Album Summary

Calenture is the fourth studio album by Australian rock group The Triffids, it was released in November 1987 and saw them explore themes of insanity, deception and rootlessness—the title refers to a fever suffered by sailors during long hot voyages. It reached No. 32 on the Australian Kent Music Report Albums Chart. In November 1987, it reached No. 24 on the Swedish Albums Chart, in May 1988 it peaked at No. 25 on the New Zealand Albums Chart. The album spawned three singles, "Bury Me Deep in Love" (1987), "Trick of the Light" and "Holy Water" (both in 1988). The latter track was recorded with American producer Craig Leon. In 2007 Calenture was re-released as a 2× CD with five bonus tracks on the first disc and twelve tracks on the second disc, mostly rehearsal or studio demos of the original album tracks. In February it appeared on the Belgium Albums Chart Top 60.

Songs that play exclusively during the end credits of boring movies.

I'm sorry. Just... no.

An album of incredibly forgettable 80s music from Australia.

Super forgettable album but still an enjoyable listen in the moment

Again, didn’t get a chance to hear this in full but from the few songs I heard it was nothing too special. I should give it another chance.

Very late 80’s…not great

This was kinda boring. They opening track was just really not my thing and then the rest of the album proceeded to also really not be my thing

Blending The Cure and The Cult... Hmm might have to give this one a closer second listen.

Pop Rock med bra melodier. Bury Me Deep in Love och Save what you can bäst. Även A trick of the light sticker ut. 3,5 av 5.

Perfectly fine. Probably won’t go back to it, but certainly didn’t dislike it.

Rather like actual Triffids this made me hide under cover to prevent the venomous stinger created by the music to render me brain dead. A crime against musical decency. 1/5 17/10/26

Idk. Not sure how it made the list. Sounds like so many others, were they the original, I doubt it. Very dated. Generic 80s sound.

I found myself warming up to this album a lot as it progressed. Really snappy 80's Brit-pop with sharp lyrics and unique vocals.

4/10. A bit of a weird style and just not very interesting

Milquetoast

Realltly hated this. Late 80s is not my time I guess.

This album has some strange combinations of sounds, but I loved listening to it anyway. It has truly a little bit of everything: from an Irish kind of folk, to rock and pop, without losing so much cohesion. The songs are all pretty energetic, and, for those that are not, there is something nice to say about each one. I really like also to find some interesting instrumental moments in here. Sure, nothing too original, but there are some pretty nice arrangements and sections that make of this album something else than just an average folkish energetic combination of pop and rock sounds. It has its charm. I would not say a remarkable one, but surely it is a very pleasant and even fun listen.

Deacon Blue but kinda boring sorry!

Is this... Christian Rock? This first song really sounds like Christian Rock. OK, second song is not Christian Rock. Just... generic-sounding '80s rock from Australia? I really can't imagine how anyone could think people need to hear this before they die, but here we are. OK, now I'm starting to think this IS Christian Rock? This is good enough to not be a 1-star album, but just barely. ("Open For You" and "Holy Water" made me strongly reconsider giving this more than 1 star.)

Woof, that was a slog

There was nothing here for me.

Kinda generic, but at least one track stood out to me.

The Good: We're gonna get hot and steamy! The Bad: Oh wait... more like shivering and cold... The Ugly: Finding out that triffids has no meaning at all... When the album started, after about the first song, I was convinced that I was listening to a UK band trying to herald back sounds of yesterday... to find out that this is a Aussie band trying to herald back sounds of yesterday... I wish they had stayed in yesterday land... Of all the awesome bands which have come out of Australia, this seems to be one that I wouldn't want to have listened to... at all... Not that it was bad... but it was so annoying after a while that I just wanted to start skipping songs to get to the end... which I am not allowed to do. I feel that I deserve 4* stars for having sat through this album... while the band itself deserves 5* for actually having humored the singer without killing him in the process... we don't condone violence, by the by... Still, this album did not stir up "hot" feelings... 2 1/2* which I fear shall be brought to 2*

Very nice album, really liked it.

There is something here that I like, I just think other bands have done similar things better, and without the aggravating 80s production.

It's just not very good.

Cheesy and nothing special at all to it. Insane that this is on the list.

We enjoyed it

I wish someone had buried this album deep in the hills where no one would ever find it.

Meant to be jangle pop according to description but not what I was expecting. It's like a gayer cross of The Smiths and Prefab sprout. The songwriting is solid and production is big but it's not great to be honest.

My day of The Triffids was not enjoyable

These one-star reviews are ridiculous. Is it unlistenable? Not in the least. Is it unremarkable? Without a doubt. It's inclusion on this list feels like some bone-toss to have Australian artists represented.

Fun but nothing really remarkable.

#460 There seems to be a lot of hate for this in the reviews and reading through some of them, I get the criticism but I quite enjoyed this, without ever fully loving it. There’s a bunch of new wave bands to compare to, and maybe those contemporaries make this less than essential listening. One thing that was notable whilst listening was a definite Nick Cave vibe, I’m not sure if that is simply some Australian connection here. Heard before? ❌ Would I revisit?❓ Listen before you die? ❌ Fave track(s): Kelly’s Blues Rating: 6/10 ⭐️⭐️⭐️

i also liked this

Bury me with love was comically bad.

This is the exact kind of music that shouldnt be on a list like this

Absolutely not. The religious parts were so weird

I didn’t get this album. Maybe I am missing a masterpiece, but I felt nothing listening to this record.

OK, so, I don't want to overstate this, but what the actual fuck? I'm not a huge fan of 80s pop music, but this is just like a cheap knockoff of 80s pop. Like AI absorbed all the shitty, overproduced, overwrought 80s pop music and spit this out as its rendition. Does it approximate the 80s pop sound? Yeah, pretty well (not that that's a good thing). Is it soulless as fuck? Oh yeah. Do I hear a harpsichord? Jesus, get me out of here.

Very formulaic. Unremarkable playing and vocals. Sort of like the Australian version of deacon blue. Both can be avoided

Hard to understand what gets this album on the list. Need representation from Australia? I didn’t hate it, but am having a hard time understanding what sets it apart. Not in the same class as much of the other music we’ve been listening to.

1 for the recorded album, 3 for the demos. It’s bad dad rock that was terribly produced, but the stripped down versions were eons more interesting.

I may have just come in with super low expectations, but I thought it was actually ok.

Absolutely nothing noteworthy about disc one but the lesson from disc two is that you can over do it

Not for me

Is this not just super generic? Why is this list-worthy? Surely not based on **shocked breath** personal preference of Robert Dimery?!? At least this time it was an unknown Australian 1980s band instead of a Scottish one… 2⭐️

The thing people are missing with the reviews here is that although this _sounds_ like an extremely generic 80s album, it's by an Australian band. 1987 is right about the time music was first invented in Australia, and since Australia didn't get the internet until 2024, there was no way they could have known about the work of other 80s artists in order to have been influenced. This also appears to be a form of Christian rock, which is also wildly impressive since Christianity wouldn't reach Australia until around 2001. Extreme sarcasm aside, this is just really generic 80s music with Christian-rock overtones. No idea why it's here - it didn't chart all that well, even in Australia/NZ, and the only thing in the "legacy" section on Wikipedia is that it was listed in the 1001 albums book. It's definitively "alright". The vocals are good and the backing is fine with a little variation... it just doesn't do anything to differentiate itself from other 80s music.

It’s really not as bad as some people make it seem. It didn’t blow be away but it was nice Z

This sounds like music you'd hear at a mall

I was glad when the album was over.

the kind of music that plays when you're laying in bed having an after sex smoke with the bard from your downstairs neighbors d&d campaign

Some day I’ll see this review and be like “huh I don’t remember listening to that one”

Not bad, didn’t make a huge impression tho

perfectly fine but i didnt like the vocal treatment or really much about this to be honest... but it was fine you know... like not bad just fine but not in a good way if that makes sense

Wanted to like this moree than I did. Started off strong but last me after a few tracks.

This started out promisingly with two pretty cool tracks with shades of The Cure and U2 but then lapsed into typical cheesy 80s “sophisti-pop” fare with only the occasional interesting moment. Nothing terrible though.

What the fuck was that

OI MATEY! Its the AUSSIES! It was something let me tell ya. I was upside down and back up again like a flippy thingy.

Hell nah. Unaustralian. Might be the least of an album I’ve listened to before making up my mind. RYM: N Saved a song: N

Not sure what this is supposed to be. Why would it be in the top 1001?

Not my thing at all!

Oh look, another 80's post punk album that is completely unremarkable in any way. This band has 43 thousand monthly listeners and only has one song with more than 2 million streams at the time of recording (not on this record btw) so I don't think this had a big cultural impact either. Just a pure boring nothingburger of an album that doesn't really need to be here. 3/10

Pretty dull

Thanks, I hate it

This album was new to me and I enjoyed it, but on first listen not quite as good as Born Sandy Devotional. Will be listening again though!

New to me, I was in from the first couple of tracks, then I felt myself drifting out. Then well back in with ‘unmade love’ ‘open for you and ‘holy water’. Good pop.

I got a little bored of this. Vocals reminded me of Tim Booth or Martin Rossiter but it turns out they're from Perth, Australia! Not terrible, and would have enjoyed about 30 minutes of this, but a bit long and one-note.

Genius - Thank you RGP. All together now 🎶🎶🎶 “My door is always open for you.” 3 stars. Tom.

53/100. This is music that I would normally enjoy, but I just found this too dull. It has some interesting parts, but I didn’t care much for this at all. Felt like the most generic version of every genre associated with this album.

3.0 This album did one thing thats for sure, made me intensely curious as to what the 31 higher rated albums on the Australian Kent Music Report Albums Chart of 1987 were.

This album is boring.

They sound a lot like INXS and have just the right touch of 80s jubilation to settle comfortably in my brain’s happy spots. It’s not a hill I’d die on, but this band I’ve never heard of is pretty great.

If I wanted to listen to an Australian band from the 80s it would be Men At Work. That said, thi album had some nice moments but it mostly kinda borning.

Another one that I didn’t need to hear.

Completely boring

idk, maybe the sound is dated, but I like this flavor of late 80s/early 90s folky pop rock. I could see playing this on a long drive when I need to feel my feelings but not get too depressed about it. 3 stars to spite the haters. :)

Like many other reviewers, I can't understand why this is on the list. It's not bad, but certainly doesn't stand out as memorable, unique, or even a good representation of its genre. At least it's not another Brit pop LP.

Pure 80's cheese, like one or two songs that were alright.

Bloated and boring.

Not very exciting, but inoffensive. Seemed a bit derivative to me, so I'm a bit surprised it made this list. Unremarkable

Another album that lands right in the middle for me. Nothing bad about the music, but nothing making me want to go back to it either. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Jeg er vist ved at nå mit synth pop loft. Meget kedelig omgang

Ikke overbevist om at den er essentiel, men ret fed opdagelse

His vocals were interesting, but most of the songs blended together for me.

Bruce Springsteen down under?

Nothing horrible. Nothing great.

Mid. Boring. Forgettable. I bailed on track 7.

Honestly this is entirely my jam. Little Nick Cave, little Gary Numann, little emo.

i just didn’t like this…….

Calenture is the fourth album by The Triffids. It was released in the fall 1987 and explores themes of insanity, deception and the feelings and results of a nomadic lifestyle —the title refers to a fever suffered by sailors during long hot voyages. Great album of typical 80's new wave/pop mix. An enjoyable record that as a former 80's kid I'd highly recommend.

It was fine … but don’t know why I’m listening to a 40yr old album by a band I’ve never heard of and will probably never hear of again

Pretty good for an album with so few plays on Spotify
