Reviews (page 7 of 8)

It's okay, a bit noisy. Didn't really grab me but it may if I listen to it again.

Album got weaker as it went on. Dirty Boots was a strong start though. My friend Goo would have broke my ears if it was 30 seconds longer.

just aint my style a few songs were just shouting voices and I'm not capable or rating an album higher than a 3 if some songs are just not it

the fact that time has shown them to be phonies, sellouts, and bullies wouldn't really matter if it was a good record, but even when i was 13 and idolized these guys, i knew this one was a stinker. cool cover art though.

Whether by design or a matter of engineering, instruments overwhelm vocals. IMO the instrumental technique is not all that sophisticated. The 90's angst...

2/5. This is an odd album that I think will clash with the average listener, but there's some gold here. It ping pongs from amazing to tiresome to obnoxious moments. It's really crazy how varied the sounds are. Some songs are pure noise with little artistry or thought behind them, and others show a real mastery over their instruments/production. Some vocals are absolute dynamite, and others are ugly and cringe inducing. Lyricism ranges from "why did you write this" to brilliant. It's just all over the place. It's a more artsy album than most will listen to, but I think it's worth a try. Ideally when you can sit down and truly focus on it — the amazing moments really are amazing, and you can overlook the painful and cringey stuff, albeit with effort.

The influence of Sonic Youth can be felt throughout the alt rock resurgence of the late 80’s and early 90’s. And this album only adds to that. The high water marker in Kool Thing.

I really was not in the right mood for this album all day. I can see some moments of appeal, but I hated the experience of listening to this album. I was feeling off kilter and messy all day, and this only made it worse! I may go back to listen another time. But man… it really made me worse.

Mycket instrumentalt, och buller och så vidare. Föll inte mig i smaken riktigt, hade lite svårt att lyssna. 4.5/10

did not enjoy the talking over background music. but i've heard more audibly offensive stuff

I've never consciously listened to Sonic Youth, I probably won't again. The guitars are pleasant enough but aside from that this is as interesting as my grandmother's wallpaper.

Almost good.

Talk about a band that could have been great but decided to instead use their studio time to record them screaming in my ear. There are glimpses of good music, but too much of it is long instrumental sections that overstay their welcome, talk singing, or outright shouting. 2/5

Better than I remembered. Back in the day, I only pretended to like this in order to seem cooler than I was. Being old is wonderfully liberating.

Standouts Kool Thing

Not bad music. Found the record to be a little boring. I'll have to give it a 2nd listen cause I feel asleep...

I can’t put my finger on whether I like them or not… I think it’s the vocals that makes it strange for me. 2.5 star

Decent enough background music while working. A little too sloppy and "artistic" for my taste to listen to in regular rotation. As so many of these albums they tend to all sound the same after awhile. Ehhh.

Not my thing

Much more bad than good…

The American equivalent of all that British wave/post-punk on this list: Overrepresented, and the relevance is often hard to fathom if you weren't there at the time. Another famous name I'd never really listened to before that I now have and have to file under "meh".

A little too hard again for my taste. So far whoever picked these must listen to albums definitely has a type of music they like... ;)

The vocals were ass, but I did enjoy the instrumentals. This gave vibes from a early 2000's skating or street racing video game.

Several guitars out of tune? Vocals out of tune? Other discordant instruments all played on top of each other? Clearly seminal music and among the greatest of all time. Please give me more 1:06 songs of random guitar noises so I can praise the artistic vision of this band's discography, which sounds just as awful as the rest of this album's 50 minutes of "genre defining" low talent garbage. It's really not impressive that this band sought to create "experimental" music by playing all of their instruments out of tune, and they deserve absolutely no credit for exploring a sound space that was already known to be unpleasant. This is why musicians study things like structure, rhythm, and melody - because people generally enjoy music with those elements in balance. People who want the contrary are welcome to this band's music, but the rest of us don't deserve to be subjected to it before our deaths.

I wish I was cool enough...

Noise-Rock, 1990 -> 2

Not my thing, won’t be coming back to it.

More overrated, atonal 90’s punk. A sad example of the progressive wing corrupting our corporate contempt. Don’t hate, won’t listen again.

would probably like it more at different time but couldn’t get into it today

Equally worse and better than expected. They had certain parts that sounded cool but never a full song imo. My anology is this... "The first fish that climbed out of the ocean to try walking on land was nowhere near as majestic as a dolphin or later a horse but was very important to the process. Sonic Youth is that blob fish that's necessary but not as good as what came before or after." I've even seen Sonic Youth and was bored haha.

Not my thing but this wasn’t too bad. 2.5

Goo-de gud

Yeah, one Sonic Youth album is plenty and there’s like 6 on the list. Maybe one song or two songs on here I could get into

Some good workout track, some screeching

The first half of the album was euphoric music, and the second half of the album was pointless noise Rick. Favorite Track: "Tunic(Song For Karen)".

I somehow thought I was going to like this Album but mostly I didn't enjoy it. too bad

Geile Gitarren Georgier Gesang

This is the fourth Sonic Youth album on this list that I have reviewed…can we be done with them now? The last album, Dirty, I actually kind of liked, but this one for the most part is dissonant noise. Two stars.

Decent enough rock.

I thought maybe, just maybe, this album had something going for it after the first couple of songs. Then it nosedived right into being monotonous, tone deaf noise. Mildred Pierce was the track that sent me over the edge. I understand that this is their art, but it is not for me. I will give it a star for a strong start and ok ending.

Predominantly a barrage of noise

Confirming that Sonic Youth and I still do not get along.

Can you tell the "Kool Thing" I'm not interested in bulldozer noise. 2/5

Nochmal hören

5/10 - not really my jam but I get it

Not sure about this really - there are a couple of decent tracks, more average stuff and then some dross. 2/5

Mal was Neues (für mich). Noise Rock. Knarzige Geräusche mit verstimmten Gitarren. Manchmal rockig, manchmal nervig. Auf Dauer aber letzteres.

Not as bad as I was expecting. I typically don’t like Sonic Youth but this one wasn’t terrible. Didn’t really like the long segments of just noise, but the actual music was decent. Standout Songs: Dirty Boots Kool Thing Disappearer

I didn't really get much out of this. Energetic and trashy, but I know many people love that.

This was fine; not really anything to write home about. I don't think I'd listen to it again?

Really weird. Maybe I'm just not in the cool 90s kid target audience. Tracks to Track: Dirty Boots

2 decent songs and the rest crap. i have struggled with sonic youth since i was a kid. just don't get it

Oh, great, another Sonic Youth album. How thrilling. This one has the usual mix of half-baked experimentalism and intermittent flashes of catchy moments, but it’s mostly just business as usual for the band. At least "Dirty Boots" has a decent chord progression to latch onto, and "Disappearer" provides some pleasant indie rock vibes with its melodic guitar lines and a Lou Reed-ish vocal performance. But then there’s that stuff: "Tunic (Song for Karen)" — in which the band imagines Karen Carpenter in heaven, singing from her point of view. Creepy? Yeah, a little. "Kool Thing" might’ve been interesting if the dis track about LL Cool J weren’t so smug and grating. So, here we are again: another record that thinks it’s more profound than it is. Some good moments, sure, but too many indulgences.

Didn’t enjoy

No my favorite album. I feel like it sounded exactly like the last sonic youth album

Okay it is finally time for me to return to Sonic Youth to talk about my infamous hatred of Goo and how I will never understand why people go so crazy for it. Sonic Youth as a band is one that really perplexes me because they are so well renowned and yet so fucking snobby at the same time. Most of the songs here are either just fine or are barely good at that and I will stand on that point firmly. This is a pretty plain and generic Alt Rock album that doesn't offer anything to it of note other than some kick ass vocals from Kim Gordon and occasionally good guitar parts, but everything else feels so lacking for some reason. I don't know how this album managed to grow even further off me in the 3 years since I last heard this in full but that is truly impressive. I don't think I'll ever understand what people see in this album but I will gladly not sugarcoat my opinion just because others seem to rave about this project.

I like it. Very full on workout or driving music

So sick of the 90’s electric guitar

An energetic album, not really my style 2/5

Infinitely better than the other Sonic Youth album we've already had, E.V.O.L., but that really doesn't say much. Pretty unremarkable and had to skip through a couple songs as they were unlistenable.

There are some really long, drawn out instrumental sections that are just guitar screeching or feedback or just slightly unpleasant sounds near the end or middle or bridges of the songs. I really like the opening song Dirty Boots where it was more instrumental, the guy was singing. Don’t get me wrong I’m not sexist, but the female vocalist sucked imo because she just spoke and it was very obvious what the song title was because she would just say the title for the chorus and constantly remind us what the song is called through out with her talk singing.

Meh, there must be something I'm missing about Sonic Youth. Folks (usually around my age) rave about them, bands cite them as influences, but they just leave me cold. Maybe I'm in the wrong: I suck

I'm not sure how to feel about this one. The noisy guitars and general rawness is good... but the vocals just suck. Its either a disinterested woman singing or the whiney vocals of a man. Makes most songs a chore to get through, when it could be so much better. After 1989, I was really hoping for a decent palette cleanser. Interesting enough stuff here, just not well executed or relistenable.

Ugh, people talking in songs, tunic got on my nerves. The guitar stuff made me migraine worse. Mildred Pierce was trash. 2* Highlights: kool thing

Velvet Underground for the 90s. Can't deny the influence and "coolness" of this, but I would personally be bummed if any of this showed up on a playlist. Just not into the experience of listening to it.

Meh. 2/5

Not really my thing but Mote and Disappearer were good.

https://musicboard.app/supermyssk/review/album/goo/sonic-youth/

Forgettable punk / rock

Skrammel, dist å rundgång e coolt! Eller? Kanske 1990, men idag? Felas 2:a var stark. Denna rör sig i andra ändan av skalan.

Noise for noise sake. I liked the guitar parts only a little bit, but the lyrics really turned this down for me. 2/5. I can see the vision but it just doesnt land in any capacity.

Goo is all over the place. Off key singing (intentional or just bad?) on a few numbers. Weak rhymes and noise on a few others. Album would be improved if they cut Mildred Pierce, Scooter And Jinx, and the last four minutes of Mote (which is the best cut on the album.) The Song For Karen Carpenter helps get Goo on the 1001 Must Hear List. And is well timed since we just heard from her. This one comes in at (2.1*s) Goo smells P.U.

Never really gave this band a chance and still probably won't after listening to Goo. Half the album is alright, other half is a bit of a hap-hazard noise fest. I liked the first and last tracks...middle was uninspiring. Not the worst record but skippable. 2.03 stars.

listenable.

I really like some of the songs further in the album, but so many of them left no impact for me.

Did not like it very much

I feel pressured to like Sonic Youth...but I just can't.

Still not into Sonic Youth. Maybe if Kim Gordon sang every song I’d be more into them?

I can respect the history and influence here, but I think I’m officially too old for this kind of energy. The fuzzy, feedback-heavy wall of sound feels less like rebellious noise and more like someone parked a lawnmower in my living room. There are flashes of cool, dissonant genius, but they get buried under chaos. After a while, it stops feeling edgy and starts feeling exhausting. If this is youthful anarchy, I’ll be over here drinking tea in peace.

Not my cuppa, others may enjoy it.

American Alternative/ Noise Rock. I liked the opening track "Dirty Boots", but the rest of the album is meh.

2.5/5 idk I can appreciate this but I don't love any songs and I don't like most of them. Overall it was fine but I had to skip the second half of 'Mote'. I definitely preferred the songs the woman "sang" and I enjoyed some of the playful lyrics. Interestingly, i think my fav was 'Disappearer'.

Not great

‘‘Twas a bad day to have ears.

Sonic Youth, perswoonlijk nooit van gehoord. Maar 90s rock ligt mij over het algemeen wel, dus ik doe dit top moeten vinden. Eerste nummer is iig erg lekker. Nummer 2 en 3 helaas wat minder voor mijn smaak. 2e nummer is erg emo. Nummer 3 gaat meer richting punkrock. Nee, ik kan tijdens het 6e nummer de conclusie trekken dat dit zeer slecht uitgevoerde engelse punk is. Jammer. Erger mij dood zo op de zondagavond. Nee, dit is echt drerrie. Veel herrie, weinig kwaliteit, veel ergernis. 2 voor de moeite.

Favorite songs: Mary-Christ, Dirty Boots Least favorite songs: Mote, Scooter and Jinx, Mildred Pierce 2/5

Meh punk

Usually this is the kind of album I would like but this just felt like noise

Really not our vibe. Slightly screechy and unpleasant at times.

I've now heard a fair few Sonic Youth albums of the back of the list and none of them have impressed me. An overrated band.

5 Sonic Youth albums you need to listen to before you die!? Surely that number can go down? Not bad, but not my thing. To quote everyone's dad, "It's just a load of noisy guitars."

Really front-loaded Sonic Youth here. Feel like I’m one album short of a certificate. Again, great snatches of sound, but the song format manages to detract from the experience. Therefore a definitively awful album? How about no singing at all? My Need for Speed play would be off the charts.

I am not a sonic youth, that’s for sure.

Hmmm, not sure what to think, 2/5

Better than earlier Sonic Youth albums by a mile, but that really isn't saying much. A couple solid singles but a lot of unpleasant noise tracks that detract from the more mainstream songs. Top tracks: Dirty Boots, Kool Thing

disappointing, felt experimental for the sake of being experimental

#358 on Rolling Stones top 500 of all time????? Why? This sounds like every British 80s album on this list, despite Sonic Youth being American.

Meh, no es mi tipo

The only other Sonic Youth album I've listened to at this point is Daydream Nation which I gave a 5. The magic of that album is diluted here, a lot of the songs feel like grunge songs with noise piped on top instead of emergent structures built from the noise while Kim or Thurston mutters at you, which is much more my jam. I really liked Mildred Pierce and Tunic though.

I want to like it, but I don't

i liked the guitar at the beginning of Dirty boots, then it was mostly downhill from there

Noisy alt-rock. What's not to like?

if the last one was forgettable, I dont even remember the song i finished listening to 2 minutes ago

Not for me. Just a bit odd, idk

It’s not bad when it gets out of its own ass. Feels like a band trying so hard not to care that it ends up being obvious they care a lot. Most of it felt like effort disguised as disinterest, but “My Friend Goo” hit the punk note, and “Mildred Pierce” almost worked before they wrecked it. “Titanium Exposé” closed things out better than expected.

I never know what to say about this sort of album - it really should be my sort of thing, but it kinda leaves me cold.

I’ve thought some youth songs are pretty good but this was really discordant and bad

Album everyone expects me to love because I love 90s alt rock but, no.

There is a part in Arlo Guthrie's Alice's Restaurant where he has the audience sing the chorus and when they finish he says "that was horrible" and that's my thought about Goo by Sonic Youth, but in Arlo Guthrie's voice.

Ugh. I mean I guess, you know?

*Sigh*...This did very little for me. Someone told me recently to listen to the lyrics less, which was easy to do with this album. Unfortunately the surrounding din did little to make this an enjoyable experience. A whole point more than Sex Pistols feels generous, but hey it's Friday.

A lot of this album is in the "noise" category

Not a fan of the sonic youths. Quite boring

Didn't do it for me.

I like the first song

Seemed like the cool kids liked Sonic Youth when I was in middle school so I listened to them then and remember thinking that being cool sucks and I was right.

Well, they’re certainly sonic, I’ll give them that. Youth is a bit of a stretch though when they were mostly in their mid to late thirties. I think at that point, they really should have considered renaming the band, maybe to Sonic Tricenarians or something. I genuinely can’t imagine why anyone would like this kind of music. I get that music journalists had to pretend to in order to appear current, and that angsty teens wanting to appear edgy and cool lied to themselves about how good it was, but who actually listens to this and thinks “ooh a lovely bit of nails on chalkboard, what a delight for my earholes”?

Not for me. Didn’t completely hate it though

Screeds of guitar noise which didn’t quite resonate. A single listen probably has not done it justice I think I need to listen again but it didn’t capture me though I feel there is more to it.

no me gustó mucho lamentablemente pero gran tapa 😃

So trendy

Sonic Youth, the Pixies ... both bands that I'm just not cool enough to get. Or maybe the whole point is that there isn't anything to get, other than a bunch of art-rock turds insisting how influential and important both are, even though they never really escaped opening act status for bigger bands in their era.

Just not a fan of this style I guess. It's not bad, it's just not good either. 2/5

Before I listen I ponder the big questions of life: Will I skip the first song? 1 star or 2? The first song was good, melodic even. Then they got into that shtick where a decent song ends in extended feedback. By the end we're back to unlistenable. 2 stars because it was ok to begin with.

This is a typical Sonic Youth album for me. I can tell there's some talent within the layered guitars to make appealing music... but then 90% of the time a song gets ruined by awful vocals, screaming, or one of the guitarist just deciding to untune the guitar and fuck around. So idk, maybe art rock or whatever bullshit they want to call it just doesn't appeal to me. Also they bullied Nardwuar that one time, so I have some disdain any time their music comes up.

Love the cover!

I never could get the hang of Sonic Youth.

Fine. Some good songs, but overall passed me by.

Not the best early 90s rock I’ve ever heard

1/10, 10%

Noisy but not in a way I found nice. Like slam poetry.

08/02/25 I wasn't a fan of the album, it was quite boring.

Maybe I'm just not feeling very punky today. I'd always heard good things about Sonic Youth but this wasn't really for me. Kool Thing brought me back to my parents basement in 2007ish playing Guitar Hero 3.

Favourite song - Tunic (song for karen)

Ehhhhhh. I get what this album is going for and I kinda appreciate it, but I just don't *enjoy* it very much. It's very cynical and aloof in a way that I find tiresome. Musically, this would've been much more interesting if it were released 15-20 years earlier, but for 1990... I dunno. Not every album needs to push the envelope to be good, but this album actively returns to sender. It's just too cool for me, I guess. eye roll/10

Not quite

Like sonic youth. Not this album

I wanted to like them more, but I couldn't. Noise rock isn't my thing it seems - the songs have no directions and lack melodies, it's just quite an annoying and pretentious album. The production work is good, though, it doesn't sound dated at all. 2 stars.

I didnt really care for this album as a whole. Nothing bad about it I just didn't vibe with it.

i like one song on this and i can’t remember what it is

Some solid glam rock, unfortunately it's tainted by an aura of pretentiousness.

Meh, not a fan. The guitar went on for way too long on some tracks. Wannabe punk that didn't hit. 2 for me.

Blech 2/5

Just a lot of noise. Annoying noise.

If the vocals/talking wasn't so cringe inducing i would have rated it higher. It really got the feeling of rebelling teen band where no one really is a great singer but the guitar quality is decent. Kool thing is the only song i recognized and it's a Okey track so that's kool.

the majority of this album was fine songs and the rest was just bad noise

The first half of the album is much more accessible. I know Sonic Youth loved to make noise, and that really comes across throughout the album but especially in the second half. I liked several songs on the first half but really thought a lot of the back half wasn't worth listening to.

Can’t relate

# Playlist track - Dirty Boots # Notes - I've been to a Sonic Youth concert before. SWU Festival. I has kind of hyped to see them, as I have learned of how cool and disruptive and interesting they were. Long story short, it was one of the worst I have ever seen. - I was pleasantly surprised when the opening track, "Dirty Boots" didn't sound like the shitty, pretentious never ending guitar scratching I heard years before. - My joy was to be short lived, tho. As the album goes on, pretty much every track delves into a formulaic noise that just doesn't cut it for me. It's cool when you see it once or twice, but the album never moves away from it and ends up a bit boring and predictable. - I was glad when it ended.

I liked the general sound of this album. The last 4 tracks were particularly bad. 'Mildred Pierce' is literal trash. Most of the songs have a prolonged annoying section. I think I like this genre, but this album is not it. Lyrics are major yap. Almost gave it a 3/5 for the sound of it, but after those last 4 tracks it's gotta be a 2/5

It was alright, but not really me

Very same-y after a couple tracks

My friend Dave and I frequently discuss the albums in the project. About this one he said: "I don’t like those guys at all. Sometimes you dismiss music that I like as 'just noise'. But they really are just noise."

Pretentious art school wankers meet Y2K high school rock. Not terrible just a typical album of the era.

Fun guitar riff in the first track 2.5

I find it boring

Mostly noise and not a fan of the vocals. Probably 2 stars.

2/10. Disappointing. I expected a lot from this album because I was listening to Kool Thing even before I knew about this album and Sonic Youth. But there is nothing surprising about any of the songs on the album, neither in terms of lyricism nor in terms of music.

Oh sick, the second Sonic Youth album in three days? Niiiiiice. This one was WORSE than 'Dirty.' I could, for the most part, stand what was going on on 'Dirty,' but this album I could not. The woman lead singer still sucks ass. This is music made for 90s teens who love smoking cigarettes in the bathroom and love calling people "posers." The songs with the guy singer were ight.

Not much there to keep my interest. Again, to do some interesting stuff with guitars. That's the only redeeming quality.

Just did not really connect with this recording. A lot of repetitive guitar and distortion. A couple of interesting songs lyrically but not something I feel strongly about.

Uninteresting and pretentious. I'm really surprised this band has such a cult following. Do people actually enjoy their music or is it more of liking it makes you look cool kind of thing? I do enjoy noise rock but I also want to have it go somewhere or have some interesting ideas on top of it. This album simply doesn't deliver. The best example of that is my favorite track from the album - Mote. It starts off real good, everything clicks, the vocals sound cool, you have this underwater effect in the chorus which feels a bit dated but fits in well with the rest of the song.. and then they just decide to kill the rest of the song with a bunch of noise that goes nowhere. I feel like they're telling me we're too cool to go with the typical song structure, catchy melodies, no, let's just end the song and go with something for the real connaisseurs. I have to say, if I was a teen that would definitely work on me. Maybe I'm just too old for that

I think this record started off pretty promising with 'Dirty Boots', and 'Tunic (Song For Karen)' that I particularly liked. But after sitting through everything I feel like the melodies and delicacies are lost in too much noise and distortion. This definitely peaked at the end of 'Mildred Pierce' which just turned into some scream fiesta for no good reason. In summary it had some decent songs at the start, but nothing to warrant any higher rating.

Man what a pretentious album. The riffs are actually quite good but the lyrics are so pretentious it hurts (especially the spoken word). The tail end of the album nearly warranted a 1 star, but going to give it a weak 2.

Not sure what to think of this one...which is great! On one hand, it's not a very good album. Lots of noise for the sake of noise it seems. I found myself checking to see how many songs were left on the record multiple times - which is generally a sign of an album I am not enjoying. But on the other hand, there's some catchy stuff here and there, and this being the first Sonic Youth album I've listened to, I can see the musical influence they had on several bands to come after them - several of who I do enjoy quite a bit more. So there is that feeling of "if not for this, then...." that I felt way more listening to this album than I do listening to someone like Robert Johnson, for example - even though I'd much prefer his actual music. In the end though, I found it more boring and tedious to finish than exciting and interesting, so while 2 stars is maybe a bit harsh, I think it's fair.

There are songs on it i'd liked prior to getting this album, unfortunately I didn't find much more to enjoy. Gets one star knocked off for 'My Friend Goo' existing.

The parts where they actually played music were okay. The parts where they dragged chairs around and screached were not. I was happy when it ended. Stand-out: Dirty Boots

01) Dirty Boots - 6,5 02) Tunic (Song for Karen) - 6,0 03) Mary-Christ - 6,0 04) Kool Thing - 6,5 05) Mote - 5,5 06) My Friend Goo - 6,0 07) Disappearer - 6,0 08) Mildred Pierce - 3,0 09) Cinderella's Big Score - 6,0 10) Scooter + Jinx - 4,5 11) Titanium Exposé - 5,0 TOTAL: 5,55 (56/100)

Sonic Youth are boring. The iconography of this front cover is the best thing they've ever done.

Mostly boring and pretentious. Art rock should still be interesting, which this album definitely isn't. A few good punk moments.

I commend the amount of experimentation that went into this album. Unfortunately, for me, most often this experimentation leads to songs that lack any kind of cohesion, which trickles out into the album as a whole. I can't say that I connected with anything on the record outside of momentary interludes on certain tracks.

Started out alright but turned much too noisy towards the end. I was sick of this album about 30 minutes into it. My Friend Goo may be one of the worst songs I have ever heard.

I feel like they're a good punk band, but there's just so much unnecessary crap thrown in everywhere for no reason

It’s cool noise I feel no need to ever listen to again

Sonic Youth's "Goo" is a solid effort that showcases their signature noise rock sound. However, it lacks the raw intensity and experimentation of their earlier work. While tracks like "Dirty Boots" and "Kool Thing" (featuring Chuck D) are catchy and energetic, the album overall feels a bit more polished and accessible, which some may find detracts from their appeal.

Three of five (!) Sonic Youth albums down and I gotta be honest, I get why they're here but I have a hard time believing anyone legitimately likes this. So many song at a minimum end in something weird and unpleasant. This one is slightly better than Daydream Nation, which was slightly better than E.V.O.L., but not enough for another half a star. Kim's voice is cool though.

I didn’t like them back then and I still don’t like them now. This is not very good

Punk rock sound from 1990, I'm sure this is influential but it's hard to swallow

I like the actual music, but I have never been a fan of the singers. I like their attitude and messaging. Their singers have always turned me off.

Good stuff from my youth

It seems as if the noises were supposed to represent the music.

Started off pretty good but my interest tailed off by the end

Ik kom hier gwn niet in

Not enjoyable

- It's kinda boring and static. There's just not that much for me to latch onto ..... maybe it's me .... -

music was good, especially the guitar but i didn't enjoy the vocals as it was talk singing a lot of the time. and that is what ruined the whole album for me.

I've read so much about what a pivotal figure Kim Gordon was, but can't seem to enjoy her music.

Quite a few people seem to dig Sonic Youth. I’m not one of them. Overall, Goo was noisy and dull, but not unlistenable. Makes me think of clove cigarettes and teenagers drinking coffee trying to be edgy.

I think I wanted to like it but kind of just didn’t. Every song felt like it should have ended but then there was like 2 minutes of guitar noise or some bullshit. 4/10

2 I didn’t really enjoy it. Just a lot of noise and poor vocals. Only kinda ok song was cinderellas big score

I always assumed Sonic Youth would sound cooler than this but nope. about as alt rock as you can get and a little on the heavier side. none of the tracks really stood out to me, but Kool Thing goes pretty hard and sounds sorta like a Foo Fighters song.

This album was not for me at all. But I have a good friend who loves Sonic Youth so I’ll give them an extra ⭐️

I can't decide if I don't really know Sonic Youth, or if I think they are a different band than what I'm thinking of. I was kind of surprised to see this as 1990 because it sounds more mid 90s to me. I guess that's a good thing as maybe they were more of a trendsetter. This album really reminds me of high school, but not during my time there personally, but the vibe of the album is very high school drama club and that seems to remain a fairly consistent vibe over multiple generations. Lyrically many songs had me picturing the SNL skit about a high school theater show. Everyone all in black, speaking what is very deep thoughts for teenagers. Overall it's kind of a mixed bag for me. The only single I recognize is "Kool Thing" from guitar hero. Favorite track "Kool Thing" 2/5

There's definitely potential here. I quite like the guitar work and bass, but the female vocals are not for me. The male vocals are fine. There's too much distortion for my taste though, so unfortunately it drops to a 2.

Noise rock in its purest. To the untrained ears (mine's), the wacky guitar riffs are a tough selling point when all the songs sound samey and the lyrics banal. Favorite: mote Least: Mildred Pierce

I remember some of these songs, but vaguely

I like a lot of music that’s similar to Sonic Youth. Sonic Youth, however, just sounds generic and boring to me.

This is horrible. 1.72 per track.

I hate when people scream for no reason in songs.

pretty rough sounding. i liked the first few

Ну как-то не зашло. Были, в целом, прикольные моменты, но меньше грязи хотелось бы. Слишком панково, но недостаточно, чтобы кайфовать от звучания. Ну и голоса слабые.

Too much noise for my taste.

Not a big Sonic Youth fan, there’s better bands who put out this kind of music.

"Dirty Boots" was a really good song with a catchy opening hook. I liked "Kool Thing" and "Titanium Expose" as well. All three were well-crafted songs that held my interest. The rest of the album I couldn't decide it they were trying a little too hard, or weren't trying hard enough. It was just a lot of noise. Two stars for three good songs.

I have been advised to listen to dirty instead. Didn’t really care for this.

Tunic (Song For Karen) //

Sounds like a garage band

Well, this album really got me stuck and stopped me from keep going on the 1001 albums generator. I am not gonna lie: it is a hell of a cd, literal. It is kinda disgusting hearing all those noises. It feels bad mixed. I will only give it 2 stars just for the always excellent “Kool Thing”. Hope to be wrong.

Two words: really weird. Three words: Makes no sense. Four words: Explain this to me. It was just weird some were calm than some were loud and yelling

Originally I was gonna give this a 3 but I bumped it down to a 2 because the lyrics don't make much sense most of the time and half the songs are just fuzzy, scratchy, overdrive-filled guitar riffs. For Mote and Titanium Espose about half the songs were just overdrive guitar screeching. That takes no skill and just hurts your ears I don't understand what you think you're accomplishing by doing that. Also the song Mildred Pierce is absolute trash. Who in the world even is Mildred Pierce and why should I care that she's dead? We will never know because the whole song is just screaming Mildred Pierce or why. It's just not good songwriting or good songs.

Seems like a "cool" band, but the music isn't particularly exciting to me. Some interesting soundscapes, but just a generally forgettable album to me. Nothing stands out. Lyrics don't speak to me. Listened at the gym Listening env: 3/5

It was ok, couldn't get into it.

Third Sonic Youth album I've been given, some of this was, I dunno, Ok? But at this point I've steadily grown to dislike them more and more. See you on the next two!

Eh not for me but sounds good for what it is. Doesn't really do anything special not that it needs to but just sounds like every other album in the genre. Scott Pilgrim ass music. Non conformist quoth the raven ass music. Wallflower ass music. Mom found my weed pen ass music. Kool Thing is a fantastic song however, and sometimes bad vocals definitely can make a song sound more raw and or emotional but they mostly just sound bad bad in this album idk.

местами совсем скример, нет спасибо

Meh. It takes a few tracks before the album appears to rock, but I found it dull, repetitive and not really my cup of tea. Some punk really catches me. This did not. Low 2

I now its an oldie but feels like to refined grunge to me

Badly tuned strings and uninspired vocals. Got a headache halfway through.

Didn’t hear a single mention of Sonic’s origin or youth….this is a nah from me dawg.

Deprimerend.

It was definitely one of the albums I ever heard it started off okay then went down from there

Though there are some interesting noisy droning guitar driven pieces that work for me, there is a bit too much boring unmelodic noise and weirdness to warrant repeat listens.

I knew the name Sonic Youth sounded familiar. Then I instantly recognized Kool Thing from Guitar Hero 3. Overall this album is kind of meh. Gives off very idgaf vibes and as a result I don't care much for it either. I'm not huge on the reverberated guitar aesthetic and the female vocals aren't great.

Started ok. Has some cringy parts. Atdi did it better. Last song was pretty cool.

Has its moments but in the end its a one and done.

More like poo.

good guitars once in a while. mote is the song where i realized this is a 2.

Gay noise

I'm all for grungy, nonconformity music, but this was not it. Some of the songs were not half bad but the spoken word songs were not it.

# 59 : Nothing special. No hype for Sonic Youth. It's pretty generic "Noise Rock" that's overrated. Disappearer

Abrasive, punchy, but mostly tuneless and entirely forgettable.

The only redeeming quality is the fact that it is in the rock/indie genre.

Not really for me, this one. Have heard of Sonic Youth but don't remember ever listening to them. It does sound quite modern (or more likely it's more that other more modern bands grew up listening to this), but it's really missing something for me. A lot of the songs are way too drawn out in a way that doesn't really work for me; when you're playing music this loud, it really needs something to sustain it if you're going beyond the 5 minute mark per track, and this just doesn't have enough. Also, the industrial noise bits really do my head in. 2/5.

Det är för skränigt för min smak.

Some of this album was good and some was screechy random sounds

Gave a it a few tries but couldn't quite get into it. They're like a worse version of Pixies. Not terrible though, I think my favourite is Titanium Expose.

2 of 5

My friend Goo goes, “Sonic Youth is poo.”

As far as I'm concerned, Sonic Youth has only one good song and it isn't on this album.

Felt very low effort and like the people playing the music didn’t even want to

I listened to this first thing in the morning and was singularly unimpressed. However, whilst I was waiting for the sun to come up and the only noise I could hear was the cat talking to the wind I thought I would give it another spin. The first four songs are definitely for late night sessions. They drip with smoke and insouciance. But then it just degenerated into discordant self-indulgent claptrap. I do love the cover though.

Sonic Youth just seemed like a band I should like. But in the 90s it was really hard to dabble into music you didn't know. I really liked Kim Gordon but I couldn't justify spending $12 on a Sonic Youth CD when I still had to complete my Joni & Dylan collection. In the late 90s they opened up for Wilco and Jen and I got there early to see them. I think a song and a half in we said let's go wait in the beer line. So much noise. I'll admit I enjoyed Goo more than the last Sonic Youth album we heard in this endeavor. I'll also admit I made a good decision not buying any of their CDs in the 90s. Not my jam.

Poo, more like lol

Very tiring.

This one took me a while to get around to. I'm talking almost 2 years here. I kept starting it, getting distracted, then forgetting about it and having to restart it. Therefore, I've heard Dirty Boots about 7 times now. Frankly, it still hasn't grown on me. I was hopeful that the tail end of the album would get better - it didn't. I can get behind the music, it's great alt rock music. But good lord, every time they open their mouths I want to scream. It's like someone put a soundtrack over a crappy liberal arts college spoken word poetry slam. I think this would be a 3 if there were no vocals at all, which is sad because the vocals make this teeter on a 1. I'm feeling generous today though.

D+ Dirty Boots - 2 Tunic (Song for Karen) - 2 Mary-Christ - 2 Kool Thing - 1 Mote - 1, would’ve been two if it was half the length My Friend Goo - 1 Disappearer - 2 Mildrid Pierce - 2 Cinderella’s Big Score - 1 Scooter and Jinx - 1 Titanium Expose - 2 I’m so tired of these sh** 2’s. I’ve had like eight 2’s in the last 24 hours. These albums are so uninspiring. At least this one has a great album cover. In the wise words of Anton Ego, “ you know what I'm craving? A little perspective. That's it. I'd like some fresh, clear, well seasoned perspective.” Since you’re all out, Generator, you provide the music and I’ll provide the perspective. As for Sonic Youth, they should stick to the vintage t-shirt business and quit music.

Fomeque. Históricamente importante, seguro, pero no es algo que me guste escuchar.

This wasn't the worst thing I'd heard this week.

Didn't exactly love this. Some songs are fine but alot of it is just boring or annoying screaming/nonsensical rambling. Really wanted to get into it but just not my thing. 4/10.

The beginning of this album was totally good it might have gotten a four. And then Mildred pierce came on and I don’t know what my ears did to you but that is legit assault and someone should be in jail for that song.

I wish I could say I liked Sonic Youth. I feel like I should, like I could get really into this band… but they just don’t do anything for me.

Not my thing

Not my cup of tea. Bit too noisy

Kinda punk, kinda grunge. Music is OK, don't like the vocals.

Some ok songs others just seemed pointless

The music itself is fine, but very easily fades into the background. I didn't mind the songs with the predominantly male singer, but very much did not enjoy the songs with the female singer, as her voice just doesn't hit my ears right. Nothing intrigued me about this album

didn’t like. i don’t know what to say anymore.

The cool kids I went to school when listened to Sonic Youth. Now I just feel bad for them. Yuck.

A few good songs but most of the album is hardly listenable

OK, songs. Good melodies, but everything with heavy distorted guitars. Is there no other music under the 1000 best albums?

Alternativ rock, punket, indie, ikke rigtig mig

It's a facade of exciting hard rock but underneath it's a pretty dull album except a few songs like Kool Thing and Dirty Boots. There's too many songs I would consider "skips".

Favorites: Dirty boots Tunic (song for Karen)

I can hear their influence but not my kind of sound.

Fine - had this, or had Kool Thing, when it was released. It's sonic youth, it doesn't veer far from that course

A little too abstract for my liking.

I could have swore these blokes were British but I guess not. Kool Thing is from guitar hero so that was cool but nothing else stood out to me.

Not really.

Kim Gordon's singing drops this like one and a half stars. It is out of tune and not very musical and it makes it pretty hard to enjoy the songs that she sings in. The others are decent, when they're not making random noise.

- not for me

Expectation: "Daydream Nation" but more mainstream. Reality: Not even close to "Daydream Nation".

After listening to this, I can’t find a song I’d like to hear again. It wasn’t bad, just forgettable. Maybe I’ll try again

Didn't love it!

Artsy Noise Rock is not for me.

Some cool guitar noise and that’s about the only thing I enjoyed about this. The lack of syncopation (or any rhythm other than constant straight 8ths) was just killing me by the end of this record My friend goo is is so stupid lol 1.7

I don’t know why people think they can be singers. It was good when there was no singing

Standouts: Kool Thing, Disappear, Mildred Pierce [because I love the old 1940s movie!] I've heard this album quite a few times. It really does nothing for me. It isn't bad, it is completely forgettable. Every time I hear it, it is like it is for the first time. 2.5/5

I liked like two of the earlier tracks in the album. Most of the rest was pretty meh to me. Album really lost me by the end, really disliked one or two of the songs around the end.

I was ready to hate this because its Rock AGAIN and the start was already terrible with Dirty Boots, insanely boring to me and was not a fan. But then it kinda turned on me with "Tunic" even though its the classic Title of Song Title of Song Tiiiitle of SOoooooong SOOOOONG it was still somewhat enjoyable. "Mary-Christ" was just fun all around, probably my favourite of the album and then "Kool Thing" was just really good. At this point I was ready to rate this 4/5 and then it stunlocked me with "My Friend Goo", "Mildred Pierce", "Cinderella's Big Score" and "Scooter and Jinx" being the worst shit I've ever heard. After that "Titanium Expose" was too long and not possible to enjoy.

I got four songs in and couldn't finish the album. A bit too dirgy punk for me. Nothing particularly stood out. Bonus points for the album cover though.

A punk alt rock album that isn’t my favorite kind of music. It has elements of late 80s alternative style with the weird or edgy lyrics and the guitars that are distorted. The uptempo matches the punk styles. Those two combined show that this album had influences over time but I found it not that enjoyable to listen to. 4.5/10

J'avais pas trop envie d'écouter ça

This one was kind of a slog.

I absolutely can’t stand this type of rock where they use droning voices that have no real tune to them. And the boys say hey goo what’s new, my friend goo just says P-U???? Are you kidding me? Garbage. Reminds me of the le tigre album. Some songs are not wretched so I won’t give it a 1.
