Reviews (page 9 of 9)

The “Pump Up the Volume” movie soundtrack introduced me to Sonic Youth - great soundtrack! and pretty good film too - “Titanium Expose” was the cut from Goo that made the cut. Overalll, pretty good Goo. I like the hit, “Kool Thing”, and I really like the first half of “Mote”, but the second delves into experimental art/noise/rock that turned me off. A solid 3.5, but I’m rounding down; the good sections just can’t pull the messy parts up to a 4.

Their most commercial album, and also still inaccessible at times. Lots of feedback. Need more time with it.

Great, right up my alley.

Por su fama lo he intentado muchas veces con el y nunca he visto su grandeza

Decent grunge with some really strong tracks and some easy skips. 7/10

Not a fan. 4

Goo has *everything*. A punk ode to Karen Carpenter, a fuck-you/come-on feminist anthem, a robot absolutely screlting the name Mildred Pierce, but most importantly it’s got Goo herself. Slay yas goo mama boots

I'm not a big fan of Sonic Youth but I think this album is very good, great guitars. Kool Thing especially

6/10. Sounded good in it's own way, but not really something I would listen to on purpose

....meh?

4.1 - Here's that legendary Sonic Youth sound I feel like I've been missing. "Daydream Nation" and "Dirty" seem to find the band with some of its edges polished down. Here Sonic Youth is fully immersed in its fascination with feedback, strange guitar tunings, unusual chords progressions and riffs. Some cringe moments like the political musings on "Kool Thing" and when she keeps singing "PU!" on "My Friend Goo." To me, these add to the overall charm of an energetic record that sounds like a reference piece.

"Kool Thing" is obviously a killer track that really steps up when the rest of this album does not. Their album "Daydream Nation" seemed a lot more earnest of an effort to me. Like it was just naturally an interesting and cool take on indie guitar rock, while this one felt like Sonic Youth knew they were seen as a "cool" band and really tried to sound like it. I mean why name your album after a goofy ass, childish track like "Goo," if you didn't want everyone to think "Oh whoa they just really don't give a fuck, sick. Yeah the song sucks but they're sticking it to pop music." Idk, I just have a hangup with Sonic Youth's pretension because I don't think they are making the artistic statements to back it up.

its aight

Now this is some some Sonic Youth I can get behind. Grit and realness with less of an overtly politicized sound.

The last was nice

sounds like more lax but still angsty early fob. mv for dirty boots is hype lol. 2nd song in - i don't not like it, but it's not the type of music i would listen to now just to get to know it.

Powerful and great sound, full of energy. Anyway, my heartbeats stay exactly the same while I’m listening to them.

Sauvage!

I actually liked a lot of the sounds on this album, but I think it could have been edited down by at least 10 minutes. Production quality was surprising with the guitars but inconsistent with vocals, and I generally think the vocals were more grating than they needed to be. 7

Great sound and this is what rock should feel like. Took off a star cause I don’t love the singing.

I've listened to daydream nation quite a few times but never listened to this album. It whips ass

Previously I’ve listened to a few SY albums but not this one, so I was excited to have this as my first choice. I had heard Kool Thing before and maybe Dirty Boots which are great songs. Overall I really enjoyed this album. Sick guitars and effects!

Starts good but after the feel of the album becomes boring and even plain.

That’s a lotta noise boys...- Vinnie Ester

I’ve enjoyed this a lot

A strong SY album, but less noisy and more alt-rock than other albums. 7/10, I preferred 'Dirty' as well as the earlier no-wave works.

I didn't discover Sonic Youth until 1992, when Dirty was released. I quickly devoured their entire catalog, but Daydream Nation was the album I connected with the most. It's nice to have a reason to come back to this one. It still holds up. All of their music holds up. It could be released today and be totally relevant.

I find Sonic Youth a bit impenetrable. I love a lot of the riffs and the energy, but it's almost like free jazz in the construction. Definitely something I'll listen to again at some point.

Now I need to watch Scott Pilgrim vs the World. rock out of 5

Better than expected and better than the last sonic youth album. Some of the spoken word over music was good, some meh. But I liked the sound and vibe all around!

It was alright. Not really my thing but I could appreciate it all the same. The lyrics felt really apathetic which I think is part of that whole grunge thing, but eh just makes it feel boring imo.

I surprisingly really liked this album.

I enjoyed this, good noisy stuff. A few tracks definitely were fun.

Not my style at all.

Really good. Probably my fourth favorite Sonic Youth album behind EVOL, Sister and Daydream Nation. "Dirty Boots" is a classic. 8/10

“Sonic youth, High School. Now I'm Old, damn noisy kids Goo did not age well.”

So bad! There is music, good and bad... this was noise, really bad noise. .2 stars

3 stars for music, extra star for doing really cool shit with their guitars

Sonic youth has been a sometimes guilty pleasure of mine. I’ve mostly listened to things past 1995 Washing Machine era. This was a fun pull back a few years. I really do love the groundwork SY did to bring some more alternative vibes onto the radio and into the mainstream.

Weird, Experimental, Noise Music. Grunge before grunge.

It's for sure "different." And had some songs I knew. But I don't love it.

I did not enjoy this. It was a barage of unending dreary angst. Sure maybe that's the point, but it's not for me.

A bit too grungy for my taste

instrumentation and female lead vocalist

Easily my favorite SY album. Maybe not their best, but still classic.

Very repetitive, but some of the songs have a decent melody. I don't mind the genre, but they have some terrible songs too, and I just got tired of listening halfway through, then after "Mildred Pierce" I had to shut it off. Highlights: -Mote

Incredible. Way way ahead of its time.

nice n easy n fun but also n boring

very cool i enjoyed 4.5

Kool Thing rules

A bit of a mixed bag, although I like it on whole. Has its highlights: Each of the vocalists has a great song, including "Dirty Boots, "Kool Thing" and "Mote", but some songs like "Mary-Christ" and "Cinderella's Big Score" are just a waste of time. The musicianship is stellar, some amazing drumming and the weaving wall of guitar noise is hypnotizing at times.

Find I'm very tired of the vocal delivery of this era and strata of alternative pop. A bare three points for the instrumentation which I liked better, but didn't really care for this.

This is the epitome of art for art's sake. It's so far up it's own ass it has become some kind of bagel. Not catchy, interesting, captivating or moving. It's the type of pretentious garbage I absolutely hate. It charted so poorly because it's bad music. It's a cult band, with an Andy Worhol type of self importance so vulgar I barely call it music. But hey, it's cool to be like "the themes explored really speak to the general malaise of the time...." get fucked. 0/10

Some interesting sounds I had never listened before

I think this is their first great album. I prefer 90s/2000s Sonic Youth to 80s Sonic Youth.

Unfortunately the more I listen to Sonic Youth the less I am impressed. I like everything they do on paper, but I just can't get behind the execution in general. I knew of Tunic, but it goes on twice as long as it should, otherwise I'd like it.

Pretty heavy. It’s interesting. I’m no music critic

Very good album for a one time listen. While I liked it, I don't foresee myself coming back to it. The album tells a coherent story, it's alternative rock which I like but it didn't grab me like it could have.

Cool guitar timbre. Can't sing along, but still catchy. A bit like Metric x La Femme, with more disorder and noise.

Noisy at some of its finest, great album

Not my thing

I love the start of this album you get a mix of noise, psychedelic, pop mix especially with the female voices starting in the track ‘Tunic’. The album felt very fresh even over 20 years after release, it seems like it was very experimental for the time (not sure if other Sonic Youth albums are similar). Even the heavy noise tracks like ‘Mildred Pierce’ and ending with ‘Titanium Expose’ were fantastic for keeping the dark & psychedelic mood of the album. The only track that felt massively out of place was ‘Cinderella’s Big Break’ as it was more upbeat than the track before and after, it felt like a massive jump in the movement of the album.

Liked this better than Daydream Nation. I can't believe I've missed this my whole life. Cinderella's Big Score was a favorite track.

I like this. Noisy but not heavy or obnoxious. Just cool alt rock. The vocals switching from song to song was nice too.

This was a really fun listen. I have this album, but it's been awhile. The trading off of lead vocals was really fun. Knowing the story behind Kool Thing added depth to the song.

Reminds me a little of sleigh bells or white stripes. An old school kind of sound that could easily pass for music of today. Most songs are too long, and I can't hear 90% of what they're saying. The guitars and shit are cool, but this isn't music that speaks to me. Song titles make no sense, and as far as I can tell the songs are about nothing at all. Favorite song is scooter and jinx

Music to drink a gallon of hot, black coffee and smoke 2 packs. Quintessential Gen X

Good album.

I thoroughly enjoy this album by Sonic Youth. I would say it is rather Goo-d!

Noisy...some good guitar playing, but mostly just loud.

not a fan, experimental is fine but this has a lot of clashing noises that i don't enjoy.

This was good. I didn’t mind the spoken word stuff too much. Weird alt rock that was interesting if nothing else.

I never got it, still don't really. Musically fine, but neither singer appeals at all.

Influential indie classic, Kool Thing alone makes this an instant classic

I’ve never been a huge sonic youth fan. The guitars and drums are all pretty awesome, but the vocals and lack of hooks really make this kind of a wash for me. So many talked vocals and they feel like they kind of ruin things for me. Big noise rock and no wave feel. Once again, great guitars. But idk how often I'll come back to it

Ihan ok. Ei ehkä parasta musaa työpäivään.

Surprisingly good.

Occasional good bits, too much screaming though

Enjoyed it although it’s not my usual genre. Had to listen in short bursts.

Very early 90s

Hey, this doesn't suck. It's like Sonic Youth finally discovered the magic elements of "song structure" and "composition" and used those to make an album that wasn't unlistenable bullshit noise. Still not, like, good or anything. But it's not awful and that seems to be the bar for the Sonic Youth albums on this list.

This was Sonic Youth's jump to a major label, and the contemporary reviews I read praised the album for its authenticity, which I take to mean that they didn't sell out by getting rid of the bullshit. I can confirm that there is still plenty of bullshit to wade through. Best track: Kool Thing

Interesting album, really in your face

Certainly accessible, with the experimental bits spread unevenly across the runtime. The first few tracks are certainly the strongest, though the fact that Chuck D is so easy to miss is disappointing. It would be a stronger record if it was more firmly in the pop-structure or noisy-sound camp. Or more Kim: Her appearances were the strongest songs and sections of songs.

1990. Key Songs: Dirty Boots, Kool Thing, Titanium Expose

Perhaps offensive to the true Sonic Youth fans (who I count myself among) but an excellent record. It's got that poppy grungey quality to it but Sonic Youth know they're the cooler older brother and the play the part of it. Probably one of the most baffling albums to bubble outside of the mainstream with their signature dissonant guitar tones and progressive meandering structures. Kim and Thurston on vocals kind of mix together cartoony irreverence with overt politics and dialogue with pop culture imagery for an overall pretty socially progressive but lighthearted time. I think it's a very natural counterpart to the guitar bible that is Daydream Nation.

4/15 4.5/5. Another tough album from the Sonic Youth. Standout Tracks: Tunic (Song For Karen), Kool Thing, Mote, My Friend Goo, Disappearer, Cinderella's Big Score, Titanium Expose

Rock crado

Great album

The album itself isnt that good. Side A is great with Dirty Boots and Kool Thing, but Side B has quite a few duds. Its just not as good as Daydream Nation, Sister or Dirty. Few albums are, though. What, however, is great here, is the album cover. Artwork by Raymond Pettibon. The original image is a paparazzi photograph taken from a 1966 murder trial. In the photo is Maureen Hindley and David Smith who were both key witness in the Moors Murders trial. Maureens sister Myra murdered 5 children and asked David to help bury them. David instead reported his sister-in-law, who got charged with life sentence and the press called her 'the most evil woman in Britain'.
