Album Summary

Heroes to Zeros is the third and final studio album by The Beta Band, released in 2004. It was produced by The Beta Band and mixed by Nigel Godrich. The cover illustration was created by comic book writer and artist Kaare Andrews. The Beta Band logo for the album was created by comic book artist Dave McCaig, later to be reused on The Best of the Beta Band. The song "Liquid Bird" features a sample of "Painted Bird" by Siouxsie and the Banshees. Mason later said, "We shouldn't have produced it ourselves, and if you think we did a bad job of producing it, we made an even worse job mixing it. We presented it to the label, and they immediately handed the whole thing over to Nigel Godrich to mix."

It was okay…the first track one was a banger. The rest was all over the place style wise.

This was so beyond mid

hm kinda neat but I don't know if the songs are good?

Barely leaves an impression

has this floaty and cool fly like an eagle quality to it. interchangeably spacey and funky. unique in the sense that it's my first time hearing this sound expanded in this way, and i quite liked it. favorite song is Easy or Liquid Bird. very soft 4

Hmm. Lyriikoista en niin välittänyt. Kai tämä nipin napin ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I almost wrote this off because i didnt care for the intro track, but the rest of it was solid! Standouts are Lion Thief, Troubles, Out-Side, Liquid Bird, Simple and Pure For.

Hér eru mjög hressandi kaflar og oft skemmtilegir, en eftir þrjú rennsli finn ég ekki nægt úmpf til að lyfta plötunni í fjarka. Segjum 3,3.

I was into the Beta Band's earlier EPs and albums, but for some reason I'm not sure I ever listened to this one, and I'm surprised it's the album chosen for this list. That said, I found it to be really solid and enjoyable, with no skips.

This was really good. Unlike many other reviewers, I never got bored. I’ll be listening more.

This was super cool actually! I sensed and could probably guess many of their influences. Each song is interesting in its own way

good album

Better than expected based on the wiki article

At first I was a little bored but found I appreciated it more as the album went on. My top tracks were Out-Side and Simple.

This was a chore.

More interesting than some from this period but not hitting enough to get another listen

Slightly better than I expected, and more enjoyable than Hot Shots II. It's still a puzzling choice in my opinion, though. The Beta Band has released a grand total of three albums, and two of them are on the list. Was it really necessary to have 2/3 of their discography here ?... It's not a bad album, but there's also nothing really remarkable about it. The soft rock vibe is nice, the vocals are all right, there's a couple of good songs like Out-Side... and yet it always feels a bit off, as if something was missing. Maybe an emotional element ? Some of the arrangements also sound a bit derivative, and the whole thing feels like background music, or maybe the soundtrack of an indie movie. Almost a 3*, but not quite. I'm pretty sure I'll have forgotten everything by tomorrow. 4/10

Very enjoyable. Listened it twice.

Not sure what this generic band is doing on this list. It’s not even unpleasant, but what exactly makes them stand out? They weren’t particularly innovative or influential either. I’m genuinely puzzled. Is it the vaguely electronic touches or the vocal harmonies that aren’t even that good? A mystery to me.

Nice, not inspiring.

I suppose albums aren't necessarily on the list because they're the best ever. It might be because the writer/compiler thought they demonstrate a particular style or introduce a scene well. This is a pleasant, enjoyable album I'd like to listen to again, and also one from which I couldn't remember a single song after it had ended.

Real surprise for this before now unlistened to band The songs were 60s tinged but still seems fresh and there was something really amiable but interesting about their tracks. Hard to define but really enjoyable. High 3.

Extremely forgettable

Not bad, certainly not good. Boring

This band did not need two entries on the list. It’s fine, but didn’t wow me.

very easy to listen to, but nothing that really stood out that much the album cover is amazing tho

sonically decent music with notably good production, but it's rather forgettable and seemingly aimless for the most part. typical electronic indie rock of the era.

Very good.

Not too bad. Surprised me a bit, but still did not have anything stand out that significantly.

No idea why this is on the list, and can't remember anything about it 12 hours later. I don't think I was offended, so I'll save it from one-star status. But it was getting close.

Pretty douchey

It was decent, good background music

I want to like the Beta Band but this is a bit forgettable. Heard it before? ❌ Listen again? ❌ Rating out of ten? 4️⃣

448/1089 don’t think i was totally in love with the other album of theirs that i listened to (hot shots II) so let’s see if i prefer this one. i like this opening track, it’s got a good movement to it and a cool indie vibe okay so i’ve actually really enjoyed this one, i think this might be what I was hoping for from Hot Shots II, it manages to keep the sort of sound i like all the way through it’s a mood! i’m pleasantly surprised faves: Assessment, Lion Thief, Simple, Pure For 82/100

Interesting, pretty cool

Liked it. Had only heard dry the rain before

This was enjoyable. I don’t remember anything about the other of their albums I listened to with this, but I feel like this was probably better. Nothing remarkable, but enjoyable all the same. 3.5/5

Decent indie, not sure why it "had to" be on the list.

One of my favourite bands. It is a masterpiece.

Painfully bland. 2/5

I don't think this album is as good as the other Hot Shots II, which I've had previously.

don’t judge a book by its cover bc I hate this cover but like this album It sounds nothing like this cover looks

Track By Track Assessment - The lyrics were actually quite potent here as I had quite the day of lessons learned. The music reminds me of an early Biffy Clyro middle-eight. Decent tune here. Very good lyrics. It has an almost grungy feel to it. A darkness. Not quite what I was expecting given the album artwork! Space - A dark groove, moody. This sounds like music on the fringes almost. It’s like they’re concerned with the concepts here, not the hit-making necessarily. Sounds like it’s inspired by prog rock a little. Lion Thief - Slightly unsettling song with dark lyrics. Quite nice guitar happening. Easy - This reminds me a lot of Badly Drawn Boy. Got that loose, yet also tight rhythm. A good bluesy jam. Wonderful - This displays their range quite well. This is like a lazy Sunday Velvet Underground song. Sweet, dreamy, almost druggy, laid back. The bubble noises do feel quite cartoony. Troubles - This sounds like a prog rock break or something as part of a concept album. It’s got a slightly cinematic spacey feel to me. Weird one. Did not love particularly. Out-Side - I didn’t like the dog barking. It’s a bit trashy mid, this one. Guitar was ok though. Space Beatle - The drone in this is a little dreary I found. It does have hints of Beatles influence peppered and woven throughout this album, not just on this track as well. Also a little of Radiohead I’d say. Rhododendron - Quite a sweet little interlude. Playing around with synths, feels fairly spontaneous. Pretty. Liquid Bird - This was a crap beginning. Noisy, bad. Song was alright, kaleidoscopic as the album cover. Simple - Listening on a Tuesday. Sort of folk-electronica. Can hear bits of Beck as well on this. But that may also be power of suggestion as Lost Cause was on auto play. Alright music, quite nice strings. Pure For - Leaning more into the spacey electronica for the ending. Can hear some Scottish inflections on this as well. Overall Review: This was a very surprising and intriguing album. I hadn’t heard of these guys before. The songs seem weirdly incongruent with the album art, except for a few songs towards the end. But the title seems apt though. Darkness pervades so much of it. It’s almost dystopian. Also very wide-ranging which I respected. Lyrics were great and perhaps some of the best I’ve heard so far. Not on all tracks, but some. Gains points for this. 2.7/5 Favourite Songs: Assessment, Easy, Rhododendron

another one?

Beta bland more like, utterly forgettable.

I thought this was kind of interesting when I started listening to it. Then I realized that my standards have decreased the more I listen day to day to mostly music I consider boring to bad with very occasional gems. I don’t know if it’s a good idea to put myself through this for another 619 albums most of which I will likely consider shit. Self flagellation is never a good idea.

Out of the three Beta Band albums on this list, this one is my least favourite. It's feels the least experimental and ambitious, and more like they were settling into a certain style. Im still happy to have listened through these guys' short discography but I'm.not likely to dig out this albums specifically.

I’m not sure the Beta Band really deserves a second spot on a list of 1001 albums to hear before you die, but I did enjoy this album more than Hot Shots II. I enjoyed it quite a bit actually. Feels kind of like a mix of Beck, the Flaming Lips, and Animal Collective. I guess if I were to pick one Beta Band album for this list with my very limited experience and knowledge of the band, it’d be this one.

This was fine. Not much to dislike. Not sure I was blown away. Interesting their most streamed songs on Spotify aren’t on this. So middle of the road is a 2.5 but I think I have to round down since I likely won’t revisit.

The Beta Band? Should have gone with The Cuck Band. JK. I actually thought this was pretty good. 3.25/5

Vollkommen belanglos!

Remember that scene from High Fidelity where John Cusack said he was going to sell five copies of their three LPs by playing a song or whatever? That song didn't sell me and neither did this album.

Groovy, funky, laid back and chilled are just a few words to describe this. Don’t let any tunnelled visioned narrow minded murican tell you otherwise.

Þetta er alveg solid plata. Skil ekki vælið hérna. Þetta er samt bara þristur.

Ágætis stöff frá St. Andrew

Previously familiar with the hit ("Dry the Rain") only; underwhelmed here.

Didn’t really understand this one

Reminds me of Caribou. Or maybe the other way around.

Not spectacular but a nice listen. Some good spots, but plenty of dead space.

I like the beta band but this is a little weaker than their other stuff especially the 3 eps, but still good fun 3.5

Bara nokkuð næs.

Favorite track(s): "Well this album Hot Shots II was really boring," I said to myself on February 14th, 2026. "Good thing I'll never have to listen to that band again."

Very bland and boring!

Snoozefest

616/1089 - It's music

This is one of those 3’s I give that makes me wish I can go back and give a whole bunch of other ones 4’s.

Kinda cool, pretty forgettable. I like the vocals.

Really not a fan of the album cover here. Because of it, I was expecting less of this album, which is probably a good thing since it doesn't have much to offer. The songs are OK, but blend into the background easily and have few internal dynamics or captivating melodies that help make the songs stand out. A low 3/5. βββ

I listened to this with headphones which isn’t how I normally do my daily album and I think that gave me a totally different experience so I may need to change my ways. I found myself enjoying this a lot more with headphones. But I’m still not sure I’d return to it or think it warrants being on this list.

What a boring ass album. The very last track got stuck in my head for like 5 minutes after it ended, and now I can't even remember the lyrics 30 minutes later lol. Lasting impression it does not provide

This album started ok but then got really boring for me, it wasn’t really innovative or brought anything new

Never heard of this group. 3.5 rounded down.

I forgot I listened to this not long after listening. It's okay.

Not bad, but I think I in forgot already whether or not I liked this.

I remember liking these guys more the first time around

Mostly an absolute slog. There's only one maybe two half-decent songs here. I'm sure its great if you've had a couple beamers however.

This feels inspired and yet so uninspired. Most of these aren't really songs, at least not ones I'd want to listen to more than once. Total miss from the judging panel here. Finished out of sheer stubborness.

More of an alpha band guy

only ever listened to the three EPs comp which is really awesome. This was less exciting and I was really embarrassed to listen to it in public due to the god awful album art.

Overall: 4/10 Not super enjoyable. I liked the slower songs but the faster paced stuff didn't do much for me. I found this bland, boring and forgettable. Fav Song: Lion Thief

Nice mix of electronic sounds and guitars. Quite loose but it works.

It's alright

Interesting cover art. I thought it would be a soundtrack for a cartoon or something based on that, but it turned out to be a pretty chill rock album.

Just another unremarkable UK Band on a list that is becoming more and more tiresome in its pandering to the UK music scene (which has essentially been trash for 40 years or so). It didn’t make me vomit so plus 1 for that.

No me ha interesado mucho

From what I can tell, The Beta Band was an interesting experimental/psychedelic/electronic/pop/rock thing in the '90s, before making increasingly less interesting music. As such, Heroes To Zeros, the last album of their original run, is not especially interesting. But it is *occasionally* interesting, which is something. This is kind of just an electronic flavored rock album, which contains a mix of good, bad, and bizarre decisions (these categories are not necessarily mutually exclusive). But there is enough to be at east somewhat engaging, but I really can't formulate an argument for this being exceptional. I would like to note Liquid Bird as an exception though. The only *really* good song here, Liquid Birds contains like 3 excellent hooks, interesting audio experiments and a prominent Siouxsie And The Banshees sample. All in all, there are saving graces here, but I don't know if I need to give this repeat full listens.

I’ve disliked albums more. But this is such an unbelievably pointless addition to the list.

Pretty interesting album. It sounds a lot like the alt rock bands that would bubble up a decade later, like Django Django. Some cool soundscapes overlaid with their whisper singing. I liked a lot of the album, it's easy listening to get lost in. Look Thief was probably my favorite here. It's a unique sound, though not my favorite for extended periods. A lot of it is similar to itself by the end, but it's still a fun listen.

This album is interesting. It’s such a good crop of tracks, and after having listened twice today, I can say that each track seems like it has a lot to offer sonically. No bad songs here. It’s very clearly obvious how these guys were favorites of Radiohead and Oasis. The problem here is that they aren’t kind of a jack of all trades, master of none. Each song has its own style and I loved it, but there are better outfits that I would always turn to over these guys. I wanna give them a higher score, but I don’t imagine myself returning to these guys very often. Also, this album cover makes me want to expect less from the album. It does not match the results, and I think it’s tainting my thoughts

Absolutely dreadful. Just a miserable listen front to back. It’s amazing how much British bullshit is on this list.

Removed Album #42 (List: https://pastebin.com/cSThNiK9) From the Vault #42 (March 15, 2026) Cool! Beta Band. I posted on the Internet about how much I liked the Amnesiac B-Sides one time and someone recommended that I check out this band, specifically their debut album. Needless to say, I went straight to this website to see if The Beta Band had any albums in the book, and it turns out they did. For that reason, I decided not to entertain their recommendation and instead waited over a year before finally giving this album of theirs a listen. Very considerate, I know. Despite there being an apparent overlap between this band and Radiohead, I'm not entirely sure what to expect. It's likely an alt-rock album with an artsy, self-depricating style if this album cover and name are anything to go by. In any case, I'm looking forward to it. Huh, interesting. Not gonna lie, this band name is appropriate - the music sounds like it's in an open beta. The potential of this album is definitely there. There are a lot of solid chord progressions and the wide spread of instruments are put to good use, but something major is missing from these tracks. The songwriting is generally flimsy. Most of these songs are built around repetition with the exact same vocal delivery across each track. The performances aren't much to write home about, either. Mason's singing doesn't add much presence or charisma to these songs. While I do think the instrumentals are the strongest aspect of this album for the reasons I mentioned earlier, many of them feel a bit too busy. It's difficult to pin down what makes these songs feel so overencumbered, but if I were to make a guess I'd hedge my bets on the electric guitar. It's quite good on the songs where it takes a leading role, but it feels a little unnecessary on the more atmospheric, relaxed offerings of this album. All that being said, I did appreciate this album. The style is definitely up my alley, and for that reason I feel the need to be more discerning and critical of this album. It's ultimately good, relaxing fun - it just feels a little more hollow than I would have hoped. This album was, tragically, removed from the list. Their other album, "Hot Shots II" was also pulled, which decisively makes this band of betas one of the least essential musicians on the list, and it's my duty to figure out why. Let's see. Included in the original 1001 lineup and pulled from the 2008 revision of the book. The book entry says that this album was "Eclectic, enigmatic, and contrary" and was the band's final release before they broke up. The Beta Band were critically acclaimed, but commercially unsuccessful. It was "...their most cohesive work" and merges many different styles and influences together. Wikipedia says this album had a modest reaction from critics, but that's about it. Well, it's pretty obvious why this album was removed. A lack of prominence claims another victim. In any case, I respect this album. I thought it was pretty alright, and I need to play my cards carefully with which albums I replace. For these reasons, I'm saving it. I cosign this inclusion. ================== Hey! Me from the present here. I'm pleased to announce that I've become the beta fan in the time since first listening to this album. I assembled a pre-written review for "Hot Shots II" shortly after listening to this album as it was also removed from later editions of the book. That album was really good! Huge fan of the spacy, echoing ambience and charmingly Scottish vocals. The Beta Band also played their first-ever tour here in Australia at the beginning of May, which I went to see. They sadly didn't play "Quiet" off of Hot Shots II (my favourite song of theirs) though they were an impressive live act all the same. It was fun to watch them move between all of the different instruments while they were performing their songs, and I was particularly fond of their performance of "It's Not Too Beautiful" off their debut album. That felt like a bit of a deep cut. I'm tempted to bump this up to a 4 from my initial 3/5 rating, though truth be told I'm a little split on this album. The strait-laced, rock-oriented first half of this album kind of drags and isn't particularly impressive, though it becomes leagues better during the second half when it co-opts the subdued, almost kraut-rocky sound from Hot Shots II. Y'know what? Someone needs to be in the corner of these guys, and I'm happy for that to be me. 4/5 it is.

Odd that a band whose total output amounted to only 3 albums should nevertheless have two of those on this list. Particularly when they never achieved any great notoriety when a working band or held in general high ragard. Putting that to one side I have liked this album and the other one on the list so maybe I am attuned to the makers of the list than my average rating of 2.63 indicates. Probably all down to their Radiohead and Nigel Godrich connections I suspect. 4/5 15/9/26

Something familiar-sounding about this early aught calm, psych-rock. Def 3.5, maybe 4.0/5.0, I could listen to this again/more of their stuff
