Like you look at nu metal… that was a mind virus that everyone and every studio wanted to recreate every single time because it was the bread and butter of the studio
And while there are the big stand out artists that everyone knows?
Man there’s prolly 1000 other ones that they didn’t hit the mark by a few chords but essentially were the building blocks for the big boi
Like you like to think the Beatles popped out of thin air but they were just a few chords different to everything that was happening around them
That the studios and labels were looking for that sound
The fact it got recorded in Abbey Road studio 2 years before the Beatles kicked off?
Every great group is the ledge that took steps to get too
The ledge didn’t just appear
Chord by chord
Vocal nuance by vocal nuance
Story by story were all formulated like a spaghetti bolognese some Italian grandmother comes up with
She didn’t just make it on the spot
Spice by spice and timing by timing all judged by criticism and success led to that perfect dish
They saw the zombies… not exactly the most marketable name
The lyrics and delivery?
9 steps of the Beatles make up
But the Beatles were the perfect saleable bolognaise
But did they appear out of thin air?
No they rode the choices and content and delivery of bands like the zombies pop psychedelic waves and tweaked that lock ever so slightly that put them into the commercial sphere
Noooooo wonder John went mad
He must of felt like an industry fraud no different to milli vanilli
Definitely listen again
This album was enjoyable as all hell. I love that it’s got such a back story of how complex these tracks were to play and the vision Monk had to push through the turmoil in order bring these tracks to life… now? Do I think you need to hear this album before you die?
If you want to hear how Jazz became complex? How Jazz moved into the Miles, Coltrane technical era? Subsequently creating artists like Prince?
Then I will suggest you listen.
If none of that means anything to you?
Then you have every reason to skip.
But it is an enjoyable, albeit specific, listen that I’ll happily return to but I don’t know if others will
Nick Drake at his saddest
Absolutely enjoyed every second of this album
Was different. Didn’t really take. Will have to give it more listens
Powerful Christmas album
Phil really knew how to blaze a tune
I listened to this album firstly at 5:45am
It made no sense.
Again at 1:27pm.
Wasn’t feeling it.
Started playing a power wash simulator at 4:57pm with this album on in high definition headphones?
Finally made sense.
I love when you listen to an album you don’t listen to all that often but you have friends who do but they inspire a band you listen to all the time.
Like there’s no real shoegaze without Echo.
You hear so much My Bloody Valentine in this. So much Sonic Youth.
Even Marilyn Manson.
Easily one of the best spin offs from the Wu-Tang legacy. The Rza being noted to push Gza to his wits end to get these verses on track when the Wu had become comfortable in their success and were all going their own way. When the Gza found that space where he could start spitting “Liquid Swords” it created one of the only times and solo albums where the entire clan jumped on like Voltron.
Didn’t really get this one
That was an absolutely enjoyable and groovy listen through. It was acrobat with a Miles Davis/ John Coltrane buzz to it.
This album I have no idea why it is in anyone's list of albums to listen before they die. I mean, I get it... you wanna create an album that sounds like nothing else?
But that doesn't mean you allow yourself to create an album that is so hit and miss... the repetitive lyrics.
The lack of flow this has is outstanding and I get it... you wanna make it arty and you want to stand out?
I dunno, unless you're really into your Manchester sound, brit/ scot pop and you can delineate between the nuances?
It finds itself in an incredibly hard spot to engage with a new listener.
Don't get me wrong? it has its moments when it slides into that trip hop aesthetic and there is some genuinely good moments but then there's a fair amount of drop off.
I just believe and I wish I could get on it's level because I do appreciate "art for art sake" style records.
This one just has moments and then it has other moments.
But it isn't something I wouldn't revisit later on, because I know there is stuff there I just haven't cracked the code completely.
So because of that revisit factor? I am going 1 star higher than middle of the road.
Not the right person to ask about this one.
The monkees just don’t really do it for me.
I get the idea and appreciate the effort but I just can’t vibe with the outcome.
After talking to many folks about this album? From here and abroad?
It's a very different story.
When Galang dropped in 04 in Sydney Australia?
We went nuts.
Not just a lil rowdy?
Nuts.
So when Arular came out in 05?
It became the banger of the year.
A month and a half later Trent Reznor drops With Teeth and then goes on record saying that he wishes his album was as dynamic Arular by M.I.A.
Immediately sending the flag out to work with her.
Everyone who was everyone wanted this girl to work with them.
So I can understand why this album is in the list of things you need to listen to?
Cause if you think about the scene back then with everyone complaining about "real instruments"?
And the flood of faux garage and rock groups?
Jet, The Hives, The Strokes, White Stripes and all of that?
Out of nowhere comes a refugee banger that took on all the war sentiments feeling at the time and made folks dance through it.
It's a real important album if you know why it came to fruition and how that product shifted aforementioned Trent Reznor's mind set for the next incarnation of NIN when he broke free from all the record labels.
The Slip
Hesitation Marks
The rise and fall of Niggy Tardust - Saul William's album he produced?
Yo... this record hit the right people and changed how music was heard.
Kudos MIA
Aside from the over use of the channel fader? This album is near perfect
I dunno, if you like blues and rock you’ll get something out of it but if that’s not your go to? Then there’s not much here.
As an Australian this was an album that was hard to listen to.
Was cool til it wasn’t
To be fair?
It wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.
It had a calming quality in traffic and was able to appreciate bands like City and Colour and artists like Dustin Kensrue a lil more deeper.
I can not say enough about this album
It has and will always be one of my absolute favourites
I’ve always loved Maxwell
It’s good to know he pioneered Neo Soul
I mean, if you like mudhoney’s approach to the wall of sound.
Personally could never get past the vocals
It’s like being on Mr Toad’s “Wild Ride”, whilst being served high tea by some groovy cat in a space uniform. Utterly brilliant.
An amazing example of an American garage band.
Spectacular album.
I remember when this came out and just how it took over the world. You couldn’t go anywhere without hearing the white stripes
The fact he made this music in the 70s still blows me away
This was an album that closed the door on britpop as everyone came to think of it at the time.
Whether you liked Brit Pop or not?
There was no escaping the impact of this album. It closed the book on an entire genre.
I truely that if Blur didn’t do this album then Radiohead doesn’t do ok computer.
It’s a brilliant body of work from a woman that young. She was just given the spark
Absolutely enjoyable front to back
Absolutely stellar record.
So beautiful and so haunting.
Couldn’t stop listening.
I would enjoy life as a whole, significantly more, if I never had to listen to this again.
No significance, no desire to learn why or how this made it on the list.
This is the type of album you do this thing for
This album changed how hip hop was listened to in all perpetuity.
Very few albums reach this tier.
There was something special about this even during the recording where Kanye made all the performances do their part in black tie.
Now, I get this album. It’s a lil episode in Mike Skinner’s existence. Where he loses a grand, bums on a bird name Simone’s couch cause she’s got a better tv that he can watch the game on whilst he punts and fiddles the fruit machines trying to win back his 1000.
Mix this with the drugs and the paranoia and the inevitable heart break when he’s finally booted from Simone’s couch cause she’s shacking up with a new bloke, only to end it all in jubilation when he finds the grand with his buddy Scott.
I get all of this and if you can get on board with Mike’s specific delivery?
It’s a decent follow up concept record.
But does it need to appear on a must listen list?
I wouldn’t know how it ended up on one.
Someone has to explain that part to me.
I just can’t get by the singles on this tripe.
It’s worse than U2 how they get stuck in your heads
What do you say about this album? It’s just good music. The late 90’s was a stomping ground of quintessentially good music and this is no exception. It opened a lot of windows to what world music could be and that was? Damn enjoyable.
I dunno. If you’re into the history and universe of Steely Dan you might find this interesting. I personally didn’t.
Pleasantly surprised by this one.
Man, what an album for that period in life. It’s an existential masterpiece that draws you into asking questions about yourself and your understanding of others. Plus it has one of mine and 2Pac’s favourite songs of all time on it - Vincent.
Too tier stuff from a visionary of the genre
I feel like I should of learned something but didn’t
One of the best albums to come out of the early 2000’s
One of my all time faves. Could listen for days.
Yeah, could have gone my life without listening to this one. 2 for effort.
I rate Honky over this… as I keep wondering why he stacks it all up front and then sort of fades away… but I guess that’s above my pay grade.
Yeah, it was ok. Wasn’t my favourite live album…. But it was pretty good.
I can imagine when it came out… it made an impact. But once again?
I don’t know how it is a “must” listen album
I really enjoyed this from front to back. Absolute solid effort. It felt like a man shooting his last ditch at making a solid album. And he achieved.
It had its moments for me.
Did I really have to this?
Would revisit. Didn’t have a great deal of time with it.
Forgot about this banger. Thanks for the reminder.
Absolute ripper bonza beauty mate
Love Skin. Love this album. No idea why it made it to this list other than the author is surprised that a black bald chick could entertain him.
Really enjoyed this record
Too much stoned politics for me
Why this is a necessary listen is beyond me…
I love Duke and this was a solid listen… but I don’t know the necessary to listen to if you listen to other Duke?
It’s prolly REM’s most listenable album
Easy day when it’s a Nick Drake day.
Changed the Australian music topography
I think you have to be a certain type of person to relate to Rush’s vocals… musically it cops all of the 4.
I don’t know who needs to hear this album that already hasn’t heard this album?
How on earth did anyone escape this album when it was released?
Interesting listen for sure.
If you wanna listen to political music in the car? In the AM? Have a go at this.
Genius and thoroughly enjoyed
Absolutely adore the absolute hell out of this album
Did I really need to listen to this? Yes it has social implications and messages. Yes it paints a picture of a guy disappointed with the civil rights movement. But, the delivery and craft does not hold you
Good Sunday Jawn for sure
Surprisingly amazing jawn
My first back to front Dylan listen
Phenomenal and amazing. This record is an absolute staple to anyone’s collection.
One of the best albums ever made
I mean it’s Bowie, it’s definitely not quintessential Bowie and it’s really hard to see how this made it to the list.
Yeah I can’t get it. The vocals don’t excite me.
Pretty good in headphones
This does not belong here
I think I prefer My Bloody Valentine to this…
It’s oasis… how good can it be?
Paul Simon sings about New England like Anthony Kiedis sings about California
Amazing album. Played it 6 times today.
I feel like I need to be in a shared flat, with no job and 6 other dudes to vibe with this completely.
The Tea Party do it better
Why this album of all the “guitar revival” albums…
I don’t mind this album but I don’t know why it’s on the list
This album is a British wet dream
Came out when everyone was screaming about real guitars
It’s annoying
Sounds like the dude from the church went on Mr Toad’s wild ride and found himself in bed with a voluptuous siren only to wake up to find himself in bed with a shrivelled up cactus… surprisingly satisfying.
Nobody really needs to hear this
Not my fave Belle and Sebastian
Again with the Nick Drake
Great album if you’re not a Mexican broad or a horse
Great album if you’re not a Mexican broad or a horse
Longest 44 minutes of my life
