Such a great album. High school me won’t let me give it anything less than a five.
A Stroke of Luck
Top stuff
First time I heard them and I was missing out truly! Trip hop, fun and excellent
Megachill
Beautiful voice, different genre than the albums listened to so far.
LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOOOO. legendary pull supervixen- i love it. i think overplayed it but 7 or 8 queer- <3. 8 only happy when it rains- 10 bitch fuck all yall as heaven is wide- 9 or 10 not my idea- 6 or 7 a stroke of luck- 6 or 7 vow- 7 stupid girl- 8 or 9 dog new tricks- 6 my lovers box- 7 fix me now- 6 milk- 6 or 7 favorite track- only happy when it rains or as heaven is wide. me without this album: 💀. also id love to give a big shout out to my friend agnes.
Great debut album, not a bad track.
a sound coming together so strongly it honestly makes me a little mad. so many bands spend albums finding out who they really are. Garbage were sure -- and right -- on their first album. bubblegrunge guitars and Hacienda beats go together like cheddar and grapes; maybe it's not your first inclination, but when you do it for the first time you just can't stop. i guess you could call it a "grebo" album, but the reason people prefer "Stupid Girl" over "Unbelievable" by EMF or "Right Here, Right Now" by Jesus Jones (now there was a band) is because "Stupid Girl" has butch vig and those other songs have some asshole from Britain in a pre-war town, blissfully deceiving themselves that the Teen Spirit Bomb will never drop and destroy their little lives. Garbage are post-apocalyptic warriors, dressed in the clothes of the burnt past and the chains of the new world, ready to take on the ruins.
Yes to Garbage.
One of those bands/albums I’m very surprised not to have ever listened to considering they sound like a mix of 90s artists/bands that I love (PJ Harvey, smashing pumpkins, portishead, the breeders) Vocals are great Some very cool riffs
Uuiuu
Nostalgia for a lot of the songs on here. Very enjoyable and more of their hits than I expected on this. 4 or 5 *
this is almost a greatest hits itself! Great tunes and the perfect mix of beats and loops and guitars and cocky vocals. Deserves way more praise than it gets.
YAY!!!! OMG this album has so many fucking memories tied to it. Incense, glow in the dark stars, getting high, summer, Amanda, just moving here, riding the uta bus to work and back, somehow Einstein Bagels. lol Good solid album here! 10 million stars.
Honestly really enjoyed this
What an album. Standouts include Supervixen, Queer, Only Happy When It Rains, As Heaven Is Wide, And Stroke Of Luck. But really, all the tracks are fantastic.
Banger
Hade bara hört tre låtar tidigare men här finns ju ytterligare en handfull låtar som är bra.
01) Supervixen - 10,0 02) Queer - 10,0 03) Only Happy When It Rains - 10,0 04) As Heaven Is Wide - 10,0 05) Not My Idea - 10,0 06) A Stroke Of Luck - 10,0 07) Vow - 10,0 08) Stupid Girl - 10,0 09) Dog New Tricks - 10,0 10) My Lover's Box - 10,0 11) Fix Me Now - 10,0 12) Milk - 10,0 TOTAL: 10,0 (100/100) Current ranking: 3/231 Finally an album that will get five stars from me, I don't even have to listen to it. But I want to, just like I've wanted to for the last 28 years that I've had it on cassette tape. I bought it in 1996 on my graduation trip to Spain and we've been hanging out ever since. The best songs on the album, in my opinion, are "Stupid Girl", "Queer" and "Milk". My dream came true in 2019 when I listened to Garbage live at the InMusic festival. They did not disappoint and Shirley Manson was and remains one of the main idols of my teenage days. A musical icon! This album goes into my personal top 10 of all time.
Good stuff.
Amazing
absolutely loved this one and probably wouldn't have sought it out on my own. we need more nasty fucked up women making music please.
this album rocks. i knew only happy when it rains and stupid girl going into it but found a bunch of new great tracks. interesting lyrics, unique sounds and song structure between tracks, and vibes are on point. this is exactly what I want from 1001 albums! favorites: supervixen, queer, only happy when it rains, a stroke of luck, stupid girl, dog new tricks, milk
Dark, sexy, dangerous - Black and Pink.
Garbage's debut album is one of my favorite albums of all time. From beginning to end, it is fantastic.
"If God's my witness, God must be blind." Fuzzy, grimy, catchy, and charismatic. The riffs are gigantic but manage to not smother the lyrics or Shirley Manson's performances. It's hard to listen to this over 20 years later and not hear the massive influence Garbage has had, from their contemporaries to new artists. In my opinion, this is a knock-out 90s rock record. Highlights: Supervixen, Only Happy When It Rains, As Heaven Is Wide, A Stroke Of Luck, Vow, Stupid Girl, Fix Me Now
Been quite a few years since I've last listen to this; strangely I found myself knowing most of the lyrics. A classic from my teenage years.
Favorite songs: Only Happy When It Rains, As Heaven is Wide, Queer.
This was amazing, every song was a banger, it was just the right length, cant wait to listen too again
One of my go to bands back then. Not my favorite album though. I mean you’ve got Butch Vig! He had his hands in Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins and Sonic Youth. Can’t go wrong with that guy. Love Shirley too; she makes them so unique.
No idea what it would be coming in, but this really surprised me! Nice variety of pop, alt rock, industrial.. Clear vocals that have a certain angsty edge, I love female voice over heavier music. Each song has an interesting hook that draws you in. Great production value, has a 90s flavor but does sorta transcend the era in some ways. I’m sure I heard this back then but can’t be sure. Some songs maybe weren’t as commercially successful but nothing here is “bad” in my opinion.. An unashamed 5/5 from me
Such an amazing album!
definitely vibed with this album, love the style, love the variety from song to song, great lyrics, great vocals, great instrumentals. added the whole thing to my library. definitely my jam and i need to listen to more music like this
FUCK YES!!!
The Downward Girlboss
Classic 90's grunge.
Not garbage, this was pretty good. Pretty unique sound - I'm not sure what specific genre this is, but I loved it and would probably enjoy more music like this. I need to get ahold of my rating inflation but I liked this enough to give it yet another 5. Had many favourites, including Supervixen, Queer, Only Happy When It Rains, A Stroke of Luck, Stupid Girl, Dog New Tricks, and Milk.
Grungy, queer, awesome
One of the few albums to pique my interest in the mid 90's. When I heard 'Stupid Girl' I instantly loved it, then followed by 'Happy When it Rains' which was equally good. The whole vibe of the album took me back a few years to a time before Britpop. It reminded me strongly of Curve, who mastered this sort of sound four years previously. Then throw into the mix, some of the best the U.S. had to offer over the past decade, such as Pixies and Nirvana, but watered down to make a great alt pop record. As Butch Vig is involved, I had suspicions that the band were manufactured, and probably were but I didn't and still don't mind. Starting with the immense loud/quiet 'Supervixen' and finishing with the James Bondesque 'Milk', everything in between is crafted with just the right amount of angst, anger and melancholy which hit all the right notes for me at the time. A 5 star debut.
Just kept listening to this and enjoying it. Picked up more interesting thing on each re listen. It’s close but it’s a 5 from me dawg.
Better than expected. Great 90s rock. Solid all the way through
Being born in 1990 it's hard for me to estimate the popularity of an album at it's release. Is garbage underrated or did I miss their glorydays? This selftitled album deserves to be spoken in the same breath as other alternative classics from bands like Smashing Pumpkins, REM and Jane's Addiction... or does it allready do?
Perfection in 90s
I would make a joke about the name, but others funnier than I have already beaten me to it. Looking at the date of this album, it seems it really helped set the stage for the next decade. Favorite track: "A Stroke of Luck."
Decidedly not garbage
I somehow never listened to a full Garbage album even though I loved the singles growing up. Really enjoyed this one. Good alt-rock but with pop hooks and some electronica elements. I like the darkness of the lyrics and the angst Shirley Manson brings. "Not My Idea" is like a darker cousin of No Doubt's "Just a Girl." It's also clear that they were influenced by bands like The Cure (I wonder if that's where Shirley's affinity for the do-do-dos comes from) and My Bloody Valentine — lots of swirly, distorted guitars, a ton of layered sounds, some droning, shoegaze-esque elements, and a willingness to experiment with sound and push the genre forward. The piano line at the end of "Stupid Girl" is straight out of Nine Inch Nails' playbook. I'd probably give this closer to a 4.5 if I could, but I'm cool with rounding up to 5. Need to explore more of their discography (especially since Cherry Lips is a fantastic song from a different album). 4.5/5 but gets a 5 for rounding
classic 90's throwback
Noice!
Wait, these guys are American? Since when was Edinburgh in the US? I guess that just goes to show that Shirley Manson was well and away the only part of this band I was interested in. Anyway, Shirley seems to have evaded all of the controversy that came up around her sister, Marilyn, and that's a good thing. While Antichrist Superstar was a great album made unlistenable, Garbage remains a very good album, with the most controversial thing happening in the nearly thirty years since its release being Ms Manson taking on a somewhat unfortunate role on the The Sarah Connor Chronicles. The album still holds up, and while at the time I may have preferred some of their contemporaries, Garbage have managed to outlive most of them, so good show.
Holy shit this thing rules, prob gonna get this on vinyl soon. This is 100% my vibe. Love that there's some hits from this album as well.
Loved it when it can out, still do.
Hadn't listened to this since I was a teenager, good times.
Probably my favorite Garbage album. 2.0 comes pretty close however. Great stuff.
Discovering Garbage (and Shirley Manson) as a teen was a revelation. Love this album, love Garbage, 90’s rock doesn’t get better than this.
I’ve always been partial to the band. It reminds me of my college years.
this album is connected to so many wonderful memories. but nostalgia is a toxic impulse (you can never go back). shirley manson was one of my first celebrity crushes.
I love this! I need more Garbage in my life. I love the lead singer’s voice too.
Shirley Manson pls notice me
4.5
Definitely not garbage :) Excellent riffs, mesmerizing soundscapes, and I love Shirley's voice. Abrasive yet catchy. Very fun album that I can't find any flaws in.
I liked it a lot
Fantastic debut. Fans of The Kills will probably appreciate it.
Beautiful in lyrics and sound. Groundbreaking grungepop. Striking immediately and never stops.
Not Garbage
I loved this. Consistency reigned this album. I had no favorite songs because there was never a moment I didn’t enjoy what I was hearing.
Awesome. Need to download and listen again.
Für mich ein five Star Album: Es holt mich immer wieder in in die guten 90iger zurück.
You know how people feel about Brie Larson singing that tiny bit of Black Sheep in Scott Pilgrim? That’s how I feel about this entire album. I immediately became obsessed after the first song and it only got better from there. This album is my personality now and I’m not sorry about it.
Where has this album been all my life? I've only heard "Only Happy When It Rains" before, so I was expecting an album of poppy alt-rock, but this unexpectedly dives into an atmospheric blend of industrial and trip hop.
This was honestly awesome, going in the rotation.
Well it's no surprise that Garbage is great, but going back to their debut album really makes me see how innovative they really were. So much of the early and mid 00s rock was taking inspiration from what Garbage was doing here. It's otherworldly. The ambient atmosphere of each song, the killer drum line, and if course Shirley Manson's incredibly unique vocal style. Everything just sounds awesome and deliberate and exactly how it should.
Epic tunes
Super great. Takes me back to my teenage years.
One of the great debut albums. As we used to say back in the day, all killer, no filler. Let it be noted that Shirley Manson is one of the finest front women in rock.
My first 5 star album!!
Awesome album through and through! Alt rock with dance pop mixed in. Love me a female lead vocalist as well!
This is one from high school me
