Album Summary

Live and Dangerous is a live double album by the Irish rock band Thin Lizzy, released in June 1978. It was recorded in London in 1976, and Philadelphia and Toronto in 1977, with further production in Paris. It was also the last Thin Lizzy album to feature guitarist Brian Robertson, who left the band shortly after its release. The band decided to release a live album after their producer Tony Visconti did not have enough time to work on a full studio session. They listened through various archive recordings from earlier tours and compiled the album from the best versions. Various studio overdubs were made to the live recordings during early 1978 in Paris; exactly how much of the album is overdubbed has been a contentious topic since its release. The album reached No. 2 in the UK album charts, ultimately selling over half a million copies in the UK. It has continued to attract critical acclaim and it has appeared in several lists of the greatest live albums of all time.

Starting off with jailbreak was amazing, " oh cool! It's a live album so it'll be just like listening to it in concert" But no, it's multiple live recordings from various shows. Allegedly they chose the best versions to put onto the album, I was excited to hear the boys are back in town live but it honestly sucked.

I didn’t think I’d like this one as much as I did. I thought it’d be more straightforward rock, and it kind of was but I felt some emotion in it too, namely in Still In Love With You. The Boys are Back in Town is such a classic. Solid listen.

Just goes to show. I was lamenting another live album in the list (not that I am against them per se, just that generally I prefer a first listen to be a studio version) and then this turned out to be a little cracker. Another band that I had only heard snippets of until now dish up a really solid album. Happy days.

Not a huge fan of live albums so a bit iffy in that sense. Luckily not too much haptic feedback or crowd noise aside from annoying clapping, his speaking to the crowd and cheering. Going to listen to the main album as genuinely could be a 4.5 MIN. Not sure any of the actually songs from the live album will make it to 1001 Slap but the originals most likely will. Good Shit: - Boys are back in town - Dancing in the Moonlight -Southbound -Still in Love with you

An excellent, landmark ‘80s live rock album. A nice surprise!

Yeah nah

This album has good vocals, catchy songs, some great guitar riffs and music… and yet manages to be one of the most boring albums I’ve had to listen to while working my way through this list… maybe I’m just fed up with 70s rock music, a genre that so far seems over represented… maybe in a few years I’ll revisit this album and change my mind, but right now I’m giving it 2 stars and considering that generous

Returning to this has put it up among my favorite live albums. I love Thin Lizzy, and their studio albums Jailbreak and Bad Reputation are a few of my absolute favorite classic rock records. This concert took place shortly after the release of both of those, plus Johnny the Fox, another great one, so nearly the entire setlist is packed with amazing songs from those albums. And Phil is such a charismatic frontman, it was easy to get immersed in this experience. Excited to return to these a bit more often than I otherwise would have.

"Rock 'n' Roll will stand, man.” American Graffiti (1973)

Pretty good

I think this was pretty good actually. Just standard rock and roll album.

Do not care for it. Boys are back in town tho 😎

Some catchy stuff. If I wasn’t such a happy nice guy this would’ve gotten a two

This type of music really does nothing for me

As we recall, the concept of the "live album" was hugely popular in the 1970s. Thin Lizzy — one of Ireland’s premier rock bands, known for their distinctive and visionary style — also jumped on this bandwagon. Their sound blends local folk melodies and harmonica with galloping guitar riffs — the kind that Iron Maiden and Mötley Crüe would adopt only years later. In short: folk-style vocals meet heavy metal music. Audiences still debate whether this album qualifies as truly "live." There is no doubt that some tracks were re-recorded in the studio; the question is how much was redone. According to the album's producer, only the drums and crowd noise remained from the actual concerts, though other sources — including the band members themselves — dispute this. Ultimately, the album can be viewed as a collection of hits performed with great energy. Whether those performances took place in the studio or on stage matters less.

Jolly good fun

3.5/5 https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/thin-lizzy/live-and-dangerous/ Certainly more fun that I would have thought when this showed up on my page, but again has the curse of the live album: I'm not sure what it adds over the studio versions. Of course, I'm not familiar with the studio versions of the songs, but it just sounds like a pretty typical hard rock album to me. And then 1 hour 16 is looooong.

1970s rock and roll

I am pretty sure I had the same thought as most of you when going into this one (a live album from Thin Lizzy is essential listening, really?), but this was actually a pretty good live album. It sounds great, but that is probably the result of the overdubs which feel like cheating. Main issue is it is very long and does eventually become a slog to sit through, but it did take a while to reach that point.

Fun energy but not my thing. The boys are back in town!

Tiresome 1970s classic rock live album with crowd work and cheating overdubbing. The super deluxe version is 9hr 52min. I'm sorry that's too much.

Totally fine live album. Couldn’t really hear the crowd reaction for most of it and they hit right into each song pretty quickly.

"Ladies, would you like to have a little Irish inside you"? Very butt rock.

Bits are back was a surprise. Otherwise could leave it

Fucking brilliant live album. I've never really listened to Thin Lizzy, but after this, I really want to. Full of energy and brilliant playing. Still In Love WIth You was my fav song and first listen. Emerald and Rosalie were my other highlights

A perfectly serviceable rock album and pretty good for a live one! Slightly same-y but seeing as it came out in the seventies I gather they likely inspired a lot of other bands. I liked Emerald a lot!

Songs are good, not painful to listen to but don't know if I'm rocking with the live version. Not a lot of re-listenable value for me overall but definitely some strong moments.

Was expecting very similar to the ACDC record from last week, where its a load of samey hardrock/metal, but was pleasantly surprised by a few of their slower quieter tracks. Will revisit the couple that stuck with me

strange to include a live album for these guys. I suppose it means they have no good albums but enough singles that they can't be ignored. naff but boys are back in town ROCKS. + 1 for the boys being back in town at deano's bar and grill

THE BOYS ARE BACK IN TOWN

Not a great recording, and they even overdubbed it. I was too intimidated to listen to the remastered version (so many bonus tracks!) but that may have helped. Never sat down for a Thin Lizzy record. This was a fine intro, but not a fave.

I've never even heard of Thin Lizzy before, so starting their discography with a live album will be something else, lol. This is also the first live album I've covered on the list so far! 01. Jailbreak A fun little opener to this. Aged weirdly well. It sounds pretty good. 02. Emerald Absolutely badass, with some kick-ass lyrics. I hope the rest of the songs are like this!! 03. Southbound A nice, slower song after Emerald. Still sounds really nice, especially the chorus. 04. Rosalie / Cowgirl's Song Just a real fun one! 05. Dancing In The Moonlight (It's Caught Me In Its Spotlight) Not as strong as the first four, but is still real good. 06. Massacre Real kick-ass and super underrated!! The hardest song so far!! 07. Still In Love With You My least favorite so far, but is still great! Just didn't grab my attention like the other tracks have. 08. Johnny The Fox Meets Jimmy The Weed Just couldn't get into it. Didn't do anything for me. 09. Cowboy Song I can see the appeal, but I just don't really care It picks up in the second half, though. I hope it doesn't continue this trend and it just blew all of its load in the first six! 10. The Boys Are Back In Town Like, come on. This is a certified #HoodClassic. Incredible track. 11. Don't Believe A Word Just a fun one, lol. 12. Warrior A really forgettable one. Super basic, and not interesting. 13. Are You Ready Real boring. Not much to say, feels uninspired. Really lazy writing. 14. Suicide A weirdly dark song to come out of nowhere. But hey, I'm not complaining. This is a good one. 15. Sha-La-La Cool little song. Was fun. 16. Baby Drives Me Crazy The intro and band introduction was fun, the rest I could take or leave. Goes on way too long 17. The Rocker Is a nice time capsule of what was "cool". Nowadays this is such a lame song, but this shit would have been awesome at the time. There are some absolute gems on here, no doubt about it. The first six tracks were all the best ones, however. After that, very little impressed me, sorry.

Easy deal: Cut 25% (let’s just say side 4) for another star

Liked it - but felt very ordinary 70’s ish to me. I have no strong feelings about the album. Some good songs - some not so good…. But they started feeling similar in style. Didn’t know these guys were Irish so that’s interesting. Anyway - probably heard all the Thin Lizzy I need to.

Did you giggle at the following joke made on the album: “How many girls in the crowd have a little Irish in them?” *cheers* “How many would like a little more?” If yes, you’ll enjoy this album. If no, it’ll be a bumpy ride. 3.5 stars - glad the lads are back in town.

Its not bad by any means, but an hour and fifteen minute long live album from a 70's B band feels more like homework than a life changing musical experience.

I won’t necessarily be returning to this album, but feel like this concert would’ve been a good time.

considered one of the great live albums of all time (but fancy production made it look live). what the producers did was record a "sound check", manipulate the sound, and dub in a live crowd. because of this, i deducted a star.

Wow what an exciting wall of power rock from the 70s! Great instruments, songwriting, and vocals. Loved the energy. If someone told me this was Iron Maiden's first album, I would believe them!

I was familiar with thier popular stuff "Boys" so I was looking forward to listening to. I liked it being live. Some songs seem to drag on. Some seemed a little too methodic. Overall was impressed but wasn't totally disappointed.

Good sings that I prefer NOT to hear live.

Well lookie there, Bob Seger IS on the list. It is well known that there is nothing like a Detroit rock show ... and this is nothing like a Detroit rock show. It's fine but go listen to "Live Bullet" for comparison. I was over the album by the time they finally got round to "The Boys are Back in Town" (the "hey female" bs did not do them any favors) ...only to discover I still had another half an album of this. :-/ meh. Sorry, this just isn't doing it for me. I'm beginning to dislike double albums. Not sure they're justified nearly as often as they're utilized.

Sorry Thin Lizzy but you guys are not in Live Album territory for me. Some good drums though 4/10

I enjoyed this one.. again not a big fan of live albums but this ones made me feel like I was in the crowd Fav songs - Rosalie, Massacre 3/5

This is good boogey-woogey rootin-tootin' rawgin' rock. Was hoping to hear Whiskey in the Jar-ro (see: Metallica Cover). Enjoyed this overall. I feel like maybe they were prob super different from most other bands in their time?

This was a fun live album, but from review sounds like there's debate on what was live.

Hour and a bit of tight, flamboyant, absolutely rocking hard rock. This would have been a great show to be at.

Absolutely electric. Great live recordings

I couldn’t find this album on Apple Music, so I listened to an available playlist instead.

Much love for Thin Lizzy. Surprised they don't have any studio albums on the list (no Jailbreak?) but then they always were a great live band. The album still rocks, though I kind of wish they hadn't done the studio overdubbing that was so typical of "live" albums of the era.

Normally any Thin Lizzy would be an easy 5-star for me. Any Studio album that is. It irritates me that the only representation of this legendary band on this list is a Live Album. You might as well just start putting greatest hits albums on here. There have been plenty of other studio albums that have made this list, that were obvious "one hit wonders". I guarantee you put any Thin Lizzy studio record on here, its going to have more than one hit! Lame!

A rip-roaring concert recording with some of their best hard rock/ bar blues tunes. I still prefer the studio albums, though, where you can hear the dual-guitar assault in all its precision and glory.

The god damn archetype of classic rock that ROCKS! Great live album capturing one of the '70s greatest bands. Nothing beats the sound of a Les Paul plugged straight into a dimed Marshall and this proves it.

Impressive

2.6/5 Solid album but a tad too long for someone who hasn't really heard the band.

Solid rock and roll from veteran players. Everything pretty good... nothing stunning.

I don't think Spotify had the full album but the three songs it had were great. Really good sound quality for a live setting and well performed by the band

- csodas klasszik rock - szuper hang - szuper gitar - valtozatos dalok

I just went to Ireland a couple months ago and got an entire crash course on Lizzy at the Dublin Rock & Roll Museum. They had this record on the wall. That's all I could think of when I was listening to this. Feeling a bit of Irish pride internally for this one, God bless 'em.

Fine! The lead into boys are back was fun. I dislike having to hear the band intros on live albums.

Yeah they were !

Exception to the rule that live albums are not very good.

very funny to get a live album for the weekend i'm heading out to see Goreshit live. and a live double album? grumble grumble. not that live albums aren't worthy of being included, i've just never heard much by Thin Lizzy, so i have no reference point to compare these songs to. it's for the fans, probably. bangs though. the energy here is great and i never got tired of it during its run. despite my biases, this may actually be Thin Lizzy's definitive statement. deserves to be one of the 1001? i have no idea man i think i'd skip it. kinda funny that this was included over any of their studio stuff. it seems deceptively obvious to swap this for Jailbreak.

This record sounds like it was from one of my past lives. Not that interesting anymore.

Short album but great hits.

A tight, hard rocking live album. Really like it, and I see why it's regarded as a classic live album. What really stands out is the guitar work, but the bass, drums and vocals are also top notch. Is it long? Yes, but it's consistently good. A strong 4 after first listen.

Great live guitars. Lots of energy and still really melodic.

Surely a great document of one of the more underrated bands.

This is automatically in my top 5 albums! How did I forget my love for 70s and 80s music?? The Boys are Back in Town is literally my childhood watching A Knights Tale on DVD for Friday night movie night. This is literally the perfect album to throw on for a Sunday morning cleaning sesh

Grandes, enormes. The boys are back in town!!

A very solid live album. This thing rocks!

A live album that captures the spirit of rock and roll... Whatever that is.

First listen. Much better than anticipated. I never realized how much Guns n Roses took inspiration from them. Their guitars on Appetite for Destruction sound just like this.

Fun listen, nothing mind blowing.

Monday, 14 September, 2026 Rockin album. Too long. Phil Lynott is a great bass player and front man. The twin guitar hero’s slay.

Favourite Songs: Still In Love With You

Thought I was going to hate this. I really didn't want to listen to it! But the live able was honestly so so good. a little long but that's probably just my ipad tiktok baby attention span talking 8/10

Very good, varied and energic. The live aspect adds to it but is a bit goofy at times

really good

Now this is rock n’ roll.

Feels like I've been listening to this for forever, and it's not even particularly good rock. I start my listenings by every album being a 3. By like the fifth song this dropped to a 2, by song 14 I started contemplating a 1. By Sha-la-la's drum solo, the 1 was sealed. Sorry guys, maybe if it hadn't been a humongous live album I would have been more receptive to this.

Licensing issues, only partially available for streaming. Had to listen to it through YouTube, definitely not optimal. I hate live albums. Yeah, I get it, the critics felt the band came alive on stage. I hate listening to the crowd noise. It takes so much away. They could have mixed it out or isolated the mics to reduce it, and they chose not to. My rating: 2/5

a little better than expected. not 100% in my lane, but good live action

great live album however i would have preferred to just listen to one of their studio albums 8/10 best song - still in love with you

I always forget that Thin Lizzy is an Irish band. I also forget that they rule.

I don't love the inclusion of live albums on this list even though I realize some studio albums are technically recorded live which makes this more of a gray area. I also don't love that this album isn't a single concert but songs pulled from multiple concerts. But, I also think this album is incredible and that I should probably listen to Thin Lizzy a lot more.

ja dat is hard rock. erg lekker, maar mist best wat van de energie die ik zou verwachten van een live album "any of the girls want a little more irish in them?"

A fairly straight up approach to 70's rock and roll... I feel like this did help me appreciate Thin Lizzy a bit more. They are good at making pop-driven catchy songs layered in fuzzy, Wah guitar. This album, as a stand alone though, didn't feel particularly special in any real way.

A few years ago I saw Pup, Pkew Pkew Pkew, and the Dirty Nil. All three bands came out for the encore together and played the Boys Are Back In Town. It was wild and somehow wasn’t a mess considering the number of guitars and basses that were on stage. That was definitely a far more memorable event than this album, but to be fair, I was actually there. That said, I don’t dislike Thin Lizzy and I didn’t hate this album, but I don’t think I really needed to hear a double, semi-live album from them. Do they not have a studio album that would have been a better fit for the list?

Honestly, I was a little too busy to give my full attention to this album, but I did notice The Boys Are Back in Town when came along. Decent 70s rock--what else is there to say?

Ok album

Every track sounds the same. Reminds me of 1992, it’s that bad.
