Reviews (page 2 of 12)
I feel like live albums shouldn't be on this list. Yes, some are legendary, but I think it's a sneaky way to get what is essentially a Greatest Hits album on the list. This is good though, I can't deny it. Going in, I only know two or three Thin Lizzy tracks, but after listening to this, I can confidently say they are pretty damn good. Tight playing, good solos and great hard rock tunes throughout. It makes me want to hear the studio versions of tracks which is a good sign. 'Emerald' really chugs away nicely with blistering solos to end it, everyone loves 'The Boys Are Back In Town' and for good reason, it's a phenomenally good track, but again, I think I'd rather listen to the studio version although this one does have a great energy about it. 'She-La-La' almost wanders into speed metal territory. Overall a really solid offering, and a shame that this is the only Thin Lizzy album this list has to offer.
It's fine. Not awesome. When it started, I expected more of it. The genre, I really like. But some of the songs are too monotonous. Maybe the live sound is not for me, I would listen to this band in studio, but this live album was too long for me. 3,5/5.
Love albums are such a 70s thing. Nice one. You get to have a greatest hits but in a live setting, make a bunch of money. Don't care, Thin Lizzy! YouTube and streaming services ruined that idea. It's a pleasant recording. The band play pretty close to the album and the brief banter inbetween songs isn't too much. I don't really care for the band that much. I enjoyed a few songs, but it wasn't an amazing experience, I'm not there to watch the magic and I don't hold massive nostalgia for these songs. Even Boys are back in town was a bit of a let down. It made pleasant background music as we drove across the Island. 3 stars.
Makes me think of big hair. Induces compulsive air guitar with sick moves. Pairs well with mowing the lawn.
Ireland mentioned! I fear listening to a live album of a band i know two studio recordings of is gonna be wasted on me but I can't be arsed listening to a bunch of hard rock for this. I'll pretend I'm at a festival ig. This isn't fair but every hard rock song sounds the same to me idk. I like Southbound. Hitting the Phil Lynott Respect button but this just isn't my thing. Few decent songs and a good sound but I can't listen to 1.25 hours of rock without getting bored sorry. Wish i could give half stars bc this is a solid 2.5 for me. Enough fun bits to round up from iron maiden and that 90s rnb album but it's hard won. Mostly by the crowd work toward the end.
Ganz in Ordnung.
A couple songs by an okay band.
never heard of this guy and i wish it stayed that way. boring and way too long. 5/10
The boys are back in town 3.7/5
the boys were in fact back
sounds good for a live album, a bit too long and too many blues jams
If this had just been the album 'Jailbreak' I'd have given four stars. I don't understand the mindset that thinks this bloated, less dynamic, live record deserves a spot over their definitive landmark record. In acknowledgement of my hypocrisy, if 'Yessongs'(A Triple-live record) were on this list, I'd give it five stars. Prog to me is more suited to being bloated and imposing, whereas hard rock is better taken in servings that are small enough to leave you looking forward to the next listen. At least by playing harmonica on "Baby Drives Me Crazy" the overlooked Huey Lewis got onto the list.
So much sound and yet the energy doesn't translate. It turns into biker bar background music. 2/5
This had a satisfying ‘live’ feel to it (not always the case with a live album) but Thin Lizzy’s music never quite did it for me back in the day and on a relisten that still holds good now.
Heard Before? Nope. Not a fan of live rock albums - the studio exists for good reasons! Notes: - the vocals, while excellent, suffer the most compared to the studio recordings. the bass sounds like it was played with a hammer and the guitars are mixed oddly and unevenly. - despite the many negative features of the recording, the drums sound good. - all the performances are top tier, competent and committed, although the ballads really sag compared to the studio versions. - sequencing is just right. - i think i finally understand Thin Lizzy's influence on The Hold Steady. - like all Thin Lizzy, they take tight, interestingly constructed songs and then splatter them liberally with twin guitar showcases. Verdict: All the problems of live albums of the period. Great for those who love crowd noise, lame banter, subpar vocals from great vocalists, and extra extra guitar wank. Listen Again? No way, but I'll revisit the Jailbreak album at some point.
Really middle of the road 70s rock. Finding out they added overdubs in the studio so this isn’t really a “live” album either! Minus a star for that
I listened to as much of this as I could. Truth is, I just dislike live albums, especially for bands I’m not into. Thin Lizzy is fine, but I would never have dreamed they’d end up on this list, so making theirs the live album to listen to was certainly a choice. Listening to a live album is akin to listening to a party you didn’t go to. And considering this party was hosted by Thin Lizzy, I’m not exactly upset I missed it. Would I have had fun had I been there? Probably, but I wasn’t, so listening in later just doesn’t do it for me.
Me, about to listen to an album called "Live and Dangerous": omg this is a live album!? Ew though. I'm already way behind on my ratings, and you're giving me a live 70s rock double album? ;_; I listened to the whole thing. It did a good job at what it is, sure, but it didn't change my perceptions of live albums, 70s rock, or double albums. They hardly even sound Irish!
Reading about the controversy around this live album was possibly more interesting than listening to this live album. I did think it sounded particularly clean, so reading conflicting statements about just how much of the finished production is overdubs was fascinating. I would have much preferred a studio album on the generator, so finding out this is the only Thin Lizzy record on the list was disappointing. This would probably have been a 2.5 but as no half stars, 2/5
This is like being at the pub with your mates after work. You're having a casual beer before heading home to your loving wife and two children. But some old rooster is at the bar and has clearly been parked up for the better part of the afternoon. He makes eye contact with you, ambles over, and proceeds to chew your ear off about how good weekday drinking is. He is proud to tell you how happy he is to be away from the ball and chain, and continues to force his habitual drinking into the conversation at every opportunity. Another round? No thanks. Out of fear that this guy is offering a glimpse into your future, you head home.
It was okay. Pretty good 70s rock. The only song I knew was The Boys Are Back in Town. I was cleaning while listening, so I wasn't paying close attention to the songs, but seems like good music to exercise or clean to. I'd say 2.5 stars, but I'm going to go with a 2 because of how overdubbed it is (I know overdubbing is common on live albums but supposedly this one is mostly altered).
This is a LONG live album. I only know "The Boys are Back in Town" and "Cowboy Song". They both smoke here. Otherwise, just fine 70s live rock. They really loved their live albums, didn't they? I can almost smell the cigarette smoke on the album jacket.
These guys really were something. The recording is super clean, but you can still hear the energy of the crowd, which is a must for a live album.
Pride of Ireland
Brilliant. Heavy V/G/G/B/D rock. We need more of that on here rather than the Yank keech they keep serving up.
Incredible live album
A short but incredible live album. A couple of reimagined songs and they absolutely nailed it.
This live is absolutely gorgeous, so energetic and vivid, yet so great at sounding and with so much joy and fantastic instrumental moments in it. I've loved listening to this album. It has been such an amazing musical experience. There is so much talent in here, as well as a fantastic set of songs, which makes this album flow so well. It's just great.
Imo, één van de beste live albums ooit. Ook als plaat van Simon en papa gekregen ooit, dus dat maakt m extra leuk.
Now *this* is an album to listen to before you die. So fun. So catchy. Just plain good music. Favorite tracks: Emerald, Southbound, Massacre, The Boys Are Back In Town.
I’ve heard this before. This is one of the few Thin Lizzy albums I don’t own. I tend to think of live albums as like greatest hits albums where you’re better off listening to the original albums, and I might even say that for this one. However they open up on most of the songs and they’re completely on fire here, and they’re playing most of their best songs (though I’d like it better if they included Roisin Dubh). It’s a fantastic album.
Live Manna
If you are going to get one TL album this is it. Easily one of the top 5 live albums of the 70's with every track a banger.
Amazing live performance. Very energetic.
More than anything, Live and Dangerous just captures why Thin Lizzy mattered: great songs, played with attitude and finesse. Overdubbed or not, it’s hard rock done right—and done brilliantly.
The Lizzzzzzzzzzz! Underrated masters!
Straight with it and damn good. An incredible live album. Incredible.
perfect title is perfect
The Boys were Indeed, Back In Town! I will say only being familiar that particular song of theirs, I was Not prepared for the amount of sickening guitar solos. The energy of this album is absolutely electric-- from the smooth transitions between each song, to the crowd hype and participation, clearly this is a band well loved. And I can see why! The energy felt through the roof with every new song change, and this will definitely be going on any long drive that I take someplace. I loved the vibe of this record and it's energetic, bombastic feel. Highlights: Southbound, Dancing In The Moonlight, Cowboy Song, The Boys Are Back In Town, The Rocker. Special shoutout to some of the drum solos too they were absolutely awesome to bask in.
Нормальный лайв, но собранный по кускам. Пятерка для самого стильного мэна в музыке. Я так чувствую.
Splendid
Beschde Live-Album
Day 272 Fantastic album. Up there with the best live albums ever. Highlights Dancing in the moonlight Massacre Johnny the Fox…
Excellent all along, and then it earned that last extra star when I learned Huey Lewis was involved.
clean
Rating: 4.6/5 Short Review: Loose, loud, and ridiculously confident. Feels like a band that knows exactly what they are and just leans into it. Raw energy, but still tight where it matters. Favorite Track: “Cowboy Song” (live). That dual guitar harmony just lifts everything. Feels big without trying too hard.
I typically like live albums and don't like dad rock from the late 70s. Though I will say, Thin Lizzy (my Irish Kings) can be an exception. It's not as energetic as I expected it to be, but it is clean and solid the whole way through! And because it's Thin Lizzy, they will earn a 5 from me :)
Exciting experience!
What an excellent band. The title sums it up live and dangerous Great riffs, vocals and lyrics. Every song excellent am toying going for my first 5.
Amazing! I already have listened the majority of those musics of the album, but not in sequence intended by the band, and gapless! It is a real good album with a lot of energy and power
Not usually one for live albums. This was a discovery.
loved this album way too much! never listened a live album but that was great, the guitar solos were going crazy on this
Full stop, one of the greatest live rock albums ever recorded. Sure, there had to be some post-production touch ups and over dubs, but honestly you wouldn't be able to tell aside from the clean as fuck production. Phill and company sound absolutely on fire the entire time. The classics sound phenomenal, Phill is a fantastic frontman with endless charisma and a great live singing voice. The range of tracks performed is wonderful, from heavy metal anthems like "Emerald" to deep love songs with fiery guitar solos on "Still In Love with You". They even cover a Bob Seger song and make it 100% better than the original on "Rosalie". Thin Lizzy were one of the greatest rock acts of the 70's and they are fully responsible for the rise and evolution of Heavy Metal from rock music. Songs like the aforementioned "Emerald" and also "Massacre" predict and foretell of the eventual rise of Power Metal and Stoner Metal with their heavy riffs and blazing guitar solos. Feeling it come from the live setting is all the more proof of this. An easy 9/10 this record kicks ass.
At the top of their game, cool, loud, great tunes and some sick shreds. Can’t really get much better in a live album. So fun, just fucking wish I was able to see it live. 5.0/5.0 Best Song: the intro before Jailbreak
What more do you want, its got everything you need, its so good. They were so good, it's so much fun. Fucking get in. Best Track: Hard to choose, but Suicide is so good on this album
I was genuinely surprised at how much I liked this album, having only heard The Boys Are Back in Town previously. But man this is great
This slaps
OMG!!!!
Boys are back in town, jailbreak. Really great album. IDK why the link took me to an incomplete version of the album (only 4 songs), but I was able to find the full 17 song version on Spotify.
Damn this must have been one hell of a concert!
Epic
Love Lizzy, Phillip and this album
me gustó es power
beatiful! the real legendary
Wow, incredible songs in a plenty
Peak music
Been a life long Lizzy fan so I'm biased. This plays like a greatest hits collection almost. My only complaint is that most songs are played straight with no cool interludes or jams, but other than that, the energy here is palpable. Put this on while driving a long curvy road and prepare to feel pure joy. Better than Kiss Alive and Frampton Comes Alive any day.
A hell of a lot better than any live album that’s basically just playing the his has any right to be. This rocks super hard and doesn’t let up. Yes, now it’s dad rock, but the dads are right with this one. Exactly what I wanted.
Toppen helt enkelt
Great band, tight set. Good listen of some old classic rock hits with added live energy.
i'm not one to listen to live albums much, let alone Thin Lizzy (aside from listening to their Jailbreak album for the first time the other day), but WOW was i blown away. their energy is pure electricity here. Thin Lizzy is an absolute BEAST at these live shows!! this has honestly convinced me to listen to them more. favorite track(s): all sounded amazing played live, but my favorites were Still In Love With You and Sha-La-La. they just hit different. and that drum solo, oh my GOD
Now that’s a live album! Killer document by this highly influential band.
I can see why they were picked the #2 best Irish band. I really enjoyed this live album.
5/5. Not necessarily my kind of music but the guitar work and taste was there.
the boys are back in town
Excellent
This is basically exactly how live Rock & Roll is supposed to sound, to me. So much energy, heavy, you can just feel that the band and the crowd is having an awesome time. Really doesn’t get much better than this.
Me sorprende que el hard rock llegue tan atrás como los 70. Me imagino a la gente en la época hablando de este álbum como quien habla hoy en día de infant annihilator. Gratamente sorprendido con alguna como Dancing in the moonlight.
How i never Heard of this band before? They were so influential for all rock and metal history. A black leadsinger. The songs are legendary. Simply amazing.
I listened to this while writing my letter of resignation! I loved this album. My dad likes it too.
This might be one of the best live albums I’ve ever heard, maybe I just got this on the right day and time but it was great
WOAH! i like irish rock?
Great
It was almost 80 minutes long and I still didn't want it to end. The catchy songs and charisma left me wanting to play it again and again.
Very similar to Black Sabbath, but more fruity.
Great album with many songs I liked. Prefer live music. This album also matches my preferences. Hard rock, crooners, and most recently country are my top three genres. Rock guitar and great hooks. 2 songs added to playlist.
I don't think some of the hits I've been listening to over the years were them, great album
LOVE! Pure energy ! A great live LP.
This album saved me.
Typischer 70er Jahre Opa-Hardrock mit 2 Leadgitarren. Riecht nach Koks und Groupies. Genau mein Ding.
I like this genre of rock. Good listening.
really enjoyed the old rock sound and loved the guitar solos - goes hard. whole album is a vibe.
A bliss point is the precise, engineered amount of salt, sugar, or fat in processed food that maximizes pleasure and consumer desire, creating a "just right" taste that encourages overconsumption and repeat purchases. Coined by Howard Moskowitz, this industry strategy aims to trigger dopamine hits, making foods nearly impossible to resist.
perfect spring album
10/10
i cannot believe i did not know about phil lynott before now
Listened to this album so many times when I lived in College Park, and I am happy that it finally came up because I told Kevin a number of years ago that he should give this album a listen. I try to make a point to listen to this every St. Pats Day. Thin Lizzy just absolutely rocks and there are a lot of songs on here (Emerald, Massacre, Cowboy Song) that really prove that. I was trying to think of what to rate this based on this listen, but I can't give it anything other than a 5. When it came down to it, while not perfect at all, there is a reason why I have listened to it so many times and it must be because I like it so much.
rock n rock n rollllll, rock n rock n roll!
actually being there live would be craaazy i think
can’t listen to lmao it’s not available
You’re linked to the wrong version of the album on Spotify
Phenomenal- electric performance from Thin Lizzy. How I wish I was there! I was singing along to the hits I knew but I enjoyed every other track just as much. This album delivered iconic bass lines, catchy songs, smooth vocals, tasty guitar solos, all with the added energy of the crowd to add the cherry on top.
Live and Dangerous is classic rock at its best, capturing the feeling of being front-row at a Thin Lizzy show with an expertly curated setlist of electrifying riffs and melodies that make you want to dance.
Unfortunately not many songs on Spotify but what I could listen to was great, classic rock album. Boys are back in town!
a great time. had zero idea they were an irish band. only knew boys are back in town prior to listening to this, thanks to simgstar rock. slay
Phenomenal!!! You know when you listen to an album and then go see that artist and it sounds nothing like what you heard before? Thin Lizzy is definitely not in that category. Listening to this made me jealous that I wasn't at that concert, and this is coming from someone who before today couldn't particularly say that they're a Thin Lizzy fan (I knew maybe 2 songs???). Electric. A little bit of grit under that shine. Perfect.
mwah! love this album it’s so peak
Gotta thank my motha for listening to Thin Lizzy when I was younger.
fantastic!! love that this was a live album. not always a fan of that but it worked very well here. this is the first or second rock album I’ve enjoyed beginning to end! will definitely be listening to this again. -favourite tracks: EMERALD and STILL IN LOVE WITH YOU
One of the most underrated bands ever and top 5 live albums ever made. Really captures Phil Lynott in his essence
The boys definitely back in time for this review
Great album Dancing in the moonlight is a classic Definitely not what I thought I enjoy but so wrong
brian downey ... WOW!!!
BANGER
Too long to feature majority bangers
5/5
Word
What I would give to be at this gig!! Some live albums fall flat but this one does not disappoint
Didn't know Thin Lizzy could shred
This has some great vibes throughout the album. Pretty light electric for most of it
Perhaps the greatest rock album ever made. It’s just fantastic from start to finish.
Brilliant live album of energy filled rock.
love love love AWESOME
5/5 classic all time live album from the 77 run
Hot damn! I am biased towards this genre but I'm quite pleased with this excuse to check out some songs I've never heard by them. Lots of rockin instrumentation!
A fantastic listen, and I will be returning to it. Great guitar work, great drumming.
Awesome. Just superb
I feel like a putz giving this album 5 stars, but this album represents everything I want a live album to be. I didn’t know who Thin Lizzy was before this listen, but his charisma is absolutely dripping through my headphones from start to finish.
Loved every second of it. Never thought I'd like a Live album so much. Jealous of those who were there!
Well, well, well. One of the best live albums ever!
Merits its rep as one of the best live albums; dual lead guitar work is better over length of whole album that any other rock album I am aware of, even Cream Live.
If you just want to rock, this is a solid choice.
One of my favorite live albums, electric from start to finish. I always forget Huey Lewis is playing harmonica which is a fun surprise.
This was great. Especially the jazzy elements on a few tracks.
Amazing energy, great hard rock songs, some nice slower numbers, the sound of the harmonizing guitars, and Phil's charismatic voice all make this a perfect live record. Five stars easy for me.
Good stuff
Wish I had been at this concert. Guitar and vocals so good. Classic rock. Listened before? N Saved tracks? Y Favorite tracks? Emerals, Jailbreak, Boys Are Back in Town, Massacre ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Loved it. Saved lots of tracks.
Thin Lizzy has always been criminally underrated in the US outside of their two big hits. Even with constant lineup changes and their openness to different styles, they always put out killer guitar driven rock and roll. Fantastic voice, fantastic band, and an iconic cover. Easy 5/ 5
Super bass rytm super
Peak Thin Lizzy, fabulous distinctive sound, must have been amazing to see them live.
No complaints. This is so chill but also hard! Easy listening and some classics.
Ok... I see what you did there! 🔥 I didn't realise how many of these songs were theirs. Bangers! Vocals were also amazing, insanely good for a live album. Thoroughly enjoyed, take my 5 star 5 ⭐️
I don't think live albums should be on this list but I've listened to do many bad albums on this list and Thin Lizzy are far better than the majority of them so I'll have to give a 5
Underrated band. This live collection sounds great.
A live album that made me realise that thin lizzy have songs that aren't the boys are back in town and also that they're quite a good band.
After wading through all the mid milque-toast rock on this list i expected this to be more of the same. This is definitely one of the biggest surprise hits on this list so far. Unfortunately slightly front loaded and fails to stick the landing on tbe back. If it did this would be a bonafied masterpiece. Unfortunately we have to settle for simply phenomenal. 9/10
Hot fiyahhh
Like any good live album, this provides a best of, and it is delivered at their best, but it is a shame not to see some of their studio albums being recognised, especially when certain artists have multiple entries in this 1001.
Sounded great and a very tight band!
What can I say, I like Thin Lizzy ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Live And Dangerous is an album i absolutely love. It may not seem all too special from the lens of a modern listener with it's typical metal/hard rock sound and the stage presence of the band not being as interesting as the stage presence of other musicians, but for 1978, this was good and definitely seemed to heavily inspire Motorhead as their music does sound really similar. The songs here are a bit samey but that didn't stop me from loving all of them as they were just incredibly fun, enjoyable romps. The recording quality did take me some time to get used to but as i kept listening, i enjoyed it's rather rough nature. This is one album that definitely is a case of just getting better and better as it went on. Best Song: Massacre Worst Song: Jailbreak
4.75/5 This album rocks!! This has the quality of a studio album, if you didnt hear the crowd you wouldn't know it was live. There were so many great guitar solos and an epic drum solo on Sha-la-la favorite tracks: Sha-la-la, Johnny the Fox This was the kind of album I hoped I'd discover on this journey
I did like it.
Obligatory "I don't like live albums but..." disclaimer. This is a pretty good one, I would probably rather listen to some of their studio albums but the band sounds great here. I am going to rate this higher than I normally would because I don't expect to see any more Thin Lizzy on this list, and honestly some people have been too harsh on them. They are accused of being MOR, unoriginal, standard 70s heavy rock. But they have an really distinct, immediately recognisable sound. Really, who else in their era was making music that sounded like this? The mix of Soul, Funk, Rock, with Lynott's gorgeous voice and thumping base, along with that twin guitar attack that was so influential. They weren't the first to do it but were certainly one of the best examples.
yeah this one kind of slaps. thin lizzy has one of my favorite sounds of a band of all time and it really holds up in a live format. the band has a lot of energy and the setlist is pretty killer. it's probably not all that mind-blowing, but it's a hell of a lot of fun to listen to. my only qualm is that huey lewis was somehow involved in the making of this album, which feels illegal.
One of the greatest live albums I've ever heard. Expectations were low, just because I'm typically not a fan of live recordings, but God damn can these guys shred live.
I knew three Thin Lizzy songs going in (Jailbreak, Boys Are Back, and Cowboy Song), and I was pretty sure I'd like the album, and I did! Love the guitar harmonies especially. This one is up there with Deep Purple and Kiss as far as live albums go. On first listen, I think Emerald and Don't Believe a Word were the standout new-to-me tracks.
Great album, really enjoyed listen to it while running. Can't believe how many classic songs are on this one album.
A live album! and a hella good one at that. I need to listen to more thin Lizzy after this because this completely sold me on them. There is so much energy and awesomeness here it's sick! It avoids basically all the tropes I don't like about Hard Rock and keeps the best aspects. It never feels like it gets tiring and has enough variety to give each song. In short, it's awesome. 97/100
Great live rock album. I’ve slept on Thin Lizzy!
10/10 Fantastsk band. Phil Lynott døde så alt for tidleg.
Une masta dinguerie comme dirait mon frère Gerry Love. Chaque chanson est un bijou du rock. Respect pour Phil Lynott.
Fantastic album! I never thought much of Thin Lizzy. Their radio hits always seemed pretty ok, but nothing special. The energy and rock-ness of their live album showcases their talent much more effectively.
Мне прям нравится вайб, классно. Под изучение латыни самое то.
Yes
is it 5? I'm not sure but I love them
Great early rock n roll
This was really good, way better than I expected. Hard rock with a couple of super famous hits that are honestly really fun, even if over played. There are some absolute jams, with the best being Still in Love With You. The instrumentation is great, the opener is great, The Boys Are Back In Town is great, this was a very good listen.
LOVED THIS!
I have this record - love it ! Saw them on the next tour (Black Rose) with Gary Moore there's a Super Deluxe album, with 7 other gigs from 76/77/78 !
Over several listens the album really grew on me. I keep returning and that is a good sign for an album, at least for me.
Absolutely pumping. Never felt too fussed about thin lizzy’s studio albums but this is really making me reevaluate
Beautiful. Stunning. Amazing. These Boys are Absolutely back in town!!!!!
THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT BABYYYYY. Ain't no way this is live because of the crisp audio and guitars but still, incredible stuff. Honestly. Never heard of this band before and I was delighted.
The boys are back in town! Fun live album. Some sweet guitar solos and an energetic performance by Phil Lynott. I didn't know most of the songs but they all felt familiar and there wasn't a single song that I wanted to skip.
Rocky. I love these types of songs.
A classic of the live genre
banger after banger
FANTASTIC LIVE ALBUM!!!!!! Full of riffs and melodies!!! Band's energy is full-tilt! Definite 5 stars
Not so Live apparently but oh so very Dangerous. One of the most classicest bands of the 70s pulving out killer song after killer song plus a dash of call-and-response, bawdy stage banter and extended drum solo for the full live experience. Mixed by Tony Visconti, many of the songs here sound even more incendiary and definitive than their studio counterparts - Rosalie and Still In Love With You in particular. All in all, this peak 70s rock and with Boys Are Back In Town, Southbound and Don’t Believe A Word in one place it’s just loaded.
Wow, they were really spectacular live.
not my thing
Ik kende Thin Lizzy eigenlijk niet zo goed, maar zelfs dan is dit live album een feestje
Goated
HOT.
This was just fantastic! Going in I really only knew their couple of big hits, but wasn't familiar otherwise. They could really play!. Being an Iron Maiden fan when I was younger I could definitely feel the influence on that later band in Thin Lizzy's style. I never knew. Over a hundred albums in, and I think this may be my 1st fully new-to-me 5 star rating.
Listen to Thin Lizzy since I was young and most of the hits are here. As a classic rock enthusiast this just hit all the marks and really reminded me of how good of a band Thin Lizzy was. Not a fan of live albums because the vocals do tend to change. But there were a lot songs i hadn't heard before which I loved and as a guitarist, hearing some variations on the live solos are nice. I think found another album I love from start to finish(there aren't many). As a Live album it's unbelievable clean compared to other live albums I heard.
The cover says it all - a rocking album by a band in its prime.
En klassiker! Älskar Phil Lynott! Femma
Legendary!
Good old fashioned rock n roll
It’s no Chinatown or Renegade or Black Rose or Jailbreak or even Thunder & Lightning, but it is Thin Lizzy so of course it was great.
How have I not heard this album yet?
Ha love this one. I'm very familiar with it, overdubs and all! I think that it's a great album no matter whether there are overdubs after the fact, which there are and it's never affected my listening. The epic drumming from Brian Downey is a particular highlight
Awesome live album. The performance and production both shine. What’s not to love about Thin Lizzy?
Such a great album loved it!
Fuck me Phil Lynott was a mad jam musician, album slaps
I came around to Thin Lizzy in my 30's (of course, right?) after a lifetime of hearing a "The Boys are Back in Town". Now, I have a considerable soft spot for them. "Live and Dangerous" captures Thin Lizzy at the peak of their career, compiling the best performances of their best songs between '76-'77, effectively bookending their "classic" period, as guitarist, Brian Robertson would leave shortly after release, and substance abuse would begin to ravage the band from this point forward. This album is home to some of Thin Lizzy's best recorded versions of some of their songs. The slowed live version of "Still In Love With You" is downright heart-wrenching, with an incredible solo. Likewise, this is the most affecting version of "Southbound" recorded. Otherwise, every Thin Lizzy song you would want to hear is here, and played with gusto.
This is good 70's rock & roll. Heavy guitar that does not become monotonous because if the melodic, catchy riffs. The Boys Are Back in Town is a legit anthem.
Super solid live album. Chugging bass lines, epic guitar solos, and a charismatic lead singer. Also, the transition between Cowboy Song and The Boys are Back in Town is so smooth. It was great to hear how the crowds interact during shows in Philly and London.
Damn... Liked this way more than anticipated. Wall to wall hard rock bangers. Great stuff.
The Platonic ideal of a live Rock n Roll album
This was a great one! I have never really listened to Thin Lizzy specifically, so I wasn't expecting to recognize so many of their songs. This is great nostalgia music and just solid performance overall.
Overblown rock wank that refused to end. Loved it.
OOO yeah this is good. I was worried with it being a live album but trusted I was in good hands with Thin Lizzy. I know I'd like a little more Irish in me. 5
The Remastered version really kicks
another live rock album on this list, this one another example of true classic hard rock. it's a little longer than the other albums, but i can't complain, especially when it sounds this nice. i love rock albums and i especially love live rock albums. it takes a certain amount of skill to perform that good live on stage, and these guys absolutely nailed to the wall. these riffs are killer!!
Fav song: Still In Love With You One of the GOAT bands ever to exist. Amazing live and in studio!!!
Live albums of this music always are so much better
hello um hacker
I don't care that this is pretty much a studio confection - it's the most immediate and electrifying live hard rock album. Ever. If I had just a thimble of Phil Lynott's charisma - man, how different life could be...
Phenomenal live rock album. I’m a huge Thin Lizzy fan so I was already familiar with the album. But this would be the perfect album to get into Thin Lizzy cause it’s a super clean live album with a crazy good tracklist. I'll say this repeatedly for every time this happens but live albums shouldn't be on this list at all. They are their own creature with its own characteristics and merits to judge it by, where as a studio album that has infinitely more time to work on it and its production is almost unfair when compared. Plus most live albums are also best of albums.
Fantastic
Short and sweet
I love a 70s double live album. Much better than a Greatest Hits because the songs get a unified sound and as a kid who grew up far from any large venues they were like a promise of something incredible. This was the second album I bought for myself with a Christmas record token. It also introduced me to the joy of second hand records. I couldn't believe I was buying a double album (a new concept in itself to me) for the same price I'd just paid for Ace of Spades. It was a loud New Year. The tennis racquet found its true calling.
FIVE. What is it about the Irish?? I just can’t quit ‘em. ✅✅ Emerald ✅✅ Southbound ✅✅ Dancing in the Moonlight—hello, sax! ✅✅ Still in Love With You—guitar, from solo to heartrending harmony I had ordered the CD for my mother by Suicide. May just quit my day job and proselytize the gospel of Phil Lynott full time…
A personal favourite. Iconic.
Fantastic. Delighted to be introduced to this band.
I LOVE this band and I must give this a 5 because Jailbreak album is not on this list and I have to represent. These guys rip hard, listen to the riffs! If I think about music that I like from the 70s, these guys are in the top 3 easy. The transition between Cowboy Song and Boys are Back is super satisfying in this live show. You gotta feel bad for Johnny after he got smacked by the chick at Dino's.
Day334 - one of the best live albums i’ve ever heard. i love phil lynott’s voice. there’s been talk of putting them in the rock and roll hall of fame and im all for it. and one more thing, a young huey lewis plays harmonica on this album
One of if not THE best live albums of all time. I was so excited that this album popped up (honestly this account of the generator is dropping one great album after the other. I probably have more 5 star ratings then my old main account) If you haven't listened to this album then you should really give it a try. It's a great introduction to the Thin Lizzy catalog. If only I were alive or rather old enough to have been able to see them live but since I wasn't I have this and it's pretty damn good.
Pretty good! I really enjoyed this one. It tapers a bit at the end, but I loved the energy throughout. Up in the air between 'Emerald' and 'Cowboy Song' for my faves from this album.
Yes, a fair few tweaks and overdubs, but what a sound! Really makes you wish that you had been there.
awesome album. some of the best 70s/80s rock
One of the finest live albums ever, capturing a band at the peak of their confidence and creativity. A wide variety of songs and tempos , blistering dual guitar harmonies and solos. Highly recommended
Jailbreak
What a great live album!
Despite the argument about how much of this was actually recorded live, it holds up really well. Fantastic versions of the songs.
Note: Not available on Spotify. Now THAT is what a live rock and roll album is supposed to sound like. Tight band, guitar shredding, Phil's mind bending bass and voice. Drum solos that sound like drum solos! A good live album makes you feel like you should have been there -- that you missed out on something special. And this has that in spades. (And it even has Huey Lewis on harmonica!) Unexpected bangers: Johnny The Fox Meets Jimmy The Weed, Southbound, Baby Drives Me Crazy, Don't Believe a Word
Absolutely needed this yesterday. It felt so fucking good after the horrors of Election Night to blast “Jail Break,” one of the greatest songs ever, as loud as possible in my ears. Thin Lizzy were the coolest, the best. Long may the reign. Imagine sounding this perfect live.
The late seventies is a time where punk came to the foreground, which led me to believe that not much else in the rock idiom was interesting in those years, bar some part of Bruce Springsteen's output and a couple of punk adjacent acts (Television, Blondie...), all of this before "post-punk" reshuffled the cards anyway. All of this explains why I didn't know the first thing about Thin Lizzy before I started this 1001 Albums project. Apart from their name, that is. But I just had that filed next to Cheap Trick in my head rock canon--which is not so bad, all things considered, yet not necessarily conducive to an immediate listen that would turn out to be essential. That was a GRAVE mistake. Studio album *Jailbreak* had already given me a hint that I was already missing out on something excellent before I listened to my first Thin Lizzy song. But this double-live album reaches yet another level. The instantly iconic one. Discovering this record is like finding out the missing link between Van Morrison and AC/DC. Or the lovechild of Motörhead and Jimi Hendrix (Phil Lynott's vocals, goddamn it! So close to Jimi!). Yes, along with Phil's distinctive, one-inch-before-the-beat bass playing, you have that clichéed hard work guitar soloing drawing on fifths and thirds. But the end result is so damn melodic, so damn infectious, that it's impossible for me now to resist to it. To put it in a nutshell, the whole thing is a thrill, and I won't even name a single song here. Obvious hits from the studio albums (from the information I could garner online--I only really know *Jailbreak* up to know) fell as equally important as their deep cuts here. That hour and sixteen minutes fly by as if it was a 40-minute album. Everything is energetic, imaginative, fun yet elegant. No wonder a lot of punks actually lived this band. They played something different, but there was common DNA there. And I usually don't like live albums. Yet here my usual criticisms of live albums can't apply. Maybe it's because Thin Lizzy "cheated" with those supposed overdubs. But I don't give a rat's ass if they did. What matters is that the songs are served right. And since you have such a large tracklist, you can enjoy the closest equivalent of a "best of" album here, yet one that feels 100% cohesive. The best of both worlds, really. Number of albums left to review: 17 (plus the 80-ish extra LPs listed on this app, included because different past versions of the book have mentioned albums that have since been dropped in subsequent editions) Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 422 (including this one) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 252 Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 313
Eines der besten Livealben!
What a great live album.
Really fun album - had no idea who this was but recognized boys are back in town of course.
11/10/24 A good, fun, live album.
The best live album of all time alongside waiting for columbus by little feat
Genuinely phenomenal. The fact that this is a live album is ABSURD! Easy 9/10.
One of my life time favourites / love it since it came out / have listened to all available formats… vinyl, cd, video, deluxe issue cd…./ So sad Phil passed away that early
HOLY FUCKING SHIT HOW HAVE I NOT HEARD THIS BEFORE!!! Gods be praised! Absolute, face meltingly, finger blisteringly, drum thumpingly, fucking AWESOME rock and roll!
I don't like live albums. Why do I want to listen to something full of mistakes and sloppiness when I could listen to the "real deal", i.e. the studio version? Anyway, I first got into Thin Lizzy when I was about 15 years old. I loved their 'greatest hits' CD, and this album in a way is a version of that. There is something incredible about the pared back lack of noise, where a lot of most songs are just bass and drums and vocals. It makes me wonder what the guitarists would be doing on stage, awkwardly standing around waiting for the next solo? But when their turn comes around, the solos are powerful and incredible. That twin lead guitar sound is really unique and their overall sound contrasts so well with rock bands which in my opinion fill the sonic spectrum with too much (e.g. Metallica). So while I still hate live albums, this is a clear 5.
This was a nice surprise for me. Live albums are very hit or miss for me, and I like Thin Lizzy, but I don’t love them. But this? I loved this. I was surprised to see this on here instead of Jailbreak, but after listening, I get it. This album also showcases just how talented and charismatic Phil Lynott was. It loses a bit of steam for me in the last few songs, but it’s still stellar. One of the best live albums I’ve ever listened to.
Best live album ever!
Well, that’s an easy 5. I really only know Thin Lizzy for “The Boys Are Back In Town,” and while a lot of this album’s setlist features tracks that carry a lot of that song’s DNA, I do think this album manages to make those tracks stand out and feel rad on their own – this is my first time hearing any of these tracks, whether studio or live, and the energy behind them just felt off the charts. Lots of great variance here too – a few love ballads, a few “great war stories,” and just a lot of bangers from top to bottom. It does start to kind of wear you down over time – there is a point where a lot of these do start to blend together, feel a little samey, and the blustering guitar and drum solos don’t quite hit as hard as they do earlier on the album. However, make no mistake about it – I think this was a fast and exciting 78 minutes. There’s not a second of empty air here, and even if a track feels “flat,” it’s still an awesome listen. I don’t have any real complaints here, only nitpicks for my musical tastes. I really fucking enjoyed this – very glad to dive deeper into Thin Lizzy, very glad to get some new bangers, and a very easy 5 to give.
Sitting in my kitchen doing bullshit work on my laptop while listening and this makes me want to throw the computer out the window, quit my job, drive my car through my neighbors house, get out and seduce his wife. This is the opposite of Sonic Youth. Fuck yeah.
Gold standard 70s rock. I think the first two tracks have some really great progression with psyche/rock guitar that is super clean and sweet. Springstein style vocals with great song structure and catchy hooks. Then "The Boys are Back in Town" which is obviously a banger.
thin lizzy forever
Incredible live album. A classic. Banger after banger.
butcher forever
dame un nuevo album este esta que mola
Sounds like it was a great show.
The boys are back in town is an all time banger and Thin Lizzy may be my favorite live band ever
I kind of expect this album to be rated lower by folks who maybe only know "The Boys Are Back in Town" and "Jailbreak" or whatever, but my god, what a document of a band at the absolute peak of their powers, not realizing the cliff they're about to fall off of. The slower, heavier arrangement of "Still in Love with You" is maybe the greatest live recording of a song, period. We would all kill for a love worthy of a song like that, played like *that*. Good god.
Absolute amazing set, and a 10 all around
its fucked up how there are like 1000 christmas songs but only 1 song aboutr the boys being back in town
Really enjoyed this. Would have been fun to see live.
Truly great.
In my opinion, Thin Lizzy is one of the most underrated bands of the 70s. Not only are there albums underappreciated, but now knowing that their live show is incredible just puts the cherry on top. Every song from this record either equals or surpasses the studio recordings. The musicianship and lyrics were all on point throughout. Even their signature sound of harmonizing guitar solos were flawless, a mighty impressive feat. Not to mention when "Cowboy Song" transitioned right into "The Boys Are Back In Town" it was goddamn perfect and my mind was blown. Overall, this was a damn near perfect live recording, and makes me want to listen to Thin Lizzy even more. Notable Tracks: - Jailbreak - even better than the studio recording and it's not close - Rosalie / Cowgirl's Song - Still in Love with You - great classic power ballad with some sick guitar solos - Sha-La-La - Baby Drives Me Crazy - nails the blues vibe, and THE Huey Lewis on harmonica?? 9/10
Short and sweet!
Those twin guitars and Phil's bass attack. What's not to love.
Just one of the best live albums ever made. A sad reminder of the loss of Phil Lynott - but what a ride he had along the way!
I was surprised to see Thin Lizzy on this list - and what a joy to get a slice of their live set! There are songs, and there is Emerald. A swashbuckling ride from start-to-finish. Southbound has great vocal harmonies Contrasting some other live albums on this list, I like the song-to-song nature, with only a smattering of mic talk. The seamless movements from song to song is brilliant.
Terrific album
Appropriately rockin 🤟
One of the very best live albums ever. Catching Lizzy from November 1976 to June 1978, when they were at their peak live. .sjb
I love this album. Classic 70s Rock. Phil just gets after it. Beautiful voice, tough, loner attitude. Non-stop guitar rip. Still In Live with You is the masterpiece here. The second half of the album never lets up…Cowboy Song, Suicide, and The Rocker. This album makes me wish I could have seen TZ live.
Peak Rock and Roll. A unchangeable amount of cool.
If I had to describe this album in one phrase, it would be "kick-ass". I never really thought much about Thin Lizzy beyond The Boys Are Back in Town, but that might actually be my least favorite song on this recording. Electric and punchy musicianship, the perfect kind to dance and head bang to
great
The prototypal live rock and roll album.
Cracker. Definitive recordings of so many songs.
That is one of the best live albums out there.
This was immaculate. From production to energy to everything in between. Some really consummate showmanship it seems!
Consider myself a fan of Thin Lizzy and even had the Jailbreak disc, but this album absolutely blew me away. These guys are better live. I was playing some of this for my wife and she shared a story of being driven to high school by her sister, in a 1978 Monte Carlo, listening to Thin Lizzy on a 8 track cassette. Now I'm confident every rock n roller who went to high school in the 80's had the Jailbreak album, even Angie. Love Phil's voice and the unique sound of the band. They rocked out, blues out and even had a couple mellow tunes that were fantastic. I have always loved Rosalie, Cowboy Song, Running Back (sadly not on this album), Jailbreak and Boys are Back in Town but Still In Love With You has quickly become one my favorites. Gogdamn, that song really hit me good and made me think of times I about lost the love of my life. Thank God she has put up with my shit through the years. I had no idea Bob Seger wrote Rosalie and smiled when he threw props to Seger in the intro. Another surprise was the introduction of Huey Lewis as the harmonica player. There was really only one song I wasn't a fan of, but I loved this album so much , I have listened 4-5 times this week and it just kept growing on me. So many great sounds and songs, my rating has gone from a 4 to where Thin Lizzy is going to get their own spot on my Spotify account. I've been diving into their music collection all week. I seemed to have forgotten how good these guys are and this is one of the reason I love this site so much. After last several albums I am really happy to be reintroduced to Thin Lizzy. They will become part of my regular listening rotation. Most of this album will be downloaded. Great album! 5
This one's for the fellas!
un cinco. Tienen una versión de whiskey on the jar muy buena, aunque no está en este disco.
Twin guitar attack! Love the harmonies and the dueling solos. The bass is clear in the mix too. They can slow it down when needed, like Still In Love With You, complete with extended solos. The smooth transition into The Boys Are Back In Town is a ton of fun. Other highlights: Emerald, Massacre, Don't Believe A Word, Are You Ready, Suicide. Top notch hard rocking live stuff from start to finish.
This was some of the best rock I've heard in a minute. And this has to be one of the most well mixed live albums I've ever heard. 17 tracks and the groove kept groovin the whole time
Love it when a terrific live album shows up on here. Honestly feels like it should be a totally separate list/category, since I’m not entirely sure if a studio album by same band would be my thing but this definitely is 👍🏻
Loved it! What a concert <3
Conhecia pouco, q album otimo Fave: Still in love with you
Phil Lynnot sjunger unikt o bra. Älskar livemusik
Loved it! They ate and left no crumbs. First live album I've maybe ever liked. Will be going back for more
Amazing album, from start to finish. Emerald is a fantastic song as is Dancing in the moonlight. Also a big fan of the ending of Rosalie. There's something about the overall sound in this album that I really enjoy. Fantastic live album and was very happy to see it on the list!
Thin Lizzy's 1978 double live album, Live and Dangerous, transcends the limitations of the genre. It's not just a document of a concert; it's a raw, potent distillation of the band's essence, capturing their fiery spirit and musical prowess. This review delves deep into the album's lyrical storytelling, electrifying music, innovative production choices, recurring themes, and lasting influence. Lyrical Storytelling: From Street Tales to Epic Ballads Phil Lynott's lyrics are a masterclass in weaving vivid imagery and relatable narratives. Tracks like "Jailbreak" and "Johnny the Fox Meets Jimmy the Weed" paint gritty pictures of working-class struggles and streetwise characters. Lynott doesn't shy away from portraying the harsh realities of life, but injects a sense of defiance and camaraderie. In contrast, "Dancing in the Moonlight (It's Caught Me in Its Spotlight)" switches gears, becoming a bittersweet ballad about love and loss. Lynott's emotive delivery adds depth to these stories, making the listener feel the joys and sorrows alongside the characters. Music: A Dual-Guitar Attack and Tight Rhythms Thin Lizzy's sound is anchored by the legendary twin-guitar attack of Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson. Their interplay is electrifying, with soaring leads that complement each other perfectly. Tracks like "The Boys Are Back In Town" showcase their ability to create catchy riffs that are both powerful and melodic. The rhythm section, bassist Lynott and drummer Brian Downey, provides a solid foundation. Downey's energetic drumming pushes the songs forward, while Lynott's powerful bass lines lock in with the guitars, creating a tight, cohesive sound. Live and Dangerous captures this dynamic perfectly, with the energy of the live performance amplifying the impact of the music. Production: Capturing the Raw Energy Producer Tony Visconti made a bold decision to forgo excessive studio polish, opting for a more raw and energetic sound. This approach pays off in spades. The crowd noise is present but balanced, adding to the atmosphere without overpowering the music. The instruments are crisp and clear, allowing the listener to hear every nuance of the performance. While some live albums suffer from muddy production, Live and Dangerous strikes the perfect balance between capturing the energy of the concert and delivering a listenable studio experience. Themes: Brotherhood, Rebellion, and Duality Several themes weave their way through the album. A strong sense of brotherhood permeates songs like "The Boys Are Back in Town" and "Jailbreak," celebrating the bonds between friends and the strength found in unity. Rebellion against authority figures and societal norms is another recurring theme, evident in tracks like "Johnny the Fox Meets Jimmy the Weed." Live and Dangerous also explores the duality of human nature, with songs like "Dancing in the Moonlight" capturing the bittersweetness of life. Influence: A Legacy of Inspiration Live and Dangerous' impact on rock music is undeniable. It redefined the live album, showing how it could be a powerful artistic statement rather than simply a collection of greatest hits. Bands like Iron Maiden, Metallica, and countless others cite Thin Lizzy and Live and Dangerous as a major influence. The album's blend of catchy hooks, powerful riffs, and raw energy continues to inspire new generations of musicians. Pros and Cons: A Double-Edged Sword Live and Dangerous boasts several strengths. The electrifying performances, raw production, and captivating lyrics create a truly immersive experience. However, some minor drawbacks exist. The double album format might feel overwhelming for some listeners, and a few studio-recorded tracks are interspersed amongst the live recordings. While these tracks showcase the band's versatility, they might disrupt the flow of the live experience for some. Conclusion: A Live Masterpiece Live and Dangerous transcends the limitations of a live album. It's a testament to Thin Lizzy's songwriting prowess, musical talent, and raw energy. The electrifying performances, coupled with the raw production and captivating lyrics, create a truly immersive experience. While minor drawbacks exist, the album's strengths far outweigh them, solidifying its place as a live masterpiece and a cornerstone of rock music history. Live and Dangerous continues to be a vital and influential album, inspiring new generations of musicians and fans alike.
What a brilliant live album. Must have been amazinig to see in concert. Suprisingly the BSides which I didn't know were my favourites. Emerald/Massacre/Still in love/Sha-la-la were some highlights. The band had a much funkier sound in the B Sides. Some of the best guitar playing and riffs I've heard as well as a great sound mix.
I love Phil Lynott. This album was just really good rock.
One of the best live rock albums.
Thin Lizzy is far more awesome than "The Boys are Back in Town" (even though that song slaps). This live album is just a showcase of their showmanship and talent. Their sound is incredible and I can't believe I never knew how good they were. I think I loved the ballad "Still in Love With You" more than any other song and I loved just about every song on this album. I'd give it 6* if I could and will be coming back to it
I’m quite a bit familiar with Thin Lizzy’s catalogue, but have never listened to any of their live stuff. I can see why ‘Live and Dangerous’ is recommended. Quite simply: TL was a formidable live act, as heard on this album. Tight, well-rehearsed, and a sonic force to be reckoned with!
Fucking amazing album start to finish.
1. 4.6 2. 4.7 3. 4.7 4. 4.5 5. 4.5 6. 4.8 7. 4.8 8. 4.7 9. 4.6 10. 4.9 11. 4 12. 4.6 13. 4.2 14. 4.8 15. 4.3 16. 4.7 17. 4.4
I'm amazed at the production quality and sound of this live album. It does sound live, but there is minimal to no crowd noise most of the time, the instruments don't sound blown out, and the vocals sounds great and don't ever fade out. Therefore, this really does serve as kind of a "best of" with a lot of energy. I haven't listened to enough Thin Lizzy, but this is a great starting point. My instinct is to give it 4 stars, because it is live and not an actual album. Even though it is great, being a live "compilation" album makes it feel less impactful to me personally than a recorded album. However, just taking it for what it is in the context of a list of albums someone should just check out, I can see how someone could say, "This is the best Thin Lizzy experience to get a good grasp of what they were."
Oh! I liked it!
Man I think Thin Lizzy is so slept on all of these songs are bangers. Nothing hits the same as when Phil goes DONTBELIVEITDONTBELIEVEITDONTBELIEVEIT.
un cinco. Tienen una versión de whiskey on the jar muy buena, aunque no está en este disco.
