So, so good

good listen.... very moody

pretty good. I like him solo rather than his prior group work.

Solid but not outstanding. The smiths are better

A surprisingly pleasant album.

I wanted to hate this album, but it's actually pretty good. Damn it. Catchy melodies and clever lyrics without leaning too much toward Morrissey's more obnoxious and pretentious tendencies. "The More You Ignore Me, the Closer I Get" (which is apparently about his legal feud with former band mate Mike Joyce and not about a stalker) kind of sounds like an Oasis song. Some of the other songs sound like a less saccharine Robbie Williams. "Hold On To Your Friends" sounds like something Morrissey sings to himself in the mirror—he should listen to that guy. Other stand-out tracks: "I am Hated for Loving," "Lazy Sunbathers," "Speedway" Mozz is an insufferable person, but sometimes he makes good music. 4/5 stars

Good tunes. Nonsense lyrics

Before he was known to be a nutter, Morrissey was fun to listen to

Pero que maravilla es esta!? He adorado cada segundo de este álbum Now My Heart Is Full y The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get es✨✨✨✨✨ 8/10

Favorite Tracks: The More You Ignore Me, the Closer I Get Why Don’t You Find out for Yourself Now My Heart Is Full

I never really listened to Morrissey before this, I really enjoyed this album.

J'ai l'impression qu'on me force à dire du bien de lui

le gars est juste incapable de sortir un mauvais album cest insupportable

Oh well... I like this, it's depressive, it's sad - just like a teenage me. I was 16 when this was published, I really don't know why I didn't listen to The Smiths and Morrissey back then.

Well it’s not the Smiths but it’ll do. Fuck Morrissey.

Love The Smiths and Morrissey solo still scratches that itch

Yes, I know he is a reprehensible shit. The Smiths are one of my all time faves though. Gave this a couple of listens and it definitely grew on me second time around. Not the same without Marr though

This was my first time listening to a Morrissey solo album, and I hate to admit that I enjoyed it. I like Morrissey's vocals (I've listened to two Smiths albums), and I thought the lyrics on this album were really deep and personal. I don't know if Morrissey has ever explicitly stated what the lyrics to these songs mean, but I have a hunch that they're mostly about struggling with the social ramifications of being non-heterosexual. The musical arrangements were really good too. This album didn't blow me away, but I thought it was well made, and I enjoyed listening to it.

Was not a fan of this type of music in the '90s when it came out and I was a teenager. My taste in the music is involved I enjoyed this a lot.

Mostly excellent

This is a strong album. Anything after the Smiths will be viewed as lesser, but this might be Morrissey’s best solo record. It is of course sad and full of self loathing but the music and singing are great. The first half is stronger, but the album as a whole holds together well.

Love Morrissey.

Never really listened to Morrissey or The Smiths before much, but I really enjoyed this album. Favourite tracks: Spring-Heeled Jim, Billy Budd, Hold onto your Friends.

I've always liked Morrisey. Unique and dreamy, kind like Lo-Fi back in the day.

Pretty good. I generally don’t like Morrissey’s stuff.

More emotionally vulnerable than the other Morrissey albums we’ve had. Dialing down the preachiness makes this a much easier listen. Really nothing to hate here.

I liked the first half of the album, the second part gets boring. It's a strong 3 or a weak 4. I think there's some magic in his voice. 3.5/5

Morrissey has such an amazing turn of phrase - not twee, not obvious, but beautiful. And the music is so delicate at times. I would have said that like Vincent Van Gough his works would be appreciated more years after his death. Alas his views on politics may have put pay to that. I think he was spot on about Sinead O’Conner though.

Another fourth studio release. I'm getting the sense that the authors of this list just said, "let's find all the people who released four albums or more" and put them on this list. Morrissey is a great addition, though.

Pretty decent from Morrissey. Definitely feels like The Smiths brought into the 90s with maybe a bit less humor and jangle. Overall the album features really good songwriting, specifically in the second half with some heavy hitters. 7/10

Riktigt bra poplåtar.

Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Now my heart is full, Hold on to your friends, I am hatred for loving

Excellent

So I shockingly had to look up the morrissey hate and he does sound like a massive tool, bit frustratingly this album is very good (albeit sober AF)

It sucks that Morrissey sucks, because his music doesn’t suck.

Had me at “The More You Ignore Me, the Closer I Get.” Love me some Morrisey!

I can have a little bit of morose Morrissey, as a treat. 7/10

I wasn't happy about another Morrissey album being thrust upon me. Like how many is this now? Maybe 5 or 6 including The Smiths albums? We've only had 2 Beatles albums for heaven's sake. I still listened and I'm really glad I did. This was by far my favourite Morrissey experience. I enjoyed his understated vocals and the overall pace and tone of the record. Still, I'm finding it hard to believe that I'll give this one a 4.... What have I become?

Nu bent pora dainu uzkabino. Tai jau yra vau. Reiks daugiau paklausyt. Ig cia dabar bus mano simtadienio dainom

good 8/10

You know, for all of Morrissey's foolishness, I still like a lot of his music. It's really clever pop music with strikingly eloquent lyrics. You have to be in the mood for this type of stuff, but Vauxhall and I is a really good album. Lovely arrangements and strong as ever vocals from Morrissey. It's less memorable than some of his other albums, but really engaging overall. Morrissey has this way of connecting with you on a really personal level as a listener, in a way most artists can't. Fave Songs: The More You Ignore Me, the Closer I Get, I Am Hated for Loving, Why Don't You Find Out for Yourself, Now My Heart Is Full, Hold On to Your Friends,

Charmant. Belle voix, belles mélodies. Now my heart is full, why don't you find out for yourself.

No question that he's an self-regarding arsehole of the very highest order, but I have to say that I really enjoyed listening to this & I'm fairly certain it'll grow on me after a few more plays.

He's a bit of a dodgy dude but he can write a tune

I only recognizes one song but enjoyed the whole album.

This was better than I expected. I really like the Smiths but always felt like the strong point of the band was Johnny Marr and that Morrissey was a little bit overrated. I was wrong, a lot of songs here are beautiful, especially "Hold on to Your Friends". Look I hate this racist prick as much as the next guy, but this was fine. 7,6/10

I… think I like Morrissey.

With the Queen is dead I said that less vocals and more cool production would’ve made it better and I think this album finally found the right balance between the two. It could also be that I’ve just grown warmer to the smiths/morrissey but I liked this one quite a bit. The first track had solid instrumentals and the rest of the album stayed right around that level. Side note: when I was looking for my Queen is dead review I saw my siouxsie reviews and realized that I had given one album a two then the next one a 4 and said I’d never heard of them lol.

Really like this. Will buy the album.

Bra men ikke Smiths så..

Almost definitely his best solo album. Bro might be a disaster of a human being, but at least he made some good music back in the day.

Morrissey albums have such nostalgia to them because I listened to them a lot in my early teens.

It's pretty good if you separate the art from the artist

Veldig bra! 4,49

Maybe the closest to sounding like The Smiths of any of his solo records. He seems in his element on this record, like he's gained enough confidence as a solo artist to craft a solid set of songs. Some great selections on this one and he hasn't lost is wit and wordplay.

Call me emo but this whole record fucking slaps. Now My Heart Is Full is one of a very few songs that can give me a lump in my throat. The production on the solo Morrissey albums outshines anything he recorded with The Smiths too.

Frantically trying to ignore M's dodgy political stance and pronouncements to concentrate on the (very good) lyrics and music. Where did he go wrong?

Prefs : Now My Heart Is Full, Billy Budd, Hold on to Your Friends, Why Don't You Find Out For Yourself, Lifeguard Sleeping, Girl Drowning, The Lazy Sunbathers, Speedway Moins pref: I Am Hated for Loving

Stupendous! I spent my college years with a housemate whose every item of clothing was a tribute to Morrissey, every record was connected to Morrissey, and said housemate even had Mozza’s quiff. Luckily, I was a fan too, although not so mega. I have a special place in my heart for Viva Hate but Mozza’s style is distinctive and emotionally wrought and never lets you down. Those lyrics are sheer poetry. I am now A central part Of your mind's landscape Whether you care Or do not Yeah, I've made up your mind Yup - indeed - my mind is made up.

Stand-outs: "Now My Heart Is Full," "Lifeguard Sleeping, Girl Drowning," "Speedway"

favourite song: speedway struggling to pick a least favourite song so I'm not going. this isn't typically the sort of music id enjoy but my girlfriend broke up with me 3 days ago and this album is really hitting a spot

Morrissey never disappoints. He always delivers music that is versatile yet never lacks his own signature touch. Yet another good album with a perfect runtime

One of his best solo albums. There's a rare fragility to his voice that really carries this project forward Anyway the Queen died while I was listening to this so that's a bit mad

Moz is at his croony best. Every song feels like a desperate attempt to redeem something the poor bastard is longing for. It’s missing that Johnny Mar touch he had with The Smiths.

Art 8/10.....Artist 0/10

Mature and balanced, a very good record and by aiming for more understatement than in previous efforts, Morissey wins bigger. The controlled melancholy works beautifully. This is how pop stars can/should age gracefully.

Kicking off with Now My Heart is Full, instantly nostalgic and remembering a time when it was OK to like Morrissey, because he wasn't obviously a terrible cunt at this point. Also, remembering that Morrissey really did used to be terribly good. Hold on To Your Friends, words to live by as you get older and it gets harder. Lifeguard Sleeping is great too, really unique on the record. This is a terrific album, and easily his best solo effort, for me.

Great album, too bad it had to be Morrissey the person. I will never stop laughing when I see Morrissey wearing his own swag.

Oh no. Alright, let's see if I have a new take on this cat. Going into it, my bias is strong. I always found Morrissey impossibly whiny, verbose, and just plain unlikeable. Not the guy I'd like to get stuck talking to at a party. And god damn... another revelation. This album is pretty damned good. Morrissey is nowhere near the insufferable git I remember from The Smiths. I'm hearing a quirky crooner with a bit of an attitude and a penchant for the creepy, which I have to admire. The songs are fairly straightforward on the surface, which is just fine, as it lays the foundation for some cool textures and arrangements that are well done and interesting. And Morrissey uses his voice to great effect, with his melodies sometimes going in odd but familiar directions and his lyrics painted just outside the lines of what most any other writer might arrive at. I'm teetering on a 4, but thinking it's a 3.5. The fact that I'm considering a 4-star review for a Morrissey album is the most surprising thing about this endeavor to date. Couple that with McCormick going low on Marvin Gaye and Marianne buying Limp Bizkit merch and we're about to open a portal to the Upside Down. It's freakin' apocalyptical.

I never really cottoned to The Smiths, and I know just enough about Moz's current political views that I had to hold myself back from groaning as I queued this up. But once again I was surprised. I dug this record, pure and simple. Great production, some killer guitar work, catchy melodies, and the dude knows how to write lyrics. At the risk of being canceled for liking this, I will definitely dive into more of his solo work.

What a charming young album!!

I find myself going through periods of loving Morrisey, and loathing in equal measure. Generally means that depending on which day I'd give this a 2 or a 4 star review. Today is a 4 star day.

The best of Morrissey is being moody and lovely. This is both.

I was not excited to have a Morrissey album to listen to. While I haven’t a lot of experience with his music, I have found him a bit downbeat and dreary in the past. So I had a little apprehension about the next 40 minutes. I needn't have worried... I found this album really enjoyable! Catchy, upbeat tunes that grew on me even more on subsequent listens. What a lovely surprise!

An excellent Morrissey album that I imagine will improve with each listen. 4 🌟

It's funny how polarising Morrissey is when looking at the reviews. It's been almost 8 months since I listened to You Are The Quarry and I'm not sure where this fits into the zeitgeist. Anyway, it feels a bit middle of the road, has a few highlights and is a bit slow at times. But I also feel it's worth a little more explorations so keeping it a 4. Fave: Now My Heart Is Full

It's good, it's a more polished pop version of the Smiths. It's perhaps his best album. 3.5 for me but I round up.

On one hand, this is a Morrissey album with songs that just sound like most Morrissey albums. On the other, I really like Morrissey albums.

I must have missed this album rating it. I know I listened to it, but I went ahead and listened again. It's still good.

Had to check but apparently rated Your Arsenal with 3 stars and wondered why that Morrissey album was on the list. I knew Vauxhall and I is a better album but had not listened to it for at least a decade or so and forgot how much better it is. It contains exactly quite a number of 5-star classic Morrissey songs and I liked it a lot (4 stars, but at the high end so 8/10).

Great album

Siri unique voice and sound on this album.

Well...I don't like his politics but fuck, if this album doesn't deserve to be on here I don't know what does. Despite being an unrepentant narcissist and all-around absurd person, Morrissey is an incredible musician. Not only do I get the appeal, it's kind of my thing. It's the mopey teenager in me. Why are so many famous people such weirdos? Probably because you have to be bizarre to actually want all of the trappings of fame. There's really not a skip on here for me. That said, still prefer his work with the Smiths. Fave track: Now my Heart is Full or Moon River. Got a good laugh out of him saying "I wrote that" at the end of the latter too. Haha

I don't know, I got into this one. I'm listening to "Speedway" again right now, matter of fact. Maybe there's hope for me as a potential Smiths fan yet?? Or does me liking this one mean the opposite? I'm really confused here.

The perfect definition of a solid four star album.

Actually enjoyed this a lot, shame he’s a cunt

Tricky to listen to now. 0 out of 5 for the person. 4 out of 5 for the songs

Albums Decent. Morrissey has a song here called I am hated for loving, That shit didn't age all that well too well, which is fucking hilarious. Dudes the worst. Fuck Morrissey.

Pretty good. Makes good background music. Would listen again

I'm a Smiths / Morrissey fan but this album. So ehow escaped my orbit. There are some absolutely gorgeous so gs on this album. As usual his band is spot on...they sound amazing the rockers like Billy Budd; ROCK! The more subtle songs like the beautiful I am Hated For Loving and Lifeguard Sleeping, Girl Drowning are arranged with beautiful tasteful touches. The album is lovely from beginning g to end. Highly recommended. 4 🌟

Dude's a d-bag to the nth degree, but hell if he can't make pretty music with a great voice.

I probably need a few more spins to process and make sure I truly love the album, and it isn't just Moz trying to seduce me with those baby blues on the album cover. So far, Morrissey's solo work lives solidly right there in the 4 area for me. Which, hey, is nothing to crow about. I can't help but wonder if all that's keeping him from classic status is either the willingness to eat meat or enjoy having sex. No one needs a good lay as badly as Morrissey does.

Saved Prior: None Off Rip: Now My Heart Is Full; Spring-Heeled Jim; Hold on to Your Friends; The More You Ignore Me, the Closer I Get; Lifeguard Sleeping, Girl Drowning; Speedway Cutting Edge: None Overall Notes: Oh how I wanted to hate and I still think that Johnny Marr would've greatly improved this but mannnn his voice sounds really good on this. Worst person you know went solo and made a pretty good album. Might have to go back and reassess my 3 and two 4s to the three Smiths albums because it slots in at 4th behind them but not by as much as I had expected (and hoped lolz).

Moral Sea

Vauxhall and I- Morrissy (1994): 7/10 Right off the bat I am impressed with the sound. The epic guitar and drums intertwined with Morrissys vocals is really captivating. We are off to a great start. Next, we have a mellower track that really showcases Morrissys cryptic writing style, with an intriguing use of what seems to be… Radio chatter? In the background. Once again, I am impressed by the guitar on the next track. “Hold onto your friends“ has officially converted me to this style of production, plus I’m digging the message lyrically. The next track starts out on a riff that’s borderline iconic. This stadium filling sound is really something. An upbeat haunting acoustic tune comes next, and I’m not complaining about this one. “The lazy sunbathers“ has a great message about complacency during difficult times. Album finishes epically with “speedway”.

Geweldige stem vind ik dit. Liesjes op zich niet zo spannend maar die stem is echt erg prettig om naar te luisteren.

Surprising a d almost funny. Take a Smiths album master tape, go to the mixing desk and slide every channel containing Johnny Marr's guitar parts down to zero. What you will be left with is this album. It's good, but it would have been so much better with him.

Not bad

Great indie

moody, check, yodely outburst, check, it's Morrisey.

I hate Morrissey but pretty good album

Sounds a lot like Morrissey, which is okay.

Why don't you find out for yourself is a tune, the rest is OK. There's way too much morrissey on this list!

Not bad, but nothing really stood out as worthy of making this list. A decent album of Morrissey songs, but not nearly as good as the stuff with the Smiths.

Was actually close to 4 stars. Gave most of it a second listen

I don’t know, this is fine. I didn’t hate it as much as I always kinda expect to hate Morrissey’s music that isn’t accompanied by Johnny Marr’s fantastic guitar but I still didn’t necessarily like it all that much either. 3 stars

Go ahead, and marry your favorite English city then.

Very solid. I really enjoyed Billy Budd, which I don’t know if I’d heard.

I kind of liked this one, for the most part. As I understand, he’s a bit of a douche…too bad, but I don’t let that influence my ratings. Anyway, this is between a three and a four for me. Probably closer to a three.

It was fine.

I find Morrissey to be “aggressively okay”. This is no exception

어우 듣기 좋아

I remember reading about this album when it came out. I never listened to it. I know Viva Hate really well the album he released after leaving the Smiths. This album he seems to have found a sound that complements his singing. It’s not Johnny Marr but it’s close. The music is good. The lyrics are vintage Morrissey sure he is a racist and full of his nationalist bs. I can separate it on a few things. He is just an odd person. I think plenty of these old guys have embraced nationalism as a viewpoint. It’s a horrible stance.

Mit dem Morrisey werde ich nicht warm.

I still don’t like Morrissey, but maybe I don’t hate him

As much as I dislike Morrissey as man I can’t get away from the fact he’s done some good albums, although I do wonder where he would be without the talents of people like Johnny Marr and other backing musicians

It was an alright one, I liked his others more Will I listen to again: 25%

Yeah, whatever. The most middle of the road album imaginable. Nothing offensively bad, but nothing great either Favorite Song: Spring Heeled Jim, Speedway

This was just alright, I prefer The Smiths over Morrissey's solo work. Very same album. Also obligatory fuck Morrissey. Favorite Track - The More You Ignore Me The Closer I Get Least Favorite Track - Hold On To Your Friends. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Morrisey is a good lyricist. This album is quite good. It's not great. Starts out a lot better than it finishes. Not even taking 2026 Morrisey into consideration. It's almost a 4 on its own. (Very good, but I won't be listening to it again.) However: Johnny Marr is worth a star.

Very nice. Well made.

Not my cup of tea but not unlistenable. It reminded me of the Smiths but less melancholic, or at least less whiny. Edit: this dude is the singer for the Smiths so that explains the resemblance. 3/5.

Politics aside, this is an ok album that fails to match his or the smiths previous work

So this album was more tolerable than other Morrissey/Smiths albums I've had. Used to Be a Sweet Boy stood out. 2.5/5

This one I'm struggling with, because I am appreciating that he's going in a more straight 90's alternative direction vs. his old janglepop/post-punk stuff with The Smiths. But his voice, especially on the more rocking cuts, kinda gets drowned out, and I've never particularly been a fan of his vocals. This is one of his better vocal performances though. Hold Onto Your Friends has an amazing melody as well.

I initially expected this album to bore me, but surprisingly, it didn't. It was actually sort of pleasant to listen to as background music while I completed random tasks.

Pretty enjoyable album Standout songs: Now my heart is full Why dont you find out for yourself Speedway

He's a twat, but it's decent.

would've been a 4 if morrissey wasn't a prick #shame

no me disgustó pero a veces se siente como si la base musical no hiciera match con la voz idkkk

no estuvo malo pero no destaca

My daughter's really like The Smiths so this album made me think of them. I like listening to his voice. Its not necessarily comforting but it makes me feel at ease. However the production of this album doesn't feel intentional. Its slightly messy. Favorite song: I Am Hated For Loving. The song alone is a 4.5 to me.

I thought this album was a little slower and sadder than The Smiths albums I’ve listened to. It was a little interesting, but kinda just unremarkable. Nothing particularly stood out, but it wasn’t horrible either.

This is actually a good album but he loses 2 points for being Morrisey

5/10… madchester / britpop / *1994

Billy Budd kinda goes. The Closer I Get is nice. It's all good enough, I just think it would have been a lot better had it had some more bite to it. The songs are begging for the snare to cut through, for louder guitar, a bigger and sharper sound in general. As is it kinda hangs there when it shouldn't

actualyl pretty good ut is this not just the smiths guys? Hold on lemem search ot up update it actauly is

While the instrumentation and arrangements change, Morrissey doesn't shape his vocal performance to the song. It just sounds like the exact same poetry reading over different backgrounds, instead of the vocals adapting to the music. This is important to me as I value the instrumentals, the melody, harmony, and rhythm, much more than the content of lyrics. So, a 3 maybe for the instrumental performers, the engineers, and the production staff, but nothing for the vocals. I wish that Morrissey had discovered how to expand his vocal performance skills. Baffled how this makes anybody's list. I'll take Tom Jones THE LEAD AND HOW TO SWING IT from 1994 over this. At least Tom Jones knows how to deliver a varied vocal performance.

I hate this man and this album just makes me miss the smiths.

Still doesn’t have the sauce The Smiths albums have.

Favorite Track: Speedway

I'm looking forward to encountering a Smiths album on this app. Meantime, we have this offering from Morrissey. It's not too shabby and each track seems to attain the same standard. But unfortunately it ends up feeling like a poor man's Smiths album. It's also difficult to listen to this without remembering how bonkers Morrissey's views became post-Smiths.

As much as I despise Morrissey for his political views and narcissistic, pompous persona, I can’t deny that he has an amazing voice and a real knack for poetry. His ability in that regard is present here, but The Smiths ultimately have far better albums than this.

Music: Excellent. Lyrics: Confusing and English. Singing: Whiny. So whiny. So very mopey and whiny. I think I just don't like Morrissey. 3.

Morrissey has great descriptive language / turn of phrase - “Spring Heeled Jim,” “I will be in the bar with my head on the bar,” “ I near more grudges than lonely high court judges,” “the sanest days are mad”. His voice is great. I do miss the Smiths band back up on this album though. I need the Smiths or Morrissey’s sound is too swoony for me. Morrissey tried a different vocal style on “Sleeping Lifeguard/Dying Girl.” I’m not sure if I like it. Possibly more listens to it are required to decide.” “Speedway,” is more my speed. (Yes, I know what I did there).

Didn’t love, didn’t hate.

Ahhh, okey

Separate the art from the artist. Yes, an absolute plum and it’s not the Smiths, however a decent album, and well worth a listen. Enjoyed it 3.6/5.

I mean it’s basically a decent smiths album so it certainly does the job, but i’m not head over heels for it. And i know morrisey sucks, but his vocals are something special. Standouts are Hold on to your Friends and The more you ignore me.

Oh, Moz, you pretentious, self-centered, insufferable turd. Some of this is actually enjoyable.

I kind of liked his style and his voice was nice. But the music didn't really do anything for me.

I thought I was going to hate this album but it turned out to be quite tolerable.

Well, it sounds less mopey than Morrissey's other works that I've listened to, and some songs (e.g., "Billy Budd") are downright energetic. Still nothing that makes me especially interested in listening a second time, though.

Its fine. Not a fan of the man or his voice but there are good songs on here. Probably slightly prefer it to Viva Hate too

His voice is so velvety…enjoyed the listen!

I read a review saying this was Morrissey's best solo album and I might have to agree with that. Steve Lillywhite made this and Under the Table and Dreaming in 1994 so I can see why this album is pretty solid. There's one hit track that I've heard before. Still, its Morrissey solo and its not that great at all.

Smiths lite.

So fun!

I hadn’t ever heard any of these songs. I liked it

He’s a great songwriter, with the whimsical lyrics and intriguing sounds you expect from the Smiths present here on this solo record. What’s missing, though, is the rest of the band and of course, Johnny Marr’s iconic guitar tone. Without those balances, the Morrissey of it all is the whole meal, and you have to be willing to submit to his particular voice and his particular moroseness. It’s good, but it suffers in comparison to the work of the Smiths. High three

Morrissey's take on britpop - the band sounds like Suede or Pulp, but his voice is distinctly his own, all aching melodrama, pained pique, and sweeping nostalgia.

Well, it's a lovely record. A folksy one. Beautiful vocals, great guitars , and really good songs. I'm sorry, not concentrated enough the last few days. I think I'll give it a high 3 and move on. Maybe come back to it later. (Thinking of having a little break until I can pay more attention again, let's see what I'm getting today)

Pretty good, relaxing. Although, It dies kind of sound like a stripped down version of the Smiths.

I concede I liked it. Could use more songs like speedway

I like this album. It comes across as warmer and in many ways more personal than others of his. But I continue to contend that there is no reason to have more than one Morrissey album on this list. His music and style do not change that significantly on each album to need to do that. So pick one of his solo ones and maybe one of the Smiths at most.

Solid smiths like offering Morris’s lyrics whirling chinky guitars all in place but lacking the real magic

Tolerable, some genuine good tunes in here but nothing more.

Better than I thought

Good album, good album. Lyrically boring as hell but production-wise it's solid, and Morrissey's voice is confident. Fav tracks: Now My Heart Is Full, Spring Heeled Jim

Mopey, but decent tunes.

its from 1994, but why does it sound like its from the 70s or 80s. melancholy and somewhat nostalgic sounds. liked i am hated for loving.

My 3rd solo album from Morrissey and they all could get the exact same review. Decent music and arrangements, strong first half. Not life changing, can take it or leave it.

Have to admit, I enjoyed this, but Morissey is still a problem.

I was fully expecting to hate this album because, historically, I can’t stand Morrissey. But this was a slightly pleasant surprise. Morrissey “stays out of the way,” so to speak, of these tracks and his voice is totally tolerable. Not a terrible listening experience.

It wasn’t bad. Pretty surprised honestly.

Actually a 1000 times better than I thought. I can tell that Morrissey is influenced by Scott Walker, with his lyrics and chamber popmusical arrangements being quite pleasant. The first song is really good for example "Now My Heart is Full" 3/5

the more you ignore me is alright

No Morrissey, I'm not going to give you a 5/5. 3/5

One of those alblums I would have nor listened to if it wasn't for this app. Glad I was exposed. I am pleasantly surprised with a three

Not crazy about this album. Very blah

Well, i always kinda wanna hate on solo Morrissey stuff, but this wasnt too bad either. Not smiths at all, but pretty enjoyable

Not really my thing, but no one was trying to turn fornication into art form, nor scream at me, or make me want to kill myself, or producing a tribal rhythm- so all in all I guess it wasn’t too bad really.

Morrissey has been in the news lately for canceling a concert because of a lack of sleep, blaming it on festivities in Valencia. I understand that he's getting old, so I don't have a problem with the first part, but blaming it on the locals is not a very classy move. That's immaterial to my review of this album, however (although it does kind of track with how he describes himself here). I thought the music was pretty good, and I still enjoy his baritone voice. This album didn't blow me away, but I thought it was pretty strong. Favorite track(s): "Why Don't You Find Out for Yourself"

Well, well, well. For such an awful and sad man these days, Morrissey does actually make good music without the Smiths. Very much enjoyed this. Great vibes on this. Speedway is a powerhouse of a closer which made me shout holy shit at the start. Never thought I’d say it but looking forward to more

Eh. It’s Morrissey. I feel like if this list originated outside the UK, there wouldn’t be nearly as much Morrissey. I did like some of the lyrics on this one though.

Perfectly fine as background music, otherwise completely uninteresting.

What a voice. But that melancholy mood can only be taken in small doses.

This was better than I expected and had a few songs I had never heard that I liked including Billy Budd and Why Don't You Find Out for Yourself. The single is a good one too, but I had heard it before.

Yeah, is it just the rest of The Smiths that's missing here or is it an older adult turning into a less interesting artist?

Wow it's like The Smiths all over again. I'm starting to get the impression that Robert Dimery (author of the 1001 Albums books) is just a really big fan of British rock – almost disproportionately so. It's not that "Vauxhall and I" is awful, it's just nothing special.

Super meh on this one, learned a lot about this Morrissey guy through a bit of research though. Divisive, interesting fellow it seems. Not much of an opinion on him tbh, but Morrissey's character aside, the album was nothing special. I didn't love his floaty lyric style, and slightly odd & concerning song names... Plus those piercing blue eyes and dark brows on the cover are piercing straight through to my soul, and not in a good way... 5.5/10?

New for me. I liked it but I don't think it's great in any way.

I prefer Morrissey with The Smith's but I am a sucker for this nice sounding mopey man. Fine to make fun of him. I'm glad he makes music. Strong three

This is fine, but as we go along I'm learning that I like him more with The Smiths. The production is overall lacking a bit. The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get was a pretty good one.

It’s not really that cool to like Morrissey at the current time but leaving that aside I grew up listening to the Smiths and their music formed a large part of my teenage years. His solo stuff can be a bit hit or miss though. This album is ok I think, it’s not his best but it’s definitely not his worst. The tracks he has released for his new one in 2026 are sounding pretty good so looking forward to hearing that album.

It's not too bad. Easy listening, not too whiny. I enjoy the gothic vibes. I'm pretty sure we've had a morissey album before, and I think I like this one more.

Solid 3. My ear kept picking up on some fabulous guitar, which paired beautifully with his moody vocals. The album was a little inconsistent for me - but I did love the softness/intimacy in songs like "Hold On To Your Friends". I don't think I would revisit this album.

Rush To Danger, Wind Up Nowhere 1001 Albums Generator 240 (3/4/2026) As a fan of The Smiths, I was excited to check out Morrisey's solo work. So much of this album feels like a continuation of what The Smiths were doing. The opener, Now My Heart Is Full, might be my favorite song. We get to see The Smiths' formula expanded on with a britpop flavor. Some of the layered guitars are also very shoegaze. One immediate change I noticed in this album is it's not nearly as jangly as classic Smiths albums, and it leans a lot more into alt rock/britpop at various times. Other styles include the strange psychedelia of Spring-Heeled Jim, the soft dreaminess of Hold On To Your Friends, and the chamber pop of Used To Be A Sweet Boy. My least favorite songs tend to be the slower ones like Why Don't You Find Out For Yourself and I Am Hated For Loving. There also aren't any songs here that approach the genius of the greatest Smiths songs. Every one of their albums has at least one or two songs that are just in that uppermost echelon of music generally, and this one is just a collection of fine songs. 3.5, rounded down to 3. Favs: Now My Heart Is Full The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get Speedway Least Fav: I Am Hated For Loving

Enjoyed listening to it but felt quite forgettable once it was over.

Fav: why don’t you find out for yourself 3:5

moody and cool

I suppose the album isn’t quite as edgy as Your Arsenal, but the sound is more (deliciously) Smiths-like. But none of the songs really land with me. Possible exception: “The More You Ignore Me, the Closer I Get.” 3.5?

Much like You Are The Quarry, I liked this. It’s solid throughout, but there’s nothing on here that’s going to live long in the memory.   Top Track - Billy Budd

Two Morissey albums in one week. Your Arsenal won me over right away, but this album not so much. I even gave it several listens just because of the way Arsenal had grown on me, but this one just didn't take.

2026.02.28

Morrissey isn't nice, but this is pretty nice.

I accidently listened to a few more versions of these songs, live-recorded in an extended release. They sounded better and had much more energy than the melancholy of the studio version. A grudging third star.

If the goal was to make every song sound the same, then mission accomplished

Sometimes maybe good, sometimes maybe bad. The More You Ignore Me, and The Lazy Sunbathers were good, the rest a little less so. Didn't mind it, him crooning away about whatever issues have grabbed him that week. Something enticing about the way he goes about things, even if sometimes he's a bit much.

Not heard this before and it was different to what I was expecting. He's still got his self deprecation, but with less of the humour that he often pairs with it. Didn't do it for me I might give it another go, but wasn't convinced upon first listening. The more you ignore me was the highlight. 3 for now

Was gonna give it a 4 til that whisper song came on and made my skin crawl thru the headphones

Not bad not great just meh.

Its ok. 2.5/5. Raising to 3.

3/11, 27%

I've learned in this albums generator that I'm not a huge Smiths fan, so being confronted with Morrissey this morning had me groaning. I feel I can appreciate this effort a little more, I think toning down the music to focus more on the lyrics works well for him. This isn't to say it's musically dull, maybe a little more commercial than I tend to appreciate, but plenty of talent is involved. If this is considered his best solo work, I'm not impressed. 2.7/5

Sounds like any other album from the 90s that leaned alt/jangle-rock. He definitely doesn't sound as operatic here compared to the Smiths, which fits nicely with the sound. It's not bad, but not much stood out to me either.

Ahhh this pompous ass again. The positive side of this album is there isn’t really much on it that is terrible. It’s the Smiths still, let’s face it. The negative side of this album is that there isn’t much “listen again” music on it. Like maybe none. That’s not a fail. It’s a shoot your shot and go home type of moment. It’s not great, it’s not terrible. I won’t listen to this album again and I’ll never listen to Morrisey again unless I’m forced to. Not because of this album. Just because of him.

I was a massive smiths fan back in the day up until their last album then I never even bothered listening to any morrissey albums. I did enjoy this but it didn’t have me hanging onto every lyric like the earlier smiths albums. Maybe a few more listens

3.5 stars

Music to fall asleep to. Fine, just very boring

# Album Name: Vauxhall And I # Artist: Morrisey # Rating: 3/5 # Comments: Such a mid morrisey album. Couple of good tracks. A lot of filler. wasnt awful but not his best work. # Top Tunes: # Would I listen to it again? No

Differentiating the art from the artist, some good songs but the latter fell short. It’s a good album but lacks variation and the songs kind of sound the same. But he’s perfected the same sound as good as he can I guess.

This one was better than the other Morrissey albums.

It’s a bit of a cliche to complain about disliking his vocals, but like all cliches, there’s a lot of truth in that. It’s a shame as he’s obviously a good lyricist

This dude again! It's fine, all his albums sound the same and I didn't need this many of them.

It's ok, just doesn't do anything for me.

Brit pop

Not bad

I still like his voice despite the music not being the best. This album wasn’t as sad boy as the others.

It was allright, kinda whiny at times.

Still whiny. All sounds the same.

While I am generally hit or miss with Morrissey/Smiths stuff, this was more of a hit. Some fun and interesting tracks with a good closer. It's still a pet peeve of mine that he is so relentless and continuous in his singing (doesn't give the music time to breathe) but still good. 3/5

Day755 - i thought i would hate it but alas the songs are catchy. darn you morrissey

Yeah yeah yeah. Problematic dude, but songs are incredible.

This had its good moments. I feel like I react differently to his voice every time I hear one of his albums. It didn't bother me on this one, his passion comes through in just the right doses. The More You Ignore Me was probably my fave track, albeit mildly creepy. Now My Heart Is Full is a good one too. Some other songs felt a bit too meandering, like he's never getting to the point. Overall, it was certainly enjoyable enough for a 3.

no mi tipo de voz

Yet another background music album. Meh

24/01/2026 This one was a little boring for me, but I've got no issues with it really. Spotify listeners: 2.4 million

This was pretty good. I didn't expect much, but it was quite a pleasant listen. Favourite Track(s): The More You Ignore Me, the Closer I Get Least Favourite Track(s): Billy Budd

nice music, shitty guy

Enjoyable but nazi

Like the smiths, no songs really jumped out at me but album is a good listen

As all albums its pretty good his voice is soothing bit not his best.

On my way to work in New York’s Finance District every day, I’d see a big red graffiti tag high up over Century 21 that said something along the lines of Morrissey Rules (it’s sadly gone now). But every time I saw that while emerging from the subway, I’d think, ‘they’re absolutely right.’ Morrissey does have some excellent songs under his belt. People hate his politics, which from what I’ve read aren’t bad, he just doesn’t like royals. Blasphemy. He’s said some stupid things in his ongoing quest to spread veganism. That’s annoying, yes, because who doesn’t like a steak, but technically, if we got rid of the meat supply chain, the planet’s pollution problems would greatly decrease. So, go Morrissey. This album, however, does not quite rule. It’s pretty to listen to, as you’d expect from Morrissey. It is luxurious. But he also sounds tired. The lazy sunbathers is the only song which really paints a lyrical image and creates a musical vibe with me. A day after listening, it’s the only takeaway I remember. That, and a feeling of boredom, wishing it would end so I could put on something more exciting. I don’t this this is M’s strongest effort.

Just learned that he's the singer of the band The Smiths. Really nice voice, actually. Not too much out of the ordinary, though, but had a good time listening. Worth checking.

Bättre än förväntan. Det bästa Morrisey jag hört utanför smiths. 3.5

Is that a fucking chainsaw in Speedway? Who thought that would be a good idea? I was actually enjoying the incel music up until that. Fave track: Now my Heart is Full

Weird man, weird views, weird tracks with weird lyrics. 2.5/5

Always a favorite. Have had hits and misses with the re

Like it 3/5

I am very familiar with the work of The Smiths but have never listened to any of Morrissey’s solo work. It was much more melodic and less angst ridden than his group work. Somehow his voice sounded lighter….if that makes any sense.

I bought this CD as a teenager, and whilst it is now difficult to separate the art from the artist, you can't deny that he has a way with words and cranks out some catchy tunes. I'm not really angsty enough to listen regularly but maybe it will roll round into my rotation in a few years.

Decent.

Ben oui, évidemment, il y a rien de mieux que la petite face smug de Morrissey pour me remonter le moral, merci ben le gros

Every time I hear something by Morrisey that I like, I feel like I'm doing something wrong. I feel weirdly embarrassed for liking this as much as I do. I'm not sure why. Heavier than the Smiths' in a lot of places, thematically and guitaristically (I had to invent a word, not sorry). Morrisey's voice is as smooth as ever, but he goes to a few different places with this one, stylistically (lots of -ically words today, lots of parentheses as well!) I think he's being less bombastically campy and untouchable, bitter. More... down to earth? Still lyrically clever, playing with poetic structure in pleasant and surprising ways. I was very pleasantly surprised by the energy and great guitar work on here.

Nice record, lead singer of The Smiths.

I like mellow music, but I prefer it with some more musicality and better vocals..

Pretty safe kinda music here. I didn't mind this compared to some of the obnoxious Smiths stuff I've heard. Probably the best output by Morrissey I've come across so far.

*1994. *Pretty standard Morrissey faire, but nothing stood out here. You can tell it's a later album. RATING - 6/10

Somehow Morrissey always sounds like he is fed up with life and just about to put a gun to his head. I guess that is the appeal? The album is not bad though.

On Vauxhall and I, Morrissey retreats from the jangly melodrama that once defined his solo work into something more muted and inward-looking, favoring soft-focus electronic textures and moody atmospherics over sharp hooks. The shift isn’t without its pleasures—“Now My Heart Is Full” benefits from lusher, more polished production that flatters Morrissey’s croon, while “The More You Ignore Me, the Closer I Get” briefly revives the familiar jangle that longtime fans crave. Still, the album often feels trapped in a narrow emotional register, with Morrissey delivering nearly every song in the same mournful, sighing tone, blurring tracks together. “Spring-Heeled Jim” is weighed down by puzzling spoken-word snippets that distract more than they add, and the revved-up sound effects on “Speedway” verge on kitsch. At its best, Vauxhall and I hints at a mature, atmospheric evolution; at its worst, it drifts by in a gray, overcast haze that never quite lifts.

Decent. Morrisey definitely misses Johnny Marr but he still has some nice backing instruments and sound

Not nearly as good as his music with the Smiths, but there is just something about his music I can't get enough of Best Song: Now My Heart is Full Rating: 6/10 Stars: 3

It's just Morrissey, doing his thing. No particular standouts on this one like "You're the One for Me ,Fatty." Would be very interested the justifications for multiple solo albums from this guy.

I had heard of Morrisey but had never listened to any of his music. I liked his voice and the album was a nice listening experience.

A generic jangle pop / britpop album with the only remarkable aspects being the incredibly clean production, some nice guitar melodies and the very smooth singing. The only songs that I can say I really liked are 'Spring-Heeled Jim' and 'Speedway'. The chord progressions and melodies in the first one are very appealing, and the last one ends the album in a very high note. The rest is incredibly forgettable, specially almost everything in the second half. They are all slows tunes with nothing much going on. Another thing I must mention is that the lyrics, while being sad, are not even comparable to the top writing when he was in The Smiths. I'll admit that I have only listened to 'Meat is Murder' from the band and this record from Morrisey's solo career, so my comparison is only based between these two projects. There is nothing more to say. If this album didn't sound as clean as it does, I would give it a bad rating.

Very ok

I haven't listened to many solo albums by Morrissey, so this one was also new to me. I quite liked it at first listen, I think it's a good album. The start and last few songs were the best, probably, some songs in the middle fell a bit flat. Perhaps I need more listens, at first it's a strong 3 star album.

It's extremely fucking Morrissey.

This is a tough one because I really like the music of the 90s and early 2000s that was influenced by The Smiths / Morrissey. But this album didn't really hold my interest. I'll probably go back to it, and other Morrissey albums. Why Don't You Find Out For Yourself is my favorite.

good stuff. i don't know that i'd call it exceptional but it made me get why morrissey is well-regarded as a solo artist. just good ol' tunes to throw on. love Now My Heart Is Full

Rating: 7/10

Decent listen, I always wonder if the meaning of morrissey's music is way more shallow than I assume or way more deep 6.8/10

6 Not Brown Eyed Girls out of 10 Lizard Wizards

not as annoying as i thought it would be

I thought I wasn’t supposed to like this, but I kinda do. Now that I think about it, like the man, it started out in a more interesting fashion than it ended up.

It's fine. A couple memorable tracks, and a lot of pleasant background music.

Standard Morrisey fayre. Lost count now of how many Morrisey albums I’ve reviewed now but overall there is very little to set them apart from each other. I now have come conclusion that you really only need one Morrisey album in your collection to know what he’s about. 3/5 12/12/25

I mean, Morrissey is classic, also a huge prick.

The album is ok, the sound is nice, Morrissey's voice is great as always, but I miss the creative style of The Smiths songs. 2,75/5.

It's a Morrissey album. Palatable but not my thing.

foolish

Man, it was good not great. I like The Smiths better
