He's nuts

Unfortunately, I love this man and all his music

Damn, while I may not be a fan of the man and his public facing persona, this is a damn good record. The chap can write a song. However, the bad vibes around him severely limit my desire to listen to him. These records aren't made in a vacuum and there's plenty of other good stuff to hear..without the baggage. Too bad.

Soothing

I would have rated much higher for a Smiths album. Docked a star for Morrissey being an insufferable walker as always.

This Alternative Pop album feels like being trapped at a quiet dinner table with someone who turns every ordinary conversation into a long, sorrowful monologue about how unfair life has been to him. The guitars ring gently in the background, the bass and drums move at an unhurried pace, and Morrissey stretches his words into mournful, theatrical phrases. There is little urgency to pull me along, and the songs often seem to settle into the same slow, melancholy mood. His constant air of wounded self-importance becomes tiresome, while the restrained instrumentation rarely provides enough contrast to wake me up. I sit there politely waiting for the conversation to move on, but the next song feels like another round of the same complaints.

before listen: Not another Morrissey, no god, please no no nono noooooooooo. couple of things to note: this is the first artist I'm hearing a second album from during this project. Secondly, I already don't like this guy's voice. Lyrics, yes, but I'm not a lyric girl. Third, it's only 39 minutes, so that's good. Apparently, this album is supposed to sound similar to The Smiths, which I also don't like. Also, why does he look like Joaquin Phoenix in this pic? I'm at least going to give it a chance. during listen: Hey, I actually like Spring-Heel Jim and Billy Budd.?? Am I going to add this one? I'm maybe halfway through, and I'm genuinely shocked that I'm enjoying this album/. don't know what I'm going to rate it yet, but yeah, that was pretty good.

Mixed feeling on this album. It was not offensive but felt bland

Never been a bit Morrissey guy. This wasn't bad though- a good mix of sound (not too depressing) and pleasant enough. Overall- decent. I could see how people would enjoy it

Not another Morrissey record! That dude is such a whiny c*** and his music sucks.

Another banger from Moz, my hella problematic, annoying comedic genius.

Okay as an 80's throwback.

I am not listening to morrisey on a Saturday I want to enjoy my day off

Easily the best Morrissey album I got so far, but that's not a very high bar to clear. The second half in particular is mostly very forgettable. I doubt I'll come back to it, but I'll save a couple of tracks for future listens. Favourite track: Why Don't You Find out for Yourself

His best album. I was pretty late coming to his solo work and it was much better than I thought it would be and this one blew me away. Listened to it constantly for weeks. The consistency, the atmosphere, lyrics, and music all combine here. 4.5 rounded up Heard before? Yes Owned: Yes, 112/448 (25%) Will I get: Already have

I much preferred Morrissey when he was a member of The Smiths. I feel like much of what he did solo was watered down.

1 of 1 voice

Lessissey would be nice...

This was kind of intriguing, but still not really my style.

Good and obnoxious simultaneously

Morrissey and Taylor Swift both write songs where you can't help but side with the person who they claim wronged them and both take 0 accountability in their lyrics

I need a rule: ugly gay shouldn’t put their face on the cover I can’t really hate his music.

Separating art from the artist, this is an ok album, very melodic in a classic the smiths style.

He does it again. I don't like the Smiths songs with his voice, I think it ruins them. But his solo stuff it seems to always work

Just a tad bit bland, needs some seasoning. Love his voice, but he's not really doing anything above and beyond what he did with the Smiths, so it just comes across as flat. 'Lifeguard Sleeping', for example, is an interesting idea but lacks in execution. Rating: 4.5/10 Favorite Song: Why Don't You Find Out for Yourself

The prick is back. What a fuckwit. To think 30yrs after this album, this absolute twat went out of his way to destroy his legacy. Fuck off, Morrissey. 1.

music is love

Top : Speedway Flop : Lifeguard Sleeping, Girl Drowning

Nice voice

I didn’t like the music and then after googling, I didn't like the person even more. Yikes. 1.

Actually enjoyed a couple of tracks (some nice new wave reverb guitar sounds) but mostly boring and Morrissey is a racist piece of shit, so… no thanks.

Go ed Stephen

I normally have a visceral and negative reaction to Morrisey's music (among other things), but this wasn't bad actually. I'd give it a 3, but I don't think I'd ever return to this album due to pre-existing bias against the guy.

In my collection

Very much like the other Morrissey that came before. You can see the dividing line between Morrissey and The Smiths clearer all the time. As usual, Moz has a great voice, but lyrically and musically, not a whole lot to talk about. Good enough, but not good enough to make Morrissey any less insufferable.

Unfortunately, I really liked this. It’s certainly not as good as the smiths. However, it unlocks some deep teenage emo self that I can’t help but enjoy. Morrissey is such a twat

Boy, I don't know why but I find Morrissey so captivating

Per the standard Morrissey requisite, this album requires multiple listens to fully sink in. That said, it sorta lands where 'Your Arsenal' fell for me. It's fine, but 'Viva Hate' is better, and I'd rather see other underrepresented artists on this list. Both 'Your Arsenal' and this album are about 2.5s for me, and since I bumped the former up, I'm going to bump this one down - which is fair since I also thought the former had better energy.

Fuck Morissey! I kid, I kid. I still like him. But this ain’t it. Similar to yesterday’s Peter Gabriel album, this could have been omitted. I think we have a good representation oh his work. This an unnecessary and lazy choice.

Spring-Heeled Jim

It’s impossible for me to rate this album objectively. Before Manchester Orchestra there was Interpol. Before Interpol there was Tool (there will always be Tool) and before that was Morrissey and The Smiths (the former above latter). From 1986-1996 I religiously consumed everything Morrissey produced. These songs are engrained in my psyche - every lyric every note. That said, this was probably the first album he produced that wasn’t an immediate love - the first time I suppose I realized he might be running out of ideas. It would be 10-12 years and the semi-disappointing Your Arsenal before I’d try to get back into him. Anyway - this album was a fun listen but something I even today would say is not his best work. 4/5

It’s fine

zzzZZZZzzzzzZZZZZZzzzzzz

Komischer Kauz

I love the Smiths, but always thought Morrissey was an arrogant ass (not wrong), so I never listened to any of his solo work. That was a mistake on my part. This is incredible. This one sounded more "Smithy" than the last solo album I listened to. Speedway was the highlight.

Wanted to not like it but couldn't. Very listenable. Damn you.

Yeah, this was decent. Not my style, but it had good moments and I liked this guys voice. 3/5 ⭐️ 268/1081

Snooze fest

"Vauxhall and I" is a quite lovely album. Sonically, it marks a distinct shift from its predecessor, "Your Arsenal" - which was a hard-edged, muscular-sounding record - moving toward a more restrained, subtle sound. Rather than relying on overt aggression or heavy melodrama, the songs benefit from precise arrangements and thoughtful lyrical themes regarding ageing, loss, and isolation, making it a more introspective and wistful collection. While there are a number of standout tracks, 'Speedway' is a strong candidate for my favourite Morrissey solo song across his entire catalogue. On an album otherwise defined by restraint, 'Speedway' breaks through with a wall of noise and a relentless guitar line before settling into a hypnotic, purposeful rhythm that builds to a dramatic close. It anchors the record, providing a bold resolution to what is a very gentle album. It's one of my favourite Morrissey albums. 1 "Now My Heart Is Full" (5/5) 2 "Spring-Heeled Jim" (4/5) 3 "Billy Budd" (4/5) 4 "Hold On to Your Friends" (5/5) 5 "The More You Ignore Me, the Closer I Get" (5/5) 6 "Why Don't You Find Out for Yourself" (5/5) 7 "I Am Hated for Loving" (4/5) 8 "Lifeguard Sleeping, Girl Drowning" (5/5) 9 "Used to Be a Sweet Boy" (4/5) 10 "The Lazy Sunbathers" (5/5) 11 "Speedway" (5/5) Total - 51 Average - 4.6 432/1001 228/432 albums reviewed were new to me.

Not much of a Smiths guy either, but Johnny Marr, Andy Rourke, and Mike Joyce certainly help make Morrissey more tolerable. Not that I'm hating this or anything, it's just much more bland so there's not as much to help Morrissey sound good. It's just mid through and through. Boring alt rock. I suppose "The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get" is a decent enough song to stand out a bit. Creepy title though. "Lifeguard Sleeping, Girl Drowning" is particularly bad. I am not great at picking up on and analyzing lyrics, but Morrissey has a lot of annoying song titles - several of which are on this album.

Borderline 2.5 but got an extra half star just because of the Smiths

Morrissey eh; what a massive roaster. I think Lonely Tourist summed my feelings up very well in the song Tom and the Library: "The grim first chapters of Northern poetry, give no real hint at the author's latent bigotry... endless snide... it's too much for Tom, he's had enough, he's had his fill..."

It was fine

Dean Freeman who took the photo , is the son of Bob Freeman who created the first 5 Beatles album covers. Supposedly it’s a homage to 50s glamour portraits. Mike Owen does it much better. The Smiths albums are ingrained in students lifestyles and are rightly considered groundbreaking. Morrissey’s vocal is still delicious on Vauxhall but much too loud and the music is horrid. Not sure why this is in the 1001?

This was more tolerable than most Morrissey but he’s still a cunt

Every song sounded the same

ok to have it as a background listen but overall not impressed

kind of a slay. you gotta hand it to him! :-(

This album is the 1994 Morrissey. I'll listen to it as such and I'll ignore the right-wing crap he likes to spread these days. Don't know what happened. I love this album, songwriting is amazing and lyrics are witty as expected. Maybe not his very best and definitely not "The Smiths" best but still deserves a 4 for me.

YAYYYYY!!!!!!

Buenisimo!

That's 2 smiths albums and now the third by morrissey. WHY!? There is nothing special about any of them. Between all 5 they have scored a total of 7, and I think that is because I was generous to both smiths ones. This really isn't necessary to have so many.

Another gorgeous offering from Morrissey. Lyrically and musically brilliant.

The problem with a Morrissey solo album is it lacks the chemistry which made The Smiths great. He may sing his songs well and have the clever lyrics, the tunes are good, but do not reach anywhere near that 'greatness' of his former band. This is cited as his best, yes it is good, but I've only played it three times in thirty years. He is a legend, Poorer and Whyte aren't and there is the rub. Its good but its not Meat is Murder.

This is straight-down-the-middle take-it-or-leave-it type fluff-filler. I didn't hate it, and certainly didn't love it. It's just inoffensive and a bit bland.

I'm no Morrissey fan, this is an unappealing listening task. I hope unpleasant personality is not evident in these songs - maybe I can just hear mellifluous voice as part of the music, without attending to the words?? I'll read some reviews first, to see if I can approach this album by small bites, from the more popular onwards. Speedway - the music is mildly interesting at first, but then it takes a lot of chugging to get through the very spread-out words. The More You Ignore Me - someone not Marr trying to be a bit like him? It's pretty tedious. Why Don't You Find Out For Yourself: down the pub, this music would be boring; given his clear articulation, I would listen to lyrics, and find the type of self-pity somewhat repugnant. I'm sick of even typing out the overlong titles, the songs aren't worth it. If I just leave the music running while I read something unrelated - the music is not too offensive?? Not so much faint praise as pity stemming the damnation. It's Pretty Poor, 3/10. (And that's doing everyone the favour of not zooming in on the lyrics for what might actually be offensive about them.)

I like sad and melodramatic music, but his overly pretentious whining makes me feel gross

Once again, probably in too good of a mood to listen to this

no no no

Sorry Steven, you're just not that interesting

The album was quite soothing and easy to listen to. It made me kinda sleepy. At the same time that could also be taken as boring I guess. The guy himself however, can absolutely go fuck himself.

I hate this man with my entire being. That being said, this was a good album. I hate that he's good at what he does.

There are so many great albums from 1994 that are not on this list and they decide to go with another Morrisey album? They don't have Vitalogy, Throwing Copper, Purple on this but this leftover from 80s college radio is here? Ugh AS IF!

Morrissey is fine, but no good for yard work

Super chill

Perfectly fine album, like most of his solo stuff it does just roll into one. I got to the end and tried to pick a single track highlight but couldn’t remember any of them.

(I really try my hardest not to let my issues with the artist alter my review unless it impacts the album) Ngl, this one was not my fav. I normally like The Smiths but I don’t listen to much Morrissey without Marr. And I don’t feel like I’ve been missing out  Season: Early Winter Favorite Song: Why Don’t You Find out for Yourself

why the random background noise?!

Terrible person, great music!!!

I would give 3 1/2 stars if I could. I really like his voice.

Deserves relisten. This feels very cinematic, and a dark, melancholic kind of cinematic feeling it brings on. The vocals feel front and center which is good and OK, but the instruments almost feel too far back in the mix sometimes, because there are interesting things going on there with the accompaniment. Paying attention to the lyrics is essential, however, for the full experience. More darker topics here. Morrissey is a good singer.

unfortunately good

I prefer this to his earlier album from 1988 I listened to some time ago. Some of this echoes in The National's work.

just a dreary version of the smiths that i know

Sympa mais rien ne me marque

fuck this guy but pretty good album gotta admit

I think over the years I've been conditioned into hating Morrissey because it's fun to make fun of his politics and make fun of the fact I'll probably never get to see him live because he cancels every show. But, listening to this album in full again after 30 years, I was overwhelmed with this feeling of nostalgia and I felt that spark, and I know there is a part of me that can never truly hate 1994 Morrissey music. It's just really good.
