Beetlebum - good production but I’m not sure if I’m going to like this album. His high pitch singing is taking me out of it. Song 2 - ooo I know this one! Party! Country sad ballad man - back to an album that sounds like hs band kids made as a passion project before school Look inside America - this song makes me want to rate the album a 1 Essex dogs - I got nothing out of this song :( It feels unfair to give this a 2 when the production is good, but I just don’t like it and I have to judge within 1001 great albums.

You shouldn't spend more than 2 minutes with Blur. The song “Song 2” is good, but the rest is average.

I’m actually surprised Damon became as successful as he is based on this album. Interesting to read that this album represents a sound change for them. Parklife would be a much better album to include on this list

Parklife was my first album on this project and I had never heard of Blur before but I really liked it. It was so fun. I get they were trying to get in on the grunge sound with this album but I didn't like it

The first two songs were alright. Rest of the album not so much.

Blur always seemed like nondescript background music back in the 90s. Still hit me that way today, 2 + decades later.

Better than Modern Life in Rubbish but still boring. Plus, out of 1,001 albums, I got 2 Blur albums in 3 weeks, even more boring.

i am incredibly grateful for blur because of their contribution to the music world in the form of "song 2," which by itself is fine but covered by big time rush for the absolute banger that is "windows down". but as for the album, it's overdone britpop, the vocals are uninteresting, the music itself is unoriginal. why are we here?

To me Blur is a greatest hits band. They’re good and do the trick for a lot of people but they’re too much of a student band. I like Damon a lot, especially his work outside of Blur. I like Graham a lot, his solo work is fantastic. To say this is an album I have to hear before I die than I’m assuming so where down the line I’m going to have to hear Parklife and Modern Life Is Rubbish as well because they blow this album out of that giant pond between America and England. I have to assume this album is on here to appeal to Americans without passing an album from Blur. Beetlebum is amazing. For me this album is solid but far from their best effort and certainly not something I would push on anyone to listen to before they leave Earth. 4/10 ⭐️⭐️

Meh - inte särskilt intressant åt något håll egentligen.

"Song 2" is iconic but there's some other hits on it like "Look Inside America". Though it was pretty forgettable honestly but didn't mind it.

This went downhill fast. I knew the first two songs and they weren't too bad after a long time since I last heard them. Everything else sucked and just dragged on and on until I lost any waning interest I ever had. I think my take away from this album was "affected". It sounded like a band who had lost any direction they might have once had and were desperately trying to reinvent themselves as alt-rock indie music, but just going through the motions and pretending to be something they definitely never were. Fake music that I didn't enjoy in the slightest. After I read that the band did Song 2 as a joke that went wrong, it dawned on me that the one track I actually half-enjoyed was also fake.

Thoughts before listening: I never really paid much attention to the brit pop bands of the 90s even those that got a lot of press such as Blur. I think this album has Song 2 on it which is a great 90s alt rock single, but most of this album will be new to me. I generally like what I've heard from Blur so I'm sure I'll enjoy this. Review: So this also has Beetlebum on it....and I do love that song. That plus Song 2 make for a pretty great and iconic 90s 1 - 2 punch to start the album out. I am not hearing much else that is drawing me in though. It is all perfectly fine alt-rock, but I don't really get the hype. I am sure if I listened to Blur back in the day I would have massive nostalgia for this album (like I did with the Offspring), but without that reference point this is coming up a bit flat for me. There are some songs that I enjoy like Country Sad Ballad Man, MOR, On Your Own, and the punk sounding Chinese Bombs, but nothing that reaches the heights of those first 2 songs. Those will be the only ones going on the playlist.

Meh. This album wasn't bad, but I really see no reason to return to it. Some highlights for me: Song 2 is of course classic and I wouldn't be surprised if that single track is the only reason the album is on this list. Thanks Nissan and Toyota for popularizing the song. Death of a party sounds like it channels Bowie and is kind of cool—gothic vocals, good guitar distortion and percussion. I'm Just a Killer for Your Love has a nice funk line, but the rest falls apart. The Black Keys seem to dial in that distortion noise better in twenty years. Essex Dogs was kind of cool.

I just can't get into this album. I feel like this is what 60's Brit Pop's natural evolution would be and I hate Brit pop. Song 2 is a bizarre outlier on this album.

An album that I've tried to get into since appreciating Song 2 as a kid. It's still hard to get through, but I'm glad I made it to Essex Dogs this time - I think it may be my favorite song on the album.

Only 1001 albums on this list from the entire history of recorded music and two are Blur? Sure, Jan. Song 2 slaps, but the people who made this list need to check themselves. I kept on thinking the last song would end, but it never did. It was 8 minutes long. Rating 2 stars.

Previous to this recommendation, I only know this artist/album for "Song 2". Currently incomplete listen (at track 7 - "You're So Great"). Very moody, and not really my jam. I feel as though this album only made it to this prestige solely on the merit of "Song 2", which isn't all that far-fetched considering the song's ubiquity, and we are considering the most influential albums here, not necessarily the best. As I write - Track 8 "Death of a Party" is a little bit better than some of the last couple of tracks. We'll see if the second half is enough to lead to me to give the album better than 2 stars. *Morgan Freeman Voice* : The second half, indeed, was not good enough to rate the album over 2 stars.

Ehh, I'm over Britpop. Song 2 still catchy, though.

Beatles opening track, not bad. Never been a fan of song 2. I find the tempo annoying. We got a jaw harp. I'm in the 4th track MOR and thinking is the point of every song to try and be a little annoying. Maybe I'm in a mood. You're so Great is a little more stripped down. Death of a Party felt more mature and put together. Chinease Bombs a punk track, quick and simple. Works. I'm just a killer for your love - you can feel the link to the Gorillaz here Look inside America had a nice arrangement, some unnecessary bits. I picked the wrong time of day to listen to this and I have a head cold. This mostly made me feel old because I felt annoyed.

The music did not do anything for me, would rather be listening to the Gorillaz.

Underwhelming. Sounds like an album for happy prat’s whose parents paid for their college education. Cool guitar tones. Lame chore changes. Trying too hard to be eccentric and unique. Meh. Never understood the hype 🤷‍♂️ lyrics are as blunt as a buried blade. I see it’s merit though and the sound is full. I like the production and sounds more than the songwriting.

Starting tracks are alright but it gets annoying towards the end

I love Song Number 2. Honestly the only song of theirs that I know, so I was very exciting to finally hear the album it was from. I'm writing this review the next day and I honestly struggle to remember any of the other songs. They all blur (heh) together. Nothing else stands out or is even remotely memorable. One song doesn't make an album, but it does save it from a 1 star rating.

Still don't like this band. I just see it as a bad proto-gorillas. Song 2 is the only good track on this album. Much like the other blur albums on this list this was painfully mediocre. A strong 2 to light 3

OMG what a chore to listen to. I get that they were trying to do something different after their wonderful neo-Kinks efforts Parklife and The Great Escape, but this album was a misstep.

2/5. Hard to be excited for brit-pop/rock, especially one I haven't heard before because you can tell they are all borrowing from each other, and not in a good way. It's not bad, but there aren't any great songs on this one. Mostly boring and same attitude of not caring which feels like they care too much. A hard attitude to pull off right.

I thought the rest of the album was meh next to Song 2. I'll give them that it's diverse, but I was zoned out for a lot of this.

Chinese Bombs!

It's cool to hear the precursor to the Gorillaz. I feel like there are small glimpses of the randomness, groove, and grit that are to come with Damon's next musical project (Death of a Party sounds like a Gorillaz song). I feel like there wasn't anything in particular that has resonated with me with this album. I don't think Damon's vocals are the strong suit when I listen to his stuff and the production hasn't wow'ed me, so there hasn't been anything great here. I feel like I'm listening to some Trainspotting/ Jason Statham songs.

Best Song: Song 2. I mean, obviously. Really doesn't even feel like the same band. Worst Song: Look Inside America. An example of this (especially British) era's tendency to focus on singing loud and long more than singing well. Overall: Remarkable how one mega hit can raise the estimation of an entire album or band. Beyond the admittedly quite good "Song 2", the rest is just bland, bouncy shout rock. It feels like music that was designed to be sung loudly by a gaggle of drunk bargoers, and the lead singer had the decency to not even try to outperform them.

Has some cool songs but it's way too incosistent

I really wanted to like this, but it just didn't grab me somehow. Song 2 is a real banger, but can unfortunately not make up for the rest of the album which is quite forgettable in my opinion. Interesting how you can see where some of the "old microphone" effects used a lot in Gorillaz comes from as it's quite prevalent here as well. Unfortunately this album has pretty much cemented that I really much prefer Gorillaz to Blur.

That's it, I'm officially tired of 90s britpop, i know this was their step away from the genre but still. Not much to say about this one. Song 2 is good the rest was kinda meh.

75% of this album’s vocals and instrumentals sounded like a once awkward, prepubescent teen who developed fresh confidence after growing 6 inches over the summer, yet failed to impress the popular girl upon arriving back at school because he’s a late bloomer and his voice is still playing catch-up. What I’m trying to say is this album had some real highs—“Beetlebum” is fantastic and “Strange News from Another Star” more than pleasantly surprised me. But sorry luv, I need the complete package deal if you really want to impress me, because even your angst and newfound defiance towards authority won’t cut it.

Beetle Bum was okay, sounded catchy but nothing crazy give that a 3. Really liked Country Sad Ballad Man - 4. But then from M.O.R. to Movin’ On nothing grabbed my attention and I didn’t like most of it. Essex Dogs is a 5 though no doubt about it. Oh also Song 2 is so fucking corny

C+ Beetlebum - 4 Song 2 - 5, it may be corny to some listeners, but this song is entangled with soccer culture, as one of the most memorable FIFA songs of all time. On the day it was chosen for us, I saw it and was somewhat excited. I knew the hits but I was curious for more. It didn't give much more, but its better than these wingbats (woofmeow and Connor Clapton) have said.

Highlights: "Song 2," "M.O.R.," "Death of a Party," "Chinese Bombs," "Strange News from Another Star" The big contradiction of this album: if the guitar is so explosively noisy on this album, beyond New Wave or "Post-Punk" influences and on par with '00s-'10s garage, full of splattered oscillation and warping modulation, then why does it feel so sleepy? Is it because it's hung up on tired Bowie jam cadences? Is it because Albarn's laconic voice is mixed above anything and everything? Excessive runtime diluting the exciting solos and opening hooks that never reappear? Not sure, but except for its hit single, even at its best, this album drags. Maybe the band's stylistic compromise was a good idea, but that alone wouldn't make this a strong or influential album so late in the development of both alt/grunge and Britpop.

While fun and energetic at points, Blur seems to lose a cohesive idea for their sound across this record. Highlights: Beetlebum, Song 2 Lowlights: Country Ballad Sad Man, Chinese Bombs

I love the iconoclastic attitude, and liked the songs that evoked Bowie, but I mostly found this album to be work to get through.

Preferred Blur when they wrote songs. Did nobody tell them grunge died three years previously?

I liked "Beetlebum" and "Song 2" was recognizable, but never a favorite of mine. Blur sounded well-recorded, and the band used some interesting devices for sound effects on the later tracks. Echo effects and strange sounds made the listen both interesting and fatiguing for the long-listen.

This collection clearly leans towards a preference for 90's britpop. It's fine. Doesn't exactly move me in any way. I like Damon Albarn's career as a whole. This just ain't memorable to me.

I am pretty critical of bands with multiple albums on the list. Not sure if I get anything out of this I don't get from Parklife. Probably could have died without listening to it.

It wasn’t unbearable but I did not like the album as a whole. Beetlebum and strange news from another star are the two standout tracks for me. I will have to listen to more of their discography based on those two songs.

Damon Albarn has a great voice but I prefer his latter day material with the Gorrilaz. I must also admit that I'm getting annoyed with all the Brit-pop on this list, so this will probably unduly influence my rating of this album. Beetlebum is a good opener and Song 2 undeniably has a catchy hook, but the rest of the album doesn't grab my interest at all.

Crapola. Picture yourself in the 90s, the neo-British invasion in full swing, only so much oasis you can take, and here comes the anti-oasis, and there is a used cd of the British band who created one of the most iconic rockin songs ever, and you are like, yeah, $5 for more music that sounds just like that song, count me in!!! This would not be the last time such happened to me, and I hereby condemn all artists who similarly tricked me.

A brit-pop band I never could get into. It's in keeping with what I know of them, but there's something about the lyrics and vocals and slick production I just don't appreciate.

With Song 2, Theme From Retro, You're So Great and Death of a Party, we would have had a strong and wonderful EP. Instead, we get a long winded and never ending, boring 1 hour album.

I really like blur but this album did not grab all the way through. I wanted to give it at least a three but overall I think I only really liked like three songs so 2 stars.

I'm sure Blur has a fanbase because there are two albums from them on this list. But, the fact is, they're a one-hit-wonder. The thing with one-hit-wonders is that their "one hit" stands out. Blur has "Song 2" and it's the only song like it on the album. Nothing else is even close to matching the energy. I know the band meant it as a joke track but the joke is on Blur. "Song 2" is 10x better than anything else in their catalog. I don't understand why we have an album by a one-hit-wonder on this list. The fact that there are two albums by Blur is unfathomable to me.

Out of all of the "Britpop invasion" trash that never really took off, this is probably the best. I appreciate the radical style change as well as the emotion and feel of the album. Still not a great sound, not much 'new' about it, not very catchy for 'pop' and, apparently, still today, overhyped. The Brits have done great things in music, but this whole thing was a low point for that whole damn country

Blurin huonoin levy, jota en ole ikinä ymmärtänyt. Bändi on ainakin itselleni aina elänyt hittibiiseistä, ja ne taiteellisemmat pläjäykset ovat olleet aina täysin yhdentekeviä tai jopa ärsyttäviä. Normaalisti hittien tai edes rock-biisien osuus levyllä on ollut merkittävästi suurempi, mutta tällä levyllä asetelma on kääntynyt päälaelleen. Ainoa omien Blur-suosikkieni listalle mahtuva kappale tältä viritelmältä on mainio Beetlebum. Toivottavasti listalla kuullaan vielä jotain aidosti merkittäviä Blur-levyjä.

I could have gone without this one, not my cup of tea

Just ok. Nothing special. "Song 2" holds up well, though it has been overplayed and overused over the years. But nothing else really stood out. Several songs were standard, perhaps even boring Britpop. What was most interesting about the album was how many hints of the Gorillaz's sound that could be found here. That got me thinking about Gorillaz, and how Damon Albarn's music evolved from early Blur, to this album, to the Gorillaz. So then I looked to see what Gorillaz album or albums were on the 1001 list. There are no Gorillaz albums on the list!!! What!? Their debut used to be on the list, but was removed in more recent editions. Gorillaz were refreshing and interesting and even groundbreaking. Every other British album ever made is on the list, so why not Gorillaz? I can't decide whether to dock this album a star (from a baseline of 3) due to my anger at the list, or to give at extra star because that first Gorillaz album is a 4 or 5 start album and I have nowhere to rate it.

Oh Blur, there are some moments where I like the music and then you go and ruin it with something I actively dislike. You could be so much better.

I heard Song 2 a bunch in college. I’m pretty sure until today it’s the only Blur song I’ve ever heard. I now know why it’s called Song 2, which shouldn’t have been tough to figure if I had thought about it. There really isn’t much else exciting on here other than On Your Own. Apparently the band changed musical styles somewhat on this album and became “more aggressive.” There is not very much aggressive about this album to me. The ambling Essex Dogs is almost interesting except for the spoken word delivery (boring!) and being way too long.

The 90s feel, which I like, doesn't counteract the absolute ass vocals which are creaky and sound like they're being sung through a dehydrated hangover.

After I wrote in my review of Parklife a week or so ago that Blur was the 90s version of XTC, I found out that the band actually sought out XTC front man Andy Partridge to produce Modern Rubbish, the album preceding Parklife, so apparently that was what they were going for. Yuck. Supposedly, their self-titled album was Blur's attempt to break away from the Britpop style they pioneered after the genre imploded. The result is reminiscent of a chameleon changing colors. Blur is the same creature as it always was underneath, but on Blur (1997), it's taken on the protective coloration of Indie rock's stylistic quirks, i.e. grungy guitars, noise experiments a la Sonic Youth, Stephen Malkmus' vocal yelps, Pavement's deconstructive strategies, warped electronics, et al. This could be read as a cynical strategy to stay relevant, and it probably was, but damned if they don't do a convincing job of it, making the cloying Britpop at the core of their sound more palatable. Unfortunately, the most thorough transformations are front loaded, so as the album grinds on, Blue reverts to its shallow, twee Britpop roots. Look, there's a lot of craft and skill on display here, but it's in the service of what is ultimately a pretty vacuous take on British pop. You can polish a turd to a high gloss, but well, you know what I mean.

Another overall disappointing album from Blur. But it does have Song 2 (and to a lesser extent, Beetlebum and On Your Own) on it. Like the other Blur records on this list, beyond the singles it is pretty forgettable. 2.5/5 (a bonus 0.5 for Song 2).

Song 2 was probably once good but now reduced to nothing from overexposure. Pretty annoying voice. Silly. Woo hoo! All I knew about this album prior to listening was Song 2, and it set me up for disappointment. Genre hopping is fun and all, but none of the journeys went anywhere particularly good...

I've always wanted to enjoy this album a lot more than I do, and I know I should rate it higher. "Song #2" is of course a blast. Much of the record is good-ish and seems like it would be something I enjoy, but I get a bit impatient with the songs partway through most of them.

Tracks 1& 3 weird noise - meh lyrics. Song 2 - great track, that's why it was so big You're so great, best track yet though trying too hard to give that "old record sound" most of the others it sounds like the guitars were recorded waay too loud. Most songs are just noise, not really structured. maybe was not in the mood for it? Sound more like songs that would be fun to go see live but not on an album

Ugh. This started out okay, but it got more and more painful as the album continued. I no longer wonder why I never heard any of this album except for Song 2. If I want to listen to Hüsker Dü or Pavement, I would just put them on and actually enjoy what I was listening to.

We don't like Blur in this household. Rude, self-important, pretentious Brits thinking they were making waves when it was just a drop in a lake. Rude to interviewers, rude to fans, rude to producers. This album has their one famous song that elevated their ego to astronomically unrealistic levels. Ironically, their best and most popular and famous song was them trying to poorly imitate and make fun of American rock music of the time. Little did they know that their poor mockery would be better than the rest of their entire anthology. The whole album is a stepped in wet shit. 1/10.

The instrumental components are kinda listenable (though mostly "why bother", verging on tedious/fatuous) but the vocals (lead and backing) are wildly off-putting, and the lyrics (unintelligible from audio, foolishly I looked them up) are IMHO shit. Too many songs I had to skip on first listen (couldn't make other people in the room put up with them), and found painfully tedious on second attempt. 1/10 is as low as my scale goes. (I hope the generator doesn't ask me to listen to anything worse than this ... fingers crossed.)

On it’s own merits an album like this can’t rate higher than a 2, but when you realize this bunch of vacuous twats have 2 albums on this list when bands like Genesis, Jethro Tull, and Yes rate 1 you’ve really got to question the validity of the whole project. Plodding, uninteresting, depressing. Sometimes I think the scope of my musical interests must be incredibly narrow because I find the majority of the albums on this list not to my liking. People have told me I'm a musical snob. Probably true. On the other hand, I'm always listening to music of one sort or another. I listen to rock, jazz, classical, country, bluegrass, and much more. A lot of the music presented here just bores me. Still, it exposes me to music I wouldn't have otherwise paid any attention to. Is it giving me exposure to different types of music or am I just wasting my time? I don't know.

This list loves its Brit Pop. Too bad so much of it's shit--this is no exception. Would I listen to again? Heck no.

This album contains some evidence that Blur were trying to move on/break away from/transcend the Britpop sound, and I can give them a point for that. But it still proves the conclusion I’ve come to over the course of this list — Britpop bands were all just trying to copy the sound and attitude of David Bowie’s 70s career. “M.O.R.” and “On Your Own” literally sound like Bowie ripoffs. And the ones that don’t sound like demos. You know, the farther I get into this album the less grace I want to extend. I take back my point. This sucks.

Honestly I try to be positive about the albums I listen to, but..... This apparently marked a new musical direction. It may be a new direction but it is hardly musical. I can't give any more than 1 star

Going through this project is just listening to a battle between Radiohead and Blur, and they're trying to figure out who can make the most drab sounding crap. I'm not sure who's winning, but I'm definitely on the losing end. 1 star.

The fact that this album was included makes me think the book came out about the same year. One hit wonder.

I love when a band puts thought into the order and the flow of the album. This was a mess and all over the place.

Wow I strongly disliked this album. It sounds like random garage metal that didn't fit together and often vaguely/strangely reminded me of other songs I've already heard of.

Worse than Oasis, not one good song. Still this horrible mix that destroys the dynamic range.

I poked around, and I think the NAM version of Blur is Pavement. This album played long after my enjoyment for it ended. The only song I didn't hate on this album was Song 2, and I didn't love it.

I actively did not like this album. I kept looking at the song list and thinking "is it over yet?" The first 2 songs started off okay, and I thought "Maybe I was wrong about Blur". Nope. Same opinion. What would this be equivalent to in North America, since this is considered "Brit-pop"? Green Day? Third Eye Blind? Or is more along the lines of Nirvana, Soundgarden? Anyway, this is a terrible album.

An unappealing blur is the best way to describe Blur. Overly long with one song worth listening too.

Day 5 - Blur's Blur This was fine. None of the tracks impressed me, and I only found a couple that I wanted to skip. I was starting to get really bored by the end. Song 2 is an old favorite, so I'm biased for that. But I still have to give it a 1/5 because that's the only song I particularly enjoyed out of the 14.
