Tragic Songs of Life
The Louvin BrothersThis goes so hard. I love songwriting with a very specific perspective. Clear narratives and direct emotions matched with some good old fashioned country tunes.

Some damn good playing on this one! Kinda feel like most of it sounds pretty similar though
Some cute songs!
Fast Car is an all-timer! Surprised by how successful this was given how explicitly political it is
Mostly found this tedious. On a whole, I found it hard to engage with the narrative/concept and did not take much away from that. Individually, I found a few songs fun but mostly they ranged from boring to cloying.
Was curious about this because I felt like I’ve never really given the Stones a serious listen. The nature of this (fun and exciting) listening experience has left me still feeling like I haven’t given them a fair shake but I did listen to the whole album and found it mostly annoying and uninteresting. I quite dislike Mick Jagger’s style. Very little for me to latch onto otherwise
At one point this was my favourite Taylor album. I’ve since come to like her more folk/country-tinged music but I am still quite fond of her pure pop turns. I love a lot of the storytelling and songwriting in this though I’ve grown a bit more cold on the instrumentation and production of this then I used to be.
Excellent sounds and energy on this one. Real provocative lyrics that I feel like I should do some more reading on. Overall: fun!
Excellent vibes. Very evocative lyrics that really mad me want to live in their fantastical version of the south
Really brings out the certified hater in me. I like a lot of the quirky production in this that I used to be quite cold on and I do like a few of the songs but sitting through this whole this is not my idea of a fun time. I do like that it’s consistently weird but the only weird that I can really tune into at all is the noisier stuff at the end of Side 2.
One of the premiere Uncool bands. First half of this really had me thinking I was gonna become a RHCP convert, then it just kept going.
Love Petey. Great weird songs that I feel like I can really sink into. Excellent textures and rhythms.
So genuinely epic. Feel a bit strange giving this a 5 because it’s probably my third favourite metallica album but man does it go hard. So fun throughout with no dull moments and good variances of sounds and energy levels.
Fun listen! Not a lot really stuck with me but I’ll definitely revisit this in the future
Very pleasant music. Some lyrics make me cringe but overall I really like the writing style of both these nerdy boys.
Fun and good vibes but not a lot of staying power for me
I quite enjoyed the sound of this and I could see myself really liking this but I’m just not always in the mood for this and some of the lyrics irked me. Will definitely return to this.
Shocked by how modern this sounds. Loved it!
So good. Unique sound, deeply emotional and political and moving!
Have always liked this album and Wilco, though neither have ever been amongst my faves. Excellent textures and layers of sounds. Great chill and easy listening for me.
Did not care for this. Too Morissey-y for my tastes.
Bloody Well Right is so funny, these guys rock.
Some of the best sounds and jams I could ever want
So cool and so fun and the best.
An incredible voice, this list is really gonna turn me into a country fan
Maybe not my favourite Monk but I love the jazz! Gimme more jazz!
Lovin this Cash guy! His old man voice is very endearing and most of the covers really hit but the album loses a bit a steam towards the end for me. Still great!
Excellent vibes! Didn’t pay too close attention but would certainly revisit this and jam out
Pretty fun! Loud, rip-roaring time and exactly how I expected ZZ top to sound
Any album that has a song from a John Woo movie is cool by me!
All-timer grooves. Could listen to this forever.
Pretty cool! Instrumentation feels very raw and the vocals have a cool edge to them
I’ve always thought of Deep Purple as pretty lame so I had never given them a proper listen-through. I enjoyed a lot of the instrumentals and solos more than I was expecting and I actually kinda dug the first song . My verdict, however, remains the same: lame!
I used to be kinda cold on shoe gaze but recently I’ve been coming around to it and this album has made me want to explore even more!
Intensely nostalgic and quite fun but it does feel like it’s tailor-made for 10-year-olds.
Every single song on this is… fine? Found it overall quite tedious and wasn’t really on board at any point.
More nostalgia! I like the organ and a lot of the orchestral sounding stuff. Not my favourite AF album and I kinda feel like I’ve grown out of them as a whole.
I had fun! I’ll admit to being an ELO hater but today I went on a nice walk and it was sunny and warm and I had a pleasant time!
Borderline 5 for me. Love how meandering and noisy this gets but it always feels like it resolves into something melodic and pleasant.
Loved this! Very unique sounding folk but still pretty straightforward and digestible. Parts of it felt like being at a Ren Faire!
This sounds noisy and cool (RIP Steve Albini) but I find its contents mostly uninteresting. I’m always shocked at how popular Nirvana were and continue to be.
Fun! Started today grumpy and expected to be made more grumpy by this but was instead made less grumpy! I’m not a cynic after all!
Was mostly vibing with this and thought a couple early songs were quite good but then I really turned on this on disc 2. Found the latter half quite frustrating.
I enjoyed this but it felt like a very minor work? Not really sure why it’s on this list but fun! Damon Albarn’s music always feels, at best, mildly interesting and pleasant.
Fun, quick and energetic! Now this is easy listening
Not really my speed. I actually enjoyed that one instrumental track!
So fun! Love soundtracks and happy to listen to one for a movie that I would likely never be exposed to otherwise. Curious to know exactly why this is on this list but grateful for the uniqueness!
Had the day off today so I just kept listening to this album. Never gets old!
Perhaps exactly as much epicosity as I desire! <3 Jim Steinman
Pretty fun! Some good bops and unique sounds but has never done a whole lot for me. I do revisit it every so often and have a good time though and today was no different!
I like The National and I enjoyed listening to one of their albums!
An endlessly relistenable for me. Top-tier pared down, minimal folk that is emotional and so comfy
Perhaps I could give this a fairer shake on a better day but man I hated listening to this after a pretty miserable day.
I’m not too familiar with this genre so I’m not sure how this stands out but I quite enjoyed it! Seemed like at least one of the songs had a satirical bend which I thought was cool even though I didn’t fully understand
CCR! Excellent!
Feels so raw and energetic and purposeful. The whole album earns that exclamation point
This album has always felt so singular. Every sound and texture feels exploratory
Noisy meandering fun! Surprisingly easy listening tbh
So so solid. Love the production and flow especially.
Had a lot of fun with this! Have always shied away from The Grateful Dead because of their daunting oeuvre and because I had mostly heard that they were goofy, meandering and noodly. Which I forgot I love!
A fun album that made me want to dance!
I’ve never been a huge fan of Dre but this really won me over with just how breezy the whole album is. Fun bouncy production throughout is the key for me
I struggle with Led Zeppelin because I mildly enjoy most of their music but I never really enjoy listening to entire albums and when those albums are over an hour then they become pretty tiresome to me
Didn’t immediately gel with this, especially the vocalist and some of the samples, but could definitely see this growing on me! Found myself falling into the grooves on the longer tracks. Also I love the band name
Some of the sentences this man concots… One of those lyricists who just constantly blows me away
Her voice is truly astounding and the lyrics and accompaniments really just knock this thing way out of the park
Love a live album! You can really feel the energy of the crowd and the band feeding off of it.
Only very mildly interesting to me. Liked the instrumental track! May relisten.
Pretty unremarkable! Kinda nice at times
There are a few songs on here that I think are true greats. But I’ve never fully emotionally attached to this album above other Radiohead works. Anyway, love your review and love you Sameen ❤️
Should explore Megadeth more because this was quite fun!
I’ve been on a Neil listening spree since we saw him on Sameen’s bday. He has so much output and it’s not consistent in its quality or style which I absolutely adore because I see him as a truly fearless creator who accidentally fell into celebrity. This album is so consistent in quality even though it is quite dynamic. Some of the Young lyrics that I have connected with the deepest and some really fun songs!
Avoided The Boss because I used to be a classic rock hater but started listening mid-pandemic and have been a huge fan since. Now I’m a hater of all of the modern day bruce-alikes.
Somewhat fun in its noisiness but mostly seemed pretty bland and unremarkable!
Very pleasant!
Joy Division has never clicked with me in any meaningful way. Enjoyed this listening the most that I ever have. which is not a lot.
Thought I was going to like this a lot more! Fun enough!
A tremendous grower for me. Have brushed it off multiple times as an incomplete album with a few great songs . But every listen unlocks more and more songs and I think I’m starting to fully appreciate The Mac!
I really enjoyed this on a first listen! Great energy and fun, angry vocals and lyrics. Good discovery for me!
I always think of this as the most dated sounded Radiohead album because of a lot of the production sounds very 90s but man does that not take away from this. Really strong start with some front-loaded banger singles but it stays pretty consistent throughout. Love me some bends
Enjoyed this but wasn’t fully engaged. I’ve liked some of the other blues-y albums we’ve heard on here a lot more
This goes so hard. I love songwriting with a very specific perspective. Clear narratives and direct emotions matched with some good old fashioned country tunes.
Yes and King Crimson are my two pinnacles of a genre that has I think has incredibly high highs and not a lot else that I really have clicked with. I’ve also only listened to a small sample size of both of their vast discographies. But the albums I like of them both, I think I could listen to forever. This album specifically goes to so many fascinating places. I love the organ and bass sounds specifically on the first sprawling song and I love the way that song shifts to highlight different sounds. It’s pure sci-if!
Oooof! Thought maybe I would like this because the first song is pretty fun but that second song is dire. Pretty much disliked the vibes of this throughout. Yuck!
Good energy and a fun live recording but not incredibly memorable to me
Man, I’ve never been in on B&S. I’m usually a pretty twee guy but there is something about their sound that turns me off immediately. Can’t place my finger on it though. Maybe one day I will like them
Very fun and bouncy throughout!
I actually really enjoyed this! I kinda think Common can be pretty corny and there is some unfortunate homophobia but the instrumentals and production are just so so nice!
Not incredibly interesting to me but kinda fun!
Mark Knopfler’s noodling and talk-singing will always make me happy
Not particularly inspired by this but enjoyed it still!
Really heartfelt and sweet! I love Randy
Some great renditions of some great songs. Good fun!
Found this incredibly grating but mostly inoffensive.
I like this one slightly more than Unknown Pleasure!
I really enjoyed this! Cool blend of different genres and fun covers of classical songs
I love it when it’s just Bob, a guitar, a harmonica and some great words!
Gosh damn! These guys are consistent! I’ve listened to Bad Moon Rising so much but it never grows old.
Love me some early Roxy Music. Bryan and Brian are my good friends
I used to like David Bowie a lot more, and maybe if I return to his later stuff I will still enjoy it. But I really did not find much here to enjoy!
hell ya
mildly enjoyable
I’ve always assumed that MGMT is just riding off of some big singles but I really enjoyed this whole album!
Enjoyed tho more than I was planning on. Damn you English rock bands!
So cool, consistent and confident! So fly!
Long and a bit too uplifting for my taste but I enjoyed this different mode of TheBoss
U2 is cool!
Really vibed with this!
Another The The, another miss!
Some weird, wacky and fun things here but not a lot that really made an impact with me. I may revisit this.
Thank you for the fun, Mr. Clinton.
Some damn good playing on this one! Kinda feel like most of it sounds pretty similar though
Groovy and fun!
An interesting sound with some songs I enjoy but also not really something I often want to listen to.
The only thing keeping this above a 2 is the Weird Al soundalike “TV Dinners”
I love country music I guess
I’ve recently described Roundabout as one of my favourite songs ever so with that and Heart of the Sunrise and all of the other weird songs in between, this surely has to be one of my favourite albums.
Cool how David Byrne’s lyrics are both weird and cold and hard to parse but also just “I like the building I live in and my friends”
Really enjoyed this! Felt adjacent to some of Eno’s more pop stuff.
These guys seem chill and fun.
I did not hate this.
Not just Whatever! Pretty good! (trying to be Nick today)
Loved this! Very sleek and futuristic. Took me a while to get through because of its length but I find the repetition and ambiance quite intriguing.
Thought this was super cool. Definitely want to dig into some more TD.
I was disappointed to see another Deep Purple album but I ended up enjoying this quite a bit more than the other Deep Purple album!
I thought a lot of this was cool and it had some good wonky sounds but I didn’t love listening to this all in one sitting. Might grow on me more later but I feel like I could only really enjoy a couple of these songs at a time.
Read Nick’s review that mentioned the dropoff in quality between discs and as I was listening I was like “no way, this is so good” and immediately did. 2 had me like “okay nick, my bad”
Never really enjoyed this on previous listens but this time it really hit! This project is forcing me to reevaluate my grumpiness!
I loved this. Surprised I’ve never come across Mike Ladd but I loved how unique this sounded. Good sci-fi!
More brassy and “soul” than I was expecting. Not bad but not my fave.
Cool sounds but I much prefer Jamie xx’s fun solo stuff. Kinda thought this was a bummer.
I might need to turn in my hater badge…. I quite enjoyed this….
I like what this guy is doing!
Absolutely adored this. Fantastic live concept, great sleazy Tom Waits vibes. Jazz!
So jubilant!
This has always felt like one of the darkest and most off kilter REM records. Has some of my all-time favourite songs of theirs like Untitled and Hairshirt along with song of their most accessible bangers like Stand and Orange Crush. Weirdly, I feel like the album takes on a strange foreboding feeling when listened to in completion. Maybe in spite of the more straightforward pop singles or maybe because of them? Good record! Love these boys!
Excellent production throughout! And great lyrics! Those things are important for making a good record!
Really enjoyed the drum sampling on this specifically. Some lyrics came across as a bit corny but that kinda endeared me to it more.
I've always massively enjoyed NIN but I find it hard to listen to them frequently because I find their music so emotionally affecting. I love the darkness as much as the next guy but I don't always want to embrace that. Anyway, this slaps but it's also too sad. 5 stars.
Idk I guess I liked this. Confused at the amount of Dexys Midnight Runners. Feels inessential to me.
