Reviews (page 2 of 6)

A very, very interesting album. I love the exploration of postmodern literature in musical form — but very listenable! Absolutely deserved its Mercury Prize win. A great example of British indie from the aughts.

A really great upbeat trippin’ good time

just a good indie album

a collage of every garish, beautiful melody someone could think of, glued together and put on the road. for my money, the closest possible thing a new rave record has come to the deranged eclecticism of Fantasy Black Channel. when i first heard it, i thought i wouldn't be thinking about the songs past first exposure. upon revisiting, it becomes apparent that every single song was just waiting to be rediscovered, each bassline or siren a loud, brash sound dispelling the ideas of it being any sort of relic. barring "isle of her" (which, like. cmon) i don't even think i could tell you what track is my favorite. it's gonna become (or has become, if you consider Brat Summer to have been an extension of bloghouse chic) cool to like this type of music again very soon. im more prepared than all of you.

The best thing about making love whilst listening to this is that you can both climax and shit your lungs out at the same time without missing a single beat. A monstrous fuck truck of a record that just really rams a cock to the back of your throat and yells "tickle my balls, Timmy!".

I always thought I liked this album but it turns out I LOVE it. Like if David Bowie had been reborn as a 20-something when he died. No idea how they even started with the arrangement or production on this, it’s SO tight.

How have I not found this before?? Pure chaos and I love it

Really digging this! Stand outs: Two Receivers, Golden Skans - seriously all solid songs.

Really enjoyed this one. Great riffs, interesting lyrics. 5/5!

Love it

For some reason, I completely forgot about this album! I listened to it on repeat when it first came out and it perfectly encapsulates the style and vibe of that period.

Das ging rein in meine Ohren. Ich kannte die Gruppe und das Album bisher nicht. Wie konnte das geschehen? Tolles Album.

This album was great. I listened to it twice and was vibing the whole time. It’s energetic, interesting and such a cool sound.

So cool, I loved this sound! Amazing to hear something so distinctive and enjoyable after nearly a thousand daily albums.

Wow this was a catchy load of fun! Really terrific!

Great discovery!

Wow I really enjoyed this one, plus the album art is so cool

Coined as a "science-fiction concept album about the future" and I'm here for it. I had a feeling that I'd heard these guys before and as soon as Golden Skans kicked in it all came rushing back. So first run through was getting familiar with the concept again and second listen was enjoying the energy. Faves: Golden Skans, Isle Of Her, Gravity's Rainbow, Forgotten Works, and It's Not Over Yet.

Damn, I must have had these folks mixed up with someone else in my head, (The Zutons maybe? 🥴) because this was not what I was expecting! Pretty crazy I haven't listened to them before, as they seem to be extremely my thing - just looking at the song titles there's references to alchemy, Pynchon and Burroughs! "Magick" is clearly referencing Crowley from the lyrics, too. Went back for a third listen as soon as I finished the second. Cracking stuff! Fave tracks - "Atlantis to Interzone" love a good AWOOOGA to kick off a tune. "Gravity's Rainbow". though perhaps I'm influenced by my love of the book. Their cover of "It's not Over Yet" is fun too.

Интересно, как раз моё.

меня очень впечатлил этот альбом. прям вау!

конец разъеб слушал всей семьей алкоальбом: pornstar

idk what I expected but that wayy exceeded it that was such a fun album, definitely revisiting

Big fan of brit rock and this album did not disappoint.

Ook de nummers die geen singles waren hebben me kunnen bekoren. Heel toffe plaat

This was a great surprise! Hadn’t heard of them before so I was very happy about the quality of this album

Loved this. Perfect album to listen to on a road trip to Mars. Favourite song - Golden Skans (obviously)

Brilliant debut from the short lived Klaxons

It’s been at least 10 years since I’ve heard this one properly. I still occasionally hear Golden Skans on the radio, but Klaxxons I think are a largely forgotten band (seems they’ve been inactive since 2014). Before today, I don’t know if I would have thought to put this on a list of my top albums of the 2000s. Now I’m pretty sure I would have in the top 3 maybe.

Gloriously barmy. I love every second of this nutty LP.

There's a couple songs I've known from this album for a while but never checked out the whole thing. What a mistake that was. This album is so much fun, it's over in a flash and pretty much every song bombards you with catchy hooks or riffs. Listened to it 3 times during the day and I intend to listen to it some more. Perfectly represent a certain time for indie rock in the UK in the 2000s along with the first Arctic Monkeys record where rock music was fun and exciting.

How could I have never heard of this band before. Because damn I've missed out. This album is a pure gem, I'm definitely going to listen to this album on a regular base. Love the sound of it. So far no specific favourites, because all of them sound great

Love the energy, very Arctic Monkeys-esque

Good shit, man. Klaxons is one I certainly knew of but not particularly well. I remember Golden Skans and It's Not Over Yet being radio staples in 2007-2010; they were definitely a British indie staple amongst the likes of Arctic Monkeys, The Wombats, etc. Either way, this is an album that still slaps today. It has that element of distortion and danceability that keeps my attention throughout. Even the big one of this album, Golden Skans, is a total bop again now, even if it got a ridiculous amount of airtime back when it was released. Also, massive nostalgia for those Yamaha PSR "DJ" samples - Surely that keyboard voice was the bane of any music teacher in the 90's and 00's. I'd not really heard Atlantis to Interzone before but it slaps. Didn't realise how hard this album could get. Additionally, is it bad that it was only fairly recently that I found out It's Not Over Yet is a cover? Favourite: Golden Skans

The first three songs really catch your attention. I especially like the way they change up the styles and production – going all clubby-with-sirens-samples-guitars-and-screams on Atlantis to Interzone followed by the infectious pop of Golden Skans, which apparently has been many times covered and used in TV commercials, not surprisingly. The lesser-known tracks that follow are maybe not as hit-worthy but are still catchy, innovative and well-produced: they get the most out of three vocalists (Isle of Her and Forgotten Works are good examples). I put a lot of weight on The Mercury Prize, especially from that era. We could do worse than listening to MP winners and runners up for the rest of our lives. The fact that this beat out “Back in Black” is saying something. The LP apparently got mixed reviews from the critics, mostly due to the fact that they weren’t rave enough to be labelled New Rave. That’s okay by me.

I'm a sucker for anything that's obviously influenced by and holds reverence for good speculative fiction. I was worried that the music itself wouldn't match those high expectations, but it absolutely did. I'll be checking out the rest of their catalog. Best track: Magick

Sunny weather driving music. Not too hot on the late 2000’s indie explosion but this one is an exception.

Non-stop energy! Super cool listen. Screw it… 5 stars.

One of my favourite albums, favourite songs are 'Two Receivers,' 'Atlantis to Interzone,' 'Golden Skans,' 'As Above So Below,' 'It's Not Over Yet' and 'Magick'

Accompaniment of mental decay...

This. This is what I came here for. To discover new, great music. "Myths of the Near Future" comes out swinging and never lets up. The energy is contagious, the songs are hooky, and the production is top-notch. It was an immediate repeat play for me. Just great. Can't believe I'd never heard of Klaxons before. They're certainly on my radar now.

What a nice surprise that was. Some say that rock is dead, certainly it doesn't dominate, but bands like Klaxon take rock into this century with aplomb. It's noticeable that they take us on a journey from obvious rock to stuff which is a little more electronic, a bit more dance oriented. Yet I think the last few songs, which feature some killer bass work, actually rock harder while bringing on the funk.

Even though the last couple songs don’t live up to the rest of the album, the album as a whole kicks ass. It’s just one of the purest forms of 2000s alt rock short of the arctic monkeys I’ve heard in a while. The run of songs from golden skans to forgotten works is just excellent.

Niceee

Nice chirpy album that steps along nicely. Interesting songs and enough difference to keep it interesting. Definitely one for repeat listens and a need to explore the artist.

Never heard of it. Very good

some nostalgic songs (PES), 3.5 rounding up #relisten

Once again I was pleasantly surprised. Good album!

Trop bien ! J’écoutais les 2 bangers à l’époque mais sans avoir écouté l’album entier : Je suis surprise de les voir dans le classement C’est vraiment lié à une époque (proche des années 2010), mais c’est cool !

Liked it. As with many of these, I likely won't revisit it, but it was good. 3 1/2 stars

Sleeper hit. We, as a society, should keep this record in higher esteem.

welcome back to 1001 British Albums I've Never Heard Of In My Life. but good this time!!!!!!!!! the band that coined the term "new rave" offers a pretty idiosyncratic version of all the styles and scenes its mashing up. ridiculously confident for a debut, toeing right up to the line of being obnoxious about it...i am ultimately here more for the dance side than the rock side. but strange and exciting grooves and riffs abound, and the production presents it all with admirable clarity, like a slice of multilayered cake. for all its wild energy it is weirdly more of an album to soak on than anything else.

For every shitty Elvis Costello or Morrisey album, there's a nice surprise like this. Love this stuff.

I was really afraid of it being mid-2000s British indie slop but I really liked it in the end.

I liked this! Would definitely come back to it.

Really enjoyed the energy of this one!! Lots of instant bangers and a lot of the ones that weren't would be growers I reckon

This was good. Four stars.

This has a distinct late-2000s aesthetic but still holds up pretty well almost 2 decades later. The writing is absolute nonsense but I really enjoyed turning my brain off and just vibing to the instrumentals.

Liked this a lot

Very enjoyable amd good energy

This was weird at times but REALLY good! I think every song fit together, this album felt cohesive and just a great time. The vocals and instrumentals are strong and so fun! Liked Songs: "Two Receivers" , "Golden Skans" , "Totem On The Timeline" , "As Above So Below" , "Gravity's Rainbow" , "Forgotten Works" , "It's Not Over Yet"

You know, wasn't looking forward to an album by a band named Klaxons (terrible band name). But ended up enjoying it quite a bit. Kinda post-punk (but not really, maybe in that 2000's indie/garage rock way, but still not really) by way of noise rock, which I haven't really heard before. Second half of the record was especially good. Album's got a great vibe. Definitely gonna be going back to this.

Pretty pretty cool

Based on the name I figured this would be some lame, experimental medieval times bullshit. Even when the drums start on the first track I was really doubting continuing on. I’ll admit, I was wrong on both accounts and that makes me happy. So far…… I would say these guys are in the same realm as Of Monsters and Men and the Naked and Famous. Maybe a little more aggressive. This is by no means a Radiohead album in dominance but it serves a person well

It's was surprising how many songs I could recognise, but have never actively listened to before. Will listen more, for sure.

Damn, I tried to tell myself that this album is not so emotionally loaded for me but hell, it is. And so goddamn good piece of music from that moment in time. So good to be back (i've never left).

Энергичный и тревожный звук. И в духе периода.

Pretty cool

Just listened to this. Let’s see how I feel on a second listen… Wow this really slips right in. I feel like Klaxon and I are old friends. 4. Sorry they aren’t making music anymore. Boolean rating: yes! This album right here is worth listening to and an example of why this exercise is worthwhile.

I lowkey dig this album and what they bring. I would never have considered this to be part of this list.

Don’t know this…. This was totally my bag! Loved it. Completely missed it in the 2000’s on this side of the pond. Listened twice and enjoyed it more on the second listen. 4 stars. Boolean rating: yes! Absolutely glad I heard it before I die.

Engaging, melodic, and upbeat alt rock that is easily relistenable due to its perfect length.

Atlantis to Interzone Golden Skans Totem On The Timeline Gravity’s Rainbow Magick

Atlantis to Interzone Golden Skans As Above So Below Magick

I actually already had one of their songs saved as one I liked but didn’t know it until I got to that point of the album, haha. Really interesting and electric album.

I love the energy

More on here than we anticipated to recognise - and lots of songs we really enjoyed. It was good.

Et bien ma foi pourquoi pas

I actually really liked this album, I went through the reviews before I had listened and saw electronic and techno and thought immediately I wasn’t gonna like it b it surprisingly I loved it this is definitely a high 4

Nice. I like those 2000s indie bands. They sound a bit like Cage The Elefant.

I seriously love their vocals, and instrumentals too, they feel so calming and relating to me, as if my exact preferences in music were in one album.

Amazing

No. 148 Enjoyed most of this. Will definitely re-visit in the near future.

Bit samey, (I wondered what it would sound like if you played all tracks at once) but liked it and would listen again.

Wow this takes me back. I loved this album when it came out and I still love it. This is a great album of rock music with dance music influences. The rock is infused with the dance music in the best way - not silly dance breaks in the middle of rock songs but rather adopting dance drums and percussion, adopting the kind of refrains dance songs would have and overall possessing very dancey energy. This sort of mix (sometimes called dance punk) was pretty popular in the oughts but none did it better than The Klaxons.

I think this is one I could listen to multiple times.

Pretty good

I see an album from 2000-2015 by an artist I’ve never heard of and I press play with dread. But this was actually really interesting in a way that was also inoffensive. That said, this rating is probably over-inflated by my low expectations.

I actually already had one of their songs saved as one I liked but didn’t know it until I got to that point of the album, haha. Really interesting and electric album.

I really enjoyed this one!

klaxons fit in the center of a wide category for me: 00’s indie bands whose names all kind of look the same and I never listened to. the hold steady, wolfmother, foals, klaxons. Good shit though! I really liked this.

Pretty good, actually

1. two receivers: is fun, hopeful vibe, it felt windy, but i felt like it was building up tension and then nothing happened, i was expecting a drop or something, so it became a bit boring later on but just because thats what i expecting, overall fun windy vibe 2. atlantis to interzone: BRAIN GO BRR, there s many things happening at once, but they're perfectly separated yet they work together so well, SO FUN 3. golden skans: the lyrics are exactly the song. the lyrics would sound exactly like the music, very 2000 vibe also 4. totem on the timeline: fit for running, dynamic, energy, movement thats what this song is all about 5. as above so below: sounds like going in a trance, slowly losing your mind, accepting it, realising you like it, then u wanna fight it and u feel it luring u in, and its a constant battle between liking that u like it and hating that u like it 6. isle of her: sounds like preparing for a ritual 7. gravity's window: sounds like artic monkeys, and its sounds very smooth 8. forgotten works: its a spell 9. magick:

Gött indiesväng. Fantastiskt driv i basen. En fyra

Never heard of them! Quick read of Wikipedia, I'm not optimistic. Start listening - actually, this sounds okay. (And yes, I do recognise Golden Skans.) Hey - it's actually good! In fact: I dig it!! Well-played, toe-tapping. Not sure about the overall concept-album aspect: the 'theme' is something to think about while listening, like "program notes", but nothing of the theme came through for me from just listening or looking at lyrics. Anyway, in summary it is indeed Good - 7/10.

This album actually was a lot of fun. An indie techno band that was fast paced and interesting. It did sound like it came from a sci-fi movie, and I enjoyed it.

I enjoy this a LOT

Mega swag listening to this 😎

fast ahfange lache, loogisch isch so öppis uf de liste ABER es isch au recht cool, vill zug golden skans kenntmer oder?? upps nüt ufgschriebe, egal 2. durchlauf, vlt klickts denn stiimmt atlantis to interzone isch so goofy aber echt na cool d hihats sind HOT jaa entweder kenni golden skans odeeer s u-u-u-uuuuuhu erinneret mich anes anders lied alsoo s hetmi immerna eneer wenig gecatched aber s macht trz recht spass. knapps 4i

I like making comps...this is like if Nine Inch Nails made a happy album. I like that.

This was up my alley. Worth a re-listen later. Although rock

This is straight up electronic. 4/5

# Album Name: Myths Of The Near Future # Artist: Klaxons # Rating: 4/5 # Comments: Three absolutely banging tunes surrounded by bang average tracks. Low 4. # Top Tunes: Atlantis / Golden skans / Its not over yet # Would I listen to it again? No, tracks only

This was a fun listen ngl

Maybe slightly generous, but there is the nostalgia factor and there are quite a few bangers in here.

Didn't realise that they crammed all these known tracks onto a single album. I'm feeling generous.

Great listen and a good example of naughtiest pop, indie . An easy listen but not that remarkable

Never heard of these guys until today. Not bad at all, almost a fun listen!

Liked it and kept wanting to Relisten.

I actually liked this one a lot more than I thought I would have. It’s like the Arctic Monkeys with a little bit more electronic influence. Shamefully, the part of me who thinks I have evolved taste, was disappointed in myself for liking the much poppier songs than the grungier, electric ones.

I knew 1 or 2 of these guys songs from the ones they play on the Alt station I listen to, but none of these songs on this album I guess. I liked them.

really cool album. rather enjoyed this one.

I actually listened to this album a lot in 2007. Fits in the indie realm I was deep in. Some good catchy songs, a couple parts that could've been shortened.

Very different but I really enjoyed!

pretty good album

Save:3

i liked it

What a nice suprise to see a niche album from my teens reappraised here

Magick alone is worth a star

This is mainly just a decent dance-punk album that isn't doing anything too groundbreaking, but it does get a bonus star from me by way of the nostalgia bias, as I thought that barking out esoteric lyrics over hyperactive mish-mashes of production software samples was the most creative thing I'd ever heard when it first came out. I'm not nearly as impressed by it now, but it's still a good time for the most part. Some of the songs here teeter on the fine line between "abrasive" and "irritating" at times (Four Horsemen in particular being a track I thought tended toward the latter), but I still think these guys had a good knack for hooks, as there are plenty of catchy, danceable tracks on here. All in all, I'm glad to have been reminded that this album exists. Favourite tracks: Atlantis to Interzone, As Above So Below, Golden Skans

Rock album with clear dance music influences that makes for some unique sounds. Nothing outstanding but a decent listen nonetheless.

Very good

Ontzettend leuk album. Leukste album dat ik nog niet ken tot nu toe. Ga ik zeker vaker luisteren. 1 nummer kende ik toevallig

Like Wilco with a pulse. Or something. I like it.

What's endearing about the Klaxons is their lack of cool and their confusion. You get the sense they don't know exactly what they're aiming for, and the resulting mish-mash of crude energy and unfocused ambition leaves the listener gloriously befuddled. There's a queasy but enjoyable not-quite-rightness to songs like 'Atlantis To Interzone' and 'Gravity's Rainbow' that comes from the band using the wrong tools for the job - trying to build a non-rock music using bog-standard rock instrumentation, struggling to make their shaky indie voices soar and ache like mysterious house divas. Bonus star for the literary references. WSB for the win!

Quite liked this one to be honest Bonus fact: I heard Golden Skans on Deadly 60 when I was like 8 and it took me over 10 years to find it again (indie club at uni)

Never heard of this band before. Pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed this. Solid Brit alt-rock

I'm totally baffled that this album only made it into one (maybe two) editions of the "1001 Albums" book before the band and album was unceremoniously yanked. It may not be a perfect album, but I can think of *many* albums that remained over the years that didn't seem nearly as worthy. I can definitely see why some compared Klaxons to Franz Ferdinand, especially on tracks like the catchy "Atlantis to interzone" (and on the less catchy "Magick", with a bizarre video), but it does feel like they carved their own eclectic, often odd sound that kind of morphed across the (pleasantly succinct) length of the album; my other favorites were "As above so below", "Isle of her" and "Forgotten works", and I applaud their effort to do a cover of Grace's 1993 "Not over yet", although it feels like they could have done a much more interesting and distinctive job. The whole sort of homage to J.G. Ballard/Thomas Pynchon/Willam S. Burroughs gets a little long in the tooth at times, but it's also a bit interesting. A fun album overall, and an utter mystery why it got dropped.

Interesting album--new to me. I listened a few times--can't get my head around the mix but it's impressive.

I wasn’t sure what I’d think of this album, but I actually really enjoyed it.

This is one of those albums I really wish I had discovered back when it first came out, because I know I would’ve been all over it. They do a great job blending indie rock and punk energy with swirling neo-psychedelia. What really stands out are the hyperactive synth lines that mimic rave motifs, but still feel raw and lo-fi in a way that fits perfectly with the band’s DIY indie aesthetic.

A surprise. Surprising that this isn't an album that relys solely on its big single. The blend of indie-band delivery with club beats and klaxons (hey, that's their name!), undoubtedly paved the way for many a band, most notably Kasabian. 'Alantis to Interzone' is something of a banger with a pumping bassline and hooks picked out on one guitar string. As well as Bloc Party and other contemporaries, it seems like the Klaxons were influenced by the Arctic Monkeys ('Gravity's Rainbow' has typical Monkey's riffing; as well as perhaps paying it forward and laying down a a template for 2007's 'My Favourite Worst Nightmare'). The centrepiece remains 'Golden Skans' which is superlative dance indie, and it is right to deem this a classic. Falsetto harmonies, delicious hooks, great guitar lines, soaring chorus. Any yet the quality keeps coming from the disco-bass driven 'Forgotten Works' to the frenetic 'Magick', the great 'It's Not Over' cover', and the punky 'Four Horsemen of 2012'.

333/1089 - A bit "too indie" at times but much catchier than I expected. I thought this was gonna be the best 3 but after seeing the variety and the fact that I like it more than Trout Mask Replica, the worst 4, I'm giving it a 4 star rating.

Cool album with lots of interesting and catchy songs. Favorites: Golden Skans

I feel like this shouldn't be my like if thing, but I found it really energetic and fun and interesting.

I'm not sure what it is about it but it's really good in a way that I can't describe 8.67/10

Strikingly a very good album of capable indie rock. In the same vein as the Strojes and Interpol this guitar heavy album has songs with hooks for days. The track that I originally fell in love with, Golden Skans, still sounds fresh and instantly recognizable. I enjoyed this record so much I played it all the way through 2x before moving on. Each play reveals a new layer to both the lyrics and the music. It doesn’t break new ground, but it is a record that 20 years on should find a place in the rotation. Solid no skip record.

4.9 really good

3,75 arrondi à 4

Oh this was fun

I almost rolled my eyes out my sockets at the thought of _another_ mid to late 2000s UK landfill indie rock band, but this was fun, energetic, frantic. I do love a band where the bass is the driving force, and the basslines on this are powerful. Standouts were "Gravity's Rainbow" (solid Pynchon reference), and "Golden Skans"

I liked it. Pretty cool instrumentals behind a somewhat generic indie rock song set. Felt a lot shorter than it was

abwechslungsreich, mit power und melodie. entdeckung?!

Hey! I know these songs.... 4

Neat, still digesting it tho.

Absolutely sick, big banger mode

Another one of these bands I've never heard of. This band is really fun and energetic. I'm glad to get introduced to them! Not my normal type of music but I could see myself listening to them again.

é daora, bem psicodélico, um lance meio apenas um show

I didn’t have particular strong feelings towards Klaxons during the Nu-Rave era of NME. I wasn’t into them but found them to be catchy chart botherers. That’s true, but the album tracks are much more interesting. Darker and more manic than the single releases, bits which remind of their contemporaries such as The Horrors. More fun than I’d expected.

This may very well be the dorkiest album I've ever heard. I say this as a Weird Al fan. That being said, they are talented dorks. There is hardness that pops up, weird falsetto voices, nice quirky lyrics & unique soundscapes. The album really is a unique listen & hits my music funny bone. 4

I had forgotten how well I knew this album. I must have listened to it a lot when it came out. Some good tunes.

This brings me back a good decade or two. I remembered Golden Skans and It’s Not Over Yet from its heavy Triple J rotation back in the day, I don’t think I’ve listened to Klaxons since then. A good piece of nostalgia.

Groovy

Thought this would be rubbish based on the name and Britishness of the band but thoroughly enjoyed this album. Loosely gives Interpol vibes.

I don’t like 2000s indie, but this had enough energy and groove to effectively separate itself from its folkier cousins.

I kind of enjoyed this, but I don't like that almost every recent album is from some unknown indie band and has this vibe. Low 4.

Pretty solid, nothing spectacular but solid front to back. Guy sounds a bit like Damon Albarn.

Was pleasantly surprised by this one, hadn’t heard anything about this band but I found this to be a great listen. 4 stars

Great album, pity they never made another good one.

The glory days of nu-wave

Definitely is skewed positively by nostalgia but I think the singles are genuinely great and the rest of the album is relatively interesting.

Really enjoyed this one. I need to dig deeper into their discography.

Interesting album, my first listen. I would imagine they were or are great live.

Seeeehhhrrrr Experimental aber wenn man Bock drauf hat schon krasses Album. Maybe bei LSD fickt es ein komplett weg

some songs were too intense for me, but overall I thought this was a great album!!

So the first couple of times I tried to have it on in the background during a car ride and I couldn't really listen to it. I recognized one of the songs as a radio hit though. I then truly listened to it and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's a little bit mainstream but it was still solid and with its own sound.

Yes! Albums like this are why I'm doing this. Love it. Going 4 for now, but it's a 4.5 for me, maybe eventually 5.

I kind of liked this album at first but needed to listen a few more times. Then I couldn't quite put my finger on what I liked or what songs I liked so I kept listening. I've probably had it on repeat for a week, which is a good sign that I'm not sick of it. I feel like this dance rock band and genre kind of spelled doom for more traditional rock (which I love) and ushered in even newer variants of dance and pop trying to be rock (which I hate). Still, I dig their sound - jangly keys, drum tracks, and all. Favorite tracks were Two Receivers (rocking start), Atlantis to Interzone (yeah that synth loop is over the top but great tempo), Golden Skans (more subdued), Totem on the Timeline (reminded me of Franz Ferdinand meets Interpol), Isle of Her (something about that repeated mantra), Gravity's Rainbow (kick ass bass and guitar), Magick (major tempo and dancy beats), and Its Not Over Yet (another uptempo delivery). Geez, I almost named all the songs there. Got me thinking about a 5 but not quite.

Catchy tunes with good driving beats throughout, but doesn't hold up on close listen. They get a cool riff or chorus and then just repeat them over and over. So, it works best as background music, which isn't really a good thing to say about an album. That said, the only song I didn't like was Atlantis to Interzone - it was a bit much, particularly in the chorus. I'd call it a 3.5 and round up to a 4 because I dug it as something to bop along to while doing other stuff and wouldn't mind revisiting. Favorite tracks: Two Receivers (cool start), Totem on the Timeline, Gravity's Rainbow, Four Horsemen of 2012 (cool end).

yeah this shit’s FUN

This can easily jump up to 5 one day.

top 3: - two receivers - golden skans - it’s not over yet

This is one of those albums I really wish I had discovered back when it first came out, because I know I would’ve been all over it. They do a great job blending indie rock and punk energy with swirling neo-psychedelia. What really stands out are the hyperactive synth lines that mimic rave motifs, but still feel raw and lo-fi in a way that fits perfectly with the band’s DIY indie aesthetic.

I heard the klaxons klaxoning

One of the first albums with almost all the songs I enjoyed

Wow, nice sound

I'll be revisiting this in the near future!

It was quite enjoyable. I liked it, not every little aspect of it, but I liked it pretty much.

Way better than i expected going into this album.

Really cool start to the album, I love the distorted drums and crunchy synths. Like a blend of Radiohead, Muse, and The Mars Volta. Unfortunately, I'm going to give my least favorite feedback to give for a band: I don't love the vocals and I think they don't really fit the sound that well. Alright I love the second track. Great energy. Different from the first song, and I'm worried that listening further will give me songs that aren't that cohesive but I'm grooving either way. Track 3 is like a blend of TV on the Radio and Arctic Monkeys. I'm really feeling like I'm being thrown around between different inspirations while listening. By the end I really enjoyed this and I have to recommend it to others!

Favorite Track: Golden Skans

Favorite songs: Totem on the Timeline, Atlantis to Interzone, Two Receivers, Gravity's Rainbow, Magick Least favorite songs: Isle of Her 4/5

претензий нет, но 5 не поставлю)

This was a pleasant surprise. Dancy indie rock with a sci-fi edge.

Whatever happened to nu-rave? I think it was best it was allowed to gently curl up and die in its corner - this was the first major release of the genre, and no-one else could get near it, not even these guys with their follow-up, Surfing the Void. I rather like this - some seriously odd lyrics abound but it's very well-read. You know Golden Skans. Of course you do, it was the sound of 2007. A rather good cover of Not Over Yet as well. Do you know what, I'm going 4 stars. It's bizarre but worth it.

A pretty good album, I liked Golden Skans, As Above So Below and It's Not Over yet the most.

Favorite Track: It's Not Over Yet

a messy, yet fierce colorful collage of sound... a real punchy, poppy alternative rock album that feels like a collaboration with a garage indie rock group and a few martians from saturn. seriously, with a name like "the klaxons"? if you like both the arctic monkeys and oingo boingo, you'll like what's being presented to you through your stereo. many songs hook you in pretty fast, it has great energy and great production value as well. it's ambitious, but the sound ain't for everyone.

Was familiar with many of the tracks 4-5 singles I think - enjoyed the album - wonder if I’d have enjoyed it if not heard before

If I had my hands on this album in 2007, oh boy would this have been on repeat. I recognized one song possibly from some music platform playlist. It reminds me a lot of Bloc Party. Pretty wide range of the genre (whatever genre this is) with a decent diversity of sound on this album. Even though my musical taste has changed over nearly 20 years this still is pretty damn good. 8/10

I'm not going to pretend that this is the greatest album of all time but at this point it's clear that I have a bias for 2000's garage rock style. 8/10

Gave me 1990s festival vibes with its pounding gated drums and heavy synthetic. Got me bouncing around the room

I was semi familiar with some of the singles on this, but had never given it a proper listen, and honestly, I wonder why I waited so long. This really surprised me with how fun and energetic almost every song on here was, I would suggest the singles are the best tracks, but I think this was a really worthwhile. 4 stars.

Interesting listen. Hard to stay engaged but good background tunes.

Great album, 2 huge hits

4/5. It feels like progressive pop, the melodies are ones I would find in older progressive rock bands but add a driving bassline and some synths. The vocals are fun and the band does a good job at achieving that futuristic sound/theme they are going for. It's definitely a repeated listen for me, I did lose interest in some songs but overall, this was my jam. Best Song: Atlantis to Interzone, Golden Skans, Gravity's Rainbow, Two Receivers

I loved the energy and the weirdness of it, they push the indie rock/post-punk sound far into new territory (new rave?). I really liked how innovative they are and how fresh the album sounds, they throw a bunch of new ideas into every new song and for the most part it works great. I loved the production, most of the songs are very layered and complex. They have big arrangements, the mixes are excellent to keep this complexity without sounding saturated most of the time (the chorus of "As Above So Below" was indeed too saturated for my taste). The pacing of the record is excellent too, it's super upbeat and once it starts it never lets go, even when they go a bit slower. The weaker song for me was "Isle Of Her" as it's a bit too simple and slow, but it wasn't too bad, the hidden track was also very bland. Everything else was pretty good, I loved "Atlantis To Interzone", "Golden Skans", "Magick" and "It's Not Over Yet". Also I disliked very much the cover art, this album deserved better.

This was a great vibe for a sunny Friday morning with some good songs playing. My favorite was probably "Gravity's Rainbow."

This was just good fun, I've heard some of the songs before but never thought of them, then heard them and was like "Oh yeah, this is good stuff" which is a testemant to it.

I love Thomas Pynchon, although I did give up about 150 pages into Gravity's Rainbow a couple years ago and haven't gone back to it yet. I read The Crying of Lot 49 in 2022, then earlier in 2025 I read Inherent Vice and Mason & Dixon. I also watched Hangmen Also Die! (1943) in 2020 I am mainly familiar with Klaxons from this passage in a 2022 interview with Bob Dylan: Later in the interview, Dylan discussed some of the artists he had seen perform live. “Some I’ve seen live,” he said. “The Oasis Brothers, I like them both, Julian Casablanca, the Klaxons, Grace Potter. I’ve seen Metallica twice. I’ve made special efforts to see Jack White and Alex Turner. Zac Deputy, I’ve discovered him lately. He’s a one-man show like Ed Sheeran, but he sits down when he plays.” https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/bob-dylan-favourite-modern-musicians/ Which is funny because of how incongruous Bob Dylan and "landfill" indie are. Since I was 7 and much too young for Club 18-30 in 2007, I haven't consciously listened to Klaxons, but I wasn't too surprised by the sound -- "Franz Ferdinand" is one of the tags, which checks out. I haven't read Burroughs or Gibson, but I love Sister by Sonic Youth which I believe takes some of the technobabble from Neuromancer. The music is decent, and charmingly 2007. I'm now wondering if I have heard Gravity's Rainbow "Come with me, come with me, we'll travel to infinity" before, or just something similar. I like it in any case.

Never heard of these guys before, but definitely enjoyed the album. It sounds fresh and accomplished. Was considering giving this one 5 stars, but the final two tracks are pretty weak and brought down the average a bit.

Este disco fue un bombazo y nunca volvieron a este nivel. Mejor esto que nada. En favoritos: "Two Receivers", "Golden Skans", "As Above, So Below", "Gravity's Rainbow" y "It's Not Over Yet". Un grandísimo disco de los 2000.

ovo je toliko neobično, sirovo, nesuzdržano, ne znam, sviđa mi se

I didn't know them before. I really like their music!

Nije cili album dobar ali singlovi su fakat jaki jaki

This was better than most of the Brit pop stuff I’ve never heard of. Would listen again.

8.5/10 Favorite Songs: two receivers, atlantis to interzone, golden skans, totem on a timeline, as above as below, gravity's rainbow, forgotten works, magick Least Favorite Song: four horsemen of 2012

It was good i liked it a lot.

Indie delight

This was a nice surprise! Never heard of this band and was digging the sounds. Especially liked the first three songs.

Surprised by how much I enjoyed this. Great, fun record

Never really heard of these guys outside of one song. Really enjoyed the overall vibe of this album

The "New Rave" movement was very brief but good fun, and I don't mind it being documented in the list. Excellent singles, and good energy throughout the album.

Quite a fun listen. It's high energy, has catchy hooks. Some of the vocals are a bit screamy but it's not over the top. Can't make heads or tails of the lyrics on a casual listen but there seem to be lots of references sprinkled in

Like the Wiki says, very reminiscent of Bloc Party and Franz Ferdinand. Never heard this before (except Golden Skans which reminds me of the Dandy Warhols) , but really enjoyed it. Lots of elements of an era/bands that are right up my alley Highlights: golden skans

Hate for British aside, pretty good

They keep coming up in my random playlist generator but I wasn't too impressed with the singles. The rest of the album is amazing though. Should have searched them out earlier. Moving them into my steady rotation.

Didn’t expect to like it because of the genre but very fun catchy prog grunge album

Never listened to anything from this band, but I'm a fan. Surprised this came out in 2007, sounds more recent. Some Cage the Elephant vibes which I dig.

1st half is 3.5 second half is 4.

Enjoyed this album. A bit all over the place, stylistically. Leans into being a bit absurd. Fun time.

Enjoyed it

solid indie rock record

It’s only the Arctic Monkeys that survived the British indie rock fad, nobody really talks about other bands from this era. They’re out of relevance but I do like this album. Lead vocalist is married to Keira Knightley, lucky bastard…

This was pretty good. Strong Foster the People vibes here (which is fine with me) if not quite as good. 3.6

Reminds me a bit of early Arctic Monkeys at times, but more interesting in a lot of areas.

Never heard of this band before. Pretty good. A lot like Franz Ferdinand, and the Killers. So if you like those bands you will probably like this.

Never heard of this group but I'll check out more of their stuff.

Great album!

Oh yeah, I dig this.

Never heard of Klaxons before this, but Myths of the Near Future really surprised me. I went in totally blind and came out a fan. It’s chaotic in a good way — like a mix of indie rock, dance punk, and some weird cosmic energy. The whole thing has a raw, energetic vibe that keeps it interesting from start to finish. The songs bleed into each other with a kind of manic cohesion that somehow works. It’s not something I’d normally seek out, but I’m glad I gave it a shot — definitely a hidden gem. Favorite song: Two Receivers.

I unapologetically love this album and have for a long time. It's just a fucking blast.

Two Receivers // Atlantis To Interzone // Golden Skans // Totem On The Timeline // Magick // It’s Not Over Yet //

The klaxons remind me of high school nights of fifa tournaments and pot. Gladen Skans is featured on FIFA10... hence the nostalgia

I don't know if this is good rave music per se, but compared to what we've had recently this sounded good and I'd listen again. 3.5 rounded up.

Didn't know what to expect at all. Was really surprised. Some of the tracks sounded familiar. I actually really enjoyed it. Highlights: Atlantis To Interzone Golden Skans Forgotten Works

It's funny to listen to this 'nu-rave' album back without that term being rammed into your skull. This is actually more of a punk album. A lot more racous than I remember.

This was surprisingly nice! I realised while listening that I was familiar with some of the songs, even though I've never heard of this band. The entire album was fun and catchy, and sure, maybe it sounded like a typical indie rock record, but the prog elements added some bite to it. Would reccomend for sure. 4 stars

Never heard of these guys before! Love the album and will definitely be listening to it again. Nothing too flashy here, just good old (not that old) indie rock similar to Franz Ferdinand or Cage the elephant

Golden Skans WASNT in FIFA????? I enjoyed this ⭐⭐⭐⭐

berty godo

Very good. It's dancy, it's noisy, it's fun

Fun album, ill hold on to this one

Not familiar with the Klaxons, but this album was a lot of fun. Not every song was amazing, but there were plenty of rad bass and guitar lines throughout to make this a 4/5.

Good album! Reminds me of TV on the Radio and Bloc Party had a baby or something. 3.5/5

Electro-dance-pop tends to be pretty hit or miss for me, but I could vibe with this album. I felt like there was a lot of interesting cross-pollination at work here. Some songs felt like MGMT or Muse, others like Mars Volta. All of it worked for me. Only downside I found is that the production left a lot to be desired in many places. Vocal mixing was fine, but I found the bass (while warm) to be overpowering at times and the drums to sound a bit over-compressed. Hard to put my finger on, but ultimately it has this feeling of cheapness that I feel like is an artifact of this particular era in music. Out of the gate there is some element on Two Receivers that reminds me of SOAD -- can't put my finger on it, but its there. Second track, Atlantis To Interzone, is a standout that errs into proggy territory. I can't help but hear this as a Mars Volta song. Golden Skans is a solid single with catchy. Isle of Her is a wonky one, but I really like it. The synthline that underpins it is something straight out of Odd Future. It's Not Over Yet is another favorite of mine on here. Nothing revolutionary, but it is a well-written song that I can get behind. All around solid 4 IMO.

Perfectly fuzzy punk-ish rock album. Not really sure how to describe that genre, but whatever it was I liked it. The guitar and synths were just the perfect amount of weird to not cross the line. Low 4 in my books

GOOD ALBUM, NICE SOUND. Not much else to ssay. Had head Golden Skans before Favorite Tracks: As Above So Below

Pretty interesting and fun to listen to.

Fun, high energy brit pop

I like this. A dance/club vibe with a 90's feel.

There were several bands around this period that combined new rave and dance punk with a post-punk undertone (see Late of the Pier) and this album is one of the most consistently solid outputs from this specific time. I like how the songs don’t overstay their welcome. They’re quick and dirty, there and gone again, as any band with a punk aesthetic should be. 3.7/5

What was that ending

I heard the hit off of this album, but never listened to the whole thing. It was surprisingly great.

## In-Depth Review of *Myths of the Near Future* by Klaxons *Myths of the Near Future*, the debut album by British band Klaxons, released in January 2007, is often heralded as a significant entry in the "new rave" genre. This album melds elements of indie rock, electronic music, and punk, creating a sound that is both energetic and eclectic. The following review delves into various aspects of the album, including its lyrics, music, production quality, themes, and overall influence on the music scene. ### Lyrics The lyrics of *Myths of the Near Future* are characterized by a blend of surrealism, mythology, and cultural references. Klaxons' songwriting often explores themes of escapism and existentialism, drawing on literary and mythological influences. - **Surreal Imagery**: Songs like "Atlantis to Interzone" feature vivid imagery that evokes a sense of adventure and otherworldliness. The title itself suggests a journey from a mythical place to a more contemporary setting, reflecting a desire to escape reality. - **Cultural References**: Tracks such as "Totem on the Timeline" contain lines that juxtapose historical figures with modern contexts, creating a playful yet thought-provoking narrative. The lyric "At Club 18-30 I met Julius Caesar, Lady Diana and Mother Theresa" exemplifies this blending of past and present. - **Existential Themes**: The song "As Above So Below" encapsulates philosophical musings on fate and existence, with its chorus resonating with listeners who appreciate deeper meaning in pop music. Overall, the lyrics contribute to an atmosphere that is both whimsical and introspective, allowing listeners to interpret them in various ways. ### Music Musically, *Myths of the Near Future* is a dynamic fusion of genres that defies easy categorization. - **Genre Fusion**: The album incorporates elements from rock, electronic dance music (EDM), and punk. Tracks like "Gravity's Rainbow" feature driving guitar riffs paired with electronic beats that create an infectious energy. - **Instrumentation**: The use of synthesizers alongside traditional rock instrumentation gives the album a unique sound. The interplay between guitars and synths is particularly notable in songs like "Golden Skans," where melodic hooks are complemented by rhythmic electronic layers. - **Production Techniques**: Produced by James Ford (known for his work with Arctic Monkeys), the album showcases polished production while retaining an underground feel. The layering of sounds creates depth in tracks like "Magick," where various sonic elements collide to produce a rich auditory experience. ### Themes Thematically, *Myths of the Near Future* navigates through concepts of modernity versus mythology, escapism, and cultural critique. - **Modernity vs. Mythology**: The juxtaposition of ancient myths with contemporary life reflects a longing for meaning in an increasingly chaotic world. This theme resonates throughout tracks like "Isle of Her," which draws inspiration from Greek mythology. - **Escapism**: Many songs express a desire to escape mundane realities. The euphoric nature of tracks like "It's Not Over Yet" embodies this yearning for liberation through music and dance. - **Cultural Critique**: The album also critiques societal norms and expectations. By referencing pop culture icons alongside historical figures, Klaxons invite listeners to question the value placed on fame and legacy. ### Influence Upon its release, *Myths of the Near Future* garnered significant attention within the music industry and among fans alike. - **Cultural Impact**: The album was pivotal in popularizing the "new rave" movement, which sought to revive elements of 90s rave culture within a contemporary context. Although this label has been debated regarding its validity, it undeniably positioned Klaxons at the forefront of a musical resurgence. - **Legacy**: Tracks such as "Golden Skans" and "Gravity's Rainbow" have endured as anthems within indie rock circles. Their catchy hooks and innovative sound have influenced subsequent artists exploring similar fusions of genres. - **Critical Reception**: While initially receiving mixed reviews—some critics dismissed it as merely hype-driven—retrospective evaluations have recognized its artistic merit. It is now viewed as an essential part of early 2000s British music history. ### Pros and Cons #### Pros - **Innovative Sound**: The blending of rock with electronic elements creates a fresh listening experience that stands out from contemporaries. - **Catchy Melodies**: Many tracks feature memorable hooks that contribute to their appeal as pop songs. - **Lyrical Depth**: The incorporation of surrealism and cultural references adds layers to the listening experience, inviting deeper analysis. #### Cons - **Hype vs. Reality**: The initial marketing as part of the "new rave" movement led to inflated expectations that some listeners felt were not met. - **Vocal Limitations**: Some critics noted that while ambitious in scope, the vocal delivery sometimes struggled to match the intensity required by certain tracks. - **Inconsistency**: While many songs shine brightly, others may feel less cohesive or impactful compared to standout tracks. ### Conclusion *Myths of the Near Future* by Klaxons remains a compelling debut that captures the spirit of its time while pushing musical boundaries. Its combination of innovative sounds, thought-provoking lyrics, and cultural commentary ensures its place in music history as both a product and critique of early 2000s youth culture. Despite some criticisms regarding hype and vocal execution, its influence persists in shaping contemporary indie rock and electronic music landscapes. As listeners continue to revisit this album years after its release, it serves as a testament to Klaxons' unique vision in an ever-evolving musical landscape.

Another pleasant surprise of an album that was very enjoyable

This definitely deserves a second listen

I liked this. Weird, but great energy. Honestly I was a bit fearful in that this is one of those records that apparently had only a very short stint on the 1001, and they are a UK band. Usually this means the record isn't all that good... but this is the exception that proves the rule, I guess.

I have fond memories of this album and then memories of their subsequent stuff being surprisingly bad. On listening for the first time in years, the album does not hold up as well as I remember. The singles are very enjoyable still, but the rest of the album falls a bit flat - and indicates that the follow up albums being poor shouldn't have been as much of a surprise as it was. Still giving it four stars, possibly a little nostalgia tinted, but I do really like the singles from this album, so it's kind of deserved too.

Better than I thought it would be after all this time. Despite the stench of madeleines as it was a sound track to a drunken trip to Finland c2007

Forgot klaxons existed. Very mid 2000s uni times indie sounding so it drew me in. Quite a few filler tracks but enough good tracks to keep me entertained. Nowt special but enjoyed it. 3.5 territory

Liked the fun, peppy, energy of this one overall.

Expected to be boring but fair bit of nostalgia

What a throwback!! Atlantis To Interzone - took me straight back to year 7 music class where we'd spam the exact same dj button and the woman's voice Golden Skans and It's Not Over Yet are absolute tunes!!! Big songs during my younger years that I still listen to now I enjoyed the rest of the album, but it wasn't quite as good as the singles 4 ⭐️

Me gusta

Enjoyed this alot more than i feared going into it.

Again another album / band first time hearing. I don’t hate it. Don’t love it either. It’s got a sound that was at the time new and interesting. And one of the band members married Keira Knightley. One of the reasons most guys get into music is to get girls and this guy aced it. I might add an extra Star for that. I did.

I pride myself on keeping a really open mind when it comes to music, and I try to just appreciate what I’m hearing without getting hung up on whether it’s culturally significant or derivative. But I’m starting to think this 1001 list is going to beat that out of me when it comes to indie brit pop/rock bands from the early 2000’s. It was an era comprised mostly of enjoyable-enough tunes to have in your headphones while you went about your day…not albums I need to hear before I die. These albums served their purpose…20 years ago. Am I really supposed to pretend there’s some staying power here? That said, enjoyable-enough album. Not even moderately interesting, but enjoyable. 4/5 Highlights: Gravity’s Rainbow Forgotten Works

Good listen

I'd never heard of this band before. It sounds like what I wish most of the new wave bands on this list sounded like. Not really sure I'd listen again, but I had a good time while I was here.

All over the fucking shop. They tend to be better when they're a bit more melodic (to my ears, anyway), and that's saying something because I gave Teenage Fanclub a 1/5 for being to sugary-sweet melodic. The album is a wild ride, but I wanted to listen to it again after an hour of listening to something else. So... That's a good thing, I guess.

Never heard of them but enjoyed the album and found it interesting!

Pretty cool, sort of electro-punk rock. A solid listen overall.

I was about to call this another "flash in the pan indie band album I should hear before I die" (which I guess is correct), but this one was actually pretty good. I remember this band used to be really hyped, and the album does deliver more than expected. Versatile and very consistent. Whatever happened to these guys. 3.5/5

A fantastic 3-song-run to start with but just loses momentum toward the end. A rounded-up 4

Saw the music video for Magick when I was a young teen (MTV I think?) and it fucking haunted me. For whatever reason it just grossed me out and was very disturbing. It's stuck with me throughout the years. Watched it now as an adult when this appeared on my list and it still just disturbs me and twists my stomach up. The rest if the album is quiet pleasant and enjoyable to listen to. Magick itself is an ok song, definitely weaker compared to the rest of the album though

Never heard of them but dang that was pretty good. Always good hearing a band where the bassist and the drummer aren't background players. Really felt high speed in your face but really precise with it

A non-stop energy ride that simultaneously sounds like so much of what was happening at the time and nothing like it at all. This album seemed to be full of "tracks you remember really liking but completely forgot existed." Does that speak to anything? I don't know, it's early.

Though these myths now sound more like the recent past, each track contains a melody, lick, or line worthy of space in the crowded mid-aughts canon of UK indie rock.

Really liked it

I hated Golden Skans and the sort of people who liked the Klaxons in 2007, which is a shame, because the front end of this album is absolutely mint. It drops off in the back end, but I'm there for it.

Pretty generic but the hits carry it

Best Song: Gravity's Rainbow. Quick hit little ditty with a catchy chorus. Worst Song: Forgotten Works. More like "forgettable works", am I right? Overall: I like it. Punchy, punctate tracks with an upbeat and dance-y rhythm. Noisy in a nice way. The whole album is fun and feels like a party.

J.G. Ballard’s Myths of the Near Future is a collection of short stories that feels eerily prophetic. Ballard’s knack for exploring the psychological impact of technological and societal changes is on full display. While some stories are more successful than others in fully developing their unsettling premises, the overall collection is a thought-provoking and often disturbing exploration of the potential pitfalls of our modern world. Ballard’s prose is sharp and economical, and his ability to create unsettling atmospheres is undeniable. However, a few stories felt rushed, leaving their conclusions somewhat unsatisfying. Despite these minor flaws, Myths of the Near Future is a compelling read that will stay with you long after the final page.

This is a brilliant album really let down by subpar vocals. The weak tenor and cloudy falsetto are at odds with the stanky bass and machined synthetic perfection. Some incredibly interesting sounds delivered almost perfectly but shakily with the vestiges of human frailty.

good album, saved it. +ive heard a few songs before but never knew the name

Better than it was in 2007. Maybe it was ahead of its time but I used to really hate it apart from maybe 2 tracks. 3.7
