Reviews (page 15 of 15)

This is an album that I will defend as actually being very good. I’ve enjoyed every listen, and I got this by accident a few years back as I forgot to cancel my VMP membership and it shipped. Listened then and liked it, so I will keep listening and liking it.

Wasn't a massive fan of it then and still not now. Why Does My Heart is a tune and respect for the fact every tune got used in something.

Yeh good that.

Eh. It's okay.

Moby good

A victim of its own success

Nice morning vibes

The songs sound one-paced and samey.

Excellent album. It’s a regular on my in car playlist. Sensational.

I like it slightly more than Natalie Portman does, it's pleasant but it's very bland. Vacuous almost.

Flips between a 5 and a 2. Some amazing tunes but then the rest lets it down

This was fucking everywhere for a couple of years at the start of the millennium but don't think I've ever listened to it all the way through. Remember the singles and love the first 4 tracks. Porcelain being the undoubted highlight. After that its all new but its a great listen. Think my distrust of dance music must be the reason i ignored it at the time but this is very good. Maybe a few tracks too long but a solid 4/5.

I must have been one of the few people that didn't buy this album in 1999/2000. At the time I didn't think I'd be keen on it. As it transpires, I was right, although I didn't mind it. Some of the singles are almost classics and most of the other tracks were better than I expected. However, it just doesn't interest me or click with me for some reason. A competent, pleasant, commercially very successful album with some stand out moments, but overall pretty forgettable. 3/5.

Meh, album muzyki reklamowo filmowej utrzymanej w klimatach downtempowym, bez calosciowego konceptu, bardzo bialy miks murzynskich sampli, nawet chorki gospelowe i skrecze rodem z dja premiera sie znajda, kawalki ktore najbardziej mi trafily, to te ktore sample juz znalem z innych materialow, same "wokale" mobyego to raczej liryczna recytacja, bardziej niz samego albumu jestem ciekawy jaki musial on miec marketing zeby osiagnac status "kultowego" i "rewolucyjnego", ale zarazem jestem w stanie zrozumiec czemu ktos niezbyt osluchany muzycznie moglby sie tym zachwycic, na plejke leci utwor pod tytulem porcelain, bo akurat go kojarze z najwiekszej ilosci reklam

doing drugs in not the same as art. The artist is clearly talented however.

Beautiful, interesting, vibrant. Good creative work music, can be ambient or the main event. Techno and soul influences side by side. A new favorite.

Gran Disco

So innovative and brilliant. A stroke of genius making of the electronic next big thing in pop world. 4,5

For a "finale" album, this piece started off with a bang and the began to fizzle near the end. Not horrible, some truly good electronica soundscape stuff going on, but suffers from bloat and too much downtempo at the close.

strange but I liked it

That's a lot of music. With some really good beats. I wasn't totally into all of it, though.

Apart from the recognisable track of Porcelain, which is quite atmospheric, this album never really got out of the traps for me. Two stars for some pretty piano at times

Didn't age well

Quintessential Moby

Fantastic album. Porcelain is an iconic track.

mehhhhchno

I remember it was quite a big deal back then. Gospel samples. Electro. Listened to it a lot. Now, after 20+ years the shine has faded. Would Play be released now, I'd find it kind of mediocre.

Buen disco. Hay que escucharlo más

Not really something I'm going to listen to on purpose ever. There are some snippets of soul/blues with decent beats/samples, but all and all there isn't a lot of substance. I'll never understand people's fascination with Moby.

Whatever. Lol

<<Pitchfork reviewer Brent DiCrescenzo believed the "raw magnetism" of the sampled recordings was lost to "innate digital recording techniques", resulting in music that was "fun and functional, yet disposable.">> -- and this is pretty much my same take on this album. I accept it's a piece of late 90's music, nice for the memories, but I always found all those old blues samples a bit boring, perhaps because they're so repetitive. Three stars anyway.

The beach!!

Semibängeri. Har inte riktigt förstått genren? Typ techno/edm/what?

I know the dude’s a tool, but… I really don’t mind this album. I can put it on. It can play. It neither demands my attention nor entirely loses it. Of the electronic-based records we’ve had on this list, I’m more inclined to think I’ll remember a few of these tunes than, say, anything on that Chemical Brothers record. But, yes, I’m really just waiting for Portishead to appear and show mofos how it’s done.

I enjoyed. 4*

If I wanted loops, I would search loops on GarageBand. It’s fine, but repetitive. Not sure what the artist was trying to achieve with this album but it unfortunately is not my cup of tea

Not bad but mostly boring.

A really great album. Electronica with lots of different samples from hip hop, gospel, R&B. Really surprised me, and one of my favorites so far.

Wow, where to begin with this album....so outside of the radio tracks i've heard, this was an experience to listen to. A lot of these tracks were very repetitive, with minor changes, especially with the first few tracks. obviously it picks up a bit with tracks 5-8, which, surprise, were major hits. later in the album though, I found it to have a great flow, "Run On" was amazing, which i'm shocked I had never heard that version before, and "If Things Were Perfect" was beautiful in it's lyrics. "Everloving"....wow, was just simple, but gorgeous. Worst track of the album goes to "Machete" (man that one was hard on the ears). I would mention a best track....but man, that's tough to pick, though if i had to, it would definitely go to "Rushing" with "The Sky Is Broken" a close, close, second. I cant believe this music has been around for over twenty years before I finally got around to hearing it.....I guess you can say better late than never, but man, that was a long time I was missing out on some just amazing music.

It could potentially get 5 stars for Porcelain alone, but the album is also undeniably strong, innovative and enjoyable. Even the instrumentals like Everloving hold their own if a very long 18 track release. Fantastic.

repetitive and samey.

Nice solid energetic vibes all around, top track: South Side

Old school techno cool!

Felt like the accompaniment of an epic sci-fi action romance feature

+ Porcelain + Flower (Sally Up)

it's fine I guess some of the songs are real soothing, but the best ones just sound like budget primal scream I think the problem is that when you've heard all these songs fucking everywhere they start to sound a little generic the zeitgeist had really moved on

okay background noise

Pretty good

Simple forgettable beats

Lol college

Veel hits op dit album. Zeker voor die tijd absoluut zeer gepast. Niet alle nummers zijn geweldig.

Many nice beats

Super unique, funky sound. Liked it a lot.

I liked it. I didn't expect to...but it was fun.

Not particularly my style, but it was interesting.

While Moby is not as bad as Fatboy Slim or others like that, this just isn't my kind of music. Just feels repetitious and stale.

Not my cup of tea electro music ain’t for me it seems

The singles are absolute bangers...the other songs are pretty meh

kind of boring. songs sounded repetitive could only find b sides B side album wasn’t that good. All i could find. Found an ASAP rocky sample though

A really fun album, although Moby might've used samples from a CD stolen from his friend

Imádtam anno és most is teljes nosztalgiahullám

Absolute banger. SO many good tracks.

Sounds very 90s, not that that's a bad thing. Machete and Bodyrock used to be my jams. I wish it would pick a lane between pop/big beat and poppy ambient, though. It's uneven. Rerelease as two EPs.

Best songs: Honey, Bodyrock nice gospel hip-hop nice rock parts weak second half 6/10

Love a lot of this album!

Mobyyyyyu

Do.... do I like Moby?

Some good songs, some overplayed

Don't just watch the ads listen to them

Y2K loop music - not my thing

Really liked this. Haven't heard it in YEARS.

Too long couple of good songs

ok but repetitive

Pretty good. Features what I consider to be Moby’s biggest hits. Maybe he has more? South side is good though.

Mange fede numre. Elektronisk med blues beats. Nogle svipsere men overordnet rigtigt fedt. Føles lidt "dated"

Seminal album from a strange, strange man

What starts off as this upbeat banger central album ends on a poignant note. It's a ride, for sure. Perhaps Play really is the best title for it, because its encompassing all the stages of play. The hype at the beginning, to the somberness at the end.

Surprisingly high hit value.

I love everything about the story of this record, from Moby thinking it was going to be his last work before he had to get a real job to the fact that it took months to catch on. It's just bangers front to back. Best track: Porcelain.

Overlong, but decent LP. The hits are still good. Why Does My Heart and Machete are overlooked. The back half of the album is a downbeat EP in itself - really good. 3.5 stars, rounded up.

Moby's Play during Lent seems like an appropriate listen for a few reasons. Off the bat, there's the nearly-too-obvious veganism, which I argue is fair to bring up due to its prominence in the packaging. Then there's the blend of melancholy with heavily sampled dance music, which over the course of an hour loses most of its power to invite dance. That last part is my perception this time, at least, which makes me uncertain about rating the thing. One part of me agrees that the album is a classic: The blend of sampled music and sadness into dance tracks is adept and unique. On the other hand, the concept wears thin quickly, leaving the melodies, which are catchy but fail to inspire beyond that. The last few cuts are especially flat in context, but taking too much context into account brings me close to review-as-reaction-to-popularity. There's something very good about Play, but I don't like it very much. That's something I don't think about music very often.

First two third sounds like a commercial, final is just bland. At least he made that money tho (a fact that will never sit well with me when the artists he sampled surely did not).

Liked it for a dance album. Just not my thing.

just elevator music - it's the sort of thing people who "don't really do music" would have playing at a party. 2/10
