1001 Albums Summary

Ok. Better than I expected.

I like the boogie rock aspect of the album, not knowing really what to expect. It did become a bit one-note and repetitive as the album went on though. Southern, soulful, catchy were my takeaways.

Started off with a banger of a song…love Changes. Then it got so boring I had to keep reminding myself to pay attention. Ended on a better note, the last couple songs were okay. I don’t like the album name and I don’t like the album cover. I especially don’t like combination of said album name and album cover.

Not bad! Definitely feels like a first album. Can’t understand a word he’s saying, but the riffs kept my attention the whole time.

This album goes hard. Can definitely see why it’s a classic.

I got this literally the day after Paranoid and there’s no comparison for me. It was certainly okay but didn’t pack the same punch.

Love The Temptations, but maybe slightly underwhelmed by the album. Tempo was a bit slow. Seems like it was their transition from Motown to funk maybe?

The instrumentals were not really my thing. But I enjoyed the actual songs (ha). 3.5

Very 2000s-California-coded and feels very nostalgic even though I’ve never listened to any of this. Surprised to hear they’re Irish. I don’t understand what is so impactful/influential about this album. It’s like they’re copycatting a culture- would be interested to hear if their other albums have the same sound, but not interested enough to actually listen to them. Despite all of that I can’t give it less than three stars because it is just so nostalgic!

I just find Metallica to be so incredibly boring. There is no melody to be had. I could like the drums, but they overpower most of the songs, or maybe the rest of the instrumentation isn’t matching the drums?

I knew this would be weird and I was not disappointed. This album is super Icelandic. I did find some of the tracks did not add anything (Ancestors, midvikings) but I listened twice.

Love a good classic country album. It’s also cool that the (arguably) best song on the album is the one song written by her. Very neat!

I struggled with this one. Mother We Share is such a killer song and I was so sure I would give this AT LEAST a 4… it just dies down a bit as it progresses. I lost interest about halfway through unfortunately.

I liked this except for the three slow songs in the middle, just couldn’t get into them. And the songs are too long. One World and Brothers in Arms are new-to-me songs that I’ll keep going back to.

I didn’t find this to be anything exciting. I can hear the Jamaican influence which is neat. The singles are the best songs.

I have to give this another listen.

Yeah listen, this album is super odd and the droning is not my taste, I am happy to never listen again. But I can’t deny the turmoil he must have been going through at this time. I just wish I understood it more. At least it was only 30 mins…

This album reminds me of Frank Turner! Which is complimentary, but definitely not as good. Listened three times trying hard to get into it but ultimately did not.

I knew within the first 3 seconds I would not enjoy this. But I gave it a chance and it went from a 1 to a 2!

Wait this is amazing!!! First three songs are complete BANGERS.

He has a captivating voice. You can feel the darkness in the content.

Kind of cool because it sounds like it’s from the mid-80’s.

I was hopeful…it starts out with possibly the best classic rock song ever. But I hate Bargain (blame commercial media) and Behind Blue Eyes (blame Limp Bizkit) so it’s hard to give it a great rating.

Max Martin is completely underrated. A modern-day Mozart lol. Easy 4 stars from me. I don’t agree with the comments about fillers- it’s full of bangers. The middle-aged men complaining about listening to this are incredibly lame. I bet you didn’t have any trouble listening to Kid Rock. Edit: 100-album calibration - lol at my prior comment, I guess I was in a mood. There are so many killer songs on this, I am changing from a 4 to a 5 : )

Funky! I think I would like some of their earlier albums a bit more. Also, too many covers.

Surprised I ended up really enjoying this! I like the sound and can see myself listening to this album again and again.

The only song I like on this is Peace Frog

I understand the significance of this album and Sinatra in general, but that doesn’t mean I like it. Anything Goes was my favorite song on the album.

It is missing something…some kind of wow factor or hook

His voice is annoying and this whole album reminds me of Twilight not only because of the baseball scene but the author was obsessed with Muse

Quite the debut album

Fun album. I give it just like 3.5 stars, so rounding up I guess.

This was a slow burn for me. Had to listen to it a few times which I just happened to have the time and patience for lol

If this was my first time listening, I’d easily give it 4 stars. But I’ve heard these songs a million times…they are so overplayed. So I’m giving it a 3 but I don’t know if that makes sense haha

First time listening to them and didn’t know what to expect. I liked it!

Unlike most albums, I felt this started weak and ended strong.

Maybe 2.8 stars. I enjoyed it and it was great for a Saturday morning!

Some of it gave me anxiety listening to it, like the faster-paced stuff. I also do not understand how a song could have a 12 or 14 count time signature - truly impressive and unique!

I’m surprised (and excited) I haven’t heard any of these songs before. Different kind of sound for sure and it was all over the place, but I liked it. Althoughhhh too many songs.

Just finished the whole album (which is thankfully 30mins) and I have Let’s Get It On still stuck in my head. I don’t know what that means but I don’t think it’s good- obviously none of the other songs stuck with me.

I love gangster rap! But this wasn’t that great…the best parts were Eminem’s parts. I’M SORRY FOFTY!

I was just waiting for this to end the whole time. Love Me Like a Reptile was a particularly wtf moment. I was just thinking the lead singer sounds incredibly old when the song Jailbait came on. Lovely.

Really liked it. Another one that kind of falls off in the back half. Probably only needed to be 12-ish tracks.

I always love the sound of Fugazi but feel like something is missing…not sure what. Like a hook or some kind of better riff? I always love the rhythm section though so idk. Either way I’m rounding up to a 4.

Love her voice. I find it interesting this is her 19th album and the first one she wrote. Glad she got some recognition for it!

I really liked most of the songs I hadn’t heard before. Bangers all around!

I recognized El Cumbanchero, and definitely that version…I wish I knew from what! Fun album.

*sigh* Karma Police had me in a chokehold in college (yes I was very deep). So I was excited about this one, but I think I am not very deep anymore. Boring! Karma Police still slaps though.

I think it is super cool this is the first heavy metal album! I didn’t enjoy any of their songs. I liked the riff in Parchment Farm, but that was the only thing that really stood out to me.

Perfectly fine, but nothing special

Like butter. Her voice is amazing. Does she overdo it a bit at times? Yes, but she’s Mariah and can do whatever she wants.

I didn’t find anything remarkable about it. And I do enjoy this genre of country.

Another one that’s hard to rate because I’m sick of all the singles that I already know, but I’m sure if it was my first time hearing them I would feel differently. I did like the Ramble Tamble song, which was new to me.

TIL that this is Eagle-Eye Cherry’s sister AND that his real name is actually Eagle-Eye. Paula Abdul vibes. Buffalo Stance slaps!

Got excited when I got this album, but was kind of disappointed. It’s just okay for me. The songs of his I enjoy I realllly love. He has such a unique sound but couldn’t really get into it. I’m going to keep trying in case it’s a slow burn.

First few songs were really good. Kind of got boring. The last few songs were kind of funny / interesting in terms of the lyrics, so they were memorable in that sense but still kind of boring to me.

The Talking Heads are so weird (complimentary). I found this to be just okay though.

I wish every song was like Higher Ground!! I’ll give it another listen at some point but for now…3

Another one that’s unfortunately just okay!

So many good songs. Some I am familiar with and others that are new to me! Not everyone song is a bop but enough to keep me interested the whole time.

2 hours?!?! 42 tracks?!?! Oh, it’s all old-school banjos and fiddles? Yes please.

I would actually enjoy this. The post-song skit things were incredibly cringey, even if they’re a part of grime culture. I have to downgrade.

There’s something I just don’t care for about Peter Gabriel’s music…he’s always too serious or something. I like Genesis though hmm.

I enjoy the juxtaposition of Amy’s lighthearted and superficial lyrics with the classic jazzy music.

This is so bad. The harmonica is jarring and the live show just illustrates even more that he can’t sing. The second half is much better than the first. Funny that the crowd booed that half lol.

I am proud of myself. I really dislike U2, but this project is about having an open mind and -boom- I enjoyed it. That’s the beauty of this challenge!

Wait and Bleed is the only decent song because it actually has a melody. I don’t mind the screaming but there’s nothing to offset it with. Just heavy drums and rahhhh.

This is my favorite Radiohead album on the list so far (3rd one). I liked a few of the songs, but Spinning Plates made me feel physically uncomfortable…so weird!

Weird how the first half is so much different than the second. It’s all over the place! Apparently it was a way for Paul to branch out from Jam, so I guess it makes sense, but not cohesive at all.

I wasn't a fan of The White Stripes when they first came on the scene...I got all the garage rock bands confused - Jet, The Hives, The Strokes, etc. etc. But I am glad I finally listened to this, it's very good.

Brave Little Toaster vibes

My first Costello album, finally. And I actually liked it!

Albums like this are why I want the book. How is this influential? The Wikipedia page says nothing of the sort. I mean, I did like it though ; )

I remember when this album came out. It was a very cool and unique concept, but also made me feel a certain type of way. This great duo did their own things, as much as they tried to convince everyone there were no issues between them (which might be true), but it seemed sad to me. I also always felt bad for Big Boi because it seemed like everyone liked Andre’s album more lol. Had never listened to it until now though and I can say with 100% certainty Big Boi’s album is far superior. 5 stars for the first half, 3 stars for the second half = 4 stars Hey Ya and Roses still slap though.

Whenever Wikipedia lists this book in the description, I know it’s bad. The album is much like the cover: dirty, confusing, and offensive.

Slow burn for me. At first I said, ugh Santana without Rob Thomas or Michelle Branch…and it will be mostly just instrumentals. But honestly it was great.

It’s disappointing when the single(s) is the best track by far.

The first time I ever heard of this guy was earlier in this challenge with his “Darker” album. So hearing his debut was fun.

I genuinely want to like this. I know it’s good and I’m bummed I just don’t get it.

Crazy how successful the first half of this album was. I feel like that’s hard in modern times for artists to put out so many hits from one album? Anyway, the second half was much better than I expected it to be. I didn’t hate it. Probably would give it a 5 if I wasn’t so “sick” of all the singles.

Every track they tricked me into thinking there was some build-up to a heavy powerful moment. NOTHING. 1 star.

I wish I got into music a bit younger…I could have used Fiona. The album is too slow-jazzy for me at times though. Also, why is she considered so angry?! She’s seems a very reasonable amount of angry to me.

I could see a world in which I give this 4 stars. The Individual and the last song were dumb though.

Genuinely surprised I’m giving this 4 stars. Especially after that weird second track. Edit: after a second listen I’m downgrading to a 3 lol. I only saved off one track. Still not bad though!

Come on, if this wasn’t The Beatles, it would have a 2.6 star rating. Actually it wouldn’t even be on this list.
