Spanish Train And Other Stories
Chris de BurghWhat even the fuck? A charming and occasionally jarring series of vignettes and story telling. Worth a revisit.
What even the fuck? A charming and occasionally jarring series of vignettes and story telling. Worth a revisit.
Iggy Live bringing the power and the DANGER. Way to antagonize the crowd Iggy, I wish I sounded this good if people were throwing shit at me. 1! 2! FUCK YOU PRICKS! Dude is there a riot happening in the background?! This is an insane record.
This is a really cool hip electronic album. Jean Leloup's Dirty Talk is a weird song. But its like a DJ's DJ record. Lots of crazy samples all over the place. Stepchild is also super fun. With a song with tons of references to the Muppets, what isn't to like on this thing?!
what a goofy album. in a cool way.
yea fuck this.
Kayleigh has some chops. Not really my thing.
This album makes me want to throw stones at it.
Groan. Okay so Dave's music has a lot of baggage for me, so he is perpetually an artist that I just cannot for the life of me give a fair listen to. There is a lot of good texture sonically, I just cant take Dave's vocal delivery, texture, or really anything about it seriously. This is the guy that literally took a shit on Chicago. When he gets the orchestra involved on Halloween its overstuffed. The Stone is good. Its just this kitchen sink over the top instrumentation. See Crush. And also Dave its okay to make a song that's 5 minutes or less come on. Also multitracking your scatting is bullshit.
another hour of Korn? aRe yOU rEaDY?!?! The drum and bass tones dovetail really nicely together. Crazy to think this was '94. Shoots And Ladders is pretty cool.
I am into this! I vaguely remember listening to this after finding another Tally Hall album, maybe Good & Evil, definitely because of Turn the Lights Off ? A very cool and weird little album.
Yea this is killer. It's Alright, I Feel It is a great track. This was an absolute delight.
This is pretty rad. at the very least its better than fully half of the Brit pop on the regular list.
Ok Steve, we are off to a strong start here. This is The Stroke guy?! Yea this is fun and there is nothing wrong with that.
Boney Iver, you've locked away in your tiny hoooooommmmeeee. Honestly, this sounds like a knockoff Kanye album. Tbh, I have never really been into Bon Iver. Something about his music always feels just so....overworked? overwrought?
Love that intro on Baby Girl. Ungodly Hour is another bop. This album absolutely kills it.
Some solid Canadian Dad rock. Poets, Fireworks, Escape Is At Hand, all incredible tracks. I love the sort of plainspoken lyricism and delivery. Emperor Penguin is a solid closer.
This is good, cool, and relaxing as all get out. The Time On My Hands rendition is a good one.
overstuffed doesn't even begin to describe it.
yea fuck this.
This is really cool. An album filled with refreshing country ballads with real feeling and soul.
There are some solid mid teens synth indie bangers on here.
hell yea, lets go. Security is a great track. Hertz rips.
The mix is a little lean for my taste in this genre. Looking For Somebody (To Love) is a good single, almost like The Bleachers meets Michael Bolton. But I wish that bass and kick had a little more body on the low end in the natural mix. Oh Caroline and I'm In Love With You are limp and overproduced. This album came out hot as a pistol and then totally vanished into the ether.
oh letttsssss gooooooooo. ieuD is way out there. Who ever made this has lost their mind in the greatest way possible. Trip hop samples, opera, killer break downs and an incredible ear for musical pacing. Wow.
I'm into jazz fusion. great drum work by Larnell on this album.
OHHHHH BOOYYYYY. Man! I Feel Like A Woman! earns its credit as an anthem. The guitar tone and work on I'm Holding Onto Love (To Save My Life) is rock solid. This is the soundtrack to every barn party of my youth from its release until like 2004. This album is pop country goodness if that's your thing.
YESSSSS! I love this fucking album. excellent dynamics and mix, great clean guitar tones, honey smooth vocals, crazy synth blats and textures.
This is really cool.
ok buddy, lets take it easy with the cheese tones on that synth. What is Runnin' Outta Luck. Is this homage or is it derivative? "Love is a dragon dressed in suede and leathery?" What in the hell?
Its cool but I didn't find it was super compelling.
I totally forgot she had a career. Run Away With Me is a solid song. Why was I Really Like You a hit? Her stance as a narrator keeps shifting track to track. Like are you vulnerable, heartbroken, in love, over it? It makes it hard to connect with emotionally when there are so many different perspectives that don't have any kind of discernable regularity. its a necessary maturation album.
a solid white boy reggae album. Is it deep? no. Is it ground breaking? no. Is it enjoyable? oh yea.
ehhhh. psych rock for a B horror movie.
Wow this is mega pop. This is really a forward looking album sound, but good god is it sonically grating at times. Though I guess you know its really pushing into something new if it occasionally pisses old guys like me off. Immaterial is club banger. You can definitely hear this album's fingerprints on Chali XCX's BRAT.
a true and thorough jazz blues time.
Lots of like proto heavy emerging sounds. reminds me of the Velvet Underground. Its just not my thing.
I love that kick tone on I Want Your Love. This is hard to put into one camp of electronic music, which is why it feels very scattered sonically.
Woah there cowboy, what is with these drum samples? Wouldn't It Be Good is a hit pitched right down the middle. Drum Talk is WILD. Cloak And Dagger is a fucking bop. This was such a strong 4 star for me that some of the songs deserve a special call out.
yea this is feckin punk rawk. I enjoyed it but cant see myself coming back to it.
As one of my former coworkers used to say "Tomm'd up kid singing about being tomm'd up about some dumb shit." This sucked.
Ornette Coleman coming on the scene and tearing jazz a new asshole is one of my favorite things.
What even the fuck? A charming and occasionally jarring series of vignettes and story telling. Worth a revisit.
I mean sure, I know nothing about Latin rock. but this is really hard to believe the billing as "The White Album for Latin Rock".
This is like listening to your hippie friend at a folk fest campfire. If you are high by they time they take out their synthesizer, its a good time. If you would rather sleep in your tent and try to forget how gross you are, its pretty damn tedious.
A touching tribute, but in a form and package that I don't have much a connection to or a passion for.
Night-Blooming Cereus was a good song. The rest? fine.
Very goth and heavy i guess? Summer Breeze cover was....unexpected. Broadly, I think it falls prey to a really thin 90's metal mix that just doesn't seem to gel sonically.
Yea this is absolutely should be on the regular list, but glad it got picked up by the listeners. A real high water mark for nu metal.
Like a French Kate Bush. pretty cool.
oh come on. The drum work? incredible. The whole album is basically a sonic time capsule of when pop metal jumped the shark. this is the metal kid equivalent to ska. Mother of christmas I hate that album.
This is about the funkiest I have ever heard a bunch of dudes from the 90s get.
What is this trash? See Eat It Up Worms Hero. This is like a goofy carnival hosted by a stadium rock version of The Smurfs. Why do their vocals sound like that? and that's side 1. Side Two starts with Dirty Boy doing more of the same and boy is that ending vocal harmony held forever. Nurses Whispering Versus is actually a song I can get down with. Wow I am happy that is over.
This is cool, though understood none of it. The Portuguese is cool to listen to.
Halfway through and this is a down beat indie record like a lot of the rest. I don't have a good ear for this genre and i don't think it has improved after getting through the project. This sounds so very generic. Comforting Sounds is like a downbeat Killers track.
Yea there was a time I thought John Cage was cool too. There is something sort of hauntingly beauty to these songs, see Being It. But boy does this thing overstay its welcome with the bonus tracks, and the closer on the regular album Let's Go Swimming is no prized peach either. Fuck this thing.
just an album of bummer songs.
Yea this is cool but its so outside my regular musical palette that I have no idea what to do with it or what to rate it.
This is a really cool showcase to see what the punk kids really have. It serves as a fun idea and a challenge to 4 chord bands to ask "What kind of music do you really want to make?"
This opening track is such a banger. Wow this album is such a sonic blender. They are really taking as many sounds from the 2000's and 2010's as they can. Billy Knows Jamie is a honest to god nu-metal song. And then I Got My Tooth Removed is a thirds wave ska/ carnival polka song? Wow what a cool album.
RV is a weirdo song. This album is odd sounding, like somewhere between Freaky Styley by the Chili Peppers and the Black Album by Metallica. There's a song called Crack Hitler? come on. And the Easy Cover? this is a hard pass from me, dawg.
Iggy Live bringing the power and the DANGER. Way to antagonize the crowd Iggy, I wish I sounded this good if people were throwing shit at me. 1! 2! FUCK YOU PRICKS! Dude is there a riot happening in the background?! This is an insane record.
This is very easy to listen to.
This is cool but not my thing. Great vocal tones!
Losing My Religion is still a monster hit. Shiny Happy People is also a great tune. The non singles are not super impressive.
Christian rockers Switchfoot do the contemporary music. Though they do you a kindness on the opening track Meant To Live by talking around the whole Jesus bit. But goddamn this cheese ball.
Holy god Bruce, you sound like a really aggressive Tom Waits. After that 2 hour tour de force, my ears are tired and sore. That man rocked the shit out of those brits.
I've heard this album before, a real triumph of artistic vision and fucking freaky reality. A complete masterpiece.
Cool easy indie jazz fusion. Pines is a nice song. The whole album stays in this dreamlike easy downbeat indie space sonically, so if you are up for it; it delivers for 70ish minutes
People Watching sounds like a British, softer Bruce. The sax also adds to the comparison
ALL RIGHT! TMBG are the greatest nerdiest musicians in the game and really any of their albums could be on this list. When Will You Die is such a rad song. What a goofball album.
The guitar tone is very much indicative of the mid 2000s combined with a snappy articulate melodies with a fair amount of variety of sonic textures thrown in. I don't find it super captivating but its nice. The First Five Times is a song where all these elements come together for me. Reminds me of a Canadian style Death Cab For Cutie.
French classic punk
Big Coheed vibes on this record. about halfway between a Broadway musical and a progressive rock record. The full experience is getting into the story and understanding the characters involved and i just cant do that working.
cool album but concept albums just aren't my thing. great bass and dynamics work.
Very cool.
Okay the opening has my attention. a slow ambient intro into a swampy blues piano/guitar combo. Okay I am bought in when it hits Eden. Inheritance I'm not such a fan of. I Believe In You is a similar disappointment. Really the back half squanders what was a really promising sonic start.
The lyrics one the first track are kinda wild. Like most Arctic Monkeys work, watch it as it goes way waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay over my head.
ewwwwwwwwwww. My issues with John Mayer are many, the first of which is his "whaaaaaaaaawnnn" delivery. This album was the high water mark for camp fire guitar players.
I never knew they were Canadian! An absolutely rock solid emo album, though that screamer sounds like he is in PAIN.
Never really found anything I enjoyed much with this band and this album is no exception.
Love a good prepared piano track in Bells For Her. Like a mix between Sara Bareilles and Kate Bush. Meh.
Cool Texas country from a time long gone by.
Teenagers indeed scare the shit outta me.
Scratchy aggressive indie rock progenitors. This album comes without any of the smarmy, tongue in cheek I'm better than you trappings of some of the later stuff, so it has this very aggressive shambling sound. Truckers Atlas is very, very weird.
slick 80s bops with punchy horns. needs a revisit.
YAY! fabulous album. I might say something stupid exposes just how heartfelt this thing is. Charli taking over was well deserved, I think the finally the world caught up to her hyperpop DJ sensibilities. Mean girls hit me in another way this listen through.
what a goofy album. in a cool way.
cool concept roger, but I'm not a concept albums kinda guy.
a selection of jaunty tunes for jaunty boys.
This album is outrageous for 1998. What a tastemaker this album became. As a dyed in the wool not indie kinda guy, i appreciate the crap out of this album. I don't know that I love it, but the impact alone is huge.
Honk shooooooooo. Probably hard for guys that need to use boner pills now. Lots of shredding on Mind Over Matter.
This is cool.
I love this fucking album. The sampling is so atmospheric and the DOOM's flow is so natural.
This album is pretty everywhere. Drifter In The Dark is set up nicely. Goddamn this album is all over the map! what the heck am i supposed to do with this thing.
Okay some prog metal. Change was good. The whole thing didn't feel super distinctive from like a Tool or a Dream Theatre album.
A cool modern pop punk album. Loads of familiar tones in this one.
a cool gaelicesque folk ensemble serving that crispy soulful 90s melange. Like Dave Matthews without the pretention.
New Sensation and Devil Inside is a gnarly track 2 3 pairing. Then into Need You Tonight? Are you kidding me? This is such an awkward spot for music for me. It's almost charming but there is something just so.......
really appropriate name on this album, as its out there. Stretchy, choppy almost anti-grooves. Wow this is really rhythmically out there
Ok this is mix is aggressively poor. These guitars are just grating. Holy shit what a chore to listen to.
very cool sister sledge sorta vibes, but really quite dated sounding.
YESSSSSSSSSSS! ~SURPRISE~!!!!!!! Some great hits on this like Party Out Of Bounds, Quiche Lorraine, and Private Idaho.
This is a really cool hip electronic album. Jean Leloup's Dirty Talk is a weird song. But its like a DJ's DJ record. Lots of crazy samples all over the place. Stepchild is also super fun. With a song with tons of references to the Muppets, what isn't to like on this thing?!
This is a foundational album and I am not into it.
Sounds like some foundational early 2000s indie. Sound Of Settling is karaoke goals. Really melancholic and poignant.
Reggae MOOSIC JA. The dub music always just sounds the same to me but its a cool groove for knocking shit out.
Hey its my suggestion! Total masterpiece, obvi.
This is really cool. requires a revisit.
Oh bother. This throws a lot of sonics at the wall during these long, amorphous songs with spoken word, oboes, and death rattles.
hilarious that someone suggested this. a landmark for punk and ska but this thing sounds so terrible.
no song over 3 minutes and most under two? what the hell is this, a punk record? good god what tired stupid fucking song writing. choke on a cock, Adam, this is like listening to a hipster in williamsburg sing about being a sensitive horny loser and being a dumb pile of bullshit. Fuck that album.
bland and totally missable.
Very wild and self indulgent. a real record for the fans, casuals will be a little bored.
ahhhh sure
absolutely excellent flow, through I didnt find it as arresting as some other artists in the same space.
Monkey Trick has a good opening. But thats about it. Lounge lizard guitar tones, a mix that has inaudible bass and also somehow the vocals are buried? Boo hiss.
A sitar on Air? introducing your band on the first song? Get fucked pal. Late 60s drivel.
This reminds me a lot of Tally Hall or the Moldy Peaches. Really wild fun lyrically dense songs.
World War Blues is cool. Similar flow to MC Lars. Motherfuckers (Bring You Down) is a great song. Metal Band is also real good.
Ok, this is just not my thing.
Meh.
some RNB that just sorta happened at me.
mehs all round for these lads.
Talking Heads on the top of the world. Nothing better.
Yea this really sounds like proto emo!
This is more of that rock that is so very 90s its almost painful. very pop commercial stuff. Sport And Religion give big U2 vibes. The Metal Song is very much not fucking metal. That's a docked star.
Oh god what a way to title your pop album the douchiest thing you could possibly think. This also reminds me of the worst ex I ever had so this thing is really batting at a disadvantage. I think if i can survive the two annoying lead singles. I don't hate Alone Together as a pop song, though the melody line is a little dull. Young Volcanoes might as well have been written by Imagine Dragons. Save Rock and Roll with Elton John? fuuuuuuuccccckkkkkk offfffff.
I'm digging the mix on the opening track. Super solid album! the songs are a little generic lyrically but a really fun listen!
Soft rocking from out of time. its a little over produced in that way that a lot of the soft rock of the era.
Yay! Back when crust punk was still cool and not as gross.
yep its TOOL alright. I do like a lot of the newer, more organic textures integrated with their more punchy tight bass tones and synths.
hey its that hit band from the 90s! what happened to their career? oh. It's still a great album with some of the most singable singles they ever produced.
I'm not much for metal core so its kinda flat for me.
very much an underground sounding album. reminds me a lot of MF Doom. The last couple tracks are pretty annoyingly positive and almost preachy, especially Making Progress.
yea homeboy has problems.
pretty forgettable electro pop.
This is a super cool George Clinton inspired album.
Jon Baptiste, you are an icon. What the heck is this album?
good lord this is pretty dull.
Mom country rock for sure.
YESSSSS KING GIZZZZZZ. Such a fun time bendy album.
This moody distant brit rock fits the mood after a weekend of fun and stupid love life drama
how the heck does Te Quiero have almost half a billion streams?!? I did not see the appeal of this album.
You know, the lyrics of Phish are think the worst part. skillful musicianship sure, but the lyrics are really awful. And I get bored of this incessant noodling. What the fuck is Tweezer?
This is really pretty rad. Though it is hard for me to separate one chant from the next, to my ears they sound very similar.
man whatever the hell that was.
funky bloopy new wave.
oh yea baby. American Jesus is such an anthem. Skyscraper is one of my favorite songs ever.
man whatever.
This is a new album for me but Hey, It's Your Funeral Mama is very attention grabbing.
There are some cool tracks on here, Life Is Just A Tire Swing, Makin' Music For Money, A Pirate Looks At Forty (even if its kinda gross). An icon for Florida Boomers all over, just getting drunk and doing boomer shit until they die. Sick.
Lots of external references, lots of loud noisy indie rocking. Not my thing but it was fine.
This is such a goofy little listen.
Await Rescue is fucking radical! 23kid is also very good. Climbing on Roofs (desperate edit) another absolute cracking track! What an absolutely killer album!
I. The Worst Guys is pretty good. I broadly don't have a good lens for modern hip hop but his flow is very melodic.
Yea I can dig this album. Disco Yes is a song I have absolutely heard before.
I don't like this album. As a formational hardcore album it deserves to be on the list but lord I find it a slog. With the sole exception of Suburban Home, that track rips. Hope is the other good track on here, the rest is trash.
