1001 Albums Summary

Noisy 90's grunge rock that really isn't my thing. Probably deserves another listen but only in the right setting.

In my mind, a perfect pop album. Blue-eyed soul (at it's finest) matched with masterful production and great songwriting equals a classic.

Amazing how many hits they can pack onto each and every record. I especially like the originals but the covers have that unique Beatles spin.

Beautifully crafted folk songs. Each song is a hit.

A Stone Cold Classic! Trend-setting, genre-defining, and historical. The production seems muddled but accurately reflects the atmosphere of the world in which it was recorded.

Wow! I had never even heard of this album until it popped up in the generator and I was blown away. John Grant is a man of enormous vocal talent and his voice carries this album through songs that are serious, silly, personal, and preposterous. I wish I had found this album sooner. It would have been on steady rotation for a decade.

The perfect review (not mine) The music is alternately quiet and fearsome, feathery light and sonically punishing. Several of the songs are at war with their own structure and end without clear resolution; the mad-scientist feel is often a kind of beautiful cacophony. Describing the album as prog-gospel would be a stretch, but not by much. Listen to Ladies and Gentlemen on headphones and you’ll develop a lump in your throat and may take up smoking again. It’s Wish You Were Here recorded by a guy who had his heart stepped on and has displayed it for all to see. Not every song explicitly pines for what was taken from Pierce, although tracks like “Broken Heart” keep listeners on that path

A punk masterclass! Brilliant album from start to finish that dared to break out of the mire that punk had become.

For listeners who had caught up with the Cardigans on their breakout album, Life, the group's third album was a confusing pastiche which included several conventional pop songs, but also added tracks with left-field arrangements and some (comparatively) disturbing lyrics. In reality, however, the group had simply returned to the mood and feel of their debut album.

Probably wouldn't end up in my collection but I can see why it's part of this collection. Makeba has a powerful and beautiful voice that reminds me of Nina Simone. A wonderful world music album.

An epic album that opened up new possibilities for what a record could be. While some of the "filler" tracks do little more than propel the story forward, the "meat" of the album is powerful and soaring and includes some of the greatest rock songs ever written.

This album is a hard one for me. I know I'm SUPPOSED to like it. I can tell why others do like it. I really WANT to like it... but I just don't. Buckley seems to be trying too hard to make his vocals do things that they don't have to. The songwriting and musicianship are top-class. The track listing and production are top-notch as well. I just don't like Buckley's voice. I have no problem with anyone claiming it is a 5 star album but it's just not for me.

What more can be said? Easily one of the top 5 rock albums of all time and a timeless masterpiece. There is not a wrong note or a bad song on the entire album.

I don't really see what sets this album apart from the myriad of other '80s-influenced pop-punk albums that came along in the early 00s. Yes, there are hooks and singles that make you sit up and take notice temporarily but for the most part, it's just formulaic drivel for the masses. When a pop-punk-dance album just drones unnoticed in the background, it's time to move on.

A classic psych rock album. A trend setter and a precursor of things to come. RIP Syd.
