Blur

Well, Song 2 I've heard before. I would have guessed this was Weezer maybe based on that song alone. This feels like the 90s. The album as a whole has some bad songs on it but I clearly am not the target demo for this. As of this album, I'm instituting my rating system as follows: 1*: terrible, no redeeming value that I could find, or just not my thing at all. 2*: I can see the reason this is on the list, it's well produced or influential or whatever, but I can't imagine listening again. 3*: this is OK. I might listen again if it came up in a random playlist. Or, I don't like it but it has extremely good productions or is hugely influential or something. 4*: I like this. I would listen again. Good music. 5*: This is amazing and is now in semi-regular rotation. Changed the way I listen/taught me something/cured major disease.

No 2 always good

not my favourite style of music but a couple of bangers in there. the lead singers voice is really charismatic. it has a certain feel to it, like its rough around the edges but thats what gives it character and this album was a very welcome change of pace compared to all the over produced stuff out right now. feels like im listening to them in a bar live. standout tracks:beetlebum,song2,on your own, death of a party

This is the breakup album, right? Not that it should be anthropomorphised to one person's unhappiness, obvs. (Later) No it isn’t. Apropos of nothing, time for a self-clarification of this wretched star system. Five stars. Indispensable. It is a privilege to be (re)acquainted with this masterpiece. Will be downloaded onto my device and listened to regularly. Four Star. A fine album. My impressions may be tainted by subjective memory muscle responses (on the whole, albums released between 1985 and 1999). At the least, a prompt to explore the artist/band’s back catalogue, get a sense of context. Or an excuse to wallow in nostalgia for a bit. Three Star. Serviceable. At the worst inoffensive, at the best well made but ephemeral. Every so often, a song or two give cause for closer consideration, but on the whole nothing here that will change any aspect of my life. Two Star. Poor/cynical/unformed. Like most music, it will mean something g to someone somewhere. I’m not that person One Star. Mum got her church group to buy a copy each. You know the Brian Eno anecdote about the Velvet Underground? Well, whoever made this album went to a Kenny G concert and was similarly moved. Poor us. Blur is a four star, even though objectively I think it might be a three. It was a big break from Britpop. In retrospect, they did a Radiohead before Radiohead. (Alburn, who is one of the most curious people in pop - a compliment) was all over Pavement and Dinosaur Jr. at the time.) Aside from the radio ‘friendly’ unit shifters here, some underrated classics (Strange News from Another Star - Bowie for the 21st cen., anyone?) Blur don’t deserve the opprobrium heaped on them. Yes, they were (are) precious. But never opportunistic.

Country Sad Ballad Man and Song 2 are great. I like Blur....just not all the time.

Didn't realize that blur had more than "song 2" lost me a bit at the end, but overall a good experience

This album was heavily promoted and toured so it's no wonder why they chose to place this Blur album on the list. However, there are other, read BETTER, albums by this band and I'm not even a big fan. Song 2 is most notoriously used pretty much whenever your favorite team scores a goal or cuts to a commercial break, but even then it's only about a three second blip. Some may not know that this was originally used in the blockbuster (I use that term loosely) epic Starship Troopers. Listening to this more than twenty years later, the album is a chore to get through, even Look Inside America, the song that IMO was underutilized on the airwaves lacks luster today. To make matters worse, the 'special edition' which is hard to avoid on Spotify includes more than two hours of material. It burns a little to say, but even with some background on the band, it's difficult to get into this album. The long drawn out repetitions and the lyrics delivered with phone-it-in laziness is a huge turn off. The success of this album relies too heavily on the fans of previous work. I can't imagine what it's like listening to this for the first time. Hugely disappointing.

Just ok. Nothing special. "Song 2" holds up well, though it has been overplayed and overused over the years. But nothing else really stood out. Several songs were standard, perhaps even boring Britpop. What was most interesting about the album was how many hints of the Gorillaz's sound that could be found here. That got me thinking about Gorillaz, and how Damon Albarn's music evolved from early Blur, to this album, to the Gorillaz. So then I looked to see what Gorillaz album or albums were on the 1001 list. There are no Gorillaz albums on the list!!! What!? Their debut used to be on the list, but was removed in more recent editions. Gorillaz were refreshing and interesting and even groundbreaking. Every other British album ever made is on the list, so why not Gorillaz? I can't decide whether to dock this album a star (from a baseline of 3) due to my anger at the list, or to give at extra star because that first Gorillaz album is a 4 or 5 start album and I have nowhere to rate it.

Oh Blur, there are some moments where I like the music and then you go and ruin it with something I actively dislike. You could be so much better.

I heard Song 2 a bunch in college. I’m pretty sure until today it’s the only Blur song I’ve ever heard. I now know why it’s called Song 2, which shouldn’t have been tough to figure if I had thought about it. There really isn’t much else exciting on here other than On Your Own. Apparently the band changed musical styles somewhat on this album and became “more aggressive.” There is not very much aggressive about this album to me. The ambling Essex Dogs is almost interesting except for the spoken word delivery (boring!) and being way too long.

The 90s feel, which I like, doesn't counteract the absolute ass vocals which are creaky and sound like they're being sung through a dehydrated hangover.

After I wrote in my review of Parklife a week or so ago that Blur was the 90s version of XTC, I found out that the band actually sought out XTC front man Andy Partridge to produce Modern Rubbish, the album preceding Parklife, so apparently that was what they were going for. Yuck. Supposedly, their self-titled album was Blur's attempt to break away from the Britpop style they pioneered after the genre imploded. The result is reminiscent of a chameleon changing colors. Blur is the same creature as it always was underneath, but on Blur (1997), it's taken on the protective coloration of Indie rock's stylistic quirks, i.e. grungy guitars, noise experiments a la Sonic Youth, Stephen Malkmus' vocal yelps, Pavement's deconstructive strategies, warped electronics, et al. This could be read as a cynical strategy to stay relevant, and it probably was, but damned if they don't do a convincing job of it, making the cloying Britpop at the core of their sound more palatable. Unfortunately, the most thorough transformations are front loaded, so as the album grinds on, Blue reverts to its shallow, twee Britpop roots. Look, there's a lot of craft and skill on display here, but it's in the service of what is ultimately a pretty vacuous take on British pop. You can polish a turd to a high gloss, but well, you know what I mean.

Alright album that has a few good songs. Song 2 is well known and a good hit and wish more of the album was like that. Some of the other songs fell flat and felt boring. 5.6/10

Damon building up to his creative peak but already at his prettiness peak.

(4.5) Blur have been one of my favourite bands since I was a teenager, so this album was always going to rank highly. Despite containing some of my favourite Blur songs on the tracklisting (Beetlebum, You're So Great), it's one of those albums I've revisited less than others. This has meant that I'm less familiar with its second half especially, missing gems like Look Inside America and Movin' On, so I'm thrilled to have rediscovered them with fresh ears today. Not for the first time, and far from the last time I'm sure, I find myself weak at the knees for Damon.

This album is great. Beetlebum and Song 2 are absolute fire. Also great hits like M.O.R. and Chinese Bombs. Looking at some of my other ratings, I don't think this reaches "perfect album" levels of greatness, but I do love this album a lot and probably listen to it just as much if not more than albums I consider "perfect."

This album came out the same week as Pavement's Brighten the corners. The two best indie albums of the decade in my view, and both share a sonic signature. It was definitely Pavement influencing Blur rather than the other way around, but it doesn't matter. This is my favourite Blur album by a country mile, and just edges Pulp's "a different class" for best britpop album

Another overall disappointing album from Blur. But it does have Song 2 (and to a lesser extent, Beetlebum and On Your Own) on it. Like the other Blur records on this list, beyond the singles it is pretty forgettable. 2.5/5 (a bonus 0.5 for Song 2).

Outside of the one hit, I didn't vibe with much of this

Only Beetlebum and Song 2 jump out from the track list. Noticably longer after the short and sweet stones album with more filler.

Song 2 was probably once good but now reduced to nothing from overexposure. Pretty annoying voice. Silly. Better than I anticipated.

Song 2 (perhaps the best song) is dissonant vaudeville halfway between Rolling Stones and Sonic Youth. Their traditional melodic sound is delegated to fringe compositions like Strange News From Another Star and Look Inside America. (6/10) Favourite Track: Song 2

All right, this is the third Blur album in 131 albums. This is some serious over-representation on the part of this band and Brit-pop in general, a genre that was only a factor for a small handful of years in the 90s and barely a blip on the overall landscape of music, making me thing that there is a bit too strong of an Anglocentric slant on this list. As far as the album itself, it's probably the best of the three Blur albums on the list (so far... I wouldn't put it past the authors to include the band's entire damn discography), but that isn't saying too much. As I previously noted, Blur feels more and more like a singles band with each new album I hear with not much to say in regards to the deep cuts. Still, the band is better than their contemporaries and rivals, Oasis, so there's that.

The songs here feel full (seemingly two of them packed into the opener, fitting together) while the tracklist avoids bloat. There's lots of sonic variety (I hear chickens, squeaks, swirly digital whoops, many a subgenre reference) in a framework that works well enough for commercials. I'm very glad I glanced at reviews, because "slacker" is the perfect descriptor for the project. Energy levels fluctuate nicely, but the interest level is not-quite-there in the distance recorded music allows for. It's Britpop with plenty of jangle; Could use a little more jingle to sound less demo-y at the back. Great electric guitars.

In the middle of all the industrial noise, there is music that is actually quite good. It will be a four.

3.5/5. Good, unexpected. Usually, with this genre I feel it's hard to listen to, however, this album was rather enjoyable. 'Song 2' is definitly the most popular off this album.

Woo hoo! All I knew about this album prior to listening was Song 2, and it set me up for disappointment. Genre hopping is fun and all, but none of the journeys went anywhere particularly good...

A cool and mellow sound with notes of punk and darker energy. This was a good album.

Again, mediocre, maybe eventually I’ll get the hang of this.

Sometimes I think I might like Blur more than Oasis. This isn't something I'm only saying to make the Gallaghers feel bad (although hey, what a nice bonus). I really only knew of Blur before this album showed up on my feed because of Song 2, and even then, it was just because it was overplayed during dull moments of Nebraska Football games. This album made me question why Blur didn't have the success Oasis did in America. Aside from "Wonderwall", I'm not sure Oasis did anything as interesting as this album, although I haven't had a chance to deep dive into the Gallagher Brothers' work outside of their hits. It could just be that I have a perverse appreciation for songs about heroin. The first half of this album is 100 percent perfect, but the second half is a hard pass, so much so that it almost kills all of the goodwill the first half generated (I had a difficult time getting through the last song). There are moments on this album when Blur is trying just a little too hard to be interesting. Sometimes it works. Other times it makes me want to listen to Pavement.

fuck, do i hate that song. though, weirdly, the rest of the album is actually pretty good. never thought i'd say that about blur, but here we are.

First listen. Knew the one song, "Song 2" The rest seems pretty good. Like to hear more of it.

I prefer Parklife. But Beetlebum is great.

The album combines Blur's Brit Pop sensibilities with the grunge sound of Nirvana. At times, it works for me, other times not so much. Obviously a lot of people know this album thanks to "Song 2" but that one is vastly different from the rest of the album.

Kind of surprised their 1997 album is on here. To me, if there is an absolute must Blur album to listen to it's 1994's Parklife or 1995's The Great Escape. Still, it's Blur's last great album. Beetlebum is a good opener despite being a little unusual in its sound and mixes. Song 2 obviously brings down the house every time but it's pretty unique for Blur. I guess they have some other pounding rock songs like MOR and Chinese Bombs, but more typical of their style are tracks 3, 5, 6, 11. And no Blur album would be complete without something like Essex Dogs (featuring more Damon Albarn speak than singing) - although I could do without it. You're so Great (track 7) feels more like one the Gallagher brothers would've recorded - but still a good tune.

I only knew one song from this album going in (Song 2) which I'd never really been a fan of but was pleasantly surprised by most of the rest of the album. There seem to be a lot of different ideas going on here. Favorite tracks: M.O.R, Death of a Party, I'm Just a Killer for Your Love, Strange news from Another Star.

Here's another band I've heard of but (thought I) hadn't heard. Loved the first track Beetlebum. Then Song 2 started and I realized "of course I've heard this." I never knew this was the song name (and band) for the "whoo hoo" song. It's interesting how significantly the style changes between songs. Beetlebum is hugely different from Song 2 and both are different than Country Sad Ballad Man (although the Nirvana influence seems pretty evidence in both of the two latter songs).  Then M.O.R. sounds like it could fit with Roxy Music (although this changes later in the song). These guys are all over the place, but I'm mostly enjoying this (Chinese Bombs is a bit of noise, but then I'm Just a Killer for Your Love sounds pretty cool). I'd rate it higher, but I'm having a problem because I have no idea what this band is supposed to be. They are seriously all over the place stylistically. Kudos for variety, but as the Who would sing..."Who are you?"

OK, I listened to it. There was noise. I guess I liked the noise at the time. Feels a lot like another band called Pavement, if I were to go and not listen to anything by Blur ever again I am sure I'd be just fine and would probably forget that they existed.

Kind of boring honestly, and when it wasn't it was just irritating.

Bit of nostalgia talking here, because I was super hyped for this album at the time. In retrospect some of - including the lead single - is kinda dull, but the good bits are still good enough.

Blur's eponymous record starts off very well with Beetlebum, an emotional and blisfully sexy tune filled with catchy guitar riffs, which is one of Blur's absolute best. The second track, Song 2, carries just the right amount of edge and raunchy vocals to make it a staple in the genre. However, the rest of the album can only disappoint after these 2. Disappointment is at its peak when I consider the awkward sound effects and distorted vocals on Country Sad, the annoying On Your Own, the seemingly unfinished Theme from Retro and the almost voiceless vocals on I'm Just a Killer. The distorted guitars on M.O.R, the ascending chorus on You're So Great, the ghostly piano's and guitar riffs on Death of Party are terrific though, so a 4/5 is definitely a fitting score.

some version of britpop, i like the style and there are some good songs, and some classics (song 2) i really like the band and the distortion style

Beetlebum is probably Blur’s finest moment and one of the best songs of the decade. The stabbing guitar, liquid bass line, heavy drum sound playing over the outro is sublime. Song 2 will always be a classic, thrilling track. But for me the rest of the album just doesn’t hold up. I like that they moved in a different direction and the intent with sonic experimentation was fine but it just doesn’t work overall. Some songs rip off Pavement; some rip off Bowie; some rip off old Blur (Look Inside America is a slowed down Country House!). And Damon … as a frontman, I’ve never been convinced he’s enjoying being a rock star. There’s an archness, a distance, a sneer in his lyrics and vocals that at times disconnects me from the music. He’s singing songs about his observances of life around him; he’s at his best when he’s singing from the heart. I want to like this album more but it’s not for me.

Listened to this first time since my mid-late teens. It's been a struggle to not skip certain songs. Based solely on this album - I don't enjoy Blur. Don't have any songs I've enjoyed listening to either, it all seemed like white noise to me.

More abstract than I expected. Song 2 is obviously a classic, but the rest of the album is definitely underrated. Not quite my cup the whole way through, and a little too punky/indie. But still solid overall. 3.5/5

Another in the long list of bands whose name I know but know very little of their work (yes, I know, a major benefit of this whole 1001 Albums project is I am finally getting 'round to hearing all these bands!). 'Song 2' is familiar to me now that I hear it again, and I really like it. Great energy and fun. I like most of these tracks. Some really cool guitar work going on here. Nice.

A solid recommendation. This album is loud, gritty, and high energy. I loved the roaring guitar melodies and Damon Albarns vocals fit in with this band just as well as in Gorillaz. Top notch. Favorite song: Chinese Bombs

I love that one song. A saw a post where a guy was saying that Blur is really good but everyone only knows the one song but I kind of disagree with him.

I was hoping that not the whole album would be as annoying as the obnoxious "Song 2". That hope didn't come true. It's chaotic, noisy, senseless and really pretty much without redeeming qualities. I gave up halfway through the fifth track.

Britpop goes Rock. Song2 würde bei FIFA 98 und auf den Scheunenparties totgedudelt und gefällt trotzdem irgendwie noch. Man hört die 90er aber eines der zeitloseren Rockalben der Zeit.

Tja Blur, vroeger vond ik het niks, teveel Britpop. Nu vond ik het wel een keer lekker om te luisteren, leuke rare uitschieter met Chinese Bombs, lekkere klassieker met Song 2. Kortom een ruime voldoende.

Mja, ik was toch meer van Oasis in die tijd. Hoewel ik het bij Gorillaz minder storend vind, trek ik die stem van Albarn hier toch minder goed. Song 2 ken ik natuurlijk maar dat is het dan ook wel.

Mijn favoriete Blur album! Hier kwamen ze echt los van dat 'Britpop' stempel en kwam er veel meer diepgang en experiment in de muziek. Erg fijne plaat.

My favourite Blur album for lots of reasons. So many good tunes on here that turned my attention away from Oasis and towards Blur. Beetlebum is probably my favourite Blur song if I were to think about it, and it sets the tone for the whole album. Can’t give it anything other than 5 stars.

Such a varied album. Psychedelic moments, electronic elements, straight up acoustic songwriting, rock, punk, hiphop beats, fun singalong vibes but also some slightly more challenging/experimental songs. This is why Blur are one of the best British bands of all time and why this album is one of their finest. It also resonated heavily in the US and is a favourite of the band themselves. 10/10

Els Blur sempre m'han semblat un grup de bons singles, però d'àlbums més aviat discrets. Aquest cinquè disc no n'és una excepció. Va ser el més exitós de la seva carrera, en bona part gràcies als dos temes inicials, "Beetlebum" i sobretot "Song 2". El primer és per mi una de les seves millors cançons, em sembla molt inspirada i en el seu moment va resulta sorprenent venint d'ells. En tot cas, un cop passada la sorpresa inicials d'aquestes dues composicions inicials, el disc cau en picat i no aconsegueix remuntar el vol. S'agraeix l'intent de dotar de més protagonisme a les guitarres, inspirant-se en el rock independent dels EEUU, però l'àlbum es fa llarg i molt, molt pesat, com gairebé sempre em passa amb ells. Si no fos pels dos primers temes, seria un disc oblidable.

Rock alternativo. Un megahit.

Interesting find. Everyone has heard Song 2, but got the memory jogged hearing M.O.R.. Enjoyed On Your Own and will listen to Essex Dogs a few more times to form an opinion.

First 5 star. Forgot how good this album was. Years ago, always on the oasis side of the blur Vs oasis arguement. Oasis didn't have an album as good as this

Solid Brit pop rock album with some unique stuff, obviously created by strong musicians. Doesn’t have as nostalgic a vibe for me as similar records from that time period, which might skew my option slightly more negative. 3.3

This is an iconic album that really goes all over the place. Song 2 is such a big one for me personally and a specific time in my life. I’m biased, but aren’t we all?

I've always wanted to enjoy this album a lot more than I do, and I know I should rate it higher. "Song #2" is of course a blast. Much of the record is good-ish and seems like it would be something I enjoy, but I get a bit impatient with the songs partway through most of them.

I listen to this and feel nothing. Strange, cuz I really enjoy their other work.

I like this album, and I went through a "Blur phase" in probably late high school/ early college. I don't love all the songs on this album but some of them I really do, like "Beetlebum" "Song 2" "Killer for Your Love" and perhaps "Look Inside America" & "Strange News from Another Star." "Essex Dogs" too, I forgot about that song. This, as with all Blur albums, struggles as a whole for me. I prefer Damon Albarn's other projects more - Gorillaz, The Good The Bad and the Queen, and his solo stuff.

Song 2.0 is amazing, but everythng else.... meh

Quite generic songs, poor tracklist arrangement. The whole album went by like a blur :P

Some interesting tracks

Just what I needed to hear right now. Sounds like they are really having fun in the studio with this one. Love how Blur can be kind of all over the place soundwise and yet it still feels like a cohesive album. Like it could be a soundtrack to a movie, having to cover this whole broad range of moods/emotions/tones for different scenes. Something to aspire to in my opinion. To me, in the 90s (and only in the 90s), Blur is the silver to Radiohead's gold in the arena of British rock music. And while I do think Radiohead is ultimately the greater band on many levels, I feel Blur is somewhat more versatile and that counts for something. Listened to special edition with bonus tracks.

Blur is a band I've only heard a few songs of but always wanted to dig a bit deeper into. Song 2 I've heard a ton of, it sounds so 90s and captures that Nirvana-esque angst. I heard the rest of their stuff is a bit different, and so far I'm liking it! Some really cool guitar stuff on this album too. Like that stuttery-effect on M.O.R. and the glitch guitar on On Your Own. I also like the singalong/gang vocals a lot. Reminds me a bit of some of our RCE energy actually. "Movin' On" 2:42 sounds just like the Atari Punk Console from our songs! It might be a super fuzzed out guitar though, hard to know! "Essex Dogs" intro with the drums coming in is siiick. It has the same Hot Team synth glide! This song even has a long freaky guitar part. I love this one. On the Special Edition, some of the b-sides definitely sound jammy like Hot Team do. If Blur used a drum-machine instead of live drums, I think you could make a case that RCE ripped off Blur. This album is just fun energy, but has some interesting technical things going on as well.

Song 2 is amazing, the rest is very meh.

Definitely some hits I've been sleeping on. Love the Gorrilaz, but have only ever listened to surface level blur songs.

Awesome album, really fun to hear, the last song was kinda boring but outside of that, I really enjoyed it. 9/10

Tracks 1& 3 weird noise - meh lyrics. Song 2 - great track, that's why it was so big You're so great, best track yet though trying too hard to give that "old record sound" most of the others it sounds like the guitars were recorded waay too loud. Most songs are just noise, not really structured. maybe was not in the mood for it? Sound more like songs that would be fun to go see live but not on an album

I liked this album, I really didn't expect anything from Blur but they got some good songs.

Good but not really my style

I only knew song 2. The album is surprisingly better than I expected.

Only got a bit into it. Seemed very vanilla.

It's alright but I'll stick to 'The Best of Blur'

10/5 stars. I haven't listened to this album in probably 15 years. Good music like this always reminds me of Megan Robbin, who was my musical awakener. I will be downloading this album on pandora.

I think this is a really interesting record, definitely a precursor to a ton of Gorillaz stuff. Alt Rock, Art Rock, Garage rock, maybe some mild psych rock. Some tracks though that I just don’t care for. Maybe I’d warm up to em with other listens, but for now I’ll call this flawed but very interesting. I will say it’s a very unique sounding album. Doesn’t sound like much else

Starts off amazing for the first few tracks but doesn't keep it up. Shame.

Own. Fave song “Song 2” not much of Blur fan outside the hits.

This album came out when I was getting back into metal. So other than Song #2 I missed it. This was very close to being a 5-star album....the last song wasn't right.

It's not bad, but I feel like quite a few of the songs are parodies or just ripping off other genres. This can be successful (they're great anytime they try grunge) or less than successful ("Country Ballad Sad Man"). It's not bad, I just preferred MLIR. Favorite tracks: "M.O.R.", "Chinese Bombs", "Strange News from Another Star"
