The Icarus Line

The album is just kind of a lot of noise. It sounds like any other garage rock / 2000's White Stripes copy. Unfortunately, this album doesn't bring anything new or interesting to the table. It's weird that anyone would put this on a list of quintessential albums.

I couldn't get through it. I have no idea why this would be included in this list. It was very boring and unsurprising to me.

The front half (or the first side of the album) stands up as some really great psychedelia from the 60s and the second half delves into a more progressive rock format with several songs coming together to make a long "medley" and tell a story. Using a bit of backwards logic, the front half has a bit of a Tame Impala sound, only except some of the mix isn't as perfect as other contemporary artists and artists of the 60s. Personally, I think there's a lot of heart to this album, and I will be coming back to this on a regular basis. Highlights: 1, 2, 5, and 6 (and 7-12 for those who want a combination of Yes and 13th Floor Elevators). Right after I wrote this, I went into the stereo versions. I should have started with them in hindsight, but sometimes mono can be cool for older stuff. I was already going to rate this a five, but I can't wait to listen through it again.

There's a reason that I usually give albums more than one listen, and Real Life is a great example. I found the first listen irritating and boring, but the second listen has made me love this record. The instrumentation is wonderful on almost all of the tracks, and it sets quite the tone for post-punk. I especially love the Bowie-like vocals on track 5. I can see myself coming back to this album just as much as I come back to Unknown Pleasures. Highlights: 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, and 9 (not including 2007 release with bonus tracks).

One of my favorite Metallica records. It's not quite my favorite, and I rated it a five probably due to nostalgia reasons, but the riffs on this are too addictive to rate it anything less. Of course, the bass could be a little more present, but that's Hetfield's problem. The lyrics on this are as poignant as ever and the drumming is brutal without sounding like garbage like it does in their later records. I highly recommend this to any metal fan that hasn't listened to it already. Highlights: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, and 9.
