Lady Soul
Aretha FranklinI never heard the rest of this album other than the really popular songs. Although I probably won’t listen to this a lot, I understand the talent of Aretha Franklin.

Good
I’ve never been a massive fan of the late 80s new wave since pop. And Depeche Mode is unique. It’s defining trait is a more avant-garde artistic version of the style of music. The dark voice, while cool, tends to fade in the background and I have a hard time discerning songs from one another. However, as an example of the style of music, this album was pretty Correct.
I split Beatles into two camps - 50s/60s pop music and odd, experimental 60s/70s music. I think this one splits the difference. Songs with substance but also easy to listen to
Good
Not my "Jam" but it's clean and well orchestrated
Meh
I honestly loved this one. You can hear a lot of Elliott Smith influences, especially a great example of a more sophisticated version of 60s pop
Nope
I can appreciate it but I had to turn it off because I found it unlistenable while trying to do work. It's too experimental, and half the songs end up in a carcaphony of cymbals an noise.
Classic
Great sounds, great songs. I think this was the first time I was exposed to the concept of "low-fi". I marked this as 4 since I don't think I love listening to the whole album. The basic drum beats get repetitive.
Pretty good find, and good story. I like the references back to the postpunk era that I like a lot.
I went from “oh wow, they put an arbitrary hardcore punk album in this list and it’s nothing special” to “this might be one of the most beautiful punk albums I’ve ever heard.” Orchestrations of horns and strings, musical genres woven in you wouldn’t expect, anthemic punk choruses. This was 5 years after social distortion’s breakout album and the same year of Rancid’s album. I’d put this up there with both.
Great artist great album
Meh
Holy Guitar!
Definitely sounds like early 90s alternative, but this came interestingly early in 1989. Reminds me of a British REM. I like it for a certain type of mood.
Definitely as described.
The Who are good but you can have too much Who
Great guitar but a great performer. Rea rock and roll
Sonic garbage. I remember the feel of this era, but there were bands that could feel anti-vanity and anti-establishment and still be melodic. This feels like they’re making fun of music, not evolving it
Good early 80s punk
This album I’m pretty sure would be amazing at any point in time in the past or in the future. I saw Fatboy Slim perform at the 930 club in Washington DC and it was electric. I had always previously passed off mixing and DJing as less creative as live music creation but oh man, what a show.
Great unique album to have in the background. Makes happy
I didn’t realize how old this album was. I guess because I didn’t know about it until the 90s. Definitely set the stage and tone for what happened with 90s alternative.
I liked the next album better, but this is good-mood ambient techno
This is between the two greatest Radiohead albums, and in retrospect you can hear them bridging their identity from one to the other. This still has the 90s alt-rock snarl of Pablo Honey but they play with rhythms and instruaments that will ultimately get them to Ok Computer, one of my favorite, most innovate albums of all time. I truly love this album and reminds me of my early college year dorms.
Timeless.
Good album but there are better Elvis Costello albums.
English folk ? I guess it’s a thing
I never heard the rest of this album other than the really popular songs. Although I probably won’t listen to this a lot, I understand the talent of Aretha Franklin.
All this English folk makes it feel like I’m living in a Wes Anderson movie
Not sure I need to hear this before I die. I think at the time it was innovative? But hasn’t aged well
Classic
Don’t understand why I needed to listen to this before I die
Really couldn’t get into this. Delicate and emotional soft rock.
Definitely defines an era and genre. If I was to tell someone what good melodic thrash metal was, I’d point to this album and a couple metalloca albums
folk with a snarl
Big No. Is ambient whining a genre now?
Interesting sound coming from 1969. I get that this was the start of a movement. However, the album itself wasn't great. I bet it was awesome to be at the show, but not that great to listen to with only audio.
I can’t not love this album. It summed up our mini generation and a sensibilities we had as 8/9 gradesrs.
