Reviews (page 3 of 6)
I really loved this sound back in the day. I also believe I've heard this one in full at least once although I don't remember when. I'm also convinced I heard them live at some point but don't remember when either. I think that summarizes the album: good, but quite forgettable.
Not bad. I was expecting worse as the second song on the album was annyoing as, but overall i enjoyed it
I have to say that the first song in the album - Two Receivers, captured me with the harmonisation (multiple-people-at-different-tonations) because they were running around the octaves up and down and it was a very pleasant experience. I have to say that I was also very pleasantly surprised by how much they were running up and down the melody and because it was multiple people harmonising, the melody was extra pleasant . Overall, very happy with this, even though it was just another album with generic 90s rock band-ish sound, but they made it a lot better. This is from 2007 but if it was made 10 years earlier, they may have been a lot bigger. I was just confused by the last song - Four Horsemen of 2012, which was music in the beginning, absolutely nothing for the majority of the song and then some sounds towards the end, very weird but I assume that there is a backstory behind it since it is almost 20 minutes long.
Production: 4.5/5 Lyricism: 2.5/5 Sound: 3.5/5 Enjoyment: 4/5 Overall: 3.6/5
Early 2000s UK alternative - this pretty much hits my sweet spot
Better than I expected. The first song was my favorite, and the last song felt like it should have been in the middle of the album.
Good English rock!
Helllll fucking yessssss
Inventive use of instruments
Couple of good songs but otherwise average
Pretty solid. They kinda reminded me of The Strokes and Cage the Elephant. Pretty good overall, and enjoyable listen. The sound was very nice and crisp. They kept it interesting from song to song and had nice variety. Lyrics were kinda weird at times but nothing that made me do a double take. Would listen to again.
I struggled with the lyrics (making them out) but it get the feeling it might be an album like Ok Computer or Twisterwhere it takes a few listens
Good new band I never heard of
Thought this was banging actually. I wouldn't actively seek it out but found it enjoyable enough!
I’m surprised I haven’t heard of this band. Reminds me of Portugal. The Man’s earlier albums. Was a good listen, would come back!
I loved this album growing up, and it still sounds fantastic today. Klaxons were a standout at the time—there weren’t many bands with this kind of sound back then, and their energy and style really set them apart. They’re also a great live act, which only adds to the appeal. The album is a fun, high-energy listen with great vocals and a bold, distinctive sound. After a string of bizarre albums this past week, this was exactly what I needed. Favourite Songs: Two Receivers and Golden Skans – both iconic and endlessly replayable. Least Favourite: None—every track holds up. Album Artwork: An amazing cover that perfectly captures the album’s vibe. A brilliant return to a sound that still feels fresh and exciting.
Feels really random to have on the list, but I really liked a lot of the stuff on here, very proggy, which has interesting connotations on an '07 album. ...I know "Deloused" is on this list, really jonesing for some Mars Volta after this one now.
I wasn't expecting much, and it delivered more than expected. Kind of some fun and interesting mix.
DJ! Was super fresh when it came out. Maybe seems a bit one dimensional now. Still gives me energy though.
The indiest pop that ever indieed. But you know what I didn't hate it, it was pretty catchy and had some fun songs even if lyrically it's complete nonsense.
Hey, a dance punk record. "Klaxon" is a good word, as this definitely rests on the noisy side a lot. For my money, I would've loved to see Innerpartysystem or Does It Offend You, Yeah? make this list more. This record is fine, though. It seems obsessed with never staying in one lane and changes itself up often, feeling more like it's trying its best to be clever than... actually being clever. Feels like a dance party at ten minutes to the end of the world, where everyone is getting in their last moves, no matter how desperate. Call it a 3.5. Favorite tracks: "Atlantis To Interzone", "Golden Skans"
I've come to dread albums popping up that I've never heard of because it almost certainly means it's a mid tier British band. Not surprisingly this is British, yet I wouldn't call them mid tier. The music is an eccentric and energetic mix of rock and electronica. I enjoyed this quite a lot, but I find myself struggling to remember any specifics after listening because there's no real hooks.
ITSNOTOVERNOTOVERNOTOVERNOTOVER YEEET
This is an interesting listening. The term "new rave" was coined by the band to refer to their sound in this album. The Guardian described the genre as "an in-yer-face, DIY disco riposte to the sensitive indie rock touted by bands like Bloc Party." I second that.
Nice
Nice album
Good album and amazing song golden skans
Nice energy!
yooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
16/1001 I actually liked this album, it has a pretty unique sound and style that I really enjoyed. BUT what the fuck happened with that last song lasting almost 20 minutes without reason? I really dont care if a song is very long but what I fucking hate is when you do pretentious bullshit just cause you wanna be "different". I think that fuck off the end album for me. Luckily "Four Horseman of 2012" has a shorter version if you wanna listening to it. Even thougth teh album has that version, the official one is the one I listen to, and just because that ending son this album is NOT a five stars. Overall, I really enjoyed listen to it. Notable songs: Atlantis To Interzone, Golden Skans and Magick
Really cool esoteric concepts, fun guitar riffs. Cant help but like this quite a bit, bonus points for not overstaying its welcome
Into it
Completely forgot Klaxons existed before this, loved it
Teils ganz hörbarer Pop Rock.
Guilty pleasure. It's sort of a mess and some of the vocals sound like the singer is being held at gunpoint by the rest of the band members, but it's a very unique sound. Reminds me of Arctic Monkeys, specifically the times back when big man Alex Turner still made music instead of whining into a mic about how his pancakes got soggy while LARPing as a 1950s crooner. Some parts of this are abrasive as hell. Like "Wonderful Rainbow" levels of abrasive. Surprising for something fairly mainstream (for the nine seconds that "new rave" was a thing).
very cool overall!! kind of arcade fire-esque
It took less than a year for the world to forget that this band ever existed, so I have no idea how they made the list. That said, it was fun.
Pretty high energy alternative rock with some interesting spacey sounds. It sometimes was a bit abrasive and repetitive, but overall not bad
L’enchainement en ouverture “Two Receivers”, “Atlantis to Interzone”, “Golden Skans”et excellent, “It’s not over yet” un peu plus loin... “Isle of her” est plus relou.
Nu Rave - combining elements of the past with elements of the future to create something not as good as either of its composite parts. Clem Fandango worships this album, whereas I give it 4/5
The first song hooked me, and then was jamming along, and then it seemed to kind of let up at the end, but all in all good listen
Was good intersting mix of sounds
Not at all "new rave", quite punky on some songs and very much an alternative British rock ("indie") album with strong dance rhythms. Good. Thoroughly enjoy Golden Skans and Not Alone.
I was sure I would hate this, but I didn't. It was actually really interesting. I dug the overall vibe - pleasantly surprised.
Great album with a unique sound. Definitely saving this one for later
Oh maaaaan. This is a right 00s indie banger. Seeing this came out 17 years ago does make me feel quite old. None the lesson I think it holds up pretty damn well, it' still a fresh sound, very recognisable, so it doesn't fall into landfill indie at all. I looked up what the Klaxons looked like in 2007 and surely they must have been sponsored by Topman, bright coloured cardigans and buttoned up polo shirts.
“New rave” is a joke that has gone too far and likely become annoying to the band. The only rave sound here is the air siren on Atlantis To Interzone. The other ravy aspect is that Paul Oakenfold co-wrote the cover It’s Not Over Yet, which doesn’t sound like rave music. The album is engaging throughout. The lowest point happens to be the last song, Four Horsemen of 2012. Thankfully it is short.
3.5 really
Interesting
This was kind of a weird album. I really liked it but it didn’t really have any songs that were like, “THATS THE HIT!” I really enjoyed it and will add to the listening pile for sure.
Some good songs on here. Very danceable.
I liked this a lot, it actually felt like something new sound-wise, integrating a lot of modern non_rock elements without their feeling pasted on.
I'm into this.
Ah the nostalgic sound of British rock bands in the 00s. There's nothing quite like it, and I simply do not care that the majority of the output from that era does sounds a bit dated - it's all just way too enjoyable. Special shout out to the monstrous bass of Jamie Reynolds.
I have really mixed feelings about this album. On one side I really enjoyed a lot of the tracks and thought that the album had mostly good ideas. My issue with this album is there were multiple songs that had moments that I personally felt like were boring. For instance, the start of "Forgotten Works" was so boring I almost took a break on this album but finally after like a minute or 2 the track picked up and ended up being solid. That happened for a couple of other tracks. I think the boring parts in general were the parts that were not dance-punk or rave-y. I liked tracks like "Golden Skans", "Totem On The Timeline" and "Magick" because they focused heavily on those two genres and did them really well. I think overall the second half of this album was a little weaker than the first half but it was not a massive fall off (the first half was like a 9 and the second was a 7.5-8). That pretty much sums up my issues with the album. Now onto the positives, some of the tracks on this album feature absolutely addicting grooves like the aforementioned "Golden Skans" and "Magick". The dance-punk tracks were punchy and featured really ear-wormy instrumentation. I generally don't think the singing was anything super outstanding when compared to others in their genre and the instrumentation in spite of being somewhat derivative, both were performed well enough that it made this album an enjoyable listen and did not take away from the album that much. Personally not my favorite album in the genre but nowhere near bad. This is definitely the type of album that you can just throw one whenever and there are a few tracks that have entered my rotation. 8-8.5/10.
Van sorgir del no res, i van contribuir a fer del 2007 un any musical força rellevant. El seu disc de debut gairebé semblava un 'grans éxits': 'Atlantis to Interzone', 'Golden Skans', 'It's Not Over Yet', 'As Above, So Below'... no hi havia segon de descans.
The fleeting moment in time that was the 'new rave' era might not go down as the most glorious or important movement in music history, but I'm sure there are worse scenes to soundtrack one's high school/uni years. This album is fun, chaotic, carefree and surreal - much like those times themselves, eh? When I hear the intro to Atlantis to Interzone today I can almost smell that heady mix of glowstick chemicals, sweat and cheap beer. 3.5 / 4
Two Receivers, Golden skans, Totem on the timeline. Hitazo: Golden skans Canción favorita: two receivers
Totally forget about them and what a huge hit Golden Skans was.
One of my favorites from a while ago, great record.
I liked this a lot. Gave it a few listens.
4.5. This is SUCH A GOOD ALBUM.
Anberlin/finger eleven esque Golden Skans and isle of her are my fav
Had forgotten what fun this record is. Maybe it's not for everyone, but given I'm accustomed to the scene this band came from, it's a darn good album to me. Hectic and urgent from start to finish, a little dark and quite unique - I'm glad this one is on the list.
Pretty cool sounding album
Futuristic sci-fi dance punk? Yeah, I'm in for this.
Great Dancy stuff, I was particularly into the drums on display
Never had time to dig into this band except singles, but they are pretty good
Fun, rock
Maybe this album got me at the right time, because I was fully DIGGING this. Reminds me of a lot of the UK indie rock I loved (and still love) to this day.
This album is really cool sounding, it feels like nothing else I've ever heard. Sure, that does equate to a lot of it just coming off as harsh noise and not something I'd listen to casually all the time, but this does feel like a natural evolution of much of the music that was being made out of the UK in the 90s and early 00s. It's like some really heavy metal, but lightened up with some alternative dust and synths to make it more appealing, and it works. Could see myself liking this more on a future listen, so I'll get ahead of the curb and give this a solid score now.
Good sound, I like the intensity. Kind of surprised I didn't know about this band. The "new rave" label is inaccurate in my opinion, but apparently became part of the culture of the live shows with glow sticks and such. Makes me think of Grizzly Bear, with the seriousness and rigor of the sound. I could definitely get into this band.
Kept
Although this indie-dance sound of the 00's sounds a bit outdated now, I love it. Makes me feel nostalgic for a time when we felt that everything was going amazing. I only knew Golden Skanks before listening to the entire thing, and I was shocked to discover it is barely in the top 5 best songs of the record. 8/10 Fave track: Gravity's Rainbow
Found this one by way of a Justice live show that sampled the blaring horns from 'Atlantis,' and bumped it a good deal through undergrad. I think this album works pretty well by taking the standard Brit rock template (a big dramatic chorus, narrative building in the verses) and dressing it in abrasive, out-there textures/instrumentation. Not every crashing guitar or electronic element works and some tracks do drag a bit, but there's no denying the absolute forward momentum this LP has as it careens through 36 minutes of maximalist fun.
Pretty good. I'd heard like one of these before. Not amazing. Amanda liked the first song but not really the rest.
I’d like to love this but I’m not quite there. A couple of great singles but non of the other album tracks really grabbed me. Of that time but just not as catchy as MGMT- interesting to read that this album came out first though.
Rock.
Energetic but kinda derivative
Really cool album. Musically fun - had me bobbin my head. Atlantis to Interzone is my fav track.
Very good
Meh- didn’t do much for me, but I didn’t hate it
Not bad. Made it through. Even checked out more of their stuff, will I come back for more?
Ihan ok britti rokkia, tulee mieleen Arctic Monkeysin menevämmät biisit tavallaan. Mut ei mitään mieltä räjäyttävää. Viimeisestä 20min biisistä olikin 15min hiljaisuutta ja sit hidden track eli pelkkää häiriöääntä. Parhaat: Two Receivers, Golden Skans
Blast from the past
Loved a lot of the instrumentals & overall soundscape of this album. The vocals were hit or miss with me; sometimes they complemented the electronic/indie backdrop, other times they felt same-y. I could see this record growing on me since its overall sound is suited to my tastes, but for now, I land at a strong three. STAND-OUT SONG: “Atlantis to Interzone” HONORABLE MENTIONS: “Golden Skans”, “Forgotten Works”, “Gravity’s Rainbow”
Made me think of Jesus Jones. Indie Rock trying to keep up with the latest tech.
Hard to put this into a genre description but its pretty cool stuff with some filler, kind of punk-y is the most I can describe it but this is very unique
Better than I anticipated, Klaxons’ Myths of the Near Future carried a sound that often felt adjacent to Franz Ferdinand or The Killers—all sharp edges, danceable rhythms, and a restless energy. It made for an enjoyable enough listen, upbeat and easy to let run in the background while I worked through the first part of my morning at the office, which probably says something about its accessibility. That said, nothing about it really grabbed me. But, to be fair, nothing about it actively disappointed me either. It exists in that strange middle ground: competent, entertaining, and ultimately forgettable. Did it deserve a spot on the 1001 Albums list? My response is a shrug of indifference—and with that, I’ll move on with my day.
Having never heard of these guys, it ended up being a rather enjoyable British rock entry for a change.
The inclusion of this (fairly catchy but mostly unremarkable) album on the 1001 albums list makes me wonder which other dance punk adjacent albums from this era made the list. If this album made it but, say, Bloc Party and Death From Above 1979 didn’t, that would make no sense. The author of this book has to be British, right?
Yeah right . Loved it when I was a kid tho
Side A is great, side B is a noticeable drop off.
Du rock un peu psychédélique vitef
Sympa mais sans plus
I have to be honest. I attempted to listen to this album at the moment I woke up, still laying in bed. I fell asleep after two songs. So I gave it another run, and it wasn't horrible.
I had moments of "wow this album is underrated" and then moments of "wow this album is overrated". 3* feels fair.
Pretty good.
Quiet the strange little album, didn't have much of an impact. I need to listen to it again.
cool
Not a bad listen. Interesting enough, but not something I am going to be looking out for in the used bin.
Never heard of Klaxons, but found this album overall enjoyable.
This was ok. Not sure why I needed to hear it before I die though.
I remember this album coming out and giving a kind of 🤷♂️ response, so it was fun to revisit. Unfortunately, my feelings on the debut from Klaxons haven't much changed. There's nothing fundamentally wrong with the songs, but it's all over the place stylistically. Worse, the core post-punk garage band sound was not unique in 2007 and I can name off half a dozen bands better at it than Klaxons. If it wasn't such a cluttered and over-produced album, I might have liked it more, but unfortunately Klaxons fell victim to the loudness wars.
While this didn't do much for me, I also can't criticise too much. There was some decent songwriting with a very heavy, 2007 sound but I don't see myself listening to this again anytime soon.
Solid album from the "new rave" sound of the late 2000s; by the end I'd had my fill, though. I did appreciate the occasional use of synths to sound like warning klaxons, though - good way to live up to the band name!
I see new album. I see British album. I see that they coined their own term for their style of music. All things that cause me to come into an album a bit apprehensive. And I think my apprehension is justified, not just from experiences with the list, but with the actual album, too. It's just kind of fine. It's interesting in that it doesn't really sound like something that's been done before, but it doesn't really seem all that good. I ended up walking away pretty unimpressed. Favorite Song(s): Totem on the Timeline
When I listened to this album just now, I'm pretty sure it was the first time anyone outside of the UK has ever attempted to listen to Klaxons, and it was fine
I mostly enjoyed this and added it to my library. It sounded to me like one of those early 2000s bands, like the Strokes, but if they were just a little more interesting. Will revisit.
I have vague memories of Klaxons receiving a good amount of hype around the time this came out, and listening now, that tracks. Myths of the Near Future sounds of its time, and that's not a knock against it. "Totem on the Timeline," "Gravity's Rainbow," and "Magick" stood out in particular for me, but it's all pretty solid. 3.5 stars.
Not as bad as I thought it was going to be, recall that there was a lot of hype when it came out back in 2007 which at the time put me off. Good to hear it again with fresh ears nearly 20 years later.
That era where a song or two were good and the rest could be easily forgotten. This fits with that era. Golden Skans 2.5
An enjoyable 2000s rock album. This is a great genre for me, and this is a good, not great, entry from it. 3.5, rounding down.
This won the Mercury Prize over Back To Black? Astounding. It's not dreadful but I didn't remember it, and I won't remember it next week.

Good
beetje wisselvallig
The actual klaxons were a highlight. This album sits very much in bucket with Muse. I get the appeal and also get why someone might despise it. My reaction is general boredom, lightly seasoned with a couple high points and vague desire to try and like it more.
Sort of felt all over the place in terms of their creative choices but the album still got its point across and wasn't a bad listen at all. 6.5/10, Favorite Song: It's Not Over Yet
I’ve had enough of the brits. This was inoffensive but surely there are better and more interesting albums from other countries….
Big nostalgia hit, loved this album growing up, the singles are still great but in a whole the album has a lot of filler, could be ten minutes shorter
I liked it more than I thought I would. 3.
ok
me gustó pero no es mj estilo
3.5
They kinda remind me of a pumped version of Foster the People, just three or four years earlier (7.6) ★★★½
Very typical of its time. It is good, but nothing more. 3.5 stars
Never heard this before, but I thought it was pretty good. They kind of reminded me of Arctic Monkeys a little bit, but not quite as good. The highlights for me were "Gravity's Rainbow" and "It's Not Over Yet". 3.5 stars.
Unremarkable.
Never heard of them. Some decent songs
Decent listen
It’s kind of giving British Strokes, which I actually dig. Sounds big and chugging and sometimes explosive. Layered production and a lot of good uses of fuzz. Sometimes it also just sounds like run-of-the-mill mid-2000s indie, but I grew up on that kind of feed, so I’m inclined to like it. Strong three; I could see myself revisiting this and liking it more.
enjoyed :D don't really remember much though.
That was fun.
its fine. bored me pretty quickly
This hits like the best of early 2000s indie pop. i enjoy it. But it doesn't hold the same nostalgia for me that would put it on top. I'm sure I'll listen to it again, but if I forget, I won't miss it.
I wasn't paying that close attention while listening to this but I thought it was pretty good and a very unique sound. I'm in a sci-fi mood lately so I appreciated those elements in the sound. One to re-listen to when I get a chance.
Seems like an unpopular opinion, but i quite liked it. Not great but some songs were
3.5 stars. Muse-esque rock elements in the dance punk/post-punk record. Started off strong but faded to less exciting pop after a bit. Standout is "Atlantis to Interzone"
Golden Skans head and shoulders above everything else here. Atlantis to Interzone is still cringe.
Didn't love it, but didn't hate it.
Luke their namesake, Klaxons can be annoying, droning, up-and-down, and repetitive. But there's also some decent tracks on this album, and there's potential I might like it this more with another, closer listen to both the music and lyrics at some point. Based on one not-so-attentive listen only: 2.5 stars
Not earth shattering or groundbreaking. It’s not even unique. Meh.
A literary sci-fi concept album name checking JG Ballad, Williams Burroughs and Thomas Pynchon should be right up my street, but unfortunately it’s a little bit of a let down. It opens promisingly enough, sounding like a 1970s prog/krautrock album but quickly turns into something more akin to Franz Ferdinand style indie. Indeed, I would have sworn that Golden Skans, the best known hit from this album, was by the aforementioned band. As far as the literary pretensions go, it seems to be mainly using words like ‘hypersonic’ and ‘infinity’, and chucking in the odd reference to Westphalia and Aleister Crowley like a nerdy contestant on University Challenge. I did kind of enjoy it but I got the impression that they were expecting it to be a much bigger hit than it was, and the band has been on hiatus since 2015.
Need more time to understand this. Kinda not my genre, but some songs are great
easily not the worst album of all time
Kinda fun, just not the vibe I'm generally looking for.
Ts was crazy. It sounded just like the album cover. I thought it had really cool production were every thing is punchy and distorted. Over all the songs weren't that consistent. I know it's a concept album but after listening to it I'm not really diving to dig deeper(I probably will at some point).I don't particularly enjoy the lead singers voice. The brum and bass on this are pretty good though. I'll give it a strong 6.
Another Dimery special. Brits loved it but less impact in US
I thought I was really gonna dislike this album based off the first song or two, but it was a lot more palatable than anticipated. Still don't see myself throwing this on again anytime soon but a tip-of-the-cap to these guys for going balls to the wall on their debut album
Nothing remarkable, won't remember this in a week. Nothing bad about it, just very bland 2.7/5
This started off really badly but got better as the album went along. Each song is a pretty simple idea that just gets repeated endlessly, which makes the 36 minutes feel more like 66. That said, some of those ideas are interesting. 2.5/5.0: Mixed
Competent but completely unremarkable.
nice mix of indie pop
Modern form of Brit pop/rock.
Was better than I was anticipating and ended up knowing at least two songs. Starts out strong but by the end I understood why this was eventually removed from the list. Completely fine but surprised it ever made it on the list originally. Recency bias perhaps?
Cool ✌️
I feel like this is something I’d warm up to with more relistens, but my initial impressions of it aren’t too positive. Lots of noise rock, which I’m usually not a fan of on first listens. I only liked a few songs, but I did find the album interesting.
I knew nothing about this one. Going through? It's high energy indie pop. absolutely fine, absolutely unsure why this is on here. 3*, but minimal impression. Isle of Her was the only thing I was curious about, so let's call that the top track
Middle of the road UK indie rock. Not much else to say.
I’ve known about them for a few years and if this album had been given to me in 2022, I probably would’ve loved it. I now have little patience for musicians (especially British men thanks to this list) with egos incongruent with their musical talent and skill.
Pre-listening: I love the album, not a fan of the band's name, but I love the album title. Timeline-wise, this is the most recent era, newer than what I've previously listened to. Looks like I would like it 1: Krill. 2: Now this woke me up, love the alarm. The "uh-uh-uh" to alarm repetition-it scratches an itch in my brain. headbanger of song 10: cool 11: intense but cool
I was happy this was not more mid-aughts indy/alt rock, it was a little different. It's more disco/dancy music to my ear. While I was not bored while listening, I'm not sure I would listen to this album again.
Tää onkin mielenkiintonen. Ihan hyvällä tavalla. En ollu ikinä kuullukaan nimeä, vähän tulee mieleen joku Arctic Monkeys mutta toisaalta myös joku tusinaemobändi. Sit yhtäkkiä Golden Skans onkin tosi tuttu biisi mistä en olis ikinä tienny esittäjää.
Of all the 2000s British bands that I've never heard of before, this is one of the few I actually enjoyed.
I didn't know this, although I recognised Golden Skans and It's Not Over Yet*. Considering British pop music was a bit all over the place around this time, with bands trying to innovate but somehow always sounding like a retro mess, I thought this wasn't bad. My favourite thing about it was the fast, punky rhythms, which gave the whole album a sustained sense of drive and excitement. (But, I hate the vocal device whereby a second vocal track sings along an octave higher - which they use a LOT. It's deeply irritating. So much better when the second track is in harmony, like on Forgotten Works. Anyway.) I don't know the right books to be impressed or otherwise by the lyrics and themes, but I don't hate a bit of intellectualism in my music. It's a decent experience, listening to it, but I'm definitely on the outside rather than at the party: I'm finding each song is fading from my memory as soon as it ends, apart from the two that I knew. Hated the last track, not a fan of either the noisy bit or the long silence. Faves: Forgotten Works (which I shall endeavour to remember, ho ho), It's Not Over Yet. *ah - it's a cover. Oh well, I enjoyed this version.
I've listened to this album many times. There are 3 songs I really adore: "Golden Skans", "Not Over Yet" and "Magick". The rest are either good or annoying. "Isle of Her" has to be the most irritating. I don't get why "Four Horsemen of 2012" has to have such a long gap before the hidden track. 3 stars for "Myths of the Near Future".
Early 2000s rock/punk resurgence, like the Strokes, but with more electronic elements. High energy and not a bad listen.
Well, well, well. We're deep into the dregs of landfill British Indie here. And yet...there is a little something about the Klaxons that made this a bit enjoyable. Not actually enjoyable, like good music would be, but enough to raise it above, I dunno, The Enemy or Pigeon Detectives or something. It's the rave influence, even if that was a little overblown. It just propels it along a little more than most of the dirges other similar bands produced.
Middling! Not so inspired, but... fine!
Liked this more than I care to admit
Not terrible but boring in places
Pleasingly odd fusion of rock, rave and disco but these disparate genres just don't gel properly in most of the tracks, failing to find much in the way of melody or rhythm after energetic openings and tailing off into repetition. The inispid vocals don't help.
This was kind of cool but also weird.
alright
Was not at all familiar with Klaxons. Good vocals and upbeat rock. Highlights: Golden Skans and It’s Not Over Yet. 3.6
I’m confused that this is here, I like this album enough but I don’t think new rave is enough of a genre for this to be considered seminal - it’s a nice indie rock concept album.
I listened, it was entertaining. There were a few standouts and I know my second year uni house would have loved this. I’m not sure it’s an absolutely essential listen, with a few tracks sounding like FWN era Arctic Monkeys offcuts.
The comparison with Franz Ferdinand and Bloc Party is not totally off. The difference is that those bands are able to write absolutely compelling songs while they experiment with futuristic sounds. This record sure has its moments, but it often feels like they are trying too hard to be enjoyable.
3 out of 5. This album was a fun mess.
Decent album, very nostalgic. I can still recall my dad blasting Golden Skans when he works out in the shed
This was alright. Numerous catchy songs, but they did all sort of run together after a little bit. I'm realizing I don't have much more to say about this. So yeah, it was alright.
One of those weird albums of the time that was around digitally before it was officially released. I listened to that pre-release material. A lot. Then the official release dropped and things had been reproduced and rearranged and it lost it's ... soul? Maybe that's a bit wanky, but you know what I mean. I have a soft spot for that Nu-Rave era ... but this version hasn't aged particularly well. It's too polished.
It was ok
This is pretty good. I’m not sure if I would listen to it again though. I’d say it’s slightly better than The Black Album
Good shi Fav song: totem on a timeline
Overall: 5/10 I found this very uninteresting despite some catchy tunes. I just didn't think the album had a lot of character and was too derivative. The moments I liked were great but this isn't something I think I'll be revisiting. Fav Song: As Above So Below
I think I wanted to like this more than I actually did. It just flew by and nothing caught my... ear. But it was good enough. Golden Skans was the most enjoyable.
3.5 Ah a self-professed “throwback to the UK rave scene of the late 80s/early 90s,” wonder why the author included this album on his list! Okay, snark aside, I actually thought this was pretty good. Tuneful, catchy, if ultimately inessential. Not sure I hear the rave sound, though. They mostly sound like other, of the time, contemporary bands: Arctic Monkeys, Silverchair, think I hear some Broken Social Scene in some songs. But again, not bad. And short!
Felt a bit like store-brand MGMT. You know how repetition can either put you in a hypnotic groove or else feel totally grating? This wasn’t torture, but I wasn’t willing to be hypnotized either.
New to me. I appreciate the attempt to be different. I hear them repeat themselves more than a bit. I like a lot of it but not always all of it. And any song that calls to mind Gravity's Rainbow better be a work of genius--oops.
I liked their singles but after a while it all seemed like boiling soup.
At first I didn't love how every song went to 11, which I knew is a weird comment coming from me, but it seemed like they were throwing every idea at every moment of every song. But I found myself liking it more and more as the album progressed. I'd return to this one to see if it grows on me.
Enjoyed a couple of tracks but didn't really grab me.
Totally 2000's alt rock, fine, but moving on
Heavy guitar driven short rock songs.
indiscernible
I liked the first half quite a bit. As for the second half, eh.
Pretty good, but nothing that special or noticeable
Decent album perhaps worth another listen. Mostly rock until the last track, which suddenly goes all electronic. 3/5
6/10 30/01/26
Teilweise zu poppig
It’s good, although relatively unspectacular. A couple of good singles and the rest is fairly forgettable.
Ok medium. Noe britisk indie.
Better than the Klaxons album I owned back in the day. (from the looks of it I had bought and sold the sophomore outing from this band) But does little to differentiate itself from scores of other "dance-punk" artists of the time. It's fun in a hedonistic way.
It was okay. Pretty fun tunes, but not sure if I would ever return to this
Pretty bussin
rise on as depraved primates
I enjoyed it! Would do 3.5 if I could
Decent in parts.
If you to know what the 2000s sounded like this would not be a bad choice to demonstrate. Not quite in the "indie landfill" bracket but there is certainly a few misses here 3.5*
Really enjoyed the overdubbing and distortion.
Some bright spots keep it from being forgettable.
Hmmmm… the Wikipedia entry says they were compared to Franz Ferdinand. I see that, but I also would call them a less artistic Everything Everything. Either way, this was decent but never quite got to being something special
Two Receivers 3.6 Atlantis to Interzone 3.7 Golden Skans 3.4 Totem on the Timeline 3.4 As Above, So Below 3.5 Isle of Her 3.3 Gravity's Rainbow 3.3 Forgotten Works 3.4 Magick 3.2 It's Not Over Yet 3 Four Horsemen of 2012 3.3 Score: 3.372727273
Indie Sleaze at its finest.
02/01/2026 Bang average at best, boring in places. The 20 minute song at the end was stupidly annoying. Spotify listeners: 660.8k
Album #18 Klaxons: Myths Of The Near Future This was the kind of album I was hoping to come across, an album I’ve never heard of, from a band I’ve never heard of, in an era that I haven’t dug too deep into. When it comes to the classics I’ve heard the vast majority, and though I am happy to hear them again as my preferred eras of music is 70s-90s; it is always a nice surprise to find something unknown. It’s not that this album blew me away and became an instant favourite, but it was a definite enjoyable listen and not an album I would have ever heard otherwise. The 2000s indie scene has been something which I have greatly enjoyed; however, I haven’t dug too deep below the surface, mainly listening to the most famous bands such as The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, Interpol, Arcade Fire, etc. This album does sound very 2000s Euro-club scene, and although I’m not much of a raver, I can certainly appreciate how they bridge dance and punk music into a fun and energetic album. Not every song was great, but none of them were terrible, and the highs were some pretty great and fun tracks. Best Tracks: Golden Skans, It’s Not Over Yet, Gravity’s Rainbow Worst Track: Four Horsemen of 2012 Score out of 10: 6.5
Somewhat “industrial” rock.
Not usually my kind of thing, not really a club kind of person, but I did enjoy this. It's not getting into the rotation, but I might go back to it sometimes.
A 12/20 B 13/20 ( sounds disorganized but also very organized at the same time ) C 14/20 (life is strange /chloe bts vibes) D 14/20 ( same vibes, sounds like a song that could be in skate°) E 10/20 F 9/20 G 10/20 H 9/20 I 11/20 J 11/20 K 11/20 Album 11,27/20
Kinda weird, no judgement
That was fine.
As much as 14 year old me loved this album, it’s just okay isn’t it
bacaninhas do lolla. 3-4
yikes. this is fine but doesn't deserve to be here.
This was a fun trip back to the 00s for me, Klaxons were slightly out on their own in the indie scene, pushing the dancier rave scene. Rock/indie bands don’t make people want to hit the dance floor anymore, and I think that’s a bad thing. There’s a great bass sound throughout this album, it’s gritty and messy - it’s indie sleaze. The hits are big, the rest is a bit filler. 3.3/5.0 Best Song: Atlantis To Interzone
"Golden Skans" still sounds like this whole era of music distilled down to three glorious. I probably downloaded it from one of the burgeoning mid-00s music blogs that Spotify eventually killed off. There are a handful of songs that put me right back in that headspace. It's like a time machine. Does that mean it's aging well or not aging well? It's good fun, but a little style over substance, and not very differentiated from three dozen other bands from that time. I was glad to bump into it again and toss a few songs onto a catch-all playlist, but this is probably the last time in my life I'll listen to a Klaxons album in full.
Another kinda generic 2000s alternative album, but with St. Anger style drums.
Y’a un truc en vrai
Phil dit qu'il fallait être là. J'étais pas là.
Gravity's Rainbow.
Hyper and somewhat disjointed
Tons of energy on this one. Put this on and attack any task, it cooks. Super fun album
This sounds very 2007. Couple of indie bops but mainly just ok
Franz Ferdinand much? Like not love. Good not great. 3.3
Not bad, but not anything I would listen to again.
Way better than I was expecting. Really well made and actually fairly original.
6/10
3.5
Pretty good.
pretty nice
Really enjoyed the first few songs, rest blurred together a bit. Standout songs: Atlantis to Interzone Golden Skans Magick
A bit frantic, crisp rolling drum lines. There's some screaming here in the mix of some (most?) songs. Definitely of it's time. Good not great. Favorite - "It's Not Over Yet"
This album is ok
I must admit, the album did grow on me the further through it I went. Sort of had a Franz Ferdinand vibe.
British Alt Rock that I didn't think I've heard of before but enjoyed. Fast and energetic. Not so interested I want to deep dive, but would be interested to see them live. I can only imagine how fun that could be
Decent album.
Some songs I didn't like at all, but others were ok. Giving it a generous 3.
A bit too rowdy for me
Meh, generic 00's indie music. Not bad but not something I'll feel like revisiting.
generic electronic tinged pop. I honestly have no idea why crap like this is on the 1001 albums you must hear before you die. I could have died happy NOT having heard this. It's warmed-over mediocre britpop.
One of the more enjoyable instances on this list of Music You Had To Be There For.
I was initially excited by this album after the first song, but soon the tracks became a bit messy and same-y. I like the experimental aspects and might listen to it again later to see if I feel the same, but for now I think its good but could have been executed a bit better. I heard the Soulwax Remix of Gravity's Rainbow before this which i much prefer to the original on this album. 3/5 After relistens I continue to think this is a 3.
fine? nothing remarkable, but not a bad listen
Yeah, Klaxons are fine. I don’t really have any problems with this album, and it was fun to come back to it after almost 20 years. But I don’t think this short-lived project is especially memorable.
Ah, 2007. Ballard.
Why is stuff from the era you were in high school always the most cringey to you. There's nothing offensive about this album but it already sounds so dated and it's hard to imagine it would make a list like this even just 20 years later. I feel like there's better more lasting examples of this early 2000s dance punk revival stuff, but all in all a pretty easy listen. Doubt I'll be returning though.
The early aughts had some cool rock music. But this list is saturated with a lot of mid-tier examples. This included. The intersection between rock, experimental and almost club songs. There were a few that found the pocket but most of them were just average and blended into the background noise of the day.
I'm sure it's fine for what it is, but to me it is very by-the-numbers "psych indie pop." Not particularly inspired, rather it sounds like the songs are written how they are supposed to sound for the genre.
Solid but unexciting 00s rock
Really cool music.. mostly heard it as background score..
Some interesting post-punk/alt-rock/indie punk/blah blah going on here. I love the energy of much of this album, but overall it mostly just kind of washed over me without really grabbing my attention. I think it's something I'm likely to revisit but probably not a ton. 3/5
Good.bamd in their day. The nest songs on this album have been milked dry by every.medium available adverts and all. Heard nothing new or revolutionary here
Not bad
Aggressively threw me back to 2009!
Interesting
It was alright, I was lukewarm about most of the tracks. I think I got my hopes up too high reading the influences on Wikipedia. Rating: 3.3
Hér eru mjög skemmtileg lög eða brot úr lögum, en sumt er bara of mikil læti fyrir minn smekk. Við setjum þrist á þetta og höldum áfram.
I like almost everything about this, but I absolutely hate the vocals.
It is what it is
How can you have this forgotten post-punk revival album on the list but zero Interpol? That's not even to say this was bad, but more so to ask who is choosing these albums? 2007 seems late for this sound so you can't even argue it was maybe one of the first to do it. Vocals were really annoying at times too.
A step up from landfill indie, at its best wants to be Brianstorm but isn't.
Not bad. Lively, didn't annoy.
I kind of enjoyed it, but I'm not sure how it earned a place in this list. Rather forgettable turn of the century indie rock. Just fine.
