Nice album! I'm a fan of Metallica, and I definitely hear some of their NWOBHM roots in this.

Surprised how much I like this! Great album.

Small Faces
4/5
Fun and quirky. Love the psychedelic rock aspect of it. The lyrics themselves didn’t make a huge impression on me. The spoken word story during the last half of the album was kind of weird. Why half the album and not the whole thing? Not sure if I see myself revisiting it or not. Though the music itself is rocking.
I just realized I probably listened to more than just the base album. I notice the regular one only has 7 tracks and I think I listened to 12? So the base one doesn’t have as much of the talking and storytelling, which might be better for a re-listen.
Jefferson Airplane
3/5
Cool, foundational psychedelic rock. I love Grace Slick's voice. Some of the songs do it for me, and others don't. Somebody to Love is a stone cold classic.
Dr. Dre
3/5
The beats and those high pitch leads are so iconic. I’m not normally a rap fan but the flow is amazing and the world of early 90’s Compton is vivid and striking.
Metallica
5/5
One of my favorite albums ever, and what I think is the best metal album ever. Crushing rhythm guitars and soaring leads. The incomparable bass work of Cliff Burton. Dark but unified subject matter. A masterpiece.
ABBA
3/5
Pure 70s pop from Sweden's biggest group. You can't deny how good they sound, especially on Dancing Queen. Some songs sound like show tunes more than pop songs - Money, Money, Money comes to mind. It's a fun album, if a little shallow
4/5
One of her albums that I had never heard. It sounds of its time in a way—it sounds like the year 2000 somehow. Overall, interesting melodies and a few rockers, too. The Thom Yorke duet is beautiful. Nice record!
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
4/5
I have a bit of a blind spot with 70s classic rock. Plus, I haven’t always loved Tom’s voice. But this is a fun little album! Breakdown is especially great.
Sonic Youth
4/5
I am more familiar with Daydream Nation and Goo, but this was a great excuse to get to know this album better. I love the feedback and wail of distortion that these guys bring, along with interesting songs. So great!
MC Solaar
3/5
I'm at a disadvantage in that I don't speak French. But this sounds great. Effortlessly cool. It's not something I would listen to for fun, but it's beautiful stuff. My rating is for me personally; I think this is quality stuff!
Stan Getz
3/5
Smooth Jazz! Goes down smooth and easy. I'm not a big jazz or bossa nova guy, but this is beautiful with wonderful musicianship.
Stevie Wonder
3/5
I'd never heard of this album before! I've heard Stevie, of course. His voice and musicianship are fantastic. I'd say I struggled a bit connecting to most of these particular songs, though. I'd imagine if I listened to this a few more times they would connect more. I did really like the last song on the album, and Boogie On Reggae Woman was pretty fun, too.
Blur
4/5
The only Blur album I got when it came out. Such a fun album. I bought it because of Song 2, but it’s the other songs I enjoy more now.
Donald Fagen
3/5
It’s got great musicianship and performances. But it really doesn’t move me much at all. With the exception of the title track- I loved the little jazzy radio jingle section of that song.
The Who
3/5
I really enjoyed the commercial bits and little things between tracks. It was very British humor, but that's not a bad thing! The songs themselves didn't do as much for me as some other Who songs I've heard do. But it was a pleasant listen!
4/5
Such a bold move to make your first album a live album! Honestly, this just rocks in a way that it's surprising was possible in 1969 (or 1968 when it was recorded). The label proto-punk works well for these guys. It's funny to think of the controversy about the language at the beginning of Kick Out the Jams...it was a different time, for sure.
I am impressed with the album, though I thought some of the songs dragged on a bit, especially toward the end. Still, cool album!
Bob Marley & The Wailers
4/5
This sounds great. Everything about it.
Fela Kuti
3/5
Am I cool enough for this album? Probably not, but it sounded pretty great!
Aerosmith
4/5
Fun rock n roll! Steven Tyler’s voice isn’t my favorite, but he uses it to its best here.
The Stooges
3/5
This sounds cool, and it’s amazing how influential this was. I wouldn’t say the songs themselves blew me away. The 10 plus minute chant was a wild choice for a third track also.
Mj Cole
2/5
I thought the first two tracks were great. After that, it got boring and repetitive.
The Beach Boys
3/5
Interesting songs I’d never heard by them. I liked it but not loved it.
Violent Femmes
4/5
Such a great energy and fun songs. The singer really has an amazing presence in these songs. And the rhythm section of bass and drums are second to none.
Yes
3/5
Prog rock! Sounds great. I was impressed with the bass and drums on these tracks. Hard to believe this is from 71. Fun album!
The Roots
3/5
Nice album! I’m not the biggest hip hop guy, but the first few songs were especially good! It lost the plot for me a bit later and the whole album was a bit overlong in general. But some great sounds!
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
4/5
Cool album. I enjoy the acoustic and electric halves of it. Is it supposed to be live? I can’t totally tell.
Johnny Cash
3/5
Good album. I love the original Boy Named Sue, but kind of a bummer that it is bleeped out in this version. Not my favorite Jonny Cash overall.
Jack White
4/5
Jack White showed he could keep going on his own after the White Stripes. Great folk rock blues songs.
Jacques Brel
3/5
Beautiful singing. Interesting songs. But unless I learned French and really soaked in this stuff for a long time, this just isn’t going to resonate with me.
The Isley Brothers
3/5
Funky! Good vocals and I like the lead guitar.
Stephen Stills
4/5
Great 70s rock. Loved the country flair on a lot of these tracks. I’ve always heard of Stephen Stills, but inward impressed by the music on this one!
Blondie
4/5
Somehow I thought this would be more disco sounding than it was. A solid new wave rock album!
Muddy Waters
4/5
Wow, these songs sound amazing. So good. Muddy Waters sound incredible and his backing musicians are on-point.
William Orbit
3/5
Cool, vibey album. A little of its time, but honestly still sounds pretty great.
Judas Priest
4/5
Nice album! I'm a fan of Metallica, and I definitely hear some of their NWOBHM roots in this.
fIREHOSE
3/5
Pretty cool album. Reminds me of some older REM, but doesn’t grab me as much as they do.
Nine Inch Nails
5/5
Such an intense album. I wouldn’t say I like the main character of the album, but the story of his descent is interesting and the music is incredible.
Garbage
4/5
Fun album! Some parts sound a bit dated now but over all a fresh fusion of sounds.
Gillian Welch
4/5
Beautiful songs. Not a peppy, fast album but it doesn’t need to be. Love her vocals and the guitar playing that accompanies her.
Def Leppard
3/5
Some good songs, like Photograph. I was surprised how much they sounded like AC/DC on a couple of songs. The vocals weren’t my favorite.
Songhoy Blues
3/5
Pretty rocking! Didn’t really hit me emotionally because of the language barrier. But these guys are good!
Derek & The Dominos
3/5
Great blues rock. It dragged on a bit long for me though.
Bob Dylan
5/5
Bob’s first album of mostly original songs. So many classics.
Eminem
3/5
There’s some good stuff on here and some not so good. Fun to hear his not really humble beginnings!
The Killers
4/5
When this came out, I liked the songs but never enough to buy the album. Listening to it now, it honestly sounds great. I liked it way more than I thought I would.
Beach House
4/5
Fantastic melodies an instrumentation. Perfect dream pop. I think I prefer their album Bloom but this is pretty great.
Blur
3/5
Nice little album. I enjoyed it!
The War On Drugs
4/5
A throwback classic rock album, but with enough mystery and great songs to make it work. Fantastic album.
Thundercat
3/5
Very interesting. It’s kind of funny and bizarre but also very well done. I enjoyed it.
Goldfrapp
3/5
Cool album. Songs are well done and have a unique sound. Not something I’d personally reach for a lot but it’s good.
Kacey Musgraves
4/5
This one surprised me. Beautiful, understated songs. Her voice is great. Maybe the production was a little too “slick,” but this was a very nice album.
Janelle Monáe
5/5
An amazing mix of r&b, funk, rap, and rock. A cool concept. An amazingly confident first full length. Love it.
Sister Sledge
2/5
The title track is a classic, but nothing else did much for me. I was surprised how short the original version of the title track is, where the weaker songs dragged on for much longer.
Talking Heads
5/5
Such an amazing album. Keeping the same basic rhythm on the songs and then doing weird stuff over it. Not a very technical explanation but that’s how these songs work! A masterpiece.
The Byrds
4/5
Great album!
A Tribe Called Quest
3/5
Cool album in the history of hip hop. Not my favorite but enjoyable.
Talking Heads
4/5
Great album! Amazing it’s their debut.
Carole King
4/5
She has such an amazing voice and her work on pop songs is amazing. There are a couple of dull 70s pieces in this album, but it’s over all very good.
The Rolling Stones
3/5
Sounds great and a couple of classic songs.
Portishead
4/5
This is a dark, tense album. You never feel at ease listening to it, though it’s quite beautiful.
Motörhead
3/5
This album rocks.
Fiona Apple
4/5
Amazing debut album. Criminal is such a great song. The others are good too, even if I don’t like this album as much as her others.
The Smiths
5/5
This is a dark, weird album. But it also is moving and the instrumentals are fantastic. Morrissey’s vocals get silly at times but it all still works so well. A masterpiece.
Kraftwerk
2/5
Cool sounds and I’m sure pioneering for it’s time. The songs don’t do much for me on a single listen.
Frank Ocean
3/5
Cool to hear innovative r&b. Some songs, like Pyramid, are amazing. A lot didn’t grab me on one listen.
Nick Drake
3/5
I feel like if I had more time with this album I’d like it more. Still, some good songs and I like his voice and love his guitar work.
Jimi Hendrix
4/5
It’s amazing how this influenced so much of my favorite music. Honestly still sounds good.
Fleetwood Mac
3/5
First time I’ve ever listened to a full FM album. It was pretty good! I don’t love the male vocals but the female ones are great.
Simon & Garfunkel
4/5
Absolutely classic songs. Still makes me sad that they didn’t make more together, though Simon had some great solo work.
Jurassic 5
2/5
A hip hop album that seemed competent and fun, but didn’t move me much.
The Crusaders
2/5
I was surprised that all but the first song didn’t have vocals. It’s well done music, but not my thing.
Jorge Ben Jor
3/5
Cool album.
Willie Nelson
2/5
I feel sacrilegious with my rating here. Willie is awesome. His voice sounds great in these songs. They are competently played. But wow, if this isn't a boring, milquetoast collection. Do these add anything to any of these songs?
The Residents
3/5
I wouldn't say I'm in a hurry to listen to this again, but I respect the boldness and bizarreness of this album.
Simply Red
3/5
Mercury Rev
3/5
Kendrick Lamar
3/5
You can tell how he became so big. Rap isn’t my favorite but Kendrick is pretty great.
Hugh Masekela
3/5
Great sounding jazz. Not really my thing but I liked it.
John Martyn
3/5
Bluesy folk music. I didn’t hate it! Sounded good overall.
Stereolab
3/5
Strange and quirky, but it all sounds great. I definitely didn’t take it all in on one listen, but I liked it!
Van Morrison
3/5
Beautiful album. I haven’t taken it all in yet. One I feel will go up ratings wise the more I listen.
AC/DC
4/5
Son great rock and roll! The title track is so incredible.
R.E.M.
5/5
Best indie album ever? Maybe. Every song is so good. They started right at another level.
The Young Gods
3/5
Weird album, but I respect it! I don’t know French, but this had some cool sounds.
Turbonegro
3/5
Pretty rocking! Never heard of these guys but this wasn’t bad at all.
James Brown
3/5
He brought those people to a frenzy.
Leonard Cohen
3/5
Haunting stuff! Title track is amazing.
Fleetwood Mac
4/5
Ryan Adams
3/5
Great Americana sound. Probably a little too long of an album.
Caetano Veloso
2/5
It’s cool music, but it just doesn’t do much for me.
Penguin Cafe Orchestra
3/5
Very interesting and not what I expected.
Stevie Wonder
4/5
Fantastic album. So many great songs.
Radiohead
5/5
It helps that I’ve listened so many times. But in my mind, this is a masterpiece. So crazy that they did this right after OK Computer.
Arcade Fire
5/5
Wonderful debut. Ten fantastic songs.
Prince
4/5
Various Artists
4/5
Sounds fantastic. It’s dated, but in the best way. They don’t make them like this anymore. The vocals and drums are all especially great. Merry Christmas!
Lauryn Hill
4/5
She sounds so fantastic in this. And for a long album, the songs are consistently good. Really wish she had a more prolific career, but thankful we got this.
Metallica
5/5
While there are some issues with the recording (you can't hear the bass, the bass drum can be kind of click-y.) The songs are pure thrash heaven. I remember buying this on cassette and pretty much wearing it out.
Basement Jaxx
3/5
Not what I was expecting based off that album art I’ve seen for decades. Not terrible. Not my favorite.
R.E.M.
5/5
They sound so big here. Two songs right in a row — It’s the end of the word as we know it and The One I Love — are masterpieces.
My Bloody Valentine
4/5
Shoegaze bliss! This album sounds incredible. You can also really hear the influence this had on Smashing Pumpkins Siamese Dream. I think SD had better songs over all, but this is just such a cool album.
Lou Reed
3/5
More straightforward than I had expected. Some good songs for sure.
Beatles
5/5
Unbelievable album. McCartney’s songs are so impossibly good on this. But even the couple of lesser known album tracks are solid. One of the Beatles’ best.
4/5
Can’t believe I’ve never listened to this. It’s great to hear all these songs from Blonde on Blonde era Dylan. Both halves sound amazing! Bob’s electric band was on point!
The Rolling Stones
3/5
Cool to hear these early days. Some good songs for sure
Yes
3/5
Cool guitars and song structures. The vocals aren’t my favorite.
Green Day
5/5
It so amazing what they pulled off on this album. Great songs. Turned themselves into a classic band with this.
Bob Dylan
5/5
What a classic. So many great songs.
Al Green
4/5
Great songs. Love the horns and drums too.
The Allman Brothers Band
3/5
I didn’t realize his much these guys rock! I did thing some of the longer songs didn’t need to be as long as they were.
Rod Stewart
3/5
Some good songs here. He always used to annoy me, but I do like some of these. And you have to admit it’s a great line, “knowing that you lied straight faced while I cried.”
Wilco
5/5
Fantastic songs. Experimental but still solid. Love it all.
The White Stripes
5/5
More experimental than most of the White Stripes stuff, this is still an amazing album. I love the run they had.
Sepultura
3/5
I don’t know if it should, but this reminds me of Korn. Over all it sounds good. The songs themselves weren’t always my favorite but nothing bad.
Bad Brains
3/5
Never heard them. But this was pretty good!
Holger Czukay
3/5
Weird but pretty cool.
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
4/5
Great songs. Loved it.
Pixies
5/5
Amazing songs and production. I love Steve Albini’s drum sound, and the vocals of Black Francis and Kim deal are so great.
Hüsker Dü
4/5
Sounded great. A lot to digest in this big album but I liked it.
Grateful Dead
3/5
Pretty good and interesting, though a bit over long.
Stereo MC's
2/5
This is so late 80s early 90s sounding it’s crazy. It’s almost easy listening with beats. You’ve got your British guy sing-rapping over various harmless beats and melodies. No abrasive sounds in the whole thing. I don’t hate it. It’s done background music. But not a lot interesting going on with the possible exception of the title track.
Bob Marley & The Wailers
3/5
Songs sound great. Even if they weren’t my favorite Marley tunes.
The Clash
5/5
It’s so amazing they went from straight punk rock to these wild, weird songs. So good.
Dexys Midnight Runners
3/5
Good melodies and cool strings and horns on many songs.
The Divine Comedy
3/5
Not my favorite but also didn’t hate it. Such a strange album. Hard to know even how to classify it.
Hawkwind
2/5
Wow this was a long one. And I wish it was better! There is some great rock parts here, with awesome drumming and a great guitar tone. But man as far as songs go most of these just don’t hold together. And don’t get me started on the weird spoken word sections!
Dusty Springfield
3/5
Some good songs here. Love son of a preacher man.
The Offspring
4/5
Forgot how good this album was! Amazing tunes.
Suede
4/5
Surprised how much I like this! Great album.
Jimi Hendrix
4/5
Classic rock!!
Norah Jones
3/5
It’s easy listening but it’s honestly quite good. Her voice works so well with the instrumentation.
R.E.M.
5/5
I see REM, I give 5 stars. This album was their major label debut, but they weren’t afraid to make a weird, catchy, at times dark, album. The bonus untitled track is them at their poppy best.
Kendrick Lamar
4/5
He is definitely a genius. I love all the inventiveness all over this. I honestly don’t care for the crudeness of a lot of it, though.
Ryan Adams
4/5
Beautiful songs performed very well. Great album.
Primal Scream
3/5
Interesting. Not my favorite but I didn’t hate it.
The Icarus Line
2/5
I love rock and there’s some good sounds here. But this just didn’t hit with me. Sorry.
Elvis Costello
4/5
Great album! Amazing this was his debut.
The Who
4/5
Never listened to this but I was impressed with it. Good songs individually and they connected to the story of the album as a whole. The child abuse was a bit shocking to hear. But actually good that they were willing to speak about that way back in the 60’s.
Bob Dylan
5/5
Stone cold classic. Every song is good, many are great. My favorites are visions of Johanna, leopard skin pillbox hat and Sad eyed lady of the lowlands.
Can
3/5
Pretty weird, but definitely has some cool parts.
Billy Joel
4/5
This album is full of great song after great song.
Radiohead
5/5
Amazing. For an album that gets treated as a lesser Kid A this is filled with perfect songs. Pyramid Song and Life in a Glass House are songs that consistently give me goose bumps.
Bruce Springsteen
4/5
Haunting songs. The decision to use these essentially spare demo recordings for this album was such a genius decision. It makes the album so much better.
Alanis Morissette
4/5
This was everywhere in 95, but wow these songs hold up pretty well. Pure pop rock goodness here.
David Bowie
4/5
Rocking 70s David Bowie is always great. Not all the songs hit as well as Ziggy Stardust, but still good.
PJ Harvey
4/5
This has such an unusual but cohesive sound. It doesn’t sound dated. Love it.
Joni Mitchell
3/5
Interesting album. Over all I liked it. I would need more listens to see if I’d become a fan or not.
Santana
3/5
His guitar playing holds up! Still sounds great. The songs themselves didn't do that much for me on their own, but there wasn't anything bad about it.
Bob Dylan
4/5
I’m so glad Dylan made this album so that the narrative of a formerly good, washed up old singer songwriter didn’t become the way he was thought of. This album started showing he could release good music even as an older man. Now, I understand if someone thinks this album is a little slow. It is, but when you’re in the right mindset for it, the songs hit hard. Case in point is Highlands. It drags on forever…but! When you’re in the right mindset it could keep on going and you’d be grateful. The story about the waitress makes me so happy, even though it’s quite slow and someone might say it doesn’t lead to a conclusion. But it’s also what makes Dylan so great.
Mekons
2/5
An odd country infused rock album. The Lost Highway song at the end really brings it together well but a lot of the other songs don’t do it for me.
Charles Mingus
3/5
Very cool sounding jazz album. I’d need to listen a lot more to really get it, I think. But I liked it!
Big Brother & The Holding Company
3/5
Very interesting, and Janis Joplin’s vocals are great. I don’t know that most of the songs hold up that well though. Another Piece of My Heart is a notable exception.
4/5
Didn’t listen to this back in the day, other than the singles. I’m pleasantly surprised! It sounds great and the singles feel like old friends.
David Bowie
3/5
Surprisingly a lot of instrumentals. But still a good album.
Chicago
3/5
Some good stuff here, but way too long and bloated of an album.
Ice Cube
3/5
The lyrics didn't do a lot for me, but musically I liked this better than a lot of other rap from this time period.
T. Rex
4/5
This was a great discovery for me! I’d heard Get It On before, but this was a great all around album.
Jimi Hendrix
4/5
Jimi's guitar work holds up! Some of the psychedelic songs don't quite pack the same punch for me, but over all I still liked it quite a bit.
Dolly Parton
4/5
Beautiful album. Country isn't always my favorite but it's so hard to resist Dolly's charm on this set of songs.
The Associates
3/5
There was some interesting sounds here. I liked a lot of them, but it left me a bit confused too. Maybe more listens would open it up?
Madonna
4/5
Surprised by how good this is. Madonna was never my favorite, but I enjoy the restraint in these songs. Interesting production and some of her best vocals.
Beck
5/5
Who are you?
I’m the enchanting wizard of rhythm.
Why have you come here?
I’ve come here to tell you about the rhythms of the universe.
This album makes me very happy. Super funny, completely playful and unhinged. And it’s filled with great songs.
Duke Ellington
3/5
Sounds pretty good! I’m not a big enough jazz fan to understand all the nuances of the music, though.
Buena Vista Social Club
3/5
Really enjoyed these tunes. Not sure if I'd listen again, but I like them.
The Beach Boys
3/5
This was…ok! Nothing grabbed me too much, though I like the sounds and harmonies. Help me Rhonda is the only one I had heard on this album.
Neu!
3/5
I enjoyed these songs. They’re weird but also, not. I’m not sure I get this band.
Nina Simone
3/5
I enjoyed this. She has a great voice.
Bruce Springsteen
5/5
Been a while since I listened to this, but wow does this album hold up. Full of great songs, and the rock guitars plus saxophone and piano all blend perfectly here.
Peter Gabriel
4/5
I was surprised how much I liked this. I’d heard the singles when I was young and I never liked them. Hearing the whole album, though, it’s great avant-pop. Pretty cool it was as popular as it was.
Big Black
3/5
Pretty good. Not really all that crazy or wild. Not sure it’s something I’d want to listen to regularly.
The Byrds
3/5
This was nice. I love their version of My Back Pages. Nothing else grabbed me hard with one listen, though. The psychedelic stuff was interesting, but maybe a little more dated than some things from back then.
The Who
4/5
Great sound on a live album. Drums sound fantastic. It’s funny to hear the difference of a 1970 concert audience to today.
Radiohead
5/5
One of my favorite albums of all time. Absolute classic front to back. It’s held up with time, too. I’m thankful this album exists!
The Velvet Underground
4/5
I’ve never listened to this. I really enjoyed it. You can tell how influential it has been.
Wire
4/5
I was pretty impressed with this. Not every song was spectacular, but they didn’t need to be. As a huge REM fan, it was super fun to hear the original version of Strange! Also, this album had some great guitar tone.
The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
2/5
Didn’t dig this. There are interesting ideas all over the place, but they never come together to great songs. There are some genuinely bad songs on this. But the inventiveness and cool sounds keep it from being a 1.
The Rolling Stones
4/5
Strong album by them! Not one I’d heard before but it sounded great.
Miles Davis
3/5
Still sounds great.
The Fall
3/5
Some cool sounds here. I think it would take me a lot of listens to really get it fully. The singer is a bit of an acquired taste, but I definitely see the comparisons made to some of Stephen Malkmus’s work, and he is one of my favorites.
Kelela
3/5
This had some great sounds. I actually wish it was more “electronic.” She had good vocals.
Doves
3/5
I feel like I should really like this but the songs didn’t connect with me. Could be the one listen only problem. Sounded pretty cool though.
