Myths Of The Near Future

I have really mixed feelings about this album. On one side I really enjoyed a lot of the tracks and thought that the album had mostly good ideas. My issue with this album is there were multiple songs that had moments that I personally felt like were boring. For instance, the start of "Forgotten Works" was so boring I almost took a break on this album but finally after like a minute or 2 the track picked up and ended up being solid. That happened for a couple of other tracks. I think the boring parts in general were the parts that were not dance-punk or rave-y. I liked tracks like "Golden Skans", "Totem On The Timeline" and "Magick" because they focused heavily on those two genres and did them really well. I think overall the second half of this album was a little weaker than the first half but it was not a massive fall off (the first half was like a 9 and the second was a 7.5-8). That pretty much sums up my issues with the album. Now onto the positives, some of the tracks on this album feature absolutely addicting grooves like the aforementioned "Golden Skans" and "Magick". The dance-punk tracks were punchy and featured really ear-wormy instrumentation. I generally don't think the singing was anything super outstanding when compared to others in their genre and the instrumentation in spite of being somewhat derivative, both were performed well enough that it made this album an enjoyable listen and did not take away from the album that much. Personally not my favorite album in the genre but nowhere near bad. This is definitely the type of album that you can just throw one whenever and there are a few tracks that have entered my rotation. 8-8.5/10.

Started off punchy but kinda loses its way. Some strong songs (Magick and It's not over yet) which are great pop songs but....I'm not sure what's missing from such potential. I enjoyed listening to this, on my walk to work and it fitted well but, I just felt something amiss. Lovely sweet recording and well above average quality

True to their name, lots of alarm sounds. Songs with a faster tempo remind me of Muse. Fun riffs, catchy bass lines and synthy electronic hooks. Slower songs, like Two Receivers and Isle Of Her remind me of Imagine Dragons. Bland. Slower songs can have energy, but these guys just sound so bored unless there's a fire lit under them. I'm sure if I heard this band when I was 14 I would have a lot of nostalgia for them and would routinely listen to them. Unfortunately I can't see myself revisiting this album anytime soon. The first track really got my attention. Overall not bad, but dance rock is a little old to me after a few tracks. It blurs into bumptiss noise.

I remember listening to this a bit when it was released and I went to see them a couple of times (pretty sure one was a new-rave NME tour with Hadouken and someone else...) I don't remember ever particularly liking it though, think I was just in the habit of listening to indie bands and this was the current marketed indie stuff. Listening to it now, it's not completely awful. The weakest element for me is the vocals: contrived would-be indie disco anthem type stuff and I guess it was for a while. Nothing to excite or inspire though and I think it can stay consigned to the history books. There were some good bands of this time and of the same ilk (CSS, Young Knives) but this is not great. Infinitely better than Hard-Fi, though!

The fleeting moment in time that was the 'new rave' era might not go down as the most glorious or important movement in music history, but I'm sure there are worse scenes to soundtrack one's high school/uni years. This album is fun, chaotic, carefree and surreal - much like those times themselves, eh? When I hear the intro to Atlantis to Interzone today I can almost smell that heady mix of glowstick chemicals, sweat and cheap beer. 3.5 / 4

Pero tiene puntos bajos adentrándose en el disco como Isle of her o four horsemen of 2012. En ocasiones las canciones no se entrelazan en grandes rasgos, siendo que conviven un pop con un punk. Buena sucesión de canciones estilo pop-rock. Muy desconocidos, pero sorpresivamente un buen disco con canciones bien elaboradas y con un cantante que no destaca especialmente, pero que cumple con creces

Generic, consumer friendly, brit-pop rock or whatever. The sounds dont make me want to finish it, so thats a +1 star. It does sound like the most regurgitated album I have heard on this list so far, and its definitely not "have to listen to!" material.

new rave is a genre i didn't know existed, but i suppose it didn't last for terribly long. my ignorance can be forgiven. klaxons' myths of the near future was full of dance music and was easy to vibe to. memorable? no. but hey, i do appreciate a theme.

Had forgotten what fun this record is. Maybe it's not for everyone, but given I'm accustomed to the scene this band came from, it's a darn good album to me. Hectic and urgent from start to finish, a little dark and quite unique - I'm glad this one is on the list.

Nothing to really draw me in, a lot of it feels abrasive in a way they didn’t intend. Idk, it’s another forgettable one for me.

I came into this one kind of excited because I really liked this album in my early high school days (Gravity’s Rainbow was a staple of my “look how cool I am” playlists) but hadn’t revisited the album as a whole since around that time. Coming back to it now…it’s not a bad album by any means but it is certainly derivative and disappointing. The highlights are absolutely the driving drum beats and distorted, aggressive basslines. These undercurrents of the rhythm section give it a very fun dancepunk vibe through the record. This element of the sound was certainly unique to me back in the day, but now with the benefit of hindsight and broadening my tastes a bit, I see that it’s a pretty shameless rip of one their predecessors; NYC’s own The Rapture. This electro-adjacent dancey sound gets combined with some garage-rock/punk elements which were clearly lifted from Bloc Party and the Arctic Monkeys, absolutely all the rage at that point in England. Anything truly unique that can’t be chalked up to those influences seem to fall in line with the sound that would very quickly develop into the generic radio-Indie sound that was just around the corner at this point in time. So, why a 3 star rating? Because ultimately if you combine a bunch of stuff I like…I still kind of like it. It’s not the earth-shattering game-changing sound I remember from my youth, but it’s still a fun listen. A few stinkers mixed in but overall solid songs. I’ll end this review by urging anyone who was interested in the more dance-punk elements to check out both the albums Pieces Of The People We Love and (in particular for this album specifically) Echoes by The Rapture. It’s crazy to me and a clear example of the UK bias on this list that this Klaxons album could be included without acknowledging what I feel was a pretty influential run by an American band which paved the way and provided a template for this sound. The early 2000s moved very quickly and I think it’s important to remember how the timeline actually played out.

Better than a lot in the genre, but it’s still just a compilation of wannabe madden songs

Ehh it definitely got worse as it went on. It kind of went by slowly which is odd considering it was ~half hour. I think it just wanted amazing especially towards the end.

Totally unfamiliar with these guys so let's go... ... eh. jeez I don't know - not connecting early - REALLY not connecting - and especially after/during the 2nd song. Worrisome thought: do I just not like rock music anymore? Or "modern" rock (although this album is now almost 20 years old so what the hell am I even talking about). I don't think that's it <convincing myself of this by writing that, yup> - more that it falls under the Arcade Fire but faux-disco-aggression of Arctic Monkeys annoying group singing and uber-dense production (let the goddamn music breathe already ... guh) - part of that small subgenre of so-called "alt" (meaningless term) rock that I range from not connecting with to outright disliking. And to yet again fall back on my tried and true tiebreaker, these vocals are annoying AF. I honestly think I might actively dislike this one and confident enough in that appraisal that I'm sure another pass won't improve this lot. Also sonically it *sounds* fng AWFUL. Hard pass. 3/10 2 stars.

I listened to this, forgot to review it, then listened to it 2 days later and didn’t realize I had already listened to it until song. Fughettable!

Another one that I thought were a 'modern' band but turn out to be heading in for 20 years old 🙈 never knew that song I recognised was called Golden Skans. What is a Golden Skan? Other than that just 2000s indie.

These guys seem to want to rock edgily and be serious (even Pynchonesque, it might be surmised) but come off as mostly neither. For all its seeming urgency and relatively high degree of only-slightly-and-not-terribly-overdone kineticism, the end result is pretty meh and tame, besides being too alt-y for one's tastes. One must admit that this is slightly better (or not quite as terrible) than much of the dreaded '90s ALT tidal wave, probably because ravier and maybe because they at least know who Pynchon and Ballard are. In one of history's unsurprising ironies, though, they all do sound rather normie now, dont' they, all those ALT acts of the '90s and their dance-rock descendants of the '00s. Also, this mercifully shorter than some of those magna opuses. Still, not-being-too-tedious and for being lame for slightly less long feels like less than faint praise, just about what this deserves.

Pretty cool sounding album

Some of it I loved.

There's a couple songs I've known from this album for a while but never checked out the whole thing. What a mistake that was. This album is so much fun, it's over in a flash and pretty much every song bombards you with catchy hooks or riffs. Listened to it 3 times during the day and I intend to listen to it some more. Perfectly represent a certain time for indie rock in the UK in the 2000s along with the first Arctic Monkeys record where rock music was fun and exciting.

Maybe this album got me at the right time, because I was fully DIGGING this. Reminds me of a lot of the UK indie rock I loved (and still love) to this day.

Decent enough, repetitious British dance rock. Heavy baselines, spluttered lyrics. A couple of songs are strong, the rest is not memorable. Sounds a lot like they borrowed heavily from Bloc Party and Arctic Monkeys. Not sure this was important enough to go on the list.

Some decent 2000s indie-pop. I was a little concerned when I saw the spotify bio say they called themselves nu-rave but it wasn't as bad as that.

Good shit, man. Klaxons is one I certainly knew of but not particularly well. I remember Golden Skans and It's Not Over Yet being radio staples in 2007-2010; they were definitely a British indie staple amongst the likes of Arctic Monkeys, The Wombats, etc. Either way, this is an album that still slaps today. It has that element of distortion and danceability that keeps my attention throughout. Even the big one of this album, Golden Skans, is a total bop again now, even if it got a ridiculous amount of airtime back when it was released. Also, massive nostalgia for those Yamaha PSR "DJ" samples - Surely that keyboard voice was the bane of any music teacher in the 90's and 00's. I'd not really heard Atlantis to Interzone before but it slaps. Didn't realise how hard this album could get. Additionally, is it bad that it was only fairly recently that I found out It's Not Over Yet is a cover? Favourite: Golden Skans

The combination of production quality and their attitude were making this a winner for the first few songs and this was heading towards a 4. Production capabilities improved so much by 2006 that the producers can really make an album sound good - especially on headphones. The album stopped working by the last half. It sounded too repetitive and the high pitched background vocals started to wear on me.

The first three songs really catch your attention. I especially like the way they change up the styles and production – going all clubby-with-sirens-samples-guitars-and-screams on Atlantis to Interzone followed by the infectious pop of Golden Skans, which apparently has been many times covered and used in TV commercials, not surprisingly. The lesser-known tracks that follow are maybe not as hit-worthy but are still catchy, innovative and well-produced: they get the most out of three vocalists (Isle of Her and Forgotten Works are good examples). I put a lot of weight on The Mercury Prize, especially from that era. We could do worse than listening to MP winners and runners up for the rest of our lives. The fact that this beat out “Back in Black” is saying something. The LP apparently got mixed reviews from the critics, mostly due to the fact that they weren’t rave enough to be labelled New Rave. That’s okay by me.

This wasn't bad at all, I got some TV on the radio and Yeah Yeah Yeahs vibes and sure enough the Spotify algorithm played those two bands after this was done. I definitely don't think this album was "essential" though. By having 1,001 albums I think Dimery is stretching it a bit.

Jesus Christ people, just listen to The Fall.

Well, this certainly falls much closer to my preferred style of Indie rock than many others. This really is not at all what I expected going in. Unfortunately, the other line at play is the Mendoza line between being weird for the sake of being weird and being weird to be genuinely interesting. A lot of this feels like the former to me. There are many rogue noises in the instrumentation and vocals that don't do anything for me.

This album is really cool sounding, it feels like nothing else I've ever heard. Sure, that does equate to a lot of it just coming off as harsh noise and not something I'd listen to casually all the time, but this does feel like a natural evolution of much of the music that was being made out of the UK in the 90s and early 00s. It's like some really heavy metal, but lightened up with some alternative dust and synths to make it more appealing, and it works. Could see myself liking this more on a future listen, so I'll get ahead of the curb and give this a solid score now.

The most late 2000’s shit I’ve ever heard. This sounds like what would play after a transformers movie. Or perhaps during a video of somebody building a Lego Star Wars prequel set. Maybe in a PowerPoint made by a couple high school nerds who love Halo 3 and Modern Warfare on xbox 360. I wish I’d been that kinda guy in that period of time. Damn.

Solid fayre that seemed interesting at first but seemed to stretch the theme a little too much.

I'm a sucker for anything that's obviously influenced by and holds reverence for good speculative fiction. I was worried that the music itself wouldn't match those high expectations, but it absolutely did. I'll be checking out the rest of their catalog. Best track: Magick

Naff indie

Was struggling to remember what bland and massively overplayed guitar music this lot were responsible for. The first 2 tracks don't really give me any ideas. Then Golden Skans descends like a massive cloud of blandness. There we are.. Weeoooweeoooweeooo - ahh. No ta Weird to have that phasing out/nodding off sensation during such a lively song as Gravity's Rainbow. Ah, It's Not Over Yet is the other overplayed song, that's also got an annoying refrain. Go home lads. Sadly the overplayed guitar music has only got more bland really in the last 15 years. Bring back good guitar music!

Vaguely catchy, hum-drum indie dance with the odd wobbly keyboard chucked in to make it "interesting". Was the author of 1001 Albums... a FIFA fan? This is the second time - at least - that I've encountered music from the game soundtrack.

I definitely listened to this and I definitely do not remember much about it. 2006 is right around the time I stopped listening to indie rock because too much of what I was tuned into felt uneventful and uninspired. I don’t necessarily think this album fell victim to the “write songs for iPod commercials” trap that a lot of similar sounding bands got seemingly caught up in, but it surely doesn’t bring anything particularly new to the table either. Is anyone still talking about this band in 2023? Never even heard of ‘em before today.

Good sound, I like the intensity. Kind of surprised I didn't know about this band. The "new rave" label is inaccurate in my opinion, but apparently became part of the culture of the live shows with glow sticks and such. Makes me think of Grizzly Bear, with the seriousness and rigor of the sound. I could definitely get into this band.

This album vacillated between annoying and acceptable to me.

Cet album aurait pu être un véritable baise-gueule s'il n'avait pas été gâché par ces infatigables bruits de klaxons et autres menaces échangées entre automobilistes.

Les Klaxons sont très utiles pour signaler son arrviée dans le virage d'une route sinueuse de montagne, mais ne doivent en aucun cas être utilisés en ville.

It's not terrible but this isn't required listening. A bit unfocused and frenetic for it to elevate the material. I never heard of these guys before and I don't think I need to hear them again.

Although this indie-dance sound of the 00's sounds a bit outdated now, I love it. Makes me feel nostalgic for a time when we felt that everything was going amazing. I only knew Golden Skanks before listening to the entire thing, and I was shocked to discover it is barely in the top 5 best songs of the record. 8/10 Fave track: Gravity's Rainbow

The name for the genre "new rave" would come from a promotion for the first Klaxons show, indicating an indie rock sound merging with the dance rhythms of electroclash, not unlike LCD Soundsystem. Klaxons is always on, delivering a manic energy that feels like a constant attack with little room the breath.

Underrated

Some toe tappers here but a smug front man and sixth form poetry renders Klaxons try hards. The rave infused indie doesn't quite work and the It's Not Over Yet cover is an attempt to be smart and distinctive but makes you want to hear the original, which wasn't that great in the first place.

Accompaniment of mental decay...

I mean there were a few parts that were kinda cool, but for some reason the album came off as just mediocre and boring most of the time. A bit reminiscent of King Gizzard at times Also that second track was so stupid the way it starts with those dumb old Yahama keyboard preset noises lmao

Found this one by way of a Justice live show that sampled the blaring horns from 'Atlantis,' and bumped it a good deal through undergrad. I think this album works pretty well by taking the standard Brit rock template (a big dramatic chorus, narrative building in the verses) and dressing it in abrasive, out-there textures/instrumentation. Not every crashing guitar or electronic element works and some tracks do drag a bit, but there's no denying the absolute forward momentum this LP has as it careens through 36 minutes of maximalist fun.

The literary element of this album is interesting and musically it's is fine, although the band struggles to land on a definitive focus or musical point of view. Started really strong but fell off hard and Isle of Her almost made me cut this 36-minute album off early. It's kind of like you took that early 2000s indie rock sound but then washed it until the aesthetic faded away. The lyrics are total nonsense. Yes I know the one song is named Gravity's Rainbow but you can't just name a song after a book and have the song be about the book.

Pretty good. I'd heard like one of these before. Not amazing. Amanda liked the first song but not really the rest.

I'm thoroughly enjoying the bouncy energy that album just breathes. I'm a big fan of their lyrical flirtation with the mystical and sci-fi. Musically it reminds me of a lot of bands I really like, from TV On The Radio to Arctic Monkeys and from Infidels to Franz Ferdinand. So why is this album not clicking with me? It's got all the ingredients to be an evergreen on my playlists. But 4 listens over the last 24 hours, in my living room to dance, on my headphones to listen, and again while driving, it never got further than a little headnodding and appreciating the lyrics. Can't explain it, can't put my finger on it. This album just doesn't do it for me.

I’d like to love this but I’m not quite there. A couple of great singles but non of the other album tracks really grabbed me. Of that time but just not as catchy as MGMT- interesting to read that this album came out first though.

I just wasn't that big a fan of the album. Didn't find anything too catchy and was almost too experimental for me. Sounds like Two Door Cinema Club but worse. 5/10.

The energy is contagious, the songs are hooky, and the production is top-notch. It was an immediate repeat play for me. Just great. Can't believe I'd never heard of Klaxons before. They're certainly on my radar now.

It’s kind of hard to describe this album. I guess it’s really upbeat and noisy dance/punk/pop that is a little catchy at times but always full of energy. It’s not too long which is nice however it didn’t completely hold my attention. I also don’t see how this is essential listening.

What a nice surprise that was. Some say that rock is dead, certainly it doesn't dominate, but bands like Klaxon take rock into this century with aplomb. It's noticeable that they take us on a journey from obvious rock to stuff which is a little more electronic, a bit more dance oriented. Yet I think the last few songs, which feature some killer bass work, actually rock harder while bringing on the funk.

Indie that isn’t for me

Feels like part of the British new wave of rock from the 2000s while also getting a bit more weird and wooly. Sometimes it works and hits hard. Sometimes it’s abrasive and my ears are sad.

Even though the last couple songs don’t live up to the rest of the album, the album as a whole kicks ass. It’s just one of the purest forms of 2000s alt rock short of the arctic monkeys I’ve heard in a while. The run of songs from golden skans to forgotten works is just excellent.

Entirely inessential. I love fuzz bass as much as the next man, but beyond Golden Skans, this album doesn't stand up. Very derivative.

For the most part pretty bland pop-rock. A few tracks stand out by including more new wave or eurodance elements.

Klaxons name something that is an instantly-my-bag taste. Myths opens with a sound palette that makes utter sense for '07, and leaves the weird ending open.

Sounds like an inferior version of a lot of the music that was popular at the time of this album's release.

This was fine, nothing to write home about. The post brit pop style has poduced some absolute bangers and some trash and this neither. Golden skans is quite good but the rest is just fine. If employment is not on this and this album then I would demote this. But as it stands it would be a 2.5 but no halfs allowed

It’s creative, it’s unique, it sufficiently rocks, and it has Indy vibes. I think some of the music could grow on me with a few listens or so, but it doesn’t necessarily pique my interest off the bat.

Being drawn to sci-fi postmodernist literature at the time this one came out, *Myths Of The Near Future* was bound to tick a lot of boxes for me. With a track named "Gravity's Rainbow", how could I *not* spot that debut album? It's a great and lively track by the way, whose lyrics are only vaguely indebted to Thomas Pynchon's magnum opus, thematically speaking. Yet the song would provide great opening titles if a director or a showrunner was bold enough to adapt this crazy mammoth of a novel for a TV series (or for a *dozen* theatrical films, lol). Apart from that track, many other dance-punk songs slap on this LP: "Two Receivers", "Golden Skans", "As Above So Below", "Magick", "It's Not Over Yet"... I was surprised to find out that the latter was actually a cover version of an older dance track after all these years (those liner notes on my own copy of the album are too messy, which probably explains why I couldn't read them properly). Listening to the original was a decidedly *weird* experience, ha ha. Sometimes dated and cheesy arrangements can hide great songs, I guess... Speaking of "dated arrangements", *Myths Of The Near Future* is admittedly very much of its time as well. Yet Klaxons' music was eccentric and original enough to set them apart from the other dance-rock / landfill indie bands of the late naughts. It all boils down to the melodic earworms the band keeps piling up through their elated pop vocals, along with their bizarre synth hooks, rumbling distorted basslines and drilling, noisy guitars. And there are all the literary references sprinkled throughout the album, too. Such literate eccentricity is a plus that makes this record far more relatable than other forays into that overall dance-punk genre. Too bad a lot of people are unable to feel that in the reviews here. To put it in a nutshell, *Myths Of The near Future* is one of the best releases of 2007 (a year where a lot of bland stuff was singled out by the music press, unfortunately). My overall grade for it is 4.5/5, but given how criminally low their score currently is, I'm gonna round that grade up to a perfect 5. Next, please. Another Mercury Prize winner that is kinda dull.

2.4 - Noisy, headache-inducing electro-pop vomit reminiscent of Franz Ferdinand but without a single solid hook. In fact, I'd say every hook attempt fails miserably. To name just a few: the "come with me, we'll travel to infinity" line on "Gravity's Rainbow", the "light the bridges with the lantern..." line on "Forgotten Works", and the "do what you will" line on "Magick."

pretty decent album. a bit eclectic at times, but very listenable.

Pretty up and down. Some songs tend to be pretty challenging to listen to... the rave element seems to add a wall of electronic buzz at times... not all of it is effective for me. Songs like As Above So Below and It's Not Over Yet are really strong, though there's a few too many songs I'd want to skip if i was listening to it more.

Guessing that an edition of the '1001 albums...' book was published around 2008, as this 'new rave' dance indie rock was all the rage for about 5 minutes at around that time. 15 years later, it's not difficult to see why it was a passing fad. Hadn't heard of this band or heard any of their music that I can recall. Some good tracks on this album. Don't feel compelled to come back to them -- nothing wrong with what I heard when I listened to it, just didn't grab me in a way that makes me want to listen to this again or explore their other music.

Man the 00s really were a time where music was doing too much.

It's a good album and the band probably would have been fun to see live. But is there really anything exceptional or groundbreaking about it? I've heard loads of bands doing very similar things and frankly, these guys seemed a little late the dance-punk party. I'd pick The Rapture's Echoes over this one personally. That doesn't mean it's a bad album. Not at all. I enjoyed it all the way through for what it is. I just don't know that it's interesting enough to be on this list.

Enjoyed most of this. Will definitely re-visit in the near future.

We’re fragments of fiction!!! This was really up my alley. I hadn’t heard any of this and will revisit. I love that the songs all sound different and add to the overall listening experience. I want to say that it’s “proggy” but I don’t really know what that means. The musicians are talented. Thank you.

This album is perfect for psyching myself up to go back to school and out myself back into student debt. I’ll be straight up. I loved it, and I thought it was magick. Each song brought a fascinating element to the table, and I absolutely LOVE when bands just shoot for the moon and throw everything at it. My fav on the album, Gravity’s Rainbow, makes me want to both dance for 100 hours straight while climbing Mt Everest. Oh but this review isn’t over yet. If these are the myths of the near future, I can’t wait to see what the myths of the distant future are. Now the review is over.

My first listen I was unimpressed but this one grew on me. They have kind of an unusual sound but it comes together into some pretty decent songs that sort of mix punk with a bit of Gorillaz and maybe some avant-garde or something. Competent musicianship all around and creative songwriting. A low point is definitely Isle of Her, which I find to be kind of boring and a bit too heavy on the weird factor. The other dud is Four Horsemen which I find is just a bit too intense that it loses out on the intricate sound the other tracks have. Also it doesn't have a melody since they just sort of yell the lyrics, and the song misses that. These two low points are easily outweighed by the good work on the rest of the album however. My highlight is probably the intro to Atlantis to Interzone, where that vocalization noise in your left ear and the siren in your right ear sounda chaotic but quickly resolve into the beat of the song. Really nice stuff.

Predictions: - UK (name is a giveaway tbh) - indie rock - unremarkable - goes for an hour Ok, got the length wrong (by thanks of a 15min silent secret track that's unavailable on Spotify lol) but otherwise nailed it. Nameless mid-00s indie rock from the UK. Nothing critically bad, but consistently low-level boring. Had "indie with disco beats and mellotron" vibes in some songs. Another result of Dimery's obsession with showcasing the UK at any cost. 3/5.

Maybe it's just because I listened first thing in the morning when I was still waking up, but it was just a bit much for me. I like music that has a good energy, but this was a bit over the top, kind of frantic feeling. Not bad, but I wish they would tone it down a little and add some space between the notes. 3 stars.

What a great album! This is the first time that I've heard of this band and I'm absolutely devastated it took me this long. Not only the music and vocal are great, but also the album makes references to some of my favourite books! I love the atmosphere of the record, putting some postmodernistic twist in their sound, appropriate to the books quoted on the tracks. I'm only after the first listening, so my emotions are really fresh, but for sure my next weeks will be spent trying to listen Klaxons to the ground. Great start of the week!

Atlantis To Interzone still sounds great (rave) but unfortunately stands out on a rather unremarkable album (no rave). Bought this album in 2007 or so, after hearing the Soulwax remix of Gravity's Rainbow, and felt rather disappointed when listening to the flat original.

Reminds me of Bloc Party, but at a lower level.

Hadn't heard it before and turns out that was actually a fine state of affairs. The songs are repetitious both internally within each song and all together song to song. None of the tracks evoked either emotion or motion in me. I could feel Gravity's Rainbow trying to have some energy towards the end of the song but then Forgotten Works smothered that momentum straight away. One of the longer 36 minutes I've spent on this project. Straight mediocre 2.5.

This was more interesting than I expected but that style of music has already grated on me and the vocals are terrible. There's just enough interesting hooks and composition to make it worth persevering through but I wouldn't say I liked it. Even Not Over Yet isn't as good as the original or several cover versions, though it's a fair attempt at doing something a bit different with it. Probably gets a 2 as most of my 3s are more listenable.

I'm surprised that I've never listened to this as a whole - it was when I was most into music, it's totally the sort of thing I would've been into then, and I knew all the singles (and quite liked them). Listening to it now, it's aged... okay... I guess? There are bits of it that still work, but others that feel like proper teenage pseudo-intellectualism (referencing all the stuff that you were supposed to read to seem clever but not too academic back then), and it gets a bit cringey. But, the music is still really good if you don't listen too hard! Golden Skans is the one that everyone knows, but It's Not Over Yet is probably my favourite. Was wavering between a 3 and a 4, but the fifteen minute silence mid-way through the last track tips it down into 3 territory (particularly given that neither half is any good).
