Album Summary

L.A. Woman is the sixth studio album by the American rock band the Doors, released on April 19, 1971, by Elektra Records. It is the last to feature lead singer Jim Morrison during his lifetime due to his death three months after the album's release, though he would posthumously appear on the 1978 album An American Prayer. Even more so than its predecessors, the album is heavily influenced by blues. It was recorded without record producer Paul A. Rothchild after he fell out with the group over the perceived lack of quality of their studio performances. Subsequently, the band co-produced the album with longtime sound engineer Bruce Botnick. "Love Her Madly" was released as a single in March 1971, preceding the album's release, and reached the Top 20 in the Billboard Hot 100. Upon release, the album peaked at number nine on the Billboard 200 and reached number 28 on the UK Albums Charts. The track "Riders on the Storm" also achieved chart success. Critics including Richie Unterberger and David Quantick have called L.A. Woman one of the Doors' best albums, citing Morrison's vocal performance and the band's stripped-down return to their blues rock roots.

Mostly unlistenable ramblings from an alcoholic drug addict. If some guy in my local pub started singing like that, I'd get him thrown out. Irredeemable rubbish until the last track, but by that point, I couldn't be doing with it any more and had switched off, both physically and mentally.

I like the music. The shouty drunk man who invaded the studio less so.

Some songs still sound great: "Lover Her Madly", "L.A. Woman", and "Riders In The Storm". The rest sound like blues-rock retreads.

Found it hard to objectively land on a 4* as I know this isn’t something I’m inclined to revisit. I also concluded after 30 odd years of familiarity, that I don’t like Morrisons vocals.

I don't know how to feel about this album.. some parts I enjoy it but at some times it loses me 3/5

Just great stuff (although 'The WASP' is a skipper)

Few bands have taken the rough negative critical reappraisal The Doors have. Of the big 60s bands, their stock has definitely fallen farther and faster than just about any other. I'm a bit torn because I do think their actual music is quite good (especially Manzarek's keyboard and Krieger's guitar work). However, I completely agree that Jim Morrison is insufferable and quite bad as a lyricist. I can't say that an entire album of his songwriting is particularly engaging but there are a few songs that are worth relistens even with Morrison's very obvious shortcomings.

Another great classic rock album. L.A. Woman is a favorite song (especially when driving in LA), but Riders on the Storm and Love Her Madly are also classics. Really great mix of blues and rock to make up a great album.

Enjoyed it more than I expected.

8.7/10, ⭐️: Riders on the Storm

I really liked this album, loved the more bluesy feel. Jim Morrisons voice and some decent guitar and drums made it a decent listen. Hyacinth House sort of brought Ruby by Kaiser Chiefs to mind, just the verse music nothing else. Id give it 5 but that bloody intrusive bontempi does my head in.

The better of The Doors albums. I actually enjoyed this one. Had a really nice atmosphere. I might not have been 100% focusing on it at points, but it was great chilled blues to wake up gently on a Sunday morning to. L'America and Hyacinth House were really good tracks, and who doesn't love Riders on the Storm?

I hated this album. It was a plodding slog. Riders on the Storm was probably enough to get it a one.

Brings back high school memories : )

This album was a pretty great listen through. I maintain (incorrectly, it's worth saying) that piano and guitar don't congregate well in music since they both always sound like they're fighting for space at the front, but there's enough warm Fairchild goodness and I can't deny it's charmingly bright sound. The album has a relatively uneven keel, but the title track was rock-solid and ending with Riders of The Storm leaves a very pleasant aftertaste. I never noticed that little warm ambient bit at the very end that leads out the final track. With the rain and the synth dancing over each other, slowly fading out... terrific, terrific. Fav tracks: Riders On The Storm, L.A. Woman

И L.A. Лучшая песня: L.A. Woman

I mean, yeah... it was alright.

Good memories of them. Decent album

oh them. The strange dichotomy of The Doors being my most disliked band that I like. Mmmmm ambivalence. Another reviewer put it very well "[The Doors are] a highly eccentric and dramatic train wreck". Yes, exactly. I'm not into it. But I also can't deny it. It is and always has been somewhat awful with just enough flashes of brilliance to be compelling. Maybe I'm just not on enough drugs.

A good time.

Ranked at #362 on Rolling Stone's 500 best albums list, one can only think on L.A Woman as one of the greatest records that has ever been made. And the truth is, it actually is. L.A Woman continued and established the blues rock sound mixing it with baroque pop, and the psychedelic sound from their early work. Morrison Hotel, the previous record, saw The Doors bringing out new influences, a polished sound and somehow even more inspiration that would become in this one. Their sixth studio album. The recording process was described as tense, heavy due to Jim Morrison's strong character. It contains powerful blues songs "The Changeling", "Been Down so Long", "Cars Hiss by my Window" and of course, the iconic 8 minute song, L.A Woman. Lyrcism it's as always in the band, a key part to the album. In this one in particular Jim Morrison says goodbye to Los Angeles since he went to Paris after the album and never returned. L'america it's actually about a story of the discovery of America and in Hyacint House he speaks about life and death. The surrealistic poetry of "The Wasp" leaves us with the also iconic one "Riders on The Storm" where Jim reflects about an episode in his childhood on which he felt like his soul was being possessed and devoured by an indian shaman. This one is without a doubt a record that every rock fan should hear at least once in his life.

It's hard to beat a Doors album. Almost gotta do it with another Doors album, you know?

Decent singles, no memorable deep cuts

I've never been a big fan of The Doors and of this album I only knew Riders on the Storm. At least they finally had a bass player on this one and were playing more blues and less psychedelia. I liked the title track a good deal more than I expected, but have to balance that with the pretty awful L'America. Morrison's final vocal recordings are really variable: sometimes powerful and sometimes he sounds out of it.

Been a while since I heard this album and its still superb. Some of my favourite Doors tracks are on this one - LA Woman, Love Her Madly and Riders on the Storm are excellent.

Epic Rock n Roll Psych

Probably my list favorite of 'The Doors' albums in the list. Still a pretty good album, but not their best.

Another band that means a lot to some people and very little to many others. I'm in the latter category. Some very good stuff on here but this is one of those "you had to be there" type bands. Overall, not horrible.

Enjoyment: 7/10 Replayability: 7/10 Cohesion: 8/10 Flow/Pacing: 7/10 Artistic Merit: 9/10 Weighted Average: 7.45/10 Review: An interesting mix of early 70s blues and psychedelic rock. Some hit better than others, and I rediscovered the gem that is Love Her Madly. Overall not bad, but nothing exceptional. Liked Song(s): Love Her Madly, L.A. Woman, Hyacinth House, Riders on the Storm Disliked Song(s): Been down so Long, L'America Recommend? Yes Heard Before? Partly

Du rock plutôt chill et assez oubliable.

Mukiinmenevää blueshroktia. Ihan mielellään kuunteli.

Levyllinen aivan jepis perus bluesrokkia. Aika mitäänsanomaton levy, mutta puolikkaan tähden antaisin ekstraa levyn päätöskappaleesta jos mahdollista, vibes were immaculate. Honorary 3½ stars.

6 sterren

Somewhat boring album.

Good for driving. Zoned me out in a good way.

This is for someone, but not for me.

Love the Doors. Miss Jim Morrison.

Not entirely to my taste - it's rawer and darker than their previous albums - my tastes tend more towards the "poppy", but Riders on the Storm is a classic, and a great closer. The album art is excellent, though - I'd definitely watch a sitcom starring Stephen Merchant, Richard O'Sullivan, Charlie Day and Bill Oddie.

Cudowne, z resztą ponownie, zestawienie tej płyty z pogodą. Idealne, szare i deszczowe sobotnie popołudnie spędzone z tą płytą.

For me, this is one of the best of the Doors. The blues, the Dionysian lyrics, the pure Southern California tone. The bass lines push every song, something no other Doors album has. I don’t listen to the Doors as much as I did, but they certainly measured how I think about rock and roll. Also, as with every Doors album/song the playing feels improvised and in the moment.

it’s not for me personally + won’t listen again but i appreciate the innovation. i don’t like organs and keys in music (esp “rock”) unless it’s churchy (prob why i don’t like it - the association) but it makes sense for this sound. each band element is refined and sounds raw but crisp and clean. no idea what the guy is singing about + heard some racist ramblings.. good job The Doors i guess! hope you found your L.A woman’s

Absolutely not

I do not see the resemblance. Troede vi havde banket blues godt og grundigt igennem by then.

love it but not as much as their debut

One time I was on a trip with my wife’s cousins. We made a group playlist and the one cousins girlfriend added the entire doors discography to the playlist. I think looking back, that kinda ruined the doors for me. But like, it’s still a good album.

Many listens. I enjoy the singles and the more “Doors-y” songs to the straight up blues tunes. L.A. Woman is one of my favorite songs of theirs.

The song la woman carries the whole album. It’s an all timer. There are a few other noteworthy songs, but it’s really just that one that gives a reason to listen to this album.

This album has so much rumors and talks around (like the one that Morrison recorded his voice in the toilet because of the sound and acoustic), that these rumors and talks weight much more now that the album by itself - a couple of good songs (L. A. Woman and Riders on the Storm) - but nothing special from my perspective

Pretty enjoyable, some classics. Blues, pig pen esque

Pretty good album. Interesting that it has a more bluesy bent. I really like Riders on the Storm and Love Her Madly. I don't love the title track as much. The rest is OK. Kind of a soft 4.

I still feel a bit like the Doors are one of those bands I like their Greatest Hits better than individual albums, but I did like this more than the previous two albums we’ve had on the list. So bumping it up to a 4.

The Doors walks this fine line of being so clearly influenced by the blues but marrying that vibe with a thoroughly psychedelic feel - and so avoid sounding super derivative or watered down like so many other 60s and 70s bands. Maybe not the strongest entry in their repertoir, but still a fun listen.

Not a huge fan of the doors, but this was solid.

Absolute masterpiece.

Overall, not a bad album. It was alright to have it playing in the background while I was doing other stuff. Although there's quite a lot happening, it sometimes just feels like it's a bit meh, but it's just overall quite nice. I enjoyed the vibes.

My friends in high school loved The Doors and were in a tribute band that played their songs all the time so I had a lot of exposure to The Doors, a bit too much. Now it's been ${YEARS_SINCE_HIGHSCHOOL} years ago and I'm enjoying this again more than I thought. Some tracks were meh but "Riders On The Storm" takes this to a 5 star album.

There's something about The Doors that just rubs me the wrong way. The vast majority of their stuff is either meh or actively annoying. This album was no exception, though there were two things that kept me from giving this 1 star. First, the bass playing is quite good throughout. Second, "Riders On The Storm" is one of (maybe only) song of theirs that I truly love. Its presence here gives it a bump. 2 stars.

Never been a Doors fan, so I listened to this with an open mind. Still don’t like them.

For me, they saved the best for last.

Soooooooooo Overrated Garbage

The Doors are so much fun. Probably not the best band for an aspiring alcoholic to be idolizing at 17, but fun nonetheless. L.A.Woman! What a great way to go out! 5

yeah, the lyrics are pretentious beatnik bullshit (par for the course when we talk about this band), but I'll be damned if this album doesn't sound amazing

Eh it’s a fine album, it just doesn’t resonate with me and I probably wouldn’t come back to it

Most of the album was nice but kind of inoffensive and tame. I did really enjoy it though. It ended on an absolute banger.

Most of the album is very inoffensive and unremarkable, with Riders On The Storm being the true standout. Still, it's vibey and I enjoyed it, so can't complain.

There were some exciting tracks and some ordinary ones, so overall, the album felt rather ordinary.

I may have hyped this one too much in my mind. Kinda mid: 3.1

The Doors do it all. Rock. Psychedelic rock. Funk. Chicago blues. Country folkie rock. Weddings, parties, anything. Rate fifteen dollars a day. Bongo jazz a speciality. (a la Revolution Rock) And to borrow from the Player in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead: I can do you organ and love without the rhetoric, and I can do you organ and rhetoric without the love, and I can do you all three concurrent or consecutive, but I can't do you love and rhetoric without the organ. Organ is compulsory -- they're all organ, you see ... For many, many years, I've been enjoying the sample of Morrison's voice on Stoned Immaculate by Dub Syndicate. Thanks to the 1001 Album Generator project, today at last I heard the song from which is is lifted. Thanks, Generator!

it sounded like a rambling mess of drug induced jamming by some high school friends.

Hi 1001er! Would you like to listen to a 55-year-old record of mediocre/derivative blues songs sung by a drugged out dipshit? Not really. Well, I have bad news for you....

Bluesy, psychedelic and moody. Great album which I hadn't properly listened to before now. Really enjoyed it and glad it was offered up today.

Good stuff!

Its wqs good

Always a 5 no matter what album by the Doors.

No complaints

Much more bluesy than I expected. Some great guitar work and a bit of an iconic sound. Enjoyed it.

"Riders of the storm" är minst dålig men det säger absolut ingenting Rädda era barn, lås dörrarna

Doors tröttaste bluesalbum. Med undantag för Love her madly och - i synnerhet Riders on the storm.

Inte minst i låtar som Been down long och Car hiss by my Window down. Det är väl mest i avslutande Ridders of the storm hippiepsykadelikan lyser igenom. Hur är då bluesbandet the Doors?

Heard before?:❌️/✔️(not entirely) Will listen again?:❌️

classic but mid

When you have an LA woman in your life it's hard to not be romantic about The Doors.

The whole album sounds like it would go very hard performed live in a bar. Would make a good movie soundtrack. Bonus points for the guy that starts making harmonica noises. Not sure how much I love the vocals on some of the tracks. Riders on the storm closes out the album very well. Very atmospheric sounds. Overall not a bad album, just don’t think I’d listen very often. Honourable mention for L’America, very good instrumentals. Highlights: Car hiss by the window Hyacinth House Riders on the storm

L.A Woman The doors Generally very good instrumental but subpar vocals ruin it for me mostly. Potentially good for background atmosphere. Riders on the storm best song I liked the piano part here. Love her madly and cars hiss by my window also good. L’America worst song vocals too terrible for me. Unlikely to play randomly

The album sounds like a musically matured band that's found their sound. The psychedelia, the blues, the sex, drugs, and rock n roll. There are a couple tracks that show the record down, lose the grove, but overall a solid album. A roommate has this on vinyl at one time. I wouldn't mind picking it up myself if it showed up in a bin.

A few incredible moments, but no matter how amazing the doors are (and they are) their music in 2026 always feels a little dated.

I love the doors, that's it lol

Typiskt the doors sound

It's a blues album with Riders on the Storm at the end. Did I need to listen to it after the previous two? I don't think so. It's very well produced but Rather listen to Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters. 3/5.

To paraphrase another final album, the time you serve is equal to the king snake you whip out onstage in Miami.

This is just a comprehensive covering of all the reasons The Doors have lasted even though they imploded before hitting superstardom. Morrison's talent was directly tied to his Icarus high wire act. 4.5

I’d like to pretend that this is the last doors album and nothing came after this and this is the perfect conclusion to their discography

Great album. Way more blues than I thought the doors had. Big standouts but also I loved the less known songs too. Giving a 4 because I don’t think it’s an album I’ll return to often

god i do not need to listen to more blues
