Parachutes
ColdplayParachutes is 90s pop/rock essential. Chris Martin sounds great and there are plenty of catchy hooks and memorable lyrics on this record
Parachutes is 90s pop/rock essential. Chris Martin sounds great and there are plenty of catchy hooks and memorable lyrics on this record
Critics may refer to the band as being contemporaries of the Beatles, Rolling Stones, etc. but I think that’s a bid generous. This is good for what it is - early American / southern rock. I’m sure they are fun to watch jam but this didn’t really do it for me
Hell ya some steely Dan! I wish I had heard this before Aja as I think this is a great intro to Steely Dan. It’s slightly jazzy and proggy, but still has catchy tunes. King of the world doesn’t sit with me right as an album closer
5 stars. This album was great. Catchy, interesting and creative
5 star. Was going to give 4.5 but fuck it - A masterpiece by Alice and the band. One of my favorites when I was in high school, mostly for the shock rock value. But now now I see it has artistic value beyond that
Brazilian music. First song is about soccer
All my little words is good, otherwise sounds like sappy generic alternative/college/ Morrisey inspired music. Actually I was too harsh some of the songs are worth a listen
I have always had trouble getting into Depeche Mode, but I’m glad I gave this a shot. It had some r really strong moments
I mean.. it’s back in black. The hits are great, the deep cuts are great.
Not a huge fan of that he big spacey production. None of the tracks are 5 star for me but most are still enjoyable
Maybe ELP is an acquired taste. I listened to this and I enjoyed maybe half of it. I’ve enjoyed their studio stuff more than this
I thoroughly enjoyed this. Didn’t know what to expect from This artist I had never heard of. Was not disappointed and will definitely listen again soon
I think this was the first queen album I listened to as a teenager. Instant classic. Aggressive but beautifully done. One of the best
There a few memorable tracks
More melodic than I expected
3 tracks in - giving me London calling vibes. Very diverse. About halfway through and I’m much less impressed.
Parachutes is 90s pop/rock essential. Chris Martin sounds great and there are plenty of catchy hooks and memorable lyrics on this record
Underwhelming. My favorite track was disorder
Very solid classic rock. The title track will always be a welcome listen for me. The rest of the tracks shine as well although I could do without a ballad like wasted time
Honestly I’m having trouble enjoying this. I’m not a fan of Young’s voice. I think his storytelling is unmatched but this is first and foremost music, which the timbre of voice strongly influences. I enjoy welfare mothers, and the tracks that bookend the album. Is seems this album requires a particular state of mind
I will never understand the appeal bob dylan has. I suppose if this were the 60s I may get it. With that said the 1st 2 tracks are good and it does make me feel sentimental
Definitely not my style but soft and relaxed so good music to listen to on a rainy morning. Karen Carpenter’s voice is great. Their arrangement of ‘Help’ is neat, and the instrumental outro is interesting. I would not listen to this outside of this project though
Although I recognize this album cover, I know very little about this release, or the flaming lips for that matter. After listening to it I can say I will definitely be digging deeper into the flaming lips discography. Very interesting story, and some great songs
Critics may refer to the band as being contemporaries of the Beatles, Rolling Stones, etc. but I think that’s a bid generous. This is good for what it is - early American / southern rock. I’m sure they are fun to watch jam but this didn’t really do it for me
I was expecting to be required to endure an hour of obnoxious noise, but I’m 3 tracks in and pleasantly surprised. It ended up being all alright album if the mood is right (relaxed)
This is the kind of music I enjoy in small amounts - a song or two. I listened to the album through then it started playing “similar” songs on Spotify and replayed several of the same songs I had just listened to and I didn’t notice. Not bad music by any means - just not memorable enough for me to go back to
Masterpiece? What more needs to be said. Whole thing is killer, including the 2nd half, which contains the less familiar tracks camera eye and witch hunt. Listening to moving pictures has really improved the shitty day I’m having
I’m an amateur when if comes to folk music. I have not listened too much to the Byrds, so I don’t know what to expect from this album. I’m enjoying the slide guitar and the tone on the rhythm guitar. I can definitely see myself returning to this. It had much more variety then I was expecting from a folk artist
So much energy! The lyrics deserve another review - I’ve been looking them up but it’s hard to focus on that and the music. The biggest problem I have with this is the repetitive sampling (it that what it’s called?) some of it is screechy and quite annoying.
This is clearly Dylan more mature and complex than on ‘Freewheelin ’, the other Dylan album I’ve listened to on this list. I still don’t get the fascination with his music. There is no sense of melody and his voice in goddamn awful
Definitely a record that deserves a deeper dig… what was happening socially, politically, and around the world in the late 90s? Quite a bit of variety and his voice is top
This was alright but seems like ‘pop Brazilian music’
Not quite the Bowie I’m used to. It’s more experimental than I expected. May need several listens
After listening to this twice it really grew on me. Needs to be listened with headphones. Great tone.
This sounds like they have some more musical maturing to experience. It has good tunes but doesn’t hold a candle to sticky fingers or exile. I think the US release (with paint it black and without take it or leave it, out of time, etc) is probably better
Wasn’t impressed. Not a fan of this style of music
Rather bland grunge in my opinion
I like the more energetic and upbeat tracks. I think that is where this artist really shines. I don’t understand the hype around Wilco in general, but I think it may require more attention to the lyrics
Love the funky guitar and the fuzz tones.
Reminds me of summers in middle school developing my personal musical tastes. Such a great record and it still holds up today
In my opinion all of these songs are so similar. Fast and loud with the same guitar tones. The only thing it has going for it is that you can hear how much they have influenced other artists
I like ZZ Top but this is just basic classic rock. Nothing spectacular
Strong 3 stars. It’s a good blend of hip hop and funk, but I find it very self aggrandizing.
Even though I prefer bon Scott as a singer, I think back in black was a better album
I love the grooves. I never thought I could hear something so 90s
I was truly expecting to dislike this (English folk music??) but it’s actually great. The melodies are great and this isn’t like folk music I was expecting.
This is not my favorite Rolling Stones, but I am very familiar with it. I think side 1 is the stronger of the two, but they’re both great.
Soft 4 stars. Had low expectations for an album with a scorpion on the cover, but was not disappointed.
Soft 4. The first half had me but I started to lose interest after the interlude. Will definitely return though
2 stars. Not because the music is bad. It’s actually alright. I just don’t understand why it’s on this list. There are much better early 90s hip hot groups
Soft 4 stars. Great collection of folk rock songs. I had no idea that Fred Neil existed let alone wrote everybody’s talkin’. Reminds me of futurama.
Hell ya some steely Dan! I wish I had heard this before Aja as I think this is a great intro to Steely Dan. It’s slightly jazzy and proggy, but still has catchy tunes. King of the world doesn’t sit with me right as an album closer
If I could give this more than 5 stars I would. My favorite radiohead album (I think). I love the rhythms, I love the melodic track/s (optimistic). The whole thing is excellent
solid 3 stars. Not really my style but definitely worth a listen. Her voice is nice and the songwriting and instrumentation is interesting. Easy to listen to - reminds me of a relaxing summer afternoon. Also interesting is her connection to other artists and musicians in the late 60s - Jim Morrison, Velvet Underground and Warhol.
Strong 4 stars. I’m still new to Billy Joel so his stuff may need some time to resonate with me. Sometimes his lyrics strike me as cheesy, but I love his songwriting and I think his storytelling is top-shelf.
Soft 4 stars. Very interesting... almost every track was a different style. Some songs like the anchor song are growers, while a track like human behavior is an obvious hit. The album remains strong unlike some on this list that fade away into repetition on the second half
Strong 4 stars. One of my college favorites. Looking forward to going through the whole album again. So many great songs that make me nostalgic about my home state. The only think keeping it away from 5 stars are the little instrumental tracks.. too overdone
Soft 4 stars. Such an inspiration to big band jazz music. Really brings me back to my high school and college days, although Basie's group is of course much tighter and put together. I personally prefer smaller jazz groups (rather than big band) but it's obvious to me why this recording made it on this list.
My first foray into Daft Punk (and house music in general). I would have to say I’m disappointed. Extremely repetitive. I’m sure they are fun to dance to in a club, but sitting at home is not the right setting for this
Wow. So this was quite an endeavor to finish in 1 day but I got it done. I have to say I do prefer The Love Below more than Speakerboxxx, but in general they were both good. I will definitely be returning to outkast in the future
3 stars. Just not my style. I dont think these kind of love songs have aged well, although I do understand the importance of Marvin Gayes influence on other artists. Honestly just sounds corny to me. He does have a great voice though
Strong 3
5 stars. I’m pretty familiar with this album. I lump it in with Bowie’s other great albums (Ziggy Stardust, Heroes, Station to Station). This one feels more like a collection of songs that some of my other favorites, but maybe I’m being too hard on him
5 stars. Probably my favorite Bowie. Progressive, moody, thoughtful. And then there’s TVC15 now that’s just entertaining.
Soft 4 stars. Interesting music and I feel like I would return to this album, but it fits me best as background music
kind of cool to listen to it with headphones. I feel like it changes the experience to a more active one.
Strong 4 stars. So many interesting styles and it feels like a solid cohesive story throughout.
I love Paul simons voice and the rhythm in his music. Still feel like something about it is missing for me though.
Soft 4 stars. A clear inspiration to 90% of the music I listen to today. Also this sounds overtly sexual (put my brand on you? Tiger in your tank?!). He has a great voice.
2 stars. I think Kurt Cobain killed himself because he had to listen to this…. It’s actually not that bad but why is it on this list? The lyrics are bland, the music is not interesting enough to stand out, and Courtney’s voice isn’t good
3 stars. I appreciate what they are doing. Isolated, this album has interesting moments. But placed in the context of 1967, this had been done before. Revolver did all of this (and better) 6 months before.
Strong 3. Not sure what I was expecting but wasn’t this. May revisit his music, but only if I have more time to digest it
Solid 3 stars. Understandable addition to the list, but didn’t do much for me
Soft 4 stars. My first experience with Janis Joplin. I can wee why she was immensely popular at that time. She can wail! Anyway, it doesn’t earn 4 stars because the ‘acid rock’ sound isn’t at the top my my list.
Soft 3 stars. I mean his voice is great, and this music has a place during a date night or in my grandmothers dreams, but the songs just don’t interest me that much.
Soft 4 stars. Definitely interesting. I love how he can combine creepy content and hooks together
Smashing pumpkins is one of those bands that on paper I should love - alternative grunge with thoughtful lyrics and creative song writing. But honestly I just haven’t gotten into them, other than the flagship songs. Although I prefer Mellon Collie to Siamese Dream probably because the former had more energy
Just more Brit-pop / rock. Like a less interesting version of The Clash, sorry
1 Star - Don't know why it's on this list. It doesn't seem remotely psychadelic, which is what I thought his appeal to most people is.
Solid 4 Stars - great album that I've listened to several times before. There's something about it that may not completely click with me, which is why I haven't given it 5 stars.
Strong 4 stars. Great blend of folk songwriting and jazz. Drakes voice is also great. Will definitely return to this one
5 stars. My first album by a member of the fab 4, and this one is a classic. Band on the run is an amazing introduction song, then jet kicks it into high speed. Love this album
3 stars. Not bad but I’m not all about the 80s synth sound
3 stars. There were a few bangers in the beginning, but second half definitely not as memorable
3 stars. Good music, but soul is just not my style
3 stars. This ain’t for me but considering it came out in the 70s it’s definitely ground breaking. Very punky
Strong 4 stars. Honestly pretty awesome album. Surprised I haven’t heard before
3 stars. Not great. There’s something about how music was produced in this time that I don’t like. It’s echoey and honestly I don’t care for it
3.5 stars. Love the concept, and there are some good songs for me. I think it’s too industrial for my taste though
2 stars. It took me multiple tries just to get through this. Weird but Not very interesting - not a good combination!
3 Stars. I didn't find this terribly interesting. I like that it's instrumental, but the keyboard sounds dated. Steve Cropper's guitar work redeems it a little
3 stars. It’s good, but kind of basic 90s hip hop
3 stars. Its definitely influential, but I won't ever voluntarily listen to something like this. It is far too basic and uninteresting
3 stars. Great music to have on in the background, but I can’t actively listen to it
3 stars. They’re great at what they’re great at, but I hate the ballads
Soft 4 stars. A great variety of 70s style on here. As I usually find, ballads hold me back from giving this a higher score.
5 stars. I think this album is as close to perfect as Steely Dan gets. It has everything I want when I’m looking for something chipper and interesting
3 stars. Too much mellow folk style for me. I will return to fleet foxes, but not to this album
Soft 4 stars. Wasn’t sure what I o expect as I’m not familiar with willie Nelson. I think it’s good that the first album of his I listened to were covers. A bunch of beautiful songs. Glad I gave it a shot
Soft 4 stars. Another unknown piece of music that I thoroughly enjoyed
3 stars. He has a nice voice, but songs are kind of a bummer
Soft 4 stars. Hold pretty strong through the whole album
3 stars. There has to be better eastern music to use for this list. Kind of making me seasick
Strong 3 stars. Not a bad listen. Her voice is good, and the chords have a little more color than I was expecting from this style
Soft 4 stars. Never heard this debut and I consider myself a QotSA fan. Their roots with Kyuss are definitely evident, but with more musical diversity on this one.
Strong 4 stars. As Martin Popoff has said, “give me the money riff”. This album is filled with the slow grove metal money riffs that Pantera is famous for. Production does sound muffled though. And as a guitarist I do not care for dimebag-style shredding. It always sounds convoluted and out of place. Ballads also hold this album back (but shredding fits in much better there)
3 stars. Some of the tracks are interesting and filled with classic riffs (angel of death, postmortem, raining blood) but most of the album is just fast thrash. Not incredibly satisfying. It has its place but not usually my thing.
Soft 4 stars. What’s really holding this back is the length. If they cut about 3 songs it would be better. Just too repetitive. But overall a good listen
2 stars. Worst two tracks are in the beginning, but definitely improves. Much higher energy than some other psych rock on this list. With that said, I likely won’t return to this music
2 stars. A few OK tracks but nothing to write home about. Not entirely sure why it’s on this list?
Strong 4 stars
3 Stars. I want to like this more than I do. Great if you are in the mood for some southern blues rock, but not my favorite. Sounds great though - can hardly tell that it's live.
Strong 4 stars. First disc - great. I had no idea that “show me the way” and “baby I love your way” were from this live album. Second disc - good. A lot of energy but I’m worn out by jumpin jack flash.
Strong 3 stars. Overall the music is fine.. his voice is a little annoying. I do like the variety of styles though on the album. Tempos all over the place and good beats
Kind of bland and too poppy. Surprise that this is on this list
Soft 4 stars
Soft 4 stars. Nick drake is awesome. Such a voice and gorgeous music. A true gem that would have remained hidden if it wasn’t for this project. I look forward to his 3rd album (if it’s on this list).
3 stars. It’s so close to being great but every single song on here is just too long. They should have cut at least 1 chorus from each song, then this album might make 4 stars
3 stars. Nothing spectacular
3 stars. It has interesting instrumentation but not as interesting lyrically
5 stars. This album was great. Catchy, interesting and creative
4 stars. Great to listen to an album that has inspired to much modern music. This is not something I would be itching to listen to again, but worth it at least once
I mean, what is there to say. Its 15 minutes long with just as many tracks. It's hardcore punk from 1980. Influential, but I doubt many people are going to listen to this for its modern originality.
I always expected them to be a 1 hit wonder group, and while the other tracks on this record probably won't get a lot of repeated plays out of my speaker, Blur shows their value as a key 90s group. The guitar tones and textures are sublime, but the vocals and lyrics leave much to be desired (though I will admit I am no fan of Brit-pop).
There are 2 types of people - Nevermind people and In Utero People. I plant my feet firmly in the In Utero Camp. Brilliant, and reminds me of driving around in my first car with this in my cassette player.
While Alice Cooper (person) may have been the first to introduce horror and gore imagery into rock&roll, it should not be forgotten that early 1970s Alice Cooper (band) was one of beauty and variety. Interestingly, moments on this album (Alma Mater) remind me of McCartney's early solo work.
3 stars. Nothing interesting here to talk about. Just a lengthy pseudo-musical record that doesn’t do much for me
Strong 4 stars. Best Album Opener? YES. Another collection of great 90's hard rock and grunge.
Paul Simon's music has changed so much through his career. Listening to his discography as a whole would be rewarding, I'm sure.
Definitely grows on you
Interesting .. especially side 2
3.5 / 5
3 stars. A lot of variety. Maybe too much
3.5 stars. After a second listen it started to grow on me more.
4.5 stars but rising. I loved the hippie hangover vibe of this album.
4.5 stars. Really great listen. Sums up classic southern rock in a really neat package without being corny or cliche.
I love the variety in styles, but most of the tracks felt repetitive
4 stars. Was not a fan of Joni Mitchell until I listened to this. Much more interested now
3 stars. Some great melodies. Needs a big surround speaker situation to fully immerse in the Scandinavian greatness.
2 stars. Itsfar too lo-fi and noisy for my taste
3.5 stars. Nothing bad about this, but it just doesn't click like some of their earlier stuff does.
Good hip-hop. Nothing to blow me away. Will definitely have you tapping feet. Top 10 album covers that haven't aged well. Highlights: You Can't Stop the Prophet, D. Original, Come Clean, Jungle Music
The title track is one of my favorite love songs, always reminds me of Marcellus Wallace and Butch making a deal. Other than that, great tunes for a dinner party! Highlights: Let's Stay Together, La-la for you, I've never found a girl.
One of the best albums of the 90's, with probably the best song of the 90's (Jeremy). Feels unlike any other debut album. Not a bad track, and sound that is consistent with great production. Stand out tracks: Even flow, Alive, Black, Jeremy, Release
Decided to watch the videos for this one. James sounds excellent, as does the rest of the band. The 'classical' approach isn't an extremely interesting take, but definitely worth checking out.
4 stars. Very danceable, and less avant-garde than I feel some of their later stuff is
2.5 stars. Mostly post alternative screeching obnoxiousness
3.5 stars
4.5 stars. Such a classic - before Chris Martin and co went off the deep end. Great melodies, great bass lines, and such sentiment. Less than perfect d/t a whisper... RIP quality Coldplay
I can tell that there is so much here that inspired some of the best music (sabbath, Grateful Dead, zeppelin, etc) but I just do t care for how this sounds.
3 stars. I just can’t get in to Elvis Costello. I tried. Maybe when I’m older and more wise?
2 stars. The tracks that were actual songs were like 3-4 stars, but so much nonsense in between. Why?
5 star. Was going to give 4.5 but fuck it - A masterpiece by Alice and the band. One of my favorites when I was in high school, mostly for the shock rock value. But now now I see it has artistic value beyond that
3 stars. Definitely didn’t get this one
4 stars. Like most music that involves, Bowie this is more of an artistic statement than straightforward musical expression. Have never heard this before, but definitely love the collab during Bowie’s peak artistic years.
3.5 Stars. The bass really stands out on this album, but other than that doesn't do much for me. Despite the extremely short track lengths, the massive album runtime is too much.
3.5. Some great songs but honestly found most of it kind of dull
Honestly my favorite album on this list so far. Listening to it brought me back to all the times I listened to it in my bedroom as a teenager learning how to play since I’ve been loving you, and in my car listening to immigrant song. Some of my favorite songs of all time on here.
3.5 Stars. The good think about Frank Sinatra is you know what to expect in his music. The bad thing about his music is that you already know what to expect.
3-3.5 out of 5
4.5 stars
3.5 to 4 stars. It could be half this length and have the same effect. None of the songs are bad, but the record drags near the end as the same blues ideas are repeated
3 stars. I’ve never quite understood the appeal with this album. I think it just goes on and on too much. Maybe I don’t have a refined enough palate?
3.5 stars. Just not a fan of Brit pop/ rock
3.5 stars. I’m glad I listened, but not a record for me
4.5 Stars. Always a classic, just not perfect.
3.5 strs
5 stars. There is a lot of hate that this hasn’t aged well. Yes the sexual innuendoes are childish, and Anthony often can’t find the pitch. But who the fuck cares! This has a special place in my heart (and my 2000 accord coupe CD visor attachment RIP)
4.5 stars. What I love about the cure is that they take what made the 80s great ( over the top, moody, and reverberating sounds) and combine that with music and lyrics that have aged well.
3.5 Stars. Pretty impressive for 1977 - It's not my interest, but i feel like I can hear the influence for the later post-punk acts like Joy Division. I may consider listening again
4 stars. Although it’s loaded with hits and is a pop masterpiece, it doesn’t satisfy anything for me outside of that appetite. Still, TS will endure the test of time
3 stars. It was okay. None of the songs really stood out to me though
3.5 stars
4 stars. This was significantly better and more listenable than I thought it would be. Most of the other beat/ house music on this list has been…. Not great. definitely enjoyed this though.
2.5 stars. I had high hopes, but another record that just makes me car sick. Extremely lofi with questionable amounts of musicianship. Maybe it’s a grower? I will probably never find out.
2 stars. Just more electronic music that I must be too old to understand (although this released when I was 5). It’s alright for the background, but that’s all
3 stars. Everyone raves about this record but I honestly don’t care for it. Slow and uninteresting
3/5 ... very listenable and not any bad tunes, but idk why it's on this list. A bunch of covers, very few of which I feel have any pizzaz.
4.5 stars. A great solo debut by my favorite Beatle
4.5 stars. Incredible. Much more to Neil Young than meets the eye.
3.5 stars
4 stars
4 stars. Ive listened to this several times before. It takes a bit, but gets stronger each time.
