So many drugs. They look like the Manson family. They sing like its the fucking middle ages. Horrendous nonsense. 1/5
The man's a genius. Probably a bell end too. The mix of styles here is breathtaking. Pop hits, Street anthems and vulnerable moments all mixed with humor and a good range of subject matter. Its one of the best hip hop albums of all time. 5/5
2001 was mega wasn't it? A whole world of possibilities for a 16/17 year old me who's just discovered that pubs (remember them?) would serve him and some particularly unfussy girls would go out with him. One of the best album covers of all time, one of the coolest bands of all time released this. The album itself is perfect. I wanted to be them but somehow failed to pull off the skinny jean, leather jacket, stoner look. I would pick out highlights; but I adore every song for different reasons. If you pushed me "Someday" is probably my favorite. Fun Fact- At a fundraiser recently for Bernie Sanders The strokes fans had gone past the curfew time and the fans rushed the stage durign the last song "New York City Cops". The Front man, Julian Casablancas, turns around and bumps into huge cop trying to control the situation just as hes singing 'they ain't too smart!' Chaos ensued (plenty of videos on youtube). Anyway This is the best album of the noughties, hand down, and I'll fight anyone who says otherwise! I'd give this 6 if i could. Easiest 5/5 ever.
Its a shit film by word what an album (or soundtrack). The cover is horrendous. But the Music is glorious and the album flows between frenzied synth driven Lets go crazy through the eclectic fantasy of Darling Nikki all the way to the greatest closer of all time; the masterful Purple Rain, all which instantly became iconic. To this day the greatest live performer I've ever seen. Unbelievably he actually has a better album then this (Sign O'the Times) but this is a masterpiece in itself from one of the most complex song writing geniuses of his time. 5/5
Boring first two tracks. Then two absolutely great tunes (which I think are new to me!). Helpless is right in my wheel arch! Love it! Deja Vu was dull. Two more classics in Our house (which I had heard before and 4 + 20. Love both of them. Fucking hell. Country girl is hurting my ears. too many drugs lads. The last track had potential but there is way too much going on. Like the rock voice guy agreeing with everything but hate the rest. 3/5 as the good tracks are really good!
I mean I hate Radiohead as much as the next man. But this was done well before they disappeared up their own arses and its a class apart isn't it? The first five songs alone are one of the best run of 5 songs back to back on any album I can think of. (Nice Dream) is a bit of a nothing track which is a shame. Just is one of the best Radiohead songs. So is My iron Lung. Both stone cold classics. The rest of the album is flawless and Street Spirit is a wonderful closer. Fuck. I wanted to hate this! Do I forgive it one forgettable track and give it a 5 or is it a 4? Its a 4 isn't it.

First Album we've had that I've not aware of at all. Here goes nothing... Initial thoughts were its not awful but not instant either, maybe lacking hooks, singer is strong with a Jaggeresque twang. Things significantly pick up after a couple tracks with Friction which is a proper punk banger. They are little like a grown up Ramones with something more interesting to say. Guitars on this are mostly great although some of the tracks start to get a little prog rock which is upsetting. If you judge this album by today's standards its probably a 3. But in 1977 this would have been mind blowing for people, especially considering the amount of drugs they took back then. I suspect this would have been a massively influential album and inspired a lot of indie rock to come. 3/5 for the album as we find it today (fair bit of filler). But its a high 3 and probably deserves a 4 for influence alone. An Interesting Album and I've already downloaded it as think it will benefit from a few more listens.
I instantly hated her voice. Its an octave too high. Like someone scraping nails down a blackboard. Songwriting seems decent for the time though. Although there are almost too many lyrics. Everything is overly described and I'm struggling to give a shit. Sorry Joni. Asked my Mum about this and apparently its an all time classic!? Hmm...For Fucking Dogs maybe?
Wow bit of a change of up- I mean who doesn't love afro-cuban Jazz? Like backgorund music from a hipster restaurant in Shoreditch. I'm a fan of Jazz music in the main and also don't mind some Cuban salsa music. Not too sure I like the two combined but its decent enough background music pottering around the Flat on Saturday morning. And at least its not Joni Mitchell.
Hippy drug addled nonsense.
For a band with such an immensely huge back catalog the Stones only ever managed to string together 5 decent albums (Beggars, Let it Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Exile and Some Girls). Granted that is 5 more than most bands manage but the Stones have had 30 studio albums so its not a great strike rate. This the first time they managed it and was a real coming of age. Its not perfect but I don't want The Stones to be perfect- It'd ruin them. The thing I love most about the stones is the filler tracks. The bits in between the hits that the stones do so well. You see it in their live shows and you see it on the their best albums. There are no skips. The Beatles Highs are probably higher than the Rolling stones. But their lows are absolute dogshit. The Stones remain consistently listenable through all their albums. Also they're the greatest Rock N' Roll band ever so they can't get less than a 4. Even if its not my favourite. They're also immortal which is impressive considering the excess. Highlights: Street Fighting Man, Stray Cat Blues. Solid 4/5.
One of those albums that I'm supposed to like (a man of such discerning musical taste!) but have never got into. Some decent tracks but the amount of reverb always gives the feel of style over substance, but its interesting enough to keep my attention. Never been that keen on the vocal on some of the tracks. Having said that a solid and probably quite influential album. Highlights: Teenage Riot, Hey Joni, Kissability
Two Days in a row? Must be about 1001 to 2 chance! This album isn't as good and I wasn't the biggest fan of that other one to be honest. Better than Joni Mitchell though. 2/5
My sort of roots based county, blues rock n roll music. Can listen to this sort of thing forever. Probably the first album we've had that i didn't already know (other than Bad moon rising) which i love. Highlights: Wrote a song for everyone, Lodi 4/5
My Kryptonite. Whilst I have enjoyed individual tracks of Dylan's, i have never truly enjoyed an album in full, so this was mostly new to me. The Songwriting is exceptional. Lyrics verging on genius. Yet most of this album doesn't hit home for me. I can appreciate the songs but for me there aren't enough hooks to keep me interested and 52 minutes of more a less the same song makes me a little bored. Actually preferred the album he released last year which was far more interesting. Highlights: Meet me in the Morning, Shelter from the storm 3/5
This didn't need to be 56 minutes long
Loved this. Proper spoken word story telling. Great songwriting, emotive delivery from someone I only got into after he died. 4/5
Possibly due to his more Electric sound, this has always been my favorite Dylan Album. Also "Like a Rolling Stone" is one of the greatest songs ever written too. Loses a point for the last track taking up a 1/5 of the time on the album 4/5
Anyone who has been unfortunate enough to live with me knows I bloody love Country music. Not the pandering nonsense of your Keith Urbans singing about fucking tractors when hes never driven one in his life but your great songwriters and performers like Dolly Parton, Kris Kristoffersen, and Johnny Cash. I'm aware of Loretta Lynn but had never really listened to an album. Luckily Loretta falls into the latter category. A nice collection of well written country songs. Unfortunately not by her- Dolly she ain't, but she sings them well enough. Not the best of its genre and doesn't do anything for me to stand out from the crowd. Highlight: The Devil gets his dues, I Got Caught 3/5
I find this all a bit souless and dull to be honest. Also do we need a 22 minute opening track? Complete lack of love and sounds like the soundtrack to a shite arthouse movie. Good cover tbf. 1/5
Blimey. Why have I never listened to a Stranglers Album before. Love this. Raw. Not overly polished. Proper attitude, nous and musicianship. Bit long but 4/5
Not listened to this for a while! The album to convert indie kids to dance music. I can see why as they blend indie rock attitude with clattering dance beats all with added humor. Along with The Avalanches (who fully converted me to the merits of sampling) LCD sound system are the best of their genre and this is a pretty great album by a hugely talented band. All my friends is an absolute masterpiece but its the dance music parts i struggle with a bit, the repetitive beats 'over and over again' and it becomes dull. I was almost converted. I like it but I don't love it adn probably never will. Unless anyone's got some pills... 3/5
Nowhere near as good as people think it is. 3 or 4 decent songs the rest is filler. A bang average R&B album.
During lockdown 1- the underrated original. I watched a brilliant documentary about Miles Davis and the cool. Following that I listened to a lot of Jazz. Not this though. This must have been a huge step forward for Jazz. A more modern sound that takes from the innovators in the 40s and 50s and builds on them rather than imitates. Who knew organ led Jazz would work so well? Only Jimmy, his Dog and his Chicken. Extra point for that album cover. Plenty going on there. 4/5
The color grey, Paint drying, Steve Davis, train spotting. Just some of the things more interesting and inspiring than the Doves.
For live albums to work they have to be great performances. Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison, Elvis comeback special no.1440, something like that. This is decent without me really ever paying close attention. I also for some reason felt like James Brown had a bit of Jimmy Saville about him. Everything about this album is good without being great. The Voice, The tunes, the music. All good. The crowd noise sounds like they put it on afterwards. I'm not having it people screamed and clapped like that. Maybe this gets a 3 as i feel bad about calling him a nonce and "I Don't Mind" is a magnificent song!
I fucking love this album so much. So much so I need to swear to emphasize the deepness of my love for it. You've probably heard half the songs from BBC montages in the past but not even they could ruin this album. Every song fits perfectly and flows to the next perfectly. Yes they are all weird arty canadians but wow. I think this might have been the first proper indie album I ever truly loved. And there's nothing like your first love. 5/5
Love the first two tracks. Bit weird after that
Not sure what to make of this. No idea on the lyrics (for obviously reasons) and the songs seems a bit overly complexed with a lot going on.
I'm not sure why but was expecting this to be...well, more Scandinavian! Having said that with the exception of the over use of an accordion on the first song, its quite good. Beatle-esque. Solid 3/5 Extra point as in the 2nd half of this album it really ups its game 4/5
What to do with a problem like Michael Jackson. On one had the big songs on this album are timeless classics. On the other hand he's quite possibly singing them about children he's molested. The songs are great but I can't truly enjoy them anymore. 3/5 Is it possible to remove one from the other?
Its not my Genre. Lyrically its enjoyable enough but there isn't much to make this stand out from the crowd and I am immensely bored by half way through 2/5
Dull. So Dull I can't be bothered to write a review. If you want a band who use samples well, listen to the Avalanches. 2/5
Timeless. Not a bad track on it. Have added to my library. Take a point off for singing other peoples songs but other than that love his voice and the vibe of the thing. More of this. 4/5
Dull.
I have never listened to a T.Rex Album in full. Find it a bit ploddy. Not enough hooks and missing any of the hits. 2/5 as you can hear riffs that bands since have ripped off. But massively disappointing.
I stand by what i said about the Beatles when we reviewed the Rolling Stones. The amazing highs here (Back in the USSR, While my Guitar, Blackbird, Helter Skelter) are soaring and better than anything the Stones ever did. Most of the album tracks wouldn't have made a stones b-side and are well below average. Some of the album tracks however are majestic (Yer Blues, honey pie, Rocky Raccoon). Did this need to be a double album and 30 songs long? No. There's a perfect 11 or 12 song album in there somewhere- its just a little bloated. Was it a massive step forward for rock n roll music globally? Absolutely. Did I enjoy listening for the first time since my post Oasis beatles phase in the early noughties? Of course I did. The lows are too low for a 5. but lets remember the highs! 4/5
If this was anymore middle of the road there'd be white lines down the middle of the album. Having said that, the storytelling is decent and the melodies are occasionally quite catchy. The full orchestra adds something and makes it a little less boring. His voice is shit though and that has always annoyed me. Hipstery friends can never understand why I don't like these. Its because they are fundamentally dull. 2/5
Finally after 39 long albums Dickie gets his Trance/Rave album! And not just any Rave album. Its the lads that defined the fucking genre at its peak. This was so important they now have an area of Glastonbury named after them and both the chemical brothers and the prodigy (although the latter clearly weren't listening very hard) were influenced by them. I've never listened to the whole thing before and have some new headphones coming this afternoon. So will strap myself in, take some pills (paracetamol or rennie) and get my rave on! Unlike most of this genre- this has love, heart, and a purpose. It holds my attention throughout and is actually fucking interesting which is a major feat for dance music which is usually... well.... boring. Also that is some Album cover. I might buy it just so I can put it up my wall! Actually having checked the price of one of the most rare vinyls in music, maybe I won't. Highlights: 21st Century Poem & Storm 3000 4/5
Leonard does the 80s. Cohen is a poet first musician 2nd and throughout this is lyrically fascinating but the most impressive slight of hand he performs here is producing an album that is both unmistakably him but also pure 80s. Maybe I need a few listens to dampen my enthusiasm but having only really known Cohen's big hits like Marianne, Suzanne and Hallelujah, I have been a little blown away by the two albums of his this group has thrown up. Its clear how hes influenced other artists I love, particularly Nick Cave. The man was a Genius. Truly the Godfather of gloom. Highlights: Everybody Knows, Tower Song. 4/5 but close to my 3rd 5.
You can smell the monster energy drink sweating out of every pour of this album. Its not the worse of its genre as there are elements of an actual fucking tune on each track. Not my genre. Can't really mark in fairly. I like the cover so extra point for that. 2/5
I love Nick Cave. But I have always struggled with the first half of this double album. I love the 2nd half. But the 1st half does have my beautiful world on which is majestic tune. 4/5 mainly as the man’s a genius.
A Hip Hop album that has imagination, heart, great samples and 13 tracks its impossible not to appreciate. Every drum beat, every chord meticulously crafted by an absolute fucking mentalist. This is how you do it lads. Genre spanning wizardry. Highlights- the whole fucking thing. 5/5
U2's last Hurrah. Its alright and has some catchy songs but all the edge and heart is gone from music making it a bunch of average songs pandering to their fans. I got to the end of wild honey and looked at the names of tracks left and turned it off. Peace on Earth? no thanks Bono you insufferable prick, pay your fucking taxes. Music for people who hate music. 2/5
This was fucking everywhere for a couple of years at the start of the millennium but don't think I've ever listened to it all the way through. Remember the singles and love the first 4 tracks. Porcelain being the undoubted highlight. After that its all new but its a great listen. Think my distrust of dance music must be the reason i ignored it at the time but this is very good. Maybe a few tracks too long but a solid 4/5.
c'était de la merde
What is it? Is it Jazz, Blues, Rock? To be honest I'm just glad its not industrial french shite. There is a hint of showing off here but i'll let that pass. Nice music to work by. would have liked some lyrics but its a step back in the right direction! 3/5
dull- only stand out song written by Prince and even he was happy to give that away.
bog standard hip hop. Nothing special going on here.
Songs are pleasant enough but it just sort of floats along in the background and never really grabbed my attention. Stoner music.
Enjoyed this alot more than I expected.
Liked this but it is exactly the sort of thing I listen to. Country based roots folk music done really bloody well. Songs tell a story. Guitar hooks are great. If your not a fan of this Genre however, eI don't think you'll find too much special about it and it doesn't stand out hugely from quite a crowded field. but it is decent... and gets better throughout the album. Lookout Joe is probably my fave track and expect it'll be Bjorns too! 3/5 Just not special enough for a 4 or a 5.
The worst man who’s music I will love forever. Not his smiths best but still very decent and one of his best solo efforts. 4/5
I quite like the Pixies. But this is one of the worst things I’ve ever heard. 1/5
Never got the Prodigy but can appreciate the hooks. After a strong start the 2nd half tails off a bit
One of the great songwriters with possibly his finest album. Musically it’s somewhere between Elton John and the Beatles and that suits my own taste just fine. Only the good die young is one of my favourite songs ever. 4/5
Probably the most Gorgeous album from Nick Cave. Most of the songs could have been a single. Wonderful Sunday morning listening. Only Criticism is it’s a little one paced and maybe a touch long. 4/5
To begin with I was a little bored with the first two tracks but then Ballad of do nothing and Between the bars caught my attention. Its downbeat of course it is, eventually Elliot Smith committed suicide! But Lyrically the songs are insanely good and perfectly captured my mood on the first Monday back after a week off work! 5/5 lyrically. 3/5 for the production and mono toned singing. 4/5 overall
I've never sat down and listened to this in full before. I'm aware its bang up there on most all time great list, so am looking forward to this.... This doesn't sound like an album from 1968. Clean, crisp production held together by a soaring soulful voice. Each song take you to a different place but fit together perfectly. There is no standout song as such, but the whole thing (its a proper album) is magnificent as a whole piece of work. This is going to get played to death by me from now on. Comfortably the best album we've heard so far in JLAC. 5/5
First up, That is a top top album cover. Everyone who has working hearing will instantly know the first track. Its an all time classic tune and worth a couple of stars by itself. But what of the other 7 songs (can it really be classed as an album with just 7, granted quite long samey disco tracks?). Its obviously very influential and impossible not to tap your feet to but what i'm hearing is good times + lots of less good versions of good times. There is also the fucking awful Will you cry which led to me reaching for the skip button. Music to dance to but like most dance music it lacks any sort of depth. 1 point for the cover and 2 points for Good Times. 3/5
Alot going on with that cover. Enjoyed the guitars but thought the songs lacked hooks and melodies. For someone so legendary i was left a little dissapointed. 2/5
MOZZA!! He's such a prick. I can't emphasise that enough. But this is a great album both lyrically and muscially. Its still not as good as the Smiths though. 4/5
Unlistenable. Just awful. Music for uncool dads trying to prove they didn’t bit brexit, even though they did. 1/5
Thought I’d hate this as the lead singer is a bit of a nob but was pleasantly surprised. Like the hooks. Rapping was pretty decent. A surprisingly 3/5
Most songs have no noticeable structure, and all adopt that irritating "dream-sound"; a repetitive, unnatural, synthesized sound that goes throughout the track. I admit, I can see the musical promise in songs like "My Girls" and "Guys Eyes", but these songs sound like they have no cohesive direction to hold them together. I usually like original and I usually like different, but those two qualities alone don't make a song good and this allbum is the perfect example of that. 2/5
When I was at school if you liked guitar music you were either into Britpop, Grunge, or Metal. The kids of Wyvern weren't having people crossing over and liking different Genres. I had quite a happy childhood so I joined the former bandwagon. Now as a miserable 30 something I can appreciate Nirvana a lot more. I still have no time for metal though. Stripped back these songs actually sound better which is a testamant to the song writing on show. What you are hearing here is a superstar at the absolute peak of his powers. One of, if not the best live album ever made featuring the greatest cover version of all time in Man who sold the world. 5/5
Other than fly away I've not really listened to much Kravitz. First up he sounds a bit like Prince when hes singing. Thats where that comparison ends though as the songs are weak and try to get by on elongated guitar and sax solos. Its basically a more modern version of that Jimi Hendrix album I hated. 2/5
Never heard of this. Never want to hear of this again. Bang average hip hop 2/5
Yawn 🥱. Not enough killer plenty of filler, especially in the first half of the album. Each song has a 2 minute intro which is about a minute too long. It gave birth to prog rock which is frankly unforgivable. The bands best songs (other than money) are on their other less ejaculated over albums. Some nice guitar solos, but I will always be a wish you were here guy. “Money”, “Us and them” and “Brain Damage” lift it up to a 3. And after your 1 for the strokes, Dickie, that’s more than you deserve. I always think for truly great albums you want to relisten Immediately after finishing. I don’t get that with this one. 3/5
Dear god. Like a female Bryan adams where a two year old has written the lyrics. Basic not partically good Americana
As important as this may have been it’s not aged well. The songs are basic but I get the impression they are decent musicians pretending to be bad ones. Unlike their punk peers they don’t have much to say. 2/5
To begin with found this a little all over the place but as the album progresses- I think i'm starting to get it. 2nd time through its making more sense and is actually quite interesting if not my usual thing. Enjoyable without being something i'll rush back to. 3/5
Starts off great. Really decent poppy indie dance. Will give them the benefit of the doubt and presume they are french and not just pretentious. Tails off a little at the beginning of the second half then comes back strong with the title track, then goes a little electronic for my taste. Not an unpleasant listen but probably not something I'd seek out again. 3/5
This is great isn't it? Floats along effortlessly driven by one of the voices of any generation. Jazzier than I was expecting which is a good thing. Great morning listening. maybe gets a little samey in the second half, would prefer a few more etta jamesy upbeat songs. 3/5
We've had the greatest live album ever from Nirvana but this is bang there with it. Cash is at his best live. And when he combines that with doing this sorta outlaw country stuff he's peerless. Its fucking brilliant and I'm gonna have to bring out the 5 again. A superstar at the top of his game. 5/5
God this was dull.
Fuck me. This guy is considered a genius?! I find this mostly un-listenable. Its like the Beatles had a breakdown. One of the worst to dates. 1/5
MODs. Arseholes with bowl haircuts who think they are trendy with a side of racism? As you can tell I approach this one with an open mind. Unfortunately despite my preconceptions its actually ok. Have always found Paul Weller a bit hit and miss and this follows that pattern. Not many of the songs could be singles though and it lacks hooks in the album tracks, but when it hits it hits hard and hardest with That's Entertainment and Start (how is this not the opener of the album?!). Decent enough without ever being remarkable. 3/5
Enjoyed the Rockier side of this but the Psychedelic side (and more prevalent) of things not really to my taste. No unpleasant but not something I'll likely listen to again. Cowboy Movie the highlight for me. 2/5
I often like spoken word music. the music here is pretty decent but obviously I have no clue whats being said which is pretty key when there's no singing. The cover is pretty cool but its tough to be 100% sure of Melody's age. If we trust the french (and we definitely shouldn't) not to be singing about something dodgy, this is decent background music, and if I spoke french i'd probably get more out of this. So its the first one where its my fault i don't like it. 2/5 overall. 3/5 for the song where Melody just laughs throughout it.
Didn't really know this chap previously. Its a notch above you standard singer songwriter type stuff as the music is more layered. He's not the greatest singer but it sort of works. Maybe lacking a few hooks for my tastes, but its nice. 3/5
When everyone else in the 90s were doing britpop (this was released the same day as definitely maybe) the Manics relocated to Cardiff to make one of the decade’s most remarkable and outlying rock records. I get this won’t be for everyone but I will always love it and have enjoyed blasting it out from the kitchen this morning whilst Humby is hungover 😂. The Holy Bible is full of anguish, unshrinking and unromantic in its abyss-edge study of death, fascism, self-harm, and man’s capacity for atrocity. Maybe you could argue it’s a couple of tracks too long but for me we’re hearing one of the era’s most underrated bands with their best record. 4/5
Little Richard helped shape rock ’n’ roll into everything it is today, but sometimes we find that fact difficult to contemplate. After all, it's hard to think about anything at all when we're busy wearing a hole in the carpet to the sound of vintage, rip-roaring cuts like "Tutti Frutti", "Slippin' and Slidin'" and "Rip It Up". The raw energy of his raspy howl and his way with the 88s are utterly electrifying—and just as irresistible today as they were more than half a century ago. The most important album we’ve had so far. Without it we wouldn’t have much of the music we have today. 5/5
Outside of the hits is there anything more here from every 9 years old boy's favorite sleep over buddy? Not really. The non singles are bang average. On Girlfriend his hearts not in it for some reason... 2/5 just for the two hits. Prefer his rockier later stuff because as we all know disco sucks.
Hate is strong word. I fucking hated this. No melodies. Shit electronica just for the sake of it. If i never heard this again it would be too soon. 1/5 P.S- Fuck the super league.
Love this. Get that his style of Bluesy jazz won't be for everyone but its the sort of album you can get lost in. The story telling, the song writing and the delivery is pretty much perfect. Waits brings the dive bars and the gutters to life, even makes them appealing at times. My only gripe is the fading out of songs and the instrumental track which wasn't needed. Great stuff from a genuine artist. 4/5
Don't think I've ever listened to a Stevie Wonder Album. Looks like hes drawn the album cover on this one. Certainly a nice voice rooted in gospel singing. As most of you know i uncomfortable with all things church/Religion based so not keen on some of the subject matter. When he steers clear of that the voice carries the songs nicely and its pleasant rather than groundbreaking. The second half of the album is much better than the first half. Probably didn't need to be a double album here. But good none the less, without ever really being great. 3/5
12 year old me had a huge crush on Nina out of the Cardigans. Having said that I only know the brilliant Lovefool from this album, so was excited for this. Sadly it’s mostly filled with quite average 90s pop songs. Her voice is undeniably sexy and carries a lot of it but this album has no place on a list of 1001 great albums. 2/5 and that’s almost entirely for lovefool and the singer being hot.
Sounds like music you play in an 80s movie when the Soviet’s are up to no good. Interesting if not really my thing. Enjoyed the queen cover. 2/5
Nothing much to this. Trying to be highbrow but ends up being dull. 1/5
Caught me in the right mood for this sorta thing this morning. Hugely Hipster, layered indie instrumental. Decent without being something I'd choose to listen to. At points through this i had to check my speakers weren't broken though so loses a point for that. 2/5
About bloody time. The final studio album from the greatest band of the 80s. The marriage of Marr's riffs and Morrissey's lyrics here are some of their best. Its probably my second favorite Smiths album after queen is dead. But there was a happiness when it popped up this morning that only a truly great album can give you. No Skips on this one. Maybe it could be argued that the last two tracks aren't quite up with the soaring heights of the rest of the album but its getting a 5 anyway from me. 5/5
JLAC giveth with the Smiths. JLAC taketh away with hip hop. Its alright. Very of its time- like an edgy Will Smith. Some interesting samples and lyrics but i wasn't blown away by it. 2/5
Stuck this on whilst having a cup of tea and some breakfast this morning. I imagine that is how boards of canada intended it to be listened to. I struggle with this hipster end of the dance/electronic spectrum. I just don't get when you'd listen to it and what you'd get out of it. Souless, Joyless, outright boring music. On one fucking track some women just starts counting. edgy. 1/5
Other than Ace of spades never really listened to much Motorhead. Mainly as its Metal and I have generally found that that genre is associated with people with poor personal hygiene. Ace of Spades is the obvious standout but this is album more rock then metal for me. And that is an excellent thing. Guitars are load and prominent, Vocal works if a bit one dimensional and the rest of the songs on the album are decent without being exceptional and lack the ferocity of Ace of spades. Enjoyed it though. An en-lighting experience and if we're being honest we'd all like to pull off that leather jacket hat combo on the cover. 3/5
Some of it was ok but no idea how the hell this made it on onto any greatest album list 🤷🏼♂️
The Beatles final album. Abbey Road uses a "less is more" approach to production throughout, giving "Come Together" a controlled intensity while the raw sound of Paul's voice on "Oh! Darling" is one of the album's highlights. The sound of a whole band working together flawlessly is heard through this. One of their most consistent albums. 5/5
Its ok but not interesting enough to get away with no Lyrics. 2/5
Liking the mostly Latin flavor to this. This sounds a lot more modern than 1967 and reminds me of lots of artists who came after this so was clearly an influential record. My only gripe is when it wanders off in a psychedelic direction which i think makes it lose some of its energy and drive which is there for most of the album in spades. A surprisingly great rock record that I have only just heard for the first time. 4/5
An Iconic album that lives up to the hype. Its very much classic rock rather than the metal that it sometimes gets shoehorned in with. Maybe tails off a little in the 2nd half but has some classic rock riffs throughout. 4/5
Jeez there are a lot of albums from 1969. Luckily this is a goodun. Neil manages to avoid his annoying squeaky traits and just writes solid folk rock songs. Cinnamon girl and down by the river are stone cold classics too. 4/5
First up. Piece of my heart is bloody majestic. have always love it. love this (presumably first) version. The rest of the album is great fun without ever reaching the glorious heights of the song it was built around. 4/5 mostly for Piece of my heart.
When no one was making this sort of music, the black crowes released this absolute banger. High octane rock n roll from start to finish. lovely stuff. Not sure its quite strong enough throughout to give it a 5 but certainly a solid 4/5
Too much filler not enough Killer. Teengage kicks is obviously a worldy but the rest is pretty average. 2/5
Nice enough in parts (Beatlesey) but fuck me its long. Just as you think its getting going there is a bad track. Saving Grace, Black Maria, and Wolfman Jack are my highlights but there is just way too much filler. Could probably have made a decent 40 min album A generous 3/5 for the bits i liked, especially the 2nd half.
I kinda like this ( possibly because it reminds me of Nick Cave in places). Which is weird. As its quite electronic and I don't usually like that. It doesn't really have any catchy hooks which i usually need. But I found myself enjoying it without loving it. 3/5
Quite like this. It’s like a more interesting daft punk. 3/5
I actually like quite a bit of their later stuff but this is like a really bad Joy Division without any hint of a hook or melody. The whole thing made me a little anxious! 1/5
Delightful Punk pop from one of acts that defined the genre. Starts strong, definitely drops off a little and then picks right back from track 9 onward. 4/5 as the good bits are bloody great.
Can see how its influential Alt Indie rock but it took me a couple of listens to start to get it. A real grower that I get more out of the more i play it. Given its release date this must have been one of the first crossover records from the Alt-Rock scene which exploded in the early 90s. 4/5
The King of the Blues. At his sublime best. No misses here, only hits. Cracking recording considering its from 1964. One of the most captivating live recordings I've listened to in any genre. The mans was a force of nature, Powerful, passionate and perfect. 5/5
A pretty average album (couple of decent album tracks) with 1 magnificent single on it in "Another Girl, Another Planet" which actually seems pretty out of place on the rest of the album. Basically seems like the person making this list liked that one song so stuck the album on. 2/5 for an average album overall.
Never got this. Never sure I will. Seems to lack in hooks and memorable moments. 2/5
Nothing to this. Sound dated and boring
This was a surprise! bloody loved it- sounds like it was recorded yesterday rather than 50 years ago! Guess I haven't heard it before as Bjorno said they self destructed not long after putting this out. Seems to have influenced so much of the music I love. Prince, Primal Scream and Alabama 3 have borrowed a fair bit of this. A great record in in own right and will be getting plenty of future listens from me. 4/5
First of all hugely confusing but great cover! Need to try and rate this on its own merit, rather than against the glory that was purple rain. It has its moments (couple of decent rock songs and "if it takes all night" is great) but then goes off in german at which point i began to struggle. Brought it back a bit with "a really good time" & "Praire rose". But more that i don't like then i do here. 2/5
Enjoyed this. Its like an Autobiography. the sons are intensely personal. delivered in a funky style of later Prince (especially on "junie". It has moments of intensity "Weary" and also vulnerability on "where do we go". Its a great album. Just a little sad as its mostly about being black in america. 4/5
Quite enjoyed this without relating to a single word of it. White Privilege FTW.
Jesus christ Jon Lydon is a fucking weapon. 1/5
A load of samples expertly put together to bore you to death on a Wednesday morning. 2/5
Its the more metally side of grunge (for me) and was a few years before i really gave a shit about music but I enjoyed this album. Some great guitars and decent tunes on this. 4/5
Whilst I knew and loved their albums; "Head on the door", "Disintegration" and "Pornography", I don't think I've ever listened to this. Its a lot more indie than the aforementioned works. you can kinda tell they are heading for greatness ("a forest is sensational"), but in this they haven't quite arrived yet. 3/5
Nice enough but hes not a favorite of mine and this goes on forever. 3/5
Aerosmith are like vampires. Released their first album in 1973 and look more or less the same today. always thought of them as more of singles band but this is great. Guitar led rock music with one of the great front men. There is a bit of filler on here and most of the album tracks sound exactly the same but enjoyable none the less and the big songs are sublime . 3/5
Decent if mostly unremarkable Punk rock with a hint of blues. 2/5
Well this was a pleasant bloody surprise this Wednesday morning. Borrows hugely from the best bits of the Beatles. Grand, Flawlessly produced, and timelessly catchy. Its 5 or 6 tracks too long which is a shame as there is an absolute masterpiece 11 or 12 song album in there somewhere. 4/5
So many drugs. They look like the Manson family. They sing like its the fucking middle ages. Horrendous nonsense. 1/5
Enjoyed this. A lot simpler than his later work and it benefits because of it. Suzanne and So long Marianne are stone cold classics. Poetic rather than melodic but that his style and it works. 4/5
Don't think I've ever listened to a Tori Amos record. Listening to it, I don't think its aimed at a man in his 30s. or men in general. The theme here seems to be about women's struggles. Songs are okish without any real hooks. 2/5
Nice enough to listen to whilst working from home. Nothing made me really sit up and take notice. Its Nice and nothing more. 3/5
The album that spurned a million shite British R&B groups. I'm looking at you Eternal. And you The Honeyz. Despite the above issue which isn't really their fault this is actually a pretty decent album. Its far too long but the good tracks are bangers. Extra point for a Prince cover. 3/5
Well this is bat shit mental. But I quite like it! You can hear how this influenced bands that came later like the Ramones and the Beastie Boys. Rock n Roll punk with something to say. Its also pretty funny in places. Majestically mad. 4/5
Not many debut albums have the consistency Ian Brown et al achieved with this. There are 8 absolute classic songs on here. But I've never thought the run of Don't Stop and Elizabeth my dear are good enough and most people just skip past them to the majestic sugar spun sister. This is a shame considering they left Love Spreads and Sally Cinnamon off this. The version I have been given by apple music has Love spreads on which I don't recall being on this. Further checks to the back of my original album version confirm this. All things considered though a classic album if not a perfect one. P.S- Ian Brown can't perform live and is an anti vax nob. 4/5
Where's the book Pete? Apart from "I can see for Miles" and "the Last Time" found this distinctly average. They were capable of so much better than this. And still no one has seen that book that Pete Townsend was doing research for... 2/5
Dull indie that doesn't really go anywhere. A couple of decent tracks save it from a 1 but pretty forgettable. 2/5
Yay. A Hip-Hop album. Bet Bjorno is excitied!? Starts off slowly and its only when "the Bitchez" comes on i start to pay attention (absoloute Jam BTW!). Everything after that is a level above what came before. Especially liked "Jungle Music" and "Ain't the Devil Happy". 3/5 Mainly for the 2nd half of the album.
Have always enjoyed the odd lep Zep album without ever getting into them fully and never really understood the legend. Liked all of this without ever really loving any of it. 3 or 4/5 not decided yet.
No idea what this about but its a bloody Jam!
Its the most pretentious thing I've heard. Elements are interesting but fucking hell most of it dull and without redeeming features. A generous 2/5
Before they sold out these lads were actually capable of stuff like this. 4/5
Genuinely impressive that someone can produce something of such limited musical and artistic merit. Everything that is bad about the metal genre (which can be great) is here. Repetitive riffs, pretending to worship Satan, and lyrics about the struggle of a little white man. Imagining the lack of personal hygiene in the crowd is enough to steer well clear until the end of days. 1/5
Like a Queen had a breakdown, watched the Rocky horror picture show and wrote some interesting music afterward. Not always to my taste but a unique interesting listen. 3/5
I love so many songs on this album. Yet struggle with it as an album as it has so many week tracks. First for songs are brilliant, next 4 average to bad, "To the end" and "This is a low" are wonderful songs but the bits in between just don't live up to the hype. Tough to rate this due to the disparity between the good and bad. 3/5
2 Van Halen albums in 3 days. Wow. Their first, and in my opinion less like-able. A couple of tracks were not bad but this isn't for me. If you must make this sort of mindless no depth music at least make it catchy, fun and have some hooks. Thats missing here. Sounds like a parody of everything they think a rock band should be. 2/5
I hope no one charged them too much for designing that cover. Not great Lyricists and I like a good lyric. Tunes are catchy enough, but only the 2 hits stand out. Not a great album but its good and they are a great live band. 3/5
It was a nice enough R&B album without ever really having a wow moment. Its way too long too like a lot of albums from Genre. 3/5
Hungover me enjoyed this immensely. well produced and delivery is on point. 4/5
Great stuff this. The birth of Funk right here, mixed in with some Psych-rock guitars and bold baselines. Will be exploring more. 4/5
Quite liked most of it without ever really loving any of it.
Genius, Become successful doing glam rock. Then completely change the style and genre. And knock it out the park again. Album flows magnificently. Songs are all on point. Bowie did this in 1975 influenced by funk. Everyone else followed in the 80s. Peerless 5/5
Top Top cover. Shit Irish band trying to copy a shit American band. Like it when my punk bands have a bit more to say then this. 2/5
Getting Strong Kasabian vibes from this which isn't a bad thing at all. Also reminds me of a more indie prodigy. Didn't hate it. Liked a fair bit of it. Got bored with quite a lot of it (the dancier bits). A surprising 3/5
Is that supposed to be the devil on the front? Oh do fuck off. And buy some fucking deodorant whilst your at it. 1/5
In 2004 when they released this no one else was doing this sort of crisp sharp art rock. So unlike a lot of the Indie landfill released around the time this record still feels like a breath of Fresh air. "Take me out" thrills whilst "Michael" makes you smile, and throughout its impossible not to move your feet. 4/5
This is a good rock album. which is a shame as shes a horrendous person. Its feminist content is way ahead of its time and has catchy hooks.
Nice enough without anything really standing out and making me want to listen again.
Liked this. A lot f my favorite bans clearly influenced by these.
The answer to the question; what on earth is that noise on the radio? is usually the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. So this is their classic album?! I just don't get it and probably never will. Under the Bridge is a nice tune but the rapping/singing style makes me want to bang my head against a wall to make it stop. Its just not good. Or of any merit. 1/5
There are only 3 decent songs on this. The rest is bang average 80s bloke rock. the good songs are good though. 2/5
Sprawling and Epic and in my opinion far superior to the hugely overrated "Dark side..". Written as a tribute to Syd Barrett it holds the attention and is moving throughout. Is it a bit over the top and overly produced with not enough songs? Probably. Am I going to deduct a point due to the prevalence of Prog rock in the non singles? Of course I am. But its a genuine classic none the less. 4/5
Classic Americana. Springsteenesque. Not as good. But still enjoyable. 3/5
Glam Prog? No thanks.
I am secret shoegaze fan so was looking forward to this when it popped up this morning. It wasn't as good as My bloody Valentine or Slowdive but was decent enough. 3/5
I quite like some of this but it just seems a bit random and pulled together. Like its a really badly compiled mix tape. Theres some decent indie music here though so it still gets a 3/5
Have always found this to be at the proggy end of rock for my tastes but I gave it a chance and found it interesting (and Rockier than i imagined) if a little bloated. not sure I'll rush back but a decent piece of work and can see why others may adore it. 3/5
Its of no artistic value whatsoever. A little white guy moaning about the plight of the little white guy.
This is about the moment I think Radiohead became a bit too indie for me. I know lots of people love it but I struggle with this. I like the cinematic aspects of the songs but struggle to connect with it. 2/5
Nice easy Listening. Nothing more nothing less. 3/5
Bit Psychedelic for my tastes.
its alright without being remarkable. Bit too electronic and try hard. 2/5
Enjoyed this immensely. hugely Underated.
Great moments filled up with bang average filler tracks. 2/5
Like a less good Pearl Jam. 2/5
A singles band that couldn't put it together for a full album. Decent lead single tbf!
Think this was so refreshing in 1994 as the world was getting a little sick of grunge and Nirvana by numbers landfill bands. "Basket case" and "when I come around" are punk rock classics. Stone cold classics! "Welcome to Paradise" and "Longview" are also great but not sure some of the rest of the songs reach the heights of those 4, but they are very much enjoyable none the less. Can we have this version of Green day back please? 4/5
Did nothing for me 2/5
bloody enjoyable record this. Maybe longer than it needs to be la lovely relaxing listen. 4/5
Great song writing but have never enjoyed their delivery
After Parachutes Chris Martin had a realization. Why worry about interesting meaningful lyrics when you can just write a simple hook (Yellow was the most successful song from Parachutes) and let a 3 year old child write the lyrics. This is where they became the kings of the hook. During Clocks you can hear the exact second where they gave up on doing anything worthwhile musically and sold out to the masses. 2/5 as the hooks are quite catchy tbf. Lyrically Chas and Dave have more value.
Like a less melodic Joni Mitchell who also grates a bit.
The man's a genius. Probably a bell end too. The mix of styles here is breathtaking. Pop hits, Street anthems and vulnerable moments all mixed with humor and a good range of subject matter. Its one of the best hip hop albums of all time. 5/5
E's are good. But this album is not. 1/5
If someone asked me what classic rock was I'd stick on this record. Doesn't miss a beat from start to finish. The guitars, melodies and harmonies are on point throughout and the songwriting is exceptional. 5/5
Not very interesting or particularly groundbreaking Jazz. Well played and nice enough music to be on hold to. 2/5
Controversial opinion. This is his best work. His best, angriest and most solid batch of songs put together in the perfect order. I don't think hes ever topped this. It’s darker than what came before it and a reminder that life will beat the shit out of you and leave you broken. A story as old as time and no one tells it better than Bruce. 5/5
Never really been in to Psychedelia and this is a bit too out there to change my mind. Get how others may enjoy it though as its not like much I've heard before. 2/5
Obviously track 1 is great and the rest of the album is pleasant enough whilst mostly unremarkable. 3/5
Sometimes a debut sounds like a debut. Full of promise with flashes of genius. Whilst there are quite a few tracks on here that are forgettable run of the mill rock n roll songs, the great tracks (Breakdown, Strangered in the Night, and American girl elevate this to well above average album. 4/5
Remember this album blowing me away when released in 2004. Keep in mind their previous release was a greatest hits album so most people had assumed they were done, having already sold a zillion records. Its almost operatic. Like a punk Bohemian Rhapsody. They were already an arena rock band. So why not write a stadium rock record? The album is anchored by two 9 minute songs and a loose story runs throughout it. It moves from Bratty, anthemic. goofy and reflective, often in the same song! There are a few too many songs on it and a fair bit of filler but when it soars its stratospheric. What I hear is the original band for losers finally accepting they've won. Highlights: when September ends, Shes a rebel, Boulevard of broken dreams. 4/5
This is the album i think of when asked what the US Alternative music scene sounded like in the 90's. Its a bigger rock sound than most of their contemporaries attempted. They led the transition of Alt rock bans moving from the bars to the stadiums maintaining an underachiever vibe but borrowing hooks from classic stadium rock bands, all underpinned by powerful songwriting. All that is missing is a decent rock singers voice. He's like a pound shop Kurt Cobain. 4/5
Peak Sinatra. Nice enough spoken word pop/jazz. Not offensive in any way and nice background music with no discernible differences between the songs. Its fine but its not mind blowing or life changing. In fact its pretty dull. 2/5
I went to a Radiohead headline set at Glastonbury in 2017. Lasted 5 songs before getting bored and wandering off to watch the flaming lips kill it on another stage. This album is even duller than that live set was. Its remarkable to use so many intricate musical techniques and still make a record as dull as this. In its defense the last two tracks are great and its worth sticking with through the dull bits. Anyway... I'm off to listen to some Flaming lips. 2/5
Other than Kashmir its just alright. Sounds like every rock n roll band you've ever heard opening for a more interesting band. Always felt after Led Zeppelin I to IV this was a bit of an after thought using discarded tunes from those records. Kashmir is a masterpiece though so that elevates it to a 3. 3/5
Full disclosure; I bloody love the replacements and how much they influenced so many of my favorite bands today. no many Indie Rock bands (although they'd describe themselves as punk) could get away with a Kiss cover (Black Diamond) in the middle of the album, but it ends up being pure rock thunder! Unsatisfied, Androgynous, Sixteen blue and Answering Machine are cries from the heart that I instantly connected with on first listen and identified the replacements as a band for misfits everywhere. His cracked pained vocals are beyond compare. Even the nod back to early more silly punky stuff like "Gets its tonsils out" and "Garys got a bone" still have an immense amount of heart. Love it. 5/5
This was very different to what i expected. It starts out like quite a decent dance record. Inexplicably throws in a few covers which add very little. Then the latter part of the record goes nowhere until the massive hit "power of love" comes on. Not sure how much of a coherent album it is but its fucking mental and mostly enjoyable if only in parts. 3/5
With the little i know of the Temptations this sounded a little different to what I expected. A mix of funk, jazz and psychedelia. It has its moments and is an interesting record but not to my personal tastes. Musically its way ahead of where i expected it to be. 3/5
An absolutely mental concept double album interweaving the story of Lynyrd Skynyrd with that of a fictional band. The heavier rock numbers are great and when this album clicks its superb but with 90 minutes playing time there is a bit of excess baggage to sift through. Could they have achieved their goal on a single disk 50 to 60 minutes album? I think so and it would have turned this solid Southern rock epic into a classic. Regardless, this is a hugely ambitious undertaking for band and listener. I get that it won't be everyone's cup of tea. But I bloody loved it. Well most of it anyway. 4/5
One Banger and then a load of bang average filler. But I dare you not to wear out your carpet dancing to Karma Chameleon. I bloody Dare you! 2/5
Its nice enough but its just sort of bounces along gently without ever making much impact on me. 2/5
The best opening track of all time? Struggling to think of a better one. Its easy to love Baba O'Riley and Won't get fooled again but is this really the rock n roll masterpiece it is often heralded as or just a couple of great singles and a load of filler? Behind Blue eyes was a surprise. a heart wrenching ballad and not what i expected from them. A lot of the other tracks are decent rock n roll tunes of the time without being remarkable. Very enjoyable listen with great moments. Still waiting for Pete Townsend's book he did all research for though... 3/5
Fuck me! Aerosmith are a lot older than i realized. Although it seems time hasn't improved their sound. This is actually really decent classic rock. Like the Bluesy rock guitar licks a lot. Less cliched then their later stuff and Tyler's vocal doesn't dominate as much. A surprisingly high 4/5
Never listened to much beastie boys but enjoyed this a lot more than i expected to. Without trying they school many a funk rocker (take note RHCPs) in groove humor and style. From the crunch of "Sabotage" to the roots salute of "B-boys Makin' with the Freak Freak" its got the lot. 4/5
Gave up 5 songs in. I know and like some Shoegaze but this is just a fucking nonsense. Noise for the sake of noise. Reverb to annoy me and barely audible vocals. 1/5
Enjoyed this more than previous kinks records we've had. Still has large elements of Psychedelia which isn't really my bag but it has a real 70's rock vibe to it too which i enjoy hugely. Plenty of filler but the hits hit. 3/5
Quite enjoyed this. Good singer, decent rapper. good songwriting but there is a but of filler here. 3/5
Cuba's best musicians gathered together in 1997 to recreate the island sound of the 40's and 50's. This is what resulted and its fucking magical. Authentic and timeless. 5/5
Of the 138 Neil young albums on this list this is one of the better ones. 4/5
Not his best but still decent.
The guy on the cover looks smacked off his tits. the music is way to indie/Psychedelic/surreal for me. 2/5
Glorious genre spanning wizardry. The first of three genuinely game changing albums from one of the best american songwriters of all time. Not everything will hit with everyone but the audacity on display here deserves at least a 4. 4/5
Royksopp are Norwegian according to wiki. Norway is fucking cold. So its fucking remarkable that they manage to create quite such a summery vibe here! Chilled out Dance music with soul. not my Genre but a very pleasant listen. Press play and hear the snow begin to melt. 4/5
Enjoyed this- too many songs and too long but great song writing. 4/5
Momentarily interesting. Mostly shite
Not many albums can make you dance, sway and cry all within the hour. 'Rum, Sodomy and the Lash' is The Pogues' finest work, although some prefer the almost as good follow up 'If I Should Fall From Grace With God'. The album is packed with an impressive amount of variety, original material blending seamlessly with covers and instrumental numbers. The last thing MacGowan or his band could ever be accused of is being boring, and the almost complete absence of bad songs on this album is a testament to that. It goes down rightly as the album that captured the band at their emotional, intoxicated and brilliant best. 5/5
floats along nicely, makes a pleasant enough layered sound and the vocal and songwriting hold my interest to a point but I'm not sure its anything more than a decent bit of shoegazey dream pop. 3/5
Dull.
Not my genre and nothing special here to enjoy
Don't dislike this and the bluesy guitars are nice. But the whole thing seems a bit aimless and dare i say dull. Can't decide if its laid back blues rock which i like or lazy uninspiring blues which i hate. Think he just about gets away with it here. 3/5
Repetitive and annoying with zero edge. Get to Fuck. 1/5
From the year of my creation. Looks a bit like the cat lady off the Simpsons had a makeover. Sings other peoples songs well. Outside of the singles fairly unremarkable though. The Beatles cover was a fucking travesty. 2/5
All I really knew of Lorde was that Royals song she did when she was about 15 and she's mates with Taylor Swift. This is very similar to Taylor's more poppy stuff. A quick check notices that Taylor's co-songwriting chief Jack Antoff is on the credits. Surprisingly good indie pop. Delivered in a much more palatable way for my tastes. 4/5
Classic Jazz/Swing orchestra who played with prime Sinatra. Great to listen to whilst WFH. Not sure I'd go back to it many times like i do with Miles but enjoyed it enough to give it 3/5.
Mind blowing that this is from 1996. The mood of this is bitter and resolute. She bares her heart, no matter if it hurts. The Technical proficiency here is stunning for a debut and its Angrier and subtler then other albums of the same time. Like it a lot. 4/5
Inventive Indie rock. short, quickfire with some crazy guitar riffs. Liked it alot. 4/5
Interesting for about 5 minutes then dull and repetitive with no discernible difference between tracks. 2/5
I tried to stay away from Pearl Jam for as long as I could. Not growing up in the era when Pearl Jam reigned supreme and Eddie Vedder's wavy locks were posted on the walls of teenage girls everywhere, the plethora of Eddie imitators (mainly Creed) had turned me off to the idea of actually ever enjoying them. But on a Sunday at Reading 2006 I couldn't resist their genius any longer. We actually had no intention of watching them but the alternative was Maximo Park and that was miles away! Only knew about 2 songs but they completely blew me away. I then went on to become mildly obsessed with 90s pearl jam for a bit and this is still their finest work. 5/5

Every time I write about the Smiths I feel I should reinforce my view that Morrissey is a cunt. The worst person who's music I will love forever. Now that is out of the way... From start to finish, The Queen Is Dead is, perhaps, The Smiths' strongest album, and it's certainly their funniest. In particular, the Kinks-like music hall bounce of "Frankly, Mr. Shankly" and the rockabilly-tinged "Vicar in a Tutu" sport hilariously cruel lyrics, while brutal one-liners crop up in nearly every track. Elsewhere, the shimmering "The Boy with the Thorn in His Side" is one of Johnny Marr's most glorious tunes, while "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out" features one of Morrissey's most disconsolately romantic lyrics. A stone cold 5/5 for one of the best albums that will ever be written.
We get it Bjork. You're a creative artsy type. Far too Indie for me. 1/5
Yeah- this isn't for me. I can see why other people like the folky and well constructed songs. But i find the lyric and style grates a little after a while. Enjoyed Homeward bound though. 2/5
Before they became completely irrelevant U2 did this. And we all saw that it was good. And on the 7th Day Bono rested and decided to become a cunt. 4/5
The first album post Smiths from the Mozfather. Decent but missing the soaring Marr guitars. 4/5
Just find these so dull. Very appropriately named to be fair. 2/5
Like a Plodding Dull Primal Scream. Drops off noticeably after the first two songs and I'm immeasurably bored by half way through. 2/5
Genuinely one of the worst 42 minutes I’ve sat through. Seriously. What. And I cannot emphasise this enough. The. Fuck?
If the middle of the road is dangerous then I guess this is dangerous. Couple of decent moments but if your going to do a live album at least do it from one gig and don't cherry pick from multiple. 2/5
Bold, unpretentious 60s pop rock. Not a lot not to like. enjoyed it as an album in 2022 so its prob worth an extra point for being written in 1966. 4/5
My favourite album ever made. Doesn’t miss on a single track. He shot for an unholy hybrid of Orbison, Dylan and Spector—and actually reached it. "Come take my hand", he invited in the opening lines. "We're ridin' out tonight to case the Promised Land." 5/5
It’s just not very good is it?
Tried a few times with theses and have never got on with them. It’s me not you.
Not my fave Bowie album but it’s stil an exceptional piece of work
Overblown, bloated, overproduced rubbish
Sounding as fresh today as 28 years ago. The album of my childhood. Played it to death. Like a lot of kids my age WTSMG had my curiosity but this record grabbed my attention like no other I can remember. Changed the course of music in the uk. Biblical. 5/5
Cheer the fuck up. After 3 albums did She ever stop to think the problem might be her? Songwriting is actually pretty basic considering there's a team of the fuckers. strong vocal tbf but theres plenty of those. 2/5
For a band that consistently wrote some absolute bangers this is a bit of a sprawling mess. There is probably a decent 11 track album in there somewhere but its just too long and bloated. 2/5
Pop Perfection. From a country singer none the less. She consistently defies expectations and refuses to stay in her box. The songwriting is as exceptional as ever and the jump in genres is effortless. Its fun, confident, playful and forward thinking. The girl is brilliant and one of the best songwriters of our her generations. One day she'll do a grime album. and that'll be great as well. 5/5
Not their dullest. But still quite dull.
Fucking glorious. 5/5
All 12 songs sound more a less the same
It’s just doesn’t miss. 5/5
Where’s the book Pete?
The greatest rock n roll record of all time. 5/5
Mostly sounded the same but nice enough
Just awful
One of those bands I like whenever I listen to but never go back to or own any of their records. This is great. Maybe a bit proggy in places for my taste but decent. 3/5
Poor man’s little Richard
