Reviews (page 2 of 7)

Yes there's a lot of hate for Morrissey on here and he richly deserves it. But bad people make great art, and this really is a pretty perfect album. In the early nineties he was one of the last major artists to put singles out regularly not on albums. After Viva Hate (clearly an album he had songs ready for straight out of the gate) there were two very patchy ones while he put his strongest material out as a great run of singles. Not here. It's the (brief) arrival of Morrisey as the maker of great albums. His trademark combo of melancholy, nostalgia and snark has never been employed in a stronger set of songs. The arrangements (which can often be crude let's face it) are varied and noticably softer at times. It is a stunning set and remains so despite the last thirty years of awfulness. Special mention to pocket epic closer Speedway and the much-lauded drum sound mentioned elsewhere. Downhill from here.

I’m a Morrissey and The Smiths fan.

Brilliant lyrics

One of Morrissey's best albums and one knows why. It is his lyricism on a peak level. It's all there and like an instrument of its own that sucks you in. While Viva Hate might have been more interesting musically, this one would be my recommendation if you'd wanted to get into his work.

One of my favourite surprises from this project was discovering just how prolific Morrissey has been since he left The Smiths, and how high quality some of his solo albums have been, including this one incidentally. I loved The Smiths, but lost interest in Morrissey as all I had heard from him solo had been a bit weak. Looking back, this was a big oversight, as his solo material ticks many boxes for me. Good lyrics, wry humour, excellent delivery, interesting music. This feels like another 5 star album.

Amazing. Just amazing

Moz at his best!

Ok. Another death of the author situation. We all know some great art comes from a different kind of mind. Sand gets in and irritates a clam's mouth, it spits on it in defense, viola, a beautiful pearl is created. Not easy to ignore Morrissey's personal POV and choices, but the work is just so damn good. The feel, the depth, the mood, the soul. I don't think he's all bad. None of us are. How great is it that maybe he shared the best parts of himself with us.

I'd imagined I'd like this one, but never expected it to be a 5. Guess Morrissey's really that good (as a musician!).

Exzellentes Album mit einer schlüssigen Attitüde im Smiths Stil. Tolle Songs sind „Now my hart is Full“, „The more you ignorieren …“, „Why don‘t You find out yourself“ und „ Speedway“. Das Album kombiniert die ruhige Stimme von Morrisey mit guten Elektro und Bass Sounds. 😊👍

So good, this one is definitely up there for my favorite of his solo stuff. Only a couple of the backside that I don't get much out of. My appreciation for Morrissey has grown a ton over this project, I only gave Viva Hate 4 stars previously but would put that one at 5 stars with this one. Rating: 4.8

Great album

Always been a fan. But this is as good as any of his releases

One of mythe two great albums by Morrissey.

Not only is the man devilishly handsome, but I love the smiths. I knew this was for me before I even hit play. I need a pint

Great album

Always enjoyed Marcy. I grabbed the deluxe remaster that included live versions of all the songs so it was doubly good.

Another Morrissey album in this list and one that could likely be considered his best work to date, with closing track Speedway possibly the best solo song he has released. "All of the rumours keeping me grounded I never said that they were completely unfounded And all those lies, written lies, twisted lies Well, they weren't lies, they weren't lies, they weren't lies"

Now My Heart Is Full, The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get

Pretty collection of tunes with great guitar.

One of my absolute faves, ever

Now My Heart Is Full, The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get

I love Morrisey! And the smiths

Just perfect. Probably clouded slightly by my strong memories attached to this one, but it definitely does it for me.

i really liked it and it’s def my music taste :-)

Morriseys strongest solo work, I can’t get along with viva hate super well, nor can I say your arsenal or you are the quarry quite reach the heights of the smiths… this does. It’s probably the biggest grower of these albums but the opening 5 tracks and speedway as a closer are some of his best work. Is side two weaker? Yes but the queen is dead has an equal amount of filler both are 5/5’s end of story

Let your guard down for a minute, catch Morrissey religion. Vauxhall And I was a total surprise mostly delightful and entirely melodramatic. Each melody is hummably familiar, mood-as-theme works perfectly. This also sounds rather unlike the Smiths, which helps the vocal choices not-grate.

sonzeira, um grande mestre

One of the easiest to give a five star.

Now My Heart Is Full, The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get

Morrissey has the inimitable sound. Drones on and hits very dissonant tones with his voice. Genius.

Is this my first solo Morrissey? I think it is, I know which albums of his are on the list and three of them might very well be his top three albums. I think I slightly prefer "Kill Uncle" over "You Are The Quarry" but it's not my list, is it? Besides this is "Vauxhall And I"

Classic Moz. Well, he has better albums with or without Johnny Marr but this is still really good stuff with some essential songs for any fan. Moz always gets a 5.

Really liked this one. Somehow it put me on a very good mood.

Cool 90-S pop. Clean and rich sound!

This was way too relatable.

This is cool, I didn’t really know what to expect from morrissey but I like this

I like the sound of this one. This is one I would consider buying and would look into more of his music.

Ugh, Morrissey is so much better than I want him to be.

Does Morrissey have the biggest chasm between his approval rating as a person and the approval rating of his music? Maybe Kanye? Although Kanye is almost in a different tier due to crossing way more lines than Morrissey ever had plus the mental health angle. I feel like Billy Corgan is the most apt American comparison to Morrissey. However with Billy it’s really his insecurity that makes him off putting so people just see him as a (sneakily giant) baby. Thank you for coming to my TED talk

Jeez this was frickin amazing. I didn’t wanna like it because it’s him but I loved it.

Morrissey being an insufferable twat aside, I really enjoyed this album, and lyrically and musically it is very good. Now My Heart is Full is head and shoulders above a collection of great songs. 4 stars

Lol. "Doet me best denken aan the smiths" dacht ik. Blijkt de zanger daarvan te zijn. Echt mooie alternatieve rock.

getting really into morrissey lmao. what does that mean about me idk but. perfect rainy day album. like the vibes are fantastic for driving in the rain and everything's all gray outside... feels very twin peaks-y. but yeah this was lovely

Morrissey makes a Britpop album, and it fucking rules. And that stinks a bit because he's a garbage person, but I gotta be true to myself and love him in spite of himself. Even at his most overdramatic, there's a thoughtfulness here that is impressive and poignant. It's good - plain and simple.

surprisingly nice

t abien

This Morrissey album was actually pretty good. I didn't like The Quarry, he sounded way too much like a Smiths parody then. That album made me not feel too great on his solo stuff. However this one I feel could pass as a Smiths album, I guess he still had the same mojo left. Musically, it has all the jangle pop characteristics and Morissey's very unique songwriting and singing style. This has put some faith back into Morrissey post-Smiths music career. Hoping the next album I get from him is as good as this or better. Highlight Song/s: "Now My Heart Is Full"

It’s beautiful album , I like it , I don’t love it , I usually say 5 but he is a prick so a 4

Can tell he’s talented but didn’t really hook me.

I hate this man. Great album.

Wasn't what I expected. I actually really enjoyed this.

Now my heart is full Billy budd The more you ignore me

Okay, there is a gap between what I have known and what I have become. Morrisey is like a mint julep on a May Day, refreshing. For years I never listened to morissey or the smiths because I saw them as a weak man’s music. I think I hated him for loving. I prescribed to the poison pen of Colorado’s war lock punchers moto, “morrisey rides a cock horse”! I repent it’s a mint julep for my lazy day at the races.

Thing about Morrisey albums is that he picks talented songwriters to take care of the music and arrangement and he only writes the lyrics so really he is the Bernie Taupin of the operation. To me it’s all about the tunes, bad lyrics can definitely drag songs down but no quality of lyric can elevate bad music. I don’t like him but I do like his albums, that’s not an endorsement of the monumental ball bag that is Stephen Morrissey but rather an objective recognition of his taste in song writing partners. 4.0

Shame that this guy is a dick, but at least he makes good tunes, I suppose. 4.5 bumped down to 4.

This album turned out to be much more to my taste than I expected. The guitar sound feels familiar, even on first listen, yet there’s something about it that quietly draws me in. Speedway stood out to me the most and has quickly become a favorite. I can’t quite explain why, but I just really like it.

Great Morrissey album, with his butterry vocals weaved in with great music and less preaching. Really listenable, and more than a few great tracks.

Hold on to your friends och speedway höjdpunkter. Landar nog i rak 4a efter andralyssning.

MEEEEEEER. Den här var dock tung, riiiiktigt tung. Borde lyssna mer på Morrissey. Tyckte knappt en låt var seg!

The first few songs were good. The latter half just sounds too much like Morrisey.

Once again i dig solo Moz more than The Smiths

Good apart from the random lawnmower

I don't tend to like a lot of Morrissey's solo work before "You are the Quarry" when he changed his style. However, "Vauxhall and I" is my favorite album from his early solo period. "The More You Ignore Me, the Closer I Get" is one of my favorites by him (solo), but I think the whole album is solid and more consistent than his earlier solo abums.

It may not have Johnny Marr but it’s quite lovely innit? Must-listen #325

The run from "Hold on to Your Friends" all the way down to "I am Hated for Loving" is pretty iconic and very pleasant listening. The two tracks after this don't really go anywhere tho, and seem to kind of go on and on.. "The Lazy Sunbathers" is very good song. The closer is at times epic and feeds pretty well into the whole dramatic vibe that he's going for but sounded a bit kinda like that Raye album. It sounded a little impassioned. Overally very solid.

I've always dismissed Morrissey as "less than" the Smiths, but after actually listening to this album I've changed my mind. Some great guitar work and melodies paired with really great lyrical lines made this album for me.

Romántico

Classic Morrissey

Not my favorite Morrissey album at first listen, this one has grown on me over the years. One thing I’ve always appreciated about Morrissey is that he seems to create his sound by choosing the right musicians and giving them the freedom to create. He could as easily have slipped into the more standard crooner style songs where the music is all but inconsequential.

Again, F Morrissey. This album was a really interesting vibe that I could for sure sink into.

Morrissey is obnoxious but this is beautiful sounding album, doesn’t force itself on you but rewards listening. No tracks stood out on first two listens, more balanced than Viva Hate.

I am a Smiths fan, and can thus allow Moz to borrow on that nostalgia as this is one of his 3 solo albums I like. Unlike his politics, as he is a prick.

I still don't really like Morrissey's voice, but this is pretty good. Enjoyed it much more than the Smiths album. Billy Budd was my favorite.

Morrissey.

I liked this one so much I downloaded it... missed it the first time around.

His eyes are so creepy

Heartbreaking: The Worst Person You Know Just Made A Great Record

Morrissey is a very strange person and his angst shows on the majority of the songs on this album. Still his music can be mood transformative and he is definitely one of a kind.

I like Morrissey, but a lot of his stuff sounds similar - similar beat, melody, depressive lyrics about homophobia and depression. This album is a little different. Singing is better, more on pitch. The last track is great, with a powerful beat.

More my jam! Less 70s rock, more 80s(?)

It's regrettable that Ive really enjoyed the Morrissey albums we've had on the list. First half was stronger than the second but there's a lot of nice chords and wry turns of phrase. Even his singing style has grown on me. But, knobhead.

why he looking at me like that. i try not to but i looked at the reviews already it's probably only low because morrissey is a bad person. but i like the smiths' style so i still like the album fav song: Hold on to Your Friends

Morrisey;-;(?)

Really cool. Like a solo talking heads. Fun bit of rock in my rom song n all.

As always, Morrissey delivers.

Liked this a lot. He has a great voice and the songs are chill, meaningful and relaxed.

I think I actually preferred the last Moz album we got (You Are The Quarry) because it had some harder rocking songs, but this is a fine album. Fav track: Hold On to Your Friends

Morissey... I kneel...

pretty good! i listened while thrifting so was really setting the mood

Morrissey perhaps at his finest, before he became a bitter, bigoted arsehole. Misses some of the musical genius of the Smiths, but good lyrically and vocally.

It was a good album, pretty mellow and easy to listen to. No stand out songs but a good vibe

loved the smiths, never really listened to morissey. this album was surprisingly good, tho i still don’t endorse his politics

Listening to “Used to be a Sweet Boy” made me think about the fact that we take sensitive twenty-somethings and insist that they live with their hearts out in the open, feeling everything as deeply as humanly possible for years, so that they can make our art for us, and then we get upset when they get warped and weird with age. Kinda bullshit.

Sick of this guy. I take this back. He’s hysterical. Don’t think hes trying to be funny but definitely trying to get a reaction. I mean come on. The more you ignore me, the lazy sunbathers - very entertaining. He’s a crooner - and I actually didn’t stop him going after the record ended. Kept going with recommended tracks. Kind of says something. I’m gonna give him four stars. Well done morrissey.

Enjoyed the listen. Everything good you expect from Morrison. His voice, lyrics, angst. Not comparable to the best Smiths records but either way a fine listen.

I don't know anything about Morrissey as person but I can tell by his lyrics that he's very odd. I heard he's vegan. I hated his music for years but now I've listened to him so much that I actually like him. Favorites were Billy Budd and Speedway. Song titles like "I Am Hated for Loving" crack me up and seems so "him".

Morrissey always reminds me of my mom cuz she liked the Smiths so much growing up so I have a soft spot for his voice. I don't always love the solo Morrissey records but I liked this one quite a bit.

This was really palatable Morrissey. Its hard for me to ever hate on Morrissey, and I definitely love certain Morrissey songs. But its often hard for me to go full send and love an entire album. I still wouldn't go that far with this one, but it did keep me interested and engaged more than others. I think its because the music behind it all is a bit more interesting. He kind of toys with some cool elements of folk and pop. With headphones in, it gets even better.

It's very good but I can't imagine myself listening to it from my own free will.

No sé si es su mejor disco (Your Arsenal, Viva Hate, You are the quarry... Years of refusal y Ringleader of the tormentors...World Peace Is None Of Your Business, Low in High Chool, I´m not a dog on a chain... parece que su mejor época ya pasó. Aquí tenemos muy buena música: El comienzo es elegante, suntuoso, parece que estamos ante una gran obra: Now My Heart Is Full, Spring-Heeled Jim, Billy Budd... pasan los minutos y no baja el nivel. La parte esencial del álbum es el trío “Hold onto your friends”, “The more you ignore me, the closer I get” y “Why don’t you find out for yourself” “I am hated for loving” suena claramente a Smiths (un poco Back to the old house o The night has open my eyes). La segunda cara es de mucho nivel. También es estupenda la lúgubre Lifeguard Sleeping, Girl Drowning. Used to Be a Sweet Boy es otra pequeña obra de orfebrería ligérsica. The Lazy Sunbathers sigue el mismo patrón, delicadeza, buena orquestación, buena melodía.

I enjoyed this probably the most of all the solo Morrissey albums so far. Having said that, as I write this he has just released a single called "Make Up Is a Lie," which sounds like the most incel shit ever.

I really wanted to love it, because nowaday everyone tries to cancel him (not that I agree with him on any point... but taking performer's opinions higher than his music is rather devalluing art as a concept itself), on the other I expected to hate it, because I hate most indie rock and jangle pop. But this turned out nice. Some fillers here, better songs has some beatlesque vibes.

Low 4 stars

Very good

yeah that’s morrisey

Enjoyed, still a wanker though

Absolutely zero wow factor and yet I still had a nice time. Miserable cunt.

Honestly a pretty good soft rock album.

Not my favorite type of music but it’s good!

Great album. This feels like very approachable rock for me and I love his voice. Will needs to listen to more Morrissey than The smiths maybe. Would return to this.

my wife said it’s a good album, tracing her finger over the tracklist, vocalizing lines from each of the songs she likes. i recognized some of the songs from her singing them to herself. i enjoy her performance better. but i’ll still give it a 4 since my wife loves it and i love my wife

This is a great Morrissey album, one of his best. Also, fuck Morrissey.

Recognizable always. I enjoyed the Smiths way back in the day-so alternative and British. I know that there is a lot of intense fury against Morrissey for various reasons. I voted here simply for the album. Sorry.

Don't like Morrissey, but I like his music.

I understand how people love Morrissey's music, even if he is a giant prick. Best Songs: Billy Budd, TMYIMTCIG, Speedway Worst Songs: I Am Hated for Loving

Unexpectedly, really enjoyed this album. Some great tracks on here. Happy to add this to my collection. 4*

I’ll admit, I typically find Morrissey borderline insufferable. The Smiths are a band I thought I would be obsessed with, and while I like several of their songs I find Johnny Marr to be the star and Morrissey is often whiny and annoying. I enjoyed this record though. Steve Lillywhite seemed to have suppressed Morrissey’s worst tendencies, and there’s a fine backing band here. Morrissey still managed to slip in Lifeguard Sleeping, Girl Drowning, which kind of sucks if I’m honest, but overall this is a solid album and easily the Morrissey solo album I’ve liked best.

4.0 Hard album for me - Morrissey (including The Smiths, has 11 albums on this project - that's a full 1% of all albums of 'all time' which is insane. One was 'redacted' (removed in a later edition but still 10 is crazy.) I absolutely love Morrissey but I don't find this his best album so how do you rate it. Struggled as I think if this was his first album (or even first solo) it would have been revolutionary (a 5) but by 1994 most of the songs sound in the same vein as other work he has done. If I ranked all the albums this isn't on the bottom quartile but probably middle - that would be a 3 but no way. I'm going 4, reserving 5's for some of the better work but. . . it would be a 5 if this was his only album and died young.

It's good, but not too goo Low 4.

I don’t think I’ve ever listened to a Morrisey solo album in full. Obviously we all know the man is an idiot but separating the man from the music I really liked this.

I appreciate it, but not entirely my thing

I enjoyed! Would listen to his other albums and more Smiths.

This record oozes sad-boy charm from start to finish. I was a grunge kid back then, but this whole vibe taps into a different kind of misunderstood energy. It's a full emotional world that feels very '90s but also completely timeless. This is the posh, poetic cousin of alt-rock. Spins: 2 Playlist Additions Hold on to Your Friends The More You Ignore Me, the Closer I Get Why Don’t You Find out for Yourself Speedway

I like Morrissey even more de-Smithed. The Vauxhall arrangements are quite varied in tempo, but that molasses voice goes with everything. ✅✅ Hold on to Your Friends ✅✅ The Lazy Sunbathers ✅✅✅ Speedway

Liked more than expected

a little slower than I like

Enjoyed. My era of sound

I tend to reach my fill of Moz after about 20 minutes, but I liked this more than I expected, particularly the first third. I only really know "The More You Ignore Me, the Closer I Get" from this album, though "Billy Budd" and "Speedway" (love the drums toward the end) stood out most on this listen. This sags for me around "I am Hated for Loving" and "Lifeguard Sleeping, Girl Drowning," but this is solid.

He may be a knob, but he does great music

Morrissey is one sad bastard. Decent record, though.

Although a pretentious bellend, he can write a decent song or two.

When I typed "Does Morrissey have mommy issues?" into Brave search the AI overview answered with a bunch of lines about Morrissey's profound connection to his mother, and I would say that he has all the markers of a man who was loved a little too deeply by his mommy... He really takes on the maternalistic martyr role with his lyrical content that is so concerned with how he is a victim for loving too much... sound like anyone you know? I think partially that's why I find it so easy to connect to his music? I similarly have a weird relationship with my mom who's biggest crime in her eyes was loving me too much... maybe I should write a bunch of songs about it.

I've listened to Your Arsenal quite a lot and love that record, but I've never listened to another Morrissey solo record in my life. This is a good one. "The More You Ignore Me," is fantastic pop music, and quintessential Morrissey. The other tracks are excellent. FOUR STARS

This is my 2nd Morrissey album on here, haven't heard this before either. I like this probably more than the last one.

I enjoyed this more than I expected. My favorites were: "Now My Heart IS Full (Remastered)," "Spring-Heeled Jim (Remastered)," "Speedway (Remastered)," and "Jack the Ripper (Live At the Theatre Royal Drury Lane)."

Smiths were better... but Morrissey's music in general shouldn't be hated just because Morrissey made it

I can't hate this. As much as I want to because of all the weird stuff Morrissey said, I really like it. He has some interesting and insightful things to say when he isn't yapping about how Chinese people are subhuman. I like that the album keeps the Jangle Pop roots of The Smiths' discography and turns it into his own thing. Unrelated fun fact: Morrissey wrote a 50-page rant about the British government in his autobiography.

I really liked this one, gave me some Jeff Buckley vibes too. Mellow songs that evolve beautifully. The guitar parts sound amazing. Favorites: ‘Now My Heart is Full’ and ‘Hold On To Your Friends’. 4/5

His fourth album. Indie Rock. Damn you Morrissey ! Your politics and ideas on some things seem crazy to me. You often come across as a rude and unpleasant bloke. However your music and lyrics just pull me in. I dislike you and love you, you fucking glorious bastard !

Pre-listen whining: I’m so sick of it dude. Unfortunately I did really like the last Morrissey album I got, so maybe I’ll have to justify enjoying this one too. Post-listen whining: alas, I liked this as much as ‘Your Arsenal’ and must rate accordingly. You win another round, Morrissey, you bastard. The production is great and his writing and melodies are razor sharp. Hate the album cover though. Don’t look at me like that. That’s a face that makes me leave the bar if I see it coming my way.

Hold on to Your Friends har en jævlig deilig progressjon. The More You Ignore Me kunne lett vært en Smiths låt, hadde passet rett inn på Strangeways.

I hate that I love it.

My first response was not morrisey again, but this was one of his better ones

Never heard this one before. Arrangements are still reminiscent of the smiths but different enough that this is a new experience. Very cool I really liked it

Really feels like the 90s. Not my jam but I get why people like it. Also, we get it, you find his politics repulsive. Can't fucking stop from saying it can you?

Just some nice classy Morrissey.

Mycket mycket bra.

Classic Morrissey, sometimes almost a parody of himself.. but so good.

This is something of a watershed for Morrissey's solo stuff, as he finds his slower tempo crooner sweet-spot. It's his best since Viva Hate, and feels like it combines the best elements of his solo work. I reserve most praise for the epic 'Spring Heeled Jim' which has always been a favourite and feels grandly cinematic in arrangement and delivery. I still think the peak of his solo career is You Are the Quarry, but this, and Viva Hate, are not too far behind. I can't reasonably rate this alongside those nor his best Smiths work, which is why I plump for the highest of excellent 4s.

My guy🥰 great album

The rare Morrissey that makes me not long for Johnny Marr. A great collection of songs that features more wisdom than whine. A consistent as anything in his solo collection. Peters out a bit on side two. Highly listenable.

I sometimes think about the best album for someone to listen to if he/she is looking to hear Morrissey's solo music. I still think a greatest hits album seems like the best avenue but between this one or Bona Drag. Both are fantastic in my opinion, but I think I lean towards Bona Drag. I think Morrissey's lyrics cut deeper on that one. This isn't a "light rock" version of Morrissey's albums but the songs here do tend to be some of his less rocking. Starting off with Now My Heart is Full allows listeners to know this is a different kind of Morrissey record and even though I won't write home about the brilliance of Spring-Heeled Jim and this album does not contain a diss track about his hairdresser, it's a worthy addition to this book. Now My Heart is Full Hold on to Your Friends The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get Why Don't You Find Out for Yourself I Am Hated for Loving Used to be a Sweet Boy Speedway

I liked this! — I was not very familiar with either Morrissey, or The Smiths, but I was immediately comfortable with the first few tracks of the album. Other reviewers call these songs “samey” — indie agony rock — but I enjoyed them. About halfway through, I was genuinely surprised by the dark and melancholy turn that things took, especially with the haunting instrumentation of “Lifeguard Sleeping, Girl Drowning,” which has a clarinet tracing through the song. Then I was truly hooked, and by the time the album ended with a bang after “In my own sick way, I’ve always been true to you” — it had me.

This album is a little more welcoming and ear-tasteful than other stuff I have heard from Morrissey. Maybe a little more the smiths. than his solo stuff. Pretty good so far. Yeah, this is a good album.

It's good, but not great... I like the vibe and of course the voice, need to listen to more Morrissey...

Look as much as I consider Morrisey a pretentious douche, I mustn’t lie his almost concerning level of narcissism is well founded. The man can write a good song, this album as that intro may lead you to believe was a good time. Everything here was enjoyable at some level, multiple times rising up to be really good, I loved the closer “Speedway”, I also loved “Now My Heart Is Full”, “Hold On To Your Friends”, and “Used To Be A Sweet Boy” among others. The production is far less heavy handed than many mid 90s records and his voice sounds really good throughout.

Morrissey’s solo work can be hit or miss, but I think this is one of his better albums. While it still features those signature jangly guitars, the overall tone is much different from his work with The Smiths. Here, the sound is more mature, lush, and refined, which pairs perfectly with his melancholic vocal delivery.

Herlig album. Igjen leverer Morrissey varene. Meget sterk firer.

Morrissey at his most self-absorbed. Can't say that I don't thoroughly enjoy it.

nothing to say

Oh Morrissey you mad lad with a delicious voice. Really liked this. Some of his best work outside of the Smiths. Simpsons: Yes PS. Publishing your autobiography as a Penguin Classic is badass.

Morrissey may be a cunt but he writes a good tune.

4 Stars (11/15)

Better than I expected. More upbeat than a lot of his material I have heard before. Pleasantly surprised.

Very nice. Would buy

I thought I wouldn't enjoy Morrissey without Johnny Marr, wasn't really looking forward to it, but I got to say I thought the record was great, plenty of great moments, definitely worth another listen

It's a very warm and melodic album, which is sometimes nice, but it's nothing really special. It's just a nice collection of songs, but there is nothing in the album that really stands out.

This is Morrissey on his way. Interesting to watch the steps on the way to his own sound that he seemed to find on his later recordings.

Listened to other music by Morrissey with The Smiths. Enjoyed listening to this one as well!

Never listened to Morrisey before. I really like his style. His voice is a nice mid-range and smooth and over the musical arrangements the whole production sounds nice, with a harder rock edge on occasion. The lyrics were nice and cynical and gloomy, often a scathing review of humanity (see Lifeguard... and Lazy Sunbathers). I'm all about that, and those songs were my favorite on the album. Standouts were "Now My Heart Is Full," "Billy Budd" - featuring some dope wah guitar - "Lifeguard Sleeping, Girl Drowning" - freaking poetry I really liked this album. It took the "singer/songwriter" genre to another level for me. The guitar work was very good. Despite being pretty rocky, the songs do sound a tad samey and sleepy after a bit, but this didn't bother me too much. There are a lot of good jams here. Easy 4 stars.

I think I'd like it if Morrissey could release an objectively bad album please, because it's painful to have to hear something as good as this and equate it with Old Steve. As it is, this is, yet again, excellent, starting with the exceptional Now My Heart Is Full. A confusing feeling.

Probably his best solo album

No denying it, I really like some of his solo stuff.

I kinda wish this whole challenge hadn't turned me into a Morrissey fan, since he's a prick.

I really like this record. Too bad Morrissey just seems to be an angry, hateful old man nowadays.

Not full of out-and-out hits, but pleasing to listen to. Lots of lullaby-eque songs.

Surprisingly Ok given I can't usually stand Morrissey

Now my heart is full, Spring heeled Jim, and Billy Budd is about as good an opening trio of songs as you can get. One of the two classic Morrissey albums.

Not bad. Nice and mellow. Reminds me of Chris Rea.

Banger

A lot of pleasant songs

There has been no greater victim that Steven Morrissey knows of than Steven Morrissey. Having said that, he really has an ear for music, and his stuff generally ranges from no worse than ok, right up to gorgeous. This album is good, there is no denying it - put aside the personal qualities of the artist and just listen to som really good tunes.

Enjoyed more than I thought I would… a little bit one note from time to time but otherwise really nice music.

buen pub, mejor machista

This album feels very personal and self pitying even for Morrissey. Liked the first couple of songs but he really goes on autopilot in the middle. Not bad but just seems like the stuff he writes in his sleep. Speedway, however, is fantastic and a strong way to close out. That gets this to a light 4.

I enjoyed this one. Good sound and not so depressing. Not a lot of recognizable tracks for me.

Vasst album av Morrissey.

Mature and balanced, moody and evocative, this is a generational figure aging quite gracefully, with "dreamy melancholy" (editors get this one right), understated playing and beautifully controlled melancholy in the vocals. "Now My Heart is Full," "Hated for Loving," "Used to be a Sweet Boy" and "Lazy Sunbathers" are all quite compelling indeed, offering moments of real beauty and poignance. But really every cut works well. The melodrama the right mix of sincerity, humor and irony about it, leading to a net-effect of musical wisdom, rather then the posturing or provoking (for posturing and provoking's sake) that M was too often given to in the past. Yes, let's call it his best solo work,no small feat, that.

Pretentious, unfortunately talented, twat.

Begrudgingly liked this a lot more than I thought I would

Some really good bits, some brave decisions. The 2nd half is stronger than the 1st. It's not as good as any Smiths album, but not much is. The sound effects and clarinet are pleasant surprises.

Pretty good. Pretty standard Morrissey stuff, once again, shame he's a dick.

Standard Morrissey. It's good.

Morrissey, j'avais écouté Viva Hate et Years of refusal, pis j'aimais pas ça.

People may not like the guy but he makes good music, this album being proof of that.

By 1994, Morrissey had become a bit of a punching bag. His brandishing of the Union Jack and incendiary song titles like The National Front Disco had him pegged by the music media as a racist nationalist. Yet Moz always had a trick up his sleeve to make those concerned Cathys come around his corner again. Vauxhall & I is Morrissey at his most explicitly vulnerable, keeping his heart on his sleeve while remaining subtle enough to let those who think they know know more. From Now My Heart is Full onward, the listener is taken upon a wave that would not only remind them of Morrissey's greatness but become convinced that there would be more to come from this side of the usually thorny wordsmith. Favorites: Now My Heart is Full, Spring-Heeled Jim, Billy Budd, The More You Ignore Me, the Closer I Get, I Am Hated for Loving, Lifeguard Sleeping, Girl Drowning, The Lazy Sunbathers.

So whiny, so good

Thoughts before listening: Dude has turned into a punchline, but at one point he made some pretty good music. I definitely enjoy the Smiths, and I know that this is a well respected album. Not sure if I've heard it or not? Review: Well this definitely sounds like a Morrissey album, and a good one at that. I think of Morrissey albums mainly being about his crooning and lyrics, but I am really enjoying the music on this album as well. Really nice guitar work throughout. I'll be adding a few of these songs to my playlist. 4-stars

Sure, I'll get sad with you Morrissey. Just don't say any words. I will say, this album holds up surprisingly well. The production is top notch, and the songs are clever, albeit a bit slow once you get into the second half.

Lillywhite's pristine production provides the perfect polish for one of Morrissey's most mellow and measured collection of solo songs.

Easy breezy sitting out on the patio on a Saturday afternoon kind of music. Dig it...

Like it

Mellow, smooth, enjoyable!

Moany voice but good!

Quintessentially English. Mozzerian vulnerability at its finest!!

naturally adored the homoerotically ambiguous opening track (a theme thats revisited more explicitly on 'billy budd,' 'i am hated for loving,' and 'speedway', also alluded to in the album title). caustic wit shines through despite a tendency towards sensationalist melodrama. lyrically, a psychoanalyst's wet dream, and i do appreciate the genuine vulnerability on display. inevitably does descend into self-aggrandizement (its morrissey after all). 'lifeguard sleeping, girl drowning' is a definite lowlight. given the weight of positive associations rooted in past listening, its difficult to evaluate morrissey's vocals under any pretense of objectivity; can't help but dogmatically heap praise. without the anchor of johnny marr's banging riffs, the compositions do sometimes slide into musical theatre—not the good kind (if "good musical theatre" is even a tenable concept). ultimately, enough elite songwriting to more than compensate. sidenote: very much relate to morrissey once releasing a statement saying: "unfortunately, i am not homosexual."

The more you ignore me, the closer I get too crecked. Stripped back instrumentals on vocally/lyrically emphasized albums always come less naturally to me.

At first I wasn't too sure about Morrissey. I had heard of him, and heard a little bit of his music, both solo and with The Smiths, and I didn't think I was really into it. But after listening to this album and really giving it a chance, I've decided that I am a fan after all. The way the lyrics often don't match the tone of the music is really interesting and the production values and musicianship on display is really nice. Four stars.

The last solid Morrissey album, thanks in large part to producer Steve Lillywhite

Pretty good. I like the smiths so this was enjoyable too.

Day 0020/1001 of One Album a Day / Listened to whilst: commuting Favourite tracks: hold on to your friends, the more you ignore me the closer I get Worst tracks: lifeguard sleeping, girl drowning

Hyvää ysäri brittirokkia, miellyttäviä kappaleita. Parhaat: Hold On To Your Friends, Lifeguard Sleeping, Girl Drowing, The Lazy Sunbathers

We all know Morrissey and we all know what we think of him. Fine, let's move on. What I want to know is, why does he always seem so very sad? I imagine it's quite a polarising opinion, but I actually love his voice. Distinct, soft, airy and pleasant. Good instrumentation and he taps into that melancholic energy. There are some really great tracks to be found here, The opener and closer of the album are probably the strongest two. Enjoyed this a lot and would happily stick this on at any time.

Better than I expected

Great voice and mellow songs. I just sab ack and enjoyed. I haven't listened to Morrissey before but I probably will in the future. Great album!

The first half had me wondering if something was wrong, because I really wasn't that impressed by it. The second half definitely kills though. Wow is it good. I'm more of a "Your Aresenal" type of Morrissey fan, but this was very enjoyable

3,5 ster.

Entertaining and somewhat mesmerizing

Excellent stuff. Prick of a man but that was a very good album

I hate that I kinda like Morrissey.

Like all Morrissey albums there's 4 or 5 tracks that I absolutely love. The slower mopey stuff I can do without, but The More You Ignore Me and Speedway and a few others elevate this to greatness.

This album was better than initially expected. Leaving aside all logical reservations about Morrissey himself, and his racist views (which is a lot to ask, I know) and if we stop comparing his solo career with that of The Smiths, “Vauxhall and I” is a very enjoyable album. Build around literary (Melville, Dickens) and a bunch of steady veiled queer references, this album builds a coherent journey. If Luis Cernuda had been a rock star this would have possibly his album. Although not all songs are great (the projects starts fizzling out by the second half of the record (with a serious of slow-paced ballads that do not hit the mark fully), the start and the conclusion are solid and coherent with the overall theme surrounding his fictionalized queer experience: filled with solidarity, friendships, rejection, desire (symbolized by the sun that covers the sunbathers), and the consolidation of identity. It’s noticeable the reverse influence of Brit pop at times (Oasis) but also The Cure, but absorbed by the singer in a totally personal way. Morrissey’s clever lyricism is still top notch. And while the pace is questionable, as the second half drags, the album closes on a high note with the tense drums of “Speedway”. My overall consideration 8/10

I love the Smiths. But before I loved the Smiths, I loved Morrissey's solo records. Call me weird. Vauxhall and I is considered by many to be among the best of Morrissey's solo albums. And it's hard to argue against that. The songs are uniformly strong from start to finish. Now my Heart is Full is a wonderful melodramatic opener. Side A also has the barnburner, Billy Budd, the anthemic Hold On to Your Friends, and one of Morrissey's best-known and poppiest tracks: The More You Ignore Me, the Closer I Get. It's so poppy, in fact, that you might miss that it's written from the very creepy perspective of a stalker. The second side is also above average. The whole album comes off as perhaps Morrissey's most complete statement as a solo artist. And it's the first of Morrisey's more "mature" albums. The whole thing is really, really good.

Wow, echte Überraschung.

I went into this one expecting to like it just because I’m a fan of The Smiths, but it surprised me by standing on its own. Morrissey sounds more reflective here, less snarky and more... human? The songwriting feels personal and mature, and the melodies stick with you. It’s got that melancholic charm without being too dreary, and the production is sharp without trying too hard. Definitely one of his better solo efforts. Even if you're not big on Morrissey outside The Smiths, this one’s worth a listen.

It’s too bad that Steven Morrissey is such a garbage human, because this is a really good album. Moody and atmospheric but still checks all the usual Morrissey boxes.

Love the British edge, not super spectacular though

Fuck Morrissey. It's not for loving that you're hated, mate. That said, magnificent album, damn it. 4 stars.

Gagged this is the man from the Smiths.. lol but wow I really enjoyed and he has a fantastic voice truly

As always, Morrissey provides heaps of quality and enjoyment for the listener. Haven't heard a bad album from his discography yet. Very solid record.

Urgh, Morrissey is a fucking twat, but this is a hell of an album, it cannot be denied.

Poetic, lyrical wit and pure Morrissey before the crash.

I don't usually like Morrissey, but this was pretty good!

I love Morrissey.

Sad indictment of today’s music that Morrissey would stand no chance today. Jangle guitars. Biting intellectual lyrics. And essentially a crooner to boot. This album is a slow burn as opposed to incendiary.

I still don't like the person, but he knows exactly how to do music that I enjoy! Damm!

Still getting a bit of David Bowie in the vocals but enjoyed the album far more than the recent Iggy Pop album. Enjoyed the sound though have a difficult time imagining the setting this is appropriate for

Great moment from Mozza.

I listened to Meat is Murder a while back and thought it was fine. Going into this album I was certain I wasn't going to like it but I was wrong. I ended up really enjoying it. A main problem is mine for Meat is Murder was Morrissey's singing but in this album it clicked for me. Not only that but the musicians were also really good. All in all, I'm shocked that this album was as good as it was. A 4/5 for me. He does seem like an ass though.

Blah blah, Morrissey bad, music good, blah blah... mentioning it every single review is redundant, so no need to harp on it here. Morrissey shows on this album that he recognizes the second British Invasion he helped spawn and takes beats from Pulp among other similar acts to create a very consistent record, with that usual whispery, lackadaisical crooning Morrissey oh so loves, with a dash of relatively generic instrumentation to create a record that is good, but never great. It has those driving, alternative riffs and that thumping percussion to keep things moving, but he knows you are here to love or loathe him and his voice, so he is mainly the star of the show. If you want an album that is definitely aging, but still has enough to come back to, then I think the melancholic tone fits best here since his departure from the Smiths, but I find myself preferring Viva Hate because it sounds fresh and like he's roaring to make his own music. This album feels like he has been there, done that, and knows how to make you happy in the cockiest of ways, and I have to admit this is still got enough good parts to win me over.

Didn't pull me in the same way that Your Arsenal did, but the voice is the same one that I really enjoyed in that. Solid 4 this time.

Good, but it makes me just want to listen to the smiths. 3.5 but I’m rounding up

Great album

Got the album, Morrissey 🙌🫶 7+

7/10 the more I listen to Morrisey’s solo stuff, the less I think he was the mastermind behind The Smiths I know Johnny Marr co-wrote a lot of the songs, I’ll dig into his discography sometime and see if it’s better than Morrisey’s solo stuff because this is kinda looking like a Seinfeld situation where the frontman (Jerry Seinfeld)’s solo stuff isn’t nearly as good, but then you look at the other guy (Larry David)’s other stuff (Curb Your Enthusiasm), and it’s just as high caliber if not more, and you realize he did like all the work and is the only reason it’s actually good idk, I guess I’ll find out when I listen to his stuff

Well, there are few things that I tend to feel less excited about than getting a Morrissey album on this list. However, much like how I felt about Your Arsenal, I found myself enjoying this quite a bit. He has a nice voice, the music is great. As long as he doesn't get too maudlin with the lyrics, I can actually kick back and enjoy a Morrissey album. Who knew? 4/5

Great music with a good flow. Good to listen to on the side.

Pleasantly surprised. Very poppy but very good

Very good voice but often clashing with the music behind it which doesn't always complement the voice.

I'd been impressed by this one when it came out, but haven't listened to it in years... I won't be neglecting it now - there are some great tracks here, although it dips a little in the second half. It's not quite a 5, but a high 4.

a morrissey album, similar sound to previous stuff i've listened to both on this list and before i even started. this album is a lot slower, moodier, and softer than his earlier tracks. still though it's much of the same! lots of lesser known songs here and there.

This is a good album but why does he have 4

Chilled

solid album. good mix of upbeat and subdued songs, all punctuated with morrissey’s trademark crooning. highlights: “now my heart is full” “billy budd” “i am hated for loving”

It's not the Smiths, but it's good enough. Morrissey is such an unpleasant man, with horrible politics and beliefs, but he is so good at being relatable on records.

Always been more of Smiths fan that a Moz. But I really do like this one! I think more than Your Arsenal. Especially The More You Ignore Me… catchy song. 4/5

i hated on morrissey and the smiths for ages thinking I didn't like them but I actually do

It started out very strong but in the end the songs where too whimsy. But I’m a big Morrissey fan so it still gets 4 stars.

Despicable human with an amazing talent. Gorgeous album.

Nice album, sounds similar to The Smiths - guess Morrissey simply was such an important person of the band.

Lot of woke-ish people here that are dissing his supposedly "bad" political views. He is what he is. Deal with it :) And this album, a solid 4.

3/21/24. For some reason I felt this album to be uplifting in spots, but also a lot of fun! Morrissey's voice shines here, and the song structures and sounds keep it interesting throughout.

Mum always used to love The Smiths and Morrissey - used to enjoy it all in the car. Am aware of his reputation haha. Quite enjoy the vibes though, will likely add this to my library as it reminds me of being a kid in the car.

I don't like Morrissey the person, but can't deny I really enjoyed this album

Goddamnit I like Morrissey, I tried not to but I do. Much less melodramatic than Viva Hate. Such great melodies 8.3/10

I prefer the Smiths, but can’t deny Morrissey’s songwriting.

after listening to three of the smiths albums, i'm left longing for johnny marr's presence on vauxhall and i. somehow, morrissey was able to rein his obnoxious self in, which i wasn't sure was possible without marr, but i digress. morrissey has a great voice despite being an asshole, and i'm upset how much i enjoy this album. his musicians created music that is so smooth and easy to listen to. before i knew it, i listened to this album multiple times and saw no signs of stopping. the irony, of course, is morrissey writing lyrics to a song called "hold on to your friends."

Admittedly, Morrissey’s reputation had probably kept me from listening to more of his music, but I really enjoyed this album. Straddles the line of melancholy and poppy.

Enjoyed most of this surprisingly

Pretty good. I don't really listen to the lyrics much but the snippets I caught sounded like classic Morrissey complaining that us regular folk don't do enough to improve the world. But whatever I'm into his sound

Decent Morrissey is better than good "other band" much of the time. I didn't know this album, but enjoyed it. 3.75/5

Nice. Well done.
