Album Summary
Beach Samba is a 1967 studio album by Astrud Gilberto, arranged by Eumir Deodato and Don Sebesky. Astrud Gilberto was born Astrud Evangelina Weinert, the daughter of a Brazilian mother and a German father, in Salvador in the Brazilian state of Bahia, on March 29, 1940. She was raised in Rio de Janeiro. Her father was a language professor, and she became fluent in several languages. Astrud sang the songs The Girl from Ipanema and Corcovado on the 1963 album, Getz/Gilberto, featuring João, Getz, and Antônio Carlos Jobim. While it was her first professional recording, Astrud Gilberto was not entirely a novice. She grew up immersed in music; her mother played multiple instruments. Gilberto sang often with João in Brazil, including a concert performance at the Faculdade de Arquitetura, part of one of the leading universities in Rio de Janeiro. Her whispery voice and steadfast approach to singing played a significant role in popularizing "The Girl from Ipanema", earning a Grammy Award for Record of the Year and a nomination for Best Vocal Performance by a Female.

The older I get the more I enjoy Easy Listening.
Kiva albumi!
Rakastan bossa novaa. Tää oli ihana. Ääni hunajaa ja brasilianportugali on niin kaunista. Mielenkiintoiset sovitukset. I love it.
Really not a great sign when Qobuz warns me right up front that this is "one of Gilberto's less impressive." and I have to agree. This is glorified elevator music.
I have no idea why this album is on the list: a mediocre singer performs naive songs in a language she obviously doesn't use in everyday life. Even though this formula had worked well before with “The Girl From Ipanema", it doesn't make sense as an album because maybe two tracks would have been enough. As it is, “Beach Samba” doesn’t even get boring - you’re more likely to find yourself wondering the whole time when the real songs are going to come. Spoiler: they never do. How is one supposed to fairly rate something like this among all those world-class albums (well, not all of them, but that’s basically the standard)?
Nothing special, but I enjoyed listening to her voice enough to give this 3 stars
Pretty groovy, but after about 10 minutes I’d had enough.
I love stuff like this
Although pleasant, this album struck me as flat and emotionless for most of the runtime. I appreciate the relaxed sound to an extent, but I just found it to be a little dull. This one's fine, but I probably won't be coming back to it. Favorite track: "Não Bate O Coração"
Pleasant
#503 / 1089 Heard before? ❌ Revisit? ✅ Ah, this sounds really light an airy and sunny! Apparently this is a bit americanised pop version of that she is really about, but I don't mind the easy listening aspects since bossa nova nor samba are not really my strong suites. Also learned that she is "the girl from Ipanema", or at least sung that famous track. Some of the songs were quite weird decisions, like the marching one and the one with her kid, but otherwise I enjoyed this one. And I'm very happy there is any music outside US, albeit that this too was aimed at the North American market. I'd put this somewhere in the 3.6/5 range.
Nice singing but nothing spectacular
The pleasant sounds of 1960s counter-counterculture. Music untroubled by time or politics. You can't spend your whole life soaking in a bath like this, but yes we need it every now and then.
Background music
Immediately recognized her voice from Bossa Nova music. On this album her voice is the highlight of course, it's lovely.
Brazilian jazz? Hmm... This was OK. It didn't really inspire any emotions in me beyond mild interest in the sounds. The singing was alright, if somewhat like a deeper, jazzy Bjork. The lyrics were generally mediocre and sometimes plain stupid, and the rest of the album isn't entertaining enough to make up for it(unlike yesterday's Anthrax album). It probably does belong on the list to an extent, but it's not the best thing I've ever heard.
Started out pleasant and inoffensive enough, until the godawful A Banda (Parade) started and destroyed the good will. After that point it delivered...more of the same. It may be only 28 minutes long but it got old, fast.
It’s good. I like samba. Not sure why so many samba albums are on this list though.
Not my favorite bossa nova record.
Perfectly solid Samba album. A Banda (Parade) is pretty funny because I feel like I've heard this one before but I'm not sure I have, and I enjoyed how You Didn't Have to Be So Nice felt like it was sung by a mom and daughter. Not much else to say, but pretty good overall.
kann es nicht anhören
I'm pretty sure you could mix and match tracks from any of the 4 bossa nova albums I've had so far, and you'd still have half an hour of elevator music that takes you somewhere, but says nothing, and does nothing once you're there. So nothing against Astrud, but at this point the nova has rubbed off for me.
A whole album that sounds like something from Animal Crossing? I've got my bells ready. Tell Tom Nook he's got a new villager coming. 4/5
Love her voice. Been a fan of Brazilian jazz forever. Was glad to see her pop up on this list.
It's fine. It's samba. It sounds like elevator/hold music. I didn't hate it but it wasn't especially interesting. Astrid Gilberto has a lovely voice.
Perfectly pleasant, but mostly just background music
Some mornings I wake up excited at the prospect and potential of the album of the day. Today was one of those, and my excitement has been quickly stifled.
I've never even heard of Astrud Gilberto. Honestly I despise this cover art, she doesn't look real. 01. Stay Very nice and smooth. 02. Misty Roses Was fine. Not really my kind of jam. 03. The Face I Love This is more like it! This is really pretty, and my favorite lyrics so far! 04. A Banda (Parade) Feels too childish for me. Like it's explaining what a parade is. 05. Oba, Oba Meh. I didn't feel a thing whilst listening. 06. Canoeiro Boring. 07. I Had The Craziest Dream Fun lyrics, but also boring to me. Not bad, just meh. 08. Beach Samba (Bossa Na Praia) Cute little instrumental. This album so far is feeling very samey. 09. My Foolish Heart I really like this song, but I don't know why. It's not very different from the rest of the album, so I'm not sure why I enjoy it more than most. 10. Dia Das Rosas (I Think Of You) A fairly romantic song. Is one of my favorites so far. 11. You Didn't Have To Be So Nice Cute. That's it. I don't get why there's a little kid. 12. Não Bate O Coração Another boring one. Astrud is a good singer, that's no doubt. But this album is so incredibly one note and boring to me. I like faster jazz, I guess.
Nice listening. Not sure how much substance is here but it does make me pine for 60s California
Bit of a disappointing effort given her spots on other albums. The songs that lean more into 1960s Lounge Lizard and away from the latest studio effort from Doris Day are the highlights.
A pleasant bit of bossa nova, but inevitably, if you're always on vacation, are you ever on vacation? This tries some twists on the formula with Parade and You Didn't Have to be So Nice. They should have stuck to what they're good at, minus half a star (2.5)
Wait a year and two samba records come along together.
This a perfectly inoffensive album. It’s also not at all exciting. Her delivery sounds very blah…..You didn’t have to be so nice was annoying asf.
This is so kitsch. An absolute period piece and difficult to rate. Sorry, but of this type of music from this era, it's not the best
She’s an amazing vocalist, I’d never heard this album before but I immediately recognized her from Getz/Gilberto’s The Girl from Ipanema. This album is better than that though. Really well written stuff all the way through. Some bizarre inclusions like the literal circus music in the middle of the album bring it down a bit but hey some people probably like it.
A great jazz vocalist, one of my least favorite genres - my father's cocktail music.
Very pretty and safe had an amazing voice, but a little bit too smooth for my tastes.
nice easy listen only 27 mins too 6/10 best song - misty roses
Anteeksi nyt mutta mikä ihme tämä albumi on olevinaan? Miksi tällainen on tehty ja vielä enemmän; miksi tämä on tällä albumilistalla? 1/5
I was expecting samba because of the album title, but instead this was jazzy and grand (the kind of theatrical jazz that reminds me of Sinatra's style). Gilberto's voice is soft and beautiful, and it helps lend a coffee-shop quality to the songs. Overall, this album gave me a warm and peaceful feeling on the dreary afternoon I listened to it.
Perfectly pleasant. Does what it says on the tin
This is daydreaming music. Meandering music. An aimless walk where you just think for a while. That’s what this made me think of. I liked it a lot. Ending the album with “It’s A Lovely Day Today” is kinda beautiful in a way.
The Brazilian accent is quite something, but I just didn't like the music.
This sounds like an album Megan would listen to on Mad Men.
i liked the vibe. I have a soft spot for yacht music
Lovely voice. Pleasant album.
not bad but not re-listenable
I see the word “inoffensive” a lot in these reviews. I can’t think of a better word to describe this one. Classic 3 star.
The voice is undeniable: light, unaffected, almost amateur in the best sense. But as a Brazilian I found the English hard to get past: bossa nova is built around the way Portuguese sits on the beat, and translated into English something essential goes missing. Lovely to hear, but not a record I connected with. 2/5.
It's not a 5 for creativity or ingenuity or anything its a 5 for a very specific homework kinda safe vibe. Parade a banda made it a 4, actually took it to a because at first i thought it would be like a safe to leave on vinyl record while you drink coffee with anybody but that mood shift is abrupt and strange and would probably come on right when youre trying to cum and ruin the whole thing
music is love
Not a bad album never heard of it before I quite like her voice I like the instruments a lot kinda jazzy it does have some weird tracks but most of the tracks are chilled and fun solid album if not exactly to preferences
I hate samba. I hate her voice. But this isn't as bad as that other samba album so...two stars
I am coming around to a good casual Samba album Fave track: Tristeza
Inoffensive samba/bossa nova. Not a fan of the album cover - quite off-putting. Similar feelings about 'Parade (A Banda)'. 2.5/5
Background music
I enjoyed this. Really chill at times and fun at others.
Ugh. I can think of at least two things about this record’s title that lead me to believe I’m going to hate every second of this experience. Yep, it sucks. It sounds like the soundtrack for getting roofied in the 60s. I feel like I’m about to get seduced by Austin Powers. 4/10
An album that's included because it led to the popularity of another, much more famous song? Okay, I guess. Minus one star for that fuckass kid singing on this album. Ruined my morning.
Love when the album title describes exactly what this album’s sound is Gilberto’s got a great voice, was thinking man it’d be nice to feature more of her when we had the one that had The Girl From Ipanema and this one delivered. I thought the variety was actually pretty damn good, which is a pretty common complaint I have with similar genres; I think there’s a good balance of bossa-nova sound, slower more emotional tracks, and some higher energy ones. Oba, Oba is probably my favorite track on here, just a really pleasant song I don’t really have a lot to complain about, but if I had to come up with something it’d have to be that it feels a bit bloated, where even though it’s only 17 songs it feels a lot longer than that, and I think there’s a couple tracks that just feel like filler. There’s some great stuff on here but there’s just enough mediocre tracks on here that I have to point it out Not a bad showing at all though, absolutely great album to listen to in the morning and even though it’s not the most polished it’s just a very pleasant record that uplifts the soul
not all albums have to be historically significant and this is one of them. we're sipping cocktails on the beach, lounging while reading the paper. the classic 60s bossa nova experience. the vocals have nothing technical or well done about them, and that sells the easy breeziness of the music. but alas. you can see the gimmicks showing up here, what with the duet with her 6-year-old and Parade and it really kind of cheapens the whole thing. No kids or harmonicas allowed on the beach!
Literally the genre associated with this sort of music is "easy listening", so I'd be a fool to try to knock this record for not taking enough risks, blah blah blah etc. And I never would, especially since a lot of this is tightly performed and beautiful bossa nova music. I think Gilberto's is soft and gorgeous, but most of all it's personable. I hear a person behind the voice, with flaws and personality, not just an attempt at singing the best they can but singing to reach others, and I really get that from this album. "Misty Roses" has a lovely horn and string backing for Astrud's reverbial serenades, while the jauntier "The Face I Love" wants you to go skipping off into the sunset. I don't think it's supposed to be the most seriously focused album from front to back, but some of the writing is pretty lackluster. Especially on "Canoeiro", which I could've sworn the instrumental and vocals were recorded separately without any interaction because that pulsing horn section does not fit the vocal melody at all. Really weird, and it happens on more of this record than it should, but overall this is a pleasant little album to chuck on for some great background noise to a beautiful day at the beach. Good vibes
Soothing and pleasant. And I'm pretty sure that some of these tracks were used by [adult swim] for some of their interlude segments.
If I ever hosted a “soirée” and I wanted it to be “swanky,” there’s a few selections on here I’d put on. Wasn’t the worse time
Save us from shitty English bands, Astrud
Out of tune voice with parade and you didnt have to be so nice being standout awful songs
Album 314. Beach Samba — Astrud Gilberto (1967) Very pleasant and easy-listening bossa nova. It somehow reminded me of Shira Small's music despite the genres being different. But the music itself is quite overlapping: it's airy, light and just comforting. 3/5 No liked songs
My introduction to Astrud Gilberto. Great vocalist, 60s lofi, easy listening. I can't say any song actually stands out for me... Rating: Strong 6
Loved the random little girl cameo
Grocery store music.
I am enjoying listening to this.
Potential not met
I have never once seen someone that looks THIS much like a mii
When this album stuck to safer waters, it was inoffensive, pleasant even. Gilberto has a lovely velvet voice that fits so well to relaxed bossa nova style instrumentation. In that way you can consider part of this album definitive of the genre, but still nothing feels earth shattering or even archetypal. At most, the highs are competent and fine to listen to. Unfortunately this came packaged with a few tracks that were frankly awful. I really wanted to skip "Parade (A Banda)" and "You Didn't Have to Be So Nice," and there was nothing so positive to ease the displeasure in this case.
mooi maar zéér braafjes tussen de lijntjes gekleurd
Listened before? No Familiar with the artist? No Thoughts: - Nice, chill vibes, kind of background music for me... - I don't know if I'd call it "must listen" but it was pleasant enough; I enjoyed her voice.
A fun samba album. Great version of “My Foolish Heart”.
The album is okay, but a little too samey and there's some bizarre songs on it as well. Middle of the road.
Easy listening but slow
!!!
This is lovely!
What a fun introduction to samba music.
Totally not my thing. It reminds me of background sound in 60s shows/movies. Her voice doesn’t hold my attention. “Misty Roses” had some odd lyrics. “Flowers often cried” and “Too blue to lust, but too lovely not to try.” “The Face I Love” moved onto daffodils. “A Banda” lists every type of parade there could be. I’m confused how this made a best of list. I’m sure someone really likes it, but really an odd choice.
This was fun. To my untrained ear, it was Girl from Ipanema in different variations.
Thanks to my time with this list, the word "samba" now fills me with dread, and if this album contains another version of The Girl From Ipanema I may have an aneurysm, think it is this most-featured song across all albums on this list, and it has to appear on at least half of the samba albums. Well, there is no Girl From Ipanema and the album is less than half an hour long, but for me these are the only points in its favour. I just really can't stand bossa nova, you guys. Music to play over stock footage of 1960's tourist destinations.
3.3 I have no clue on where this falls in the samba/bossa nova world, but enjoyable enough listen
The album is too lightweight for my tastes, even when considering that it's samba.
Nice throwaway background summer music, very pleasant
Absolute classic by a mediocre singer
Asturd has a beautiful voice, and this variation of samba from the mid-60s is classic cocktail jazz of a certain ilk, but it's stuck in its time and doesn't do anything for me 60 yrs later.
3.8
Certainly a pleasant listen, but nothing I would really be into listening to again.Nice voice and the recording and musicianship is fine, but it just doesn’t really go anywhere and gets boring quickly.
Pretty inoffensive but doesn’t really set the world alight. It was nice to listen to on a Sunday Morning walk in the sun but it doesn’t really do anything different to the other albums like this on the list.
It’s so agreeable that it’s almost offensive. Not sure if there is really anything that stands out about this. This is my biggest gripe with this list. I may hate some of these albums but at least it’s something different and worth listening to. This is just a nothing burger.
Lovely
i'm sorry but i'm allergic to her honey voice and this mellow music. it gives me the shivers!!!
