Classic Kinks: always a pleasant listen. I don't deep-dive into their work the same as I do some from that era, but I never regret listening through one of their 1960s albums. "Sunny Afternoon" might be my favorite all-time Kinks song.

While other albums, most notably 1977's Suicide S/T, could be considered more ground-breaking, Unknown Pleasures holds a significant place for its influence while holding up as a fantastic album in its own right. I especially note the songcraft and song variety even while keeping a consistent tone.

Good early glimpse at a legend. While many of the songs aren't particularly memorable, we get a sense of her emerging style as she tried on soul alongside Brill Bldg pop songs.
Kanye has always been a bundle of concepts. When they come together, they REALLY come together, which is the case for roughly 80 percent of this album.
What else can be said? Stunning debut. I enjoyed going back and remembering how much fun this album is.

Back in the day, I found the radio singles ("Come Out and Play" and "Self Esteem") fun but never really explored the album. The band is easy to categorize as pop punk, and some people like to throw the term "metal" into the mix, and to me they sort of blended in alongside quite a few other bands. I'm glad I checked out the whole album, and it was fun to go back and hear those hit songs within their context.
Obviously a standard by one of the giants of the genre.
I've always wanted to enjoy this album a lot more than I do, and I know I should rate it higher. "Song #2" is of course a blast. Much of the record is good-ish and seems like it would be something I enjoy, but I get a bit impatient with the songs partway through most of them.
Chunka chunka chunka chunka!
File under: Worth a listen for historical considerations. I'm not a complete Aerosmith hater. I still remember back in my second year of college, one of my roommates and I decided to buy new cassettes for the 4 hour drive home. We weren't allowed to own or listen to any rock tapes at our college, so we embraced the opportunity to rock out on our way home. He bought Def Leppard; I bought an Aerosmith compilation heavy on the 90s hits. I still listen to those once in a while. I can enjoy a brief list of 70s and early 80s 'smith hits. For a record as a whole, though, this one wears thin pretty quickly for me, especially compared to so many other fantastic mid-70s records.

As much as I love Big Star, I don't listen to this album enough. I enjoy so much about it. In some ways, I really like that this album sees the band getting a little weirder, but that creates some inconsistency and uneven moments...minor complaints for an album I still love.
I hadn't dug into this one yet, so I'm glad for this opportunity. At first listen, I think "Paper" is my favorite track, but I can see "Heaven" taking over next time.
Rundgren is another artist I really need to dig into for a longer time. Whenever I listen to his music, I really like it, and then I forget for another year or so. One of my favorite new-ish bands, the Lemon Twigs, cite him as a major influence. I definitely hear that influence on this record. I'll be sure to revisit this one a few more times this next couple weeks as I can tell it's one that keeps on giving new gems over multiple listens.
