Album Summary
Myths of the Near Future is the debut album by English rock band Klaxons. It was released on 29 January 2007 through Polydor Records. Following their debut single, the band coined the term "new rave" to refer to their sound; not long after their second single, they signed to Polydor Records. They recorded their debut album with James Ford of Simian Mobile Disco at The Premises and Parkgate Studios. Myths of the Near Future, which takes its title from a poem, is a science-fiction concept album about the future; its sound recalled the dance-punk works of Bloc Party and Franz Ferdinand. Some of the song's titles and lyrics are literary references to the works of J. G. Ballard, William S. Burroughs and Thomas Pynchon. "Magick" was released as the lead single from Myths of the Near Future in October 2006, followed by "Golden Skans" in January 2007. The album's released was promoted with two headlining tours of the United Kingdom bookending a North American trek in April 2007. That same month, "Gravity's Rainbow" was released as the album's third single; "It's Not Over Yet" followed in June 2007. Various festival appearances were made, leading to a West Coast tour of the United States. Bassist Jamie Reynolds broke his ankle, which saw the cancellation of some shows, and Joe Daniel of the Violets covering for him while he sang from a wheelchair. "As Above, So Below" was released as the album's fifth and final single in November 2007. Myths of the Near Future received generally favourable reviews from critics, some of whom praised the musicianship, though others were dismissive of the rave tag. The album reached number two in the UK Albums Chart; it also charted in France, Italy, Japan and the Netherlands. "Magick", "Golden Skans", "Gravity's Rainbow" and "It's Not Over" all charted on the UK Singles Chart, with "Golden Skans" peaking the highest at number seven. Myths of the Near Future was certified platinum in the UK and silver in Ireland, both in 2007, and won the Mercury Prize that same year. "Golden Skans" was certified platinum in the UK in 2021.

Good album, but I couldn’t understand why it was so important.
I don’t think the Klaxons fully made it over here in North America; for every 30 times I heard Time to Pretend on the radio, I heard Gravity’s Rainbow or As Above So Below maybe once. This meant I actually appreciated when one of their songs came on and I never developed a knee jerk reaction to change the radio station when I heard the first few notes of their songs. That said, they also didn’t have as much staying power and I don’t think I’ve even thought of them since 2009 or so. I enjoyed listening to this again today. Early 2000s indie electro-pop sound. A bit closer to the electro-punk side. Maybe like electro-pop-punk? Definitely not my favourite genre of music any more, but I did go through a bit of an early 2000s indie phase last year and dove back into a bunch of their contemporaries like Sunset Rubdown, Destroyer, Frog Eyes, Wolf Parade, etc. Might add Klaxons to that list next time I feel like revisiting these bands.
Great noise. -1 point because one of them was a dick to my friend's sister when they broke up. +1 because Magick is great and there's a bunch of songs with literary references and you don't get enough of that kind of thing nowadays.
Fun and exciting! I know there were a few indie bands with a similar sound in this era, but I feel like they executed it with more energy and better musicianship than most. The bass was really good!
Run of the mill early 2000s indie - it is a Good album, but I don’t understand why it it’s on the list
Pretty good album! Feel like these guys have popped up before and I liked them then as well!
3,5 stars. It started off strong. I knew golden skans and like it. It got a bit too overpowering near the end. Maybe on a different day or in a different setting I would have liked it more
For some reason, the band's name sounds familiar, but I can't remember when or where I heard it. I mostly enjoyed the album. I think I'll listen to it again, though not anytime soon. 4/5
Liked the last song
Très très solide et inconnu… c’est pour cela que je me suis inscrit… hier un album caché de Cure et aujourd’hui Klaxons
Nothing much to say about this one. It feels like another album made to play in the background of a sports game. Same problem I had with Franz Ferdinand. Flashy on the surface, empty underneath, and easy to forget the moment it ends. The songs bounce around with a lot of bright energy and noisy electronics, but none of it lands with any real weight. Everything sounds busy and colourful yet strangely hollow. There is no strong identity and no moment that feels necessary. It just keeps moving without ever becoming interesting. The production is clean and loud in that mid 2000s indie way. Every sound is polished and pushed forward, which only makes the lack of substance more obvious. It is well recorded and still completely unmemorable. Myths of the Near Future is a clear miss. Another stylish but pointless record that belongs on a game menu, not on repeat.
A couple of pretty meh singles and a ‘tick off and forget’ album for me. Struggled to engage with this and not interested enough to try again. And I really don’t like their octave doubling thing used on almost every song.
Honestly their sound is more interesting and higher quality than most landfill indie of this period and Not Over Yet Is cool so while it may deserve an objective 3 this didn’t really resonate overall and I kept checking when it would be over
I fondly remember the singles from (what we are now calling) the Indie Sleaze era in London. I think they still hold up. Not that many other standouts across the album though. Decent dance punk vibes. 📢📢📢 / 5
pretty good 4/5
Great album a breath of fresh air 👌
The Klaxons - Myths of the Near Future I didn't know I liked the Klaxons. But now I know I do like the Klaxons. And not just the tracks by the Klaxons I had heard before but didn't realise were the Klaxons but also the tracks by the Klaxons. I hadn't heard before. Maybe I need MORE Klaxons in my life. Best Track - the songs I had heard but didn't know were the Klaxons were all best tracks. But the bestest new track by the Klaxons was Atlantic to Interzone...probabaly. Worst Track - Isle of Her. Not bad Klaxons though. 8/10 Klaxons
Gostei!
the whole time i was listening to this there was very loud building work going on outside which definitely fit the vibe
Dogs breakfast of shouty pretentious lyrics, watered down rave, dance poppy guitars with a whiff of postpunk, clutters of dumb noise: repetitive as hell and mind numbingly boring. WHY?
Not much taken by this early 2000s rock album. There’s just not that much distinctive or interesting here—is it on the list just because it has literary references and seems intellectual?
I've never heard of this project. It seems like it made a bit of a splash in the UK and not much in the United States. It's a decent enough record and I suspect that this band was fun to see live. You can definitely hear the electronic dance sounds mixing with a mainstream anthemic post-punk/indie sound. I definitely didn't regret hearing this, but I probably won't listen again. It's decent, but there is more interesting stuff working within these conventions.
Probably would have loved this if I heard it when it came out in 2007.
I started not liking it but it grew on me.
Cool album, it was entertaining
nothing exciting to be honest. just mediocre to be honest
echt prima enjoyable, laatste nummer is echt onnodig lang
An unexpectantly fun album.
Better than Coldplay
A couple songs in and I can tell this will be a slog. Mid 2000s dance pop with some indie elements thrown in. Not exactly my style. I enjoyed some of the bass tones on this record but can't really say that anything else stuck out to me. It's Brit dance pop, and mediocre at that. 2/5
decent indie rock, for late 2000s this is pretty good. but i don't really see myself coming back to listen to this again.
Two receivers - 3 Atlantis to interzone - 3 Golden skans - 3 Totem on the timeline - 3 As above so below - 3 Isle of her - 3 Gravity's rainbow - 3 Forgotten works - 3 Magick - 3 It's not over yet - 3 Four horsemen of 2012 - 3
Not bad, but just kinda mid.
The British Bias on this project is insane. There is no way this album makes it otherwise. It just sounds like all those other forgettable bands of the mid naughts that played for a couple of days on college radio and they we never thought about again.
Catchy sounds. It had me dancing a little bit but nothing really stood out.
sounds exactly like you would expect a mid-late 2000s uk indie album to sound, for better or for worse pretty fun listen overall, even though the falsetto octave harmonies sounded pretty goofy and i sometimes couldn't shake the feeling i was going to be sold car insurance at any moment favourite songs: two receivers, as above so below, isle of her least favourite song: golden skans
How have I never heard of this band. I think I may have to give this a few more listens.
Would I listen to this again? Yes If someone were playing this in my presence I would be intrigued.
Very interesting listening experience. Didn’t expect it to sound so indie. Nevertheless there’s lot going on here and it’s so much more than basic indie music. The instruments sound awesome and everything about them is great in general. I will probably come back to this album because I’ve discovered that I quite like the sound of indie. Gonna be honest I’ve been quite stoned listening to this and pretty much the only track that caught my attention was Forgotten Works, so that’ll be my pick for the best song. It’s very groovy and cool and I really like it.
not my cup of tea but also not terrible
New Rave???? No thanks - not for me. Sounds like completely engineered music. Miraculously I listened to the whole album on a run. I kept thinking if I run faster it will end! Let’s move on.
I’m more mad at the list than the artist on this one. I did not enjoy the album, and I kept thinking “why is this here instead of Two Door Cinema Club?” Similar new rave / alt dance genres, similar time periods, and very similar sounds. But TDCC, especially Tourist History, is much more pleasant to listen to, had greater commercial success, and has a longer lasting influence. I appreciate this list, but I fear the creators do not understand 21st century music. First is not always best, and popularity isn’t a negative.
My main issue with this album is that other groups did this better around the same time? I enjoyed it because I enjoy this era and genre of music but the album ended and every song that came up on shuffle I liked more than any song on this album.
Hated this. The worst of Indie rock. No imagination...
Loved this album growing up, want to give it a 5 but just shy. Pity they petered out after this, nothing of a similar genre since
Shit was peak on da bus
Oh well. At this point during the 1001 project it feels there's more music I dislike than I like. The Klaxons didn't do it for me.
I remember reading Naked Lunch in college. A week after I finished the book, I heard Atlantis to Interzone for the first time, felt like fate, and bought the CD shortly after.
00s alt-rock / indie rock. It's high energy and fun, but didn't really click with me. It's not really catchy or emotional and although I did enjoy listening to it I don't really have any desire to put in on again. Atlantis to Interzone reminded me of good memories spamming the "DJ" button and all the other random samples on the keyboards in music class in high school.
Not a lot to say about this. Nice 2000s vibe.
Not bad by need-something-from-the-2000s standards. I appreciate that they're trying not to be completely derivative and do something new (even if they don't quite get there). However, their songs repeatedly make a sound that is exactly like the timer on my stove beeping. Confusing.
Golden Skans is a bop. Good album.
Little peculiar, but it was good
I listen to most of these albums this morning and if they are worth my time I’ll come back later. The first interesting song was the Bloc Party song that came on after the album was over. Most of these songs sounded the same. When they make up genres like dance punk I know it’s going to be shit. They aren’t good. The music isn’t good the songs aren’t good. I remember seeing the name a few years ago thinking I should check them out. I’m glad I never did. I don’t think I needed to hear this before I died.
Great album at the time. Some really good songs. 3.5
Boring but energetic
Generic, noisy, boring, and devoid of personality. This isn't the worst thing ever, but it is not good. For a while it was salvaged by me thinking it came out like 5 years earlier. Like, alright, this is kind of weirdly ahead of its time. But nope. Just stinky. Reading about the subject material, maybe there's some interesting/intelligent stuff going on here, but I don't feel like sifting through it. Terrible album cover. Terrible band name. Fave track: - Golden Skans
Passable British rock. Doesn't set anything on fire but I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.
This was the perfect vibe for today so I'm gonna round up to a 4. Been in the mood for some 2000s hipster bullshit recently and this hit the spot. Favorite track: Golden Skans 3.5/5
Ma che roba è? Bellissimo
kinda cool
This album is great, very cool and love the frenetic energy and British Invasion alternative sound.
Claims to be "New Rave." To me kind of a cross between metal and dance music with melodic singing. Doesn't do too much for me. Another once and done.
An assault on my ears. Awful. Did not need to hear this one. Can I "no stars" and move on?
Solid album. I had fun listening to it. I like the noisy guitars and bass forward instrumentals. I think other bands were doing this dance punk style a little better though. Favorites were Golden Skans, Totem On The Timeline, and Gravity’s Rainbow.
Really energetic. The synths with the rough guitars are a fun mix.
Another generic, middling British album that does not deserve a to be on a list of the 1001 albums you must hear before you die. I didn’t enjoy it even tho the press on it - placing them in the same dance-pop realm as a better group like Bloc Party - suggested it might be my kind of thing. Nope. It’s not awful but it’s not special or distinctive enough for inclusion here.
3 sterne
this is an era of music that i mostly skipped and feel like i don't have an ear for. it was fun and sounded great in my car and i can't argue with a sub-40 minute album
Fine but immediately forgettable and at over a thousand albums in I'm not giving that three stars anymore
Let’s keep it moving
Nothing special and not on the level of anything anyone would say you must hear before you die.
This was just ok for me, not bad but I don’t think I would return to it
This one was interesting. Lots of energy and great flow.
Boring brit rock. This time from the 21st century.
Not for me
The rhythm section gets me the most here. Listened to it on a hike which likely helped it out. Felt alright, kind of interesting. Only one listen. Grew on me a lot at the end. Four Horseman of 2012 is a cool song to close the album
It's fine, but feels a little repetitive. Good enough song construction. Just doesn't stand out from the crowd.
It’s a no from me dawg.
*2007. Brit alt. *For some reason this hit for me. Sounded kinda like The Wombats. *Very solidly 2007 indie, which I’m always here for. *Listened a couple times through and never wanted to skip forward. Catchy songs overall. *There are probably a lot of British bands like this, but they're not on my radar. RATING - 7/10
A couple of eyebrow raising moments scattered throughout, but otherwise this feels like a textbook example of “landfill indie”. Fun and energetic but ultimately rather unremarkable - for me at least.
Geðveik plata. Eitt besta lag tónlistarsögunnar er líka þarna.

Another forgettable album!
Eh, it sounds like all the other bands the UK in this time period. Not for me.
I didn't think I was going to like this one from the start so it had to start uphill.... ended up about where I thought it might just ok
It has a good beat and you can dance to it. I favor the punk flavored offerings more than the pop flavored ones. It was a fun listen, but nothing I feel compelled to listen to a second time.
This was a total dark horse for me, but being drawn to sci-fi postmodernist literature at the time this one came out, *Myths Of The Near Future* was bound to tick a lot of boxes for me. With a track named "Gravity's Rainbow", how could I *not* spot that debut album? It's a great and lively track by the way, whose lyrics are only vaguely indebted to Thomas Pynchon's magnum opus, thematically speaking. A very surprising 3⭐️
Worth multiple listens, maybe buying
Meh
Meh. The at-first interesting choral sound gets old after a few tracks. A 2.
3.5/5
I really ended up enjoying this. I will check out more of them for sure.
If this music was on at a party, I would leave.
Underneath the space and future talk, they’re still just a British rock band.
It’s was ok then, it’s ok today. 2,7
Golden Skans casts a huge shadow over this album as the only track i remember before listening (by the Klaxons full stop). The first track us ok, but ‘Atlantis to interZone’ is a difficult listen, especially given it leads to the aforementioned’Golden Skans’ which i dont think you can really fault. I enjoyed the energy of ‘Totem on the Timeline’ which has that mid 2000s guitar sound to it, which makes me think of Maccabees, who i think more worthy of a place on this list. ‘Magick’ is frankly irritating. I’d forgotten ‘It’s not over yet’ which gives ‘Golden Skans’ a run for it’s money in the infectious stakes. The least said about ‘For Horsemen’ the better
The sound of Klaxons is the sound of me being 16 years old again - which is to say they sound like every other guitar band of this era. Catchy, sure - especially “Golden Skans” and “It’s Not Over Yet”, which are the two songs I remember them for - but they are no more my thing now than they were when I was 16.
This feels like a pretty middling album for me, but with two standout tracks that I love - Golden Skans and It's Not Over Yet. The former has been used by the BBC for festival coverage loads of times so the ooo-wee-ooos are firmly wedged in my subconscious. The later was a big single when released and I've always liked it. The rest of the album I enjoyed, but it is far less instantly catchy for me. I wouldn't turn it off, but wouldn't rush to put it on either. It fair belts along as a record though, at a trim 36 minutes. Ultimately a perfectly acceptable: 3/5
This sorta feels like the beginning of the era in indie music where the music is weird, quirky and nerdy. Like yeah we had Franz, artic monkeys and all that stuff before, but this really feels more like the sound that would eventually become mainstream and played at festivals in the late 2000’s - 2010’s. I can hear all of those bands that were yet to come bleed through in this one. This finally feels like the rock revival era of indie was being put down for a more EDM/Dancy sound. This was a really easy listen, I’m not sure I’d say it’s the most memorable by any stretch, as a lot of it is just shit I can bump in the background, but it’s something I’ll revisit for sure. We always hear the pioneers of sub genres from the 70’s, it’s always cool to hear some of the more modern Trail Blazers.
