five. this is so vibes
What a soothing voice, and I love the calm bossa nova vibe! Very "Girl from Impanena" (which features the vocals of Astrud Gilberto). I enjoyed this a lot!
I‘ve listened to to this at the beach- can recommend.
An absolutely gorgeous and lovely samba record. Timeless.
Like Christmas music
Lovely!
Smooth and beautiful. Parades was a little simple and the child's track didn't land for me, but the rest were quintessential enough to elevate the album
Only song I know is The Girl from Ipanema.
Spitze
Great vibe
Tolle Musik, super aufgenommen, hat richtig Spaß gemacht und mich sehr gut unterhalten. Das Cover langweilig. Hätte mir dieses Album niemals gekauft. Danke für diese Aktion
absolutely gorgeous and breezy bossa sounds. many tracks just feel like the wind is blowing through your hair as you lounge in the summer sun with a tropical fruit drink in hand. this album's a lot of fun especially if you like your bossa samba smooth dancin' tracks.
wtf was with that creepy kid? Otherwise solid relaxing game music
Beautifully dreamy, sweet, and nostalgic, this is the mom vibe I want to have if I am one.
The instrumentation on this album rules. From the flute on the opening track, the drums on Parade, this album has a lot of depth
I feel like I’ve heard of Astrud Gilberto before, but I’m not sure why. I even feel like I recognise this album cover, but it doesn’t seem to be a duplicated album generation. Odd, but ah well. Let’s listen and see if I recognise the songs too! Songs I already knew: none Favourites: all of it I’m not sure if I’ve listened to two ten out of ten albums in a row before, but that has just happened. I loved every minute of this. It was like a soft, easy listening jazz mushed together with samba. Beach Samba stood out as the best for me, but all of this is great. She has such a nice song voice which just makes me feel cosy on the inside. There is nothing I dislike about this.
Love the sound
queen
This is release is far from the best we can found from Astrud Gilberto. I'll rate it with 5 in respect to her whole career.
groovy
This was a perfect album to get after an exhausting new years. I was still high and laying bed and this easy listening was perfect for relaxing. Plus this is just the music I love to listen to when I’m toasted. I registered the next day and it mostly held up aside from the circus song and the song near the end with the kid singing.
I've been a fan of Astrud for years so it's nice to hear this album again.
Just fun.
Perfect for writing i loved it so much
one of my favorites
My fav album yet
her voice is so lovely everything is lovely
nice and calming i thought it was good but then the jazz started and it became awesome
A great record to just sit back and relax. It was just perfect for the lazy Sunday I had.
Sounds like your on a beach hitting by waves of nostalgia. Feels like a precursor to Summer Salt. Rating: 4.6
Phenomenal couldn’t stop moving perfect album to start the workday
This was beautiful samba
Such a short album at 27 minutes Stay- favorite tune. Such bold bass playing by Ron Carter. I think of you -cool time/ feel changes Nao bate o coracao- such a tight groovy minute and a half I had the craziest dream- I like the dreamy sounds at the end My foolish heart- beautiful performance and arrangements
Love this, love her, but they should’ve picked a different record. The one before this with Walter wanderly is probably my fav. Shadow of your smile is good too. But my foolish heart is a masterpiece and this record is stacked with some pretty heavy hitters. Parade I really hated but the rest is pretty good. By the standards of this project this album is like 20/5, but honestly I don’t even think this is one of her better records. 4.8
This was a delight.
I remembered I had an Astrud Gilberto collection album when I listened to this. It had the song "Beach Samba." I've been a fan of her voice and style for a long time, starting from "The Girl from Ipanema," of course. I love that this album has a very smooth 1960s cocktail party vibe, but then suddenly a parade marches through before we go back to our pink squirrels. The duet with her son was also a lovin' spoonful of a detour.
This was fabulous! I love the Beach Samba! (There were just a couple of tracks that I might have suggested not be included because they didn't seem to fit).
I was in a bit of a foul mood earlier today but listening to this, I could only imagine skipping gaily along in a bright yellow sundress stopping only to sniff the blossoming camellias. Delightful.
This is one of the albums I find completely charming and enjoyable - a 5 with no reservations. I have loved listening to Astrud Gilberto for most of my life and this album did not disappoint me. Misty Roses gives The Girl from Ipanema a run for its money - it instantly became one of my favorite songs. Yeah, her duet with her 6-year-old son on The Lovin’ Spoonful’s You Didn’t Have To Be So Nice tilts heavily to the saccharine side, and Parade (A Banda) was a little jolting to the overall mood… still, I still enjoyed them both. I could listen to this all day. And just might.
Acho divertido demais quando alguém de fora, estrangeiro mesmo, apresenta novas músicas brasileiras... adorei, não conhecia mesmo!
lovely
Wowza I sure loved this one. Will return to this again and again I feel. Really neat since I doubt I would have found this album otherwise. Mid to late 60s was such a good time for music. Stay was a great opening. Parade (A Banda) was right up my alley, super enjoyable. Oba oba has that 60s whimsy in sound and lyrics that I am a sucker for. You Didn’t Have To Be So Nice was a cute and pretty little tune!
It’s too short and the marching band song isn’t great, but pretty much everything else is wonderful
This has that old record charm. That trumpet on The Face I Love. I wish this album was like 10x longer.
This is the perfect album for sitting in the hot tub with a drink in your hand. If it wasn’t 6:30am, my coffee would include whiskey.
Very smooth and relaxing, with deceptively amazing musicianship. Definitely a product of its time but that’s not a bad thing.
10/10 I’ll listen to samba any day of the week, easily one of my favorite genres
nice
Very interesting! I like it. I’ve never listened to samba music but it has a really nice vibe.
Awesome voice. Loved it.
This reminds me of Tania Maria who I am pleased to discover is not dead.
Voice as light as air. Songs sway like the breeze
Not too exciting but a lovely lksten
yo this i fire started calm and then a lil more deep and honestly was an amazing listen 8.5/10
I thought "You didn't have to be so nice" was especially pleasant.
adorable musique d'ascenseur, vibe de voiture en été direction le paradis. même chanteuse que "the girl from Ipanema" which makes so much sense. Aussi le genre de musique que je mettrais en lendemain de soirée sous le soleil avec le j du matin
Good voice, good songs, great production
perfect for a hot summers day. then the delight of CORNED BEEF
Her voice is like a fine mist hanging in the air. It affects how the temperature feels, exaggerating the chill or warmth. It surrounds you. Sticks to you. Changes your chemistry.
Really enjoyable but I prefer her singing in Brazilian Portuguese, strangely enough. Also, that song about parades was a little too John Philip Sousa for me.
ahhhh this is the medicine after suffering through Jamiroquai. The sounds of Astrud mean sunny skies, cool breezes and a beer on the beach. Just sway your hips to the music. I love to float on that gentle 60s samba sound. Some oddball choices (Parade, You Didn't Have to Be So Nice) do not detract from a sweet, languid album.
This was nice and chill. I didn't want to like it, but it was just nice simple and easy music. It was a great listen while working. 6/15/26
Not heard this before. Very enjoyable at the correct part of the day.
Very easy to listen to early Bossa album by one of the pioneers of the genre.Harmonically rich and creative, suprisingly good recording quality considering how long ago it was recorded.
samba
She’s only transcendent at a bossa nova tempo for me but I like her enough to 4 the record where she does marching band music and duets with a small child too I guess
Really enjoyed this. There’s a lot of variety and probably the nicest song with a child singing on it I’ve heard (which isn’t saying that much tbh)
I have no real point of comparison, but actually really enjoyed this. Beautiful vocals and super fun. Plus the “songs like this” included The Bloop Bleep song which is a jam.
Fun and cute
Perfect for easy mornings
What a delightful album. It’s not groundbreaking, it’s not edgy or weird, it’s something that would be laying at your cool aunts house while she makes a pitcher of gin and tonic and tells you about that time she lived in a nudist colony.
Beautiful evocative music and vocals. Not really a style of music I would choose to listen to but I enjoyed this (apart from the duet with the child!).
delightful.
Very fun and whimsical
Vert chill album
Música relajante, me encantó, una voz espectacular
Nice type of music, relaxing
this is fun. very 60s by the pool vibe. liked it more than I thought I would.
I felt a little bit cooler after listening to this. Very chill.
I enjoy Bossa Nova quite a bit and this was an enjoyable early morning listen with nice relaxing vibes. Favorite Track - Stay Least Favorite Track - Parade (A Banda) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Brazilian lounge vocals / jazz
This was pretty chill - enjoyed the vibe on this one.
Enjoyed
60s latin jazz. Sang "The Girl from Ipanema”. Chill and vibey pool jazz.
Gilberto has been a proper find for me on this. Weirdly enjoy it !
Relaxing and beautiful! Parade is a little out of place musically, but i get why it’s there. My standouts are Misty Roses, the face i love, my foolish heart and ESPECIALLY you didn’t have to be so nice, what a special track.
After a really rough week, I needed something gentle and whimsical. This is the sort of album that takes you away from your life for a few minutes. Lovely arrangements, subdued vocals, like the soundtrack to some old technicolor movie.
Just the mood I wanted today. A mellow but fun ride.
Good but probs a one time only listen
Very soothing
Exotic and classic
More
Pleasant. Not bad for doing work. Low 4.
Good chill vacation vibe. Nothing distinguishing but easy to chill to if ur in a summer mood
It was good, just came up for me at a very non-beachy time in ohio
Nice easy enjoyable listening.
Mellow but didn't really hit home
Quite nice
Расслабляющий и очень ассоциирующийся с гармонией альбом. Мне понравилось)
Overall Rating - 4.25/5 (8.50/10). Solid Bossa Nova album. The cover of The Lovin' Spoonful was definitely a choice. Parade was also a choice. Love her voice.
Delightful
Æ vet æ hørte på det i går, men æ huske cirka ingenting av det, anna enn at det va hyggelig.
Brasillllll meu brasilll brasileiroooo🇧🇷🔥
I listened to this album on the two hour desert drive to Tucson for AEW Collision. This is the second ____ Samba album I have come across on this list so far, and if these two albums represent different approaches to the genre, I definitely have a slight preference for Jazz over Beach. I think this is more of a reflection on my genre familiarity than anything else, as I have been a fan of jazz music for awhile and have had very little exposure to samba by comparison. But even then, this album is still beautiful, and beach is a perfect descriptor; it sounds like I'm sitting on a folding chair and looking out over the ocean with a mocktail in my hand from a beachside bar (I have never been in this situation, but it feels right). I tend to have an easier time getting on board with the slower tempo, more lyrically-focused songs which particularly highlight Gilberto's warm and inviting voice. This album is simply quite pleasant to listen to, which feels like exactly the vibe it's looking for. Highlights: Misty Roses, Parade (A Banda), I Had The Craziest Dream, My Foolish Heart, I Think Of You, You Didn't Have To Be So Nice, Nao Bate O Corocao
gud
Lovely, easy listening. Astrud has a great voice. This album is mellow and would be great for hanging outside or for cooking dinner.
Fun, pleasant, but what the hell was that random parade march?
Sometimes things just align for better. For this record to come into my life on a blazingly beautiful spring day, sunlight beaming across the park outside my windows and bathing my living room as the birds sing, well it's really been setup to succeed. Because this is hot weather album. It's a day to night album, packed with heat, made for spring days, cinematic road trips in convertibles, 70's movies & summer nights on the beach. What I'm saying is, this record is classic 20th century cinema. Astrud Gilbert's voice is gorgeous, it's lovely. Echo's of Minnie Ripperton in there, perhaps largely due to the arrangement similarities & style. But it's there nonetheless. The track "You Didn't Have To Be So Nice" is so sweet it'd take a heart of stone not to crack an "Aww" listening to it. "My Foolish Heart" and "I Think Of You" got saved straight to my months discovery playlist, always a good sign. And I'll definitely be putting this album on at a dinner party near you soon.
cute
Made it feel 10 degrees warmer on a cold winter’s day. 😎
Very solid Brazilian album with a variety of different styles. Didn’t appreciate the jumpscare but I forgive her. Not mind-blowing, but very good
Buttery and smooth. Really good.
Not sure why a parade and a child needed to pass through the middle of the album but I’ll trust your judgement Astrud Gilberto
Really solid! The parade song was kind of a vibe killer tho ngl
Balancing out with Jimmy because we both wanted to give this a 4.5
I'm willing to bet we all hated Parade and You Didn't Have To Be So Nice. Have to knock it to a 4 for those two tracks, since they create such a harsh vibe reset.
I remember back in my late teens and early 20s, I had a few Verve Records compilations on vinyl that I used to play at weddings for friends, and right from the first track, this album triggered those familiar sounds. I vaguely remembered some of these songs, so listening to this album was definitely a trip down memory lane. Compared to her earlier work from the early 60s, this album starts to slip slightly away from the more traditional bossa nova style that she helped popularize. It lacks some of the jazzier, more complex arrangements from her earlier catalog and instead leans into a more accessible sunshine pop direction. That being said, it’s still a very enjoyable album. It delivers comfort with a softer, more lighthearted tone, but less introspective, and more carefree. Definitely a good listen when you want something warm and easygoing.
I except to dislike it because I don't like bossa nova, and because it's 1967 album, that is not psychedelic rock. But it was fun listen, melodic, joyful, easy and her voice is good. Pleasant surprise!
This was really pleasant. I love samba.
Beautiful 4 - great even among this list
Ok so I was thinking the list algorithm was trying to drive me insane. It's been a bad week for the and me. Then I woke up and hit refresh. This is delightful. Legitimately. Sure Parade is, weird, but her voice is nice and the lightness fits the music well. The sound shows it's age but that is fine and honestly welcome for this album. The album feels like a warm day. It's getting added to the library.
епта что это за ляля такая
Overall rating by me: 7/10 Songs added to the playlist: ,,Stay”, ,,Parade (A Banda)”, ,,I Had The Craziest Dream” Notes: It’s a really good album. A day at the beach or the amusement park? Perfect. Very light, cozy yet warm - it’s as if you can feel the rays of sunshine coming through the melody.
Smooth, makes me feel like I'm cool just for listening to it.
Love me some Samba
This was super wacky. Just when I felt in got a hold on this album it took a new turn. I felt a lot of nostalgia for playing old Sim City games, with its lovely background jazz. I really like this, but felt as though I couldn't quite find my footing.
This was very nice and soothing. Good music and vocals, very smooth.
super duper short but has really good vibes and all that and i love it also coz it’s a bossa nova
Quite the Goddess, Astrud. "Canoeiro" and "Não Bate O Coração" are great.
8/10
Lovely! Her voice floats so smoothly over the excellent samba backing, yet the album has a lot of stylistic variety. Really really enjoyed this one.
Now that we have listened to Getz, Gilberto, and Getz/Gilberto I think Gilberto voice brings a lot to the table in the Getz/Gilberto ecosystem. Maybe one of my favorite voices in all of 1001 albums. I just listened to Jazz Samba right before this so it is very fresh. If that was a high 3, this has to be at least a 4. Has a bit more pace and direction to it that I really enjoyed.
Like honey. Eumir Deodato's contribution keeps it serious, just a wafer thin slice away from cheesy.
Solid album, but never gets to the level where I can rate this a 4.5 or higher. It's a solid 4.
Super feel good album. Short, simple samba that doesn't mess around. A great listen!
heard this on my own earlier this year Stay - 4/5 Misty Roses - 5/5 The Face I Love - 5/5 Parade - 3/5 Oba Oba - 4/5 Canoeiro - 4/5 I Had the Craziest Dream - 3/5 Beach Samba - 4/5 My Foolish Heart - 5/5 Dia das rosas - 4/5 You Didn't Have to Be So Nice - 2/5 Não bate o coração - 3/5 Average score: 3.8/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ i like Astrud Gilberto, but i don't think i love this album enough to rate it much higher than i did. personally, i think she released much better work in the earlier portion of her discography
I really like a bit of samba and this was a really good version of it. 4 stars
Genuinely a great piece of work, very calming and reminiscent on simple times.
Another new one for me. Man, this is smooooooth. I'll likely listen to this again. It seems like it'll make for enjoyable napping music.
Clasicazo. Santi Araújo.
It's lovely and relaxing. Not something I'll seek out very often, but it's very nice.
this is like stereolab if they were spanish and chill instead of french and pretentious (jk i love stereolab so much). don't get the hate for this, super chill and fun record. idk I just like samba and bossa nova music a lot. really enjoyed this. wish it was longer though, which is weird cause i always complain about albums being too long
Classy easy listening samba.
I know Astrud Gilberto quite well from Água de Beber and have spun one or two of her albums in the past, but this was a first for Beach Samba. It was very pleasant. The final track, It's A Lovely Day Today, was my pick of the bunch, I much prefer this tune in bossa nova style as opposed to Ella Fitzgerald's jazzy version.
Short, sweet, and get right to the point. It sounds like outakes from I Dream of Jeanie, which was a show I enjoyed watching. Therefore, 4 stars for you. This is actually a really fun album though. Maybe it didn't need to be on this list, but I am very glad it was.
Gut, einmal etwas anderes :-)
I remember back in my late teens and early 20s, I had a few Verve Records compilations on vinyl that I used to play at weddings for friends, and right from the first track, this album triggered those familiar sounds. I vaguely remembered some of these songs, so listening to this album was definitely a trip down memory lane. super chill, nice and fun and good vibes. Didn't love the last song with the kid but overall very good
the first wife of Joao Gilberto (of Getz/Gilberto fame) and the vocalist on "The Girl from Ipanema", Astrud's pop-leaning samba album is easily digestible and satisfyingly smooth as the varied instrumentation perfectly compliments Astrud's smooth and soothing vocals.
She’s got a lovely voice and yes we need more women on the list. But does this add anything that the other album didn’t? 4 stars but reluctantly.
Beautiful
Yes! Could listen to this all day!
Beachy and mysterious. Her voice reminds me of a spring breeze. Generally am a fan of bossa nova. Songs at the end of the album are a bit weak.
This album is a very pleasant surprise. Haven't indulged in much samba music historically, but Astrud's singing makes it very accessible. Even a song like Parade (A Banda) starts out almost grating, but when she comes in and sings about all the different parades I can't help but enjoy it
When I finished listening to this joyful album this morning, I began my day chill and if I were younger I probably would have discreetly skipped along for a step or two. I can feel the skeptics narrowing their gaze on this one, and I am prepared to ignore them. While some critics have derided the pop accessibility of this album, I enjoyed not only the accessibility but the wild varieties of pop arrangements they managed in infuse Samba and Bossa Nova into. How about a marching band? Sure! Why not?
Vamos (a la playa) (samba)
A super relaxing and well-crafted bossa nova/samba album. it felt good to explore this genre a bit more because i've heard a lot about but never actually sat down and listened to it. gilberto's vocals were a key standout - it's so effortless and sounds so soothing over the instrumentation. the instrumentation itself is very creative and has lots of depth with a wide variety of instruments. after having no idea what to expect before listening, i was pleased overall with this album.
pretty awesome 60's samba album, i knew from when i first clicked play i was in for a treat, cool bossa for a bus ride home yeaaaa
Such a beautiful album, paints such a sweet picture, like being on the beach with a partner, enjoying a pretty sunset (apart from that Circus song). Nice ambient music, that really makes you appreciate life for what it is. Beautiful voice that highlights the brilliance of samba jazz!
Very relaxing. Love the voice; so lush and smooth. Enjoyed the rhythms and definitely helped me to slow down and listen.
If this list has taught me anything.. it’s that I really like Samba music
I feel like I should be sipping a cocktail in a mod apartment with James Bond while listening to this.
Loved!
what can i say? i love a beachy vibe. this list has taught me that i like a lot more samba than i realized!
another great samba album by another member of the great gilberto family. the lyrics are fun, the songs sound good, and the vibes are on point. i'm not sure if the album on spotify is accurate since it appears to have five additional songs from another album at the end, but they're great too. shoutout to the drum bit in parade (a banda) that sounds like the intro to the 20th century fox jingle. favorites: misty roses, the face i love, beach samba, nao bate o corocao, tristeza, call me, it's a lovely day today (cool that that song was on the ella fitzgerald album on this list too)
so summery and cute!! very wholesome, and yes, makes me appreciate parades a little more cuz we do have a lot of them. makes me want to have an aperol spritz overlooking the ocean on a breezy day. i don't care for children singing but since it's her son on You didn't have to be so nice I can allow it <3
great find. Samba Jazz with good singing. Favorite track: beach samba other picks: stay, misty roses, oba oba, my foolish heart
4+, good vibes
This is pleasant. I can already tell the challenge will be to rise above just anodyne background. In general it was really nice. A little background-y but felt very nice summer day. Four stars.
I feel like I better understand the musical legacy that Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward are part of with their She & Him project. That makes me appreciate them slightly better knowing that they didn't just create their sound themselves - they basically stole it from Astrud Gilberto. And much like many an imitator, the original does it much better.
Short, sweet, good vibes. I'm in a beach in Miami in the 50s. I'm at the Copacabana. Granted, I've never been to either, but this is what it evokes. 4*
This album sounds like a classy night out in the 30s.
i really liked this, good for background music while reading or lesuire. not what i typically listen to. would be great for a drive along the coast.
Nice and dreamy, but Parade was silly and I didn't really like the child singing.
I wasn’t expecting to like this. There was a familiarity regarding it. I hadn’t listened to her prior. There was a calmness to it
Fun summery vibe!
I’m listening to this while walking the streets of San Diego. Strangely matches the vibe here.
Off to a great, but too long I think
I feel like I am driving down some narrow road in a European city by a river falling in love with some quirky and cute well dressed girl that I had only met a few days earlier ...
First off, I want to praise the instrumentals. I loved them on every song. Jazzy, orchestral and beautifully arranged. If this was a full instrumental album I would give it a 5. However, Astrud's singing is many times good, but after listening to it for 30 minutes. It becomes a bit monotonous. There are some songs here that I would definitely prefer without singing.
Faackong hard
Really interesting music. Great instrumentation.
Summer
Elegantly smooth vocals over bouncy samba instrumentals capture the emotion and yearning in her songs. Could have done without the parade song 3.5
I enjoyed this.
Nice chill vibes. I really liked her tone
Hu dama fra Ipanema jo! Chill ass album utenom den ene jævla korpsfaenskapet. Faen!!! Kort album
first listen heavenly
1001 conclusion: I like samba. Who knew?
Astrud Gilberto is for me a difficult person. On the one side you have songs like "The Girl from Ipanema" with her lovely singing. On the other side you have her singing, where I have the feeling that she is singing off-key (on this album e.g. in "You Didn't Have To Be So Nice"). And furthermore in spite of her somehow nice voice it often sounds thin and you constantly have the feeling that she will miss the next tone. Nevertheless I tend to like her singing and this album is no difference to that.
again very good study music, and i fw latin music in general
So very chill and so very 1960s. I don't know her name, but I have heard her voice before. It sounds like the soundtrack of a '60s psychadelic movie. I like the mood, I like her voice, the Lovin' Spoonful cover with her kid was sweet. I dig this.
Amazing fell In love with this album.
Me refreshing the site to see today's album: "....sigh...." Me after one measure of the album: 🕺🍸🎶🪇 I didn't live through the 60s but I kinda feel like I just spent an hour there. So I guess I like Samba now. 8/10 4 stars
Samba! Not too many samba albums yet, and I enjoyed it. Certain songs are worth coming back for.
I could picture listening to this anywhere. Soft, seemingly effortless.
Stay, Parade (A Banda)
Well that was nice. I don't have a ton to say about this album. I wouldn't say it's better than her ex-husband's work with Stan Getz on the legendary Getz/Gilberto, but Astrud Gilberto's 1967 album Beach Samba serves as a very pleasant and consistent collection of music. This is a very short album, so I'll try to have a shorter review. The style is enjoyable for me to listen to. It's soothing, as is Astrud Gilberto's singing. The writing is simple, but effective. There's really nothing here I dislike. I don't feel too strongly about the album, but I do feel positively about it, which is all that matters. 4/5.
So fkn smooth
Lightweight, cool, chilled vibes perfectly pleasant for summer vacations
I'm on a tropical beach in the 80's, closed an insane business deal, and letting the waves crash over me. Thats what I get here, and damn those flutes hit so good here.l, great soft percussion.
Love me some calypso/bossa nova. Not sure what sets this album apart from any other in the genre but it was still a very enjoyable listen
I think it’s a fair criticism of these bossa nova albums to say they’re a bit one dimensional and essentially “background music,” but I’m a sucker for them anyway. It made for a pleasant 40 minutes. Favorite: Stay
I’m typically not into relaxing music, but this stuff just hits me right.
Beautiful, relaxing and easy listening music!
I guess the title should have clued me in that this would be a samba or bossa nova, but I wasn’t paying attention. This sounds like the 60s. It’s very relaxing and pleasant. I’m really digging the parade song. I miss good marching band arrangements. I miss arrangements like this. I love flutes and horns. I love electric music and crazy sounds and synths, but I do miss these kinds of albums.
Hmmmm weet niet of ik dit album van haar er op zou zetten, desondanks leuk. Zij raakt volgens mij een gevoelige snaar bij sommigen die boos worden, maar daar weet ik (voor nu nog) te weinig over
Very good
Day430 - i can’t wait to pull this one out on the beach this summer
Pleasant, perfect for the shift to spring that’s happening right now. That being said it kinda feels like a kids album at some points. Inconsistent but nice
I knew what the music was going to sound like before listening to it. It’s a short sweet and relaxing album with the only issue being its a bit repetitive. 7/10
Stunning arrangements that sit underneath a voice that leaves you feeling nostalgic for summer love in decades past.
Gilberto's Beach Samba evokes tropical warmth on even the coldest days, marrying bossa nova rhythms and pop sensibilities with her sunshine-bright vocals that transport listeners straight to the shores of Ipanema.
Smooth vibe.
⭐⭐⭐⭐– 4[.2] of 5 stars. I really loved listening to this album. Felt like a calm summer day, with those small little jazzy instrumentals and those classic bossa nova & samba drum grooves. As a whole, a really solid album, and a relaxing and calming album all the way through (Except "A Banda (Parade)" - ts literally made me jump when it came on lol). Favourites: Misty Roses⭐, Beach Samba (Bossa na praia), The Face I love, Canoeiro.
Fantastyczna rzecz.
It was a cool evening in the spring of 1971. Unseasonably cool. The breeze was blowing off the bay and moving the boats docked off the Bahia Marina. The town never looked better under the incandescent glow of modernity. I walked into the bar with its familiar chipping paint and open doors and windows. Rafael was waiting for me but I brushed him off with the usual excuses for my lack of cashflow. I’d almost calmed him down enough to order a drink when I saw her. And I’ll never forget the music that was playing that night. 4/5. Lets samba.
Soft
So fun I really liked it. The parade song is so cute and fun. Love
Smooth Bossa Nova. Like a 60's Norah Jones. Easy to listen to and mellow out. 3.5/5
I would describe this album as beach samba. Stand-out: The Face I Love
She has a lovely voice, slightly wavering and sometimes even a little off key but beautiful nonetheless. (The auto tuned abomination of today could learn a lot here). Nice gentle songs. I've never heard this version of Parade before but have definitely heard the tune somewhere can't think where. Don't know why this is on the 1001 list but I really liked it.
Fun breezy album for a 0 degree today
Even though I was freezing my ass off listening to this, I felt warm inside. Not as great as other Bossa Nova on this list, but still good enough.
A bit conflicted on how to judge this one. The album is comprised of a lot of really short songs, with the original release containing 12 songs despite clocking in at just short of 28 minutes. While I am not typically one who is bothered by silly or otherwise nonsensical lyrics there were some songs where I was almost left scratching my head at how goofy the lyrics were (the parade song being the worst offender). All that being said though, I still listened to the entire extended piece on both listens due to how easy and relaxing it was. Astrud continues to have a great singing voice and the impressive swathe of performers involved in this all do a terrific job. So while I do question some aspects of the album, I also have to appreciate how well it accomplishes its easy listening aspects.
So damn smooth man. Always a pleasure to get an album like this.
Good album, it's a shame it has none of her best songs on it that I immediately ran to after listening, Meditation and Aruanda the self titled album being better than this in every way. Still nice to return to the voice of Samba though 7/10 Fav tracks - The Face I Love, Parade (A Banda); Oba, Oba; Beach Samba, My Foolish Heart, Here's that Rainy Day, It's a Lovely Day Today
60s samba was always going to please me but the one with the kid was annoying
Enjoyed.
I do love that this challenge is introducing me to music I've never heard before! This was nice. Light. Melodic. Simple. It gives more to its listener than it asks of him. No, it didn't change my world, nor will it make its way into my playlist, but I'm happy to have spent a short and pleasant time with it on this journey called life. Perhaps we'll meet again someday :)
Perfect for the Sunday afternoon I got this on. smooth, calm, and just enough shuffle to be interesting.
Very nice easy listening. Not sure it's a 'must listen to' album - but I'm glad I did.
Man what a fun bossa nova album. Just the perfect vibe for driving in a convertible to a beach drink in hand (it’s the 60s it’s fine). What an excellent vibe.
Bossa nova. Canta muy bien. Un 4.
So peaceful and smooth
This was great music to work with and I've never heard of it before. Rating a 4 out of uniqueness and because I listened to it three straight times before moving on!
Very pretty.
A hip twitching bum wriggler of the gentle variety.
you can take the girl out of ipanema but --
Love me some samba and her voice is iconic
3.5/5
Pre-listening: interesting choice. Curious why she made the list. WAITTT THIS IS THE WOMAN WHO SINGS THE GIRL FROM IMPANEMA OHHHH but that song isn’t on this album :( Post/during listening thoughts: man after nirvana anything sounds a little better. It’s sort of like elevator music though. She has a lovely voice and the beats are nice but it’s very easy for it to become background music. Also 27 mins is super short. It’s just very easy listening 60s music which I honestly don’t really have real complaints about. 7/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: no but it was pleasant Fav tracks: stay, misty roses, the face I love, oba oba, my foolish heart Least fav tracks: parade (what is happening why are we listing every holiday), you didn’t have to be so nice (if you’re gonna bring a kid in to sing make sure they’re not pitchy)
Different, belongs on this list! A good singer, good variety across the album. I feel like the singer was solid but did not show impressive range. I expect that she has the talent to do so, but this felt understated. Nice to hear lyrics in a different language, that feels rare on this list. A 3.5, not too exciting for me but grateful it's on the list.
Loved it! Could have done without the duet with her kid, but the parade song grew on me.
Probably my favorite album from an artist and genre i never would have discovered or listened to on my own. I liked the whole thing. Her voice is remarkable. One star deducted for the song with the child.
Lovely notes floating along to us from another time and place.
Pleasant listen, she has a great voice and the recordings have that nostalgic quality, but there's nothing memorable here. Rounded up from a high 3.
Enjoyable!
Astrud has such a calm, serene voice and it gives way to calm, serene sounds attached to soothing instrumentals.
This was an incredibly soothing samba album that delivered on multiple fronts. Aside from the signature samba sounds, there are hints of jazz, American marching band, and even a little folk in there. Gilberto's beautiful voice and the top-notch instrumentals made this a delightful listen in under 30 minutes. Notable Tracks: - Stay - Misty Roses - Parade (A Banda) - an ode to marching in parades which is amazing - Oba, Oba - Canoeiro - You Didn’t Have To Be So Nice - Nao Bate O Corocao 8/10
Pleasant femme pop, though some of the covers are a little cheesy. Overall something I'd play for a backyard BBQ.
Favourite song - Canoeiro
Her voice is so soothing
Great mellow vibes that you can sway to; I wouldn't say I get a beach vibe but has that underlying samba beat
Very pleasant and fun. Like a warm breeze.
Nothing I would typically listen to, but she has a lovely, clear voice and a sultry, positive vibe that is super pleasant to listen to. Glad I took the beach samba journey.
I love this style of music. Some of the tracks were a real vibe. Some show how music has changed. Parade was an example of a song that has not stood the test of time. Regardless, I would listen to this again, or add some tracks to other playlists. Good stuff.
What happened?
i really liked it at first but despite being so short it gets repetitive very fast. still it's all pleasant and i think it is intended to be somewhat easy listening so i can't really fault it too much for that.
I fell in love with Astrud Gilberto's somber yet cozy singing whilst listening to Getz/Gilberto, she was easily the standout performer there, as I wasn't expecting the non-credited singer to be the best part of my introduction to proper bossa nova. It only makes sense, then, that she got a solo career to rival her ex-husband and many other vocal performers from the time. When this album is trying to capture that same spirit as Getz/Gilberto, sans the titular leads, it still works really well, as Astrud's voice is just meant for that easy-listening, elevator music style, and I mean that in a good way. It's so lounge-y, as if I'm stepping into a picturesque version of the 60s, and even the more "high-energy" stuff that appears throughout still works pretty well, such as the final track which reminds me of something that'd be found on an album by Stereolab or Komeda. However, there are a lot of moments here that try too hard to do something different, and really ruin the mood. Parade is straight up not good, and while some of the other songs that are just as repetitive are better, they still are too short to do anything interesting, and when you get tracks like that back-to-back-to-back, it can be kind of draining. It really does shape up in the back half, I feel, and I even think the song with her son is cute, albeit not a song I'd listen to in my free time. Is the album anything spectacular? Absolutely not, it isn't an album I'd consider even a good showcase of its genres, but Astrud Gilberto's voice is oh so sweet and the whole album is so light and breezy that it is difficult to look at the album with too critical of an eye. It's just an enjoyable time, and one that gave me my fix of bossa nova, although all I realize now is I need to listen to her earlier solo albums, as I can only assume those are more what most are looking for out of Gilberto.
Enjoyed this, she has a beautiful voice. Kind of like The Sims music, but with vocals.
I’m at a 3.5 that I'll bump up to a 4. I don’t really have too much to add; that’s a super competent bossa nova album. I don’t think there was a bad track here – even the Parade song, for as dumb and goofy and cheesy as it was, sort of won me over with how brazenly out of place it is. It definitely didn’t need to be on the album, but it’s not like it’s a bad listen. This album never does anything to get up into the territory of a 5 – there’s no rousing soundscapes, no signature songs, and nothing that especially sticks out, save for (at least to me) My Foolish Heart, which just kinda won me over. However, I think this maintains a pretty solid standard of quality throughout, and the vibes just connected perfectly with me. It’s a driving album, it’s a study album, and it’s a “do chores” album, but I enjoyed it all the same. Solid, solid 4.
A pretty chill listen. 3.5 stars
I really enjoyed this
W sumie to fajne i luźne. 4/5
Lovely
Elska þetta brasilíska bossanova og samba. Mjög góð plata að hlusta á við matarundirbúning.
Que bossa, espontaneamente 27 minutos agradáveis.
Great experience. Playing with the soundstage cinched it for me. If I wanted to listen to Samba, I'd choose this.
Bossa nova, easy listening. Not a whole lot to this album really. Short songs that showcase bossa novas relaxing powers. It's not a mind-blowing album at all, not gonna change you perspective on music or anything crazy. Just a collection of great songs, performed passionately by everyone involved. A simple experience but a very welcome one. Probably won't revisit but I did enjoy it. Strong 3.5/5
Sweet
Glorious sunny jazzy vibes through and through. Lovely record.
What an eerie yet comforting voice. Astrud Gilberto is one of a kind. It's weird how each song is charming, and you can't get enough out of her style.
I’ve noticed a trend. For as much respect as João Gilberto gets, and rightfully so, those around him don’t see the same treatment. I really enjoyed his daughter’s album, and thought it pushed bossa nova in a cool direction. Case in point with his wife. They may have only been married briefly, but that doesn’t change the impact she had on bossa nova herself. This may not be as modern sounding and creative as Bebel’s record, but it does succeed at one thing. And that’s being a bossa nova album. And a totally harmless one at that. It does everything it needs to do, and no more than that. It might just be me, but it’s not like Astrud has much to prove. This is the same lady that sang on The Girl from Ipanema. She is equally as much a Brazilian legend as her husband was. And this album is very much worth your time. I believe everyone should do themselves a favor and form a deeply personal relationship with bossa nova music at some point in their life. There is zero downside. You’ve got nothing to lose, and everything to gain. This album isn’t a terrible place to start either. Very short with very brief songs that summarize the basic foundations of the genre. It isn’t going to blow your socks off with anything experimental or sophisticated, or change your life, but I think it sits in a very nice group of simple and worthwhile albums. Rating: 7/10
I really liked the drum patterns in some of these songs
some great vibes for last saturday morning of sophomore year
Something different but enjoyable
Never heard of her before tbh. But this is a great album. Loving the vibe and have now listened to some of her other work and it won't be for the last time.
I often complain albums are boring. This one is extremely mellow yet remains enjoyable. Play this when it's sunny with a cold cocktail in hand.
What a chill vibe! I loved having this album on in the background of a slow weekend afternoon at home.
Good stuff!
Very calming and pleasant. Instrumentals and vocals were both very good. Each song was a good length, not too long (space truckin take notes). Favourites: stay, misty roses, the face I love, parade (a banda), you didn't have to be so nice. The vibes were immaculate 4/5.
idk why the wii play tanks theme was on this album but ignoring that one (Parade (A Banda)) it was a good album. most of the songs were a vibe, Astrud Gilberto's voice fits her jazzy instrumentals perfectly. this album could have been a 5 i think if the album had been a little more cohesive, as i love myself a bossa nova album (laufey :^) but yeah anyway 4/5 but very high 4. favourites: Misty Roses, The Face I Love, I Had The Craziest Dream, Beach Samba, Nao Bate O Corocao
This is the most beach samba an album can get, really lives up to its name. Whole thing has this nice laid-back vibe, also loved the background strings featured on some of the tracks and the fact that all songs were relatively short. Favourites were Misty Roses, The Face I Love, Oba, Oba, I Had The Craziest Dream, I Think Of You, Nao Bate O Corocao, and It's A Lovely Day Today. Cool 4, we're so back
I enjoyed this album, definitely creates a relaxed and happy atmosphere. Great for a background sound, like most bossa nova. A Banda and You Didn't Have to Be So Nice (which strangely reminds me of the musical Oliver!) throw you out of that chill zone. They're out of step with the album as a whole. That said, I think You Didn't Have to Be So Nice is actually adorable and, honestly, seems like excellent parenting. Reading the full Wiki entry on Astrud Gilberto, I didn't realize Stan Getz was such a boorish tool who actively cut her out of deserved royalties from The Girl from Ipanema and took advantage of her in other ways. What a jerk.
Some people would probably write this off as generic touristy beach music, but I think it's so reminiscent of that because of its cool evocative power - really enjoyed this.
Bossa Nova Bliss.
Such a cutesy lovely vibe. Every song is so cosy. Faves Parade (A Banda) and You Didn't Have To Be So Nice
So cutesy! Capital K Kawaii! I for sure have days when this would have hit me like nails on a blackboard, but fortunately I was in a receptive mood for both play throughs and enjoyed it! Fave track - "A Banda (Parade)" - it's such a weird inclusion! 😆 Jolts you out of the mellow trance the first three tracks were sinking you in to, and then when you pay attention to the lyrics it's mocking US pomposity - great stuff!
Enjoyed it. Need to add to some of these songs to my summer mix. 4/5
Real nice
I like the music, but it would have been a lot better if the singer had any emotion whatsoever in her voice. Favorite song: Nao Bate O Corocao.
