2/10 I got bored. I can't listen to the whole thing. I did try. Not for me I guess. 4-24-2024

Well, I won’t lie. I was more than a little disappointed when this showed up. Flashbacks to seeing “Baby One More Time” on MTV and losing my teenage mind in lust and hormones at a house party with my pals. A lot of crossed legs and pillows over winkies that evening I can tell you. But I digress… The album itself is one truly great track (Baby One More Time) followed by relentless dirge. It’s abysmal.

Erm, are the people running this list OK? This isn't peerless pop music - one annoying hit doesn't mean this is a classic album

Perfectly acceptable pop. No, you know what, it’s not great. I think Britney got better as she went along, or at least the production got more interesting. My issue with this is that so many of these songs are about being controlled or submissive to her partner. It sets an unfortunate precedent for young girls who propelled this album up the charts. Fortunately, the antidote would arrive in about a year with Destiny’s Child. One positive: there’s a completely genuinely earnest love song on here called E-Mail My Heart which could only be done this earnestly in 1999.

This is a big contrast to the types of albums we’ve listened to so far. I’m, of course, familiar with all the hits in this, as I was in high school when it came out. I came in with an open mind, but once I got to Soda Pop, I knew: I do not like this. This is not surprising, but I also wouldn’t have been surprised to come out of it thinking “Actually, that’s a really good album!” It feels a little mean to give this a 1, but the last half of this is so, so, so bad.

To still feel enough masculine, I must give this 1 star. I feel the need of chugging a beer and watching football after listening to this to compensate and I don't even like football.

understand how its influential and what not but couldnt make it through more than half of any song. 1

Ainda não acredito que apareceu este pop jovem melado e não a fase mais assanhada de toxic.

Niet eens aan begonnen

Possibly the worst album I've come across in 3 years of working through this list. An objectively terrible piece of art that lacks any of the special sauce that I know pop from this era is capable of a la JT's Justified or Christina Aguilera's Stripped. As a staunch advocate for the key change I also now know there is such a thing as too many key changes in one album. Would rate zero stars (if I could) for having zero redeeming features and almost turning me against my most cherished musical trope.

Now a camp classic, but camp is about knowing something sucks and loving it anyway for the lols. I don't understand why we're all supposed to retcon this into being good. bUt ShE's aN iCoNiC pOp KwEeN! Who cares? Does pretending this is good somehow make it worth the abuse we now know she endured bc of it? Celebrating this is just celebrating the abusive corporate monoculture that victimized her. Sure, it was a defining sound of its time, but so was kid rock and the chilli's baby back ribs song. This music sucked in 1999 and it sucks now and nostalgia for pre 9/11 adolescence isn't fixing anything.

Listening to this from start to finish made me feel sorry for everyone else who is going to do the same in the future.

Presumably, if Sabrina was American her debut album would be on here too, then? "Baby One More Time" is of course iconic but the rest of this mass-manufactured, Disney production line pop is muzak for big box store shoppers.

Not my thing

no lo escuche me parecio muy pussy

I have to come at this one with an open mind, as this is not my thing in the slightest. 90s bubblegum pop is one of the few genres I just can't hack. It's undeniable that this is a great, iconic pop record, it's catchy and fun! However I can't get away from how manufactured this whole genre is though - overly produced, ghostwritten songs performed by stars who are groomed and abused by their labels and management. It's sad, and doesn't feel like real music.

This sucked, especially the worst rendition of The Beat Goes On.

Well I did listen but not for me. Modern pop Muzak yuk!

The positive thing about this, is that when I think of a 90s pop record, I think “two or three singles and 35 minutes of filler”. This record is an hour long, and most of the songs could pass for late 90s singles. The negative thing is that it sounds like two hundred people made this album, and not one of them had any creative care towards it. Completely dispassionate. There exists a line at which Art becomes Commerce in full. Good radio pop music often gets close to the line but doesn’t QUITE cross it. I don’t know exactly where it is, but it’s way East of this one. Not to mention the fact that there’s an actual human teenager in the mix being dragged around and exploited (look at the fuckin cover man, Jesus Christ) so that this can make a lot of people a lot of money.

This was a chore to get through. There's really nothing about this I liked.

Never thought I'd listen to this album, and now I have. It wasn't for me, and it wasn't particularly good. She has a good singing voice, but overall it is dull and uninteresting for me. Toxic is a banger though. I like that song. 1/5

1.5 Look, I totally get why it’s here… but no. I don’t want to spend this whole review going off on a boomer-esque rant, but I truly believe the late 90s/early 00s was the absolute worst era for pop music. I know it doesn’t mark the start nor the end of the manufactured, curated pop star, but it was at its worst here. So many of the hits from this period just feel so artificial and cheesy by modern standards, and I really believe the reason that they’re still looked upon fondly today is done more so out of nostalgia rather than actual admiration for the artistry. For me at least, music is all about self-expression, so if you’re just putting out something scientifically engineered by someone else to sell records, what’s the point? Oh yeah, money. Fortunately, I feel like this is something that has gotten a lot better in recent years, and I do think we’re in a golden era of pop now that the record labels aren’t as afraid to let stars take on a much larger role in the creation and production of their own music. Anyway, I’ll step off my soapbox now. Maybe I shouldn’t be looking at this album through a modern lens, but I just really feel like it’s hard not to find this album dated as you’re listening. I admittedly was a little surprised by some of the diversity in sound here, but then again, it also felt like some producer was going through and trying to check boxes. Topically and lyrically, it left a lot to be desired - at its core, every song seems to boil down to the same kind of lovesick teenager thing (felt like “love” and/or “heart” was mentioned at least once on every track). Not really much stood out to me besides the obvious megahit, but I will give credit to I Will Still Love You for being surprisingly enjoyable, though it transitions into the most annoying gummy pop song on the album in Deep in My Heart. Also, I gotta point out E-Mail My Heart - it’s hard not to crack a smile at that one. So, I didn’t really enjoy my listening of the album, but I want to end my review on this - I have no disrespect or ill will towards Britney by any means. Why would anyone say no to fame and fortune, especially at her age? If anything, I have a bit of sympathy for her knowing she was largely forced into the role by selfish, greedy parents, not to mention the resulting developmental issues and media response. I’m glad Britney is doing much better now and that society has a much more considerate and understanding outlook on mental health today. Hell, if I’m being honest, I would even be interested in giving her memoir a read. Like her or not, there’s no denying her place as the Princess of Pop, and for better or for worse, she changed all of pop music to come after.

I did not care for her music when it came out back when, but I listened to this entire record anyway since previously I have been pleasantly surprised with previous entries in this list that I found I now enjoy or do not dislike. However, nothing has changed. I do not like her music. It definitely had an impact and she was, I guess still is, insanely popular, but there's nothing here for me.

I know that we've been rehabilitating Britney as a pop icon of late and I'm all for it but boy did this age badly. I'm not even a pop hater or anything, I just thing these songs are abysmal.

God damn did that suck. How did we survive culturally through the beginning of the Century with music like this all over the radio? Seriously, there's only one "good" song on this.

We can all agree that Britney Spears is an iconic and important popstar of the 2000s, however, from a strictly musical standpoint, we can all agree that we don't need to listen to these meaningless, premade, insignificants songs before we die.

Not my style

Just not the Depeche Mode that I enjoy. Some good tracks, a lot of ones I cared nothing for.

No thanks. I can't listen to this. My fingers won't hit the play button.

Vile nonce pop

Bland and boring

The only way I could ever have been into this was if I was 12 when it came out and all my friends were into it. But in reality, I was a 19 year old dude with a very different taste in music. I saw this as trashy bubblegum pop for the masses, and frankly it still sounds that way today.

For her first music video, whichever record executive was behind this travesty dressed this 16 year old child in pig tails and a Catholic school girl outfit and blatantly sexualized her. This “album” was obviously marketed in part toward pedophiles. The people who made this pile of garbage should be in jail. Substantively, this isn’t an album. It’s two singles and a bunch of filler. I am dumber for having listened to this. Absolutely terrible.

This was pretty painful. A few catchy songs I guess but mostly not pleasant.

No please no!

I would rather listen to my kids yell and fight in the car than listen to this. I don't understand how this makes it. It was a cultural sensation at the time but a team of writers and producers churn out this garbage and Briitney steps in to recite the prewritten lyrics.

Apart from baby one more time, I didn’t get any of the songs. It’s too commercial and if it’s not a club song then it’s just a bit bad 1/2**

I honestly think "...Baby One More Time" is an essential listen. Just that song though. The rest is actual garbage. To the point where this still averages out to a 1.5 (rounded down per protocol).

I'm not a Britney hater, I quite like Britney. And the title track here is great, but the album itself is just nooooot. Some of the most boring teen pop ballads the 90s had to offer & lyrics that were very apparently written by dudes in their 40s for a 16 year old to sing. Just very offputting throughout.

I hated this album so so much. This kind of pop music never ceases to amaze me with its vapid lyrics and uninteresting music. But the appetite for this kind of sugary ear cancer is even more inexplicable. But… even with that being said…I hated it and I hate that it exists.

🤣😬😖

You know I thought, I remember this song it was catchy, it was the turn of the millenium. Ill give it a go ill open my mind and ears and just listen. The substandard pop by number title hit was the highlight. Down a rabbithole of schrunchy sacrin terrible pop with a subtext that just seemed to be child explotation. I think this is the music industry at its worse and I feel sorry for her.

I got through this by checking out the credits and Googling who else put in the hours apart from Britney. Eric Foster-White and Max Martin are the main culprits. It is vapid, chewing gum music, slickly produced and cynically written. I enjoy a lot of vapid, cynically-written television, but and is the equivalence of being too tired/stoned to change the channel at 3am and watching some Hallmark bullshit. The Beat Goes On was a surprise halfway through, as I quite liked The Allseing I, and this was that, identically, again, but with Britney instead of Cher. I survived it: Go me! Now I have to catch up on that Iron Maiden album I similarly put off until my completionism got the better of me.

Го мрзам албумов из дна душе

As if you don’t already know what you’re getting from this before you listen. Terrible.

unremarkable. sounds auto-tuned. pretty much an album of lame love songs. Difficult to finish... 0 tracks enjoyed; difficult to understand how this was so popular in HS. That was rough. the version of the album i listened to had remixes of the baby one more time song at the end so i had to endure several versions of it. didn't like any variety.

No. Just no

I ALREADY RATED THIS YOU IDIOTS

Nicht im Ernst

Can't do it sorry

Is this taking the piss?

There's much better bubble gum than this.

And thus is the Radio Disney era begun. Bad songwriting, average voice, crappy production. This site's credibility is again brought into question simply because some wonk decided that selling 25 million albums must make it one of the all-time greats.

I gave this an honest try -- as I often say, I love this whole project because it ensures I'll listen to a wide variety of recordings from many eras across all genres -- and I can definitely understand why it appealed to tons of people. It just didn't have much for me. Nothing wrong with it at all. I frankly get a bit weirded out when some folks go pretty far with anti-genre or anti-artist ravings. It's merely a matter of personal preferences to me, that's all.

1999 I would‘ve hated to listen to it except ironically and completely plastered at the end of some birthday party. Today, hate has disappeared but I still can‘t listen to it in terms of consuming inspiring music. Mega boring plastic pop.

Bubblegum bullshit

BL: Britney is someone who needs no introduction. Probably one of the most popular artist of the 90s and one of the most culturally significant of all time. Will be interested to listen to this as I only know the hits. AL: I’m pretty dissapointed by this album. It didn’t really do anything to me. 12 of the 14 tracks sounded identical to one another. The only two that stood out were the opening track (due to how iconic it is) and “The Beat Goes On” due to its very nice sampling and beat sequencing. Other than that it was standard 90s love song girl pop, which I understand why it appealed to the target demographic of the Y2K teens at the time but doesn’t really do anything for me now. FT: “…Baby one more time”, and “The Beat Goes On” 1/5

In the late 90s, music execs needed a nubile pop star to peddle their inane drivel, so they turned to the Mouseketeers and ruined the rest of this poor girl's life. The dudebros today who complain about Taylor Swift's music being everywhere obviously didn't have to suffer through this overproduced, oversung, written-by-committee drivel. This got popular on the strength of the opening beat to the opening song, and not enough people listened past that to see if it was worth anything before buying 100 million albums or whatever it was, and that's why the music industry bubble burst. Best track: ...Baby One More Time

Ugh, I admit I almost sort of like the first song 'Baby One More Time,' but I just can't do this album as a whole. I now feel some sort of embarassed that this will show up in my played list.

With everything Britney's been through she deserves, just one more time, to be on a list of the 20 _____ _____. This album's 2.68 rating is too high to make the cut for the 20 lowest rated albums on 1001. The rating needs to be lower than 2.48 to make the list. Let's give Britney some 1 rating love to help her make this list. It's the least we could do.

Does bubble gum pop deserve to be on the list? I think not.

Holy shit this is a bad album and represents the awfulness that is late 90s pop. Why the hell is this album even on the list, when other good albums have been completely left off? I hated this album when it came out and I didn't listen to it completely then. It did not get any better with time. Also why is there a reggae style song? Songs were skipped. Pure shit. Please avoid.

Just not my cup of tea. Very bland late 90's pop.

The Beat Goes On was surprisingly solid. But, y'know.

No, just no. I don't care how many copies it sold. I don't care if it is Britney bitch.

The title track? Good. Nice to dance to. The rest of the album? Gad. It was a tacky as a neurotic college kid’s corkboard. Not to mention that this was all going on before Spears turned 18, which… mercy. At least I have the non-US cover in my collection to save face when someone asks me what it’s doing there.

I grew up during the 00s and even then i hated the sound of 00s pop so this is a very personal rating. music wise it is regular pop nothing extremely good or bad. i had to skip the first 3 songs which are the most famous one's because i involuntary heard em to many times growing up.

That's embarassing

Please not one more time! One time is more than enough. Some silly on ear in one ear out commercial pop songs with some hits and a lot of filler material.

Tough one for me. Interesting to hear how low her natural voice is on the filler tracks. Saga more interesting than the music.

Skip this unless you've been already a fan of Britney or you like sugary pop. Otherwise it'll melt your teeth (and ears). Songs from this album made me wince back then in 90s and they still do. Best song: The Beat Goes On (the only song that has something going on, trip-hop vibe; shame the lyrics are atrocious) Worst song: Born to Make You Happy (key change feels like "nails on a chalkboard"-bad)

OK, I listened to it before I died...

Hit Me Baby One More Time is amazing. The rest of the songs are horrible.

Why? Why do I have to relive this? This record was garbage in the 90's when I had to hear the song every 40 minutes on the Blockbuster Trailer tapes. And it's shit now. This is the worst record so far on this list. I did make it though. And now I am having a bad day.

Gazillion selling single, so it must be an amazing pop album full of gems, right? Wrong, horribly so. Nothing extraordinary or notable. Another huge disappointment, although I do know diamonds like Toxic are still to come from a host of brilliant songwriters using the pop star Britney vessel.

Not availanle

I can't believe I'm going listen to this album again, I never thought that would happen. Somehow it's even more painful then I recall.

That was terrible. Just awful. The only tolerable song was the Sonny Bono cover.

Dated pop trash. Way past its expiration date or relevance

American high school movie pop music, not really my thing
