Groan. Okay so Dave's music has a lot of baggage for me, so he is perpetually an artist that I just cannot for the life of me give a fair listen to. There is a lot of good texture sonically, I just cant take Dave's vocal delivery, texture, or really anything about it seriously. This is the guy that literally took a shit on Chicago. When he gets the orchestra involved on Halloween its overstuffed. The Stone is good. Its just this kitchen sink over the top instrumentation. See Crush. And also Dave its okay to make a song that's 5 minutes or less come on. Also multitracking your scatting is bullshit.

Some solid Canadian Dad rock. Poets, Fireworks, Escape Is At Hand, all incredible tracks. I love the sort of plainspoken lyricism and delivery. Emperor Penguin is a solid closer.

The mix is a little lean for my taste in this genre. Looking For Somebody (To Love) is a good single, almost like The Bleachers meets Michael Bolton. But I wish that bass and kick had a little more body on the low end in the natural mix. Oh Caroline and I'm In Love With You are limp and overproduced. This album came out hot as a pistol and then totally vanished into the ether.

OHHHHH BOOYYYYY. Man! I Feel Like A Woman! earns its credit as an anthem. The guitar tone and work on I'm Holding Onto Love (To Save My Life) is rock solid. This is the soundtrack to every barn party of my youth from its release until like 2004. This album is pop country goodness if that's your thing.

It makes it hard to connect with emotionally when there are so many different perspectives that don't have any kind of discernable regularity. its a necessary maturation album.

Wow this is mega pop. This is really a forward looking album sound, but good god is it sonically grating at times. Though I guess you know its really pushing into something new if it occasionally pisses old guys like me off. Immaterial is club banger. You can definitely hear this album's fingerprints on Chali XCX's BRAT.

Yea there was a time I thought John Cage was cool too. There is something sort of hauntingly beauty to these songs, see Being It. But boy does this thing overstay its welcome with the bonus tracks, and the closer on the regular album Let's Go Swimming is no prized peach either. Fuck this thing.

The guitar tone is very much indicative of the mid 2000s combined with a snappy articulate melodies with a fair amount of variety of sonic textures thrown in. I don't find it super captivating but its nice. The First Five Times is a song where all these elements come together for me. Reminds me of a Canadian style Death Cab For Cutie.
Big Coheed vibes on this record. about halfway between a Broadway musical and a progressive rock record. The full experience is getting into the story and understanding the characters involved and i just cant do that working.

His breakout album, god Better Together is like seared into my mind in a very unpleasant way. His laid back beachy vibes makes him feel like this generations Jimmy Buffet. Breakdown almost made me physically sick from the collective wave of memory. God I hated this album when it came out and now i somehow hate it more. though Jack's voice is pleasant. so on its merits, without baggage, its fine. but dear lord this was difficult for this listener.

As a pop fan this opening track is a total banger. Its structured a lot more like a pop or hip hop record with all the guest stars, but Poppy and Electrical Callboy being on tracks 1 and 2 are so cool. Its like the perfect mix of brutal beat downs, cheesy beginner level Japanese elements, and perfect compression. Algorism rules.
Like a band from out of time. This sound is such a throwback to the 60's sound in a modern jam form. I guess thinking about it that way, there is no way that this could have been from the 60's because all its stylistic tendencies are sharpened and modified to fit this format. So a very modern old sound? People Everywhere (Still Alive) deserves its single status. Kinda crazy to think this is a power trio.

Mind Train is like a primordial girl art rock big bang that spawns people like Bjork, or Grimes, or other total lunatics every so often. god is it a workout to listen to. It would be much more listenable if someone took just a little off the top of Yoko's piercing fucking shrieking! lord above, the critics that like this slop are the most unwell people. Yoko doing an impression of somewhere between a seagull, a tea kettle, and a baby for 22 minutes on Fly was not on my bingo card this morning. What a horrifying waste of my time.

Produced by the guy that would found Trans Siberian Orchestra. Shreddy metal with lots of high tenor wailing if that's what you are into. Title track is probably the best one on here. The anti drug anthem White Witch might actually do more damage by being a genuinely fun track that would make people want to do cocaine. You hear a lot of the inspiration for And Nothing Elese Matters by Metallica on Last Dawn. This grew on me as it went by.

Loved the musical. This is the cool origin story of that. Still has that sort of ramshackle Nawlins sound on Way Down Hadestown, and definitely has more boogie. Hey Little Songbird is somehow more creepy. Wait For Me always makes me cry, this version is no exception, especially with the voice of Bon Hiver fitting perfectly into the context of the song.
You Don't Know How It Feels is the ultimate loser slacker anthem, and i mean that in praise. There is something so liberating in how You Wreck Me sounds. The end of the albums is weaker, House In The Woods is a little too self indulgent for me.
I don't know the words but I resonate with the music. Super cool album even though it was a bear to find!

Big nostalgia on this one. The first 4 tracks absolutely took over the world. The back half is much more of a mixed affair. Paper Gangster is another highlight. Brown Eyes is just an odd duck in this track listing. and Summerboy is even further afield. Discoheaven is so odd! God 2008 was just a fever dream.
Orozco is a bop. the album is pretty okay all things considered.
